I wish the Real world was as easy :)

Adding "Runas" back into Vista and Windows 2008

When testing security in SharePoint/Reporting Services you want to run IE as another user, I run my laptop and VM's on Windos Server 2008, the runas feature has disappeared from this release. But SysInternals has a tool who puts the “Run as different user…” option back into the context menu for applications.

You can download the tool from HERE, (which comes as a ZIP file containing the EXE and a licensing agreement), and run the exe from an “administrator” command window like this…

Shellrunas.exe /reg

Found this tip here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/normbi/archive/2008/04/26/adding-runas-back-into-vista-and-windows-2008.aspx

PerformancePoint KPI's under the hood

While playing with PerformancePoint Monitoring I found some great blog posts that show you how the KPI's in PerformancePoint monitoring are calculated and rollups are influenced:

Scoring Algorithm used in PerformancePoint Scorecards

Lower the total cost of technology is also a very hot topic at the moment and in 2009 CIO’s will look to take steps to make a more efficient technology spend. Some additional areas that are highlighted in the report include:

Modernize the technical infrastructure, as new technologies offer lower cost

Use less energy

Deliver better performance and provide greater capacity

The CIOs surveyed represent more than $138 billion in corporate and public-sector IT spending, encompassing 1,527 enterprises across 48 countries and 30 industries.

For those who work with SQL Server 2008, you probably got this message, when trying to change the columns in some tables, add columns or change nullity conditions. "Save is not permitted"... and something like tables have to be dropped and re-created. The only choice you have is to click cancel, or to choose to save the message to a text file.

The solution i found today is in SQL Books Online, and it is pretty easy:
Tools -> Options -> Designers, and uncheck the option "Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation".

Microsoft Brings Business Intelligence to the Masses With SharePoint

More news about Performance Point from Microsoft. Microsoft has posted a short Q&A with the Senior VP of Office Business Platform Group at Microsoft . The interview gives some insight into the strategy announcement, why Microsoft made this decision, how planning customer will be supported and what the overall benefit to customers will be.

Read it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2009/jan09/01-27KurtDelbeneQA.mspx

While it doesn't shed light on how they are going to replace the proclarity Desktop it clearly states the reason for the big change:

"We frequently sum up our mission as bringing “BI to the masses.” Incorporating Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 features into Office SharePoint Server helps us fulfill that mission and sets us apart from many of the BI vendors that require the purchase of specialized applications. "

Microsoft Business Intelligence strategy update and SharePoint

Ok for those of you who missed it last weekend, MS has changed the Performance Point strategy 180 degrees. From now on. Quote: "As part of this vision, and feedback from a wide variety of customers, PerformancePoint scorecarding and dashboarding capabilities will now become part of SharePoint Enterprise CAL and available to customers who are on SharePoint SA. This means that customers who want to deploy PerformancePoint can do so today at no additional cost. "

http://blogs.msdn.com/bi/archive/2009/01/23/microsoft-bi-strategy-update.aspx

But they sacrifice PPS Planning, it wil not be further developed. I think it’s a smart move, most MS enterprises will have MOSS so they will get instantly acces to All those great Performance management tools.
