Last Friday, December 10, 2021, an exploit was publicly released for a critical zero-day vulnerability dubbed “Log4Shell” in the Apache Log4J Java-based logging library. The critical remote code execution vulnerability primarily affects Apache Log4J software library versions 2.0 – 2.14.1. (The 1. x series of Log4J is also vulnerable when the JMS Appender class is being used.)

We want to assure our customers that Adaptiva products are unaffected by this vulnerability, and all versions of our products remain safe to use. While Adaptiva products use Log4J, we do not rely on the affected versions (2.0-2.14.1). We also do not use the affected Log4J JMS Appender class in any of our products nor is the class included in the jar. The Adaptiva client is safe to keep installed and enabled on all your endpoints.

What is Log4J and Log4Shell?

Log4J is broadly used in a variety of consumer and enterprise services, websites, and applications to log security and performance information. An unauthenticated, remote actor could exploit this vulnerability to take control of an affected system. With zero-day disclosures like this, attackers have an advantage while software vendors scramble to develop the fix. If left unpatched, cyberattackers could use the bug to take over computers and servers, potentially putting enterprises at risk.

More information about this CVE can be found here.

What is Adaptiva doing to help?

The Adaptiva endpoint management platform can be a powerful tool for you to detect and remediate endpoints affected by the Log4j vulnerability. Adaptiva is working diligently to equip our Endpoint Health product with a brand new custom health check that will help customers quickly identify files and endpoints that are impacted by the Log4J vulnerability. The new health check will automatically detect and identify endpoints that are vulnerable or have already been affected by the Log4J attack. The new health check package is expected within the next 24 hours.

Adaptiva’s Endpoint Health product automates discovery and remediation of endpoint configuration issues to maintain unprecedented rates of compliance and end-user uptime and satisfaction across your network. Leveraging the Adaptiva Edge platform IT can continuously deliver software, configurations, and patches to endpoints no matter their location whether on the corporate LAN, VPN, or over the public internet.

Please note that while Endpoint Health does have built-in remediations for many endpoint configuration issues, there is not currently a built-in remediation available for this Log4J exploit as it is embedded in so many applications that it would require customized remediations. Endpoint Health does have a powerful no-code authoring capability that you can use to create customized remediations for this exploit.

FAQ

Adaptiva is committed to supporting and ensuring the health of our clients and their networks. Therefore, we have put together the following FAQ to help you understand the impact of Log4J on our environment:

Does Adaptiva use Log4J in any of its products, internal systems, SaaS vendor solutions, or have any open-source dependencies that may use Log4J?

We want to assure our customers that Adaptiva products are unaffected by this vulnerability, and all versions of our products remain safe to use. While Adaptiva products use Log4J, we do not rely on the affected versions (2.0-2.14.1). We also do not use the affected Log4J JMS Appender class in any of our products nor is the class included in the jar.

Using the available known guidance on Log4J versions, are Adaptiva’s systems vulnerable to DDOS, code injection, or both?

No, there is no risk to your clients due to having the Adaptiva client installed. While Adaptiva products use Log4J, we do not rely on the affected versions (2.0-2.14.1). We also do not use the affected Log4J JMS Appender class in any of our products nor is the class included in the jar.

What mitigation steps to contain or minimize the attack surface area has Adaptiva taken since the vulnerabilities were discovered?

Adaptiva is currently testing the latest version (2.17.0) of the Log4J library, which contains the fix for this flaw. Once our test cycle is complete, we will include the updated library in the January 2022 product release cycle. There is no risk to your clients due to having the Adaptiva client installed, and you may upgrade to the new build at your convenience.

Has Adaptiva mitigated the situation per the industry guidance from Apache Foundation and CISA recommendations?

Adaptiva is currently working to upgrade the version of Log4J to the recommended version (2.17.0) from the Apache Foundation. We expect to incorporate it in our next release in January 2022 depending on the test results and integration requirements.

Company Promotes Tom Gibson and Andy McDonald Based on Outstanding Contributions to the Award-Winning Customer Success Team

SEATTLE — July 6, 2021 — Adaptiva, a leading, global provider of endpoint management and security solutions for enterprise customers, today announced two key hires. Former Changepoint Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Sonia Martinez joins Adaptiva as chief marketing officer, while Vern LeBlanc comes to Adaptiva from TINYpulse to lead the information security team. Additionally, Adaptiva announced that it has promoted two vital members of its customer success team: Tom Gibson is now senior director, customer success, and Andy McDonald has been named director, customer success (EMEA).

