Microsoft showcased the new Xbox One yesterday in a widely hyped reveal presentation that left some people a bit underwhelmed. Personally, I think the Xbox One looks awesome. I know the biggest complaint from most people is that they didn’t really focus on the games, and rather on the all-in-one home entertainment aspect to the console, but I that’s where things are going and thats what Microsoft needs to do to stay relevant.

The focus of the new system is to become the hub of your living room. From live TV, to movies, to video games and internet, the Xbox One wants to control everything you use to stay entertained while sitting on your couch. The design of the system itself is a bit clunky, it just looks like one of the original, 1st gen blu-ray players from Sony. And the kinect sensor looks as if it’s beefier than the previous iteration, but I’m not sure. The controller has remained very similar to the Xbox 360′s controller, which is good because Microsoft hit the nail on the head with that controller. The only complaints I’ve ever heard about the 360 controller was the terrible D-pad, but Microsoft listened and redesigned it. It also sounds like they added the ability to have some sort of feedback come through the trigger buttons.

The design of the physical console isn’t where Microsoft was trying to be innovative, it’s with the software. The Xbox One will run a stripped version of the Windows kernal (the dashboard looks just like Windows 8), and will allow you to seamlessly switch between games, live TV and anything else you want to do on the console. It’s things like this that left people a bit disappointed after the keynote yesterday. Microsoft focused so much of their time and energy on showing off the tv capabilities of the Xbox One, that we only got to see 1 game really… Call of Duty: Ghosts, and even with that we didn’t see any gameplay. And I understand that E3 is coming up and Microsoft has to save something for that show, but you’d think they’d want to at least appease the majority of the crowd at the keynote and show them some games. I even read that all the screams and cheers you heard while watching the live stream of the keynote, were in fact Microsoft employees in the back and not from the actual press in the audience… interesting.

So while not everyone was excited about what Microsoft put on display yesterday, I think the Xbox One is going to be a huge step forward in taking over the living room. I’m actually excited for all the TV interactivity that seems to be coming, especially the fantasy football and live sports stuff. I know a lot of people tuned out when they kept talking about sports, but that part actually really excited me. So I guess we’ll have to wait until E3 to see what some of the games actually look like, what the price point is, and when the system will actually be released, but as soon as you can preorder it, I’m putting down my money. Microsoft may have lost me when it comes to my home computers, but they’ll keep me around as long as the Xbox is in play. Hell, even if Apple decides that they need to release a game console, I’ll still stick with my Xbox.

So what did you guys think of the reveal? Were you disappointed with the lack of games talk? Did you like the TV stuff?

I finally got a chance to watch the series finale of “The Office” this weekend and it was everything I wanted and more. I liked it so much I actually watched it twice. I’ve been a huge fan of the show since the beginning, but almost gave up on it after Steve Carrell left. It still had it’s moments in the post-Michael Scott era, but for the most part the show had just run it’s course. There’s only so many pranks Jim can pull on Dwight, so many times Stanley can complain about being lazy and hating his job, so many times Kevin can act like such an idiot it’s a wonder he ever had a job to begin with, so many times we can see Angela doing something ridiculous to a cat, etc…. it was just time to end it.

If you haven’t seen the finale yet there will probably be some spoilers ahead, just giving you a fair warning. So the finale jumps to a year after the previous episode in which we saw Dwight and Angela get engaged as well as Jim prove his love to Pam. So naturally the finale would focus on Angela’s wedding and a reunion of the “cast” of The Office documentary as they come together to be on a Q&A panel hosted by PBS. A few people have left the Dunder Mifflin since the last episode; Stanley retired to Florida, Andy had already quit his job and is now the laughing stock of the internet because his audition for American Acapella Idol (or whatever) went viral, Kevin was fired for being an idiot, Toby was fired because he’s Toby, Daryl moved to Austin with Athlead (Athleap), and apparently Nellie left for some reason as well and now lives in Poland…. Either way, everyone comes back to town for the Q&A panel, which happened to fall on the same weekend as Dwight and Angela’s wedding, but not by coincidence. Jim knew that not everyone would fly in for the wedding so he made it a point to manipulate PBS into having the panel that same weekend because he knew the network would fly everyone in for it. Gutenprank #1.

Jim plans out a serious of Gutenpranks for Dwight, since Dwight gave him the honor of being his Best Man. Gutenprank #2 was the chance to fire a bazooka at some barrels while Gutenprank #3 was getting Dwight and Kevin to make amends so that Kevin would be at the wedding. Gutenprank #4 was convincing Dwight that he couldn’t be his best man because traditionally the best man has to be older than the groom, and who better to be the best man than Michael Scott. Yup, Steve Carrell came back to be Dwight’s best man, and it couldn’t have been more fitting. I actually teared up a bit when the camera panned around to see Michael standing in the doorway. Come to think of it, I actually teared up quite a bit throughout the episode.

