St. Augustine and the DJing dilemma (Part 2)

Quite some time ago, I posted about the local scene here in Saint Augustine (and no, this was not the post about the venue I had a nightmare of an experience with)... and with the events that have transpired over the past few months, I'm thinking maybe its time to amend my post, and/or update my view of the local landscape (so to speak).

First and foremost, the fellas from Classic Blends have taken me in, and for that, I'm definitely greatful. Both Hu and Natural are great guys, good DJs, and stand-up businessmen. They've invited me to play multiple parties, given me carte blanche in regards to music selection, and generally been very supportive of me as a DJ, as well as supporting my radio show. For the first time in a long time, I'm attaching Subliminal Messages' name to an event, in collaboration with them, so I imagine that should put into perspective how our working relationship has developed.

I'd also like to take the opportunity to shout out DJ Josh Frazetta and Mardi Gras Mike for their support and friendship as well... and of course, Raggamuffin still holds me down, and gets my sincere and deep respect.

Now, on to the heart of why I felt inclined to write...

I'm not going to be inflating my ego here, but I have gotten close to a breaking point with the localized drama. These "DJs" around town, shooting their mouth off about being the "real" DJs in town in regards to their music, and "mixing" has brought out a seriously disturbing side of my personality. Honestly, I'm not an angry person by most definitions of the word... and I really do dislike BS like this, but I just can't help but to say something - even if it is strictly on a blog post that most people won't read. Even still, in keeping with my own rule of not "naming names," I'll briefly explain my gripes.

First and foremost: Keep my name out of your mouth unless you've got something worthwhile to say. Its the age old "if you don't have anything nice to say" rule.
You want to critique my mixing? Fine. You want to critique my radio show? No problem. You want to critique the events I throw? All good. You want to talk s*** about me to people I may or may not know, just to make yourself feel better about your lack of skill and talent? Now we have a problem. Oh, and when you call yourself the "only local source for electronic music," we've got some serious issues.

Now, I'm one of those people who believe that if you don't have haters, you're not doing something right. So, based on my own mantra, and the immense amount of 'hate' coming from these "DJs," I guess we're really making some waves. (And yes, I keep placing "DJs" in quotes because I feel like referring to these guys as actual DJs cheapens the term for those of us who didn't just give ourselves the title.)

Hu, Natural and I did an interview for a local publication last night. I'd like to re-iterate one of the main points of conversation: DJing is an art. Its work. It takes years of practice and paying dues. Its more than just grabbing some music and playing random tunes for people in a room. "Real" DJs spent years of their lives in bedrooms, living rooms, garages and basements, playing music for no one, perfecting their craft, tightening their skills, and learning their music. They've gone through thousands of dollars of equipment, and even more in records (read: actual records... you know, those things no one buys anymore), simply because they enjoy DJing... and not for people, but for themselves. I can't tell you how many times I've played a 3 hour set to an empty room. I'm sure my dog enjoyed it (actually, he probably hated it), but the only reason I was doing it was because it made me happy... Not because I expected to get a gig. Not because I wanted to get paid. Not because I wanted to be a star. I did it because it was something that I could lose myself in, and really feel one with the music.

These "DJs" expect to be top-billed and center stage. They want prime timeslots, and no one to tell them what to play or how to play it. Well, I'm sorry fellas, but there are still some of us out here who remember what its like to be a real DJ: to show up to a venue week in and week out, begging the owner or promoter for a chance to get just 15 minutes to show what you could do. I remember working for free for weeks or months, playing and promoting three to four gigs a week, hoping your time and effort would eventually land you something as simple as an invitation to come back or maybe - if you were lucky - a free drink.

Even more, I've yet to be impressed by these jokers. Seriously, you can that "mixing?" When you literally fade in one tune over a breakdown, you're not mixing, simple as that. Try a little something we like to call "beatmatching," then come talk to me. Let your mix roll for 8, 16, 32 or even 64 measures (if you even know what that means), and maybe we'll have some equal footing to stand on. And while we're at it, your software automatically syncing your tunes to the same speed definitely does not make you a DJ. Re-dubbing your tunes to the same BPM? That's cheating too... just in case you were wondering.

Do this: take two turntables (those are record players, by the way - quit calling your CDJs "turntables"), two tunes and a mixer, beatmatch them, create a quality mix, and while you're doing that, read your crowd and pay attention to the vibe. If you can't do that, please refrain from referring to yourself as a DJ. You're making the rest of us look like chumps. And while you're at it, you may want to reconsider that name, homie... a little tongue-in-cheek is fine, but you're actually serious, and that's just depressing. (And I'm not hating on CDJs at all... we're all happy we don't have to lug around 100+ lbs. of records, but the looping effect to cover your off-beat mixes just makes it more painful to listen to. Its called a "trainwreck," and you just did it.)

Yes, I am speaking to specific folks out there. There are literally hundreds of thousands of DJs in this world - and I'd say 80% or more are better at it than I am, without question... but you guys? You're not even in the same sport, let alone in my league, so go enjoy your pseudo-status as a "DJ," and I'll keep my head low, keep on my grind, and keep doing what I do... like it or not.

Come see us some time... We'll even give you a free lesson.

Music of the... since whenever I posted one last?

For a while there, I was doing one of these every week - and in a perfect world, I'd love to continue that tradition... but as we all know, its not a perfect world. :)

There have been a ton of releases since I last posted about them, but these are some of the things in heavy rotation for me recently:

First and foremost, I seriously can't get enough of this Eskmo LP on Ninja Tune. Bloody hell. I mean, its like nothing I've ever heard, and I'm all about it. (As I post this, the tune "My Gears Are Starting To Tremble" is on - LOVE IT, but too short a song, in my opinion)

If you're not familiar, Eskmo is the moniker of San Franciscan Brendan Angelides, who has released for Warp Records and Project Mu before being signed to Ninja Tune for the release of his self-titled debut LP. The album's bpm is about 85% "dubstep" (in that the beats are in the 70/140 range), with some ventures into "hip-hop's" 80-100 bpm territory.

One of the two major things that separates Eskmo's music from the norm is his extremely original percussion sounds; consisting of a combination of organic and syntheitic sounds, both glitched-out and straightforward... but the defining difference for me is Brendan's vocals. His voice is a bit creepy but still inviting, and have this ability to invoke a very emotional response without being typically cheesy. The lyrics are "abstract," but in as much that they are able to have their meanings taken differently, depending on the listener (and mood thereof, for that matter).

This one is going down as one of my picks for Album of the Year, without question.
Eskmo - Official Site

I've also been listening a lot to the album from Shobaleader One, "d'Demonstrator," which is out now on Warp Records.

Shobaleader One is a new musical venture from the production genius Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher. Shobaleader One is a band, but not your average band by any means. Tom puts it best in his explaination of the band here, and pretty much says it all with that little Q&A, so I won't go too much into the details.