“Enterprise needs have changed dramatically since the onset of the pandemic, and Adaptiva has led the way forward with game-changing endpoint management and security solutions. With Sonia’s deep expertise in automation and cloud-based services, she is the right fit to drive our marketing efforts forward,” said Deepak Kumar, founder and CEO of Adaptiva. “On top of this, our infrastructure has never been more secure, even amid massive growth, than with Vern in charge of our data centers, digital assets and IP.”

Martinez brings an extensive track record of developing high-performance B2B marketing teams in enterprise and SaaS technology markets. She has worked in both mid-size companies and large enterprises across her marketing career, which spans more than two decades.

Most recently, Martinez served as vice president of worldwide marketing at Changepoint, where she was responsible for rebuilding the company’s go-to-market strategy. She redefined product positioning, messaging and packaging across three disparate organizations including CRM systems and processes. Her work resulted in product leadership positions within Gartner’s Magic Quadrant and the successful acquisition of Changepoint by Planview earlier this year. Martinez has also held senior marketing leadership positions with Avaya, K2, Oracle, Skytap, and UBM Technology.

LeBlanc most recently served as IT manager in charge of IT governance and business at TINYpulse, where he developed a comprehensive information security management system (ISMS) foundation and drove the company’s security certification efforts. He was instrumental in providing the strategic security framework tailored to meet the company’s regulatory compliance needs. He was also responsible for protecting TINYpulse’s computers, networks and data against threats such as security breaches, viruses and cyberattacks. Additionally, LeBlanc has spent the last 22 years in IT security leadership posts for Alexonet and Bioanalytical Systems.

“Adaptiva has built one of the most innovative and exciting companies in the security space, and the company’s latest products — OneSite Cloud, Endpoint Health and Evolve VM — have never been needed more,” said Martinez. “I am thrilled to be part of this talented team.”

In addition, Adaptiva promoted Tom Gibson and Andy McDonald from within to assume greater leadership responsibilities on the customer success team. Gibson, formerly a senior solutions architect at Adaptiva with more than 30 years of IT experience overall, becomes the worldwide leader of customer success, while McDonald, also formerly a senior solutions architect, with more than 15 years of experience at companies including Barclays, HSBC, HFC Bank, and Nestle Waters, is responsible for the customer success team outside of North America. The appointments are notable as Adaptiva’s customer success team has maintained a 100% satisfaction rating from customers for 33 consecutive months for its superior level of service. The team is known for its outstanding product support and rapid response times, returning customer inquiries within an average of just 18 minutes.

“Adaptiva’s success to date is largely attributable to Tom and Andy’s contributions,” noted Kumar. “We can make the best products in the world, but the customer success team is on the front lines, teaching people how to use them and all that they are capable of so that enterprises maximize their investment. Both Tom and Andy have been extraordinary in this regard, and we are delighted to reward their respective work with these well-earned promotions.”

Of the technologies that saw a spike due to the pandemic, cloud-based services are experiencing a bump in enterprise sales. The enterprise previously had been trailing scrappy upstarts in terms of digital transformation, largely because of the complications associated with moving tens of thousands of endpoints into a new environment. With entire workforces shifting to work-from-home environments, though, movement to the cloud has become all but inevitable.

According to IDC, digital transformation in the enterprise has accelerated since the start of the pandemic as enterprises seek greater flexibility and cost efficiency. Yet, enterprise security teams are posing a slew of new questions to cloud vendors about the security of their offerings. Best case scenario, this adds time to an already lengthy buying cycle. Worst case, security practices and protocols can kill a contract.

To be clear, no enterprise wants to be held back from something that might help them innovate faster, easier, and for less money and resources than what they are currently using, but in the current environment, enterprises are not going to take chances with their networks and user data. It’s just not worth it.

Today, a wide range of cloud-based services and applications can be integrated into a company’s IT environment, each with its own issues, vulnerabilities and strengths. It would be impossible to catalog them all, but there are some considerations enterprises should take into account as they seek out cloud vendors who prioritize security.

Established Standards

Industry standards and recommendations exist for a reason: to provide guidance and insight so that companies can build products and services the right way. Yet, standards are essentially the minimum companies should strive to hit. When it comes to building secure cloud-based architecture, vendors need to demonstrate that they’ve taken extra precautions and exceed industry recommendations so that you can feel confident purchasing their services. Take a look at the effort they put into going beyond the basics.

All or Nothing?