The wedding was the main focus of the finale, we even got to see Ryan and Kelly come back together. It was like one big happy/sad reunion with everyone we’ve come to love over the years. The only person I don’t think I saw on the episode was Pam’s ex, Roy, but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t allowed anywhere near Dunder Mifflin. After the wedding, we find out that Pam has been secretly trying to sell their house so that they can move to Austin and Jim can work for Athleap instead of Dunder Mifflin. When Jim and Pam arrive at their house a little earlier than expected, the realtor is still there showing it to an eager couple. So eager in fact that they offer to buy the house right then and there. Upon telling Dwight the news, he immediately fires both of them, but not to be a dick, instead it’s so that he can give them both severance packages on their way out. So despite all of the pranks and annoyances between the two of them for the past 9 years, it’s obvious that they have truly become close.

The whole episode wrapped up with a touching song from Creed as he is caught living in the bathroom/storage closet in the office. He’s been on the run after the cops found out that he was someone else with quite a few outstanding warrants in his past. Everything came together quite nicely in the end and I’m very happy with the way things were resolved. A lot of times I’m disappointed in how shows wrap up their series finales, or just the fact that the shows themselves are over, but not this one. The Office ended exactly how it should have, with a lot of laughs and a lot of tears, people moving on, and people getting along. It was perfect. And as for the show itself, it had run it’s course and it was time to end.

What did you guys think of the finale?

Google announced some pretty cool things yesterday, none of which I’ve really read anything about, but what I do know is that they redesigned Google+ to look more like Facebook/Pinterest and they rebranded GChat as Google Hangouts. I don’t mind the rebranding itself, it’s what they’ve done away with that really annoys me.

I know the idea behind Google Hangouts is to compete with services like iMessage and Facebook Messenger, but the whole idea behind GChat was that it was an instant messaging app… you knew who was online! That’s really the only thing I don’t like about it. If I want to “chat” with someone at any time, from my phone, I’m probably just going to use iMessage, but that’s only because I’m on mostly Apple devices and an iPhone. So I guess in that sense, and the fact that there are a lot of android phones out there, this move does make sense for Google now that I think about it.

I guess now that I’ve talked it out to myself it makes more sense. Hangouts is basically Google’s iMessage which doesn’t need to rely on Online or Offline status… it’s just always online. It will just take a little while for everyone to download the apps so that it truly is a universal messaging applications across all platforms. I do like that the computer portion of it is web based (just like GChat) so that I don’t need an application on my computer in order to talk to people from my desktop. This makes it easier at work where I can’t install iMessage on my computer… Damn, maybe I’ll end up exclusively using Hangouts instead of iMessage…. nah, probably not, but the more I think about it, the more benefits I’m seeing in this. Good show Google.

Update: Apparently there is a notification of whether or not people are online, it’s a small green bar underneath their profile picture, but the problem is that the “friends list” on the side doesn’t sort by online or not…

Today we bring you the 1963 film The Great Escape, starring the badass most of us should know about, Steve McQueen as well as another badass Charles Bronson. This movie is based on (or said to be based on) a true story about a group of POW’s who planned an unthinkable escape from a Nazi Stalag, or prison camp.

After arriving at the camp, all of the prisoners immediately start scanning their surroundings in an attempt to escape, with some even getting pretty close. The squads’ leader, Bartlett, begins his plan to escape shortly after being interrogated by the SS. This plan involved tunnels as well as super detailed maps of the camp. The tunnels all had a nickname; Dick, Tom and Harry. The rest of the flick takes you on an enjoyable ride as you follow the fugitives out of the Stalag and to freedom, as well as an awesome motorcycle chase, lead by the “not that frequently on screen” McQueen.

Video

The 1080p transfer is alright for a movie made back in the 1960′s. It is definitely not a movie you will be like “oh wow look at that picture!!!”, but it is certainly watchable. Other than that, i feel like the restoration was decent and the viewer, if excited to see this film, will enjoy seeing it brought back in a “clearer” visual spectacle.

Audio

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 is actually a pleasant surprise. The voices are clear and crisp as is the soundtrack that goes along with the movie. Also noticeable are the sounds of the prison life as well as the ambient noises and surrounding sounds. Overall great quality!

Special Features

The Great Escape: Bringing Fact to Fiction: One of a group of short documentaries produced for MGM in 2001 by The History Channel and narrated by Burt Reynolds!!!

