How does that affect the child's development in the present, near future and as adults? The fighting parties may not be cognizant of the child's emotional traumas.

Here is a typical scenario and the potential solutions.

Jon is a 8 year old going through a divorce. He is on Concerta Monday through Friday with the weekends off. Ritalin is use for breakthrough task management when mother feels he is out of control and acting cranky.

Since the parents are separated living in separate households, mother takes care of Jon's weekdays, while father has him weekends.

Mother wants medication. Father don't want medication. Mother has custody responsibility, while father has no legal custody over medication issues.

How would be best handle the situation?

First, continue with medication so as to be sure Jon completes school work on a timely manner. Anything assistance and encouragement to help Jon complete school work increases his self-esteem and confidence to tackle larger projects in the future.

The behavioral issues from no medication will have to be monitored closely and redirected to better suited to societal parameters. If he is misbehaving, there must be clear negative reinforcements. These may include not allowing to the Saturday movies, no sport participation, being "grounded", etc. until the behavior is understood and corrective measures implemented. Ask Jon what would be the punishment to fit the "crime." Jon will tell you. Stick with his suggestions.

Second, what if the father doesn't want medication for Jon. How are we going to address that delicate issue? What are the alternatives to pharmaceutical medications?

A channel of communications must be established between mother and father. Both must set aside their ego and personal agenda so that medicate or not medicate would be address collectively. Easier said than done! It is a tough job to communicate with the other spouse when so much anger, frustration and emotions are at the surface.

There are many avenues to non pharmaceutical approach. However, it is labor intensive for all involved parties. Furthermore, it takes much commitment to make it work. I will illustrate them for you in a systematic way.

Once you decide the non-medical technique, you substitute other non-traditional allopathic mainstream medical approaches.

(1) Add daily supplements to the diet. These include Vitamins, antioxidants, trace minerals, omega-3 fatty acid supplements,

(2) Detoxify the physiology to enhance absorption.

(3) Change eating habits and avoid "fast foods".

(4) Behavior modification consistently to change some the bad habits to good habits. Both parents and Jon must perform this. If done this way, there is synery. If not, it is counter productive.

There are still other ways to deal with this situation.

Next week I will go into details each of the above components with links for further explanation.

Diabetes and ADD/ADHD part 5 of 5 (Body Symbology - Changes On A Personal Level)

This is the final post of theDiabetes and ADD/ADHD series. I will discuss some of the traditional management protocols of hypoglycemic agents, insulin, and other non-pharmaceutical intervention/supplements.

Hypoglycemic agents are divided in classess. They are
(I am out of town and will complete this section within the next few days when I return home. Sorry about the delay)

The purpose of hypoglycemic agents is to enhance the pancreas to secrete insulin.
(I will post them when I return home.)

Insulin is divided into animal extraction insuling or synthetic insulin. Either version is effective. In today’s formularies, the predominant insulin is recombinant variety (i.e. synthetic). In other countries, the bovine (beef) and pig extract insulin may be more prevalent. It’s not a matter which is better, it’s a matter of what form of insulin will your body assimilate effectively.

There are varies supplements available that’s are hypoglycemic agents. This means that the herbal supplements help bring down blood sugar level. Level 90 and _____ are supplements capable to longer blood sugar. One of theingredient is chromium picolinate.

These help transfer the glucose molecule from the blood side into the cellular side where glucose molecules can be utilized to manufacture energy in the forlm of ATP (Adenosine TriPhosphate) in the mitochondria. The more effective the glucose transfer into the cellular side, the better the balance of blood glucose level. Therefore, a better controlled and healthier diabetic.

Symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, “blah” feelings, anxiousness, poor appetite or feelings of hunger, anger related issues, "panic attacks", etc. are associated with poorly maintain blood glucose level. Here is a short review. The beta cells of the pancreas produces insulin. When there is infecetion (viral, bacteria, secondary to trauma, etc), physical injury, blood related injury (anoxia), chemical, environmental, iatrogenic (injury caused by health professions such as doctors' "oops"...), secondary to metastatic disease (such as cancer spreading to the pancreas) and idiopathic (i.e. "we just don't know...).

The degree of injury, infection, or from metastic cancer causes the beta cells of the pancreas to function at certain capacity. That capacity determines what course of management is appropriate.

If the injury is mild and the beta cells can produce sufficient insulin to marginally maintain adequate control of blood glucose, then insulin is not needed. Maybe diet and exercise is sufficient.

When the injury is a little more severe, pharmacological agents may be necessary. Usually hypoglycemic agents are tried first. If not able to control blood sugar, a combination of hypoglycemic agent and insulin is necessary.

If more severe, insulin is the main pharmacologic agent used to control blood sugar.

With more advancing technology, an insulin pump may be suitable for certain patients. This is essentially a minature computer hook up to a person's body to constantly monitoring the blood sugar, If the blood sugar is high, a "shot" of insulin is injected to balance out the excess blood sugar.

The pathology is very simplistic for my readers. However, in future postings, I will go into more details for those who wish to learn more of the technical aspect of the pathology of diabetes.

The next posting will discuss some of the treatment plans (pharmacological and a little about non-pharmacological) for diabetes. It is prevalent in industrialized society such as our and less common is less developed countries.

Here’s an overview of what to expect in the next five weeks. We start off with an understanding of normal physiology. The normal physiology overtime with uncontrolled blood sugar becomes pathology of diabetes. It is the pathology of the disease that’s relevant to the ADD/ADHD person.

The triad of the ADD/ADHD symptoms includes the ease of distractibility, impulsivity, and restlessness/hyperactivity that contribute to the difficulty in proper management of the ADD/ADHD diabetics.

After the clinical discovery of diabetes, the person would need to make life-changing habits to modulate the clinical course of diabetes. This includes non-pharmacological and pharmacological intervention. In addition, modification of diet will be necessary to maintain a reasonable blood glucose level. Furthermore, herbal non-pharmacological supplements are recommended as the initial trial.

If resistant, then pharmacological intervention is suggested. This could be hypoglycemic agents or insulin.

Lastly, the final posting will be body symbology of diabetes. What is the symbolic meaning of having diabetes? How can one change one’s (subconscious and conscious) behavior to improve the disease?

I will address those issues in subsequent postings.

So, let’s begin part one, normal physiology. The beta cells of the pancrease produce insulin. The alpha cell of the pancreas has an antagonistic function to the beta cells, that is, it produces glucagons, which acts just the opposite of beta cells. Glucagon breaks down glycogen stored in the liver cells when the body needs glucose as fuel.

The pancreatic beta cells produce insulin in response to elevated blood glucose level. This occurs usually after a meal. The insulin is necessary for active transport within the membrane of the cells to transport glucose from the outside into the inside of the cells where it is the energy source.

Once inside the cell, the glucose molecule goes into the Krebs cycle to generate ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate) within the mitochondria of the cell. This is where the majority of cellular energy is produce.

Within the Krebs cycle are important biochemical reactions whereby vitamins such as folic acid, B-12, vitamin C, etc are necessary for the biochemical process to move forward. Without these vitamins, the breakdown of glucose into energy is hindered. Therefore, it is quite important to have enough of the appropriate vitamins to make the biochemical process go smoothly.

there's more to come...

Quench your thirst with a smoothie for the ADD/ADHD body

Quench your thirst with a smoothie is the final segment for this month on fluid replacement. The ADD/ADHD person may be more sensitive to dehydration than "normal" physiology. Therefore, it is necessary to enjoy what you drink and maximized your daily fluid that will promote optimal health.

As a side note, next week is the fifth Tuesday of the month, and I will start my series on diabetes mellitus, a body symbology. The series will cover definitions, common notions, treatments, pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical management, and finish with body symbology of what diabetes represents. So stay tune next week for a cerebral tantalizing interpretation of a very prevalent disease.

Eight glasses of water a day is the common consensus that I have shared with you previously this month. I’ve mentioned some creative ways to substitute the eight glasses of water such as in soup, juices, and fruits. In addition, be sure to take adequate minerals with your water.

The reason for writing about smoothie is because next week is Memorial Day. It signifies the beginning of summer. With the beginning of summer, there will be an abundance of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetable available at extremely reasonable prices.

Plan your day by incorporating a smoothie in your diet. This could be a breakfast drink, a mid-morning snack, or afternoon refresher snack. Use your imagination to make your smoothie personal favorite by using the fruits you like as the ingredient. Add protein powder, supplement powders, or any soy product that are compatible with your taste.

Place in the blender a glass full of ice cube. Add summer fruits of your choice. The fruit ingredients could be strawberry, pineapple, peeled orange segments, ripe banana, apples, melons, etc. You may add juice to the mixture. Blend together the fruits and ice until it becomes a slushy consistency. Add protein powder to taste if so desire.

Experiment with the ratio and combination of ingredients until you are satisfy with your concoction. This is what you’ll be drinking throughout the day at the office, fieldwork, or at home. Anticipate the slush separating out over time during the hot summer days. Therefore, have an ice chest for storage when your job is fieldwork. If in the office with a freezer/refrigerator, place your smoothie in the freezer for a short time followed by relocating it to the refrigerator section so you won’t have a frozen smoothie. Frozen smoothie is tough to drink!

