I need to say something here even though no one might be listening or should I say reading. I am beginning to think that there are certain thoughts that dominate our lives and for me that thought would have to be activism. I don't mean that in the run-of-the-mill way that activists go. I don't think they think anything through at all and a lot of their energies get lost in the rhetoric.

I keep repeating myself, this I have observed and I know how I hate repeating myself. The problem is not in the repetition but rather, where there is nothing new that is synthesized with every repetition. I repeat things because I want to remember them. This might be true of everyone else but some people just don't have anything else in their heads and so they repeat.

There is a better way, I know that and I am slowly getting there. I know that something great is about to happen and this is due to the fact that I have realized there is an order to things and that time is a function that cannot be discounted. I move forward and backwards in time and sometimes I just get lost in the traffic.

Bananas

It is a good thing to do, plant bananas in Cagayan de Oro City where there are good planting materials available. One can get suckers or tissue culture plantlets. Banana suckers are easier to plant and less expensive too although there is an advantage when one plants from tissue culture plantlets. For one thing, all of them would bear fruit at the same time.

Thinking back on the times when I qwas a young man in Cagayan de Oro City and all the activism in my heart, I could not refrain from thinking that my life had been wasted in the pursuit of things which are not really making any impact on today's world. Nothing seems to matter now and the old fire that burned seems irrelevant.

This might be construed as being sad and wasted. I might have lived a stupid life but I am here and there must be some point to this puny existence. I do not see the point and everyone who knows me must think, what a stupid life he has lived. Who cares?

Mind Control

The battle has been joined and I have been taken by surprise. My opponent which is my own mind has taken the upper hand and I am reeling from the ferocity of its attack. It has struck me where I was most vulnerable and I got hit hard. I will be leaving tomorrow and this will give me some respite from the terrible battles that I have been waging with a surrogate which is very powerful. I will at least have a few days rest while I try to recuperate and gather strength and momentum for that which I am planning to do. On the other hand, I have been able to make some money through mylot.com and that is a good thing. When my earnings reach $10 they are going to pay me through my paypal account and that is another good thing. As I said before, the proof of my success in my experiment to change my life is in the amount of money that I am able to make.

Mylot is one way of making money while having fun posting on things you care about.

Some SEO Succcess

I found something very gratifying that caused me to have the enthusiasm to make new posts to my blogs. One of my sites, Cagayan de Oro City recently found itself on page 4 of the Google search machine. I had been trying hard to get it out of oblivion for many, many years and when it seemed to me that I would never succeed in doing this, voila! there is was on page 4.

You might think that page 4 is not too big a deal well, you should try caring enough for a website to want it to be found on the higher pages and you will know what I mean by this. I have tried doing this for Dumaguete and I have had a measure of success there too, another page 4 entry but it has gone back to a dark hole and I don't know if it is ever coming back to light.

One surprise was Cebu which suddenly got a pr1 when all my other sites remained at przero-nada-nothing. One of the things I did was to do some checking with a tool that came my way and I was surprised to find Cagayan de Oro on its pages. Good show!!

Sometimes when I think of those times when my mind was constantly troubled by adolescent angst, I think that I was mostly driven by demons I did not understand. There was a lot I know I needed to do but I did not know how to go about doing them. I needed to be part of the mainstream of life, to straddle the dual teams of wild horses running where they wanted. I was bound to fall and fall I did. I never knew how and why but I was shunted aside by the desire for peace that oblivion brings.

There was a fleeting flirtation with activism but deep inside I knew that I did not identify with the masses that I so loudly protested for. Somehow, I believed that the very masses that I professed to speak for would kill me in an instant of blind ignorance. Such is the power of a mob and the masses could very easily turn into a blind, raging mob for little or no reason at all.

Activism, A Virus?

