After some research the cheapest option we found was a West Midlands Day Ranger for £21.60 and £13.20 for Senior Citizens.&nbsp; This we decided would be started from Hereford, which was only an hours car drive from home.<br /> It was very cold on arrival at Hereford and got even colder has the day progressed but we persevered.&nbsp; To my surprise you can get a further £2 off with certain Rail Cards, also the tickets can be purchased on the train on the day of the journey, which is also good so you can choose the day and the weather.&nbsp; So a return from Crewe to Stafford was also purchased with my Rail Card so total fare from Barry to Stafford was to be £23 instead of £70 plus, I think that was really good value.&nbsp; So armed with a bag of sandwiches, hot water to make my own coffee, a note pad and the all important camera gear I was off on a very pleasant journey and day out.&nbsp; The countryside travelling up to Shrewsbury was a pleasure to view again, there are some spectacular views and of course this time of year the fields were filled with newly born lambs. I really do not understand why people bury their head in a book, newspaper mobile phone with such wonderful scenery to see.&nbsp; I travelled this line in the 50s and 60s very frequently due to my fathers family living just outside Shrewsbury, it was always a wonderful trip.&nbsp; My mothers words still ring in my ears has we passed the golf course not far outside Shrewsbury "we are nearly there time for a quick wash and get your things together", so long ago but the memories are still clear.&nbsp; Thanks go out to Brad Joyce whom I met at Stafford and was a very helpful young man giving heads up information on a few movements of that day.&nbsp; How Stafford has changed gone were the Locomotive hauled trains of 2003 which I think was the last time I visited, Classes 86/87 and 47 at speed and fully loaded with comfortable coaches were always an awesome sight.&nbsp;&nbsp; I got all my timings for the trains last night, the 7am Cross Country Voyager from Cardiff to Bristol Temple Meads, and then another Voyager from Bristol Temple Meads direct to Taunton in time for the 9am bus to the railway.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The 6am train to Cardiff was the Class 153 unit again 153367, and was nice and quiet, especially has I was still bleary eyed.&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> I had to make my way to Platform Zero for the train, yes I did say Platform Zero. Luckily I had my ticket from Barry to Cardiff&nbsp; but explaining to the ticket collector what I had done, she said there was a possibility I could get a replacement beings I had the date half with me and the Senior Rail Card I had bought it with.&nbsp; But knowing my luck that would only be a possibility.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> On arriving back at Barry I legged it to the house which was luckily only five minutes from the station, and lo and behold there was the little tinker on my computer desk, phew what a relief, I knew exactly what I had done, after every trip I remove the extra tickets to get from certain points from the wallet and put the Rover ticket back, obviously this time I hadn't. I was so pleased to see it there I can tell you.&nbsp; I legged it back to the station and caught the same train back to Cardiff, the ticket collector was also pleased I had found it, and I didn't have to pay again.&nbsp; Arriving back at Cardiff I was now only running half hour late due to the habit of always going a lot earlier than I needed to incase of delays to any connecting services, or numpties forgetting tickets.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The train to Bristol was now 158956 but I did not really care what I was on I was just glad to be on my way.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> I now didn't have any train times for the services to Taunton so a quick check on the boards at Bristol showed there was only ten minutes to wait for the 8.44am Cross Country Service to Taunton which was to be a Voyager.&nbsp; Settling down in a nice seat the train sped off at a fair rate of knots due to being a direct service to Taunton.&nbsp; I had not travelled this route for a long time so was a pleasant change to see some different scenery.&nbsp; Twenty five minutes into the journey and bang the brakes came on very heavily, and the train came to a very very quick halt from what I suspect was around the 100mph area, the last few yards juddering badly, people looked at each other has if to say that did not feel right.&nbsp; Suspecting an emergency I thought this is not turning out to be my day yet again.&nbsp; Twenty minutes stopped in the middle of nowhere, with the train manager walking up and down the train was quite worrying, but then came an announcement, "sorry for the delay we are experiencing signalling problems in this area and hopefully we will be on the move again shortly".&nbsp; We were soon off and arrived at Taunton with only a five minute wait for the bus.&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Sitting on the bus I could not help but overhear a conversation from some obvious Train Enthusiasts who were knowledgeable in their field, adorned with cameras and railway books and magazines.&nbsp; "Were you on that Voyager" one asked, "I sure was came the reply that was a bad stop",&nbsp; "Went through a red signal by a long way" came the reply.&nbsp; Apparently the one gentleman had overheard the train manager talking to another member of staff saying you will have to cover my duties has the driver had over run a red light, and the emergency brakes have come on,&nbsp; and she now had to go and sit by the driver before the train could proceed.&nbsp; Now this is only word of mouth and I have no proof this is what had actually happened, but the stop was definately an emergency stop, I could not help but feel a little bit cold inside thinking of what could have happened, if those emergency brakes had not kicked in.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> With a sigh of relief at long last I had arrived at Bishop Lydeard station, an all day rover ticket was purchased with hopefully an enjoyable and incident free few hours riding the steam trains.