If you make a large batch, you could divide it up and freeze it in the freezer for future use. This is very convenient for the person on the go. Just take out the frozen smoothie and place it in the blender with your favorite juice and blenderize. You’ve got yourself a quick smoothie when you come home from work on a hot August night!

This is intended to be a fun exercise to get you to enjoy the fluid replacement and receive the added benefits of the antioxidants, nutrients, and vitamins present in fresh fruits. After the abundance of seasonal summer fruits have weaned, I suggest continue with antioxidant supplements such as OPC3 in your daily routine for better health.

There are other antioxidants for your choosing. One kind of oxidant is Isotonix Antioxidant. Another similar oxidant is ORAC.

If you are an ADD/ADHD person who smokes or live in the large city with compromise air quality, Oxygen Plus may be needed to help the sensitive ADD/ADHD system to help protect our body from free radicals that can cause damage to your cells, impairing the immune system and leading to various degenerative disease.

Whatever works for your unique ADD/ADHD physiology by trial and error is something you should stick with. Vary the ingredients and amount of fluid according to your physiological workload.

Remember, next week I will start the series on diabetes mellitus. So, please stay tune. This is not a hard and fast set of rules. It is merely a guideline.

What are suggested are eight (equivalent) portions of water in a typical day. My recommendation is to substitute and incorporate your diet intake into consideration as part of your daily eight water portions.

In the summer time, eat citrus fruits and count them as one-half to three-quarter portion or one full portion depending on the size of the citrus fruit.

The summer season fruits could be counted toward your daily eight. Examples are peaches, nectarines, cherries, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and various fruits and vegetables are possible substitutes. Watermelon, cantaloupe, and various seasonal melons are a good choice to eat on a daily basis. The more you eat, the less water you need to drink.

Fresh vegetables are plentiful in the summertime. Celery stick, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, salads, etc. are most beneficial in supplying the daily 8 portions.

In the wintertime, hot soups could count toward the eight portions. Have as many cup of soups throughout the day as possible to reach your eight portions. Hot chocolate, hot (green) tea, egg nog, apple cider, etc are other favorites.

For winter meal preparation, I suggest incorporating more soup in your menu. It is easy, nutritious, and inexpensive to prepare. Plus, you’ll arrive at your daily fluid goal without having to drink any water.

Here is a quick one paragraph on making soup. Beef soup. Buy beef shank with bones and ask your butcher for soup bones to make broth. Pick up carrots, celery, onion, potatoes, squash of your choice, and whatever vegetable you like.

In a large pot, place the bones in water and let it boil. When the water boils, skimmed off the fat from the top and toss away. Add water if necessary to be sure bone is submerged. Boil for 2-3 hours, then add carrots first, then onion, celery, and then potatoes. Consider adding brocoli and cauliflower. Lastly, add your squash and tomatoes. The reason for this sequence is to avoid your vegetable soup looking like mush.

When the vegetables are firm, turn off the fire. The retained heat in the water will continue to cook the vegetable. To add a little flavor, season with salt, pepper, spices of your choice, cilantros, chopped green onions, and parsley. Make the soup your signature soup. Put some love and passion into your work of art.

The same principle applies to a chicken base soup, pork base soup, or a combination of meats soup. Use your imagination to create the soup your family likes.

This should be enough for several meals, next day lunch, snacks, and so on.

We are indoors most of the time due to the cold in the winter. We constantly lose water through skin evaporation from household (indoor) heat. Household heat can insidiously cause wintertime dehydration. Most of us don’t think about dehydration in the winter. So, beware and drink about the same amount of fluid as the summer season.

Remember, alcoholic beverages are like diuretics. They increase the excretion of fluid from your body. So, if you plan on drinking alcohol, be conscientious to take in a little more fluid than normal for proper fluid replacement.

Think about how each portions of your intake is comparable to an 8-ounce fluid. Use common sense and rational thoughts to arrive at your daily requirements.

Eat sensibly and drink plenty of filtered water to preserve your health and well being.

Common Sense Fluid Replacement

As we approach to another (hot) summer, let’s enjoy the summer time fun without the aches and pain from our joints.

There will be many who will be dehydrated and not even know it during the summer months. Dehydration has some potential negative effects. We will discuss some of the more common ones.

Hydration is a complex subject rarely discuss to the satisfaction of the person asking the question. The common accepted notion of hydration is …“eight glasses of water a day”…

What does eight glasses a day mean to the dessert dwellers? How about the hot and humid summers of southeast United States? What about the dry cold winters of the northeast United States (usually spent indoors in the presence of dry artificial heat)? Environmental influences is just one thing one has to ponder over when considering what a typical day should be in the lives of the person asking the question.

Now, about the size of the glass. Is a glass 12 ounce? 8 ounces? 6 ounces? How much should a glass hold?

A typical person is how heavy? 150 pounds? 180 pounds? Maybe over 200 pounds? How about over 300 pounds??? Naturally, the heavier the person, the more you need to drink, right? WRONG!

What is water? Is it tap water? Bottled water? Water in the form of coffee or tea? Water in the form of soda pop? How about water content in the form of summer succulent fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, pineapple, pears, melons, etc. How does enter into the equation of hydration?

Am I confusing you yet?

I will share with you the concept of individual customization of proper hydration in the summer time. The interpretation and self-empowerment is not available from your neighborhood medical office. You can only get it here at my website. So keep coming back for more ways to live a fuller and healthier life.

Here are some background physiology and then some guidelines to hydration. The joints in our body are bathed in synovial fluids. The major joints include knee, elbow, wrist, and fingers. There must be enough fluid in the body reserve to supply the raw material for the manufacturing of synovial fluid. Without the lubricating actions of synovial fluid, you will experience some degree of stiffness in the joints.

This is similar to a squeaky door hinge that squeaks when you open or close the door. You may need to squirt a little oil (WD40, 3 in 1oil, lubricant) to reduce the friction on the two surfaces.

The body’s joints behave much the same way, when your body is dehydrated, there is not enough fluid to function in the capacity to supply lubrication between the two joint surfaces. Thus, over time, you have “arthritis”.

To prevent arthritis, the simplest thing is to properly hydrate you. How do we properly hydrate ourselves? Let’s have 8 portions of fluid of your choice and your liking. Use the rule of substitution to arrive at any eight portions.

more info to come next week...

Here are some suggested supplements in addition to the daily eight glasses of water.

link for joint supplement http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10904&cat2ID=USA20908

link for Aloe Juice supplement http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10907&cat2ID=USA20917

link for mineral supplements http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10909&cat2ID=USA20923

link for trace minerals supplements http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10909&cat2ID=USA20922

link for vitamin C http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10909&cat2ID=USA20925

link for energy supplement http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10909&cat2ID=USA20921

Allergies and ADD/ADHD

Allergies and ADD/ADHD is an issue worth paying some attention to before the summer months. Here's why!

Spring is here. Hooray! Or is it???

Springtime can be a dreaded time for some of us with allergies. Pollens are everywhere. As April showers wax and wean, wild flowers blossoms to produce more pollens. This is exponentially increased as late spring showers result in more vegetation growth resulting in lingering late summer pollens.

Unfortunately, all the allergen particles overwhelm the ADD/ADHD immune system. The ADD/ADHD physiology tend to be highly sensitive to environmental allergens. Thereby, an increase load of pollens likely will give us runny noses, watery eyes, and that overall “blab” feeling.

Wait. There’s help on the way.

OPC-3 is a powerful antioxidant combination of plant derived bioflavonoids, known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC's). These OPC's are super effective free radical neutralizers. It also contains a combination of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) from sources that include grape seed, red wine and Pycnogenol® pine bark extracts.

Pycnogenol® has been evaluated in more than a hundred studies with over 2000 participants demonstrating significant benefits for a strong cardiovascular system and healthy lipid and sugar metabolism. Therefore, decreasing the cell-mediated allergic response and its inflammatory cascade system.

It wasn't that long ago that Pycnogenol was claimed to have benefits for ADD/ADHD. The beneficial effects of Pycnogenol's can be seen Diabetes, Cholesterol Control, Inflammation, Asthma, Skin Care, Menstrual Disorders, Fertility, Sport Endurance and Cognitive Function in children (i.e. ADD/ADHD) and elderly.

Other types of antioxidants include Isotonix Antioxidant and Maximun ORAC.

In ancient cultures throughout the world, the Aloe vera plants have been used for many medicinal purposes. The chemical analysis shows that Aloe vera contains vitamins, minerals, triglyceride, carbohydrates, amino acids, enzymes, and of course, water. The vitamins found in Aloe include B-complex, B-1, B-2, B-3 and B-12, choline, folic acid, vitamin C, and beta carotene (a precursor to Vitamin A) - all of which are vital to general good health in body systems and some of which are vital for the formation of certain enzymes.

Aloe vera works because the green skin of the plant produces and the sap stores at least 6 antiseptic agents: lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamonic acid, phenol, and sulfur. All of these substances are clinically recognized for their ability to eliminate infection because they kill or control microorganism including fungi, bacteria, and viruses.

