I was there when it started. I was there when Digg first started chugging along. I remember it being slow, ugly, and crappy. I remember wondering why anyone would ever use something like it. And who cares if 79 other people think a story is worth my time? I browse my own news sites, thank you very much.

I kept my eyes on Digg (and its many, many competitors) over the next several years as I graduated from college, worked, then went back to school. It wasnt until I began studying online communities, however, that I really understood anything. Recent Problems If you spend any time on social news sites, youve already noticed the mass migration of users from Digg to Reddit.

But there are answers to be found, and Id like to share my ideas as I keep searching. Most people think the roots of this change-up lie in Digg v4. It was meant to be an upgrade from Digg v3 a permanent change with better load times, better features, and a better UI.

Not only did users dislike the general look and feel of the site, but they also felt betrayed as personal information (formerly attached to their accounts) disappeared without warning. Additionally, the site was constantly crashing due to a new, bug-laden database.

If the reports are to be believed, it appears most of them went to Reddit. But hold on. Is this truly the beginning of the end as so many former-Diggers claim? Will the mass exodus actually destroy Digg? Im not so sure. Most of the Diggers think this is something new, but this type of community migration has occurred on the Internet time after time after time.

Diggs loss of user base is just a very high-profile occurrence. Im here to argue that Diggs not done just yet and on top of that, this whole thing started long before Digg v4. In the Beginning In the beginning (2004), there was Digg. It was crappy, slow, and ugly.

Digg slowly picked up steam by word of mouth (and email), and eventually there was something like a stable user base. Due to the sites content and founders, most of these users were tech geeks, developers, and information technology people. (Sort of a social news equivalent of slashdot if you remember slashdot.

To keep up with the changing community (and compete with other sites), Digg launched version 2 with a new friends feature (July 2005). Suddenly the anonymous posting and approval features took a new turn those 128 other Diggers all had names and icons.

The awareness of others began to creep into Digg, and the whole site began shaping itself into a community. Diggnation Parallel to the Digg v2 launch, Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht hosted a new podcast called Diggnation. It served as a best of the week show for Diggs top stories, and it attracted a much larger audience than Kevin Rose had ever imagined.

Users proudly wore Digg T-shirts and sent pictures to the show. Girls asked the hosts on dates and (*gasp*) wanted their bodies autographed. Kevin Rose appeared on the cover of BusinessWeek in an embarrassing photograph that became part of Digg culture (and legend).

Diggnation proved one thing: ignoring Kevin and Alexs couch-seat comedy, Diggs user base had become unprecedentedly large. Digg v3 Early in 2006, Digg began receiving buyout offers. Kevin Rose (and company) pushed forward with the site and launched Digg v3 (June 2006).

Furthermore, features like top stories became more explicit throughout the life of Digg v3. Things that were formerly hidden became transparent, and the developers experimented with a number of different features to varying degrees of success. The New Crowd In some ways, Digg v3 was a smashing success.

The community was utterly central to Digg, and the site reflected this attitude. Digg was all about friends, following, and personalized news. But were the New Crowd really faithful to Digg? In other ways, Digg v3 was a resounding failure. Older users slowly trickled out this was not the site they knew and loved any more.

Gone were the analyses of programming. Gone were the debates over Ruby on Rails vs. PHP. Replacing them were things like how to cook in 10 easy steps. Digg began to look less like a technology site and more like a web version of Maxim magazine. Sure, you could filter out the stuff you didnt like, but why bother? Even the programming channels had turned away from in-depth articles and toward basic tutorials.

As the content of Digg became broader, so did the audience. Sadly, as the depth of Digg became shallower, so did the audience. Digg users felt entitled to their resources. They felt they owned their accounts, owned their list of dugg articles, owned their interface.

In response, the community threw a fit. They demanded not to be censored, and they threatened rebellion. In desperation, Kevin Rose (and the entire Digg company) relented. Kevin personally published a story on the official Digg blog with the encryption key in it, announcing he would no longer censor stories on Digg.

Youd rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we wont delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be. If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.

After initially proclaiming Kevin Rose a hero, Digg users became increasingly demanding. Additionally, Digg became less about reading interesting content and more about popular comments. It was extremely commonplace to see comment threads where most of the audience hadnt even read the linked article.

(In fact, if you check the archives of Diggnation, you can find a list of most commonly used Digg memes. ) The Digg Effect When Digg first started, blog-owners would often report cases where their entire site had crashed due to a sudden influx of traffic.

For entrepreneurs, this traffic could be an easy source of income. The power of Digg traffic slowly dawned on several different audiences, all of whom tried to leverage it for their own uses. At first, business-people tried to copy Digg; in the face of failure, they tried to buy out top Diggers and re-direct traffic toward their sites.