The Great Escape: Preparations for Freedom: This 2001 History Channel featurette shows the real escape efforts by the prisoners at Stalag Luft III, which were accurately depicted in the film

The Great Escape: The Flight to Freedom: This 2001 History Channel featurette compares the film’s account of the escapees sprint to freedom against the of course less dramatically depicted escape of the actual survivors

The Great Escape: A Standing Ovation: This 2001 History Channel featurette basically focuses on the reputation of the film.

The Great Escape: The Untold Story: This is a 2001 documentary made for British TV. Using interviews and re-enactments, it chronicles the successful Allied effort, after the war’s end, to identify and prosecute members of the Gestapo responsible for casualties among the escaped prisoners.

The Great Escape: The Untold Story—Additional Interviews

The Real Virgil Hilts: A Man Called Jones: A portrait of American Army pilot David Jones, who served as the inspiration for Steve McQueen’s character, told through interviews with Jones in 2001.

Return to The Great Escape: This 1993 Showtime documentary directed by Steven Jay Rubin features retrospective interviews with Garner, Pleasance and Coburn, among others, and provides an effective overview of the making of the film.

Original Theatrical Trailer: This is kind of cool to see.

Commentary with Director John Sturges, Cast and Crew:Feels less like a commentary piece and more like a series of interviews that have been stitched together

Overall a pretty cool restoration of a classic 60′s flick. Fans of this era will be delighted to relive this extraordinary film as well as viewers from a different generation to witness this basically impossible feat in American history! Enjoy

For a movie that went straight to DVD, this movie wasn’t that bad… What’s that? It came out in theaters? Really? Well then… For a movie that came out in theaters, this movie was kinda ‘meh’. All joking aside, “Broken City” doesn’t stand out when it comes to crime dramas, and coming from one half of the team that directed “Menace II Society” and “Dead Presidents” that was a little disappointing to me. It probably didn’t help that the script came from a 1st time screenwriter, but either way, with Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe attached, I thought it would be a little better than it was.

The movie follows NYPD Detective Billy Taggart as he is hired by the Mayor (Crowe) to do a little private detective work to determine if his wife is cheating on him. Obviously there’s a lot more to the story than just that. Taggart has been recently thrown off the force due to the fact that he killed the man who raped and murdered his sister-in-law. It was the mayor who took it upon himself to conveniently make some key evidence disappear so that Taggart wouldn’t be thrown in jail, but in return Taggart had to become his personal P.I. When he finally tracks down the guy that the Mayor’s wife is sleeping with it turns everything on it’s head and leads to a lot of people dying.

I wouldn’t say that the movie was terrible, but I wouldn’t say it was very good. There are some pretty gaping plot holes throughout the whole thing and it seems like the director needed some guidance from his other half. Do I regret watching the movie? No, not in the least bit, but I wish there was a little more to it. The plot moved along at a good pace, but the end reveal was pretty obvious as things started to play out. The suspense never really built up to a climactic ending as it probably should. Aside from the movie itself though, I thought the acting was very good. Wahlberg and Crowe do an excellent job here as do the supporting cast in Catherine Zeta-Jones and everyone’s favorite football coach Kyle Chandler. So thankfully, due to the decent acting, the movie was watchable and semi-enjoyable. I wouldn’t say run out and buy it, but I would give it a rent if you’re curious.

Technically speaking there’s nothing bad about this blu-ray. The audio and video are pristine, and everything looks and sounds great. This set included both the blu-ray and the DVD as well as an iTunes digital copy and an ultraviolet digital copy. The special features aren’t too bad, but I’m a sucker from behind-the-scenes featurettes so a 35 minute BTS made me happy. You also get to check out about 9 minutes of deleted scenes, along with an alternate ending to the flick (which is pretty dumb).

So while the flick isn’t really unique or have that “wow” factor, it’s not the worst thing I’ve seen and is worth checking out if you’re curious.

And we are back with some wicked comic reviews, well just one, followed by many more! This one in particular is a smash hit from a man who has just been killing it with such titles as The Massive among other ones as well as this smash hit right here.

This Star Wars series i am sure is pretty appealing to the older generation of SW fans, being that it brings back all the familiar faces with just a different story. The fifth part of this series focuses around the conundrums that the crew has been put into! For Chewie and Hans, the only form of survival is to take refuge in the underworld, while being hunted by one of the baddest assed bounty hunters to live Boba Fett. While all of this is happening we have a very crabby Luke, after being warned by the ghost of Ben. The final major even facing the Rebel Alliance is the cornering of Princess Leia’s X-Wing Squad. She has to be on the top of her game to out wit and survive the clutches of Colonel Bircher and his star fleet. Will the princess be able to hold off the tie’s and star destroyers? What is with whiney Luke? Can he not just listen to Obi and chill out? And who is this mysterious new ally that has come to join Darth Vader?

