Did you know that, according to the Mayo Clinic, women are twice as likely as men to experience depression at some point in their lives?

Women even have different symptoms of depression than men and can end up self-medicating or trying to cope with it in different ways. You might find it hard to concentrate at work, have difficulty maintaining healthy relationships, or isolate yourself from social situations because you simply can’t work up the energy to connect with people.

Fortunately, depression can be treated and there are a number of things you can do to reduce your risk of a serious depressive episode.

And since most of us never attended a counselling course in our life, here are some useful tips for women dealing with depression:

1. Recognize the signs and symptoms of depression. Symptoms of depression in women may include varying levels of the following: depressed mood; loss of interest in daily activities; suicidal thoughts; feelings of guilt and hopelessness; sleeping more or sleeping less than usual; lack of energy and fatigue; significant changes in appetite or weight fluctuations.

2. Check in with your doctor about hormonal problems. Hormone fluctuations throughout the month can trigger depressive phases. If your periods of depression tend to coincide with your menstrual periods and menstrual cycle, it may be worth getting a hormone test from your doctor.

Many women experience extreme fatigue, irritability, and low mood right before their period. The effects of PMS are simply more exaggerated in some people than others. If you are suffering physically or emotionally because of PMS, your doctor may be able to prescribe you medication that will help you better manage your symptoms.

3. Start working out regularly. Exercise can be very effective for boosting your mood and increasing your energy level. If you’re always feeling low, start working out at least four to five times per week.

Simply getting out of the house and moving can help to combat fatigue and feelings of malaise. You’ll find that you’re in a much better mood immediately after exercise and your body will benefit as well.

4. Get plenty of sleep. Ideally, you want to get at least eight hours of quality sleep every night. Depression can throw off your sleep schedule so you’ll want to take steps to ensure you are getting plenty of sleep each and every night.

Rearrange the bedroom if you have to, play relaxing music before you go to bed, or take a warm bath right before bedtime so you can relax naturally. Get yourself on a steady sleep schedule so your body can restore its natural circadian rhythm – you’ll notice a significant improvement in mood as a result.

5. Eat a well-rounded diet. Many women turn to food for comfort when they ‘re feeling anxious, stressed, or depressed. Make eating healthy a priority so you don’t end up gaining weight or setting yourself up for a host of health problems. Gaining weight in itself can trigger more depression and lead to feelings of low self-esteem.

Eat a good breakfast each morning and reduce or eliminate consumption of junk food, excess sugar, high-fat foods, and too much caffeine.

6. Practice natural relaxation techniques. Reduce stress naturally by practicing yoga, spending time at the spa, or getting a massage. Learn meditation to clear your mind of negative thoughts and just enjoy the silence.

Sometimes stress is something that you produce internally with your own mind. Learning how to relax and enjoy some peace of mind can ward off depression and improve your overall well-being.

7. Bring more light into your living space. Natural sunlight can boost your mood and also ward off feelings of depression. Make sure your living space has plenty of well-lit areas and try and get outside for even just 20 minutes per day.

Having lunch outside, walking to the neighborhood coffee shop, or just spending some time the garden can help you feel more grounded and connected to the rest of the world.

8. Stay in touch with friends and relatives. Don’t isolate yourself to the point that you lose contact with close friends and family members. Make an effort to chat on the phone or meet up for coffee.

Even a quick email or text message to say hello can be a prompt to get some two-way communication going. Don’t avoid people in hopes of getting better – you will probably get better when you stay in touch with people and can communicate openly.

Surely by now you know how the stretchmarks came to be on your abdomen, but just in case you’ve forgotten – they showed up because your stomach stretched past the capacity of your skin. This may be because you gained a lot of weight quickly, but most likely you got your stretch marks the same way millions of other women did – by getting pregnant and carrying your baby to term.

The real question is, however, now that you have stretch marks, what are you going to do about them?

