Keeping Betawi’s Magical Tradition Alive - Today’s ondel-ondel tradition has slightly shifted from its former function of warding off evil spirits at rituals and ceremonies — to a more tourism-driven spectacle featuring the iconic giant puppets.

On a hot Wednesday afternoon, sitting on a tiny bench on a wooden bridge, under which a river is flowing, ondel-ondel maker Hasyim Maulana tells his stories about the traditions of Betawi people, who are native Jakartans.

Listening to his stories in the front yard of his studio and rehearsal space for his Inti Jaya group, it does not feel as if ondel-ondel, a traditional genre of theater in Jakarta that uses giant wooden puppets for performers, is anything but very alive.

At this small studio in Tanjung Barat on the southern outskirts of Jakarta, the employees of the studio are working hard. They not only create and sell ondel-ondel puppets but they also rent them to hotels, ceremonies and individuals.

Those looking to hire out an ondel-ondel performance can also find here a wide selection of traditional Betawi goods — from gambang kromong, or Betawi music ensemble, music to dodol — sweet cakes made of glutinous rice — and bir pletok.

Together with his co-worker Abi Kurniawan, Hasyim is responsible for the artistic work and managing the studio, while his mother-in-law brews bir pletok — a refreshing non-alcoholic beer that Hasyim claims is good for the health and warms one’s body from the inside.

Ondel-ondel has a long history in this metropolitan city and to this day it remains one of the defining cultural symbols of Jakarta, Hasyim says. “It is not like Monas [The National Monument]. Monas is a national symbol but ondel-ondel stands for Jakarta,” he says proudly.

The form and subject matter of ondel-ondel, which is influenced by Arab and Chinese cultures that entered the former Dutch East Indies through Sunda Kelapa harbor and mixed with Betawi traditions, are designed to ward off evil spirits. Every performance uses two large puppets; one representing the female and the other male.

Today ondel-ondel performers are often invited to hotels and wedding ceremonies.

“When Jakarta is celebrating its birthday, of course there has to be ondel-ondel at the forefront,” Hasyim, who started working in the ondel-ondel business in 1992, says proudly.

He says he has witnesses many changes in the art during his years as an ondel-ondel puppet maker.

“Yes, the music has changed,” he says. “We try to adapt a form of kromong modern, and the musicians are young and handsome so that young people can start getting interested in ondel-ondel again.”

The large group of kids and young adults rehearsing ondel-ondel in his front yard suggest that Hasyim’s strategy may be working.

However, while the music has already been modernized, Hasyim’s studio still prefers the traditional way of producing ondel-ondel masks; carving them from wood. Other studios today use plaster but here everything is done in the traditional way.

“If you focus on your work, you can finish a mask in one day. Sewing the clothes takes two days. In three days, the puppet is complete.”

Most importantly, the faces of the masks have to be friendly, so “they won’t scare away children. I am making the expressions on my masks as gentle as possible,” he says.

“Art is beautiful, and if we show people something beautiful they will stay interested.”

Nevertheless, he realizes that today’s ondel-ondel tradition has slightly shifted from its former function in rituals and ceremonies — as a protection from evil spirits — to a more tourism-based show that incorporates the same giant puppets that can measure up to 3 meters in height.

“Many people who appreciate ondel-ondel come from outside of the country,” Hasyim says, adding that many Betawi people who live far from Jakarta remain faithful to their roots.

“They have moved somewhere else, to Papua or to Singapore,” Hasyim explains. “But they want ondel-ondel puppets sent to their place so they can put them in front of their house, hotel or restaurant as a symbol of their Betawi roots.”

In this sense, Jakarta’s tradition is far from forgotten.

Wayang with a Touch of Dutch

Wayang with a Touch of Dutch - There was no Arjuna in sight. The puppet characters appeared in classic European clothing from the 16th century. And the shadow puppet story was not based on the classic epic Mahabharata or Ramayana — but rather the heroic epic of Prince William of Orange.

That particular evening, the audience was given a rare treat — a wayang shadow puppet show with a fresh, contemporary twist.

