New Years Eve is a great time for celebration. A time to spend with family and friends. It also means people aren’t mindful of things going on around them or prepared for the celebrations. New Year’s Eve Safety is often an an after thought or not thought about at all…

Use these safety tips to ensure a SAFE and HAPPY New Year!!!

1)Keep your driveway and walkways clear.

When it snows, or debris flies due to winter storms, keep your sidewalks and driveways clear to avoid any mishaps or injuries. Your guests and delivery people will appreciate it!

2)Arrange for a driver in advance.

Weather it is a friend, family member, cab driver or uber. Planning your ride in advance will ensure that you get home safe and sound.

3)Remember fireworks and pets don’t mix.

If planning on having or attending fireworks it may be best to leave pets at home and in the house. Pets don’t like the sound of fireworks and end up feeling distressed and/or taking off during the celebration.

4)Hosting – Plan for guests to stay or a ride home.

Just like with arranging a ride in advance. Be the host with the most and prepared to have people stay at your place or have an uber or designated driver lined up for those that would rather go home.

5)Be diligent with home security.

Unfortunately, the holiday season sees an increase in break-ins. Therefore, it’s important to always lock your doors, keep the garage closed, lock windows, and make note of strangers in your neighborhood.

Moving is always easier said then done… Let us help to steer you in the right direction… Here is what NOT to do when moving house…

Do not “Wing It”

When you are moving do not just “wing it”. Have a plan in place even if it is a loose one. Having a plan will eliminate wasting time and potentially save you money in the long run. Come up with a moving plan. Plan your movers, date of move, when to pack, what to pack and so. You can click here to download and print a copy of our moving checklists to help you out!

Don’t “Rough It”

When moving do not try to rough it. Expect that you will need to stay somewhere a night or two during your move and unpacking stage. Additionally, pack ALL the essentials you will need for up to a two days. If you try roughing it chances are you will end up exhausted, frustrated and stressed out more than you should be.

Do not spend too much time packing

When moving do not spend too much time packing. A lot of people spend the majority of their time packing. This is due to being sporadic and unfocused in the task at hand. Start with one room at a time and finish each room before moving on to the next. You should start with the rooms and storage areas that see the least use. Next move to the areas of your home that are used the more often. Don’t forget to label your boxes. Another helpful hint: Detail clean as you go. This way you will not have to spend an extra doing this at the end of your move out.

Do not over pack your boxes

This is an often overlooked moving “do not”. Over packing boxes will lead to boxes falling apart and bursting open during a move. As well, this makes your move more time consuming because over packed boxes will require more effort to move. A good rule of thumb when packing: Heavier items in smaller boxes and do not over pack your boxes.

NEVER pack anything valuable into a moving truck

When moving you do not want to pack things like money, jewelry, important documents, and sentimental ornaments. These should be kept with you personally. This will ensure that nothing valuable to you is lost, stolen or broken.

Do no get in the way of your movers when they’re working

Movers work hard and deal with a lot of heavy lifting and physical labor. You don’t want to be a distraction to them as this could cause damage to your property and cause possible injury to your movers.

Do not select a mover based on price alone

The old adage often proves true here, quality over quantity. Plan on meeting your future movers to see what they are all about. Take recommendations and reviews into account when selecting your movers. Though you may pay a little more in the end, quality movers will help to safeguard your valuables and give you peace of mind.

Do not leave fuel in gasoline powered equipment when you move

Never move gasoline powered equipment with fuel in it. This is a huge safety hazard. Spilled gasoline and oil could also cause damage to your belongings or the truck, and damage to the truck could mean paying damages to your movers/moving company.

Do not pack flammable items or perishables in the moving truck

Again, this is safety issue. Additionally, moving flammable items could be considered against the law. Click here for a list of items you should not pack in your moving truck.

Shock Therapy: Short Canadian Horror Films is the upcoming short Canadian horror event presented by CineVic Society of Independent Filmmakers. In its premiere year, Shock Therapy will be illuminating the best of Canadian short horror films, with a focus on the creative, satirical, and psychological.
Shock Therapy will have two screenings. Screening One will showcase a variety of “horror-lite” shorts, ranging from comedic to bizarre and beautiful, and back again! Screening Two features a collection of gritty, shocking, and eye-opening shorts. The one thing that these shorts all have in common is conflict with monsters — both real and psychological.

Creating new and healthy habits will help to increase happiness and create an improved lifestyle. Therefore, as we move into winter, it is safe to assume that, this lifestyle change could help to fight off the winter blues. Certainly coming up with a resolution in the fall is also likely to increase the likelihood that your resolution will carry forward through Christmas and into the New Year.

If you want to create and maintain some of your own fall goals we suggest you try the SMART Goals method. SMART simply stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time Bound.

1)Specific

Make your goal clear and concise. Try to answer the following questions to specify your goal:

What do I want to accomplish?
Secondly, Why is this goal important?
Who is involved?
Where is it located?
Which resources or limits are involved?

2)Measurable

Being able to measure your goals is important as it allows you to track your progress and stay motivated. Measurable goals will address the following:

First, How much?
How many?
Lastly, How will I know when it’s accomplished?

3)Achievable

Make your goal attainable. The more attainable the goal the more successful you will be. To create an attainable goal you should ask and answer the following questions:

How can I accomplish this goal?
How realistic is the goal, based on other contraints, such as financial factors?

4)Relevant

Ensure that the goal matters to you. Goals that matter to you will drive you forward and keep you motivated. If a goal is relevant you will able to answer yes to all of the following questions:

Does it seem worthwhile?
Is this the right time?
Does this match our other efforts/needs?
Am I the right person to reach this goal?
Is it applicable in the current socio-economic environment?

5)Time Bound

This is the dead line to focus upon. This time setting helps to make sure you everyday life and tasks don’t take over your long term goals. A time bound goal will always snswer the following:

When?
Second, What can I do six months from now?
What can I do six weeks from now?
Lastly, What can I do today?

Get back to school ready with these 5 easy steps…

1) Set goals for the school year

Set yourself up with some goals for the upcoming school year. By setting goals you are better able to keep yourself motivated and in check throughout the year. When you set your goals keep in mind they don’t have to be lofty goals, they ccan be as simple as making it to all of your classes and being on time or, getting up early to create extra time in your day. Setting goals are excellent ways to create motivators and mile stone markers. Here’s some ideas about goal setting for students.

2) Readjust your sleep schedule

A week prior to the start of school try to set up your sleep schedule to match that of a regular school week. When you readjust your sleep schedule you are able to limit fatigue and in turn this will help set up your back to school routine.

3) Readjust your routine

This goes hand in hand with your sleep schedule. A week before school starts create a routine that is based around your regular school schedule. Practice getting up at the same time every day and getting ready as if you were actually going to school. You can even make your lunch in the morning for that day or go for coffee when you would normally go to school. Regardless of how you choose readjust your routine, it definitely makes your transition back to school much smoother.

4) Get Organized

While this could mean a multitude of things, getting organized for the school year is an important step. This could as simple as readying your school supplies, books and other necessary items; or preparing for the upcoming year by studying and reviewing old notes and brushing up on what is new in the coming year. Here are a few Pinterest checklist ideas to get you ready.

5) Create Timetable or Calendar

Timetables and calendars are great ways to aid in your organization and keep you on track for a successful school year. With a multitude of choices you can opt for a white board wall calendar, day timer and of course digital calendars that are available all over the internet.