There are lotions and potions you can try to help the marks fade, but the fact of the matter is, stretchmarks fade on their own over time to a silvery white color, and they are generally visible in certain lights and angles, no matter how much cream you rub on your stomach and how many sit-ups you do. To add insult to injury, often the skin that is peppered with stretchmarks often has a bit too much give to it as well – it’s like an overinflated balloon that’s lost all the air.

At this point there are only two real choices a woman faces. Do you remove the stretch marks or do you ignore them?

Ignoring Stretchmarks
Skin will only bounce back so much after pregnancy. You may be a mother who got lucky after the first baby and got her flat, smooth tummy back rather quickly. But then, with the second baby, the skin of your abdomen might have just given in and decided to stay stretched. No amount of lotion – even with collagen and tightening elements, can hold it all together for you in the long-term.

But it can do a bit to smooth out the remaining belly at least. Wearing high-waisted panties rather than bikini briefs can do a lot to hide some of the most prominent stretch marks as well. For many women, this is as far as they are willing to go in the battle against stretch marks. They toss out the string bikini, grab the tankini that covers the belly comfortably and get on with their lives. It’s a healthy reaction to life and living changing the bodies of mothers, but it’s not the only option available.

Removing Stretchmarks
There is a well-known surgical procedure that easily removes virtually all stretchmarks and that loose skin as well. A tummy tuck cuts away a swatch of skin and tissue and then pulls the remaining skin down to the pubic area, permanently erasing stretchmarks on your mid and lower abdomen. As a side benefit, the surgeon performing the tummy tuck surgery uses special stitches to close up any gaps between the muscles of the abdomen and make your core muscles tighter and stronger as well.

The thought of a tummy tuck puts many women at odds. Is cosmetic surgery really the answer and just how much does a tummy tuck cost? The short answer is that only you can decide if surgery is the right answer for you, but the results truly last a lifetime since the damaged skin is completely removed from the body.

The price, of course, reflects the long-lasting results and skill of the surgeon performing the procedure, but there are ways to make the surgery reasonable. Ultimately many women decide that the tummy tuck surgery, even with its moderate price tag, is worth it to avoid dealing with stretch marks and pouchy skin for the next forty, fifty or even sixty years.

It’s time to think outside the box when it comes to your bathroom, in particular the shower. One hundred years ago, you might have had your bathtub in the kitchen, or even outdoors in the shed! Regular baths became more popular once they were relocated inside the house, (and inside the bathroom!). In truth, the bathroom design really didn’t change too much for the next 100 years. After World War II, Showers became a popular feature in every home, and today, the daily shower is considered de rigueur when it comes to good grooming.

Well, bathroom design has finally turned a corner. Do you ever wish you could linger in the shower and enjoy the steam? That’s because, according to experts, we take comfort in the shower, in particular the steam, by unwinding from everyday stresses. The obvious answer, of course, is to have a separate steam shower in which you can lie down and relax. Until now, the only way to accomplish this was to head to the spa and spend a decent dollar to unwind in a steam shower or whirlpool bath.

The greatest irony is the fact that the more technology advances in order to make life easier, the more hectic our lives become. Well, here’s one technological advance that speaks to this problem: the in-home steam shower. According to bathroom suppliers, there has been an increase in sales of these showers as more and more homeowners are turning their existing bathrooms into home spa retreats. However, the steam shower has many more uses than to simply relax. For centuries, steam has been used for healing a number of ailments. For instance, because steam helps to relax tense muscles, it also benefits people who suffer from arthritis, as the steam provides relief for sore joints.

Medical professionals say that steam’s vapors relieve sore throats, coughing, nasal congestion, bronchitis, asthma, sinusitis and symptoms of allergies. This is because the steam opens up the airways in a natural way, loosening mucous and enabling more oxygen to enter into the lungs. And there’s much more. The high temperatures stimulate the lymphatic system, thereby increasing blood circulation and speeding up metabolism. There are several health advantages in this action. First, higher metabolism equals weight loss. Second, increased blood circulation means more oxygen is being delivered to every part of your body. The elevated temperature also stimulates the immune system, which in turn, causes your body to produce more white blood cells, enabling you to fight off more diseases, such as the common cold and flu. Finally, steam opens up the pores or your skin, enabling trapped oil and dirt to escape naturally. This process leaves your skin clean, glowing and flush with rejuvenation.