In addition, the plant also produces at least 23 proteins; (polypeptides) and at least 4 mannan sugars, which regulate cell growth and stimulate the immune system (biogenic stimulators). Theses agents greatly increase the skin's own defenses against infections by improving immune function.

More reading about Aloe vera plant and Aloe Juice by placing your cursor with the computer mouse on the word "Aloe Juice" in this sentence. This will take you to a link and click under the "Description" line

Personally, I prefered the strawberry kiwi flavor Ultimate Aloe Juice. There are Cranberry Apple flavor or the straight Aloe Juice. Pick your favorite flavor Aloe Juice.

One of many ADD/ADHD symptoms are anxiety, the ability to handle daily stresses, emotional lability, etc. Stress has been shown to have negative effects on the body such as adverse affects on reproduction, sexual behavior, weight gain/loss, mood swings, and weakening the immune system, making you more vulnerable to colds, flu, fatigue and infections..

Anti-Stress Formula is for those who need to decrease anxiety, increase mental clarity, and helps the body deal with the effects of stress naturally. The Anti-Stress Formula Bliss promotes relaxation without drowsiness, helps stabilize your mood, and is ideal for any adult individual encountering consistent stressful days or an upcoming stressful event. So take control of your (ADD/ADHD) life today and give your mind and body an arsenal to combat stress.

The point of all this is simple. When you have good immune health you will have significantly less allergies. No more over the counter anti-histamines, anti-congestion, or anti-allergy medication. Save your money and transfer your buying habits that's going to be ADD/ADHD physiology-friendly.

How does this relate to ADD/ADHD?

Some of the ADD/ADHD traits may be secondary to the toxicity within our body and the inability of our organs to eliminate them.

The (oxidative) stresses from daily living may be enough on a cumulative basis to slowly weaken the immune system. When the immune system cannot keep the allergens in check, then our body slowly begins to break down. Additional supplement such as Complete Green could enhance your health and immune system.

The symptoms are non-descript. You may feel tired, lack of energy, not your “normal self”, going to bed earlier and getting up later, and becoming more irritable. Anxiety is prevalent. Common complaints from people close to you may comment that “you’re lazy”.

The fact of the matter is probably none of the above or just one or two of the above. If you body was firing in all cylinders, many of the symptoms maybe decrease and totally eliminated.

If you are a cigarette smoker and have ADD/ADHD, the toxins within the cigarettes will harm you immune system. Therefore, another supplement called Oxygen Plus would be useful.

When the threshold of the immune is constantly being exceeded, the immune system starts to behave in a strange manner. It becomes hyperactive loosing the self-regulatory parameters. Thus, the immune system reverse it protective mechanism against outsider allergens and starts to attack itself.

When this happens a host of enzymatic reaction occurs through a cascade system. This cascade system escalades into blurring the line between the "good" and the "bad" foreign matters. Therefore, just about everything is perceived as foreign to the immune system and it's being attacked indescriminatory.

The result is a regulatory mechanism out of balance and out of control.

The solution is to build up the immune system and simultaneously remove the offending agents in the body. Build your immune system by taking supplements to counteract the deleterious biological oxidative effects of metabolism within our body.

To slow down the oxidative process, supplements such as OPC3, ORAC, multi-vitamins, minererals, Bliss, and Ulitmate Aloe Juice are necessary just to keep pace with our active stressful lifestyle.

I suggest you read up on the supplements available as a word of caution. Some health professionals may not embrace the holistic philosophy of health and preventative medicine. My reccomendation is to become an informed consumer to find out what's best for you.

Thank you for showing an interest in my philosophy of holistic and integrative medicine to modulate the unique ADD/ADHD person.

Exercising without breaking into a sweat!

Exercising without breaking into a sweat is not a gimmick. It is a lifestyle. I will give you a few scenerios as illustration. You customized your routine to fit exercise into your busy lifestyle.

When you park at your work, park at the furthest parking spot from your work. This allows you to walk the extra few minutes to and from you work. Take the stairs whenever possible to get the "stair master" exercise routine into your work day.

The same applies to grocery shopping. Park at the edge of the parking lot. Go walk to retrieve a shopping cart in the parking lot. Push the cart into the store and systematically go up and down each and every aisle. Be sure to stick with your shopping list to avoid impulsive spending.

Please allow the extra time for shopping/exercise so you won't feel rushed and frustrated from time constraint issues.

Shopping at the mall with friends and family can be another opportunity to get in more exercise. Window shop and visit the stores. However, have a set financial budget before starting the shopping spree. Always take the stairs whenever possible.

Park in a location that is easy to find and exit from at the end of the day shopping in the mall. Preferrablely further away from the closest exits.

Walk around the perimeter of the large office complex and or the parking sturcture if you work in the corporate environment. Always wear comfortable shoes. Never skimp on inferior (i.e. cheap) shoes.

Make a habit of walking to nearby shops and restaurants.

Change your lifestyle habits. Leave the car behind; WALK!

Exercise Tips:
--comfortable footwear.
--sufficient fluids (water, gatorade, lemonade, juices, etc) before and sometimes after the exercise to stay hydrated).
--commit a time for yourself without external interference. This is YOUR TIME.
--slowly work yourself up to your body's ability. DO NOT OVEREXERT YOURSELF.
--enjoy the moment while you exercise.
--monitor your dress size or cloth size. Weight may not be a good indicator of you improved self. Don't let your weight fluctuation alarm you. Go steady ahead as planned.
--exercise a daily combined total of 30 to 60 minutes per day would be adequate. More exercise is encouraged. Go with your comfort level.

If you have any pain or discomfort from your exercise, immediately stop the exercise and consult your physician.

Exercise benefits

Exercise is one of the most important and least expensive components of the therapeutic regiment in treating ADD/ADHD. Yet it is the most neglected adjunct in helping the patient maximized their assortment of therapeutic choices.

The physiological importance and benefits of exercise is well known and well documented throughout the medical literature. Exercises increase perfusion to functional organs.

As the organs of the body receive increase blood flow (perfusion), more nutrients are brought to the working organs. Simultaneously, waste by-products are removed at the cellular level. Thereby, allowing the organs to function at a higher efficiency.

Why don’t the medical professions emphasize exercise?

One simple implication would be that of economics. There’s very little financial incentive (for pharmaceutical companies that manufactures Ritalin) to implement an exercise program. There’s no economic bottom line to promote exercise.

On the contrary, when physician write prescriptions (of Ritalin), the pharmacy fills it, the patient takes it, the patient gets the anticipated outcome, and the pharmaceutical manufactures makes profit.

Total blame is not on the pharmaceutical company. The patient must take some imitative and responsibilities for his or her care. We are being led to a “little patient participation is necessary” paradigm within the medical practice. Unfortunately, this is the standard of care in today’s medical communities.

Exercise not only is a good for ADD/ADHD people, but can improve a whole host of other illnesses.

Next week I will discuss how to involve daily exercise routine into our daily schedule without breaking a sweat (an oxymoron!).

Non-medical therapy for ADD/ADHD - Visualization

This article is about one of the various non-pharmaceutical treatment modality to help those with ADD/ADHD. Just because you think you have ADD/ADHD or not is irrelevant. The issue is to find a solution to what you may have. Simple enough?

I will start with the most basic and the easiest non-medical techniques to help ADD/ADHD. It is visualization.

Visualization is simple, free (cost nothing out of pocket), and is effective to calm the mind. In addition to having a calmer focused mind, there are other physiological health benefits such as lower blood pressure, improved cognition, decreasing your stress level, feeling happier, feeling more fulfilled, and ultimately living longer.

Here is a simple exercise to follow. I recommend you modify this to your specific situation.

Please DO NOT Practice this while driving!

Find a quiet place to sit and start breathing deeply. Work up to a five count inhale and five count exhale. Then, challenge yourself to a seven count exhale and five count inhale. If you are able to go up to the seven count, that’s good. If not able just yet, that’s fine too. Do what’s comfortable.

After 2 to 5 minutes of deep breathing, start to clear your mind of the normal daily mental clutters. You may be overwhelmed with so many thoughts initially. Continue breathing until you feel relax.

Imagine you are the director, screenwriter, the cast, and the most appreciative audience viewing the best picture of the year movie. This is at your private home theater with surround sound and technicolor.

You say to yourself “I want to spend a few minutes in the theater of my mind (visualize the actions in your mind). I am relaxed. I sip coffee watching the sunrise on my beachfront home. I finished breakfast. I kiss to my family good bye. I leave for the office. The drive (or travel) to the office is so pleasant. Every one at work greets me with a big smile. I sit at work and feeling grateful that I have this career. My staff is super wonderful. At the end of the day, all my staff stops by to say goodbye. I come home for dinner and my family greets me with a big hug and smile. I retired to my studies and read a good book. I love my life and retire for bed. I am grateful for this wonderful fulfilled day.”

This is just one of millions of the “best picture” movie in your mind's library collection. You pick and choose what is your “best picture”. Be creative. Be positive. Expect positive outcomes.

IGNORE negative thoughts and outcomes. Pretend they are not there. Negativities doesn't exist!

