If he had been British, he would have most likely been known as Sir Steve Jobs or Lord Jobs. Steve Jobs, however, was as American as Apple. This week, millions of loyal fans paid their respects to the charismatic icon and former Apple CEO. Some of the most appropriate tributes compare Jobs to the most impactful American revolutionary thinkers and businessmen that helped shaped the US of A. Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Andrew Carnegie are just a few characters of another time that Steve Jobs now shares a stage with. Jobs was a truly transformational leader who single handedly made modern times more modern and little bit easier for all. Here are three important lessons that we can take from the actions of a legend.

1. Design for humans without compromising aesthetics.
Time and time again, Apple changed the category it entered by combining style and ease of use. Apple didn’t make the first computer, mp3 player, smartphone, or tablet. Arguably they don’t even make the best versions of these products if you judge them based on superlatives. There will always be something faster, with more features, made with more exotic materials or at better price points. Apple made “dense” products that packed more design, usability and simplicity into every inch than any competitor. This formula created products with a gravitational force that pulls people in, makes them forget how technically brilliant the products are, and helps them focus on how life just got a little better. The form and function ballet is a difficult thing to execute, but Steve Jobs has been a consistent performer.

2. If you want to sell more, don’t make more products, create markets.
The iPod changed music, but without iTunes, Apple would not have been as successful. iPods were fashionable little stores in your pocket. They made buying digital music easier than stealing it, which was a huge accomplishment at the time. The opening of the App Store followed the introduction of the iPhone. Again, Apple created another intuitive marketplace with no competitors in sight. The Mac App Store is the marketplace for their computers and the iCloud will be the storage marketplace for all devices. Each one of these markets are as important as their storefronts, which we all know better as Apple products. Apple not only creates markets, they bring them closer to you.

3. Never forget the importance of good storytelling.
This lesson doesn’t come from Apple. It comes from Pixar, the little computer graphics company that Steve Jobs bought from Lucasfilm for about $10 million dollars in 1986. While at Pixar, Jobs helped shift the direction of the company from one that creates animation that attempt to mimic life to one that uses moving images to tell stories. In the 90’s Pixar teamed up with Disney, who’s been known to tell a good story or two. Since it’s first blockbuster, Toy Story, in 1995, Pixar has made 12 feature films. In 2006, Pixar was sold to Disney for $7.4 billion dollars. Now that’s a story worth telling.

I’m sure there are more lessons we can extract from the life of Steve Jobs. I can think of at least six as I type away on my Macbook Air, but I just checked the time on my iPhone and I have to get going to work now. Thanks for the lessons Mr. Jobs, but more importantly thank you for making life just a tad more enjoyable. The world will miss you.

Scenes of looting and overwhelmed riot police have dominated the endless news loop. The talking heads on television don’t seem to know what to make of the chaos. There’s no consensus as to what the source of the problem is. People viewing the problem with a socioeconomic lens blame the austerity measures, some see racial undertones, while other misguided individuals blame social media. There are many ways to view the current state of unrest, but blaming social media is a bit far fetched. It’s the equivalent of baseball bat for breaking a window. A bat alone will not break anything. In the same sense, social networks are merely tools that we use to communicate in real time. What people choose to communicate is up to them. Social media as a channel is neutral and can be used for good, evil or annoyance in some cases.

The Internet and social networks are guilty of enhancing the ability and speed of one of the most fundamental human traits, the desire to socialize. Since the beginning of civilization, people have come together to discuss anything and everything. A word-of-mouth recommendation from a trusted source is still one of the most effective drivers of commerce today. The main difference between now and 2000 years ago is that a physical presence is no longer required to share information or to gather around an idea. Before media, the fastest way to spread information to a large group was to unite them into a single location and to provide them with information that they can pass on to others. You can imagine how some messages may have lost momentum or become warped beyond recognition. Today messages are repeated more frequently across vast distances, but that doesn’t mean they’re immune from the issues of the past.

Welcome to the hyper-connected world. A world where people and ideas can all be interconnected at lightning speed. You don’t even need to be digitally connected to be a part of zeitgeist. There’s a good chance that relevant information will find you through someone nearby who ‘s linked in. People gather for and against ideas, but thanks to social media, they can unite in real time using nothing more than a connected device or knowing someone with one. Living in hyper-connected times means that we must rethink the concept of community to include flash unions that form and break up dozens of times per day. The police in London describe their policing style as community policing, but physical communities are only part of the equation. There is a clear line between gaining a better understanding of what’s happening in the digital space and imposing a full big brother crackdown on social media as has been suggested. We can’t expect Blackberry to shut its messenger service because you don’t like what’s being said.

