If your property uses gas go ahead and schedule a gas delivery before it gets cold.
Make sure all garden hoses are detached and drained before freezing weather hits.
If freezing weather occurs keep a faucet dripping (slow)...this will prevent pipes from freezing.
To keep utility costs down make sure to keep your thermostat around 68 degrees during waking hours and lower while asleep.
If using a space heater make sure it has a working safety light, alarm, automatic shut-off switch, and a cut-off device to prevent overheating. Keep all objects, people and pets at least three feet away from the space heater. Never use a space heater in your bathroom. Water and electric appliances don't mix.
If your property has a working fireplace don't "over build" your fire using too much paper. You could ignite the soot in your chimney. Never burn charcoal in your fireplace. It gives off deadly carbon monoxide. Keep your damper open if there are hot ashes in your fireplace. Closing the damper could enable hot ashes to heat up and cause a damaging fire. Let ashes cool in a sealed metal container.

Skill Level: Beginner

Making something grow is a gratifying and simple hobby that one can enjoy at any age. If you'd like to give gardening a try, anytime is a good time to start. Here are a few basics for success:

Gardening Basics

Gardeners are one of the largest hobby groups in the world. Gardening can be as simple as a few containers or as complex as a few acres. Regardless of the scale, the same basic rules apply:

1. Realize that gardening is more of a process than a project. Plants take time to grow and along with the plants, you will grow patience. Accept the fact that not everything you attempt is going to look like a magazine cover. Also remember that some of the things you do may be great.

2. Learn about your gardening space. Indoors or out, locate where and when the sun shines. Pay special attention to the soil. Do a soil test to determine what type garden soil you have. Amend it or choose plants suited to it.

3. Learn about yourself. How much time and money do you want to invest? Gardening can be as simple or as elaborate as you want it to be. It's always a good idea to start small, finding more to do is seldom a problem.

4. Learn about plants, especially the ones you like. Whatever plant you chose to grow, from turfgrass to orchids, do some homework. If for some reason the plants you like most aren't recommended for your garden site, keep looking. You're sure to find something you like just as well, maybe even better.

5. Water, fertilize and prune regularly as recommended on the plant tag.

6. Get some good tools. You don't need one of everything to begin with. A spade, rake, trowel and pruners have started many exceptional gardens.

7. Learn to recognize symptoms before they become problems. Pests, diseases and environmental stressors of lawns and houseplants usually start small, giving you time to react and correct them. Knowing the problem allows you to select the right treatment.

8. Ask questions. You shouldn't have any trouble finding experienced gardeners who are more than willing to share advice and opinions.

9. Be safe. Follow product instructions carefully, especially pesticide and fertilizer.

10. Keep a record or journal of what works and what doesn't. Use this information when planning for next season.

11. The plant tag is a good source of information. Sunlight and water requirements, mature size and shape, planting instructions, bloom time, pruning needs and more are all right at your fingertips.

12. Gardening can be strenuous; sore muscles and blisters are often the result of a gardening session. Doing a few basic stretching exercises and investing in a good pair of gloves are worth the time and effort.

13. Perhaps most importantly, although gardening can be hard work, don't forget to have fun.

Distraction scammers use one of the oldest tricks in the book to victimize unsuspecting North Carolinians. While one talks, the other steals.

Law enforcement in Iredell County recently reported a rash of distraction thefts in their area. A pair of scammers, a man and a woman, claimed to offer tree-trimming services. While one of them engaged the homeowner in conversation on the front porch, the other sneaked inside to grab valuable items. The two may have been wearing electronic devices, allowing the inside scammer to monitor the front porch conversation and make a timely escape before the homeowner returned.

Distraction thieves sometimes pose as detectives, government employees, or utility company workers. The “woman in distress” routine is another time-tested variation. It exploits the homeowner’s desire to assist someone who is in pain.

Here’s how to stay focused and keep distraction thieves from victimizing you:

•Demand identification and examine it closely.

•Be skeptical of any stranger who asks to enter your home, and be especially wary if two people try to enter.

•Keep your back door locked so a scammer doesn’t have easy access while you are engaged on your front porch.

•Don’t try to detain someone you’ve discovered inside your home, or offer resistance to a thief who resorts to using force.

If you think you may have been approached by distraction thieves, contact local law enforcement to report it.

Police Caution Motorcycle Owners

Fayetteville Crime Prevention Specialists are warning citizens that motorcycle theft is on the rise in Fayetteville and offer the following safety tips to avoid becoming a victim of motorcycle theft:

· Prevent temptation by keeping your bike covered when not in use, preferably in a garage if possible.

· Use a steering lock, even though these can be easily defeated, they act as your first line of defense.

· Do not keep your lock rested on the ground to allow leverage to destroy the lock and always make sure it is attached through the frame.

· Disc locks will prevent lifting into waiting truck or van. Consider adding a cable and anchor the bike to something strong and solid.

· In addition to the lock that your bike comes with, consider using two additional, different locks. A thief will likely nor be prepared for breaking three total locks...all of which are different.

· Install a kill-switch that must be pressed whenever the start button is depressed. You can even remove your main fuse when your bike is parked.

· Write the numbers of your lock down and store it somewhere safe. Then file the numbers off your lock. Anyone can get a key cut to fit with a number.

· Park in a well-lit area and consider putting an alarm sticker on your bike.

