Replacing Google Notebook

As you already know, Google stopped development on several products, including Google Notebook.

I started using Google Notebook as soon it was announced. It changed the way I used bookmarks online, In fact I stopped using locally stored bookmarks in favor of storing links in Google Notebook.

I tried using delicious , but I found it too limiting, and didn't want all my bookmarks to be public.

As time passed, I started using GNotebook for four main things in my daily workflow:

Bookmarks.
'I Will read that later'.
TODO lists.
NOTES/Research.

So when they announced that they were stopping development I was shocked as it was one of my main tools for work/research and I started looking for replacements.

There are a bunch of articles you can read about Google Notebook replacements, some competing companies have even written importers for GNotebook.

Instead of using just one app, I decided to use specific apps depending on the workflow:

Bookmarks.

These days I have very few real bookmarks, there is a bunch of sites that I visit every day, most of the stuff I find ether with a Google Search or in my feed reader.

So, for the few static bookmarks I still have, I migrated my links to Google Bookmarks:

It's online, so I have access to my bookmarks no matter what OS, web browser or PC I'm at.

It is a very basic bookmarking service and that's exactly what I need. I use two bookmarklets: One to open the bookmarks :

And another to bookmark the current page:

This one opens a new window:

'Read later' links.

With time, I started using Bookmarks/GNotebook for this workflow: Read this stuff later.

When you think about it, this is more like a temporary bookmark in a TODO list. Maybe I saw something interesting, but don't have the time to read it now, but it does not merit a static bookmark.

I found instapaper to be perfect for this workflow. Instapaper stores links in a kind of Inbox which then you can either click, archive, or read just the text right from the instapaper website.

It has a very simple interface (iPhone version available), you just have to use a simple bookmarklet called 'Read Later' and it stores the link in your account for later use.

This is a very simple and cool service. It also provides a RSS feed of your unread items. (I am a feed junkie by the way.)

TODO list

I looked for a simple TODO list for a long time, I settled for Remember The Milk , the darling of lifehackers everywhere and GTD evangelists.

I am not completely sold, but it is relatively simple, and has tons of features. I manage my work TODO list with it, and with a simple hack, it has become usable.

I use the mobile version of RTM's web page as a kind of 'Desktop Gadget'. You just need to point your browser to http://m.rememberthemilk.com/ and remove the browser 'chrome'.

Google Chrome can do this automatically (use the 'create application shortcut' menu), You can also use Firefox Prism for the same effect.

Since I use it for my work TODO list, and at work I have to use Windows XP (as a .NET developer I don't have much choice ;-p ) I choose to use Google Chrome.

(Chrome is my main browser on Windows, and the moment it becomes available for Linux/Mac, bye bye Firefox!)

Notes/Research

Now we come to the real replacement for Google Notebook: Evernote .

Evernote is a very similar product as GNotebook, it manages online Notebooks, It can scrap the content, not just the URL, and has three main interfaces:

Web
Native application (Windows/Mac only)
Mobile: I use the iPhone app.

Evernote is more than just a online notebook, The company uses the term: a Backup For Your Brain

I am still adjusting to all the features and integrating them to my workflow, Evernote really deserves another blog post to feature everything it does (soon, I promise).

Right now, the iPhone app alone, has changed the way I use and capture notes. It is that good.

In the mean time, you can use it's Google Notebook importer to move your notebooks to Evernote.

There is this great article at Zen Habits that list the benefits of rising early. I've been getting up early (between 3am - 4am) for two weeks now, and it really makes a difference:

The article list these 10 benefits:

Greet the day
Amazing start
Quietude
Sunrise
Breakfast
Exercise
Productivity
Goal time
Commute

My take on them:

Greet the day.

I don't really greet the day as the article implies, I barely make it out of bed semi conscious :-)

Amazing start.

I do get an amazing start for the morning ritual.

Quietude.

It is pretty quiet, no noise, no people, empty streets. this I like.

Sunrise.

I'm still inside when the sunrise comes, In fact, it's still dark when I get to the office.

Breakfast.

This has helped a lot! it really is the most important meal of the day. I used to feel like a zombie all morning, now that I eat a real breakfast (coffee doesn't count) I feel much better.

Exercise.

None yet. stay tuned...

Productivity.

I use the extra time to get non work things done (email, read news, feeds, etc) so they don't become a distraction during the rest of the day.

Commute.

Zero traffic, clear streets. it takes me less than 10minutes to get to the office. Nice.

YouTube adds 'turn down the lights' option so you can focus on videos.

While watching a video on YouTube, I saw a new option on the page

There is a new button on the top right corner:

When you click on this button, everything on the page except the video playing goes dark, so you can focus your attention on the content.

I kind of like it, I usually view the videos full screen, but this is a nice feature.

Google has been making a lot of changes to YouTube lately:

Update: It seems that this option has been available since December 22, 2008, but it only appears for videos that are longer than 10 minutes.

dia de malas noticias para Google

Hoy google hizo una serie de anuncios, dos de ellos sobre recortes y ajustes en cuestion de reclutamiento y cambios en personal y cierre de oficinas.

También anuncio el cierre de varios productos:

Google Video (uploads) el servicio ahora solo es para busqueda de videos.
Google Catalogs.
Mashup Editor.
Dodgeball
Jaiku.

y por ultimo va a dejar de desarollar (aunque todavia seguira funcionando) Google Notebook

De todos estos, Google Notebook es el que mas me duele. Deje de usar bookmarks (locales o servicios como delicious) cuando salio Google Notebook.

La ventaja de poder comentar, tagear y no solo links sino parte de su contenido (fotos, texto, etc) es muy útil. Poder hacer una libreta compartida para hacer investigación colaborativa también era una ventaja muy poderosa de Google Notebook.

El servicio sigue funcionando, aunque ya no permiten nuevas cuentas, abra que empezar a buscar un reemplazo :-(

La crisis ya le llego a Google. esperemos que sean todos los anuncios de este tipo por parte de esa empresa este 2009 (aunque lo dudo)