One of the best features of a steam shower is that it arrives as a one-piece, leak-proof unit, and can be installed wherever there is a water supply. You can modernize your bathroom and, at the same time, enjoy the benefits that the luxury of steam provides.

Thread veins are a common and irritating problem for lots of ladies because they create a lot of embarrassment about the appearance of the legs particularly when the sun comes out and everyone starts wearing shorts and skirts.

Fortunately thread veins can be treated quite successfully by a technique called injection sclerotherapy. Sadly the word ‘injection’ makes a lot of people understandably apprehensive, but in reality the needles used are so tiny that most patients barely feel them – the sensation is a little similar to acupuncture.

Injection sclerotherapy is in essence very simple. The doctor will insert a very tiny needle into the very tiny vein and inject a small volume of a chemical called a sclerosant into the vein. This is the skillful part as it can be very tricky to get the injection in the correct place. For this reason it is important to be treated by someone who is experienced in the technique as if the injection is not directly into the vein then it wont work at all.

There are several types of sclerosant used to treat thread veins in the UK – the commonest one is called Fibrovein – its chemical name is Sodium tetradecyl sulphate (or STD for short). Fibrovein is in fact a detergent by its chemical nature. The way it works is to disrupt the inside lining of the vein – in fact to make a chemical burn on the inside of the vessel. When this happens the blood in the vein clots and looks on the outside like a bruise. The bruise then slowly resolves and eventually goes away.

After the injections most practitioners will put a compressive bandage on the leg to squash the vein flat. This squeezes the blood out of the vein and gets it to seal with as little bruising as possible. Usually bandages will be worn day and night for about 3 days and then a pair of compression stockings for about 2 weeks after that. Opinion and practice do vary a little from person to person but most practitioners do recommend some form of compression after injections for thread veins.

Patients undertaking thread vein removal can expect to walk out of the treatment room straight away and be able to resume normal activities immediately.

The number of treatment sessions required depends on several things – most obviously the number of thread veins the patient has on the legs. The reason that several sessions are needed is because Fibrovein is a drug and there is a limit to how much of it can be used in one session. Most patients can expect to have between 2 to 4 sessions of sclerotherapy to get a decent cosmetic result from treatment.

From the patients point of view the initial appearance of the veins after sclerotherapy treatment is worse then before the injections! This can cause a bit of alarm for patients over the first two weeks or so after the injections.

However the bruising starts to die down after a fortnight or so and within a few weeks there usually some brown stains left over where the vein used to be. These brown marks usually fade away over the course of a couple of months – although in rare cases I have seen them persist for up to a year.

Unfortunately the thread veins can come back and it is quite common for patients to revisit for a ‘top up’ session of sclerotherapy about once a year to keep the veins under control.

This post was written by Eddie Chaloner. Mr Chaloner qualified in 1989 from Oxford University, and was appointed as a consultant vascular surgeon in 2002. Mr Chaloner has been a pioneer in the vascular treatment field, and from his clinic uses Sclerotherapy for thread vein removal for hundreds of patients per year.

So your best friend is getting married, and you’ve been nominated maid of honor. Congratulations! As you know, the bride-to-be has entrusted you with great responsibility, and you don’t want to let her down. Since part of your job is ensuring that everything, including the days leading up to the wedding as well as the big day, runs as smoothly as possible, here are a few ways to be the best maid of honor a woman could ever want.

#1: Go Shopping

One of the best parts of being a maid of honor is helping the bride choose her wedding gown. Remember, this is the day that she’ll want to look the best she ever has, and choosing the perfect dress is crucial. Offer constructive criticism of each dress she tries on. When you know she’s happy with the one she’s picked out, lavish her with compliments and make her feel like a queen.

