Hangover III : Coming Soon ?

Sequels have always arose substantial interest amongst us movie buffs. However how many times have we been disappointed ? I know I have turned up several times at cinemas expecting a swashbuckling sequel only to see my hopes squashed. But there were some select few sequels which did not disappoint me, the Jason Bourne episodes to name one.

Being a huge fan of Hangover I was thrilled to watch the sequel (despite history telling me otherwise). Finally when Hangover II hit the cinemas I was hoping it would be yet another fun ride. I do know many may disagree with me but I found Hangover II boring, sick & disgusting. It was the same storyline with different locations.

And today I read about the third instalment of the series being finalised. Financially, Hangover III was a runaway success for Warner Bros. It brought in $581m at the box office alone last year (over $100m more than the original), and that meant that a third movie was pretty much a certainty.

Now Warner Bros. is looking to have the third movie in production this year with an eye to release it in May 13th. This time, rumour has it that the movie is set in Los Angeles, and negotiations are underway to re-recruit Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the trio are asking for $15m apiece to make the new film. Assuming the deal is done quite quickly, Todd Phillips is also all but certain to return to direct, too.

Warner Bros is also reportedly bringing on Hangover Part II writer Craig Mazin to write the script for the third movie.

Here's what Mazin had to say about Hangover Part III:

I think the third movie ends with Doug staring at a row of crosses in a graveyard. It’s everyone – his wife, his family is dead, everybody from the first movie is dead. Somebody shows up and tells him his dog is dead.
As for the thought of The Wolf Pack losing another integral member of someone's wedding party, Phillips has previously said that his idea for a third film in the franchise would be something completely different by breaking the now familiar formula of the first two. Honestly, that's the only way I would really be interested in a third one.
While the sequel brought a decent amount of laughs, the jokes and beats are almost exactly the same as the first time. While that's certainly entertaining, a third film really needs to pull out all the stops and do something truly original to finish the series. What do you think?

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (2011)

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (My Brother’s Bride), also known as MBKD is a new offering from the Yash Raj Films production line in the form of a romantic comedy. The movie has Imran Khan, Katrina Kaif and Ali Zafar in the lead roles. The movie also marks the directorial debut of Ali Abbas Zafar. The movie was launched all over India on September 9th 2011. I watched this movie last night and I must say it did stir a few laughs throughout and kept the comedy going !

The movie says the story of two brothers Luv (Ali Zafar) and Khush (Imran Khan). Luv is based in the London and his younger brother is an assistant director in Bollywood. The movie opens with a bitter argument between Luv and his girl friend Piyali (Tara D’Souza). Piyali is frustrated with his lacklustre approach to their relationship and his laziness to life in general and the argument leads to their breakup. Hurting from the breakup Luv calls Khush and discloses that he broke up with Piyali and wants to get married to someone in India. Here Khush is entrusted with the responsibility of finding a right bride for his brother. Hence, starts the search on matrimonial sites and so forth for the right bride which leads to a host of hilarious and embarrassing situations for Khush and his mates.

The search ends when Khush receives a call from a rich government officer, Dilip Dixit's (Kanwaljit Singh) seeking Khush for his daughter Dimple (Katrina Kaif). So it turns out that Dimple and Khush have known each other 5 years before through a university party trip. Dimple agrees to marry Luv and thus begins the wedding preparations through which Khush and Dimple spend time together and finds out to their utter shock that they have fallen for each other.

Then the groom arrives in India and the wedding preparations take full swing and now Khush and Dimple are running out of time. They need to either accept the love for each other and do something to alter the situation or forget that they had feelings for each other. What happens thereafter is the crux of the movie. The movie is definitely worth a watch at least once. A good popcorn-couch movie to be watched with your partner !

Imran Khan is extremely likeable. One rare aspect about Imran's performances is that he gives very realistic performances and doesn't dramatize or exaggerate too much. It's the same with this film. Imran Khan has once again given a mature and realistic performance. Katrina Kaif is brilliant. She's the soul of the film. This is her best performance so far after Namastey London. In fact after veterans like Kajol and Juhi Chawla, she's maybe the only actress (besides Lara Dutta) who can manage to be great in comedy.

The movies music is directed by Sohail Sen and helps to develop an instant likening towards with a few remixes done in the likes of David Guetta style !

X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class is an attempt to reboot the X-Men franchise after the debacle of X-Men: The Last Stand when it was released in 2006. The Wolverine movie (X-Men Origins, released in 2009) did not aid the superheroes' cause as it had to be rushed to the screens after it was leaked to the public with most of its CGI still missing.

Thankfully, Hollywood does have a ready-made response to superhero movies that fail to make as much money as they should: Reboots. After Batman's turn under the direction of Christopher Nolan, it seemed logical that X-Men would soon follow suit. X-Men: First Class is the first such movie that hit the screen with the purpose of making us forget about the disappointment that The Last Stand was.

And the one thing that I must say is that this is a reboot worth watching. In fact, X-Men: First Class is almost as good as X2, which is the finest X-Men movie released to date. The one thing worth noting about First Class is that it takes us back to the origins of the X-Men and remains as faithful to the comics as possible for a Hollywood movie. It thus takes us to the time where Charles Xavier (played by a formidable James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) were still buddies and created the X-Men.

Throw in the always impeccable Kevin Bacon as the villain Sebastian Shaw, and you get a very solid cast. It's always refreshing to see a movie where the actors thoroughly seem to enjoy being there and appear to have researched their roles properly. In fact, even Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) makes a cameo in the movie, and is as hilarious as you can imagine.

Where X-Men: The Last Stand was confusing and anything but enjoyable, First Class is the complete opposite. It enjoy a fabulous pace and a deep and engrossing storyline. However, The movie does have a slight problem with literally rushing over several otherwise important scenes, but this is not instantly noticeable. In any case, it is understandable why they had to do this as the movie would have been too long.

