Tokyo police are investigating boy band JO1 member Shion Tsurubo over illegal gambling on an online casino.

Tsurubo admitted the allegations, commenting, “I became obsessed with online gambling for a while because it’s so easy to access with a smartphone.”

Online casinos are illegal in Japan, but a recent police report estimated over 3 million people in the country engage in online casino gambling, spending ¥1.24 trillion ($8.4 billion) a year.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Tsurubo had deposited a total of about ¥15 million ($104,000) to an online casino site since December 2023. He claims he stopped the activity upon realizing that it was illegal. In total, he is believed to have incurred a net loss of around ¥7 million ($48,000).

Tsurubo’s talent agency, Lapone Entertainment, announced on May 31 that he had used an online casino in the past. He was suspended from activities for 10 days.

Boy band members have strict rules about their behavior, and any wrongdoing usually leads to suspension or forced resignation. The police have asked for a “strict punishment” in their papers to prosecutors, requesting an indictment.

JO1 debuted in 2020 and has sold millions of albums in Japan. The band has 11 members, including Tsurubo, but it is likely he will be kicked out of the group, given the allegations.

Other Japanese celebrities caught in gambling scandals

This week TV personality Kenta Yamamoto also issued a public apology over his use of online casinos. Yamamoto disappeared from screens on May 28 with network Fuji TV citing his gambling as cause for suspension.

A network spokesperson commented, “It has come to light that one of our employees, Kenta Yamamoto, has used online casinos in the past. When suspicions arose, as a company, we made the decision to suspend him. We will continue to consult with the relevant agencies to confirm the facts. We will also take strict action in accordance with our employee regulations.”

Kuruma Takahira, a comedian, has also not been seen on TV since admitting he used online casinos back in February. Takahira admitted on his YouTube channel that “I used online casinos without realizing it is illegal to do so.”

Lawmakers have increased scrutiny on illegal gambling websites recently and a bill proposing stricter penalties passed the lower house earlier this month. Under the bill’s terms, violators may face fines up to ¥500,000 ($3500) or imprisonment for repeat offenders. Social media platforms have also been ordered to remove promotions for illegal gambling sites.

Japan targets individual gamblers as well as operators

Japan, unlike many countries, often targets individuals over illegal gambling rather than purely focusing on illegal operators. A man was arrested last month over allegations he gambled as much as ¥28 billion ($190 million) as well as encouraging others to sign up at illegal gambling sites through social media.

Makoto Chomabayashi believed he would not be prosecuted as online gambling is widespread in the country. He commented, “News reports said there were hundreds of thousands of players in Japan, so I thought I was only the tip of the iceberg.”

The Australian arm of the Japanese consumer tech giant MIXI has revised its proposal for the acquisition of PointsBet, offering a more attractive price. This offer comes as PointsBet considers a separate takeover proposal by Betr Australia.

MIXI Australia Seeks to Acquire PointsBet

In February 2025, MIXI Australia submitted a proposal to acquire PointsBet for approximately AUD 353 million ($229 million, current conversion rates). The proposal followed a separate proposal from BlueBet sought to acquire the Australian sportsbook for AUD 340 million ($220.5 million).

In April, however, Betr Entertainment, which acquired BlueBet in 2024, submitted a new offer for PointsBet, valuing PointsBet at AUD 360 million ($233.5 million), which would consist of AUD 260 million in cash, as well as AUD 100 million in betr scrip.

Betr further asserted that synergies could amount to over AUD 40 million a year, delivering a potential value outcome of AUD 1.33 per share for PointsBet shareholders.

At the time of Betr’s offer, PointsBet leaders said that it represents a superior offer. Shortly after that, PointsBet has published a new update regarding Betr Entertainment’s acquisition proposal, proposing that a form of mutual due diligence be undertaken by Pointsbet and Betr.

However, PointsBet didn’t rule out the MIXI proposal either.

MIXI Puts Forward $258M

MIXI just provided an update on its planned acquisition, saying that its board has agreed to increase the proposed price for the acquisition to AUD 398 million ($258 million).

If approved, this acquisition will be carried out through a Scheme of Arrangement (SOA) under the Australian Corporations Act. A Scheme Meeting is set to take place on June 25. If the transaction is approved, the SOA will be implemented on July 8.

MIXI noted that these dates could change depending on a variety of factors. Additionally, the completion of the SOA would depend on approval by PointsBet’s shareholders and additional regulatory approvals.