Not surprisingly, I'm not as into the single as the rest of the LP, but I'm always excited for a new Squarepusher release, and this one came out of nowhere as well as being something completely different from his usual output, so it was a great surprise.
Shobaleader One - Official Site

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Ram Records head honcho Andy C's newest entry in the Nightlife mix series. Nightlife 5 is absolutely stupendous. They don't call him "The Executioner" for no reason. Seriously, Andy? 35+ tracks on one mix CD? And a whole second mix to boot?? LEGEND. For real. If you're a DnB fan, and one, if not all, of Andy's mixes aren't in your collection, I don't know what you're doing.
Andy C on Discogs

Ok. That's all for now... I really shouldn't be blogging from work (shhh - don't tell anyone!), so I'm off to pretend to do something productive.

A Musical Dilemma

A recent conversation with an old friend - someone who is deeply embedded in the electronic music scene - got me thinking about our (read: everyone's) tastes in music, and how they evolve as time goes by.

He mentioned that he had recently been into a specific genre of EDM, but his tastes were pulling him away from it; he just couldn't get into it so much now as he did in past months/years. This was definitely not a foreign concept to me, as I’ve gone through plenty of these phases before. Hell, there have been times that music in general has just been something I couldn’t find the right “groove” in anymore… granted, it never takes me long to get right back in, but its happened.

The strange thing (as far as I was concerned) was that the music he was no longer “feeling” was a genre of EDM that I feel is as healthy as its been in years: enormous diversity, new upcoming producers willing to try something new, and a shift in where the more “mainstream” output of the genre is headed.

He said he felt it was a tempo thing… which made me question if it might simply be overload. I mean, this is a guy who works with producers and DJs day in and day out, and I’m just thinking it’s the static BPM that he’s listening to that might be the culprit.

I wonder sometimes if we overload our ears with one specific genre of music, and that’s where these ‘genre funks’ come from. As I’ve said plenty of times before, I’m a total drum & bass fanatic. There’s something about that 170-180 bpm tempo that just speaks to me… but in the same breath, I listen to absolutely anything and everything, and try to make it a point to not over-do it with the dnb, making sure I have a varied diet of music in my day-to-day.

I’m interested because I definitely don’t want to see him walk away from what he does, but I also want him to see how healthy this form of music is, and how its evolution is opening doors to new fans and new directions for the music. I also understand the need to branch out and see (hear) what else is out there – especially with EDM in general being in such a great place right now, both musically and culturally.

Is this something that happens to you as well? Do you get genre overload? Is there a way you’ve found to snap yourself out of it, or is it just a matter of going through these phases to eventually come back to a genre that might have been “on the outs” for you?

Hit me up on Twitter or comment here with your thoughts. I’m very interested to know what others think about this “phenomenon,” and how they’ve overcome the same challenges when it comes to our musical tastes.

A quick note regarding yesterday's post

Wow. Quite a reaction from yesterday's blog. Honestly, I didn't expect to hear so many responses to it, and I'm torn as to whether or not its a good thing.
Allow me to clarify a few things, if you would:
1. I purposely left out names of all parties involved (minus Brian, as he has done nothing but been a friend and partner since I moved here) due to the fact that I really don't like drama. Believe it or not, I want to work at this venue, and I still think they have a ton of potential. Sure, my experience was unfortunate, but these things happen, and I think a meeting to discuss the issue and/or an opportunity to explain both sides of the situation could work wonders to solving the problem.
2. I don't believe in bashing other DJs, but sometimes I just can't keep my mouth shut. Blame it on my upbringing, being a Leo, whatever... but when someone is taking jobs away from people who have worked hard and proven that they deserve an opportunity, simply because he happens to be friends with someone, it upsets me. Sure, I've been given gigs because of who I know and not necessarily because of my abilities, but I've always been willing to give another DJ a shot to prove themselves - even if it means I make a little less money or get a little less exposure. We work in a very small scene here: I've constantly said that our sandbox is too small to have beef with another DJ. That being said...
3. I never claimed to be a great DJ. I've worked with some of the best DJs in the business (in my opinion), and I know my limitations and how I rate next to other DJs. I'm very humble when it comes to skill, talent and showmanship... but I also know what those things are and how important they are to our profession. I believe that DJing is a job. It may be one of the best jobs in the world, but its a job none the less. As a DJ, you've been hired to work. I think sometimes DJs forget that: playing music for an audience is WORK. You're not there to party - you're there to do a job, plain and simple. I've seen DJs who bust their asses for hours on end, pouring their heart and soul into what they're doing, but also being able to enjoy themselves... and a good DJ does just that. But they do it knowing that its work, not a social event. Sure, we all have a drink from time to time throughout the night - I'm as guilty as the next guy: asking for a drink before, during and especially after a set. But I don't get wasted behind the decks. And no DJ should. Its unprofessional and just plain disrespectful to the people paying you (both the venue/promoter and the audience).
I do appreciate all the comments, feedback and input, and believe me: my feelings on the subject don't necessarily mean that there isn't another side to this story. I'm more than open to hear from the venue, owners, or other DJs involved, and discuss the situation and come to a logical and mutually beneficial solution... But something tells me that may not happen.

So there's this new club in town...

I know its a rare occurrence that I'm posting new blogs now-a-days - and God only knows how many people even remotely care about what I have to say - but there's something that's been bugging me for a while now, and I feel that if I don't get it off my chest, it'll just make me bitter... well, more bitter, maybe. It'll be a long one, but here goes...

About 2 or 3 months ago, I got a phone call from a guy who was given my info by someone who had heard me DJ an event here in town. The call came in about 10:30 on a Tuesday night. Now I don't know about most of you, but at 10:30 at night, I'm not really in the mindset to talk business... but be that as it may, he wanted to talk about this new club he was opening, and having me involved based on my reputation locally (as well as the fact that I'm on the radio at least 2-3 days a week, I'm sure). So we spoke, exchanged info, and kept in touch here and there as the opening of the club was approaching.

Fast forward to 6 weeks ago.

I got an invite to go in and meet the owner on their first night. The club was beautiful. The atmosphere... the look of the place... the whole thing reminded me of being home (read: South Florida, for those of you who have no idea where I'm from originally). The sound system was a little lacking, but I figured that just had to do with growing pains, first night of working out the bugs, etc. That being said, there were two DJs going 5 for 5 (or so), and one of them was far better than the other - there was an obvious difference between the two that even the girl I was with (who is no expert) noticed it right away.

I spoke for a few minutes with the owner, who told me about their plans for the place, and what type of vibe they were looking to create, etc. He seemed to have a pretty good vision for what they wanted to do - and Lord knows we need a proper venue here in St. Augustine. The girl and I hung out for a while, and as the night went on, the place got pretty busy... especially considering it was their "soft opening," and they had done little to no promotion yet (most of the promo was basically word of mouth - news travels pretty fast in this little town of ours). As far as I could tell, the place definitely had potential, and I wanted in.