#2: Party Planning

Aside from the day of the wedding, there may be other parties you’re expected to coordinate or host. The most fun is the hen party. Depending on your friend’s personality, it could be as tame as jetting off for a weekend by the beach for some cocktails or having a true VIP experience at some of the best clubs in your city. A stress-free option is to go with a travel agency like Release Travel who specializes in hen parties. Other events you’ll need to plan include the bridal shower and possibly an engagement party for close friends and family members.

#3: Be the Best Friend

The most important role you play as a maid of honor is being a supportive friend. Is the bride stressed out about seating arrangements? Offer helpful suggestions and a few alternatives to calm her down. Maybe there are problems with the caterer or floral arranger? Take it upon yourself to straighten out any issues that may arise with vendors. The most common problem she might face is getting cold feet a few days before. Give her a hug and remind her how much she loves her fiancé and help her imagine the beautiful life they’ll lead together. Remember, she chose you for a reason. Go out of your way to support her in any and every way possible.

Helping to plan a wedding and being a maid of honor is an exciting adventure for everyone involved. Be the best you can be and ensure that the bride has the time of her life.

About the author: Release Travel (http://releasetravel.co.uk) offers hen party travel packages for all budgets and party styles. Check out their website to choose the best hen party for the bride to be.

It is very common for many women to want to retain their maiden name. Taking on your soon-to-be husband’s last name can be something that you just don’t want to do, but feel you must. Fortunately for you there is increasing popularity and acceptance of making the decision to hold on to your identity.

Professional

In this day and age, women are making a name for themselves in the professional world. If you are a single woman who has built a reputation for herself with respect to your career, it could be detrimental to your future business if you were to change your name. Although you can notify your current business relationships of your name change, it will be difficult to find you for those who have heard of you in the past if you have a different name.

If you want to change your name, but are afraid of what it may do to your career, there is another option. You can hyphenate and use your maiden name in the business world and use your married name in your personal world. In time, you may be able to transfer over to your married name if you use your hyphenated name for professional purposes.

Familial Name

You may be the only child left to carry on the family name. This can be important to many families as it can be sad to see the family name die off because there are no more males to carry on the name. In this case, you may decide to hyphenate in order to include your family name with your future offspring. Your children can then have either your last name or the hyphenated name; you make the choice.

Don’t Want To

Not wanting to take your husband’s name is okay too. You have lived your whole life with your last name, and there is no shame in wanting to keep it. There are many reasons for this and none of them should be dismissed:

- Your husband’s last name just doesn’t sound right with your first name. This is especially true when you both have names that are indicative of your family’s culture.
- You have an unusual last name and your husband has a common one. Spending your whole life with a last name that no one else has and marrying a man with the last name of Jones may be an adjustment that you just can’t make.
- You just don’t like your husband’s last name. You may love your husband with everything in you, however his last name is just something you can’t live with for the rest of your life.

He Can Do It Too

Men can change their last names just as well as you can. There is no need to think that this is something that is a one way street. If you and/or your husband are adamant about the fact that you both must have the same last name, but you just can’t bring yourself to make the change yourself, consider having him take on your name. If the reason for not wanting to make the change is because you don’t like his last name, you could combine both of your last names to create an all new one.

Becoming one with your marriage vows does not mean that you have to give up your personal identity. It is true that you are creating a new life with the man of your dreams, but it doesn’t mean that you have to throw your past out the window.

There has been a lot of recent buzz about the benefits of adding maca, a Peruvian root, to your diet. Those who have eaten maca report a variety of benefits, but the jury is still out regarding its exact uses for health and medicinal purposes. This plant is still being studied, although the residents of the Andes region where it grows have long sworn by it.

Pushing all hyperbole and extravagant claims aside, here are several hard and fast facts about maca:

Maca is a radish-like vegetable that has grown in the Andes for millennia. It has long been used for medicinal and culinary purposes by the Andeans. It is a member of the mustard plant family and establishes huge root systems. When maca is used as a food or medicine, its roots are harvested, not the green leaves that are above ground.