One of the most surprising and welcome attributes of X-Men: First Class is the fact that the CGI scenes are in retrospect kept to a reasonable volume when you take into consideration that this is a superhero movie. What was thus one of the biggest flaws in The Last Stand is thus one of the best things about this new X-Men movie. Moreover, the CGI that has made its way into the movie is never over-bearing and is merely a tool to convey the action better.

This brings me to another brilliant aspect in First Class. The action scenes are superbly choreographed. It's not as exquisite as X2 when it comes to action, but this one also packs a punch and will please those action buffs that usually do not care about anything else.

I am Number Four (2011)

Turning comic books into movies is slowly becoming the norm in Hollywood. I Am Number Four is another addition to the already exhaustive list that's already been released in movie theatres. Its difference with other comics is that it is however more geared towards teenagers and can thus in fact be described as a "teen movie". This is an important thing to keep in mind as other comic movies are instead targeted towards a larger audience.

The premise of I Am Number Four is as simple as it gets and devoid of any major surprises. It involves a teen who gets send to our planet (because apparently, Earth is still the safest planet in comics in spite of all the aliens that get sent here) to escape from a bunch of bad guys. It's pretty much standard, except that the protagonist is the fourth of a cohort of such heroes, hence the title I Am Number Four.

With this premise in mind, it's easy to guess where this is going. A teenager acting all emotional throughout the movie, some fights that consist exclusively of CGI, forgettable villains, a quiet solid plot (mainly because it was not originally written for Hollywood), and all the usual mumbo jumbo that attempts to attract the always elusive teen audience. Throw in the usual retarded love story, and the package is complete. Obviously, it is very common for little girls from Earth to fall in love with dangerous aliens.

I Am Number Four could have been an excellent movie if it were not for a couple of glaring and very annoying flaws. Firstly, the pace of the movie is particularly frustrating. The first half of the movie amounts to nothing and could have been skipped altogether. The movie also tries too much to go the Twilight route with its love story and the protagonist's behaviour, which has radically been changed from the original comic. It's actually really hard to believe that an alien would act this way.

This leaves us with a movie that tries way too hard to be Twilight when it should instead have relied on properly transposing the comic to the big screen. It is hard to feel any compassion for the lead as he mainly comes across as a whiny teenager who would be better off dead. In fact, the only actor who actually seems to know what he's doing here is Timothy Olyphant who's probably wondering why he even signed up for this crap in the first place. The other actors should probably never be allowed to act again.

The worse thing is that this is only the first movie of a series. And knowing Hollywood, it's hard to image that the subsequent movies are going to be any better!

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days (2003)

I was a little hesitant to see this movie because I wasn't certain just what would happen and how it would turn out, but the reality is that it kept me laughing the entire time. The way both of the main characters attempted to avoid getting involved romantically while pretending to have a relationship was the most hilarious part. The movie was full of
action and suspense, making you wonder just what was going to happen next and just how they are going to accomplish their task.

Benjamin is an advertising executive who has placed a bet with his co-workers he can make a girl fall in love with him in ten days while Andie is writing an article on How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days. The two of them attempt to inter mingle their separate styles and at the same time accomplish the goals they set about achieving. There are many twists and turns in the movie that keeps everyone wondering just what is going to happen in the end.

If you're looking for fun and games and something that will keep you laughing, you definitely want to see this movie. It is especially funny in the end as we watch Benjamin following her as she drives away on the top of the bridge in an attempt to bring her back to him as he has discovered he can't live without her after all. While one might possibly
think both have accomplished their goals, the reality is it went in reverse: she was unable to lose him in ten days and he was unable to succeed in making her fall in love with him in ten days though it did happen in the end.

The movie has lots of laugher and fun though not something that is appropriate for really long children to see as there are hints of adult themes. Although I saw this movie several years ago, it is still available on DVD and would make a perfect movie to watch on a warm summer night or cold winter night with the fireplace blaring. If I had the opportunity I would definitely watch it again—it made that much of an impression on me, and not too many of the 21st century movies can accomplish that feat.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (2011)

“It all ends.” The posters for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 aren’t kidding. On July 15^th, the eighth and final movie in the Harry Potter franchise will be released. After that, the fans that have fallen in love with the series since the first novel was released in 1997 will have to learn how to live their lives with no more books to be read or movies to be watched. Until then, we can savour the last few days before the final Harry Potter hits the theatres.

So, what can we expect from the last film? There is quite a buzz surrounding the release of the movie. Fans of the books know what to expect, but not to the full extent and can’t be sure of any specific details that will be featured in the movie. Warner Brothers has been releasing teaser posters for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 since March 28^th and excitement has built with ever y new photo.

By looking at the images released, here are some things that we can infer:

Hogwarts is Back

- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 will bring us back to Hogwarts. The first instalment, released November of last year, took place in many locations found in the books, but the magical school of Hogwarts was not present during the movie. A very large part of the second instalment will involve the battle that occurs at the school and on its grounds. Many of the professors from Hogwarts will be a part of the fight scenes, as well as students that have been appearing since the first movie.

There have been 11 action posters released, with notable appearances from more secondary characters, such as Professor McGonagall, Neville Longbottom, and Griphook, the goblin who worked at Gringotts Bank.

The Trio Will Visit Other Locations

- While most of the film takes place at the school, there still will be scenes set in familiar locations. One of the banners released in early June shows Harry, Ron, and Hermione escaping Gringotts via dragon. It is also speculated that Malfoy Manor, which is used for Voldemort’s base of operations, will also appear in the film, as it did in Part 1.

Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is a War Movie

- There will be a battle and it will be impressive. Epic is a word that is thrown around so often these days, but the literal use of the term, (an event centred upon a hero in a series of great achievements), will definitely apply to this movie. Harry and the rest have been through so much over the course of seven years at Hogwarts and the finale will not disappoint. Images in the trailers and posters show Hogwarts in ruins. Students are shown dirty, bloody and injured, and the castle itself is crumbling, on fire, and looks like a war zone.