A about a week later, my friend Brian (Raggamuffin) was DJing there, so I headed back. I spoke more to the owner about coming in and playing. He told me the DJ they had in on Friday nights just wasn't cutting it, he wanted to bring someone else in, and basically offered me the night. Of course, I accepted graciously - I mean, what DJ worth their salt turns down a Friday night residency? He said we'd be a go for that Friday (it was Sunday night that we spoke). It goes without saying, but I was amped. It had been a while since I held a residency - I'd been playing gigs here and there, and still doing Subliminal Messages every week - and I was excited to get back into the swing of things. When we spoke, I explained to him that the DJ he heard on our local pop station was not the DJ he'd get on Friday nights. Sure, I'd play hits - I know this town isn't ready for DnB and dubstep on Friday night - but I'd be playing remixes and mashups... basically "party music," but not the radio versions. He said that was exactly what he wanted, but also asked if I could throw a little promo mix together for him, just so he knew what to expect on Friday. I figured that wasn't asking too much - even though I have 5 studio mixes and over 3 years of radio show archives on my website he could've checked out - so I threw together a 45 minute, one-take mix for him to download and listen to. I emailed him a link on Wednesday night, and asked him to call me once he gave it a listen.

Let's jump to Friday... after I had promoted the hell out of me playing there via Subliminal Messages, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

I called him around lunchtime to check in, make sure everything was still as we discussed, as I hadn't heard anything from him since we spoke that previous Sunday. Voicemail. I called again when I was on my way home from the radio station (around 4:30). Voicemail. Then, I called Brian (Ragga) to ask him if he'd be willing to meet me at the club a little early to soundcheck, as I wanted to be sure that the setup was ready to go. Of course, he said he would, so we planned to meet there around 7. I had not even put my cell phone back in my pocket when it rang: the club owner was finally calling me back.

He was calling to let me know we were going to push my gig to the next week... at 6pm the night I thought I was supposed to be DJing. He told me he had booked another DJ to play that night. I informed him that I'd been promoting it all week, talked about it on my radio show, had a ton of callers who asked for details and made plans to come out, and also had a bunch of my friends who were planning to head out there for their first time - because I was supposed to be the DJ. Long story short: he called the other DJ who he'd double-booked me with, and the two of us agreed to split the night, and take a little less money than we'd both negotiated.

I got to the club at 7 to soundcheck... the DJ booth was (for lack of a better term) a complete clusterfuck. The CDJs and mixer that I was told would be there had been unplugged and moved off to the side, and the other DJ had set up two 1200s and his own mixer, plugged in to his Serato (which, of course, was what I was planning on using, but on my laptop with my own music - I had planned on playing 4-5 hours, remind you). Unfortunately, the DJ booth was an afterthought when the owners renovated the building, so the turntables were picking up massive vibrations from the subs, and Serato wouldn't run correctly. After attempting to troubleshoot the issue, we decided it would just make more sense to scrap his 1200s and re-plug in the CDJs. at almost 8:30 (doors scheduled to open at 9). So in a massive hurry, Ragga and I re-wired the booth for the CDJs, with barely enough time to have music on when the first few people were coming in. It should go without saying that I had no plans to be there since 7, so I was still in my work clothes, and without some of the things I always have with me when I DJ (sweat band, towel, water bottle, etc.)... Luckily, I had my laptop and my headphones in the car. I should also mention that I hadn't eaten lunch or dinner that day. The other DJ said he was going to go home, shower and change, and he'd be back "in a little while." He was kind enough to offer to bring me back some food and a bottle of water, and I took him up on it.

2 hours later, he returned. It was a welcome sight. At that point, I just wanted to slam down some food, and smoke a cigarette... but the other DJ forgot to inform us that he'd never played on CDJs and had no idea how they worked (which I found a little tough to believe), so he was going to "let" me play the whole night. Mixed feelings aside, I'm a professional, so I just kept on doing my thing.

Around 10:45-11pm, one of the other owners came into the booth. There were probably 50-75 people there at this point (in a club that easily packs in 500), and he just wanted to BS for a minute, make sure I was doing ok and find out if I needed anything - a rare thing for an owner to do, but when your owners are also managers/promoters, I figured it was a nice gesture.

About 10 minutes after that, the "head of security" came into the booth (a guy I'd never seen before), telling me that I "need to get people dancing." Now, basic psychology (and years of experience doing this) told me that you can't get 100 people dancing at 11 o'clock when the club appears to be more than half empty... he "suggested" I start playing hip-hop, so I did. A number of hits from Pharcyde, KRS-One, Ludacris, Jay-Z and even Ying-Yang twins later, still nothing... a few girls bouncing around a bit, but nothing too major. Then, the security guy came back and told me I had to get people dancing and I needed change it up... not necessarily what I want to hear from a security guard. 10 minutes later, another "owner" (yet another person I'd never seen before) came into the booth and, when I was in the middle of a mix - headphones on, hands on the mixer/CDJ - starts tapping me on the shoulder. He told me to play "dance music." So I transitioned out of hip-hop and into (no joke) "Boom Boom Pow." I figured it doesn't get much more "dance music" than that. Not even two songs later, the "owner" is back in the booth - again, tapping me on the shoulder during a mix - and says, "This isn't dance music. This is like hip-hop rock techno shit. You gotta do something else." I was playing a remix of "Birthday Sex." Really?

At this point, it's about 11:45 and I'd venture that there was 150-200 people there... with about 40% of them moving to the music. Not a bad ratio considering how this town is (read: not lot of dancing to be found). The "owner" is now hovering behind me, watching over my shoulder - one thing almost every DJ will tell you is not a comfortable position to be in... especially in a booth this size. He keeps telling me I need to get people dancing, to which I reply, "I've played house, breaks, b-more, electro, and hip-hop... there's not much else I can try at this point. Just let the alcohol do it's job. Give it time." He doesn't.

Around 12:30, he comes back into the booth with "his boy," the DJ who - according to the original owner I had been dealing with - wasn't cutting it, and he proceeds to tell me he's going to take over. Problem being that at this point, I've got a pretty decent group gathered on the dancefloor, and people have begun streaming through the doors... I had just started to stop holding back and had begun to play my go-to gems in my library and slamming them with the stuff that blows up the dancefloor.

But, I came to find out, the equipment I was playing on didn't belong to the club, but the DJ that was going to take over - and we all know how badly things can go from here: if I were to tell him to piss off, that I was booked, its my night, and I was going to finish it out, he could've proceeded to unplug the equipment and take it away - it was his, after all. So, tired and frustrated, I simply gave up. I spun in my last tune - which killed, by the way - and started packing up.

Never, in my 12 years of DJing in a club environment had I ever been "kicked off" the decks. I've played plenty of "opening" slots - for acts like AK1200, Icey and Dieselboy to name a few - and I know the difference between playing for an hour and playing all night, opening compared to closing, etc., but I had never warmed up a crowd for 3+ hours to have a DJ come on (read: take over) and play the same type of music I was playing!

Worst of all, this guy is not a good DJ. His mixes are sub-par at best, his track selection has a lot to be desired, and he's got no flow whatsoever. On top of all that, he's not well liked - by DJs or by partygoers. He's known to be shady. He's known to act like a rock star. Seriously dude, you're not in a rap video: the bottles of champagne in the DJ booth? Not a good look. (And definitely not a good thing when you spill a bottle on the main mixing console for the club... well done, buddy.)