By holding on to those pleasant thoughts throughout your imaginative day, you can draw energy from those moments to carry you through during some difficult moments. Practice regularly and you subconscious world and conscious world may become one and the same.

Are you open-minded enough to accept the good stuff to your current life? Believe in yourself. Believe in your world. And your world will become a colorful high definition theater that you created.

Neurofeedback for ADD and others with brain disregulation

The diagnoiss of ADD is somewhat of a creatation of our fast pace society. We have the mass media, the marketing culture, the technological "revolution" and decreasing family values to thank for the exponential "diagnosis" of ADD. Unless there is some definitive pathological "damage" in the brain and nervous system, the behavioral aspects of ADD is artificially described as a "disorder" without a frugal palatable solution to the ADD "disorder".

By merely describing a disorder in detail does not signify an understanding. Thus, the controversy. Even if there is a pathological etiology, the end result of being able to function at a higher capability is worth exploring (at least, for the affected patient).

However, the main stream allopathic medical community may not be so excited about welcoming an "untested" theurapeutic modality, such as neurofeedback. This can be compared with the plight of the Chiropratic field some three decades earlier whereby their theurpeutic modality was often disregarded as "non-medical and non-mainstream" and not worthy of health insurance reimbursement acknowledgement.

Look what a few decades has done for Chiropractic. With that as my introducing premise, I will share with my audience the benefits of neurofeedback as a treatment modality for the ADD person and others who may wish to use this as an adjunct theurapy to mainstream "medical" management.

What is nueurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is direct training of brain function, by which the brain learns to function more efficiently. We observe the brain in action from moment to moment. We show that information back to the person and we reward the brain for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns.

This is a gradual learning process. It applies to any aspect of brain function that we can measure. Neurofeedback is also called EEG biofeedback, because it is based on electrical brain activity, the electroencephalogram, or EEG. Neurofeedback is training in self-regulation. It is simply biofeed- back applied to the brain directly. Self-regulation is a necessary part of good brain function. Self-regulation training allows the system (the central nervous system) to function better

What are the benefits of neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback addresses problems of brain disregulation. These happen to be numerous. They include the anxiety-depression spectrum, attention deficits disorder, behavior disorders, various sleep disorders, headaches, migraines, PMS, and emotional disturbances. It is also useful for organic brain conditions such as seizures, the autism spectrum, and cerebral palsy.

The ADD/ADHD symptoms may go away. So, does this mean the person is cured? Well, from another prosepcetive, is this the same endpoint? The jury is out.

Indeed, with neurofeedback the symptoms may be entirely suppressed. A person with diagnosed Attention Deficit Disorder may be able to train the brain to pay attention, so that condition will no longer be diagnosable.

The analogy would be a person coming in with migraines may no longer have them. (However, that person may still have a greater "vulnerability" to migraines than the average person on the street.) A person with epilepsy may no longer have seizures. (Although that person still retains a vulnerability to seizures.) A child with severe rages and temper tantrums may not have them again.

How is it done?

The electrodes are applied to the scalp to listen in on brainwave activity. The signals are then processed by the computer, and information is extracted regarding certain key brainwave frequencies. (All brainwave frequencies are equal, but some or more equal than others….)

The ebb and flow of this activity is giving back to the person, who attempts to change the brain activity level. This is an active participatory process. Some brain frequencies are promoted while others are diminished through the subject's effort. The information is presented in a video game situation where the person is actively playing the video game with his or her brain activity.

Eventually the brainwave activity is "shaped" toward more desirable, more regulated performance. The frequencies targeted is related to the specific locations on the scalp where we listen in on the brain. These are specific to the conditions we are trying to address and are specific to the individual.

May this be considered a cure for some of these conditions?

In the case of organic brain disorders, it can only be a matter of getting the brain to function better rather than of curing the condition. When it comes to problems of disregulation, we would say that there is not a disease to be cured. Where disregulation is the problem, self-regulation may very well be the remedy. But again the word cure would not apply.

What conditions can it help?

In the Brian Othmer Foundation, they are especially concerned with the more "intractable" brain-based problems of childhood whose needs are not currently being met. This includes first of all seizures and febrile convulsions. It includes the severely disruptive behavior disorders, such as conduct disorder and bipolar disorder. It includes the autistic spectrum and pervasive developmental delay. It includes cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury and birth trauma. Many children have sleep problems that can be helped: bedwetting, nightmares and night terrors, sleep walking, and teeth grinding.

They can also be helpful with many of the problems of adolescence: drug-taking, suicidal behavior, ADD/ADHD, anxiety and depression. And we can also help to maintain good brain function as people get older. The good news is that almost any brain, regardless of its level of function, can be trained to function better.

How do you know how to train a particular brain?

Over the years, certain training protocols have been developed that are helpful with certain classes of problems such as attention, anxiety and depression, seizures and migraines, as well as cognitive function. There are a number of assessment tools we use to help us decide which protocols to use. These are simple neurodiagnostic and neuro-psychological tests

Website link is http://www.eeginfo.com/info_what.htm

What is neurodiagnostic and neurophysiological testing?

Neurofeedback addresses issues of brain function, and hence assessment likewise is aimed at measuring function: A continuous performance test called the TOVA ® (Test of Variables of Attention) is used in order to characterize impulsivity and attention. There are other tests of cognitive function and memory. Screenings for certain visual problems that are ordinarily overlooked should be part of the ful work up. Some can measure the EEG with quantitative and statistical assessments, a technique referred to as Quantitative EEG, or simply qEEG.

What is Quantitative EEG (qEEG)?

QEEG is one of the modern brain imaging techniques. PET, SPECT and fMRI scans look at how metabolic activity is distributed in the brain, the qEEG looks at how electrical activity is distributed over the scalp. In terms of imaging, nothing else is as fast in revealing brain activity as the qEEG. It is also completely non-invasive, and can be done in a clinician's office. It is well suited to the needs of the neurofeedback clinician. Often a qEEG will be recommended for clients with clients with brain injury or developmental disorders, in order to help determine the path toward improved function.

What happens if neurofeedback clients are taking medications?

With successful neurofeedback training, the medications targeting brain function may be decreased or no longer needed. The brain takes over more of the role of regulating itself. This decrease in medications may be significant in the therapeutic treatment plan. The managing physician should be communicated regarding the neurofeedback progress and medication adjusted accordingly.

Is neurofeedback treatment covered by health insurance?

There are insurance codes for biofeedback, under which neurofeedback is covered. And there are codes for combining psychotherapy with biofeedback/neurofeedback. However, coverage for chronic mental health concerns is rarely adequate in the United States, so patients may have to advocate strongly with their insurance company for reimbursement.

The typical per-session fee ranges from $50 to 125 depending on the part of the country and the qualifications of the professional. In addition, there are costs of assessment, which are usually billed separately.

Is home-training a possibility?

Many of the conditions treatable with neurofeedback involve long-term training, as the brain's capacity to function is gradually enhanced. For some children, neurofeedback may remain a useful challenge over their life span. To make this economically viable, remote training is an available option for parents.

Remote training refers to home training under the (remote) supervision of a clinician. After parents have had their child trained with a clinician for at least twenty sessions, they may transition to remote training and continue on that basis, consulting with the clinician regularly to monitor progress and determine changes in protocol. Then training can be done frequently and consistently, on an affordable basis.

Does neurofeedback sound like a real breakthrough? Yes. And should I be hopeful for my child? Again, Yes. The most significant scientific frontier in health care at this time is to understand how our brain functions. We are beginning to learn the brain's "operating system," (or the software equalevant to your computer) and these findings are not without clinical implications and controversy.

Using neurofeedback is like installing/downloading a new software to your computer. The goal after the install/download is to make your computer more effective and efficient. The same is true after properly training the functional brain to be more effective and efficient in dealing with the acitivites of daily living.

Neurofeedback has shown to improve almost any functioning brain function better. But it can only promise positive progress, not perfection.

We invite readers to return to this site occasionally for updates on this and other "alternative" theurapeutic modality for the ADD/ADHD and others.

WHY Aloe vera?

"Why aloe vera?" is the topic today.

Aloe vera has been used in early cultures for centuries for their medicinal properties. There are over 240 different species of Aloe, growing mainly in the dry regions of Africa, Asia, Europe and America. Although Aloe vera is a member of the Lily family, it is very cactus-like in appearance.

Of the 240+ species of Aloe, four are recognized as having nutritional value, with Aloe barbadensis miller leading the group. Aloe barbadensis miller is the type of Aloe used in most commercial products with aloe content available today.

The aloe species commonly contain over 75 nutrients and 200 active compounds, including 20 minerals, 18 amino acids, and 12 vitamins.

CHEMISTRY - THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING

Aloe vera works because the green skin of the plant produces and the sap stores at least 6 antiseptic agents: lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamonic acid, phenol, and sulfur. All of these substances are clinically recognized for their ability to eliminate infection because they kill or control microorganism including fungi, bacteria, and viruses.