It Will End

- Stories will be resolved, mysteries will be explained, and in the end, viewers will see who will finally win between Harry and Voldemort. After all, that is what has been building up since the two first met, all those years ago. The journey has been long, but, chances are, if you find yourself sitting in the movie theatre on July 15^th, you’ve been with Harry since you first saw him underneath the stairs at Four Privet Drive. You’ve watched Harry grow up, and mostly likely, you’ve grown up right along side of him, and seeing the last movie will mark the end of the final chapter of the Harry Potter series. No more midnight movie premieres. No more teaser trailers released and immediately spread around the internet like wildfire. No more speculation on scenes included, character’s motives and actions, or complaints of details left out. So, we might as well take advantage of the excitement while we still can. And when it is all over, we won’t be able to say that they didn’t warn us.

Casablanca (1942)

First of all, if you have not seen this movie, I would recommend it to EVERYONE. One of the greatest movies of all time and definitely in my top 5.

Michael Curtiz, director of Casablanca, constructs a thrilling motion picture that can be summed up in one word: superb. The use of lighting and music throughout the movie provides a constant mood swing; scenes change from distressing to delightful with the quick change of a song. Different camera angles keep the audience intrigued and in suspense as this 1940’s romantic war drama unfolds. Perhaps the most memorable and remarkable parts of the film are the character performances.

The actors are strikingly exuberant even with the main character, Rick Blaine, having slightly monotone speech. The presentation of actors in Casablanca provides the body and soul for the film, bringing to life the movie’s plot and overall flow. Without the breathtaking work of Humphrey Bogart as Rick, Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa, and Claude Rains as Captain Renault, this movie would not have become the classic blockbuster it is today.
Rick Blaine (Bogart) is the owner of Rick’s Bar and an almost impenetrable shell of a man. The movie begins with and is led to believe that Rick is a completely neutral partaker in political war issues, but we later find that this is not entirely accurate.

Ingrid Bergman plays the role of Isla in a peculiar, mysterious type of way. The connection between Isla and Rick is obvious, when she first hears about him in the bar she is overwhelmed with intrigue. Captain Renault is an incredibly interesting character that is swept away by the talented acting of Claude Rains. He is a French captain, but he seems to be more interested in impressing the Germans than anything else. Given the year the film was made and the setting, there is plenty of justification for his interest!
The phenomenal acting in Casablanca has caused this colossal classic to become one of the greatest movies of all time.

While the film does show astonishing aspects in lighting, camera, and music, the main focus of talent undoubtedly lies within the actors. Without Bogart, Bergman, and Rains directing the overall flow and life of the picture, this film would not be the titan it is today. The script is written like a masterpiece and kept within the confines of a PG rating so it can be viewed by all audiences; and it should be. The final notation is to Curtiz, the director, who synthesizes this work of art even in times of crisis.

Casablanca is definitely a memorable movie that would impact any spectator, and it is recommended to be seen by all who read this. In a rating of one to ten stars, ten being the highest, this movie would undoubtedly be ranked at an eleven. I don't want to give away any plot, because the writing and acting is so unbelievable, so please go out and rent this film!

IMDb rates Casablanca (1942) at a 8.8/10 and is ranked #17 on their top 250 movies of all time.

The Dark Knight (2008)

Superhero movies are slowly being quite numerous, and 2011 alone will see a few Marvel and DC movies released with titles such as Thor and The Avengers being extremely anticipated. However, even these pale in comparison to the attention gained by The Dark Knight's trailer. Featuring an exciting cast of Christian Bale, who reprised his role as everybody's favourite dark knight, Heath Ledger as The Joker, Gary Oldman as Gordon, and Sir Michael Caine as the always wise Alfred, the movie never disappointed and was launched to worldwide acclaim.

Funnily enough, The Dark Knight is still underrated as many viewers have simply shrugged it off as just "another superhero movie" and another typical Hollywood blockbuster, albeit one directed by Christopher Nolan. The fact is that The Dark Knight is not just another action movie but is also a frighteningly good thriller. And there are various aspects of this movie that contribute to making it possibly one of the finest flicks of the last 10 years, and without doubt the best action movie of the same era.

Obviously, much has already been said about the acting, but it's still worth pointing out why this movie is so good in the first place. Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker is probably one of the most impressive supporting roles of modern Hollywood, but the other actors have also put life into their characters in an eerie way. Gary Oldman and Michael Caine perform admirably as you would expect from such reputed actors. Oldman deserves special praise for his portrayal, which I feel is the second best performance in the movie. Christian Bale makes for a great Batman, but the deep voice he uses while in his caped costume is sometimes unbearable.

The Dark Knight is most of all a visual prowess that combines unique ideas with breathtaking directing. Some of the stunts in the movie, such as the car chase and the scene in Hong Kong, are absolutely brilliant, even more so when you consider that The Dark Knight uses a minimum amount of CGI. Christopher Nolan has stated that he wished to make a movie that would not use too much CGI, and the result is absolutely wonderful.

These scenes are backed by a score composed by none other than Hans Zimmer. Although the soundtrack may be hard to get into on its own, the themes are perfect for the grim and dark setting of the movie. They all have an ominous feel that perfect captures the drama happening in Gotham City and are another quality addition to Hans Zimmer's outstanding repertoire.

Calling The Dark Knight one of the best movies of the decade would not be an outlandish statement. It indeed contains everything you would want to see in a great movie: brilliant actors, a fast-paced yet coherent plot, unique ideas perfected pulled off, and a masterful soundtrack. This is a movie you must absolutely own and the worst mistake you could ever make is to treat it as "just another superhero movie". The fact remains that it is quite underrated because it is a comic book adaptation. Moreover, while it does have an outstanding cast of actors at the top of their game, the fact that it's not about a single actor acting particularly moody all day long has prevented it from reaching the epic status it deserves.