There is some good news for the battered city. Police are learning from how these events materialize. They are starting to understand the language of flash unions and they are able to track what’s being said publicly. Blackberry’s BBM, a private communication channel for users of their devices, is more difficult to track. Blackberry is cooperating with police to track and trace crime related messages. There are two sides to every coin. So if you want to blame social media, you can. Just be sure to give it credit when something positive happens as well. People used social networks to unite in the name of anger and chaos, but today others used social channels to aid the cleanup effort. Time will tell which of these movements last longer. Both the rioters with balaclavas and the anti-rioters with brooms have gathered around polarizing ideas. But I wouldn’t be surprised if a select few rallied around anarchy in private and order in public. In our dynamic hyper-connect world you can use social media to be a part of any community, social, anti-social, or both.

Here are a few lessons learned from a few days of madness:

1. Social Media is a communications tool that makes it easier and faster to communicate (anything).

2. Don’t blame the tool for the actions of the user. We must be careful and cautious when using social media professionally because there’s always an element of unpredictability when communicating through a shared medium.

3. Communities are dynamic unions of people that are only as strong the idea that they are centered around. Strong communities can be real, virtual or any combination of both. Nurtured communities thrive on and offline.

4. Don’t overreact. We’re all still learning and getting better at communicating and listening online. Take the time to learn more about what’s really happening before making rushed decisions.

5. With great power comes great responsibility. A tool for one is a weapon for another.

(This post first appeared on WCG Common Sense Blog)

The term encapsulates the current state of multi-channel communications that is common among many people in the world. It’s used instead of, call me, text me, email me or Facebook me. Hit Me Up implies… “contact me in the most appropriate way for you at the time.

This type of communication is nothing new, but marketers still have some catching up to do. Managing multi-channel relationships requires an understanding of how consumers move seamlessly across channels. I have to support local Silicon Roundabout companies where I can.&nbsp;</span></span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><span style="color: #ffffff;"><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="border-collapse: separate; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: normal; font-size: 13px;"><img src="http://www.vincentabry.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Unruly-Media.jpg" alt="" /></span>&nbsp;Unruly Media is the global leader for social video distribution and engagement. They work with global agencies and blue-chip brands to get their videos watched and shared across the social web on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, influential blogs, and on mobile and social media applications. Sarah and gang were amazingly supportive and I look forward to collaborating with them again. Perhaps a future meetup will be at their new office?</span>&nbsp;<a href="http://www.unrulymedia.com/" target="_blank" style="color: #88cbfb; text-decoration: none; cursor: pointer;">www.unrulymedia.com</a>.</span><span style="font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; border-collapse: collapse; line-height: 16px;">&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span style="font-family: arial, sans-serif;"><span style="border-collapse: collapse; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">At our first meeting I asked for advice about an idea I had to create a collaboration tool Silicon Roundabout. I got some good feedback. I think I'll try to develop the project further using white label scripts available online. I'll seek more guidance after I've developed a functional proof of concept. The next meetup is looking promising. It's going to take a lot of hard work to keep things going, but I'll keep working and see what happens.&nbsp;</span></span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p></div></div>

On February 8th I'll be talking about 10 ways to suck at social media. I know there are more ways than that to get it wrong, but I'll focus on 10 areas. I will also explore ways to avoid these mistakes. It should be a good laugh.

It's impossible to get it right every time so there will be a bit of a twist built into the presentation. I've received an overwhelming response from people signing up. I've had to close the registration page. The folks at Chinwag have been great at helping to sort out event details. They've also done a good job of promoting it. I can't wait.

It’s a simple app. You simply take a photo, describe the item and put it for sale on whatever site you normally sell you things on. It supports eBay, Craigslist, Facebook or even on the bespoke Mobisella market.

It’s a nice concept in the early stages of development. I met the guys at the Glow Agency who came up with the concept. Dan Johnson and Ben Newton are committed to see their vision become a reality. Their vision is to create a mobile market to sell your things without alienating people who use existing sales/auction sites.

With help from the lads at AgencyMobile (www.agencymobile.co.uk ) the app is now live and available for free in the app store.

I’m currently trying to spread the word about Mobisella to introduce it to the beta audience. With a little hard work and dedication Mobisella could make a dent in the industry. In the meantime, give it a try and help spread the word.

Now the internet is built into smart phones that do everything. Are they phones or computers? Today you might here a dad shout “get off the thing!”

It’s easy to focus on the technological changes that effect us all, but if we take a step back… Nothing has changed. Young people are still social as ever. The only shift is in the methods. So if we focus less on the things and more on the reasons why they are social, we'll get to a better place.