In addition, the plant also produces at least 23 proteins; (polypeptides) and at least 4 mannan sugars, which regulate cell growth and stimulate the immune system (biogenic stimulators). These agents greatly increase the skin's own defenses against infections by improving immune function. Polypeptides and mannans are the building blocks for new, healthy cells. They are more abundant in young skin cells. As aging occurs, the amount of polypeptides and mannans in the cells diminishes.

Topical application of an Aloe product helps provide ample concentrations of these agents for the proper formation of healthy cells. Polypeptides and mannans are two of the reasons Aloe helps to heal skin injuries with reduced scarring.

The skin and yellow sap (latex) of the Aloe Vera plant contains at least 3 anti-inflammatory fatty acids (HDL cholesterol, campesterol, and beta-sitosterol). They represent cortisone-like compounds, which make Aloe extremely effective in treating the inflammation associated with burns, cuts, abrasions and skin diseases, as well as a treatment for ulcers of all kinds.

The presence of beta-sitosterol explains why topical Aloe vera is effective in skin allergies and irritations, and why it helps to balance out the HDL and LDL cholesterol of the skin. Cholesterol, campesterol, and beta-sitosterol are plant sterols that are responsible for Aloe's effectiveness as an excellent moisturizer.

Traumatic acid and allantoin (FDA approved for minor skin problems) are also found in the skin and sap, is wound healing agents. Lupeol, Salicylic acid, and plant magnesium are highly effective analgesics, which explains why Aloe is a topical painkiller.

Aloe contains at least three cancer fighting compounds. Lectins induce systemic anti-tumor immunity. Aloe-emodin and Aloe mannans have been shown to control many types of skin cancers. Aloe also contains small amounts of PABA (para-amino benzoic acid), a natural sunscreen, which lessens the likelihood of sun-induces damage.

Aloe's acemannan has received FDA approval for AIDS treatment trials in Canadian double blind, placebo controlled study. The USDA as a veterinary treatment for fibrosarcoma has approved injectable acemannan.

100% STABILIZED FOR MAXIMUM EFFECTIVENESS
The Aloe vera plant is classified as a vegetable and like all plant products, the juice must be preserved or will rapidly decompose when the leaves are processed. Therefore, preservatives are added during processing to retard the growth of microorganisms. Potassium sorbate (from Mountain Ash trees) and sodium benzoate (from benzoin gum) are used in minute quantities as preservatives, and ascorbic and citric acid (from citrus) as antioxidants to stabilize and provide pH balance.

NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF ALOE VERA
A chemical analysis shows that Aloe vera contains vitamins, minerals, triglyceride, carbohydrates, amino acids, enzymes, and of course, water.

Vitamins: The vitamins found in Aloe include B-complex, B-1, B-2, B-3 and B-12, choline, folic acid, vitamin C, and beta carotene (a precursor to Vitamin A) - all of which are vital to general good health in body systems and some of which are vital for the formation of certain enzymes.

Minerals: Aloe has been shown to contain as many as 13 of the 17 minerals needed for good nutrition. Minerals found in Aloe include calcium, magnesium, potassium, chloride, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, chromium, sulfur, aluminum, strontium, boron, silicon, lithium, phosphorous, nickel and sodium. All these minerals are vital in the growth process and essential for the function of all body systems.

Triglyceride: Triglycerides include fats, oil, and waxes. They carry the fat-soluble vitamins, supply the fatty acids essential for growth and general health of all body tissue and help supply energy.

Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates assist in digestion and assimilation of nutrients in food and supply energy for muscular exertion. They also control protein breakdown, the distribution of sodium, potassium, chloride, and water for electrolyte balance. Identified carbohydrates include glucose, mannose, and acemannan.

Amino Acids: Aloe Vera juice contains twenty of the twenty-two amino acids known to be needed for good nutrition; nine of these essential and must be supplied from an outside source because the body cannot manufacture its own. The body from the essential or nine can synthesize the other thirteen. Aloe has been shown to contain all of the essential nine. The complete list of amino acids known to exist in Aloe include lysine, histidine, arginine, aspartic acid, asparagine, threonine, serine, glutamine, hydroproline, proline, glycine, alanine, cystine, valine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, glutamic acid, and phenylalanine.

Enzymes: Without enzymes, the chemical reaction of vitamins, minerals, and hormones cannot take place. They also aid in reducing indigestion and inflammation of ulcers. Enzymes present in Aloe include alkaline phosphates, SGO transaminase.

Directions:
Take 2 to 4 ounces daily. Tastes best cold. You can mix with a neutral juice like apple.

Ultimate Aloe Ingredients: Aloe vera concentrate, citric acid, ascorbic acid, potassium sorbate, and sodium benzoate. CranApple Ultimate Aloe Ingredients: Aloe vera concentrate, citric acid, ascorbic acid, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, honey, fructose, and natural cranberry and apple flavor.

Strawberry Kiwi Ultimate Aloe: (the most delicious aloe juice) Whole leaf Aloe vera concentrate, purified water, fructose, natural strawberry kiwi flavor, ascorbic acid, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate. I recomend this flavor.

The reason for taking aloe juice for the ADD person is because of the detox properties, anti-inflammatory properties, health benefits, amino acids, vitamins and nutrients, and various active compounds (that has not been thoroughly investigated yet). Once the body has the appropriate raw material to work with, things will function better. Thus, impulsivity is lessened. Hyperactivity may be curtailed to acceptable "societial standards". And the ease of distractability may now be transformed into the ability to focus. All the above are good things to have to enhance one's ability to handle the stresses of life. People with active as well as sedentary lifestyles need antioxidants. No one is safe from the ravages of the environment, the erosion of the earth's ozone layer, processed foods, and even our body's own metabolic process.

Did you know breathing each day causes oxidation internally in your body, similar to a car rusting, and a fresh cut apple turning brown? You can bolster our body's defenses by eating the right foods, but if you have a hard time doing that, just take Oxygen Plus (see below)!

FREE RADICAL PROTECTION
There are seven different types of free radicals and several nutritional substances with antioxidant capabilities for each type.

Scientists now believe that by increasing the body's intake of antioxidants we can actually delay or prevent much of the deterioration and illness caused by aging; even, perhaps add five to ten years to our life span. The challenge: finding the right antioxidants, in the right amounts, to effectively target the different types of free radicals in the body.

Physicians and Biochemists in research centers such as UCLA, USC School of Pharmacy and Mt. Sinai Medical School has discovered:
Free radicals can cause cancer
Free radicals can cause atherosclerosis
Free radicals can cause emphysema
Free radicals can cause cataracts and glaucoma
Free radicals can cause high blood pressure
Free radicals can cause immune system deficiencies
Free radicals can cause heart disease
Free radicals can cause arthritis
Free radicals can cause stroke
Free radicals can cause Parkinson's Disease
Free radicals can cause various dermatoses
Free radicals can cause premature aging of the skin

OXYGEN PLUS is a combination of vitamins, minerals and special herbs in capsule form that help protect our body from free radicals that can cause damage to your cells, impairing the immune system and leading to various degenerative disease. Oxygen Plus counteracts seven known species of free radicals.

OXYGEN PLUS is a natural anti-aging, antioxidant breakthrough
Ingredients:

Bilberry - Its chief action as an antioxidant is its powerful synergy with Vitamin E. On the most basic level, it increases the resistance of blood capillaries and reduces their permeability.

Bilberry anthocyanosides also favorably affect the operation of crucial enzymes in the enzymes in the retinal cellular metabolism and function. It shows excellent anti-inflammatory action, it also inhibits cholesterol-induce atherosclerosis. Bilberry inhibits serum platelet aggregation (clotting). (25 mg)

Green Tea Extract - A health promoting and life prolonging antioxidant. It is rich in polyphenols that have been shown to inhibit the action of many common cancers causing chemicals and in protecting arteries against the damage caused by high fat diets. (250 mg)

Ginkgo Biloba - Improves memory loss, brain function, depression, cerebral and peripheral circulation, and oxygenation and blood flow. Good for tinnitus and glucose utilization. (25 mg)

Glutathione - A powerful antioxidant that inhibits the formation of free radicals. It protects against damage from cigarette smoking and radiation, helps reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and x-rays, and combats alcohol poisoning. As a detoxifying agent of metals and drugs, it aids in the treatment of blood and liver disorders. (1000 mcg)

Milk Thistle - Used for all liver disorders such as jaundice and hepatitis. Milk Thistle contains some of the most potent liver-protecting substances known. It prevents free radical damage by acting as an antioxidant; thus, protecting the liver. It stimulates the production of new liver cells and prevents the formation of damaging leukotrienes. It protects the kidneys and is beneficial to those with psoriasis. (25 mg)

Selenium - Is a vital antioxidant, especially when combined with Vitamin E as an antioxidant; selenium protects the immune system by preventing the formation of free radicals, which can damage the body. Selenium and vitamin E act synergistically to aid in the production of antibodies and help to maintain a healthy heart. This trace element is needed for pancreatic function and tissue elasticity. A partner/synergist with vitamin E, selenium is essential for the key enzyme, glutathione peroxidase (each enzyme molecule contains four selenium atoms). It stimulates increased antibody response to germ infection. (200 meg)

Beta-Carotene (vitamin A precursor)- This supplement prevents night blindness and other eye problems as well as some skin disorders such as acne. It enhances immunity, may promote gastrointestinal health, protects again pollution, and is needed for epithelial tissue maintenance and repair. It is important in the formation of bones and teeth, aids in fat storage. This important vitamin also slows the aging process. Without this supplement, the body cannot utilize protein. When food that contains beta-carotene is consumed, it is converted to vitamin A in the liver. Beta-carotene aids in cancer prevention, according to recent reports. No vitamin overdose can occur with beta-carotene, although the skin may turn slightly yellow-orange in color.

