Gratitude 101: How to Write a Thank You Note

While the thought of writing thank-you notes can be daunting in this age of email, it is much easier than you think and so much more appreciated than an email. Without further ado, sit down with some beautiful stationery and show your gratitude. Here's a quick how-to to get you started. . . .

1. Greet the Giver ~ although an obvious one, the "Dear Aunt Jane" line is often overlooked.

2. Express your Gratitude ~ without any unnecessary lead-ins, simply say "Thank you so much for the fill in the blank." If the gift was money, thank them for their generosity but do not directly mention money.

3. Discuss Use ~ say something nice about the gift and how you will use it.

4. Mention the Past, Allude to the Future ~ let the giver know how they fit into your life. {"It was great to see you at Jenny's birthday party, and I hope to see you soon."}

5. Grace ~ express your thanks one more time.

6. Regards ~ Simply wrap up the note using whatever sign-off feels right to you (love, yours truly, etc.).

7. Get it in the Mail ~ address the envelope, stick a great stamp on it, and post it.

Think of the sense of accomplishment you will feel, how appreciated the giver will feel, and the continued stream of gifts you will receive from a happy giver!

Pen Pals: The New Summer Fun

Kids have a knack for being bored even when surrounded by countless toys, video games, outdoor fun and more. To stave off the boredom blues, consider taking an old hobby and introducing it to a new generation. Encourage your kids to spend their summer break corresponding with a pen pal!

Make it fun and exciting by creating pen pal packets with them full of colorful stationery, unusual writing utensils and stamps that match their interests. And of course, no electronic technology is allowed. (Facebook is not a substitution for the art of letter writing.)

Encourage them to sit down and write a letter to grandma, cousins in another state or even a friend just across town. This exercise will teach them focus, contemplation and reflection, along with being a good handwriting exercise. They may even get excited about seeing the mailman just as much as they listen for the ping of a new text message. And, who knows? Their enthusiasm may even inspire you to write a note or two.

The color blue is selling more than ever these days. I have many friends who are pregnant and they are all expecting little boys! Instead, I'm dreaming of planning a pink shower, baptism or 1st birthday. Using the tulip invitation above, I would gather decor inspiration from the talented Christine at Events in Bloom. We just love everything about this 'berry' sweet table by Glory at Glorious Treats! Glory created the strawberry theme party for her niece's 9th birthday and it has since been featured by Amy Atlas on her blog.

Cups, straws, treat bags, table cover and ribbon were all found at Michael's - how convenient is that?

And the strawberry bubbles came from the Dollar Tree!

Favorite detail of the party? The idea of party favors for the Mommies too - fresh, hand-picked strawberries by Glory & her sister.