The Hangover Part II (2011)

The main problem, for me, with walking in to see this film was high expectations because of the previous film being such a hilarious hit movie. "It happened again..." was a continued theme throughout the flick and even though it seemed like I had experienced this movie before, the movie was able to keep me entertained for the entire duration.

In the first movie, Doug (Justin Bartha) was getting married and his best friends take him for the night of his life in Las Vegas. After a troubling night the crew has to put together their broken memories in order to figure out the mysteries of the previous evening. The movie is filled with hilarious one liners from the entire cast specifically Alan (Zach Galifianakis) such as "You probably get this a lot. This isn't the real Caesar's Palace is it?".

The second film is extremely similar to the first film so much so that you may think you are watching the same movie with a different setting. The second movie takes place in Bangkok, Thailand, and that is where most of the filming takes place as well. The actors, while comical, seem to overdo their lines in many cases and one specific instance of this is Ken Jeong's character "Mr Chow". Of course, those who viewed the first movie remember Chow as an over-the-top character, but in the second film he acted as if he was trying too hard to be funny. The film follows the gang of Stu (Ed Helms), Phil (Bradley Cooper), Alan (Galifianakis), and Teddy( (Mason Lee) through the process of Stu's marriage to Lauren (Jamie Chung). After an extreme night that none of them seem to remember, the trio (Helms, Cooper, Galifianakis) embark on their quest to find Teddy who became lost during the mayhem of the previous night. To find out what happens next, well, you will just have to see the movie!

/Even while the acting and writing is not as high quality as the first movie, I would still recommend seeing the film if you enjoyed the first one. The Hangover Part II is rated "R" and I would not suggest it for anyone who does not enjoy raunchy "hangover" humour. On a comedy scale, I would rate it a 8/10 or a B- film. Not quite a "must-see" movie of the year but it still has potential to make you laugh for an hour!

Unknown (2011)

A man awakens from a coma, only to discover that someone has taken on his identity and that no one, (not even his wife), believes him. With the help of a young woman, he sets out to prove who he is.

Anyone who has watched Taken by Liam Neeson will remember his swift and subtle fights with the Albanian kidnappers. Before I embarked upon watching his new offering in Unknown, I was telling myself to not expect the same genre and hope it will be different. I was pleasantly surprised after the end of the movie when upon reflection I realised that it is so much different from director Pierre Morel’s Taken.

In Unknown, Liam Neeson plays the role of Dr. Martin Harris a researcher who arrives in Berlin with his wife Liz played by January Jones. The couple come to Berlin to attend a biotechnology conference where Dr. Martin is presenting a paper based on his research. However soon after arriving at the hotel reception he realises that they have missed a suitcase which contains his passports and other documents. While his wife speaks to the receptionist he sets out to the airport to retrieve the missing bag. On the way to the airport his taxi plunges into the river as the driver (Diane Kruger)swings the car to save them from a stray biker.

The driver, Gina saves Dr. Martin but disappears from the scene and he gets admitted into the hospital where he is in a coma for 4 days after which he wakes up with only fragments of his memory. He checks himself out of the hospital and goes to the hotel. He sees Liz at a reception and goes to embrace her. But she claims not to know him and introduces everyone to her husband, who claims to be Dr. Martin Harris (Aidan Quinn).

The search for who he is begins at this point for Liam Neeson. Will he find who he actually is? Is he Dr. Martin Harris as he believes to be or is he still shaky from the accident? A lot of questions to be answered yet nowhere to go for help, with no known contacts, no money, no ID, no place to stay he has to find a way out.

If I compare Taken and Unknown they are two totally different movies with different story line, in one Liam is playing an ex CIA operative who is highly skilled and trained while in Unknown he plays he role of a simple researcher who finds himself in a situation he has to desperately get out of.

The movie has been shot almost completely in Berlin, Germany and is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. I finally must say that Unknown did fail to excite me like Taken did. Maybe because I have already seen a host of such movie genres and it no longer caters to my taste but for any Liam Neeson fan its a good movie not worth to be missed

Vaanam is a Tamil movie from the Indian movie industry released world wide on April 29th 2011. Vaanam is a Tamil word which means “sky” and has an ensemble cast of Silambarasan, Bharath, Anushka Shetty, Prakash Raj and Saranya. Silambarasan nicknamed STR by his fans has been on a roll with rollicking movies and has not failed to perform with his latest offering. After watching his last movie “Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya” I have been eagerly anticipating his next movie and ended up watching it today !

The movie tells the story of 6 characters from different facets of life and how their lives happen to be affected by one persons action. STR plays one of the 6 characters as Cable Raja, a happy-go-lucky chap who is your next door cable guy (reminds you of Jim Carrey as The Cable Guy ?). He is also in the lookout for a way to make some quick buck with the help of his friends Seenu (Santhanam) and Ganesh (Ganesh Janardhanan) to be able to attend a swank New Years eve party with his girl friend Priya (Jasmin Bhasin). To get her parents consent Cable Raja has to portray himself as rich kid and does he do it in style ! So will he win her parents hearts ?

Saroja (Anushka Shetty), in Sulurpet, the Tamil Nadu-Andhra border is working her way as a sex-worker in a brothel while seeking a way out desperately. She decides to come to Chennai and start a business of her own with her friend. Will she be able to set up her business ?

Bharath Chakravarthy (Bharath) aims to become a famous rock star and he starts his journey with his friends, including Laasya (Vega Tamotia), to give live performances. His mother doesn't like the idea of her son wasting his life, so she wants him to go into the army like his father. Bharat leaves to Chennai against his mother’s wish with his friends to perform live at their first gig. Will they ever reach Chennai and perform live ?

Rahim (Prakash Raj) a devout Muslim whose wife Zara (Sonia Agarwal) has just been told that she's pregnant. At the same time Rahim learns that his long-lost brother has just been sighted in Chennai, and they both set off in search of his brother. Will they find Rahim’s brother in Chennai ?