Community members competed for attention in comment threads. The once-dreaded Digg Effect had become a marketing tactic known web-wide. The Release of Digg v4 All the while, the developers at Digg were hard at work on a new version. To combat exploitation from both outsiders and users, Digg made it so that content-owners received credit for their stories (rather than random users who submitted the stories first).

To make the site more community-oriented, Digg made several features friend-oriented by default. Gone were the days where you saw the opinions and pulse of the entire community suddenly your world was limited to specific friends and taste-makers. While developing Digg v4, the idea was obviously to make Digg more community-oriented.

On August 25, 2010, Digg officially released Digg v4. Early reports indicated crashes, data-loss, and a general sense of confusion. In the words of the now-famous meme, Digg accidentally their website, and it was bad. In response, Kevin Rose posted a message on his blog to ameliorate the Digg community.

When the site came back online, Diggers began complaining en-masse about the problems, the layout, and the loss of their data. The nation of Digg demanded a full revert to Digg v3. Whether on purpose or by freak accident, many of these stories mysteriously disappeared from the front page.

Users began posting all submissions to Reddit (Diggs #1 rival), then submitting the Reddit pages to Digg. By mob power, the Digg front page was dominated by Reddit articles. Vocal Digg users began publicly abandoning the website in droves. Legitimate stories were covered with comment threads full of this account is now closed.

The community had officially turned against Digg. Where We Are Now Despite the problems, Digg is still alive, and it has undergone many changes to placate the mob that abandoned it. Thenextweb estimates that Digg has lost 26% of its U. Market and even more in the UK.

While Digg is currently in a tough spot, the site still retains about 3/4 of its original user base. Perhaps the 1/4 that left were just the loudest? The BusinessWeek photograph had gone from a fun inside joke to a banner of hatred. How did we get here? How did the community go from love to hate so very quickly? One thing is certain: those who abandoned Digg were not the original, loyal user base that existed in Digg v1.

They were slowly replaced by a new generation (a New Crowd) of less-loyal, more selfish individuals. These were people who loved MySpace because it let them have their own webpage. Then they abandoned MySpace for Facebook, which became their new stomping ground.

Then they decided to make it their own. These people were the community of Digg. Is it really surprising they pitched a fit when Digg did something they hated? I dont think so. Like any good story, theres a lot more under the surface. We can safely assume that the community for which Digg bled, sweated, and sacrificed itself had become immature and selfish over time.

Maybe Digg is just happy they left only time will tell. Those who have moved on to Reddit have already begun making some unwelcome waves.

For now, the vocal users of Reddit seem happy to have them, but perhaps well see the same thing happen there as well? I would offer the following words of caution to Reddit: Be very careful which community you encourage to stick around (and which one you alienate).

Yet, one practically has to have a degree in chemistry to understand all the ingredients in laundry detergent. So, whats a person to do? Well, here is a very basic explanation of what the ingredients in your detergent do for you and a recipe with some natural alternatives.

What Does Detergent Do? Water has a surface tension that prevents the fabric from absorbing it and thus washing away the soil. To break that surface tension you need a surfactant. These chemicals help to loosen the soil from the garment and hold them suspended in the water until washed away.

It is more commonly known as soap scum and you can see it as a bath tub ring or a ring inside of your washing machine. This precipitate will settle into fabrics making them stiff and more likely to attract dirt. The water softener added to the detergent prevents the mineral salts (mostly magnesium and calcium) from bonding with the soap and forming that film.

By converting ultraviolet light wavelengths to visible blue light, these chemicals simply trick the eye into thinking that the clothes are whiter. Since brighteners only work if left on the fabrics, clothes washed in these detergents will come out of the machine with a chemical residue left on them.

These are all chemically derived. In commercially prepared detergents all of these ingredients are chemicals that are slow to degrade, if at all, and are known to cause allergies and skin and eye irritations in sensitive individuals. Some are toxic to the environment.

Make Your Own Detergent Most homemade laundry detergent recipes out there contain the same ingredients: 1 bar of Fels-Naptha soap 1 cup of Washing Soda cup of Borax powder In this recipe, the Fels-Naptha soap acts as the surfactant. Though historically it contained Stoddard solvent (sometimes called naptha and a petroleum by-product used as a dry cleaning and paint solvent), according to the ingredients on the label it no longer does.

It is not to be confused with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). Do not substitute baking soda. You will not get the same results. The borax (sodium borate) is a naturally occurring substance that brightens and deodorizes. All of these ingredients are normally sold in the laundry section of your supermarket.

Lavender, lemon and rose are popular choices. To make a powdered detergent, cut the soap into small pieces and then powder it in a food processor or blender. Mix this with the soda and borax. Use 1-2 tablespoons per load depending on the size of the load and the amount of soil.

To make a liquid detergent, grate the soap bar and put in a saucepan with six cups of water and heat until the soap melts. Add the soda and borax and stir until all is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups of hot water into a bucket. Add your soap mixture.