When I left the booth (and proceeded to take full advantage of my bar tab), I got nothing but compliments on my set, and was asked more than I care to remember why I wasn't playing anymore - especially now that the place was packed, and was getting complaints about the music and mixing from the guy who took over. It was just one of those nights...

A week later, I was asked by another local promoter/DJ to come out and play a set at his Friday night weekly - and as I hadn't gotten any calls back from the club where I was supposed to be a Friday night resident - I took it... and absolutely smashed the place.

I tried for about two weeks after this whole debacle to be in touch with the original guy I spoke with - the one who sought me out and I had been dealing with exclusively until the night of the gig - and I still haven't gotten a phone call, email, text message, or anything else back from this guy. Ragga was doing Sunday nights there, and come to find out, this past Sunday, Ragga shows up to play and no one is even there. The doors are locked, lights are off, and no one called to tell him they'd cancelled his night. I've also been told that they were a no-show on Tuesday night as well - which they'd been promoting as our only local "Latin Night." There have also been rumors flying around town about the club pulling some other shady business that I won't repost here, as I can't speak to the validity of the accusations.

What I can tell you is this: I lived in South Florida for 25+ years, and worked as a DJ for 10 of those, and never had anything close to the bad experience I've had here. Maybe I was spoiled. Maybe I'm over-thinking it. But maybe I'm not. Maybe I'm just a DJ who loves music, loves to play, and wants to work... and I guess that makes me a magnet for the few guys that give our scene and our industry a black eye.

Or maybe not. I guess the future will tell... but hopefully it doesn't get interrupted in the middle of a mix to be told what to do by someone who has no idea what they're talking about... and then can't get a call back to save its life.

DISCLAIMER: If you're reading this and feel like any or all of it is directed at you, you're probably right... but I'm really a pretty nice guy deep down. All it takes is a phone call to make things better - or at least start the healing process. Just sayin.

As part of my job, I have Google News on my monitor all day. I'm constantly checking the "pop culture" stories for stuff to talk about, and searching out recent articles/posts on the artists we air. Of course, in-between that, I'm reading articles that are a bit more relevant to me: technology, underground music, and other assorted things.

Today, I came across a sad story about a 15 year old girl who died of a drug overdose after attending the Electric Daisy Carnival stop in LA (for those of you not familiar with EDC, its one of the biggest electronic and underground music events in the world: this year's LA EDC featured acts like Lil Jon, Steve Aoki, Deadmau5, will.i.am, Moby, BT, Dieselboy, Andy C, 12th Planet and a ton of others). The article refers to the show as a "rave," which is one of the most disliked words in the vocabulary of electronic music fans like myself. The word has always carried with it the assumption of illegal and illicit activity that has plagued our scene for years.

I've often been referred to as a "raver," and I despise it... mainly because when that word gets thrown around, the immediate image of an illegally promoted, all-night party, filled with teens and twenty-somethings abusing drugs, listening to deep trace all night come to the majority of peoples' minds... and I'm all but one of those things: admittedly, I am in my twenties.

Now don't get me wrong, I do feel bad for this girl and her family. Fifteen is way too young for someone to get taken from this earth, and I'm sure her family is utterly devastated by her loss. But lets not forget that this event had an attendance of over 180,000 people, and only two (yes, two!) people have been reported to be brought to the hospital for drug-related reasons. Granted, the minimum age for entry was 16, so there was obviously some wrong-doing on the part of the venue and/or security staff, but underage partiers get in just about anywhere: fake IDs, slipping past security, having an insider to get you in - we've all been there.

And of course, the vast array of music, artists, and unbelievable turnout (and lack of violence) are not covered in the [mainstream] press; only the tragic story of this girl's OD. Also, EDC is a travelling festival, not a rave.

Am I the only one who gets upset by seeing stories strictly focused on the negative side of our scene? Have I missed something here?

Why isn't the music and artists involved getting features written about them? Why can't we focus on the fact that 'underground' music is no longer underground thanks to events like this?

I always find myself apologizing for my lack of posting, and for that, I am truly sorry.
Something always comes up, or when I have the desire to blog, the timing is never right. Now is a great example: I get the desire to blog, but I need to get to bed (I know tomorrow is going to be a LONG day).
I promise I'll post something soon - even if it's just the archive of my most recent Subliminal Messages show.
Till then...
-S

There's been a mssive lack of blog posts on my part, and for that I apologize. But I have been a bit busy recently, so I'm considering that a valid excuse.

For those of you who are casual readers, and not just friends who read this blog simply to appease me, you may or may not know that I'm a professional radio guy who works for two stations here in the Jacksonville area. One, 95.1 WAPE (The Big Ape), is the #1 hit music station in Jacksonville, and the other is 88.5 WFCF (Flagler College Radio) - who is kind enough to continue to let me broadcast my on-again-off-again passion project, Subliminal Messages.

Subliminal Messages was my very first radio show, originally aring in 1997 on WKPX-FM in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The show has always focused on electronic music (in all forms), and has aired on and off on both FM and Internet radio for years. Now, its back again after a 10 month hiatus on WFCF.

More info on the show can be found at SubliminalMessagesRadio.com, but I wanted to share last week's show archive here on the blog (and I'll continue to do so every week, hopefully getting the chance to make other random posts here between shows):

Subliminal Messages - 11 Feb 2010 (2hrs 30min, 138MB) [right-click and "Save As..."]

Tracklist:
Grey Granite x Illy MC - The Final Countdown
MSTRKRFT feat. N.O.R.E. - Bounce (Felix Cartal Remix)
Steve Angello and Laidback Luke - Show Me Love (AC Slater Remix)
The Prodigy - No Good (Spectre Bootleg)
The Prodigy - Breathe (David Guetta Bootleg)
Cool Kids - Miami Beach (Hydroz Metro-Dade Bass Remix)
Fresh Celeste & M-4 SERS - Give It All to Me (DJ Icey's Boom Chk Mix)
Noisia - B.R.U.L.
The Chemical Brothers - Saturate (Stanton Warriors Remix)
Faithless - Sun to Me (Alex Morph Remix)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps (Elite Force Re-Fix)
X-Press 2 - Lazy (Norman Cook Remix)
Trouble Andrew - Chase Money (Innerpartysystem Remix)
Emika - Deep the Other (Scuba's Vulpine Remix)
MJ Cole - Sincere (Nero Remix)
Dan le Sac vs. Scoobius Pip - Thou Shalt Always Kill (Vaccine Remix)
Ooah - Heat Up The Night
Prime Cuts ft.
Enjoy! And, as always, feedback is welcome and greatly appreciated!!

New Music Tuesday (2/2/10)

My apologies for not updating in a while...

I love Tuesdays - always have - only for the simple fact that Tuesdays mean new music.