Painted in classic European clothing from the 16th century, the puppet characters became alive as young puppet master Ananto Wicaksono told the heroic epic story of Prince William of Orange to a packed hall at the Erasmus Huis in South Jakarta.

The Nusantara Museum in Holland had ordered the puppet of William of Orange — or Willem Van Oranje in Dutch — from Javanese puppet maker Ledjar Subroto, Ananto’s grandfather.

The puppet show was performed in Jakarta and Yogyakarta before being launched in the Nusantara Museum over the weekend.

The story revolves around the battles of Prince William, the proponent of freedom of religion against the Spanish army. The Spanish King, Philip II, declared William an outlaw and promised a reward for his assassination.

The show’s last scene depicted the assassination of the Dutch hero. Balthasar Gerard, a supporter of Phillip II, shot William to death at the prince’s home in Delft.

The contemporary shadow puppet show did not only present a series of serious political banters and war scenes, but also entertained and humored with creative and amusing scenes.

The hundreds of audience members burst into laughter when an old puppet character Jan Klaasen appeared on stage as an intermezzo in the middle of a war.

Jan Klaasen’s funny voice, humorous chat and silly movements became an instant ice-breaker. A Spaniard soldier tried to attack his head to no avail because it was so flexible — it could rotate, turning forward and even backward.

Ledjar said Jan Klaasen was an additional character that was comparable to Punokawan — four royal jokers in the regular puppet shows.

“I inserted the Jan Klaasen character so the audience did not only have to stick to the story, but be entertained by the humor as well,” he said.

Known as the innovator of wayang kancil — leather puppets in animal forms, the 73-year-old Ledjar was internationally known for his novel pieces of the wayang art.

His creations include Wayang Sultan Agung in 1987, a puppet made to depict the struggle of Sultan Agung against the Dutch troops under Jan Pieter Zoon Coen. The puppet was collected by the Westfreis Museum.

Later, he made Wayang Revolusi for the Bronbeek Museum in Arnhem, representing the Indonesian revolutionary figures of 1945. He also created a wayang cartoon based on the Japanese Samurai X comic for the performance of Japanese puppeteer Ryoh Matsumoto in 2002.

Ananto, a student of the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta, said the Nusantara Museum planned to introduce Dutch history to school children through Wayang William.

“The problem [faced by Indonesia and the Netherlands] is the same. Children are reluctant to study history,” he said, adding that wayang was chosen because both countries shared a strong cultural relationship.

The idea to wrap the Dutch history in a wayang story came after officials from the Nusantara Museum watched Ledjar’s Sultan Agung puppet show performance at the Pasar Tong Tong fair back in 2008.

The officials, who saw a Jan Pieter Zoon Coen puppet, were inspired to order the puppet character of William. They were happy to see Ledjar’s creation of the William puppet a year later, saying that the puppet’s image matched the prince’s portraits. Ananto said he researched on the Internet to study the history of William of Orange and watched an original classic movie about him.

“At first, I was thinking of full gamelan for the music, but then I changed my mind because this was a European puppet show. I don’t want to make it an ordinary wayang purwa [traditional puppetry],” he said.

His effort paid off. The Willem puppet show performed in the Erasmus Huis was far from boring.

The music was a collaboration between pop orchestra and traditional gamelan. Some of the conversations in the show, which included an English translation, were even set to opera-esque music, such as during a romantic chat between William and his fourth wife Louise de Coligny.

Ananto, who has been a wayang puppeter since he was four years old, said the Nusantara Museum’s visitors could also watch his 15-minute animated film of the William puppet show in addition to enjoying the real puppet performance.

The museum also plans to tour the puppet show around several cities. Ledjar said the marriage of modern and traditional genres could attract young people.

The most important thing, he added, was to preserve the traditional nuance.

However, nowadays the majority of appreciation for wayang comes from foreign countries like the Netherlands, and little attention is paid to the art form in Indonesia.

