Columbus Man Killed on I-71 in Morrow County

HARMONY TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A Columbus man was killed Thursday night after a vehicle struck him in the northbound lanes of Interstate 71 in Morrow County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 10:23 p.m. Sept. 24 near milepost 147. Troopers said Brandon Miller, 38, was standing in the roadway when a northbound 2025 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Brandon Diguilio, 42, of North Ridgeville, struck him.

Morrow County EMS pronounced Miller dead at the scene. Diguilio remained at the scene and was not injured, the patrol said.

The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Big Walnut Joint Fire District, Morrow County Fire Department, Morrow County Prosecutor’s Office and Morrow County Coroner assisted at the scene. The Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

Scholarship Fund Set up in Honor of Ian Atkinson

ASHLAND – Ian Atkinson is remembered as a hard worker, lover of the Lord Jesus Christ and someone who was dedicated to his family. The Hillsdale High School graduate was an honor-roll student, athlete, and known for being a natural leader.

After passing away from a tragic farming accident in July, his friends and family are honoring and remembering him by establishing a scholarship in his name at Ashland County Community Foundation: the Ian Atkinson Scholarship Fund. They welcome those who wish to honor Ian to contribute to this scholarship fund.

Ian’s parents, Jeff and Meghin, describe Ian as trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

He loved building things, especially 3D puzzles; roller skating; and reading the Bible with his family. Ian’s strong dedication to following the biblical teachings of and his belief in the Lord Jesus Christ who is God Almighty are qualities Jeff and Meghin hope recipients of this scholarship will reflect, along with a strong work ethic and willingness to help others.

The scholarship is open to graduating seniors of Hillsdale High School who plan to attend a trade/technical/vocational school and have maintained a grade point average of 2.8 and above. Hillsdale Falcons to Honor Veterans and Service Members at Friday Football Game

JEROMESVILLE, Ohio — Friday night football will be a celebration of service when Hillsdale Schools hosts its Military Appreciation Football Game on Sept. 25.

The Falcons will honor veterans and those currently serving in the military. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Veterans participating in the recognition should be at the field by 6:15 p.m.

Veterans, active-duty personnel, National Guard members and reservists will receive free admission. They should enter and sign in at the pass gate nearest the press box.

Each eligible guest will also receive a voucher for a complimentary hot dog and drink. Vouchers will be handed out at the gate. The concession stand’s express lane will be available at the end of the first quarter; at other times, guests should use the regular line.

As the Falcons take the field, Hillsdale’s message to those who have worn the uniform, and those who wear it today is simple: Thank you for your service.

Diamond J Rodeo Delivers a Night of Action at the 175th Ashland County Fair

ASHLAND, Ohio — The cool fall breeze had competition Wednesday night. Inside the arena, Diamond J Rodeo brought the speed, skill and suspense that had fairgoers following every ride and run.

The rodeo began at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 as part of the 175th Ashland County Fair. It was a fast-paced, well-run evening of family entertainment and Diamond J’s fourth consecutive year at the fair, following appearances in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The program gave the crowd a full range of rodeo competition: bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, cowgirl barrel racing and cowgirl breakaway roping. From roughstock rides to timed events, the action kept moving throughout the night.

Wednesday’s show added another memorable night to a fair week that had featured country artist Gary Allan at the grandstand on Tuesday. For families watching together, Diamond J Rodeo delivered an exciting Ashland County Fair tradition with plenty to cheer about.

There is more grandstand action ahead. Motocross is scheduled for tonight, Thursday, Sept. 24, at 6 p.m., and the demolition derby is set for Saturday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m.

METRICH Seizes $84,510 and Two Firearms in Mansfield Search

MANSFIELD, Ohio — METRICH Detectives seized $84,510 in cash, a shotgun, a rifle and items they described as consistent with drug trafficking during a search of a Mansfield home Wednesday, Sept. 23.

The METRICH Enforcement Unit said it executed a drug-related search warrant at 41 Glenbeck Lane with assistance from the Mansfield Police Department.

METRICH identified three people in photographs accompanying its news release: Cy Ison, 24; Belinda Williams, 64; and Kevin Williams, 67. The release said the individuals involved in the investigation live at the residence.

Investigators said they would seek charges when the investigation concludes. The release did not announce any arrests or filed charges.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Richard Dennison Pleads Not Guilty to Five Felony Charges in Ashland County

ASHLAND, Ohio — Richard Dennison pleaded not guilty Tuesday, Sept. 22, to five fourth-degree felony counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor or impaired person, according to Ashland County Common Pleas Court records.

The complaint alleges that Dennison knowingly bought, obtained, possessed or controlled obscene material involving a minor in Ashland County on or about Sept. 17. It lists five separate counts under Ohio Revised Code Section 2907.321(A)(5). Ashland Police Division Detective Kara Pearce signed the complaint, which was filed Sept. 18.

Magistrate Emily M. Bates set bond at $300,000 during a Sept. 21 hearing. Dennison may post a surety bond, a bond secured by qualifying property or securities, or cash in that amount. Bates appointed attorney Cassandra Buckner after finding Dennison eligible for court-appointed counsel.

If released on bond, Dennison must wear a GPS monitor, observe a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and have no unsupervised contact with minors. The order also bars him from possessing a device capable of accessing the internet and prohibits alcohol, drugs of abuse and products containing THC. He may not leave Ohio without written court permission.

At Tuesday’s hearing, Dennison appeared by video with Buckner and entered his not guilty plea through counsel. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Laura Stanley appeared for the state. Dennison waived his right to a preliminary hearing, and Bates continued the existing bond.