Once again this stands to be one of my favorite star wars books out there. Brian Wood is just a badass story teller with his creative intuition to just suck you into what hes trying to get across. If I were you all, I would go check this out, along with anything that Wood has done (DMZ etc).

Happy reading folks, and stay up to date with us, where we will be throwing out some more goodies!

50 Facts for 50 Years

Debuting on Blu-ray May 7

This year, The Great Escape celebrates its golden anniversary. To honor the 50th anniversary of that film’s release, we’ve compiled 50 interesting facts about the film, actors, the true story, the novel and more!

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are proud to announce that THE GREAT ESCAPE will arrive on Blu-ray for the first time on May 7, 2013. Based on a true story, THE GREAT ESCAPE is “a motion picture that entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs” (Variety). In 1943, the Germans opened a maximum-security prison-of-war camp, designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. By doing so, they unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history – brilliantly portrayed by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn – who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted. The Blu-ray comes fully loaded with over three hours of special features including commentary with Director John Sturges and crew, multiple making of featurettes, the original theatrical trailer and more.

The film spawned a fictionalized made-for-television sequel in 1988. It starred Christopher Reeve and Judd Hirsch.

Ferris Webster was nominated for an Oscar for Best Film Editing for THE GREAT ESCAPE.

Wally Floody, the real-life “Tunnel King,” served as a consultant to the filmmakers during production.

The P.O.W. camp Stalag Luft III opened in April 1942 and the Germans considered it to be practically escape-proof.

Two games were released based on the real life event – one by Ocean software in 1986, and another by Eidos in 2003 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

During idle periods in the production schedule, all cast and crew were asked to take strings of black rubber and knot them around other strings of black rubber. The finished results of this were the coils and fences of barbed wire seen throughout the film.

When filming the train sequences, a railroad representative had to be on hand to tell the filmmakers when to pull aside to avoid hitting scheduled oncoming trains.

In real life, none of the prisoners escaped via motorcycle or aircraft.

The book’s author, Paul Brickhill, participated in the escape plan but was debarred from the actual escape due to claustrophobia.

Most of the planes in the airfield are actually American AT-6 Texan trainers, but painted with a German color scheme.

Actors Rupert Davies, Cy Grant and Peter Butterworth were all real life prisoners in Stalag Luft III.

Many of the prisoners at Stalag Luft III we recaptured escapees.

In real life, a number of friendly guards helped supply prisoners with railway timetables, maps, and official papers required to allow them to be forged.

Charles Bronson had been a coal miner before he started acting – so he brought some real life experience to the set as the chief tunneler!

Some TV versions of the film edit the scene in which Ives is shot and killed for trying to escape over the fence.

James Garner used his own personal experiences in the military during the Korean War as inspiration for his “Scrounger” character.

The film shows almost everything happening in the summer months when, in actuality, the actual escape occurred in March while there was still snow on the ground.

In September 1943 the entrance to “Tom” became the 98th tunnel to be discovered in talag Luft III.

When the Bavaria Studio’s backlot proved to be too small for production, the team obtained permission from the German government to film in a national forest adjoining the studio, and reseeded about 2,000 small pine trees after shooting wrapped!

Author Paul Brickhill was piloting a Spitfire aircraft that was shot down over Tunisia in March 1943 when he was taken to Stalag Luft III.

The motorcycle that Hilts rides is a modified Triumph TR6 Trophy. These British motorcycle models were not in existence during WWII, and their appearance is somewhat incongruous!

Aside from the Triumph, there are a few other historical anachronisms in the film, including post-war traffic signs, an incorrect railroad logo, and more.

The film chose to focus on American P.O.W.s, but in actuality, the escapees were British and Empire personnel. None were actually American!

Bud Ekins, Steve McQueen’s stunt rider, made his first appearance as a stuntman in THE GREAT ESCAPE.

The actual tunneling and escape preparations took 600 men over a year to accomplish.

Steve McQueen’s character, Hilts, was actually based on amalgamation of several characters, and not just one person.

The motorcycle used by Steve McQueen is the same motorcycle Henry Winkler used on “Happy Days.”

Stalag Luft III was liberated on January 27, 1945. 11,000 remaining prisoners left that night.

Following the escape, the Germans took an inventory of the camp and discovered that 4,000 bed boards had gone missing. This was just a fraction of the materials that were ultimately found to have been used in the escape.

