I’m going to show you today just how important it is in sales and life to present what really counts, emotion. Without having an emotional appeal you won’t “sell” anything. People don’t really “buy” anything they react to an emotion and then, take action.

Do they regret it in the end? No not as a rule. They’re happy with their purchase and wouldn’t ever consider asking for their money back. It’s a win-win situation. You’re providing a “warm fuzzy” and they are cuddling their newest purchase.

Do you buy a car because you just had to have one? Or did the salesperson introduce you to it by putting you behind the wheel? Do you remember the smell of the freshness inside of the car? Was the leather just to die for? And just listen to that sound system! You were hooked and the salesperson knew it from the beginning. You were his and now all you had to do was figure out how to afford it.

NOBODY REALLY “NEEDS” A PUPPY

You can’t disagree with that, right? Do you really “need” a puppy? Or, did you just fall in love with that helpless look, droopy eyes, cute little nose and that playfulness that exists in all little puppies? Nope, you don’t NEED a puppy but you know full well that you’re going to walk out of the shelter or pet shop with your newest friend and never look back in regret.

NOBODY IS HOLDING A GUN ON YOU.

You Don’t have to buy anything

But you will buy. Emotion takes over and you’re walking out of the door with your purchase.

So what do you do if you don’t own a brick and mortar-type store front? The same thing as if you did. You play on the customer’s emotion. You show by pictures, words, sound and video just how amazing having the product(s) would be if you were to make a purchase.

The advantage we as internet marketers have compared to someone that owns an offline business with high overhead is that we don’t have to charge an arm and a leg for our products. We can of course, but we don’t need to. Volume makes us money without having to literally force our customers to go to the bank for a loan. We sell low and often and by offering just one more thing we guarantee that they will return again and again.

Our objective is of course to make money. But, if you’re going out there and trying to make all of the money in one quick sale you might as well hang up your business hat, take a nap and wake up to smell the coffee burning later on. Sure, you might make one sale but you’ll never see the customer again.

So, how do we make the sale and keep the customer coming back again and again? It really is quite simple and I’ve already mentioned one way, keep the price low enough so anyone can afford your product. But there’s more and here it is.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

I see it all of the time especially in my local restaurant. Walking in the door is always going to be an interesting experience. Never do I know how (or if) I’ll be greeted quickly and with someone bearing a nice smile. I know for a fact that I’m going to spend way too much money on a cup of coffee and that if I get a second cup it will be a miracle. So why do I come back time and time again? Because there are a couple of servers there that always ensure that I am being well served. They make sure that my cup is always full and that they spend just a couple of extra seconds to greet me, make a comment or ask about my day. From that point on my purchase is emotional. I no longer care about the cost of the product. I’m just happy to be there socializing. In fact, one of the servers even got her name in the local paper not long ago because her regular customers recommended her as being one of the friendliest servers in the city. She knows your name and what you’ll order and has it on the table by the time you come in the front door. She meets you, greets you and seats you. You have to do nothing. How’s that for service? It should be the norm but alas it isn’t.

What would you do if you received a short thank you note from your local grocery store after having shopped there one day last week? Would you return? I think so. And what if the restaurant you visited last week remembered your child’s birthday with a special balloon when you next came in for dinner? Would you return? I think so. And if you haven’t visited in a while and they sent you a note just checking up on you… well, that is over the top service and you and your entire family will be visiting very soon I think, right? You bet I’m right.

So why isn’t this done? How is it that we in society have become so hardened that we just don’t seem to care about customer service any longer? The answer is simple. We’re greedy! And that brings us all the way back to pricing. Keep it low, keep it simple and CARE!

Last night while I was working I came across a gentleman sitting in the lobby working on an iPad. I noticed that it was white which indicated to me that it was the newest iPad2. I stopped and talked to him about it and what he thought about it compared to the original. He handed it to me and I was amazed at how lite it was and how thin. He said "I had the original but was able to sell it before the introduction of the new one. I only lost about $40.00." He was one of the lucky ones. I have the original 64gig wifi-3G iPad and it is a great little machine. However, I would really love to have the newest edition now that I've had it in my hands.
