We may or may not experience these condition, but there are probably others in our family or extended family who do. We have the genetic predisposition, but our level of stress and family history will determine what additional co-morbid conditions/disorder we may experience. But these all need to be documented and do add to our claim for equal access rights.

Here's the last of the 3 parts to this 12 Step presentation. It gets more serious in this one. But imagine what the faces of the preachers in the crowd looked like--I still remember some. Not at the "Shepherds..." conference but elsewhere..... I almost got beat up by a pastor once who told me to stop this "12 step stuff." He said, "Your a Christian! You don't need 12 steps. Just 1 step, "Jesus!" I respectfully disagreed and this ADD pastor had a rage attack. ALSO..... A very famous pastor in Orange County, CA w/ a large and a whole movement across the county. Has a son who was an ADDer/addict and got divorced..... while pastoring. He found recovery in the 12-Steps, and his Dad separated himself from him and refused to support his ministry. But the boy grew a wonderful church that touched thousands in a So.OC city on the beach. I used to lead a 12 steps for ADD mtg there!

Jerry and Dennis are together by phone and record this update about their lives and the ministry of Spirit of Hope. Jerry shares some insights on "burn-out"---a dark step beyond depression. He reads a self-diagnostic list from booklet/article by Dr. Archibald Hart "Burnout---A Blessing in Disguise." Burnout is different than depression. Burnout is especially common among people who care for other people in some way. Many caregivers are parents or family members or professional caregivers. But this also includes people who become emotionally enmeshed and entangled with others. his is commonly called “codependency.” According to Dr. Archibald Hart, “A body system exhausted by overwork, pushed beyond reasonable endurance, and depleted of resources could become burned out. In essence, extreme states of burnout will comprise most, if not all of the following:
***Demoralization—the belief you are no longer effective in your life, work, or career.
***Depersonalization—the treatment of yourself and others in an impersonal way.
***Detachment—the withdrawal from all responsibilities.
***Distancing—the avoidance of social and interpersonal contacts.
***Defeatism—the feeling of being beaten and the loss of any hope that things will change or get better.
Remember, neither depression or burnout is bad. It’s the mind and body’s protective programming. It provides the opportunity to change, heal, and grow. Think of it as a field trip—a learning experience. Imagine what a caterpillar must go through during the transition to butterfly!

Two more Biblical characters w/ ADD are explored in this podcast. These chapters from the audio book "ADD, Christianity, & the Church" are about "Mary & Martha" and "The Woman at the Well" (one audio chapter immediately follows the other). Martha provides insight into the "super-responsible, anxious-worry-wart" type of ADDers. BUT.... she would never admit to being ADD! She's too busy picking up after and dealing w/ the hyperactive boys/men in her life. She's overwhelmed by all her commitments, duties, and fears. But inside she's empty and hurt. She misses the love and connection of nurturing relationships that await her in life. And she is also busy being ill.... She suffers from chronic fatigue, depression, headaches, auto-immune diseases (from fibromyalgia to lupus, RA, ulcerate colitis, et al.), or far worse. And "The Woman at the Well" an gifted and intelligent woman who has had multiple marriages and a less-than-stellar track record. Both women were encouraged and help by the Lord's love.

2 more audiobook chapter uploads from "ADD, Christianity, & the Church." These 2 tracks have to do with a common problem--especially with ADD/adhd men--it's the problem of anger/even-RAGE. It's the subtype of ADD Dr. Amen calls Explosive ADD. To those who don't understand it, life can be torture. Either hair-trigger-rage destroys lives and marriages, or the troublesome life of a child or young person is a living-hell for parents who don't know what to do with oppositional and angry kids. But there's medical help for this subtype and it is effective and life changing.

In these tough and uncertain times, I want to share a story that reminds me that everything is gonna be okay. This episode from my life happened on an a flight from California to Chicago in trip in the mid-90s (back when air travel was easier). The story "Michael's Stable" was published as a small giftbook by Spirit of Hope Publishing in 2000, but it was first published in Guideposts Magazine in December of 1999 as "Homeward Bound" (abridged/adapted). After the story was in Guideposts, it has been copied and shared by countless thousands on the Internet. The story is the same, but called by many other titles: e.g. Minor Traveling Unattended, Little Traveler, Traveling Alone, etc. Although no one asks for permission, it continues to be sent and even sold on some online greeting card sites. And in some cases, other people have claimed authorship. But I don't lose sleep over it. A wonderful message of love is shared and people the world over are blessed with hope and the promise of home.

When we ADDers are stressed, out of place, in a fog, overwhelmed, or whatever ... we know how tough it is to make progress or get anything accomplished. Why? At those times, the prefrontal cortex of our brain is not functioning properly. It can be seen in the concentration SPECT scans that Dr. Amen does. But the result to us ADDers is the loss of 2 systems in our brain: 1) Behavioral Inhibition System "the brain's boss" and 2) Executive Functions "the brain's boss."
