It’s literally the coolest shoe around.

I get sent running shoes to run in and review all the time. It’s a nice perk of my job, even when I don’t get first choice of style or color. When I arrived at work a few weeks ago to find a pair of bright green ClimaCool Rides from adidas on my desk, I put them on without a care for color, walked around the office for a bit and went for a run at lunch a couple hours later. After a few strides I wasn’t too concerned about the crazy color of the shoes on my feet but was instead impressed with the smooth ride and plentiful forefoot protection this sub-10 ounce shoe had to offer.

Now, first things first, I wouldn’t classify this as a minimalist shoe, but rather a protective lightweight trainer. There’s a fair amount of midsole to it (more than other lightweight trainers and most racing flats) albeit a very flexible one. Deep flex grooves on the bottom of the shoe (see photo) provide maximum front-to-back flexibility, which allows your foot to move naturally, regardless of your running style. Unlike a lot of other lightweight trainers, however, this shoe offers a surprising amount of protection underfoot. As a midfoot/forefoot striker, I found the cushioning in the ClimaCool Ride to be firm but forgiving. This is a versatile shoe which is responsive enough to go fast when you want to go fast, but soft enough to absorb impact when you’re just cruising along at an easy effort.

Deep flex grooves throughout the shoe allow for a smooth transition regardless of your running style.

True to its name, the ClimaCool is extremely well ventilated. It’s minimal and extremely unintrusive upper allows your foot to do what it wants to do while optimizing airflow and keeping your feet cool when the weather gets warm. Case in point, last week during an unseasonably warm spell here in San Diego (near 90 degrees) my feet stayed fairly dry while the rest of my running clothes (all technical fabrics, by the way) soaked up a fair amount of sweat. As a lifelong sufferer of Squishy Foot (thanks to Running Times editor Scott Douglas for coining this hilariously accurate term), I was impressed with how much less moisture my socks, and the shoes, retained. Also, at no point did my feet feel like they were heating up, a common issue when pounding the pavement around noon time on a warm day in southern California.

While this is a great new running shoe, with surprisingly tremendous versatility, it’s not for everyone. If you’re a runner who needs a less flexible shoe with additional medial protection in the midsole and/or upper, the ClimaCool Ride just won’t do it for you. If you like to go off-road, I would refrain from taking these guys on the trail. But if you’re a fairly efficient runner, or simply want to experiment with a more flexible, lightweight shoe for training and racing this summer, then I suggest taking this shoe for a Ride.

Fit

Toebox: Generous. I have fairly fat feet (thanks to a larger-than-life bunions) and I have plenty of toe clearance, as well as side to side room, in these shoes.

Midfoot: Average. Neither tight nor overly loose, the upper wraps my foot well while providing a secure fit.

Heel: Secure. For an overall flexible shoe the ClimaCool Ride had a rigid heel counter (i.e. not easily collapsable) that held my foot well in the shoe.

Feel

In-Shoe Security: Secure. While my foot has plenty of room to do what it wants to do, the shoe doesn’t feel sloppy. When I run my foot can do as it pleases, but it’s not going anywhere.

Perceived Weight: Light. Weighing in at 9 ounces in a men’s 9.5, this shoe felt light on my feet. While it looks like more shoe than others in its category, there’s nothing bulky about it.

Ride

Transition: Smooth. No clunk or awkward transition here. The deep flex grooves throughout the shoe allow for a smooth transition, whether you’re a slight heel striker or mostly up on your midfoot or forefoot.

Responsiveness: Firm, but forgiving. This shoe definitely isn’t plush, but it’s fast enough for a tempo run and there’s also enough cushioning underfoot that I felt protected when running at a slower pace.

The Adidas ClimaCool (CC) Ride should have been lumped in the minimalist shoe category, as with the Nike Free Run+2 or the Saucony Kinvara but it’s being marketed as a conventional running shoe that provides a 360-degree CLIMACOOL cooling system which makes it extremely breathable for the entire foot.

When i tried it on the first time for a test-walk, i felt that this shoe was even lighter than the Adidas F50 Runner which i reviewed a few months ago (here), and it leaves very little between your foot and the ground and has very little stability than the latter shoe. It has a very thin, perforated sock liner and runners who frequently suffer from blisters will find this to their liking because of its adequate ventilation.