Rain Barrels Conserve Water for Green-Minded Gardeners

Sadly, the average American uses 100 gallons of water per day, and more than 50% of that is for outdoor use.
Watering gardens uses a considerable amount of water. Miami-Dade County in South Florida has water conservation facts that are pretty surprising. Sadly, the average American uses 100 gallons of water per day, and more than 50% of that is for outdoor use.
One inch of rain on a 1,000-square-foot roof will yield around 600 gallons of water. According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the state receives 54 inches of rainfall annually. Most of this rainwater is not harnessed, and it is left to fall off roofs and wash dirt and chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers into sewers, local ponds, rivers and waterways.
In South Florida, the University of Florida’s extension campus is offering rain barrel workshops to aid residents in conserving water and making rain barrel systems in their own back yards. The workshops cost $45 to attend, and the price includes not only the class, but also a rain barrel and a hose bibb. If you don’t want the supplies, you can pay $10 just for the class. There is usually a workshop held once a month at the Coral Gables Farmers Market.
If you can’t afford to attend a class on rain barrels or just don’t have the time, there are other ways to learn to conserve water safely. Bloggers Carol Buie-Jackson and Jay Jackson of North Carolina own the blog Smell Like Dirt, which posts many sustainable gardening, composting and water reuse tips for green-thumbed environmentalists. Carol’s rain barrel video shows gardeners how to convert their rain gutters into water-saving tools.
According to Miami-Dade’s website, it is best to water your outdoor plants in the early morning, between 5 and 8 a.m. If you water your plants when it’s hot and sunny out, a lot of the water you use will evaporate before plants can take it in. The county’s website also has good tips on environmentally friendly landscaping, including reducing storm water runoff, protecting natural waterfronts and water efficiency.
You don’t have to live in Florida to enjoy rain barrel classes and the benefits of collecting your own water. Many other cities offer rain barrel classes. Chicago’s Department of Environment website gives detailed instructions on building rain barrels for environmentally conscious gardening. Chicago Botanic Garden held a rain barrel painting competition in September 2009 for children ages 8 to 18. Lincoln, NE, residents can take a rain barrel class at Southeast Community College for $49 and all supplies are provided. In Santa Fe, NM, if you purchase a rain barrel, you can get a rebate from the government. In Dallas, residents can attend a rain barrel class for $40, which includes the rain barrel supplies.

Pick a Safe Grilling Area

Place your grill on a flat, level surface so it won't tip over. Keep it away from overhangs, fences, deck railings and shrubbery that could be ignited by a sudden flare-up or flying spark.

Position the grill in a well-ventilated location. Never barbecue inside homes, tents, or vehicles. Burning charcoal inside can kill you. It gives off carbon monoxide, which has no odor.

Keep children and pets away from the grill when it's in use.

Handle Charcoal Carefully

Never add lighter fluid directly to hot coals to get a sluggish fire going again. The flame could travel up the stream of fluid and burn you.

If coals are slow to start, place several new briquets in a small metal can and apply lighter fluid following lighter fluid instructions. Add these briquets, using a pair of long-handled tongs, to warm coals and light with a match.

Never use gasoline or kerosene to light a charcoal fire. Both can cause an explosion.

Do not close the lid until you are ready to cook. Doing so might put out the fire or cause a rush of flame when the lid is removed. Closing the lid prematurely also can prevent charcoal lighter fluid from completely burning away, giving foods a strange taste.

Coals are HOT— they can reach up to 1000°F. Use insulated, flame-retardant mitts when cooking or handling any part of the grill. Also, use long-handled barbecue tongs and utensils for safe handling of food and coals.

Smoke the Competition. When smoking meat, pay special attention to controlling internal grill temperature. For an accurate reading, place a candy thermometer's probe through the top grill vent and maintain a temperature of about 225 to 250°F. If the temperature rises above this range, slide the vent directly under the charcoal nearly closed while wearing heat-protective gloves. Continue to monitor the heat and open the vent again as the temperature drops.

Putting Out the Fire

Place the cover on the grill, close the vents and allow the coals to burn out completely. Let the ashes cool for at least 48 hours and then dispose of them in a non-combustible container.

If you must dispose of coals before they've completely cooled, remove them individually with long-handled tongs and carefully bury them in a can of sand or in a bucket of water. Never pour the hot coals into a pail of water, or vice versa. Steam from the briquets may burn you.

Storing Coals

Store briquets in a cool, dry area of the basement or garage. When charcoal absorbs moisture, it can be hard to light.

For instant-lighting charcoal, keep bag tightly closed to prevent lighter fluid from evaporating.

3. Wrap a length of jute twine (#66510) around the rim of the planter and through the tag. Tie a knot to secure.

7 Easy Changes You Can Make to Live a More Eco-Friendly Life

Every day there are simple things we can do to be a little greener. Below is a list of just seven such things.

Write your shopping list on the notes feature of your cell phone or PDA rather than using another piece of paper that you will inevitably throw away.

Stop using plastic bags. Buy some cloth sacks for carrying everything from groceries to your latest and greatest pair of jeans from the department store. If you must have plastic be sure to return the bags to the store – most retailers offer recycling bins on site.

Combine your errands. If you take some time to plan it out you can run to the store, drop off library books or a bill payment, and get gas all in one session – this will save on fuel consumption and exhaust fumes.

When getting food to go from your favorite restaurant ditch the Styrofoam. Most restaurants will use a substitute if you ask or will accept your container if you offer it up front.
Save on paper, envelopes, and stamps – bank online. These days you can pay pretty much every bill you have online. You can also transfer funds, check balances on accounts, and so much more – talk to your banker about it today!

Rather than using disposable wipes start using old towels or t-shirts for cleaning. You can wash them when they get grubby and use them again.

Look for labels when shopping that let you know what you are buying is recycled or in a recycled container. If more consumers begin demanding such things (and only buying items with these labels sends a clear signal of demand) more manufacturers will make them available.

Living greener is easier than you think – one small step can make such a great impact. What are you waiting for?