Ledjar said no order to make a wayang show about Indonesia’s modern history had come from his his own country.

“You know, there is no interest here in Indonesia. I am concerned about how to encourage our children and young generation to love wayang.”

Karangasem Bali Tourism - The district government of Karangasem, Bali, need more arranging and ordering a few things to support the development of the tourism sector, with hopes of making tourism as a revenue booster (PAD) and improve the level of social welfare.

"A lot of things that need to be done to attract the attention of local government and foreign tourists visiting Bali East, or can be parallel to the tourism sector in South Bali, namely Badung and Denpasar," said Chairman of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) Karangasem, Nyoman Kariasa, Sunday (02/13/2011).

He said these efforts include the repair of damaged roads in the tourist path, the control wild villa, hotel and restaurant license enforcement. Besides tackling the impact of rabies, build zebra cross in front of the Temple Candidasa, trimming trees that interfere perindang roads, settlement areas at the entrance Yeh Malet and the problem of illegal fees to tourists in the Pura Besakih.

Indonesian tourists to Hong Kong Rises - The number of tourists coming to Hong Kong in 2009 reached 29.590 million people rose 0.3 percent compared to 2008, while the special from Indonesia also an increase of 1.3 percent.

Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) in Jakarta, explained that the number of Indonesian tourists to Hong Kong in 2009 reached 353 631 persons when compared with 2008, amounting to 348,938 persons.

Even in December 2009 alone, the number of Indonesian tourists reached 49 956 persons when compared with December of 2008, amounting to 37 437 people.

If tourists in Indonesia in 2009 showed an increase of 1.3 percent in 2008. then the tourists from other countries to Hong Kong instead showed a decrease. For example, the number of tourists from Taiwan in 2009 reached 2.009 million people who showed decreased 10.3 percent when compared with 2008.

HKTB also mentioned a decrease of tourists from New Zealand, Australia and South Pacific to Hong Kong which in 2009 recorded 707 963 people so reduced 7.2 percent from 2008.

Batu Bedil Traces of ancient culture

Batu Bedil Traces of ancient culture - Every time I visit the province of Lampung to meet my in-laws, I usually drive from Pringsewu regency to Kota Agung Beach, a popular tourist destination in the nearby Tanggamus regency. On my way there, I often pass road signs to the Batu Bedil site.

I asked my relatives and friends what Batu Bedil was all about. To my surprise, only my father-in-law could give me an answer. “It’s a prehistoric site in Pulau Panggung subdistrict,” he said. When asked whether he had been there, he said it was almost 15 years ago. He was unsure what it looked like lately. So, I invited my relatives to accompany me there, but they were reluctant.

“Sorry, we are not interested in such old stuff. Although we live close to the sites, we have never been there,” Rusda, 45, said, giggling. Her husband Yanuar added, “We even didn’t even know that such a place existed.” Similar sounds of reluctance came from others.

After doing some research, I was determined to embark on my journey to Batu Bedil. I managed to drag my family along.

The site can be reached by car in one and a half hours from Bandar Lampung, the provincial capital. During the journey, we saw lines of traditional wooden houses known as Lambanon both sides of the road. Once we passed the Talang Padang Market, we turned right to follow the signs to Batu Bedil.

Along nearly 18 kilometers of gravel road we could see cocoa, coffee and vanilla plantations. There were also seasonal crops such as corn and cassava. The air was hot and still.

The road was very quiet. Only a few motorbikes passed, creating an eerie, tranquil atmosphere – as if we return to the remote past. We felt like we were in the middle of nowhere and drove in silence.

Finally, we arrived at a cluster of houses in Batu Bedil Hulu in Tanggamus regency’s Pulau Panggung subdistrict. Here lies the Batu Bedil megalithic site on a hill about 320 meters above sea level, part of the Bukit Barisan mountains.

From atop we could see Mt Tanggamus to the south and Mt Rindingan to the north. No guard was around. So, we asked several local people living next to the site. We were lucky because one of them, PakMursyid, 50, could give us short explanations about the site and even he acted as our tour guide.