Lakshmi (Saranya Ponvannan) and her father-in-law are trying desperately to save her son from the clutches of a moneylender in Thoothukkudi a village in Tamil Nadu. She and her father-in-law comes to Chennai to gather the funds to pay off the moneylender by selling her kidney. Will they get enough money to save her son ?

Does that sound interesting enough to give this movie a try? I would definitely recommend watching this movie and it is not because I am an STR fan myself !

Vaanam is also a remake of the super hit telugu film named Vedam

The soundtrack for the movie has been composed by the ever improving Yuvan Shankar Raja and does not fail to get you feet tapping !!

Exquisitely lensed in soft pastel hues by Yoo Young-kil, the renowned cinematographer who also created the sumptuous aesthetics of A Petal and Green Fish, Christmas in August is as delightful a movie as one could ever wish to see. Whilst nominally the film could be described as a melodrama, Hur Jin-Ho’s elegiac tale transcends any of the pejorative connotations of the word. Melodramas are usually the domain of the big gesture, the awe inspiring act, the larger than life sacrifices. Christmas In August is something altogether different; rather than try and force tears with over the top and contrived moments, Hur Jin-ho’s delicate feature is instead made up of a tapestry of small, intimate, discreet moments that add up into something much greater than the sum of its parts.

The 1998 South Korean classic stars Han Suk-kyu as humble portrait photographer Jung-won. His life, in many ways, is entirely unexceptional up until, and including, the moment he is diagnosed with terminal illness. Rather than kick and scream or cause a fuss Jung-won endeavours to carry on living his life with simple acceptance, remaining quiet to those around him about his condition. As Jung-won prepares for his final days a young parking attendant, played by Shim Eun-ha, becomes a regular at this shop and the two find themselves becoming more and more attached.

The power of Christmas In August comes in its restraint – what the characters don’t say, the subtext of their silence, is more powerful than any words could be. The episodic series of events that unfold are given as much weight by his terminal condition as they are by his calm, considered reactions. The moment Jung-won drunkenly spurts out his condition to his drinking partner the news that he is dying is met with a swift rebuttal. His friend believes it to be a joke and Jung-won doesn’t want to press the issue; he is determined to just enjoy the little time he has left with his friend even if he does worry there’ll be few moments like this again. It is only in drunken fear does his calm, placid mask slip. Aside from this one instance Jung-won never troubles anybody. Instead he undertakes a series of tasks aimed at helping those around him in even the smallest of manners. He painstakingly and stoically shows his father step-by-step instructions on how to use a video remote knowing full well he’ll have no chance learning this skill alone. In one extraordinary sequence Jung-won is shown helping an elderly woman come to term with her own death by taking her funeral portrait; he spoils her, makes her feel special and puts her at ease. It is a truly astonishing example of how Christmas in August manages to capture the sublime beauty in ordinary decency, the profound pathos in quiet dignity. It is an ecstatically humbling piece of humanist art.

The film is truly emotive but to call it a tear jerker would be misleading; the term suggests a pre-planned, mechanical attempt at directing audience’s emotions in a specific manner. Instead Hur provides a luminous, meditative film in which each tender and laconic episode is as beautiful as the next. The quiet moments such as Yoo’s camera catching the fleeting impermanence of the condensation caused by Jung-won’s breath against his shop window are emotionally devastating in their tiny elegance. Fans of Yoo’s work will remember a thematically similar shot in Lee Chang-dong’s Green Fish.

A truly life-affirming movie, Christmas In August is a film that deserves to be considered in the same canon as Groundhog Day and It’s A Wonderful Life as works that celebrate the best in human nature, as joyful triumphs. In the famous poem mis-attributed to Emerson success is defined as, amongst other things, being able to make just one person’s life easier because of your existence. In Christmas In August, Hur is able to show how a humble photographer can live a life full of success, away from riches and wealth, solely through his kindness. Jung-won is a success because he helped his father with a video recorder and because he provided comfort to an elderly lady. If there is a more important lesson to be learned in all of art then I have yet to stumble across it.

Limitless

A writer discovers a top-secret drug which bestows him with super human abilities.

Adapted by Leslie Dixon from Alan Glynn’s 2001 novel The Dark Fields, Limitless revolves around Eddie (Bradley Cooper), a struggling novelist who is yet to pen his first word in his novel. When I at first read and heard about the movie I thought it would be yet another Hollywood “style” gimmick !

The movie is written by Leslie Dixon and Alan Glynn who along with director Neil Burger was able to keep my glued to the seat through the duration of the movie. The key component of the movie is a wonder pill code-named NTZ. It unlocks the full potential of the human mind and transforms an average or below average IQ person to an intellectual level of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking combined.

Eddy is a struggling novelist who is quite close to losing his lady love Lindy (Abbie Cornish) who is distraught at his life style and lack of direction and success. During one of these days in the trash Eddy meets his brother-in-law, a black-market dealer who tells him about this new wonder pill called NTZ and what it does to the mind. Eddy gets one pill from him and swallows it and goes to sleep.

The adventure of Limitless begins after that one sleep ! When Eddy wakes up from his lumber he feels different. There on, its a charade of style, suave and finesse as Eddy transforms himself into a virtuoso writer, musician, politician, socialite and stockbroker. He gets back at Lindy and gets a meeting with the energy mogul Carl (Robert De Niro). Soon Eddy realises the hard fact that the quicker he rises the quicker and harder he will fall.

Limitless reminds you of watching the Jim Carrey starrer “The Mask” and “Wall Street” combined. Lead actor Bradley Cooper of the Hangover fame has done completed justice to the role as Eddy. Cooper takes a self-centred and debauched character and turns him into a likeable, sympathetic protagonist.

Buried

Paul is a U.S. truck driver working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it's a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.