MIXI further suggested that it could consider an off-market takeover if the SOA fails to secure the necessary approvals.

The group Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE) has actively urged both New Jersey gubernatorial candidates to take a clear stance on a smoking ban in casinos

The race for New Jersey’s next governor has begun bringing renewed attention to a long-debated issue: should Atlantic City casinos ban indoor smoking? As Democratic nominee Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli emerge as the main candidates, their contrasting opinions on this topic are becoming more important to voters and casino employees alike.

Sherrill Backs Worker Safety in Casino Smoking Dispute

Sherrill stands firm on putting worker safety first. The congresswoman, who won the Democratic nomination, stressed that workers should not have to pick between making money and breathing clean air. She pointed out how common and deadly lung cancer is in the state and linked her backing of a smoking ban to her bigger plan for Atlantic City’s growth. While she has talked about possible compromises, her recent words hint at a shift to a clearer stance.

On the flip side, Ciattarelli, the ex-state lawmaker and current Republican pick, still does not want to force a rule across the state. His team stressed again that casinos and their workers’ unions should make calls about smoking rules. He thinks the market and what workers want should decide if smoking stays on the gaming floors.

The group Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE), which consists of Atlantic City dealers and staff, has been vocal in pushing both candidates to commit. Pete Naccarelli, who has worked as a casino dealer for many years and helped start CEASE, said the group likes Sherrill’s recent comments but wants a total ban without compromises. He spoke against solutions like special smoking areas or better air systems, saying they still put workers at risk from secondhand smoke.

Murphy Could Sign Smoking Ban Bill Before Summer Break as Pressure Mounts

Party polls and lawmaking trends are moving the debate forward. The Democratic Party’s big majority in the state Assembly means a bill to ban indoor smoking at casinos has strong support. If lawmakers vote before their summer break, the bill could reach outgoing Governor Phil Murphy’s desk by month’s end. Murphy has previously said he would sign such a law if passed.

Some experts say banning smoking might hurt Atlantic City’s ability to compete against Pennsylvania casinos, where people can still smoke. A 2021 study predicted possible drops in money made and jobs lost if a ban took effect. However, newer research across the industry hints that the long-term money impacts might not be as bad as once thought.

As the election season kicks off, casino workers are making their stance clear: clean air is not up for debate. They are sending a straightforward message to those running for office: you should not gamble with people’s health.

LeoVegas CEO Gustaff Hagman will be stepping down from the top job, as he is withdrawing from the company, and will relinquish the hot seat in favor of Deputy CEO Mattias Wedar.

Seeing Hagman leave is no easy thing either, as the man is credited with building LeoVegas into the success story it is today and overseeing its international acquisition by MGM International.

Hagman is one of the original co-founders of the brand, along with Robin Ramm-Ericson, with whom they launched the company in 2011, and presided over its rapid growth in the decade to follow.

The patchy regulation before 2019 in their home Sweden prompted the executives to seek and project the LeoVegas Group onto international markets and focus on overseas growth, which they have succeeded in, while also expanding in the Nordics, the United Kingdom, and most recently in the Netherlands.

Hagman has navigated the company through some of its most ambitious and significant milestones, including the expansion under the MGM brand umbrella. He was thankful for the opportunity to pass the baton to Wedar, a trusted company insider who Hagman knew would continue to work in LeoVegas’ best interest.

“When we launched in Sweden in 2012, the industry was in its infancy, and we were sailing in uncharted waters. With a strong team, great commitment, and a fantastic corporate culture, we navigated the course successfully and managed to become one of the leading international players – it is truly impressive,” Hagman wrote.

Gustaf Hagman, LeoVegas CEO

MGM Resorts International also issued laudatory statements, celebrating Hagman’s leadership. Company president Gary Fritz said that Hagman’s leadership was the basis of not just LeoVegas’ success, but also that of BetMGM, the hospitality giant’s digital offshoot.

“Since MGM Resorts’ acquisition of LeoVegas Group three years ago, we have consistently delivered on our established growth strategy, with a strong focus on strategic investments and the establishment of BetMGM as a leading global igaming and sports betting brand,” Fritz added.

LeoVegas’ Success Story Is Still Being Written

BetMGM has been looking to consolidate its presence in global markets, and has leaned in heavily on both sports betting and online casino. Understandably, the iGaming offer has performed the sports betting vertical, although the company has maintained a strong presence in both.