Today is an especially exciting Tuesday for me as a fan of BT. His new album, These Hopeful Machines, drops today, and I strongly recommend picking it up... The guy is undoubtedly one of the most talented musicians in the world of 'electronic music,' and he proves it again with this new double-disc. His production quality is second to none, and the guy really takes pride in his work. He's a prolific musician: scoring movies like Monster and Stealth, while still making dancefloor-oriented stuff and intricate electronic compositions like This Binary Universe (and I don't want to hear the argument that he produced for N*Sync, because "Pop" was probably their best song ever).
These Hopeful Machines is a testament to everything he can do - from rocking dancefloors with tunes like "Rose of Jericho" to plain rocking on "Forget Me" - and holding true to his continuing refinement of sound and texture. Go, purchase, support, and enjoy.

BT - These Hopeful Machines (iTunes) This link is for the "Remixes" version, including both CDs (mixed) and remixes and edits of the singles.
BT Official Site

Hadouken!'s full-length, For The Masses, also finds its release today. Produced by Noisia, the album is a hard-hitting, tightly wound electro-rock-rap hybrid (I'm not sure of a better way to describe it) that's sure to make a mark similar to The Prodigy's Fat of the Land. As a big-time Noisia supporter, Hadouken! got my attention simply by having the trio on as producers, but I was impressed by the style and delivery of the LP as well.
This one may not be for everybody, but if you want to try something new that still holds a bit of familiarity to it, this should be right up your alley.

Rob Zombie also makes his return today with Hellbilly Deluxe 2. I've been iffy about his solo work, with only a few of his tunes (post-White Zombie) finding their way into my library, but from the few bits of this record I've heard, I'm willing to give it a full listen. Rockers and Zombie fans should definitely get their fill of heavy with this one.

Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe 2 (iTunes)
Rob Zombie Official Site

Finally, Lil' Wayne's Rebirth finally hits shelves today... and upfront I'll say that all I've heard from this was "Prom Queen" and maybe 30 seconds of clips from the LP. With that out of the way, I'm not sure whether or not I really want to listen to this. I'm not completely sold on Weezy: yes, he makes hit records, and yes, hes stepping out on this by making a "rock" album, but what rapper has ever done that well? Beyond Aerosmith and Run DMC teaming up for "Walk This Way," and Public Enemy and Anthrax doing "Bring the Noise," I haven't heard many successful (or decent) attempts at bridging the divide.
Working in Top 40 radio, I'm going to give this one a shot - really - but I'm going in with pretty low expectations.

Lil' Wayne - Rebirth (iTunes)
Lil' Wayne Official Site

Heading to your local shop to pick anything specific up today? Post it in the comments, and I'll check it out.

Music of the Week (1/9/10)

Another year passes, and we find ourselves in a brand new decade. 2010 is upon us, and that means... well, the same thing every new year means: new stuff!

It's been a fairly hectic year already, and I'm sure it'll continue to be the same. But luckily, the music that has already dropped is a precursor to some great things this year. That being said, let's get started.

I haven't discussed it much on this blog (I'm sure I will eventually), but I'm an admitted sci-fi geek. I love both Star Wars and Star Trek (even though some might call that blasphemy), and most things sci-fi are right up my alley. I was really into the Battlestar Gallactica TV show, and am one of the few people I know who was actually ok with the end of the series. I've seen The Plan, and watched the pilot of SyFy's new BSG spin-off series, Caprica, which I think has the potential to be a really interesting show. Apparently, so do the folks at XLR8R, Pitchfork and Create Digital Music.
They've released a free compliation entitled "Music For Our Future: A Special Compliation Inspired by the SyFy Original Series, Caprica." The comp features some really great things you may or may not have heard yet from artists like L'usine, The Field and Richard Devine. Its free, its awesome, and it ties in with Caprica, so its got my recommendation.
V/A - Music For Our Future: A Special Compilation Inspired by the SyFy Original Series, Caprica (via RCRD LBL)

Hate on Kanye West all you want, but I'm still a fan. Sure, he's made some ridiculous comments, interrupted America's sweetheart, Taylor Swift, at the VMAs, makes questionable choices in fashion and women, and has generally made people hate him, but you can't argue that the guy's not talented... and he keeps working and pumping out hits.
VH1 Storytellers picked up where MTV Unplugged left off (considering MTV never even airs music videos anymore), and in my opinion, does a bit of a better job by letting the artists talk a bit about what inspired some of thier stuff, as well as giving them the stage to perform it live. Kanye is the next artist to do a Storytellers show, and it's hit the shelves in dual CD+DVD release this past week. Sure, he's autotuned, but every track of 808s and Heartbreak was autotuned, so stop whining.
Kanye West - VH1 Storytellers (Amazon.com link)

In 2001, Adam F released Kaos: The Anti-Acoustic Warfare, and caught a lot of people off guard by transitioning from being a renound drum & bass producer to working with some of the biggest names in hip-hop at that time. The album was pretty damn good too. Adam did some things that really infused the two sounds, and opened the doors for other producers to make the jump as well (Chase + Status' working with Jay-Z and Rhinanna would be a great example). Kaos was remixed by some of the biggest names in the DnB scene and released as Drum and Bass Warfare: The Remixes, making for a whole other album of smashers for the DnB purists among us.
Now, he and Horx have re-vamped one of the tunes, Shut The Lights Off featuring Redman (which originally appeared as "Smash Sumthin" and remixed by both Roni Size and Bad Company UK), which won't be too familiar even if you owned either of the Kaos albums. The tune has a house vibe, and could work well in a club atmosphere, but also comes with a killer mix from Adam F and Sigma that's been rocking dancefloors, as well as a remix from dubsteppers Caspa & Trolley Snatcher. The variety alone is well worth the price.
Adam F - Kaos: The Anti-Acoustic Warfare (Amazon.com - Import only) / Drum and Bass Warfare: The Remixes (iTunes)
Adam F & Horx - Shut the Lights Off (f/ Redman)

When Jay-Z dropped The Black Album, he also released the acapellas to the world for remixers to go wild with. Dangermouse's "The Grey Album" was the biggest and most successful hit of them all (mashing the acapellas with beats sampled from The Beatles' White Album - and causing a world of controversy along with it), but there was also The Purple Album (beats sampled from Prince), The Silver Album (with RJD2 beats), The Brown Album (with original production by Kev Brown), and Black is Back! (produced by 9th Wonder) among a whole host of others - including one I remember called The Double Black Album, placing Jay's vocals over Metallica... which I never was able to make it through.
Just when you thought it had been done to death, Fly Boy Viz comes along and shakes things up by sampling The Who into a new The Who Print album, featuring current and more recent acapellas as well. Considering its a bootleg, free, and Jay-Z with The Who, I'd check it out if I were you. (No, I didn't rhyme that on purpose)
Fly Boy Viz x Jay-Z x The Who - The Who Print (via RTD)

I haven't posted links or even mentioned Symphony of Science here, but I should have. I absolutely love this concept, and think Colorpulse (aka. John Boswell) is incredibly talented. If you haven't heard of Symphony of Science, you've obviously been under a rock, but you must check it out. Boswell just released the newest song/video in the series last week, called "The Unbroken Thread."
Basically, its clips of scientists and philosophers (including Carl Sagan, Bill Nye, Stephen Hawking, Neil deGrasse Tyson and more) pontificating in autotune over some really interesting textures and music from Boswell. If you're at all into the cosmos, biology, or just what generally makes us tick as the human species, head over, watch the videos and download the songs if you're so inclined.
Symphony of Science
Colorpulse

So that's it for this week. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and new year vacation (if you got to take one), and I hope you downloaded my last mix... because I'm into cheap plugs for my own stuff.
Till next week...