When I watched the first 15 minutes of the movie it brought back my memories of watching Colin Farrell “stuck” in a public phone booth in the 2002 hit movie incidentally also called as “Phone booth”. I remember telling myself while watching Phone Booth that it would be impossible for anyone to better that. Well I was wrong and first-time director Rodrigo Cortés came up with an absolute master piece in the form of Buried.

When a prominent actor like Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal, X-men Origins: Wolverine) accepts to do a movie it has to be something and I must say I was not et all disappointed in buying the DVD.

The movie starts and finishes in a wooden coffin in its literal sense. The movie can make you feel claustrophobic at times primarily because of the lack of light within the coffin (off course where is the light when you are buried underground !!)

Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is a truck driver from the US working for a organisation called CRT. Paul is trying to make some money for his family and moves to Iraq despite his wife warning him not too. He wakes up at the beginning of the movie to find himself in a wooden coffin and with a faint memory of what happened before.

Their convoy of trucks where ambushed by a group of Iraqis who killed most of the drivers except him and buried him in a coffin somewhere in the desert. Incidentally whomsoever put him in the coffin kept a phone, lighter, flash light and a cask. Paul uses the phone to contact 911, FBI, CRT and his family in a race against time. Just when all hopes seemed to fade he gets a call, only to realise it was the man who put him in the coffin asking for 5 million “monies” by 9 pm or he dies.

In his frantic attempt at trying to escape he has to contact and speak to several employees in the state department only to be transferred through the frustratingly long bureaucratic loops. Air, light, movement and communication; never has the simplest things in life been the source of such insurmountable tension.

Ryan Reynolds has without any doubt portrayed the best performance of his career. Not many actors possess the ability to hold our attention on their own for an entire film — Sam Rockwell in last year’s Moon springs to mind, but even he had a robotic companion.

Watching the last 5 minutes of Buried was as nail-biting as five minutes of film can possibly be, but mostly because of the tremendous respect I have for the filmmakers who have achieved so much with so little.

Jumping The Broom (2011)

“Jumping the Broom”release in the theatres on 6th May 2011 and it did not take much time for the audience and the critics alike to slam the verdict. A charade of melodramatic moments in a 112 min movie was enough for the critics to slam it as a failure. However its not all that bad as it seems. The director, Salim Akil, a television veteran, handles the movie with suavity and restraint, which is a mixed blessing.

The story begins with Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton) vowing, on the morning after a one-night stand, to save herself for marriage. On that morning her car knocks over a handsome fellow named Jason Taylor (Laz Alonso), and five months later he proposes to her outside Lincoln Centre. Jason is an investment banker, while Sabrina, a corporate lawyer, has just been offered a big job in China, to which Jason plans to follow her.

Now comes the big question of how the wedding is going to be handled and organised. How well the director and his crew handle this part of the movie will hold it together. The main issue is class conflict among African-American families. Sabrina’s parents (Brian Stokes Mitchell and Angela Bassett), who are hosting the wedding weekend at their Martha’s Vineyard estate, are patronizing, upper-class individuals

By contrast, Jason’s mother (Loretta Devine) is a Brooklyn postal worker. She arrives on the Vineyard with a retinue of friends and family, including her best pal, Shonda (Tasha Smith), and Willie Earl (Mike Epps), the brother of Mrs Taylor’s late husband.

For a while various complications generate plots and subplots. Is Sabrina’s father cheating on his wife? Will Jason and Sabrina be able to remain chaste until their honeymoon? Will collateral romances take wing between Sabrina’s friend Blythe (Meagan Good) and the hunky chef (Gary Dourdan)? Between Shonda and a young man named Sebastian (Romeo Miller)?

The unevenness of the performances does not help. Ms Devine and Ms Bassett, as the battling mother-in-laws, are in some ways too fierce for the room, offering nuances of hostility and hurt that the movie cannot really handle.

The final verdict on the movie is that it is a one time watch, probably on DVD and not at the cinemas !

Synopsis: An action thriller centred on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown man and discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.

In 2009 a debutant director hit the screens with his movie ‘Moon’’ acted by Sam Rockwell which was a widely appreciated movie by critics and fans alike. Duncan Jones showed us that a Sci-Fi movie can still be made by using references to the 60s and 70s sci-fi movies. When Duncan Jones decided to direct his second movie Source Code it surprised many a fan about why he decided to go into mainstream sci-fi movies. Anybody who has seen the trailer for Source Code (me included) would presume that this movie is a basic mid-budget sci-fi thriller. However after watching this movie I realised its got a whole different bigger picture and makes it a good watch for the second time !

Jake Gyllenhaal as Captain Colter Stevens is an Air Force pilot and takes up a new job within a high priority top secret military technology based at the Nellis Air Force base. A bomb has exploded on a Chicago commuter train, and the military is using the technology to inhabit the body of one of the victims just before the bomb goes off. Captain Stevens undertakes his first trip into the past. The interesting fact is that the trip back in time lasts only for 8 minutes as the technology is only able to go 8 minutes back in time from the explosion. His mission is to continue to relive those eight minutes until he can identify the bomber and prevent a much greater attack threatened against the city later that day.

Putting him through these minutes over and over again is a slightly cold and cerebral scientist Dr. Rutledge, and his loyal-to-a-point assistant Colleen Goodwin, who is much better at empathizing with the poor captain than her boss.

Within the first 30 minutes into the movie you realise that Source Code is more than just a sci-fi thriller in the niche of movies like De JaVu. Its the story of how Captain Stevens adjusts to his new role to jump back in time for 8 minutes and be sucked back into reality again. During this 8 minutes in the train his companion is the beautiful Christina Warren for whom he develops an emotional interest.

During the course of events Captain Stevens wonders if he can also prevent the deaths of the passengers while also being able to identify the bomber. Dr. Rutledge does not believe it is possible as Source Code does not represent time travel but rather “time reassignment’', but Captain Stevens believes otherwise and attempts to save the passengers.