The gold medallion Steve McQueen wears in the film was a present from his wife.

During the climatic motorcycle chase, John Sturges allowed Steve McQueen to ride as one of the pursuing German soldiers. This means that, with some help from the editors, McQueen was chasing himself!

Seven P.O.W.s returned to Stalag Luft III in 2009 for the 65th anniversary of the escape, and were shown the film.

Steve McQueen, James Coburn, and Charles Bronson all previously starred together in another John Sturges movie – The Magnificent Seven.

The film was shot at Bavaria Film in Germany. Other films made here include The Sound of Music, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and Cabaret.

John Leyton who played Willy, the Tunneler, was one of the most popular UK pop singers in the early ’60s.

Actor David McCallum’s daughter, Sophie, has never been able to watch the film because she can’t stand to see her father shot.

Several members of the cast and crew were caught in a speed trap set up by German police near the set. Steve McQueen was even arrested and briefly jailed!

The film is accurate in showing that only three escapees actually got out, although the people who made them differed from those in the film.

This was one of the highest grossing films of 1963!

Although only 3 men managed to escape, the escape caused havoc among the Germans. Thousands of police, Hitler Youth members and soldiers were diverted from wartime duties to search for the escapees.

Cast members Donald Pleasence, Hannes Messemer, Til Kiwe and Hans Reiser were all actual P.O.W.s in WWII.

Donald Pleasance is the only actor to appear in both this film and the 1988 TV movie.

In real life, the shooting of the recaptured escapees was one of the charges at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trial of Hermann Göring and other Nazi leaders.

In the scene where they’re celebrating the Fourth of July, Steve McQueen is obviously thrown off by an ad-lib by Jud Taylor – you can see him mouth “What?”

Another escape also occurred at Stalag Luft III – it’s depicted in 1950’s The Wooden Horse.

There are only two surviving P.O.W.s from Stalag Luft III; Ken Rees and Gordon King.

During production, Charles Bronson met and fell in love with David McCallum’s wife, Jill Ireland. On set, he jokingly told McCallum he was going to steal her away. Four years later, Ireland and McCallum divorced, and she married Bronson.

The iconic motorcycle scenes in the film were not based on real life or the novel, but were added at Steve McQueen’s suggestion.

Real P.O.W.s asked filmmakers to exclude details about the maps, papers, and tools hidden in gift packages from their home countries, as it might jeopardize future P.O.W escapes. The filmmakers, of course, complied.

The actual escape that the film is based on occurred on March 24, 1944 – which was Steve McQueen’s birthday!

Every Move is a Game Changer

Pawn is a crime thriller about a night gone wrong for a group of folks just casually grabbing a bite to eat. The evening turns sour when a small group of criminals, led by a man by the name of “The Brit” (Michael Chiklis) hold the patrons hostage and demand the owner cracks the safe. One would assume this safe would be full of money, but that is not the case. After seeing the lack of money, the thief demands the owner opens the real safe. The only issue with the hidden safe is that it is set on a timer and can not be opened until midnight. The robbery takes a sudden turn of events when a cop (Forest Whitaker) wanders into the diner and instantly suspects something just is not right. As the night carries on, the motive behind the robbery is pieced together and revealed.

Video

Anchor Bay comes through with a very impressive 1080p transfer. The detail is pretty close to perfect throughout the movie. This is evident during the outside scenes, which are heavily illuminated by streetlights. The color scheme is done well, highlighted by the black levels and flesh tones. Overall the detail and color stay constant giving the viewer a pleasant experience. 4/5

Audio

Anchor Bay’s Dolby TrueHD 5.1 delivers a nice lossless transfer. The dialogue is clear and crisp along with the soundtrack. The dispersement of sounds through the speakers gives the viewer a feeling of being on the streets. You can hear everything from an ambulance in the distance to an animal making noises. Overall the sound is great. This along with the video give this flick a nice boost. 4/5

Special Features

*PAWN: Behind the Scenes

2/5

This movie was a decent surprise. The star studded cast gives a pretty strong performance. Michael Chiklis definitely commands the screen as the leader of the thieves. I thought this was going to be a typical hostage movie but was mistaken. The plot twists and compounded plot will have the viewer wondering what is going to happen next. 4/5
There have been rumors over the last couple weeks of the game being called “Ghosts” based on pre-order advertisements that have been leaked, but nothing official has been announced. I’m glad they are changing away from the “Modern Warfare” sub-title, but I just hope that means they are moving away from doing the exact same game 3 times in a row. I’ve become a huge fan of the Treyarch iterations of the game, whereas before I was a big proponent of the Infinity Ward installments.