LeoVegas in the meantime has been looking to raise its responsibility standards, staying ahead of the curve and making big regulatory changes. In the United Kingdom, the company introduced deposit limit changes, and the company further joined the European Gaming and Betting Association for cross-border cooperation.

The Philippines Department of Justice has promised to continue its battle against financial crimes including money laundering, terrorism financing and proliferation financing.

On Friday, the European Commission removed the Philippines from its list of markets at high risk for financial crimes.

In a statement, the DOJ said the Philippines has “effectively addressed [its] technical deficiencies on AML/CFT (anti-money laundering/counter-terrorism financing)… aligned with international standards”.

The delisting “is an affirmation of our government’s unyielding stand against money laundering and terrorism financing”, said Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla. “It will serve as a catalyst for the DOJ to further strengthen the rule of law not just within the Philippines, but at a global stage.”

Cleaning its financial house

Earlier this year, the Philippines celebrated its exit from the Financial Action Task Force “grey list” of countries vulnerable to financial crimes.

It was put on the FATF list in 2021 due to money laundering by casino junkets and a lack of prosecution of terrorism-financing cases. It was only removed after completing an 18-point action plan to demonstrate the system’s financial integrity. Among other reforms, authorities vowed to:

Increase investigations and prosecutions of financial crimes;

Apply greater scrutiny to non-financial institutions including casinos;

Use fraud detection technologies to identify financial crimes.

Casinos not covered until 2017

The Philippines passed its Anti-Money Laundering Act in 2001. For many years, however, the law did not apply to gaming, an industry seen as lending itself to financial crimes.

It wasn’t until the passage of the Republic Act 10927 of 2017 that all Philippines casinos – land-based, online and ship-based – were considered “covered persons” under the law.

In recent years the Philippines has been resolute in cracking down on crime associated with gambling. Last July, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr banned Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations, or POGOs, following widespread reports of financial crimes, online scams and human trafficking.

An editorial in the Manila Bulletin said the Philippines “has made tangible progress in aligning with international standards” on AML/CFT. But, it warned, “The delisting from the EU watchlist is a milestone to celebrate – but it is not an endpoint.

“It is a stepping stone toward a more transparent, trusted and inclusive financial system. The country must stay the course and remain agile in confronting new and complex threats. In doing so, the Philippines can earn not just regulatory approval, but also the long-term trust of investors, partners and citizens alike.”

Elaine Wynn’s will has been filed in court, showing who the late billionaire philanthropist named to carry out the document.

Wynn, co-founder of Las Vegas casino giant Wynn Resorts, died in April at age 82. Her last will and testament was filed in Clark County District Court on June 5, records show.

As seen in the 10-page document — signed on May 24, 2016 — she gave all of her estate to a family trust in her name, the beneficiaries of which were not named in the will. She also instructed that if any beneficiary under the will contested its provisions, their share of the estate would be revoked.

Forbes magazine put her net worth at $2 billion.

The will stated that her prior marriage to billionaire former casino developer Steve Wynn had been dissolved — they married twice and divorced twice — and that she had two daughters, Kevyn Wynn and Gillian Wynn.

She named her daughters as well as Andrew Pascal and Robert Kotick as co-executors of her will, or those among the group who are “able and willing” to serve in the role. She gave them power to, among other things, sell assets, borrow money and use estate funds for lawyers and accountants.

Corporate figures

Her nephew Andrew Pascal, a former Wynn Resorts executive, is chairman and CEO of mobile-gaming company PlayStudios.

Robert “Bobby” Kotick is the former chief executive of video-game giant Activision Blizzard, whose games include “Call of Duty” and “Candy Crush.”

Elaine Wynn owned stock in Activision Blizzard before it was acquired by Microsoft, a securities filing shows, and Kotick has said that Steve Wynn invested in a software company he was running when he was still in college.

Moreover, Elaine Wynn was co-chair of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Kotick is a longtime board member of the museum.

District Court records indicate that law firm McDonald Carano filed her will in court. The firm did not respond to a request for comment.

Efforts to reach Wynn’s daughters, Pascal and Kotick were unsuccessful as well.

Las Vegas impact

Wynn, who launched Wynn Resorts in 2002 with her then-husband, owned about 9 percent of the company’s stock as of March, making her the third-largest shareholder, according to a securities filing.

She died on April 14 after a short illness at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by loved ones, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

All told, she left a big footprint on the Las Vegas Strip and amassed a fortune from the casino industry, as her rise to power and wealth paralleled that of her former husband.