It can be observed that Activism exhibits the traits of a virus in its ability to be transmitted from one host to another. I guess this characteristic is not really exclusively native to activism but is more the domain of ideas. Activism is the result of an idea taking root in a person's mind and pushing that person to feel unhappy unless he or she is doing something about that idea. Thus, activists might be construed as being the hosts of an idea and the vessel for creating action on that idea. Is this a fair assessment of this thing called activism? If the person is nothing more than a vessel for an infectious idea, then killing the infected person would not really stop the idea which spreads like wildfire through the population.

Idealism

It is all very well to be idealistic when you are young and without real responsibilities, it is completely another matter when you have mouths to feed and bodies to keep warm and shelter. The great modern composer Charles Ives made his living as an insurance executive even though he wrote some really fine music. When asked once why he chose to earn his living that way and not through his music he answered, "When you have a nice wife and nice kids, you wouldn't want them to starve on your dissonances".

In life, there are always compromises to be made. When Charles Ives died, his attic was filled with unpublished music of unparalleled beauty and inventiveness. He was true to his responsibilities as a husband and a father while quietly being true to his music and his art. He could have easily have found fame and fortune as a musician but he succeeded in keeping a fine balance between business and art.

Does Activism Stop At All?

When one is young and unbelievably fresh and impressionable, the unbearable feeling of setting the world right, of doing something to change the world and make it better, gnaws at one's brain and soul and gives one no rest. Couple that with the romanticism of youth, raging and unexpressed hormones and you have a combination which creates fodder for any revolution that may be foisted at the time. This mixture creates revolutionaries and martyrs and it is sheer luck that many survive, for the bullets that hunt them down are all too real and the pain is no longer just located in the mind or in the heart but tear at the skin and penetrate the flesh, drawing real blood and not just the metaphor of endless rhetoric.

Does activism indicate a death wish? Is one's life so untenable, so inexorably hopeless that the only way to suirvive is to mimic the primordial chaos in the hope that what remains when all has been unpended is acceptable to the tortured soul? The contradictions that raged within the soul of Che Guevarra propelled him to transplant the revolution which he and Fidel Castro waged in Cuba even after the old establishment had been toppled. Obviously, he had no taste for administration and cohesion. His soul needed to destroy arterio-sclerotic systems that prevented the flow of fresh ideas into the bloodstream of human society and his very restlessness found peace in his unheralded death in the jungles of Bolivia.

The Internet is a vehicle for thought to travel much like these resources that are also vehicles for carrying one from one place to the other. Enjoy!!!

Third Quarter Storm

I never learned the meaning of the term, "3rd Quarter Storm". It was many, many years after the period described had passed when I first heard the term mentioned in reference to my participation in certain events of the time and somehow, it stuck in my mind as a kind of cool catch-phrase which is now obscure. Maybe some historian will write about it and explain the meaning of the term and how it came to be coined, Or maybe it does not really matter anymore.

I do remember a time of intense activism where people were polarized and the divide could be described much like the generation gap, for you had the old ones on one side and the young ones on the other. The old ones who were wiser and knew of things which we, young and naive then, could never even dream about. They had the 2nd World War to make them realize how precarious and fragile life is and how precious, and how brutal and inhumane human beings can be in times of strife and war. We on the other hand, were young and had little knowledge except the one that nudged at our brains and prodded our consciences regarding the insidious threat which the Marcos dictatorship represented and the nagging feeling we had that Marcos represented something which was all wrong. And for this hint of an idea, we were willing to risk life and limb and dive into the storm with the fatalistic bravado which only the young and inexperienced can have.

It was very easy to draw a line between opposing ideas and call each side Right and Left; much easier to have two instead of three or four or even ten and label everything as Rightist or Leftist eventually leading to the adoption of Capitalism and Communism as the main protagonists in the Human Drama. One had to favor one and oppose the other. It was at this time when I first read George Orwell's 1984 which was a powerful indictment of the Big Brother mentality which Government tended to have. If you were young and outside the System, your life had no meaning if you did not oppose it, never mind that you did not have to work for your living and depended on your parents whose ideas you so vehemently oppose as cock-eyed and reactionary (a term which you did not really understand but it made you sound important when you uttered it).