Music of the Week - Albums of the Year

Every year, there are always those artists and/or albums that just blew us away. Whether it was the music, lyrics, or just the simple anticipation of a release, every music fan has a few selections that made their year (and in this case, maybe even the decade). The following is a list of some of my favorite releases of 2009, including singles, EPs and full-length albums (in no particular order except the first two).
After reading through, if you feel I've overlooked something, or need to add it to the list, please feel free to let me know in the comments.

PANTyRAID - The Sauce

I've mentioned PANTyRAID (the duo of Marty Party and Ooah) in a few previous posts, but I can't say that The Sauce isn't one of my favorite albums in some time. Honestly, I've still never heard any solo work from Marty Party, but Ooah (and The Glitch Mob outfit) has been a staple in my musical diet for a while. This release came out of nowhere, and if it wasn't for my curiosity, I might have skipped right past this release. It was, of course, the name of the group that peaked my interest... and I'm so pleased that it did.
Clocking in at just over 55 minutes and 11 tracks, its not the longest LP of the year, but it keeps you on your toes the whole way through. At times its hip-hop, other times downtempo, and others still, dubstep, but even genre-bouncing as it does, the songs have a true symmetry to them and its one of the few albums you can listen to from start to finish and all over again.
The PANTyRAID Mixtape they released free online only helps you love them even more, dropping glitched-out acapellas over tunes from the LP as well as two tracks from the boys' solo work, one non album track and a random DZ tune in there too.
PANTyRAID Official Site

Brother Ali - Us

This one is probably tied with PANTyRAID for album of the year, in my opinion (and maybe even trumps it - depending on when you ask me). The Rhymesayers crew consistantly impresses me with releases from Atmosphere, P.O.S., Jake One, Eyedea & Abilities and more, but Brother Ali is simply in a class of his own.
Arguably similar to Pharoahe Monch in his rap/sing delivery, Ali distinguishes himself with a little more soul, and a storytelling style that's simply unparalleled in today's hip-hop mainstream. Not since the "old days" of hip-hop have I heard someone tell such heartfelt and sincere stories with the swagger and consistancy of a soon-to-be legend. Calling himself "The Preacher" isn't just an ego-boost either: this guy really has it in him to draw out emotions in even the most cold-hearted hip-hop head.
I love music with a fervent passion, but its not often when I'm truly moved by a song. Sure, there are those tunes that I love, and can listen to on repeat for far longer than any sane person, but sometimes there are those moments when music just touches something inside us that unleashes a wave of emotion. This album contains one of those songs for me. "You Say (Puppy Love)" is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest hip-hop songs of my lifetime, and on more than one occasion, has brought tears to my eyes (literally). Maybe its because of my past, my relationships, my personality, or whatever reason you want to psycho-analyze, but the song - lyrics, delivery and music - is in perfect harmony with itself and somehow dials right into my soul. Maybe you won't notice it at first listen (and maybe you will), but you can hear the emotion in his voice and you know that he's really digging deep into his own soul to bring out the reality and passion of his music.
Brother Ali Official Site

Sub Focus - Sub Focus

Young Nick Douwma, known to many as Sub Focus, has been one of the most talked about drum and bass producers since his "X-Ray" started destroying dancefloors in 2005, even though he'd dropped five 12" releases prior to that (one of which being "Soundguy/Blue Note," one of my favorite Frequency Recordings releases ever). Since then, he's delivered on the hype by dropping release after release on Andy C's legendary DnB label RAM Records, and finally dropped his long awaited self-titled full length earlier this year.
Even with releasing 4 of the tunes from the LP as singles prior to the release, the album is totally worth the repeat purchases. And if you were expecting it to be 170bpm+ the whole way through, you've got another thing coming. Nick proves he's one of the UK's heavy hitters by ranging from DnB to dubstep to house and breaks, all while keeping you intrigued and amazed by his self-taught mastery of production (and always with some killer bass).
Sub Focus on MySpace

DJ Hell - Teufelswerk (Day/Night)

"Electroclash" was a word that was thrown around a lot the past decade. It was used to describe groups like Fischerspooner, Tiga and a number of others, but to really get down to the nuts and bolts of it, look no further than International DeeJay Gigolo Records front man Helmut Josef Geier, better known as DJ Hell.
At 47 years old, Geier released "Teufelswerk," a double-disc release featuring quite the range of flavor. From the 13+ minute epic "The Angst/The Angst Part 2," to his unexpected collaboration with Diddy on "The DJ," Geier proves that this isn't just a young man's game... the older folks can get down just as hard, and following on the heels of a consistant string of releases since 1991, he proves he's still got it.
His use of dark, synthy textures and haunting melodies and effects give his music a strange and eerie feel, but there's still something about it that lets you find a groove and settle in. Its minimal, yet complicated, and is an all-around interesting adventure through electronic music.
DJ Hell Official Site

L'usine - A Certain Distance

It took a good friend (and a lot of persistence) to open me up to house music, and one of the first artists he was able to get me into was L'usine (aka. Jeff McIlwain). There was something about his style - so melodic and ethereal, but with just a hint of an edge - that captured me. After a few years of following him, I was extremely excited to see him releasing consistantly through Ghostly International (home to Matthew Dear, Dabrye, Michna and more), one of my go-to labels.
His album A Certain Distance sees McIlwain still in top form, creating beautiful music with a keen (and rarely seen) ability to toe the line between headphones and dancefloor. "Gravity" is simply beautiful: with its vocal edits and blips of melody that you can't help but mellow-out to, and tunes like "Cirrus" and "Baffle" seem aptly titled as you get lost in the music.
L'usine Official Site

Wax Tailor - In The Mood For Life

I'll admit, when this CD came across my desk, I had no idea who Wax Tailor was, and once I did my research, I was a little apprehensive. I mean, I've got nothing against the French, but when it comes to hip-hop - from France - I don't trust anyone but DJ Cam. I'm so glad to be proven wrong (yet again).
I hadn't heard of any of the guest vocalists/MCs on the album, but after hearing their contributions to In The Mood For Life, I'm definitely interested to hear more. Mattic's lyrics on "Until Heaven Stops The Rain" are hot, Sara Genn's voice is absolutely beautiful ("Dry Your Eyes" is probably my number one pick from the LP), and Charlotte Savary does wonderful things with "Dragon Chasers." Not forgetting the other songs those two ladies feature on, as well as appearances from Dionne Charles, Speech Defect, Voice, Charlie Winston, ASM and Ali Harter, this record definitely finds its way into my top pics of the year - backed by proof that it dropped in late September, and is still in rotation on the iPod and the 5-disc CD changer at the house (an extremely rare occurance in my home).
Wax Tailor Official Site