Enterprises are not just going to flip a switch and become full-cloud. Migration takes time and planning to do well. For this reason, flexibility is key. Clients may remain on-premises, off-premises over a VPN, or off-premises over the internet, depending on what an enterprise’s needs are and how their employees are set up.

Vendors with a type of cloud relay service as part of their architecture can make such adaptability not only secure but also easy. Clients and servers that belong to the same organization can exchange messages through the relay service, and servers can proactively send messages to their clients to support real-time functionality of tasks like pushing content, running a health check on endpoints, or executing endpoint detection and response (EDR) queries over the internet.

Securing the Flow of Communications

As data flows between systems, communications should also be secured using advanced signing algorithms. In an ideal world, as mentioned previously, certificates would exceed recommendations of HTTPS, SSL and TLS as well as FIPS 240-2 standards. For example, a vendor could use 2048-bit Elliptic Curve DSA certificates with AES256 CBC and SHA512 signing. Trust could be established between the vendor’s and the enterprise’s respective environments once a unique, single-use activation code is generated for users. With the code, the vendor’s server would initiate a secure key exchange protocol with the cloud relay service that ultimately results in an automatic certificate.

Such a design ensures that enterprises don’t need to set up, configure or maintain certificate distribution infrastructures, as all clients get their certificates immediately. Additionally, with a design like this, human involvement, and therefore errors or failures, can also be eliminated. Internet-facing communications would use the same message format and security mechanisms.

This is one setup, but of course there are other options.

In It to Win It

But beyond all of the technical specifications and possibilities, one thing that is vitally important in successfully and securely executing digital transformation is finding a vendor that is also a partner. By this I mean a company that takes the time to understand your unique circumstances, operations, issues and concerns, a company that will work with you and support you and your team well after a contract is signed. This is not always easy to identify within the sales process, which is why it is important to talk with references. In this day and age, it’s not enough to take a vendor’s word for it or to complete a test; you should learn from those who actually use the product or service you are considering.

A true partner has a vested interest in ensuring your enterprise’s success. They also don’t want to skimp on security protocols as that will come back to hurt them in the event of an incident. Look for the vendors that are willing to stand up with you; look for a design that has been battle tested. With the right vendors in place, the move to the cloud can be seamless, enabling you to recognize the benefits you seek.

Adaptiva Academy Provides Enterprise IT Teams With Self-Paced, Online Courses

SEATTLE — June 17, 2021 — Adaptiva, a leading, global provider of endpoint management and security solutions for enterprise customers, today announced the launch of an innovative training option for customers. Created by Adaptiva’s award-winning customer success team, Adaptiva Academy is a completely self-directed online training portal that enables users to learn all there is to know about how to get the most out of Adaptiva products — and do so at their own pace and on their own schedule. Going beyond standard product training, Adaptiva Academy will also offer additional content such as how-to videos, recordings of technical webinars, and “Tech Snacks,” a collection of short videos that address a specific feature, configuration, or key announcement.

Starting today, any Adaptiva user can access Adaptiva Academy courses for free at their convenience. They can complete a full course in an afternoon or work through specific modules as they have time. Each module ends with a quiz to assess knowledge so that users feel confident in moving forward with their training, and any module can be repeated or accessed again at a later date if a user would like to refresh their training. Additionally, Adaptiva Academy provides downloadable content that users can keep at their fingertips for reference.

“Scheduling live training sessions for enterprise teams can be exceptionally difficult for organizations because everyone has their own roles, responsibilities, priorities and deadlines. Many times, training is delayed in order to lock in users only to have half the team cancel because of a last-minute conflict,” said Adaptiva Education Services Manager Chaz Spahn, who spearheaded the new Adaptiva Academy. “We want to take the stress out of training and make it as easy as possible for all of our customers to maximize Adaptiva products from the moment they are integrated. Adaptiva Academy makes it simple for users to get up to speed quickly, and the support team is always available to help or supplement online learning.”

The company estimates that Adaptiva Academy will provide professional product training for 40% more people than the education services team can reach today, making it possible for customers to get up and running faster while enjoying an outstanding, easy-to-navigate user experience. Adaptiva Academy is highly secure and runs on the Skilljar platform.

“Adaptiva Academy is going to greatly help partners quickly come up to speed on the capabilities of their products,” said Graham Brant, partner at OKTiK Group. “We believe it will save us significant training time as we hire more people to work with Adaptiva/OKTiK customers.”