Andeans have long valued maca for its high nutrition and its stimulating properties. They have used it to treat fatigue, anemia and even tuberculosis and infertility. Even the ancient Incas used maca.

Maca comes in powdered, solid or liquid (extract) form and can be found in many health food stores. It can be purchased in capsules or tablets. The Andeans eat maca in porridge most often, and it is a staple in their diet.

Indisputably, maca contains high levels of iron, potassium, zinc, calcium and magnesium. It is higher in iron and iodine than the potato, for example. It is also rich in antioxidants and vitamin B-12, which improve one’s energy levels.

Maca’s reputation as an aphrodisiac could be true, although further tests are being done to verify this claim. The root does contain some elements that could be used to treat erectile dysfunction, for instance, and it has seemed to increase women’s sexual satisfaction also. Stay tuned for scientific proof of this claimed property of maca. Any other medicinal uses of maca are not independently verified by the scientific community yet. Maca might also relieve some symptoms of menopause (like Remifemin does).

Maca could also be useful in improving the stamina of patients undergoing cancer treatments. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is investigating this now.

As with any substance, you should check in with your health care provider before buying huge quantities of maca. If you suffer from thyroid problems or are pregnant or nursing, don’t take maca.

A typical dose of maca is 450 mg in pill form, taken three times per day with food.

Maca can be found mixed with chocolates in some stores. The herb is added to a variety of snacks and can be purchased as a powder and added at home to cookie and other baked goods recipes. Some people add maca to smoothies, salads, soups and teas as well. Judgments on its taste range from pleasant to inoffensive.

Researchers continue to investigate the effects of maca on human beings. If you were to travel to the Andes, the people would probably tell you that maca can solve everything from infertility to tuberculosis. Although testing in modern laboratories has not confirmed such claims, the initial results are promising to back the claim that maca increases energy and sexual performance, a claim the Andeans have long made, based on watching animal behavior after livestock have feasted on the plant.

No extremely harmful side effects have been identified with maca, when taken in reasonable dosages. At this point, the idea of “it can’t hurt but could help” seems to apply. Maca is loaded with all kinds of fantastic nutrients and could boost your body’s intake of several important vitamins and minerals as you ingest tablets or sprinkle maca powder on a variety of foods or in various recipes.

Do you envision a tall, dark, and handsome hunk in shining armor saving you whenever the snarled jaws of danger rear its ugly head? Are you the type to expect your man (or any man, really) to be at your beck and call no matter what? SNAP OUT OF IT SISTER. You’re not a character in one of Shakespeare’s poems. This is 2012; women are liberated- and damn proud of it! You shouldn’t have to rely solely on a male to tend to your every need. Okay, we’re not saying to totally abolish the male species, but jeez girl, you need to learn how to think and act for yourself. We realize men can be useful for distributing back massages, telling you how cute you are, and pounding that drunk jerk at the bar into the ground, but strong, independent women are insanely sexy. Let’s take a look at a few tips for grabbing your inner damsel in distress and teaching her a thing or two.

Define Yourself: First things first. Figure out what you like about yourself and what needs some sprucing up. Do you hate the way you agree with everyone, even if inside your head you’re saying the total opposite? How about your inability to make a decision and stick with it? Your hair? The clothes you wear? The latter are tangible but can still definitely contribute to the way you carry yourself. If there’s a topic you want to know more about, research it. Pore over books and learn; knowledge is power. Media and society are notorious for trying to mold us into something we’re not. Be true to yourself and discover who you really are as a person; be comfortable in your own skin. Adventure, explore, grow, push yourself to your limit. It may seem easier said than done, but it is possible. Once you do discover yourself, your confidence will radiate above anything else.

