What is a suspension?

Having a functional and effective suspension system is a critical element of any modern automobile, no matter the size or shape.  Suspensions are used as a tool to increase the levels of friction between the vehicles tyres and the road, in an effort to flatten out any bumps on the roads surface and increase the handling of the vehicle.  The suspension also serves many other purposes, including stopping the vehicle from dipping during braking and preventing the vehicle from rolling when making a hard turn (fitting anti-roll bars will make this more effective).

How does it work?

In its most simple form, suspensions are made up of springs, shock absorbers and struts.  The springs can vary in design but the most commonly used heavy vehicle suspensions are leaf springs, which use multiple pieces of metal (leaves) to absorb the bumps in the road.  Unfortunately the springs aren’t very good at dispersing the forces placed upon it, so shock absorbers and struts are installed to release the energy in a safe and controlled manner.