&nbsp; The guard's whistle and the trains whistle sounded and were off, on a journey of pure nostalgia like a time machine.&nbsp; The stations passed were as they were in days gone by all adorned with signs, milk churns and old railway trolleys from the past, and all well looked after with lots of pride.&nbsp; The station names sounded just has old world as the era the railway was depicting, Crowcombe, Stogumber, Williton, Watchet, Blue Anchor and Dunster just to name some.&nbsp; We passed rolling hills green fields and quaint cottages, as well as the numerous lineside photographers in strategically placed spots.&nbsp; At certain points we passed the train coming the other way, and people clambered to get a door window to get a photograph of the passing train, or even just to stand and listen to the sounds of the steam locomotives working their trains.&nbsp; The journey was unbelievable and well worth the trip, the full journey took one and half hours of sheer pleasure and comfort on real train seats.&nbsp;&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> We arrived at Minehead bang on time, a mass exodus of the train began, many going to the station shops, many just taking photographs and many just walking into the seaside town of Minehead itself.&nbsp; I was lucky enough to board the train hauled by No. 88 The Plan being to get back to Washford, has passing through the first time I noticed "Braunton" and some vintage wagons on show.&nbsp; I do love riding these old trains but sadly time goes by so fast when your enjoying&nbsp; To be honest it was quite a difficult journey the heat was unbearable in the carriages despite all windows open, with people cluttered around the open windowed doors to get some sort of breeze if it was only to be a little.&nbsp; I was really starting to struggle with the heat when we got back to Bishop Lydeard, and headed straight for the shop to get some cooling iced lollies and drinks, I suffer with heat problems anyways because of Thyroid problems and do not feel the cold, it was difficult for most on this journey but even more so for myself.&nbsp; I took a&nbsp; seat in the shade, plenty of fluids was priority, I took in the smells and sights for a while whilst I rested.&nbsp; Sufficiently recovered I had a wander around the station buildings, model railways and museums, and following one last photograph I made my way to the now awaiting bus back to Taunton.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; I will be back<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: justify;"> My transport home from Taunton was a Class 150/1 and was on its way to Cardiff which was okay plenty of windows and plenty of leg room on a hot day, and I was pleasantly suprised at the speed, I am not sure if they have had any modifications or not.&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Another one of my gaffs was imminent, I did not check the stopping stations for this service.&nbsp; Pulling into the seaside town of Weston Super Mare on a Saturday on probably one of the hottest days of the year albeit the 1st of October was a big mistake, whilst viewing what must have been a few hundred passengers adorned with beach gear and red skin like lobsters clambering towards the not yet open doors of a 2 coach Class 150 is kind of scary and I couldnt help thinking to myself why did I not check.&nbsp; But suprisingly they did all get on but it was now wall to wall hot bodies. </span>The journey didn’t seem so bad this morning or maybe it was me getting used to the full train.</div> <div class="MsoBodyText" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"> A few freights were sighted during the wait for my train on arrival at Cardiff, 66038 in charge of the weekday intermodal service to Barry Dock.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>66011 passing with a coal train for Aberthaw closely followed by 66181 empty coils working with BAA wagons heading for Margam.</div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"> The 9am Cardiff Central to Plymouth arrived and was to be First Great Western 150238, another class 150 working this long trip unbelievable must be a regular thing.</div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"> Has I munch on my breakfast I was watching the mist swirling in areas of the countryside, I couldn’t help thinking I hope the weather people have not got it wrong again.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>Hitting the Severn Tunnel at speed proved to be a chilling experience, and a quick drop in temperature brought a shiver to the body, maybe the T-shirt was not such a good idea after all.</div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"> Dropping down into Bristol I noticed the old Barton Hill Depot now had the letters LNWR on the walls, a new owner maybe, apparently not, making investigations it’s a subsidiary company of Arriva Trains and is now a train maintenance facility, but there again it always was wasn’t it. In the depot was one of the rail washing machines with 66175 at the head, now this was a true sign autumn is here.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; </span>On arrival at Bath Spa it was found the next London Paddington train was stopping at Didcot rather than change at Swindon so a quick scurry down the stairs to purchase a ticket from Swindon to Didcot has Didcot is outside the limits of my Rail Rover, which is only has far as Swindon.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>On approach to the group a one rather excited spotter shouted the 47s are coming the 47s are coming, you don’t ask questions at that eagerness and camera was grabbed from the bag just had time to turn and fire off a barrage of shots, wow a pair of DRS Class 47s on what I was to find out was the boat train from Glasgow to Southampton.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>I learned the lesson many years ago to more or less have your camera ready to fire when u get it out the bag sometimes even on automatic, I have lost to many shots by being not ready for spur of the moment things.</span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; The sun was setting fast and the view was fading fast.