Let the mixture sit for 24 hours to gel. Use cup per load. The mixture will be goopy. This is normal. You may want to stir it before using. Keep it covered when not in use. This mixture should do about 64 loads. Another question often asked about making your own laundry detergent is the cost.

However, several price studies done have found making your own laundry detergent much cheaper than the leading brands in the supermarket. I have a son who I have put through a private Catholic High School not cheap and he is on to college in 2007. I bought a modest house last year. I receive no child support. I carry a balance on my credit card low interest rate and I pay as much as I can every month. I am never late and have an excellent credit rating. My fathers mind was going and my Mom couldnt handle him alone. I had been saving to put myself through University up to that point.

Then to purchase a house afterwards. Taking care of my parents shelved those plans. And after five years when my mother died I had to quit my job as well because my Dad needed full time care. I was left my parents house after my Dad died last year but it sounds better than it is. The place actually needs about 50000 dollars spent on it minimum to bring it up to date. I have a house. And I have no credit card debt. But I have no job either and no prospects of one now since I am getting too old to be considered employable in my former profession.

And be thankful for each bit of security you can wrest for yourself. Debt is a b1tch but it beats having nothing. Just be sure that you get well ahead on paying off your mortgage and other debts before you add anything more to it now. A personal seems to be a lot more Superwomen out there in the world then Supermen. You dont see too many of them succeeding with this sort of daily pressure hanging over them. Women just seem to have a greater degree of responsibility and staying power.

I agree with the answers above. I too do the smell check if I havent spilled anything on it within reason. Pants can be worn a week or two without being washed if they dont get dirt or stains on them. Shirts can be determined by the activities done while wearing it and whether you wore it for the whole day or not. If you have a nice outfit that you only wear for a few hours in the evening it does not need to be washed until after about the 5th use. If you wear a nice outfit for the full day and are not doing anything really active or dirty it can go about 2 or 3 uses.

If you are doing really dirty work the clothes should be washed after one use no matter how long you had it on for. The reason things need to be washed whether they look or smell like it or not is because the oils dead skin cells from your skin and dustdirt buildup get on them and if it not washed within a reasonable amount of time can cause skin irritation or just general griminess. Just use your good judgement. Fashion is all about having fun and trying out new things not just about rules that one should stick to. For example most rulebooks say that short girls should wear things that make them look taller. I personally think being petite is an asset not a hinderance.

But I still think that petite girls look cute in ballet pumps. Be proud of being a shortie and make it work for youMiniskirts are good for short girls as are midthigh lengths. Generally speaking no longer than an inch above the knee works well. Petite girls CAN wear maxi skirts that touch the floor. But midcalf or below the knee is better suited to the tall girlies. If you like leggings go for ones that only cover the knee rather than ones that go down to your ankles or midcalf.

Then comb out his mane pull it when i braid i pull it to about 2 inches depending on what length you likem I also suggest using quick braid when braiding or banding but my horses mane is roached most of the time so i dont braid very often.

Wash your saddle pads you will use if theyre white bleach them if theyre colored use bleach for colors. If you will be using polos wash them up too. Next brush your boots off get all the mud and everyday stuff off so you only hav to buff them at the show. Gather all your show apparel make sure there are no wrinkles stains lint etc. Pick up a couple of hair nets too. The day of the show. Pack all of your tack first if you have a saddle cover i would use it. Before you load your horse brush his legs off really well and boots him or use standin wraps whatever you use.

When you get to the show allow your horse to stretch get a drink and eat something. Groom him really well On his white markings rub in some white chalk. Brush out his tail really well so its got that long flowly look and spray in some show sheen. If he happend to get any stains over night showsheen it and brush it out. I sometimes spray a little showsheen on my hands rub it in and rub it around my horsess eyes and muzzle to make it shine. Dont drip it down his face it could get in his eyes or he could should have it rubbed into your hands enough so theres nothing dripping or soaking.

Now would be the time to apply polos if you will use the Scrub the mud off his hooves and coat in hoof polish clear unless you he has black or dark hooves clear works on any hooves. When you groom the rest of his body brush him really thoroughly and then spray showsheen into a towel and wipe him down to remove any leftover dust. Do this everywhere except where your saddle will be judges wont see that part and it could get slippery when it mixes with horse sweat. Wipe your tack down and tack him up. Once you horse is ready to go get yourself ready.

Then put your hair back in a tight bun if you can hairspray it light spray mostly on the sides of your head and front so you dont have strands and flyaways falling out of your helmet put the hair net on maybe use a couple clips behind your ears nothing wild colored black will do and then put on your helmet. Buff your boots. Oh if you wear spurs polish them. Then have someone help you with your number some are worn on the bridle some worn on the pad some worn your back.

Then make sure you have legal tack. When you get into the saddle dont pick up the stirrups right away have someone wipe down your boots take a nice long stretch and a deep breath. Have someone rub in some last minute chalk on your horses markings.