The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, at 2:30 p.m. by video. Dennison must appear at the Ashland County courthouse if he posts bond before then.

The charges are allegations. Dennison is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Richland County Sheriff’s Office Receives $82,442 Traffic Safety Grant

RICHLAND COUNTY, Ohio — The Richland County Sheriff’s Office has received $82,442.42 in federal funding to support traffic safety efforts during the 2026–27 federal fiscal year.

The Ohio Traffic Safety Office awarded the grant through the Ohio Department of Public Safety. The money originates with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is distributed to safety partners across Ohio.

“These funds are critical in ensuring that we are working diligently to keep our local roadways safe,” Sheriff J. Steve Sheldon said in a Sept. 23 news release. He said the office will focus on reducing crashes, speeding and impaired driving while increasing seat belt use.

The state’s traffic safety priorities also include motorcycle safety and young drivers. Grant proposals are reviewed competitively, with funding directed toward projects expected to reduce fatal crashes or improve traffic safety systems.

Catholic Charities and Ashland County Juvenile Court Partner to Offer Free Parent Education Series

ASHLAND, OH — September 23, 2026 — Catholic Charities and the Ashland County Juvenile Court are partnering to offer “Tough Conversations: Parent Growth Series,” a free four-week educational program designed to help parents and caregivers navigate some of the most challenging issues facing young people today.

The series will provide parents and caregivers with practical information and tools related to youth mental health, substance use and addiction, suicide risk factors and warning signs, effective parent-child communication, and building stronger family connections.

“Parents are often the first to notice when something is changing with their child, but knowing what to look for—and knowing how to start a difficult conversation—can be challenging,” said Judge Karen DeSanto Kellogg of the Ashland County Juvenile Court. “This series is an opportunity for parents to gain information, confidence and practical tools that can strengthen their relationships with their children and help them respond when concerns arise.”

Judge DeSanto Kellogg said, “Catholic Charities’s Sheryl Villegas and Court Administrator Regina Theisen have shown real initiative in developing this program.   I could not be more proud of their teamwork.”   Judge Kellogg explained that she has noticed that some parents are at a loss when it comes to their children’s mental health.   “I have high expectations for parents.  But, sometimes I have noticed that parents really don’t know how to respond to what might be a serious crisis when their kids really need them.  I want that to change.”

The partnership between Catholic Charities and the Ashland County Juvenile Court reflects a shared commitment to prevention, education and strengthening families before problems become crises. The program is intended for parents and caregivers who want to better understand the challenges young people face and develop stronger communication and connections within their families.

Gary Allan Draws Near-Sellout Crowd as Ashland County Fair Finds Its Stride

ASHLAND, Ohio — After a slow start to fair week and rain forced the cancellation of Sunday’s OSTPA tractor pull, the Ashland County Fairgrounds came alive Tuesday night for country music star Gary Allan’s nearly sold-out concert.

Allan’s appearance was one of the headline attractions of the fair’s 175th year. The California-born singer has built a career on songs that pair a rugged country sound with deeply personal lyrics. His hits include “Man to Man,” “Nothing On but the Radio,” “Watching Airplanes” and “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain).” His 1999 album Smoke Rings in the Dark became his first platinum album.

The concert gave fairgoers a big night at the grandstand after weather disrupted the opening weekend. And the excitement continues: Come back tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 23, for the Diamond J Rodeo at 7 p.m.

The 175th Ashland County Fair continues through Saturday, Sept. 26. Thursday’s schedule includes motocross, Friday brings the junior fair livestock auction and stock tractor pull, and Saturday’s grandstand finale is the demolition derby.

Tips to ACP News Reveal Separate Indiana Felony Case Against Ross Rutschilling

ASHLAND, Ohio — Tips sent to ACP News about Ross C. Rutschilling led to a separate, pending felony case against him in Wells County, Indiana. The Wells County Sheriff’s Office has also released his booking photo.

Booking information provided to ACP News shows Rutschilling, 24, of St. Henry, Ohio, was booked into the Wells County Jail on May 14, 2026, on one count of child solicitation, a Level 4 felony. The booking information lists May 18 as the date he bonded out.

A newly provided copy of the Indiana court’s charge list shows 21 charges in the pending case: the child solicitation count and 20 Level 5 felony counts of possession of child sexual abuse material.

Rutschilling appeared by video from the jail at his May 18 initial hearing and entered a not guilty plea, according to the court docket. The docket records a $1,000 cash bond as received by the clerk on May 26. The records provided to ACP News do not explain the difference between the reported May 18 release date and the clerk’s May 26 bond entry.

The Indiana case, State of Indiana v. Ross Rutschilling, No. 90C01-2605-F4-000006, remains pending in Wells Circuit Court. The docket shows prosecutors sought to amend the charging information in July, but the materials provided do not establish precisely when each possession count was added. His next pretrial conference is scheduled for Nov. 16.

Rutschilling also faces six second-degree misdemeanor charges in Ashland Municipal Court in connection with the investigation of Happy Mountain K9 Facilities near Loudonville. He pleaded not guilty Sept. 22 to five charges alleging that he organized, promoted, aided or abetted acts involving sexual conduct with an animal and one charge of attempted cruelty to a companion animal. Judge John L. Good released him on a recognizance bond and barred him from possessing or controlling animals while the Ohio cases are pending. His next Ashland hearing is scheduled for Oct. 13.

The Indiana and Ohio cases involve separate allegations. Rutschilling is presumed innocent of all charges unless proven guilty in court.