Vitamin A is necessary for healthy mucus cells and promotes germ-killing enzymes. Beta-carotene and vitamin A destroy carcinogens (cancer-producing substances). (2500 I.U.)

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) - Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is required for tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland functions, and healthy gums. It protects against the harmful effects of pollution, protects against infections, and enhances immunity.

It also may reduce cholesterol levels and high blood pressure and prevent atherosclerosis. Essential in the formation of collagen, vitamin C protects against blood clotting and bruising and promotes the healing of wounds and the production of anti-stress hormones. It also aids in interferon production.

It is needed for the metabolism of folic acid, tyrosine, and phenylalanine.

New evidence indicates that vitamin C and vitamin E works synergistically, that is, when they work together, they have a greater effect than when they work separately. Vitamin E scavenges dangerous oxygen radicals in the cell membrane, while vitamin C breaks free radical properties in biologic fluids. Both these vitamins greatly extend antioxidant activity.

In addition to increasing interferon production, vitamin C is a potent stimulator of T-effector cell activity. Vitamin C reduces lipid production in the brain and spinal cord, which frequently incur radical damage. These sites can be protected by significant amounts of vitamin C, which is needed to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Vitamin C acts as a more potent free radical scavenger in the presence of a bioflavonoid called hesperidin. (100 mg)

Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol succinate) - Vitamin E is an antioxidant. This supplement improves circulation, and is useful in treating fibrocystic breasts and premenstrual syndrome. It also promotes normal clotting and healing, reduces scarring from some wounds, reduces blood pressure, aids in preventing cataracts, improves athletic performance and aids in leg cramps.

Vitamin E also prevents cell damage by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and the formulation of free radicals. It regards aging and may prevent age spots as well. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that prevents fat and cell membrane rancidity and protects the coating around each cell.

Vitamin E improves oxygen utilization and enhances immune response. New evidence suggests that Zinc is needed to maintain normal blood concentration of Vitamin E. (15 I.U.)

WHERE DO WE GET FREE RADICALS?

Free radicals are generated by stress, cigarette smoke, aldehydes, dibasic acids, rancid oils, polyvalent metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, etc.), sodium nitrite (a cold cut preservative), nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxides, ozone and radiation (x-rays, nuclear fall out, cosmic rays, chemicals from food and water).

Even exercise creates free radicals as a result of toxic by-products of exhaustion.

Most of the free radicals in the body are the results of a chemical process known a lipid peroxidation. Lipids are oils and fats that are essential parts of the cells. It is when externally caused reactions get out of control that we run into problems.

HOW DO WE ELMINATE FREE RADICALS?

There are number of vitamins and herbs that inactivate free radicals. Most vitamins and nutrients classified as antioxidants are also free radical inactivaters.

Very few individual, if any, reach their potential maximum life span; they die instead prematurely of a wide variety of diseases - the vast majority being "free radicals diseases.
(Denham Harman, M.D., Ph.D.)

Website link: antioxidants
http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10902&cat2ID=USA20902

link for OPC-3 anitoxidant
http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10902&cat2ID=USA20904

link for Oxygen Plus antioxidant
http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10902&cat2ID=USA20905

link for ORAC and anti-aging
http://richchan.unfranchise.com/index.cfm?action=shopping.uoShopProducts&storeID=8&cat1ID=USA10902&cat2ID=USA20903

oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC)

I like to share with my audience about a proprietary product helpful to ADD and as a potential anti-aging product.

OPC-3 is a powerful combination of plant derived bioflavonoids, know as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC's). It is made from a combination of grape seed, pine bark and red wine extracts in addition to bilberry and citrus extracts. These OPC's are super effective free radical neutralizers. They are not limited to being strong antioxidants, they are also crucial in their role in supporting the circulatory system and strengthening the capillaries. OPC-3 is a natural food supplement that should be taken for a lifetime.

Each capful of OPC-3™ contains 125 milligrams of bioflavonoids, of which 75 milligrams are oligomeric proanthocyanidins in an isotonic-capable base. That means that the OPC-3™ active ingredients will be delivered in the highest concentration to the small intestine, where most absorption of nutrients occurs. To start using OPC-3™ for its benefit as an antioxidant and free radical scavenger, take two level capfuls for every 150 pounds of body weight for the first seven days. This is referred to as the saturation dosage. Then, switch to a daily dosage of one capful, per 150 lbs. of body weight, as a maintenance dose. For example, if you weigh 190 pounds, you would take three servings of OPC-3™ per day for seven days, then switch to two servings per day for long-term health maintenance. Any excess of OPC-3™ will not be of any negative consequence, since OPC-3™ is non-toxic.

OPC-3™ contains a combination of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) from sources that include grape seed, red wine and pine bark† extracts. The grape seed extract is the superior source of OPCs, containing 92% of active ingredients over pine bark's 84% of active OPC ingredients.* The red wine extract contains flavonoids called leucocyanidins from the skin of red grapes. Leucocyanidins are bioflavonoids with powerful antioxidant properties crucial to their role in supporting the circulatory system. OPC-3™ also contains bilberry and citrus extracts, which are known to have effects of vision and histamine release, respectively. Together, this combination of OPC is superior to any OPC on the market in active ingredients and isotonic capability. This powerful formula will be delivered to your system the way nature intended it to be - in an isotonic solution that maximizes absorption. OPC-3™ has a pleasant natural grape flavor, is a vegetarian product, and mixes instantly when added to water. This product should be taken on an empty stomach for the fastest, most effective delivery of the active ingredient.
*Percentages established by D. Marie-Claude Dumon, University of Bordeaux, France †Pine bark reference to pycnogenol source.

Our bodies are made up of billions of molecules held together by electromagnetic forces. These chemical bonds are created with paired electrons. Free radicals are unstable molecules that have lost an electron and are unbalanced. Free radicals seek to replace the lost electron by randomly attacking nearby molecules and extracting desired electrons. One free radical can damage a million or more molecules in a chain reaction referred to as radical propagation, which leads to oxidative stress. Uncontrolled oxidation is very destructive.
It is analogous to effects we see in our environment, such as the rusting of metal, the rotting of meat, the browning of apples or the hardening of old rubber. Oxidation in our body by free radicals is thought to be responsible for premature aging, wrinkling of skin, hardening of arteries, stiffening of joints, formation of cataracts, the initiation of cancer and much more. We are constantly exposed to free radicals via such processes as antimicrobial activity by white blood cells and the absorption of chemical additives in our foods. Our ability to fight free radical damage effectively is compromised by our inadequate nutritional choices or diets that contain limited amounts of antioxidants. Antioxidant supplementation is necessary if we are unable to reduce our exposure to free radicals, but wish to counter their effect. OPCs should be taken in conjunction with foods or dietary supplements rich in vitamin C, vitamin e, beta-carotene, and selenium, to name a few antioxidants.

In 1534, French explorer Jacques Cartier was leading an expedition up the St. Lawrence River. Trapped by bad weather, Cartier and his crew were forced to survive on a ration of salted meat and biscuits. Cartier's crew began to suffer from severe deficiency of vitamin C and showed symptoms of scurvy. Many crewmembers died before the surviving members encountered a friendly Native American who saved most of their lives. He told them to make a tea from the bark and needles of the pine tree to cure their malady. They complied and, as a result, Cartier and many crewmembers survived.

Some 400 years later, Professor Jacques Masquelier of the University of Bordeaux, France, read a book by Cartier detailing their expedition. He concluded that pine bark not only contained some vitamin C, but obviously was a good source of bioflavonoids, whose effects are similar to those of vitamin C. Further studies and research revealed that the pine bark contained an array of proanthocyanidins complexes. These compounds were also found in a variety of plants, including grape seeds, cranberries, peanut skin, lemon tree bark and citrus rinds. Masquelier termed the active ingredients of the pine bark "pycnogenols", which today are referred to in the scientific community as oligomeric proanthocyanidins, or OPCs.
OPCs have been used in Europe under medical supervision for over 30 years with no reports of adverse effects. Over one million people worldwide utilize these valuable bioflavonoids daily. OPCs have been tested time and time again for safety by conventional, scientific methods at leading research centers worldwide including the Pasteur Institute. This unspoiled and natural environment is the unique source of Pycnogenol®.

Pycnogenol® is the brand name for a premium herbal supplement extracted from the bark of the French maritime pine tree. That special pine bark is loaded with a concentrate of active bioflavonoids, which are also found in fresh fruits and vegetables. The extract from that bark is a potent blend of active compounds. Extensive research over a period of more than 30 years was dedicated to safety of Pycnogenol® and to substantiate the manifold benefits for human health of this extraordinary extract

Pycnogenol® represents a natural blend of genetically programmed constant proportions of bioflavonoids including catechin, epicatechin, taxifolin, monomers, dimers of catechin and epicatechin, oligomeric procyanidnins and phenolic fruit acids such as ferulic acid and caffeic acid.