CONSTRUCTION

The upper is minimally constructed with thin layers of open mesh, similar to that of the Saucony Kinvara, simple and nothing fancy, just designed with air-channels to emphasize breathability. It seems that this shoe was built for runners who run in hot, tropical weather. The only one that’s padded is the heel area, a non-woven fabric lining to give additional comfort.

The outsole has a soft, zigzag design that has similarities with the Reebok Zig Tech and the Nike Free versions. The crevices between the zigzag design gives it its flexibility on the forefoot. The arch is partly supported by 3 extra ports running from the outsole to the midsole, just under the arch part.

FIT AND FEEL

The CC Ride is half-size bigger than the sizes you usually wear and has a remarkably smooth feel for such a minimalist shoe. For my first test-run, i went to the Ultra Track Oval and gave it a few spins. Even when running on the tartan track, i felt the rubber ground underneath which would be favorable perhaps for lean and efficient runners who would like a feel of the surface underneath when running fast tempos.

The fit was snug from heel to toe. Moreover, with its lightness, it was very responsive and because of its flexibility, it allowed your foot to move freely as if running on barefoot. Me and my friends ran repeat up the stadium stairs and felt nothing to hinder the steps up.

I took it the next day on the roads and anticipating some rough terrain, i decided to insert silicone heel pads on both shoes to give it additional cushioning. Ran it on asphalt, cement, short dirt trails and hills to check how the shoe felt on the different surfaces. I still felt the terrain underneath specially when i intentionally stepped on small pebbles and stones so i sticked on running on the smoother surfaces and felt just fine.

PERFORMANCE

Performance of this shoe was highly satisfactory as expected, and runners who race frequently would appreciate the smooth, agile ride and the responsiveness was evident, great for mid-foot or forefoot strikers.

OVER-ALL IMPRESSION

My over-all impression of the Adidas CC Ride is generally positive. It feels fast and it got that natural feel, just a smooth ride from toe-off to landing. The flexibility and agility you feel when running on them is immediately instant. As an afterthought, there was really no need to break in the shoe.

Nevertheless, the thing i wished for this shoe was they should have put a little stability on it and add more cushioning if they had it intended as a conventional running shoe. Otherwise, this would be one shoe minimalist runners would like to have. It’s an excellent neutral shoe for those who would do lots of speed work on their runs and to those who want to incorporate barefoot-like training into their routine. It comes in different color combinations.

A caveat: Heavy runners or over-pronators who need greater stability and cushioning should look elsewhere.

Adidas Traxion Lite FM Golf Shoes

When I go golfing I prefer to walk the course and do so whenever I can. Walking 18 holes of golf is usually between 5 and 6 miles, so it’s important to have happy feet on the course. There are a lot of great golf shoes I want but most of them are about $200 and I refuse to pay that much, so I’m always in search of a reasonably priced pair.

I was searching on eBay last week and came across some new styles from Adidas, which led me to BudgetGolf.com. I ended up ordering this pair of Adidas Traxion Lite FM shoes for $66.95 after shipping.

I wore the shoes for the first time tonight, played 9 holes for league. It’s early to say for sure, but these may be the best pair of golf shoes I’ve ever owned. My feet were really comfortable and I didn’t even realize I had golf shoes on.

Most golf shoes have 7 replaceable spikes on each shoe, but as you can see, these only have 5 spikes and they are built into the shoe. They appear to be made from a much harder plastic than replaceable spikes so they should hold up for the life of the shoe. The soles have a lot more extra grips (which are similar to the Ecco shoes worn by Fred Couples) than your normal golf shoe. My foundation was very stable and I never slipped during a swing in today’s round.

As you may have guessed from the name of the shoe, these are also fairly light in the weight department. This can make a world of difference after a long day on the course. A final bonus is that the Traxion Lite FM has a modern look, making them very stylish. If you’re looking for a new pair of golf spikes check out this model from Adidas or look at some of their other recent lightweight models.

This is the third model Kanadia Tr, I have (ed) the model of the previous two. They are good to run on any terrain, this pair is much heavier than the first model, which are not as slick as the first two on a wet surface. Unlike the second model of the upper mesh is thicker and therefore retain more moisture and odor. Usually, I find this type of shoes for a total of 3 months and must be replaced. Adidas size is a little off so be sure to order a size above the normal amount.
