I thought it would be perfect for the Cinnamon camisole, another great pattern from the local Colette Patterns. The pattern is very easy to follow and sews up quickly, the perfect criteria for a weekend project that gives you gratifying results. I think it turned out really cute, but perhaps the silk is a bit too heavy, in terms of not having enough stretch on the bias. I chose this particular fabric because I wanted something that could also be worn as a tank rather than only as an undergarment. The one mod I made was to do a small bust adjustment, which turned out to be a rather large bust adjustment (I made the size 4). Don't you think this cami would be cute sewn up in a Liberty fabric?
This is dress F-3, but made with some modifications: no lace trim, gathers instead of pleats, and shortened to above knee length. I picked up the print from the designer fabric sale at Modern Domestic a while back. It's a super soft cotton lawn weight fabric that sewed up nicely. I draped the pattern last week and used some silk from my stash that I got at a Bolt fabric sale. The silk is shiny on one side and matte on the other side. I chose the matte side as the right side of the fabric, so it would be a little less flashy. I like sewing silk, but this fabric was difficult to deal with because that one side was so slippery. I love the print though! This will look great under a blazer.
I'm not normally into prints like this, but the colors were attractive to me and it reminded me of a lot of the fabrics from Mociun and Rachel Comey. It's a cotton lawn weight and I thought it would be great for something summery. I had seen this Dusen Dusen dress a while back and loved the zipper front detail. It also comes in a number of prints that reminded me of the fabric I was using. So, with the Dusen Dusen dress as inspiration, I decided to drape something similar. The original dress has princess seaming, but I used front and back waist darts, as well as bust darts. My neckline is a little more squared off too, but other than that I think it comes close to the original. It's perfect for summer!
There are some great details: the pintucks on the front that you can't really see in the photos, the side ties, and the gathering in the front and back, depending on how tightly you tie the sides. This project was pretty quick and I can't believe I put it off for so long. The ties are a bit long, so I'll probably shorten them. I love vests for their versatility. I could wear this one with a t-shirt, button-down shirt, or dress. This vest turned out much better than I thought it would. I should make another one with some of the new Nani Iro double gauze that Bolt now carries.
I wanted to sew up a muslin prior to cutting up my Liberty fabric just to make sure it would be something that I liked. And the verdict is a thumbs up! I didn't take the time to sew in the casing or the ties on the muslin, but I think those will be cute details. This should be a quick project once I get the fabric cut.
I pulled out my collection of Rebecca pattern books and found a great sweater with smocked front in issue number 23. The sweater is worked in one piece crossways with a panel of interlocking cables in the center top section, which is the right amount of detail to keep me interested.
I had just finished all the decreases at the waist of the Soft Kid Bubble tunic when I looked at what I had knit and decided I didn't like it. There wasn't any specific reason, just that I don't think I would have worn a knitted tunic that often. So, I decided to frog all my knitting and start something new. I'm looking at another project from the Rowan Studio book (it has the Balloon Sleeve Top pattern I recently made). It's full of projects made with mohair and mohair blend yarns, which is exactly what this is. Perfect!
I was set on making a pintucked vest from the Homspun Japanese pattern book, but I found these other patterns that could work well too. This new Cynthia Rowley pattern could be cute, but I'm thinking I want something more fitted. Then I found this cute Sleeveless Liberty Blouse pattern on BurdaStyle that would be perfect for summer. I think I'm leaning toward the BurdaStyle pattern.
It's boring because I'm knitting stockinette stitch in the round and I'm supposed to knit about 14 inches of it. I have about two more inches to go before I start decreasing and then starting in on the front lace panel pattern. I've knit with this yarn in the past and I love the soft fabric it creates. The only negative is that the yarn sheds every time I start knitting.
I used thus striped silk that I bought recently at one of the Bolt sales. I'm a little undecided as to whether or not I like the dress. It fits well and I like the stripes, especially the V section of the bodice, but maybe it's the silk that I'm not completely digging. Maybe I should have chosen a different fabric? In regards to the pattern, the instructions were very clear and I like how the dress is completely lined. The only modification I made was to shorten the dress by about three to four inches.
I bought this Japanese craft book called Homspun. All of the patterns are for clothing that have buttons or ties rather than zippers. I was really drawn to the simple designs and thought they would be perfect for the Liberty fabric I bought recently. When I decided that I wanted to make this vest, I pulled the pattern paper out from the back of the book only to discover that the patterns were really a poster! There were no patterns. As you can see, the schematic shows all the pattern pieces with dimensions for the sewer to draft the pattern herself. I still have to slash the front of the vest to add the pintucks and then redraft it. This was a fun project for a Sunday afternoon!
I headed over to my LYS Close Knit this past weekend to get some yarn for my next knitting project, the Soft Kid Bubble tunic from Laura Irwin's Boutique Knits. I'm using the recommended yarn, GGH Soft Kid, in this lovely dijon color. It was a little more expensive than I initially wanted to spend, but I couldn't find an appropriate yarn substitute that would still create the light fabric of the Soft Kid. I swatched yesterday, so I'll spend tonight casting on 200+ stitches.
The fabric is silk that I bought several weeks ago from Bolt. I had cut out the fabric last weekend, but I was not looking forward to working with the silk, so I kept putting it off. I was worried that it would be slipping all over the place, but it wasn't nearly as troublesome as I anticipated. I made the tank top version of this pattern last year, but I really like this view with sleeves. Just a warning, the neckline is very wide.
Though the lace pattern was sometimes a pain to knit, I love how it turned out. You can see that the sleeves are slightly ballooned, but not too puffy. This will be a great transition piece as the spring weather gets a little warmer.
I hate doing alterations and had been putting them off for a while. I specifically wanted to redo this loose shirt I made back in September last year. I only wore it once because it was way too boxy and the sleeves were too puffy and big. I couldn't get rid of it though since I made it using this awesome Liberty print. I removed the sleeves and then took in about two inches at the side seams and added a tiny bit of shaping there. After I pinned the shirt at the sides and tried it on, I realized the shoulders were dropped enough that it appeared I already had a cap sleeve! What luck! All I had to do was hem the armholes. Below is what the shirt looks like now. I wore it today and will definitely wear it again.
It takes me a while to start sewng projects, but once I get started, I can't seem to stop. I finished this dress this morning and I must admit, it came out much cuter than I thought it would. I really love it! I had made the shirt view of this pattern a while back, but at a size 10, it was too small in the shoulders. So, this was made in a size 12 and it fits perfectly. As I mentioned in my previous post, I combined the view B elbow-length sleeves, minus the ties, with view A of the dress. The dress has darts in the back to make it slightly fitted, which I like. I decided to cut the pockets on the bias for some visual interest instead of completely matching them to the dress. I was also able to match the plaid at the side seams and the back seam. The only other mod I made was to use an invisible zipper instead of a lapped zipper. This dress will get worn during the upcoming work week!
I'm sewing up one of the Built By Wendy Simplicity patterns, 3835. I'm mashing up characteristics of both dresses into one. I'm making view A, which is longer, and adding the longer sleeves of view B, but not adding the ties. Here are the patch pockets that I cut on the bias and sewed on the other night. I used Casey's clever tip of tracing a pocket template out of cardstock and then ironing the edges of the pocket up around that. It worked like a charm!
I've been looking online and in local shoe stores and finally found these Marais Oxfords from Solestruck, the online shoe store that recently opened a brick and mortar shop in Portland's Pearl District. I wanted something that could be dressy, as well as casual and I think these fit that requirement nicely. They're made of canvas with a pink satin trim. They also come in black and a dark forest green.