Pycnogenol® is produced by a validated manufacturing process following good agricultural practice (GAP) and good manufacturing practice (GMP). There is absolutely no application of pesticides during the growing of pine trees or toxic solvents during the manufacture of Pycnogenol®, there can be no pesticide or solvent in the finished active substance.

More than 130 scientific articles and clinical trials have confirmed Pycnogenol®s safety, absence of toxicity and clinical efficacy. In today’s marketplace, Pycnogenol® is one of the best researched natural products. Scientific evidence on its Antioxidative Capacity and protective action on the Vascular System have been published in the most renowned scientific journals. Additional published findings have demonstrated Pycnogenol®s beneficial effects in Diabetes, Cholesterol Control, Inflammation, Asthma, Skin Care, Menstrual Disorders, Fertility, Sport Endurance and Cognitive Function (i.e. ADD/ADHD) in children and elderly.

As one of the most potent natural scavenger of free radicals, Pycnogenol® mops-up all kinds of aggressive radicals, before they cause any damage by oxidative stress. Pycnogenol® boosts the immune system and it strengthens blood vessel walls and capillaries. It supports a better circulation by preventing stress-induced constriction of arteries and blood clotting. Additionally the extract contains substances, which act against cramps.

Why fight free radicals? In every day life our body generates free radicals, especially in case of stress. These chemically unbalanced radicals cause damage to our cells by oxidizing them, in the same way as metal becomes rusty and destroyed. Hence, free radicals are dangerous and scientists believe that the continuous exposure to free radicals is the major cause of ageing and also of many degenerative diseases.

As a super-antioxidant, Pycnogenol® counteracts that danger in two ways: It stimulates our cells to double their antioxidative power and it catches free radicals in the blood stream. That double defense makes Pycnogenol® unique.

With the summer and the traveling season ahead of us, Pycnogenol has added benefits in the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (blood clot) while traveling on long flights.

Refer to link: http://www.pycnogenol.com/gif/pyc_miami_herald_article.gif for article about the benifits in preventing deep vein thrombosis on long flights.

How does this help with stressed (business, ADHD, hyperactive) people?
Stress means your adrenal gland is producing lots of adrenaline to handle the activities connected with a busy business person's schedule. This involves putting out fires in your office, stuck in traffic during your daily commute, demanding phone calls and loads of bad news, if you are a smoker you smoke too much, and deadlines to meet.

Pycnogenol® counteracts the increase in blood pressure caused by stress and it helps to prevent the clotting of blood, which may occur in case of stress and smoking. Business people may have to work in a sitting position (attending endless meetings) and have to travel a lot. Pycnogenol® helps against swollen feet and reduced circulation caused by that immobile life style. Intake of Pycnogenol® may increase cognitive function (improve ADD/ADHD symptoms), reduce the risks of stress and will prevent consequences of sedentary lifestyle.

Taking Pycnogenol is similar to taking supplemental vitamins, minerals, and herbs to enhance a person's functionaly physiology. Once every system is working perfectly and in unison, the ADD/ADHD symptoms "appears" to be diminished. Thus, "normal" cognitive functionality returns.

Pycnogenol® is available in the super oxidant product OPC-3. Yes, health professionals are likely to instruct patients to be compliant (with medication), rarely with intake of "high quality" of food. The higher the quality of food, the better and more it is bio-available to the body. Subsequently, less by-products and metabolic wastes results. For example, whole grain is better than wheat flour which is still better than white flour, etc. You get my point. Essential fatty acids support and promote the building of neural pathways needed for learning and sustained attention. Essential fatty acids are especially needed in those with ADD. Amino acids promote the production of various neurotransmitters and enzymes critically needed in brain metabolism. Amino acids allow smooth, balanced cognition and fluid transition from thought to disciplined action. Also, helps to reduce stress, frustration and cognitive overload.

Some fatty acid of interest are phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidylserine. Some common Essential Fatty Acid are Arachidic Acid, Arachidonic Acid, Caproic Acid, Caprylic Acid, Decosahexaenoic Acid, DMAE, dimethylaminoethanol Eciosatrienoic Acid, Lauric Acid, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Oleic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Palmitoleic Acid, Pentadeconic Acid, and Stearic Acid. I am mentioning the major essential fatty acid here for recognition purposes and would suggest researching further if you wish to have a better understanding of them. Otherwise, this discussion would be a biochemistry discussion and too technical for my audience.

In addition to fatty acids, amino acids are also important. They are as follows:
Calcium Pantothenate and Magnesium Aspartate for normal cell function.
Cystine to strengthen the immune system, reduce damage from free-radicals, repair RNA-DNA in the cells and assimilation of vitamin B6.
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) for normal inhibitory functions of the central nervous system.
Glutamic Acid to cleanse the central nervous system and improve overall brain health, attitude and mental performance.
Glutathione to helps detoxify the body.
Glycine to promote health of the thymus gland, spleen, and bone marrow and balance white cell production.
Isoleucine, L-Leucine and L- Cysteine to help detoxify the body and promote healing.
Methionine to support the liver's manufacturing of lecithin and help chelate heavy metals from the body's tissues.
Phenylalanine (DLPA) for improved learning and memory and to increase energy and decrease depression and pain.
Pyridoxine HCL (B6) to increase seritonin levels in the brain.
Tyrosine, an amino acid shown to increase concentration, decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression. L-Tyrosine is best used in conjunction with vitamin B6
Valine for increased cognitive function and smooth nervous system functioning.

Other supplements of interest include:
Ginkgo Biloba to improve memory.
Chromium Nicotinate to stabilize blood sugar levels.
Radix Heraclei to reduce frustration and stress and increase attentiveness and awareness.
Flax Seed Powder to provide additional essential fatty acids.
Gotu Kola to provide a natural stimulant.
Pycnogenol, and Pine Bark Extract, powerful antioxidants that promote increased circulation and oxygen to the brain.
Pregnenolone, the "Memory Hormone," to enhance short-term and long-term memory function.
NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) to improve memory functions and learning.Catechol to enhance the creation of new neural pathways for ease in learning.
DMAE, dimethylaminoethanol, is exceptionally beneficial in helping to eliminate brain toxins and increase the brain's potential to make neurotransmitters. DMAE also helps with mood elevation, improved memory and learning. DMAE has shown benefits against the disruptive and impulsive behaviors caused by ADD. It also shows improvement in treating memory lapses, Alzheimer’s Disease and some troubling movement disorders. Also referred to as a “cholinergic”, DMAE is thought to increase the levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is a chemical in the brain that raises brain powers.

ADD and Diet Part 1 (General knowledge)

A.D.D. people tend to have a higher sensitivity to diet (and to their environment) than their non-A.D.D. counterpart. When the ADD person’s diet is inundated with irritating substances (such as food dyes, food additives, environmental chemicals, pollutants, etc.), their ADD symptoms become variable, out of control or worsen. Moreover, if these offending agents exceed the body’s physiological capability to detoxify the offending agents, the ADD symptoms will decline significantly. This is the working notion associated with variable ADD symptoms associated with diet. February is “food” month, and I will address “food” as something we digest, fuel for the body, restorative substances for the body, dietary supplements (vitamins and herbs) and pharmaceutical supplements.

Let’s start with ADD friendly foods that are consumed regularly and abundantly to help our ADD symptoms. First, eat fresh food, not highly processed convenient food. Fresh fruits and vegetable would be an excellent food source. Nuts such as almond, cashews, peanuts, sunflower seeds, walnut, etc would be another source of food source. Snack on these food throughout the day. If you plan to eat, try to cook your own food from scratch, not the nukeable (i.e. microwavable) food if you can help it. Cooking is very easy if you understand the cooking principles and what are the food complementary relationships.

By the way, I created some pilot cooking videos (DVD) called “ONE PAN CHAN” sometime ago. I will reedit them for distribution latter this year. The concept of “ONE PAN CHAN” is simple. Everything is done in one pan; marinate, cook, serve in one pan. This is great for the bachelor (or the bachelorette) and was created for people with limited cooking experience. I structure this to be enjoyable and humorous. So, please stay tune for “ONE PAN CHAN”, the cooking series.

The fuel that the body needs is in the form of three major categories. They are proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. The major meat proteins include beef, pork, chicken, fish, and lamb. The other exotic meat proteins are wild turkey, venison, buffalo, ostrich, and game meat. The non-animal proteins include legumes such as peas and beans. Tofu (soybean products from Asian culture) is an excellent source of protein. Soybeans have been suggested to have breast cancer protective properties. (Food for thought question: When was the last time you heard about an Asian woman eating lots of tofu in their culture developing breast cancer?).

The restorative foodstuffs are the cofactors in the biochemical pathways that are sometimes used but not replenish. Biochemical cofactors could be vitamins, trace minerals, and various biochemical compounds. Some of these could be precursors for neurotransmitters. Some are essential amino acids, fatty acids, and enzymes.