She also was well-known for her philanthropic efforts in Las Vegas, especially in education and the arts.

The Elaine P. Wynn and Family Foundation reported paying nearly $5.7 million in contributions, gifts and grants in 2023, for instance, federal records show.

This included $1.3 million to student-support group Communities In Schools of Nevada; $700,500 to Nathan Adelson Hospice; $525,000 to Three Square Food Bank; $380,000 to Nevada Ballet Theatre; and around $287,700 to The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

A tragic act of desperation unfolded just outside the Kansas Star Casino Saturday morning when a man fatally shot himself during a live Zoom interview with police. The graphic act not only shocked law enforcement officers but also reignited a decade-and-a-half-old murder mystery tangled in gambling debt, hidden money, and unresolved questions.

The Case Revolved Around an Illegal Gambling Ring

According to a report from local media outlet KWTV-DT, the man, identified as Michael Thomas, an insurance agent from Edmond, was a long-time person of interest in the unsolved 2010 murder of Julie Mitchell, a mother found brutally beaten in her Oklahoma City home. Following up on this old case, the Oklahoma City Police Department had invited Thomas for an online interview.

Julie Mitchell’s death in November 2010 was a shock in and of itself: she was found bludgeoned in her bedroom with her infant daughter in the room but unharmed. The kicker came when detectives unraveled the double life of her husband, Teddy Mitchell, who was running an underground gambling ring. He was subsequently convicted in federal court and spent over two years behind bars.

Police have always believed that gambling was involved in Julie Mitchell’s murder. More than $30,000 in cash, linked to Teddy’s illicit gambling operation, was missing from a safe in her closet. Suspicion immediately fell on individuals in Mitchell’s inner circle, including those who owed him money. One of them was Michael Thomas.

Investigators Were Shocked

Thomas was a habitual gambler and had a complex financial relationship with Mitchell. Although he was never charged, law enforcement deemed him a person of interest with a motive, proximity, and necessary knowledge. Although initial investigations uncovered no definitive evidence, suspicion never fully faded, even after years of silence.

Thomas had agreed to meet virtually with Detective Bryn Carter, the lead investigator on the Mitchell case, along with his attorney, Ed Blau. What began as a typical conversation ended in horror as Thomas took his own life during the interview. Detective Carter had a list of questions prepared for Thomas, hoping to shed some light on the decade-and-a-half-old murder mystery. However, these will now go unanswered.

“Him taking his own life without answering the questions that I needed answered to eliminate him as a person of interest. It speaks volumes that maybe he couldn’t answer those questions.”

Oklahoma City Police Department Detective Bryn Carter

Thomas’s death may have deprived investigators of answers, but it also put the spotlight on the gambling-fueled undercurrents of the Mitchell case. Carter emphasized the file remains open, and authorities are pursuing new leads in light of the weekend’s events. However, it is ironic that someone who lived in the shadow of gambling debt for years chose to take his life next to a casino.

Triple-digit temperatures and a lull in major conventions make June through August a challenging time for casino-hotels.

Las Vegas visitors are getting something this summer that they have not seen in quite some time: a break.

Free parking on the Strip, lower hotel room rates, waived resort fees for locals, stay-and-play packages, enhanced loyalty perks, discounted attractions and massive slot tournaments are among the offers Las Vegas casinos have rolled out recently.

But is the sudden surge in generosity part of the typical summer marketing strategy by an industry trying to lure people into the desert during an unwelcoming time of year, or is it a not-so-subtle response to the growing public perception that Las Vegas casinos have overplayed their hand when it comes to high prices, added costs and extra fees?

Gaming and hospitality experts said it could be a little of both.

Why Las Vegas casinos are sweetening the deal this summer

“The current promotions we see are typical of summer, and they are not necessarily out of the ordinary,” said Amanda Belarmino, an assistant professor at UNLV’s William F. Harrah College of Hospitality. “There are some who would also argue that we have become overpriced as a city (and) perhaps these deals would be better seen as a course correction to attract a wider array of travelers.”

The summer slowdown is nothing new for Las Vegas. Triple-digit temperatures and a lull in major conventions make June through August a challenging stretch.

For Sin City casinos, marketing to value-conscious travelers, especially those from drive-in markets such as Southern California and Arizona, has always been part of the summer playbook.