Independent Women: Just like Destiny’s Child crooned, independent women depend on themselves. Want that brand new Audi convertible? Put in extra hours, take out a loan, cut back on going out to eat, hell- sort through some old jewelry and see how much each diamond’s worth. Healthy relationships revolve around wanting to be with the other person or wanting to ask for help now and then, not needing them for everything. That’s just being clingy. The moral is this: if you work hard to purchase something you truly want, you’ll be rewarded not only with the object you’ve been eying up, but with an all-consuming feeling of accomplishment. It’s ecstasy, really, knowing you have the power to obtain anything you desire. Call us weird, but that feeling is something every woman should feel, and until you do, you won’t know what we’re talking about. Plus, when you do eventually acquire that stunning Audi, you’ll have all the boys’ attention, hook, line, and sinker. Oh, the life of a vixen.

Manage Space: Okay, so we get that you enjoy spending a great deal of time with your significant other, or potential hookup…or whatever. But here’s the thing: you both need your own space. Why? You know that thing he does that you find irresistibly cute now? Yeah, that’s about to get annoying after 2 consecutive weeks of being by his side 24/7. Trust us. Learn to do activities on your own or with other people you enjoy being around as well; schedule a weekly girls’ night, get a mani/pedi by yourself every month, join a gym with your best friend. Being together 24/7 (with anyone) can eventually smother your relationship, causing resentment or even a falling out. This way, the time you do spend together with your boy toy will be ten times sweeter because it’s not a habitual thing. A certain amount of distance adds spice, ladies. Plus, clingy broads are just plain annoying.

One of the facts of life you will probably have to face as you age is declining vision. It’s rare that anyone gets to keep the perfect vision they once had in their younger years as they age into their senior years. Some forms of vision impairment due to aging are more common, while others can be prevented or delayed depending on lifestyle habits.

Even if you do develop age-related vision impairment in your later years, an ophthalmologist can help you determine, which, if any vision correction surgeries can restore or improve your sight.

What Vision Impairments are Caused by Aging?

Cataracts: By the age of 80, nearly half of all seniors in the United States have developed cataracts to some extent. A cataract is essentially a cloud that forms in the lens of the eye, preventing light from entering and therefore impairing vision. Because cataracts develop very gradually, many people aren’t aware that they have them unless they get their eyes checked regularly by an eye doctor.

Macular Degeneration: Also one of the most common vision impairments in the elderly, macular degeneration affects the retina of the eye. This eye disease is typically seen in individuals after the age of 45. Like cataracts, vision loss from macular degeneration is also gradual, and is typically diagnosed by an eye doctor through regular visits.

How Can You Prevent Premature Vision Loss?

Regular Check Ups

It’s better to catch vision problems before time allows them to get worse. Scheduling an eye appointment every 12 months is a good habit to get in to, especially for those older than 40. Early diagnosis and treatment of any eye disease symptoms can help prolong your vision for much longer than if left untreated for long periods of time.

Protect Your Eyes From the Sun

Everyone should be conscious of how exposed their eyes are to the sun. Even if you already wear glasses or contacts, protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays is an essential part of preserving your vision as you age. Make sure you always have a pair of sunglasses on hand.

Eat a Balanced Diet

While there is a lot of speculation about particular foods that can improve eyesight, a general rule of thumb is to ensure that overall, your diet is providing you with all of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Foods that benefit your body will also benefit your eyes, especially vitamins C, A and E.

Correcting Vision with Surgery

Cataract surgery has improved immensely over the past several decades – what used to be extremely painful and require and lengthy recovery period now can be completed in a matter of minutes, involves little to no pain, and requires virtually no recovery period. During a cataract procedure, the clouded lens of the eye is broken up with a laser, removed, and replaced with an artificial lens. Depending on the design and quality of this artificial lens, some patients can experience perfect or near-perfect vision for the rest of their life with no need for glasses or contacts.

Surgery for macular degeneration is also an option, though the results aren’t as successful as cataract surgery. Laser surgery for macular degeneration is helpful in improving the condition and preventing it from worsening, however, surgery cannot usually reverse the effects of macular degeneration.

Don’t wait till it’s too late to start taking care of your eyes!