Adaptiva Academy is the latest advancement from the customer success team which has maintained a 100% satisfaction rating from customers for 32 consecutive months for its superior level of service. The team, comprised of senior technical personnel with deep knowledge of Adaptiva products as well as the systems and applications used by its customers, is known for its outstanding product support as well as its rapid response times, returning customer inquiries within an average of just 18 minutes. Because this veteran team understands its customer base so well, Adaptiva Academy courses have been designed with user needs in mind, meticulously addressing common questions.

“Adaptiva’s new online training platform, Adaptiva Academy, enables our customers to quickly familiarize themselves with the software and, in turn, rapidly benefit from Adaptiva’s wealth of features,” said Mervyn Yan, product manager, infrastructure, cloud and security at Blue Turtle. “As proud partners of Adaptiva, our engineers are now also empowered to evolve into Adaptiva subject matter experts and keep their knowledge pertinent.”

To try out the new Adaptiva Academy and experience all that it has to offer, simply log in to the support portal and click on the Academy link.

It’s clear from the recent spate of cyberattacks on government networks, be it the SolarWinds incident or the Russian intelligence breach of the Treasury and Commerce Departments, our adversaries are finding new ways to infiltrate government systems. Once considered impenetrable, the U.S. now lags behind in cyberwarfare.

As Brandon Wales, acting director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, recently explained to lawmakers on the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, “Our adversaries have advanced, they are no longer using the same infrastructure to target us repeatedly.” It is imperative that we adapt our security practices.

One of the approaches under discussion is zero trust.

Zero trust is based on the assumption that everyone, inside or outside the network, could be a threat. It is the strategy of skeptics, which in the field of security, pays significant dividends.

In the current climate though, zero trust has become a bit of a buzzword. It’s important to examine how the term is being deployed and what the connotations are. While the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence provide specific definitions of what’s considered zero trust architecture, the basic idea calls for a single authenticated source of user identity combined with additional context, like policy compliance.

Practically speaking, zero trust involves adopting very granular, rigid user identification policies, strict authentication, role-based access, time and/or location access, and a host of other conditions that define when, where and how employees can access systems and digital assets. Data and resources are segmented down to the personal level. There is a new level of control so that any threat, even an internal one, can be contained.

How zero trust differs from previous approaches

Zero trust is a far cry from the guiding security principles that have been in place for decades. Frederick the Great once said, “He who defends everything, defends nothing.” This maxim led to a perimeter-based approach, where defenses were erected to safeguard what was inside the perimeter walls, protecting the network from any external threat.

That approach works great as long as agencies can absolutely guarantee that no threat can sneak in -- and that they have no bad actors within their organization. This is simply no longer a reality. Bad actors, foreign and domestic, are finding ways to pass through perimeter defenses -- maybe through a bug that wasn’t fixed, a patch that wasn’t installed or a system that was outdated or misconfigured. Once inside the perimeter, adversaries can explore systems undetected, often for months or even years, stealing secrets, wreaking havoc, spying … the list goes on.

Plus, with so many government employees working remotely during the pandemic, perimeter walls have gotten fuzzy and massively complex. Employees no longer have ready access to their IT departments, nor do they benefit from their usual protections. As such, threats have escalated in number and potential danger. Intruders see big opportunities from even the slightest slip.

Zero trust is the paranoid response. It is the “know the secret knock, show two pieces of ID, use the code word and the special handshake to gain access to specific resources” cousin of perimeter security -- and it is perpetually in force, questioning everything and everyone. This occurs concurrently with security and system hygiene applications running in the background.

It’s not that simple

From this perspective, zero-trust technologies seem to be exactly what the U.S. government needs to protect its most sensitive data and operations. But is anything really ever that easy? Agencies don’t just flip a switch to turn on a zero-trust environment; it requires a major commitment and ongoing administration. Access and privileges are constantly changing and need incessant monitoring. Policies often must be altered to cut off access immediately. It’s an intensive effort.

It can also sink productivity if agencies attempt to implement zero trust at the highest scale. If they don’t though, they might wind up with a piecemeal approach that still contains gaps -- even tiny ones -- that could expose vulnerabilities.

That said, zero trust has been years in the making, only drawing attention now as the associated technologies mature. It is well designed for today’s world. It requires enormous planning to implement effectively and will require constant tweaking, but it has to start somewhere.

To move to zero trust, first and foremost, agencies should expect legacy systems to remain in place for a while, which means they won’t be wasting existing investments. Then, agencies should review their most sensitive data and workflows to determine what needs greater protection and where they should limit access or manage sessions, starting with classified documents that should require multifactor authentication, privileged access or session management. Everything else can continue under perimeter control until it makes sense to make additional changes. Zero trust can be rolled out gradually.