Batu Bedil megalithic site indicates the existence of civilization in Pulau Panggung area whose community existed around two thousand years ago. There is also a menhir, around 220 centimeters tall, the highest at the site.

Myth has it that during the Dutch colonial era, there were sounds of the bedil or rifle from the stone. Since then people called it Batu Bedil or the rifle stone. Several smaller menhirs are scattered around the site.

Mursyid told us that the cluster was composed of three sites: The megalithic, the inscription and the statues. The Batu Bedil inscription is located only about 100 meters away from the Batu Bedil megalithic site. An inscription is a history source which provides information on political events, religions or the condition of the community in that time, usually released by an authority.

The inscription was written on a stone 185 centimeters high, 72 centimeters wide and 55 centimeters thick; containing 10 worn out lines of sentences in Sanskrit, and was constructed circa 9th– 10th centuries, when it was under the Sriwijaya kingdom (7th– 10thcenturies). From the letters, several words can still be read: Namo Bhagawate in the first line and Swâhâ at in the 10th line.

The third site, Batu Gajah, lies 4 kilometers away and is located on a narrow road connecting Talang Padang and Air Bakoman villages.

The Batu Gajah site, around 750 square meters and situated in the middle of a residential area, is located at Batu Bedil Hilir . The local administration put barbed wire fence around the area in 1994. In this site there are unfinished statues of Batu Gajah (Elephant Stone), Batu Kerbau (Water Buffalo Stone) and several menhirs.

The Elephant Stone is made of a monolith 94 centimeters tall, 21 centimeters wide and 164 centimeters thick, made of tufamaterial, a kind of limestone. It looks as if the stone is intended to be carved as an elephant head, complete with trunk, tusks, eyes and ears.

To the left and right side of the stone there are scratches made by an elephant’s body and feet. During that era, an elephant was considered as a holy animal in Hindu belief – a symbol of fertility and a charm against bad luck. Later on, an elephant was also believed to be the vehicle of God Indra.

Next to Elephant Stone lies the Water Buffalo Stone, measuring 100 centimeters tall, 140 centimeters wide and 135 centimeters thick, also made of tufamaterial, carved completely including mouth, nose and eyes. In the yard there are 12 small menhirs.

“Apart from this cluster, there is still another site called Situs Gelombang (the Wave Site), located across the Ilahan River. If you would like to have a look, I can accompany you there,” Harun, another man we met at the site, offered his help politely. However, we thought that we’d seen enough, beside, the evening had crawled in.

As night fell, I had a new understanding about this piece of land, which at first looked desolate. It was inhabited a long time ago by a megalithic community whose descendants later on became glorious Sriwijaya Kingdom citizens. Later, I found out that the Batu Bedil cluster was declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 2004.

Chicago Weather Forecast Keeps Bringing More Snow - The Chicago weather forecast has been ugly all week. So far, the Chicago weather forecast has unfortunately lived up to the hype in the Windy City. On Monday, residents rushed to get ready and hunker down for what was

being hyped as their biggest blizzard in a long time. Therefore, everyone was bundled in yesterday, as over a foot of snow fell down as expected. Yet the forecast for today signals that there are still more hazards left to come.

Much of the Midwest has been struck by this giant blizzard. The bulk of it came yesterday, as it swept through the region on its way to the already battered Northeast. But although many cities got the worst of it, a few stood out from the rest.

The Chicago weather forecast before yesterday projected one of the city's greatest storms ever. Whether it was historic or not, it remained quite massive, as the blizzard indeed brought more than a foot down. Official totals aren't confirmed yet, but it could actually get closer to two feet when all is said and done.

The damage includes thousands of grounded flights, icy conditions, and a blown off roof panel at Wrigley Field. Worse yet, the snow hasn't quite finished yet, with at least a few more inches projected to fall before the day is out.

At the least, the Chicago forecast has the blizzard finally ending within the next several hours. As of early this morning, O'Hare Airport recorded 17.1 inches on the ground, with Midway Airport spotting 18. Once the snow finally stops, the total should be over 20 in some areas, if not two feet exactly.