Bassnectar - Cozza Frenzy

This one isn't for everyone. If you're a fan of something a bit more laid back, a mellow vibe, or just some tunes you can relax to with a glass of wine (and/or whatever else you choose as your poison), don't pump Cozza Frenzy through your speakers... because it does exactly what it says on the tin (and I thought I could avoid using that phrase!).
The man known as Bassnectar drops 14 tunes to do some serious damage - to speakers, dancefloors, car windows, and possibly your neighbor's cat. It is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton who, according to Wikipedia, describes his sound as "omni-tempo maximalism." Actually, I found this part of the Wikipedia entry a little humorous: "The sound gravitates toward heavy tempos, playing with double time and half time, and using electronic methods to embellish and reinforce other styles of music, including ragtime, punk rock, blues, batucada, polka, salsa, film scores, gangsta rap, beatboxing, balkan gypsy music, ska, death metal, or dub." Even as a musician, I'm not sure how to take that.
But understand it or not, Ashton delivers it. The album is pure chaos, but in perfect harmony. It still manages to be aggressive while combining all those wildly different elements, and still mesmerizes the senses.
The full-length isn't technically all Bassnectar tunes, as you'll find his remixes of Mr. Projectile and Fever Ray included, but the sound is its own, and if nothing else, they guy can sure smash shit up.
Bassnectar Official Site

Exile - Radio

When this one first came in, I freaked out, thinking it was a new release from Tim Shaw (now known as Tim Exile, formerly releasing as just Exile) who's 2005 album Pro Agonist was an incredible venture into the depths of IDM. I was wrong, but totally ok with what I was hearing.
The first time I heard this Exile (real name: Alec Manfredi) was when he produced a tune for Jurassic 5's Feedback album called "Baby Please." Radio follows a previous full-length and an EP, as well as one of many Jay-Z Black Album remix LPs containing his instrumentals. Its akin to a mixture of Vocal Studies-era Prefuse 73, edIT's Crying Over Pros For No Reason, and a chopped, edited and remixed mash-up of hip-hop/jazz/funk-style music.
I'm not sure if my description really does it justice, so take a listen for yourself, or just check out the video link below (originally brought to my attention by Joe Shockley) to see the man in action along side DJ Day-D.
Exile on MySpace
YouTube Video

BlakRoc - S/T

I talked enough about the BlakRoc LP last week, but I had to include it here. If for no other reason than the fact that its the Black Keys producing hip-hop with some extremely cool collaborations. And the fact that Damon Dash had his hand in it is still interesting to me.
BlakRoc Official Site

Deadmau5 - (For) Lack of a Better Name

Love him or hate him, the Canadian sensation known as Deadmau5 (Joel Zimmerman) burst onto the scene last year with a fury unlike anything the electronic music scene has seen since Pendulum. Strangely enough, Deadmau5's (is that the right way to add posession to his name?) biggest hit off last year's Random Album Title got the reworking and re-release treatment with the help of Pendulum's Rob Swire on vocals.
The album itself won't be all-new to fans of Zimmerman's previous work, as some of the tunes have been seen on 12" and MP3 release, including the aforementioned "Ghosts N Stuff," "Moar Ghosts N Stuff," "Hi Friend" (feat. Flipside), "Bot" and "Word Problems," but those who don't go out and snag the singles may only be familiar with the tunes from DJ sets or Zimmerman's live show.
Two tunes from the LP have already gotten the remix treatment: Ghosts N Stuff has seen official and unofficial remixes from Nero, Sub Focus and Miami's own Hydroz and a host of others, and the "Strobe" remixes were just released, including a version from DJ Marky and S.P.Y. that was completely unexpected.
This album, similar to Random... was released in a few versions. Depending on what you're into, there are mixed and unmixed versions available, as well as a double disc, which includes both.
Deadmau5 Official Site

Sapient - Famine Friends / Make Morphine and Debaser - Back to Work

Not only did I include these LPs in a Music of the Week post a few weeks ago, but I dedicated an entire post to Sapient's incredibly impressive amount of output in the past year. If you haven't snagged these LPs yet, I don't know what you're waiting for (THEY'RE FREE!!). And since you're copping 3 free albums, do the guy a favor and buy Letterhead and Make More if they're not in your library already.
SandPeople Music Official Site

FELT - Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez

Murs and Slug made their return to the duo that paid homage to Christina Ricci and Lisa Bonet in past albums, and dedicate this one to Rosie Perez. This time, instead of Slug's Atmosphere partner Ant, Aesop Rock is at the controls.
Again, another album that got the Music of the Week treatment... but definitely one of the better releases this year. Rhymesayers come through again.
Rhymesayers Official Site

Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3

I was debating including this album in my list, but decided it deserved its place.
Granted, I'm beyond tired of hearing "Empire State of Mind" and "Run This Town," but you can't argue that Jay is one of the most consistant MCs in the game, and he knows how to make hit records. One of the years most anticipated releases, The Blueprint 3 featured Kanye and Timbaland production, and still more of Jay's seemingly unending source of 16s.
Another "love him or hate him" artist, no one can argue that Jay-Z is one of music's top dogs, and for good reason.
Jay-Z Official Site

Eminem - Relapse / Refill

I can't include Jay-Z and not mention the triumphant return of Marshall Mathers.
No one really knew what to expect from Em's Relapse. Would it be more of The Eminem Show? More of the same 4/4-type beats with the same style delivery? More of the Eminem we've all gotten a little tired of after hearing him do practically the same thing on each song?
Thankfully, no. Em returned to the hip-hop scene with vengeance. Apparently, he was listening to people who said he fell off, gave up, or sold out. It seems he heard us talking about how good The Slim Shady LP was, or even how The Marshall Mathers LP was good, but nothing since really stood up to those releases.
What man can make a song about getting molested by his stepfather not only listenable, but darkly humourous and captivating? How many MCs can write an entire album about murder, drugs, sodomy, and pop culture, yet make it something you can put on repeat and actually enjoy?
Only one: Eminem. And he proved it with Relapse. He soldified it with Refill. Something tells me he'll do it again with Relapse 2 next year.
Eminem Official Site

Zion I - The Take Over

I've never heard Zion I on the radio (unless of course, I'm the one playing it), but I should. They've got a unique sound, but its got its hit qualities."DJ DJ" found its way into a few of my sets this year, and the album was on heavy rotation in the car for a while. The beats are tight, lyrics are on point, and the album flows really well from start to finish. It's been a while since it landed back in my CD player, but just thinking about it makes me want to hear it again.
Zion I Official Site