Will Captain Stevens be able to save the passengers ? Will Christina also develops love towards him ? Will he find the bomber ? Can the greater bomb threat be avoided ? Well, you just have to watch the movie to find out !

“Source Code” is a movie I will highly recommend. It’s good sci-fi that isn’t filled with special effects. It’s a good drama that isn’t held back by poorly-written characters who don’t have the intelligence or foresight of the audience cringing at their every move. It’s fun entertainment, with a fast-moving plot and a steady feed of interesting details and twists.

A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

There is always a considerable amount of anticipation when a movie directed by James Wan is opening at the cinemas. James Wan directed the first movie in the Saw franchise and hence Insidious was a movie that was expected to do well at the Box Office and the opening weekend gross is testament to that.

James has crafted Insidious in a way such that it cannot be classified solely as a horror or Thriller movie, it is a culmination of Horror, Thriller and Fantasy. The movie stars in key roles Patrick Wilson of the Watchmen fame along with Rose Byrne who was recently seen alongside Jonah Hill and Russel Brand in Get him to the Greek. The third key actor in the movie is Ty Simpson of The Next Three Days fame alongside Russel Crowe and Elizabeth Banks.

In the movie, a young family movie into a house to start a new life with their three kids. Josh and Renai believe this move will bring a whole new meaning and direction to their lives. The days pass by without any issue until one day when their son Dalton goes to the attic and scream. Hearing his scream the parents run up to the attic to find Dalton fallen on the ground from the ladder. The next day Dalton fails to wakeup despite constantly trying and is taken to the hospital. At the hospital the doctors declare Dalton to be in a state of Coma however, they are baffled by the lack of reason for his state.

Dalton comes back home after three months despite being in a coma. Since his arrival Rose starts to hear voices and starts to see strange people in the house. This repeats for the next few days and when Rose tells about this to Josh he shrugs it with nonchalance. Frustrated at being neglected by Josh, Rose throws one of Dalton’s bed sheets at Josh only to find a blood stained hand print on the sheet. This startles Josh who decides to move houses as they think the house is haunted. Hence they move closer to Josh’s mother Lorriane.

Unfortunately to the horror of Rose, she again starts to see and hear the voices and strange people. After this they bring in two men with a hope to solve the mystery. They discover that their house is not haunted but their son is !

What happens after that is crux of the movie and it has been made pretty well to keep the audience glued to their seat.

On Earth, Thor is rescued by a team of scientists led by Jane Foster and her boss Natalie Portman and Erik Selvig. Thor in his almost childlike behaviour to cause trouble and also developing a charm for Jane Foster. During this time Thor’s brother Loki finds out a secret about himself which incarnates the evil within him and creates a political infighting within the family. In this battle Thor must retrieve his hammer and understand what are the feelings he has developed for Jane Foster.What happens thereafter is the crux of the movie.

Battle : Los Angeles

Synopsis : A Marine Staff Sergeant who has just had his retirement approved goes back into the line of duty in order to assist a 2nd Lieutenant and his platoon as they fight to reclaim the city of Los Angeles from alien invaders.

Motion Picture Rating (MPAA) : Rated PG-13 for sustained and intense sequences of war violence and destruction, and for language.

Battle : LA contains a script which has been used and reused to its fullest by Hollywood movie producers and what remains to be found is if this movie is any different from the others. We have already been served with movies like Independence Day which had carved a special place in the hearts of any alien movie fans !

In Battle : LA, the world is yet again invaded by aliens who rain from the skies as meteors on unsuspecting humans around the world at major cities. They take down almost all of the major cities around the world and the one city left is Los Angeles and we cannot afford to lose LA.

Aaron Eckhart as Sgt Michael Nantz and Ramon Rodriguez as 2nd Lt. William Martinez are the two recognisable faces among a group of otherwise anonymous soldiers in the movie. As soon as they are introduced into the movie LA is decimated into a pile of smoke and concrete. There on they fight against the aliens in a bid to save whatever is left of LA. Sgt Michael Nantz, who was about to retire, is reassigned to a new platoon. The platoon, flown by chopper to the forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport, is being led by 2nd Lt. William Martinez. They are sent on a mission to rescue some civilians who are trapped at the police station within alien territory. They only have 3 hours to complete their mission and get out before the Air Force bombs that zone. The baffling question I asked myself was why would an alien with such advanced technology come for a simple fight with us humans !

Battle : LA can be very much related to any of the present day Call of Duty generation who enjoy their guns and explosions. The movie has been made on a B-Grade script with A-Grade cinematographical effects which would amuse and surprise quite many movie goers ! it's an entertaining but ultimately vacuous assault of explosions and special effects.

Fast and Furious Five

A word of caution before you watches Fast Five! If you enjoy watching a movie which defies the logic of physics or reasoning Fast Five is a must watch! One of the compelling reason which forced me to watch this movie was the hope of a possible fist fight between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel. Director Justin Lin did provide us with a fascinating sequence of fights between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson (more on that later !)

The movie starts smack where the last one ended. Dominic (Vin Diesel) is sentenced to serve 25 years in prison and is being transported to the prison while Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) along with a few of their other allies manage to free Dominic. The scenes that followed in the escapade was absolute pandemonium! The bus flipped several times on its sides only for a news reporter to state that none in the bus was hurt! Well, that did give us an indication of what is on offer for us !