&nbsp; On approach to Bristol Parkway the train veered in a direction I wasnt used to at that point, and on arrival I could see we had actually moved right across the platforms to the platform normally used by local services.&nbsp; With three HSTs in the platforms my heart sank, there has got to be a problem I think this is where my luck runs out.&nbsp; Soon there&nbsp;appeared a constant stream of passengers approaching our train, the flow went on and on, a young man sat by me, what train have you all come off I enquired.&nbsp; The man said we been sitting on that HST over there for an hour the tunnel is closed.&nbsp; With that the dreaded announcement a previous train had reported hitting something in the tunnel and Network Rail had closed the tunnel for investigation, this train would now take a much longer route via Gloucester apologies to all passengers using this&nbsp;route today.&nbsp; The young man asked if I could wake him up on approach&nbsp;to Cardiff has he was very tired and had travelled thousand of miles all the way from Australia without a&nbsp;problem, get within half&nbsp;hour of Cardiff and chaos.&nbsp; The train departed obviously after getting on has many passengers&nbsp;has they could.&nbsp;&nbsp;The train was slow and with&nbsp;now not being able to see out it was very difficult to judge where we actually were.&nbsp; </span>The train eventually arrived 150240, it was&nbsp;considerably quieter passenger wise due to it being a Saturday.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>I cannot help staring out of the window thinking the weather people have got it wrong again, they said sunny, and its dark and cloudy, why do I make plans listening to them.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: small;">Never seen so many barges on the river and canals on the approach to Bath Spa whick made for a pleasant sight and perhaps worth a photography visit one day.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>One couple jumped up and about half the coach followed, I was correct most were on a day trip or to work at Bath Spa.</span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: small;">I settled down to taking in the sights of the trip but always one eye on the dark clouds, which were beginning to annoy me.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>On leaving Warminster, we passed the military barracks and passed row upon row of modern looking military vehicles, I thought we were short of equipment for the forces or it could be that it’s the wrong kind of equipment that’s the usual excuse.</span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: small;">Southampton seemed to arrive very quickly compared with previous visits and I had 35 minute wait for the Eastleigh train.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>I took a stroll up and down the platforms to stretch the legs after being cramped up in the seats for a couple of hours.</span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: small;">South West trains Class 158 was the train to Eastleigh and wow what a difference the same type of Class 158 train I had just got off but with twice the legroom and double the cleanliness. </span></div> <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: small;">Eastleigh, still the same has the last time I visited, but annoyingly the sky seemed darker than ever.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>I had a few hours at Eastleigh but with very few locomotive movements and low light I was getting increasingly bored and fed up.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>Having to use I high ISO was also discouraging me from taking photographs due to the production of high levels of grain in images, which was a pet hate of mine.&nbsp;<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp;</span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: small;">I had to find the toilets, “closed due to vandalism” the sign read that made my decision for me, I had to move on.&nbsp; After arriving and getting a comfort break at long last, I scrutinised the departure boards where to go.&nbsp; The next train to arrive was for Weymouth, the decision was made, I boarded the Class 444 with the intention of going to Weymouth, and first impressions hit me right in the face, the train was cool there was plenty of coaches and plenty of seats and the overall appearance was very clean and comfortable with 100 percent more leg room per seat making for a much more comfortable journey.&nbsp; We sped through wonderful countryside, which I can presume to be the New Forest, and followed the coast&nbsp;of Poole Harbour for some time.&nbsp; I love these trains I thought with a smile to myself and could travel for hours very comfortable and relaxing.&nbsp; It was a couple of hours to Weymouth and on arrival I enquired on trains back or trains to Bristol direct, there was a 17.28pm direct train to Bristol Temple Meads, that would give me an hour and half to look around.&nbsp; text-align: left;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: small;">I was enjoying the sun and the visit to Weymouth so much, I almost forget the time and sadly had to make an hastily retreat back to the station.&nbsp; </span></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-size: small;">There was a crowd of about a 100 on the&nbsp;empty platform with 2 Class 444,s on the others, examing the departure boards, my fears were founded the crowd were waiting for the train I had planned to travel on, and what was even more worrying was the departure board showed it was to be a 1 coach train, a Class 153 all that way with all them people I don't think so.&nbsp; A quick phone call to my son back in Barry, and a check on the internet showed if the next Class 444 departure in a few minutes was on time arriving at Southampton I would have ten minutes to spare to catch my connection, I could get home the way I came.&nbsp; The decision didnt take long to make, with the horrible vision&nbsp;of a 3 hour trip on&nbsp;class 153 in my mind, &nbsp;I didnt take much persuasion to board the class 444, this was the &nbsp;best and most comfortable way to travel back. The long journey home commenced, my thoughts drifted on how nice it was at Weymouth and If I had given it some more thought I could have looked for B &amp; B, and stayed, sighs oh well maybe another time.