Telefon Tel Aviv - Immolate Yourself

Firstly, rest in peace Charlie Cooper. Charlie passed on January 22, and the album dropped February 3, so this was a bittersweet release for fans of the group. The long-awaited follow-up to A Map of What is Effortless andfollwing the release of Remixes Compiled, Immolate Yourself was unexpected, different, and awesome.
The boys did something different, possibly turning some people off, but I for one loved what they did. It was a new take on their sound, and like Pendulum's In Silico, or RJD2's The Third Hand, even if it wasn't what you were expecting, I can't understand how you weren't pleasantly surprised.
From what I've read, Josh Eustis (the other half of TTV) still plans on making more music, and I'm really interested to see what comes next.
Telefon Tel Aviv Official Site

Junior Boys - Begone Dull Care

After hearing Jeremy Greenspan's guest vocals all over Morgan Geist's Double Night Time, I was dying for a new Junior Boys album. A few months later, Begone Dull Care was waiting in my inbox, and I was thrilled.
Similar to TTV, the duo went in a somewhat different direction with this LP (when compared to Last Exit and So This Is Goodbye), but again - in a very interesting and exciting way. I'm a diehard Junior Boys fan, so I won't go overboard with a track-by-track rundown or anything... especially cause I'm still a little bitter that I had to miss them in concert last month when I had the chance to go for free and got stuck having to cover a shift for someone.
Junior Boys Official Site

Steve Angello & Laidback Luke - Show Me Love (feat. Robin S)

I'd venture to say 95% of the music-listening public knows the original "Show Me Love." And if you played this new revamped version for them, they wouldn't be able to tell too much of a difference, but Steve Angello and Laidback Luke made this one all their own, and dropped a hella-remix bundle to prove it.
The 12"/MP3 release features reworks from Blame, Afrojack, AC Slater and two more to guarantee you can play them no matter what your style may be.
"Show Me Love" on Beatport

Squarepusher - Numbers Lucent (EP)

Tom Jenkinson will forever be one of my all-time favorite producers. The guy is a genius. Even when he's (in my opinion) way over-the-top, there's still something about his music that's got soul and a strange genuine-ness to it.
The Numbers Lucent EP followed his 2008 Just A Souvenir long-player, and fell right in with the album as if it could've been a second bonus disc (which I wouldn'e be surprised to find out wasn't the original plan). And his Solo Electric Bass 1 album I haven't gotten my hands on yet (it was limited to 850 copies), but I can only imagine how incredible it might be too.
Squarepusher Official Site

Shock One - Shock One EP

New Zealand's Shock One (Karl Thomas) is one of the best producers in the game right now, and his EP on Futurebound's Viper Recordings is proof positive. Four tracks: three drum and bass, one dubstep, all smashers.
"Chronic" features MC Spyda doing what he does best, and "Polygon" with Reija Lee is just sublime, but the top of the list for me was his collaboration with Phesta and Metric on "True Believer." Absolutely smashing tune. A sure-fire way to fill (and destroy) a dancefloor.
Shock One on MySpace

The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die

Although the title track leaked out in '08, the full length didn't drop till '09, and what a return for the once thought washed up Liam Howlett and the boys from The Prodigy. Granted, their stage show is short one man from before, but Keith and Maxim are still there (I bet you couldn't name the fourth guy without looking it up), and they're still as wild as ever.
This album was a return to form for Liam, going back to making music with old school, hardcore influences, and not letting pop sensabilities stand in his way. "Omen" screams its synths and teardown breaks just as good as "Warrior's Dance" harkens back to better days and reminds you why you used to love these guys.
A few remixes dropped along the way from Chase & Status and Noisia (see below) to round out the genre-bending, but Liam definitely redeemed himself in alot of peoples' eyes with this one.
The Prodigy Official Site

Noisia

I'm not listing a particular release for these guys - mainly because they've had thier hands in a lot of pots this year.
They've produced bangers for Foreign Beggars (and remixed their own hip-hop tune into some sick drum and bass), released three 12"s of thier own, remixed the hell out of Example and The Prodigy, prodcued the Krause album No Guts, No Glory, appeared on Icicle's Cold Fear EP and Dom & Roland's No Strings Attached LP, and are currently wrapping up producing the forthcoming album from Haduken!.
Three boys from the Netherlands and a whole lot of worthwhile releases, yet still no album from them. I guess when you're working on so many projects, who needs a full length?
Noisia Official Site

Honorable Mentions: (with iTunes links unless otherwise noted)

Tosca - No Hassle

Note: So I've decided to begin a series of essays - with no specific idea for topics yet - as I find myself inspired by something. My plan is to write a little on the subject every now and again when inspiration or information comes to light. The posts wont be pre-planned, or organized beforehand. They will, in all actuality, be random bits of thought on the subject, and will most likely have conflicting ideas presented in the same piece. Consider them like a journal I'm sharing with the world.
Comments, feedback, etc. are very much welcomed through out the posts. I hope they'll make for interesting conversation, and maybe lead us to new topics, ideas or information.
That being said, I present to you the first in the series:

The Radio Debate

Part One - Introduction

The Radio. At more points in our lives than we can remember, we listened to it intently. Its an invention that has kept you up, put you to sleep, kept you sane, driven you crazy, and been a staple in nearly every one of your lives.

I've been obsessed with radio from a young age. I work in radio. I live and breathe it. I love it. But so often, I find myself wondering what the future holds for it.

TechCrunch just posted an article about the online streaming service Pandora doubling its user registrations in the past year, and it got me thinking about what use there would be for terrestrial radio in the infinitely increasing WiFi/3G world we live in today. I really want to take a stance on the issue, but I'm one of the people that stand on both sides of the line: I'm an iPhone owner with a car radio hookup, I use Pandora and Last.fm both at home and on the iPhone and I subscribe to SiriusXM (both in my vehicle and online), I listen regularly to terrestrial radio, and work in the radio and media production industry.

Maybe the problem for me is that I was raised with a radio on in the background. I enjoy the presence of the jock in the studio between songs, and am a huge fan of talk radio as well. Working in production, commercials, promos, liners and station imaging is interesting to me on some level, even if for no more reason than to critique and learn from dissecting them. And on top of everything else, I'm a music addict: I literally listen to just about everything.

A while back, a friend and I were talking about how much we were both enjoying the Pandora experience. We agreed that the best part of the service was the ability to give feedback in likes and dislikes so it would get to "know" your taste (Pandora calls this the "Music Genome Project"). After tweaking your station, it truly is a completely customized musical experience... but its not personal. And for me, that's the rub. The local jock, the morning show crew, your favorite talk radio program: you know these people! On a very personal - and sometimes intimate - level, you feel a connection with these voices. These (generally) "face-less" people on the other end of the dial you somehow consider your friends. You're strangely comfortable with them. Pandora and Last.fm can't give you that. Not even your iPod can give you that. Which then brings us back to the question of where you find that personal connection, and the great radio debate: Is talk radio the future of FM, and thus, is AM dead? And even more, what will become of satellite radio? And what does it all really mean anyway?

Understandably, these questions may not mean much to some people. Though its difficult for me to contemplate a world without AM/FM radio (and after 5 years, Sirius as well), I'm sure there are those wouldn't care if it were gone tomorrow (take away the obvious references to power outage / end of the world scenarios, etc). But what about those of us who still see the radio as an integral part of our daily life? What future awaits us?