This may not be the biggest blizzard in the city's history, yet it is likely to be the largest in some time. Whatever its place in the history books, it is a massive problem, and could take more than a few days to clear out.

Sadly, Chicago's weather doesn't stand to get sunny anytime soon. According to the Chicago Weather Center, light snow is predicted for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. If it is merely light, it would be a relief, but the last thing people want to see right now is any more snow, period.

Batik selected for UNESCO cultural heritage list

Batik selected for UNESCO cultural heritage list - Indonesians have been asked to wear batik on Oct. 2, following UNESCO’s decision to add the traditional dyeing technique to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

The listing, which will give the age-old batik tradition some degree of protection under the UNESCO charter, will be made official at an event in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, between Sep. 28 and

Oct. 2.

To acknowledge the listing, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked all Indonesians to wear batik.

“Batik is regarded as a cultural icon with its own uniqueness. It contains symbols and a deep philosophy of the human life cycle — and it was submitted by Indonesia as a non-material element of cultural heritage,” Coordinating Minister for the People’s Welfare Aburizal Bakrie told a press conference at Bogor Presidential Palace on Monday.

“We’ve been told that batik has been recognized as an element of global cultural heritage produced by Indonesians. The President has called on all Indonesians to wear batik on Oct. 2, to celebrate batik.”

Batik is a wax-resistant dyeing technique used on textiles. Due to modern advances in the textile industry, the term is also used for fabrics incorporating traditional batik patterns that are not necessarily produced using traditional batik techniques.

In the past, Indonesians, mostly adults, wear batik only at formal events. Nowadays it has become increasingly popular even among the younger generation with batik factories starting to manufacture more wearer-friendly and fashionable batik outfits.

Many office workers now wear batik on a daily basis, while local designers compete to produce more attractive designs.

While batik originated in Javanese courts, several other regions in Indonesia also have their own styles of batik. The fabric is also widely worn in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Aburizal explained that the jury team from UNESCO, before declaring batik an element of global cultural heritage, had inquired about the origins of Indonesian batik, on the government’s protection of it and to what extent batik was a part of local community life.

Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said batik was therefore Indonesia’s third tradition to secure UNESCO’s recognition as an element of non-material global cultural heritage.

In 2003, the UN body named wayang (Indonesia’s traditional shadow puppets) and keris (traditional wavy blades) as elements of non-material cultural heritage.

“And now we are submitting angklung (traditional musical instrument made of bamboo) as an element of global cultural heritage from Indonesia,” Jero said.

“We will keep fighting for our heritage one tradition at a time.”

2011 Oscar Nominations List - The list of nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards is released and as always, there has been quite a number of surprises this year too. With Tom Hooper's "The King's Speech" receiving 12 nominations, there is definitely a fair chance for the film to win the best picture award.

"The Social Network" is another film that has got 8 nominees and is hoping to win the 2011 awards. Andrew Garfield's exclusion for the best supporting actor, has come as a shock to many but the actor reportedly lost the Oscar nomination because of splitting of votes among other strong supporting actors in the film including Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer. Another shocking exclusion was Christopher Nolan for the best director nomination for "Inception" which was one of the biggest blockbusters last year. This is not the first time that Nolan has been left out from the Oscar nominations, his highly successful "The Dark Knight" and "Memento" also some how didn't impress the jury to award him as the best director. ONE of the world award again achieved the level of Indonesia, namely traditional music angklung set by the court on the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Nairobi, Kenya (18 Novermber 2010) as percussion instruments from bamboo as a world cultural heritage. Angklung categorized as Masterpieces of Oral Heritage and Human Nonbendawi.

Of course it means a determination of the existence of musical instruments native to Indonesia, which until now still reverberate and preserved by school children and various community organizations both domestically and abroad.

Verizon iPhone to be released in early 2011 - Largest telecommunications operator in the U.S., Verizon Wireless finally confirm if the latest series of iPhone will be available in early February.