Things were confusing and the whole world was in turmoil and the thing to do was to take a side and stick with it. This was a dangerous way to live and fence-sitting was somehow vilified as timid and boring and lacking in sex-appeal.

Struggle for freedom

Being in college in 1969 meant being in the midst of history as the most charismatic president in Philippine history cemented his hold on the imaginiation of the Filipino people. Ferdinand E. Marcos was idolized and considered a hero by the generation who survived the Second World War. He was a be-medalled hero of the war against the Japanese Imperialist ambitions and his exploits as a young lieutenant gained for him various medals. There was a dark side to his personal history as he was accused of murdering his father's rival for political power in his province. His subsequent feat of topping the Bar Exams in spite of his pending trial earned for him his acquittal and gave history its first glimpse of the icy nerves that later on brought to the Philippines its first taste of a nebulous article in the Constitution called Martial Law.

Ferdinand Marcos ruled the Philippines simply because he could. He had the intelligence, the audacity, boldness and sharpness of decision-making skills that made mincemeat of the oligarchs that used to rule the Philippine archipelago. His brilliant oratory held his audiences spellbound as he weaved the magic of his vision of a New Society and rendered helpless and impotent his rivals while he built up the military to shore up the hollow presidency that he had created. Shrewdly taking advantage the easily corrupted media and politicians, he created the fiction of invincibility while appearing as a champion of the masses. He was the perfect dictator, beloved and idolized by the masses while secretly going after the wealth and power of the oligarchs.

He ws a sad, old man when he was driven out of his palace, defeated by a gentle, smiling woman who was the widow of his nemesis, Benigno Aquino. He squandered his prestige, power and his chance to be the Father of his Country when he chose instead to be a warlord, a kingpin, a gangster even.

In 1969, he was invincible, and college students all over the country were questioning the amazing power that he had accumulated. They correctly surmised that nothing good was going to come out of such power being concentrated in the hands of a single man. The truth of the matter is that Ferdinand Marcos created the mystique of the military as the only decisive force in Philippine Politics. He led people to believe that this power was beyond opposition. Summary executions, ironically called "salvagings", were the prinipal methods to instill fear and terror in the hearts of would-be oppositionists.

This fiction of Military Supremacy is still held in the deluded minds of the likes of Gringo Honasan who fantasizes of becoming a second Ferdinand Marcos and he is joined by his younger cohorts of the infamous Oakwood Mutiny, who mistakenly believe, in their naivete, that History is on their side. None of these late-blooming, military dictator wannabes have the wide ranging vision of Ferdinant Marcos who played the fears of the American people concerning the Communist threat and capitalized on it to bring him a powerful alliance and prestige in the Internatinal community.

The struggle for freedom still continues as politicians cynically manipulate the Filipino people unmindful of the lessons of history. A genuine leader is needed, not a plastic-fantastic smiling daughter-of-a-past-president whose claim to fame is to be the classmate of Bill Clinton; nor is a movie action hero the character that is needed in these dire times. Shame does not exist in Philippine Politics as having a thick face is the only criteria needed to succeed in this mud-slinging arena.

Long-time comrades

At the residence of Atty. Rufus Rodriguez, former Vice-Governor of the province of Misamis Oriental, former Commissioner of the Philippine Bureau of Immigration and Deportation, old comrades met for the first time since their years together as student activists fighting the Marcos Military Machine. Most of them studied in Xavier University (XU) in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines in the years prior to the declaration of Martial Law, which was Ferdinand E. Marcos's adventure into dictatorship; an adventure lasting twenty years when freedom was trampled on and basic rights abrogated unilaterally by an increasingly-oppressive regime. Though a brilliant man with a sense of personal destiny and largely hailed as a hero and a great leader by the older generation, Marcos had to rely on the military to effect his own ccntinued rule after the end of his terms in office. The taste for power had created a craving for dynastic persistence and he promoted the military to the fore of political life as well as economic life for the first time in the history of the Philippines. Taking over the many large industries, he appointed military officias to positions of prominence and executive control of these sequestered companies.