The dietary vitamin is a billion dollar industry. There are so many types of vitamins and so many different brands of vitamins that I will leave it up to you to try the various brands and “daily requirements” to fit your physiology. The caveat is that look for vitamins that are the most bio-available for your physiology. If it works to you, continue to take it. If you don’t feel much benefit, then stop taking that brand and switch to another brand. This is a trial and error approach. I am not here to endorse any one brand over another brand.

Herbs are somewhat of a delicate matter and may lead to misperceptions of their benefits. Some may not believe in herbal benefits. If you don’t believe herbal benefits, I recommend you skip this section and move on to the next area of interest. Since our culture hasn’t been exposed to herbs like other “older” civilizations throughout the world, I would suggest you be familiar with the herbal practitioner. As a general rule, those who are practitioner of the ancient Oriental Medicine (Doctor of Oriental Medicine) probably would be a good source to seek herbal remedies for your particular needs. Doctor of Oriental Medicine practitioners are licensed. Their training is usually a 3 to 4 year graduate level studies after their Bachelor’s degree, nursing degree, or in conjunction with an allied health career such as a chiropractor or osteopath doctor. Do your homework and find one you feel comfortable with.

The pharmaceutical supplements are the laboratory synthesized compounds manufacture to “mimic” natural compound’s properties. This usually is not as good as the real thing. During the manufacturing process, the structure of the compound may not be identical to the natural compound and thus the effectiveness and bio-properties may be of less. For example, if the lab is able to synthesized Ginseng. The synthetic Ginseng may only have small portion of the real Ginseng’s beneficial effects.

The next subdivision of diet is the sequence of ingesting your food. The most appropriate sequence of eating is to start with fats and proteins to initiate the digestive process and to get the digestive enzymes ready to break down the food. In addition, the fats and proteins take longer to digest than carbohydrates. Finally, end with fruits and green leafy vegetable (salad) so that the roughage “pushes” the sticky fats and proteins in your digestive tract downstream. The roughage has a secondary benefit of scrubbing the digestive lining of debris to prevent polyp development. Thereby, minimizes gastrointestinal cancer. The simple point to remember is to eat fats and protein first, end with fruit and salad, and eat everything in-between.

Next week, I will go into detail about the specific compounds that are needed by our body to function optimally.

Breast Cancer - Body Symbology

What is BREAST CANCER?

Cancer in general refers to the unregulated cellular growth level. In cancerous growth, there is a malfunctioning check and balance system of growth and destruction at the molecular level followed by changes at the cellular level. The failure of the check and balance causes proliferation of the inappropriate development of cancer cells.

These are immature cells that have little opportunity to grow and mature to purposeful adult cells. Thus, they (i.e. cancer cells) “suck” the system (physical body) of the limited life force within the body.

Thereby, causing the person to be fatigue, weak and "not themselves" as the initial vague presenting symptoms of the pre-cancerous patient.

In light of this simple explanation of cancer presentation, what specifically is the function of the female breast as it relates to body symbology?

First, let’s evaluate the function and purpose of the breast. The purpose of the female breast from the time of antiquity is the supplying of nourishment to the very young. The process of giving to the very young is a noble obligation as a nurturing mother. It is her purpose and is expected to perform this sometimes unappreciated deed for the next generation to survive and procreate again. In order for her to feel worthiness as a mother, her nurturing and the giving of her milk must count for something.

If her nurturing does not count for anything, and she feels unappreciated, unloved, and not contributing to her “family’s” growth and well being, she will breakdown slowly. The insidious breakdown will likely occur first at the molecular level, then cellular level, followed by tissue level, and manifest itself in the organ system of the breast.

Thus, the body symbology working notion of breast cancer is the unappreciated dutiful experiences a mother feels after giving of herself and feeling her "milk" (i.e. nurturing) accounts for nothing.

Another related concept of cancer is the issue of coincidences associated with other events. Is the coincidences (or the collection of related data) or events that highly coorelate with certain patterns in one’s life? For example, consider the many studies suggesting that over 70% of breast cancer occurs in the right breast. Another fact is over 60% of the cancer patients have cancer of both breasts and is married to an alcoholic husband. Is the cancer of the breast related to someone who cares for an adult man and is sick and tired of taking care of a man? There's a coincidence of having over 60% of breast cancer patient with bilateral breast cancer who are married to an alcoholic husband. Is this just data or is it also a coincidence? Is this an event a statistical coincidence? Is this not reality? If you dig deep down into the patients' psyche, there are more important questions that need to be asked. In the process of interpreting breast cancer using body symbology, there’s a realization that the process of "getting" breast cancer is more important than the statistical data of breast cancer itself. Yes, each body part has a meaning and yes each body part has a function. Things that function has meaning. By inference, if something has a function, it already has a reason for being. As a culture, we will attach additional meanings that match that function. Breast as a functional organ is to give nourishment, nurturing, and love to others; if the giving is not appreciated, the cancer (or the chaotic energy) begins its parasitic relationship onto the body.

Here is a typical theme of cancer patients’ life. They feel tired, somewhat not themselves. They seek medical help; run some tests, and discover they have a lump in their breast. Further investigations with biopsy show malignancy. Mastectomy scheduled and disfiguring surgery performed. Sometimes the cancer metastasizes to other organs. If so, the patient usually die shortly thereafter.

In the women with breast cancer, the women’s nurturing, especially to a grown man, doesn’t seem to amount to much. They long for a meaningful life where their service to the grown man has significance. The worst part is that all the nursing in the world doesn’t raise the adult alcoholic. There’s deep resentment behind that. There’s inadequacy in nursing a man. The metaphor is that their milk counts for nothing. Their love is not pure enough; not stronger enough; and not good enough. There’s deep inadequacy within the woman. There is an underlining core of resentment against the grown alcoholic man for their unappreciated effort.

Cancer seems to feed on resentment better than anything else. If you could put resentment in a petri dish, you can grow any kind of cancer. You can keep cancer alive forever.

If you were to have cancer, how would you deal with it in addition to traditional allopathic medicine? On the psychic level, it works best with kindness, forgiveness, love, and touch. Visualization and becoming in touch with spirituality (not by being more religious) may enhance one's recovery rate from cancer. Sometimes, in the medical profession, the doctors sits across the desk and gives instructions to the patient about their problems. This results in a disconnect with their patient. When there is patient-doctor disconnect, the doctor is merely functioning in the capacity of a licensed medical pharmaceutical dispenser without the benefit of being a healer.

On the Karmic level, the etiology of cancer has consequences dating back to the time of antiquity. There are numberous past life negative karmic events needing accountibility and to settled out the "scores" in this lifetime. If done genuinely and sincerely, the cancer can not take hold from the person and will subsequently starve itself of its nourishments (i.e resentment, anger, vengence, etc.). These negative karmic events may have happened a long, long, time ago and not directly related to you. Don't take it personally! Moreover, the offender may have been a family member, someone of the same village, culture, or race. No one knows for certain the chain of events and the price of negative karma. However, a few will acknowledged that there's some inferences regarding the karmic level and its correlation with physical health. Therefore, the old saying "what we sow, we reap" is a simple metaphor describing the Karmic energy phenomenom.

I hope I have share with you the body symbology associated with breast cancer. If you have any symptoms related to your breast, I highly encourage you seek medical evaluation immediately. It may save your life and prevent you from receiving a disfiguring mastectomy surgury.

Websites of interest:
http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com

The "K" in P.E.A.K. Performance Program stands for Kinesiology. Kinesiology refers to the study of movement. In academia terms, it is used to describe a multifaceted field of study in which movement or physical activity is the intellectual focus. Physical activity includes exercise for improvement of health and physical fitness, activities of daily living, work, sport, and play; it involves persons with disability, injury or disease; and athletes. Kinesiology in reference to A.D.D. is about redirecting the excessive movements (“Kinesiology”) inherited with the ADD/ADHD person. Thus, the Kinesiology aspect is the fine-tuning of the one’s biomechanics and physiology toward accomplishing purposeful tasks.

Kinesiology has a different meaning across the pond in Europe and Asia. On the other side of the pond, Kinesiology is a holistic system of natural health care that uses muscle monitoring to communicate directly with the body. It can assess a person’s response to any stimulus. It draws on the principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Those who practice traditional Chinese medicine are commonly referred to as TCM doctors. They can evaluate body function through the muscle-meridian relationship. It can also establish connections between imbalances, put them in order of priority and determine the most effective treatment. These techniques restore balance and create sustain health for more effective functioning. Kinesiology also draws on and integrates other therapies and healing modalities and can be used as an adjunct to any therapy.

The people with ADD often have “misguided chaotic movements”. Some have a certain “stick-to-it” attitude toward their goals when they find their passion. So, as part of the PEAK performance program, the goal is to find that “inner passion” and work toward those goals passionately.

As a side note, the K could stand for Knowledgeable, Kind, and Keen.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://helpmyadd.blogspot.com/2006/01/k-in-peak-performance-program.html' title='The "K" in P.E.A.K.