We don't focus on the technology when we warm up food in the microwave. Our motivation is to get the food warm so we can eat it and that is driven by hunger. If you focus too long on the science of wave frequencies, you'll starve. So stop focusing on the tech for a second and you'll make life a lot easier on yourselves and your clients.

Technology will always change, but some things remain the same. Today, a note written in pencil is still a status update, a school is still a social network and a close whisper is still an instant message.

I started blogging in Richmond, Virginia in the US of A. This was before the first black president and before economic the shit storm that has yet to settle, unsettled everything.

Since then, digital and social media has evolved and continue to evolve at an alarming rate. Facebook has taken over, social gaming and check-ins are common among digital newbies. Artist born into this period of hyperconnectivity have grown at an alarming rate. Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga have been seen hundreds of millions of times. Anything before 2008 feels so old school.

It's a different world today. The waves are bigger, faster and shorter. It's easier to drown in the sea of memes and random "I'mma let you finish" moments that last for a week, then end up in the best-of-last-week shows on TV stations that nobody watches. Don't blink, or you may miss something important.

Those of you that know me, know that I have a short attention span, but can hyperfocus when I see something interesting. It's ADD heaven on the interweb, and I'd like to start making some waves of my own. Stay tuned for more...

Absolut Vodka is running an experiential promotion to support the "Hugs" advert that began to air in the UK last week. Iris Experience created events around town where people can pay for things such as coffee or cocktails with acts of kindness. We at iris Digital supported the campaign through online and social media outreach, including the use of Twitter to spread the message. We used the hash tag #kindness to track conversations about the campaign. People were also encouraged to comment on the site itself (http://www.absolutkindness.co.uk).

We've received positive feedback from Londoners as we help spread the #kindness movement. It's been fun thanking people for kind posts and doing little things here and there that make people happy. Ironically, I found a purse earlier this week and I contacted the owner using a business card I found in it. We've also had some of the nicest weather I've seen since I got to the UK. Perhaps if we extend the campaign the weather will do its part.

The FIFA World Cup is coming to town on April 1st and Sony Ericsson are planning a special VIP party. In order to attend the VIP party, football (soccer) fans have to earn their ticket. They will compete to win the ultimate prize by showing their passion! On March 28th in Lakeside shopping center in Essex, 25 selected candidates will press their lips against a trophy structure. The one who can pucker the longest will win a VIP party in London with the actual trophy. They will get some cool SE prizes like a C510 camera phone and a Sony Gigajuke music system.

I've been working with iris Experience, the designers of the competition to promote the event through conversational media. Mainly Facebook and Twitter. It has been an interesting experience managing a campaign of this nature. First I created a Twitter account, www.twitter.com/Kissthecup, a Facebook group and event. I contacted everyone I knew shortly after. Then the real work began. Researching and contacting the right people takes time.

The event is only a few days away and I'm still talking to people about it. The VIP event is really exclusive and I don't even think I'll be able to attend. We did manage to secure a position for an Official Twitter Journalist for the event. This is an ongoing journey that has been fun, but challenging at times. Campaigns that are led by conversations tend to be dynamic by nature and require adjustments as conversations stray off topic. I'm glad Sony Ericsson was open to this type of communications. It is proving to be an excellent case study into the mechanics of engagement. I'll write more about in the near future. So far so good.

Twitter is a tricky little concept to grasp for some folks. Usually until they start using it and find a use for it. The idea that people tweet about what they had for breakfast or other mundane little life events is not really a misconception. It's a small part of a larger truth. In order to get that little piece of information (eggs, toast) you have to subscribe to a person's feed. If you know the person, the information is still useless, but at least you know who said it. If you don't know the person, then why would you follow them? If you get random useless information on twitter it's because you asked for it. You get what you ask for. Following is nothing more than asking to be in someone's loop. If you don't like what they tweet about don't follow. If you don't want people following you, block them or make your information private (invite only).

I'll ask the question again, why would you follow someone you don't know? There are several reasons to do this.

1. If someone posts relevant information about your industry, you'll be in the know. Relevant information will come to you.

2. If you want to expand your network. Follow people whom you would like to network with. People tend to group themselves by mutual interest, twitter is no difference. It's a great way to get you name out and to meet people in your field. Following the right person could land you "the" job. But, it's not all about networking online. Many professional groups have regular offline meet-ups at bars or other places of interest.

You are basically creating and managing your own personal/professional network 140 characters at a time. You filter what comes through, you decide what goes out if anything and everyone else does the whatever they want. Some people don't follow anyone, some follow everyone. Tune in and out as you please. It's as complex as you make it.