No zero trust strategy is perfect, and each deployment will evolve as needs are assessed. If an agency enters into zero trust with the right resources and expectations in place, however, it will go a long way to protecting government’s most sensitive assets from assault and exploitation.

Latest Features and Health Checks Empower Enterprises To Quickly Identify and Resolve Issues with Ease, Without Impacting the Network

SEATTLE — May 25, 2021 — Adaptiva, a leading, global provider of endpoint management and security solutions for enterprise customers, today announced the release of a new version of Endpoint Health, the fastest, most scalable solution to assess and remediate endpoint health. With this launch, Adaptiva not only adds new capabilities and health checks to its popular Endpoint Health product, but it also extends health checks and remediation capabilities to remote endpoints that are disconnected from the corporate network. This ensures that all endpoints remain compliant and properly configured at all times, addressing the hybrid “work from anywhere” environments that are the new post-COVID-19 norm. The latest version of Endpoint Health is now available as a free upgrade to existing customers.

“The pandemic has fundamentally altered how enterprise employees work, and endpoint management has suffered as a result, which puts corporate networks at risk,” said Deepak Kumar, founder and CEO of Adaptiva. “We fixed this problem by ensuring that any machine or device an employee uses can stay compliant and secure regardless of their environment. Adaptiva provides health checks and remediations at massive speed and scale without impacting the network, ensuring that business traffic is unaffected and endpoints continue to run at peak performance. All that’s needed is an internet connection.”

The latest version of Endpoint Health arrives as leading enterprises increasingly shift to cloud-based services due to benefits like greater flexibility, lower costs, and the ability to modernize their endpoint management systems. Endpoint Health uniquely offers complete visibility into all endpoints in real time while continuing to leverage Adaptiva’s peer-to-peer architecture for the industry’s fastest and most effective remediation experience. Endpoint Health proactively detects and fixes issues as they arise to ensure an enterprise’s estate always stays healthy, and it lets IT teams achieve extraordinary results with unlimited custom health checks and remediation capabilities. Endpoint Health’s functionality is vital today, with many organizations lacking insight into what’s really going on with all of their endpoints.

According to Gartner, “Gartner is seeing a resurgence in the desire to automatically identify and remedy endpoint problems.” Additionally, Gartner considers a strategic assumption in this report that “By 2024, endpoint analytics and automation will help digital workplace service staff shift 30% of time spent on endpoint support and repair to continuous engineering.”[i]

In fact, in a recent case study with one of the world’s largest retailers, Adaptiva found that 55% of devices failed Endpoint Health checks. Among these, 89% had issues that were successfully resolved automatically using Adaptiva’s product.

The new version of Endpoint Health is even more impressive, with a number of new features and capabilities. These include:

Support for Work From Home: At a time when employees all over the globe are working remotely, Adaptiva’s innovative technology ensures that health checks are securely delivered to each endpoint, no matter how users connect, whether they’re on a VPN or not, or where they are. Health checks are deployed at massive speed and scale without impacting network performance so that enterprises can keep their machines and devices well maintained at all times.

New User Interface: With this release, Adaptiva completely overhauled its user experience. The highly intuitive and user-friendly design also makes it remarkably simple and efficient for IT administrators to run dynamic health checks all within the same editor and without the need to manually create policies.

Embedded Dashboards: Through sleek new dashboards, Endpoint Health offers a substantially improved reporting system and provides complete and instant visibility into the health, security and compliance of all endpoints across enterprises of any size. In addition to monitoring the overall environment, users gain the ability to monitor machines by categories, such as by group or location. Providing these highly specific, easily readable views enables IT admins to closely monitor tasks. The dashboards also save time by delivering a clear, up-to-date picture of the environment and when or where they should take action.

Additional Health Checks: Adaptiva is known for taking customer feedback into account with each product development cycle. With this release, many new health checks with pre-remediation have been introduced to help enterprises address specific needs. For example, Adaptiva added health checks to user account running services, data execution prevention (DEP) policy, ConfigMgr client actions, and more.

“Endpoint health is essential in today’s climate, where IT teams face increasing workloads and pressing challenges each day,” added Kumar. “We are committed to creating the world’s most trusted endpoint management and security products to make the job of IT professionals easier and corporate networks safer and more efficient. Endpoint Health and all of the product’s new capabilities certainly advance this directive.”

During the recent RSA Conference 2021, Endpoint Health was named a Global InfoSec Awards winner in the Endpoint Security Next-Gen category.