But this year, there is more at stake than the usual seasonal dip as key tourism indicators, such as gaming revenue and visitation, are trending down.

“There continues to be an ebb and flow in the lower to mid-tier leisure customer market segments, which is a good chunk of your seasonal customer,” said Brendan Bussmann, managing partner at B Global Advisors, a gaming, sports and hospitality consulting firm. “As the consumer’s behavior has changed, Vegas continues to find ways to adapt even in periods of softness.”

Bussmann said broader economic headwinds, including stubborn inflation, flat domestic travel and elevated fuel costs in the region, are making it harder for the average visitor to justify a Vegas getaway.

“We sometimes forget that there continue to be economic challenges and geopolitical forces in the market,” he said. “In the last four years, we’ve gone through two technical recessions and survived the great shutdown (from COVID-19).”

Operators stay quiet, but promotions speak loudly

Casino operators will not publicly say whether what is happening this summer is a correction or standard operating procedure for the summer. The market’s two largest casino operators, MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment, did not respond to a request for comment, nor did representatives for Circa hotel-casino in downtown Las Vegas, which was among the first operators in town to debut a “value” package this year with the return of its $400 All-In Summer promotion.

Virginia Valentine, president and chief executive officer of the Nevada Resort Association, said resort operators are closely watching customer sentiment and adjusting promotions accordingly. She said that many visitors make last-minute decisions and promotions such as the ones being offered can “help motivate” those travelers by “offering a strong value.”

While visitation has dipped in recent months, Valentine said the industry is “optimistic for the fall” when major events, conventions and pro sports return to the calendar.

“Now is a great time to visit Las Vegas,” Valentine said. “Resorts typically offer a variety of deals and promotions during the summer season to help attract guests during the hottest time of the year.”

Efforts to showcase seasonal savings extend beyond the resorts themselves.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the city’s official marketing organization, has a webpage with up-to-date deals, promotions and offers throughout Las Vegas, with nearly every Strip and downtown casino represented. The LVCVA also has a dedicated webpage for locals.

“Las Vegas is an escape that offers unforgettable experiences at every price point,” the LVCVA said. “Our summer campaigns bring that message to life in a fresh and engaging way, combining strategic partnerships with third-party media companies and targeted content across our own channels. Our goal is to drive visitation throughout the summer by highlighting the incredible range of experiences available across the destination. We’re showcasing how visitors can have a value-driven vacation in Las Vegas, whether they are looking to splurge or stick to a budget.”

Hottest Strip perks for the summer

On the Strip, several high-profile resorts have joined the summer value push.

Resorts World Las Vegas is offering free self-parking through Aug. 28, a welcome move for a property in a market where parking fees have become increasingly common.

Fontainebleau, the newest casino on the Strip, revamped its loyalty program earlier this year to offer a more favorable coin-in-to-point-earned rate on slots.

Other Strip operators, such as MGM and Caesars, have launched discounted attraction bundles, loyalty tier bonuses and limited-time hotel pricing to attract leisure travelers during the seasonal dip.

Downtown digs deep for deal-seekers

Downtown Las Vegas casinos, which already appeal to budget-conscious visitors, have leaned even further into value this summer.

Circa is promoting a $400 two-night stay package that includes a $100 dining credit, $100 beverage credit and a daybed reservation at its rooftop pool venue, Stadium Swim. Circa is also hosting Slotapoolza next month, which is billed as the “World’s Largest Slot Party.”

The Plaza is running an all-in $125-per-person-per-night package that includes accommodations, taxes and fees, and extras through late August.

At Downtown Grand, guests receive a 10 percent discount on room rates and no resort fees.

Meanwhile, Four Queens (which also operates Hotel Apache at Binion’s) never misses an opportunity to remind everyone on social media that it never charges resort fees.

Locals can cash in on summer discounts, too

Locals are being courted with steep discounts and extras throughout Las Vegas.

The Strat launched its “Summer of Value” pricing, featuring midweek stays for $49 and weekends for $99 (inclusive of taxes and fees), a $25 dining credit and tower observation deck access.

Sahara Las Vegas is offering the choice of no resort fees or a $50 dining credit for summer stays.

M Resort has slashed rates by 30 percent and waived resort fees, while Virgin Hotels Las Vegas is offering 35 percent off rooms along with free valet and self-parking. At the off-Strip South Point hotel-casino, guests can book a one-night stay for just $105 Sunday through Thursday, or $175 on Fridays and Saturdays until September.