This led Dominic, Mia and Brian to flee to Brazil and meet with old comrade Vince (Matt Schulze). He has a job for them which will see them stealing high performance cars from a moving train for a rich drug lord Reyes (Joaquin de Almeida). During this heist Dominic decides to keep one car as leverage if anything goes wrong in the deal. The stolen car happens to be a beautiful Ford GT40 which contains a custom GPS device that reveals the locations of a host of "money houses" in the city. Dom and Brian set about putting together a team of experts to relieve the drug lord of his ten million.
This team put together by Dom sees Fast and Furious franchise stalwarts Roman (Tyres Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Han (Sung Kang) and Gisele (Gal Gadot) return for yet another team and test a host of cars.
During all this furore we see the arrival of the most anticipated character in this movie, Federal Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), a tough hard talking agent renowned to always get his target no matter what it takes. Hobbs has brought along a heavily armed team with some heavy duty technology!
We are treated to a host of action scenes that may not be particularly original but they are shot without any of the mass CG enhancement or over editing that is blight on the modern action movie.
Fast and Furious 5 is loud and fast paced without falling into the usual trap of being simply flashy and superficial. It is easy to watch and if some of the stunts and pretty much the entire end scene are out and out impossible the story line at least makes enough sense and provides some context for the action.

Dum Maaro Dum

Dum Maaro Dum was an eagerly anticipated movie amongst all the Bollywood movie-goers. DMD would have carved a place for itself amongst the best in the suspense genre If it had held the excitement and thrill built up in the first half through until the end.

I must however ask you not to let the initial statement deter you from watching this movie as I was pleasantly surprised while watching movie. The angry young man, best portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan in the 70s has been brilliantly redone by his son Abhishek in DMD in the role of ACP Vishnu Kamath.

The movie is completely set in the beautiful coastal location of Goa in India. DMD is the story of several characters weaved into one single piece. Catholic boy Lorry (Prateik Babbar) wants to settle down with his girlfriend. Fate dictates otherwise when she moves to the US to pursue further studies. Unable to fund his fees for his studies in the US, he finds solace in the arms of a friend who introduces him to the dark side of society. A mule in the hands of players, Lorry is caught smuggling drugs. This one event snowballs into something much bigger. ACP Vishnu Kamath and team is given the prestigious, yet dangerous mission of cleaning up Goa of its all-pervasive illegal drug mafia. Pitted against the powerful drug lord Lorsa Biscuta (Aditya Pancholi), a corrupt police department and a host of innocent people trapped in the trade, ACP Vishnu Kamath has to prove his own conscience and of others wrong by completing the mission. He does find welcome help from the local DJ, Joki (Rana Daggubati) who wants to extricate the innocents, specially his girlfriend Zoey (Bipasha Basu) from the dragnet.

Punctuated with a soundtrack that moves from pulsating dance tracks to haunting Konkani songs, shot right in the midst of the teeming international tourist hotspots, Dum Maaro Dum takes you on a dramatic, thrilling trip filled with twists, turns, suspense... and a shocking finale!

A convincing movie of thriller genre in Bollywood is a hard-to-find variety until on 26th February 2010 I watched Karthik Calling Karthik. Starring Farhan Akhtar and Deepika Padukone, the movie has hit theatres worldwide simultaneously on 26th February 2010. The movie has received critical response from the toughest critics and has admirably come up trumps, thanks to the performance by lead actor Farhan Akhtar. The musical score composed by the ever improving Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio has become a chartbuster also in the music charts in India.

Plot > Karthik (Farhan Akhtar) is an introvert who lacks confidence in dealing with everyday life challenges and feels trapped in his average job that produces even lesser than average results. He is invisible to all with whom he works in the company and also is considered as the scapegoat. It hurts him more when the lady he has a crush on fails to notice his presence.

The lady is Shonali (Deepika Padukone) who works in the same firm and to whom Karthik has written over a thousand unsent emails with his affection towards her. Karthik’s boss treats him with a negative attitude and everyday he has to confront his boss's insults.

Slowly Karthik feels that he is a loser, and figures that if he could not make this life a success he might as well try harder in his next and hence decides to take his life by consuming sleeping pills. At this time the phone rings and when Karthik picks up the phone he hears a man who sounds like himself and has his own name. Soon, Karthik starts to regularly receive these phone calls and he starts feeling more and more confident. But who is this secret “Karthik” that he is talking to every night. Soon enough he wins back his job, his respect, his confidence and also Shonali. But, the secret phone call starts to disturb Karthik because it is the only secret he has between him and Shonali and he wants to disclose it to her. What happens after that is the crux of the movie.

After halfway through the movie takes a wild turn towards the dark side and it keeps the audience guessing who is the secret caller – a ghost? or is it the inner self? Watch it to find out.

The movie is extremely well made considering the director is a debutant and also very well acted. Farhan Akhtar seems to be improving his acting by manifolds and in several scenes were it requires superior acting skills, Farhan has actually done a lot more than expected and he carries the movie on his shoulder.

Martin Scorsese Planning New Mafia Film with Robert De Niro

While in Germany promoting "Shutter Island," director Martin Scorsese was asked lots of questions that have nothing to do with his new movie. One of those questions was whether he will make another Mafioso movie like "Goodfellas"

Scorsese first said that he had nothing more to add to the genre, but then revealed that he and Robert De Niro have been talking about "something that has to do with that world. No doubt about it. But it's from the vantage point of older men looking back. None of this running around stuff."

It is not clear if Scorsese is talking about a completely new project or if he's considering a sequel to a films like "Raging Bull," "Taxi Drive" and "Cape Fear."

Will "Inglourious Basterds" Win Best Picture Oscar?

Since the Oscar Nominations have been launched movie industry experts have been betting on who would win the Oscar for Best Picture this year. Several past records force me to believe that Quentin's Inglourious Basterds has an outside chance of rattling the Oscar table.

Although current betting states that "Avatar" is currently in first place, with the "Hurt Locker" trailing closely behind to win the coveted Best Picture Award but a surprise is always in the offing. This is what Harvey Weinstein had to say about Inglourious Basterds’ chances.

"We're going to win Best Pictures. This is the movie people love and it's Quentin's time. We are going for it and we are gonna get it," he told LA Times. "Look, best director may be a question, but we won the SAG award for best ensemble. Actors are the biggest branch in the academy and they love the movie."

Many believe that this is the reason why "Crash" was able to beat "Brokeback Mountain" back in 2006.
