Every year we like to give blog readers a sense of how we use our “reading days.” Though I always feel pretty worn out after reviewing applications intensely for eight hours, there’s no denyng the pleasures of working at home. I asked Jeff to tell you about his reading day last week.

Unlike some of my colleagues who enjoy reading applications at local cafés, I prefer the comforts of my own home. Staying at home is nice because I can lounge around in my pajamas all day, and also because I am much more efficient. (In public, I have a hard time concentrating, as I am extremely nosey.) Not needing to leave the house has other advantages, especially on those cold, blustery winter mornings; however, this wasn’t the case last Wednesday, when it almost hit 60 degrees in Boston.

I have a routine that I stick to each reading day, although this time I diverged a bit, in order to prepare dinner for the evening. I woke up at 5:30 a.m. to prepare a crock pot recipe (Guinness Beef Stew) and to start a loaf of bread, so I wouldn’t need to cook at the end of a long reading day. After that was settled, I perched myself in my usual spot — the breakfast bar that that adjoins my kitchen and dining room (sunny and bright). My piles of applications were stacked, I had my favorite pen (Pilot G-2, Blue), and I had a hot latte (beverage preference dependent on time of day — latte, coffee, tea, or water). This is the scene:

My dog (Sydney) usually doesn’t hang out in the kitchen, but she could smell that something was cooking, and it smelled good. The mug featured is my favorite, which I purchased when I was in Shanghai recruiting this past September. (If you happen to make your way to Shanghai, check out Spin for some great pieces and prices.)

Anyway, back to the reading. It is great to have the opportunity to fully immerse myself in reading applications for an entire day. In the office, there are constant interruptions, and I find it hard to get through more than a handful in a day (if that). Learning about applicants’ interests and experiences is truly entertaining. So many of you are doing such interesting work that I often find myself wanting to change careers, but alas, I will live vicariously through you. Some of my favorite applications are from those who had previously applied and were unsuccessful in the admissions process. It’s nice to see how these applicants have taken time to develop their professional skills and hone their career interests.

After hours of reading and snacking (and a walk to the park with the dogs to enjoy the near 60 degree weather), I completed my reading, packed up the applications to go back to Fletcher, and enjoyed a delicious dinner. All in all, it was a good day.

Sydney and her friend, Baloo, hanging at Savin Hill Park.

The Hall of Flags is Fletcher’s town square. Everyone passes through here at some point in the day. Yesterday, to capture a little of the atmosphere, Jeff (my partner in on-location blogging) and I parked ourselves at a table (which we reserved, as if this were a restaurant), equipped with my laptop and a basic camera, and waited to see who came by. We made a slight miscalculation, having chosen a time when traffic was light, but the upside was that we had a chance to chat with everyone who visited the table.

When we set up camp, two students, Vanessa and Jon, were already in place at their own (better decorated) table. They’re raising funds for their participation in the Tufts Marathon Challenge. Jon is from New Orleans, so (in keeping with the season), they put out some plastic babies and called it King Cake. The cake, fortunately, looked better than the handwritten sign.

After chatting with Vanessa and Jon, we looked to see who else was around. Jamie, one of our volunteer interviewers from last fall, greets blog readers from the balcony.

Mollie (also an Admissions volunteer), Adam, and Khanh from Fletcher Students in Security were planning a reception that will take place during the DC Career Trip in a few weeks.

Bilal stopped by on his way to this week’s event in the “Denial and Deception” lunch/lecture series (organized by the Security Studies program), on practices and best practices throughout the intelligence community. He insisted that I should be in the photo.

Nick walked through while doing his work. We always enjoy chatting with him when he helps us out by keeping the office in order. He has also brought new life to one of the Admissions Office plants.

Shinhee (yet another Admissions volunteer) stopped by on her way from Prof. Babbitt’s office to an accounting class. Jeff told Shinhee (a musician) she should have brought her violin so that she could play for us. Next time!

My Fletcher Futbol friend Sebastian picked up a piece of cake. He was on his way to meet up with a student who had worked at an NGO he’s interested in.

Summer is also on her way to the “Denial and Deception” lunch/lecture. She’s looking spiffy for the special event.

Dan, Fletcher’s IT guru, was talking IT with Kevin, the face of the Hall. (Kevin would have been able to tell us when the HoF is at its busiest. Mental note to check in with him before we plan another on-location blog.)

Matt, also on the way to the lunch/lecture, stopped by. (Gonna be a busy luncheon!) Matt’s a PhD candidate who’s working in Oslo for the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs as a visiting research fellow. He’s on campus now to put the finishing touches on his formal dissertation proposal about organized crime and state security in West Africa (while working remotely for the Institute). Matt moved on to the PhD program from the MALD (like most of our PhD students). He has clocked many hours in the HoF, generally toting a coffee mug.

Morgan is on his way to accounting class, carrying the lunch that was lovingly prepared by his wife (complete with special notes). The word is that Morgan has the BEST lunches (and sometimes dinners) in that little cooler. Jeff and I are totally jealous!

Vanessa and Jon packed up their table. Why? The “Denial and Deception” lunch/lecture, of course. Vanessa says she can’t be late. The lecture runs on military time.

Tomo came out of his microfinance class where there were two guests from Spain. He’s off to have lunch with them.

Geoffrey was here to kick off the marketing of the Tufts Energy Conference — mailing cards to speakers from past years. The conference is coming up in April.

Vickie, Carolyn, Rachael, Naomi, Winnie, and Shuvam met up at the elevator. (They’re all in the photo, but not necessarily easy to find.)

Lily just came out of her class, and is chatting with Emily while waiting for others. She’s going to join Tomo for lunch with the microfinanciers from Spain.

Food for the “Denial and Deception” lunch! (Delivered with a smile by Dan from Dave’s Fresh Pasta, a Davis Square eatery that is a favorite source of food around here.)

Brand new Januarian Alessandra and soon-to-graduate second-year Charlie, were also coming from the microfinance class. This time I think to ask which class it is. The answer: Microfinance and Inclusive Commerce with Prof. Kim Wilson. Then, along comes Prof. Wilson. Jeff convinces her to join the photo. (Love Prof. Wilson’s red shoes!)

Kristen avoids the paparazzi on her way to the Tufts Educational Day Care Center for an appointment. (Fingers crossed that there will be space for little Lucia in the day care in September!) More relevant to Fletcher, Kristen was coming out of a discussion of the launch of a new initiative to offer conference calls with recent alums, during which current students can ask about job search tactics in particular industries or locations. The first conference call will be with a 2011 MIB alum and former Admissions intern, who will describe the process that landed him with a job in Brazil.

Once we let Kristen go, we noticed a crowd of people waiting for the elevator. More people from the microfinance class, including the Spanish visitors. They were very gracious in allowing Jeff to snap a couple of photos, and we learned they’re from ACAF in Barcelona.

Hanging out in the Hall of Flags was a fun way to connect with people we don’t see as often as we’d like, not to mention a real treat during this busy time of year for Admissions. After our allotted 45 minutes, Jeff and I packed up and went back to the office. We’re going to do this again, though. Next time, we’ll try for live blogging. Stay tuned!

I’m going to breeze straight past disappointing sports news from yesterday, and recall, instead, a happier weekend a couple of weeks back. That’s when much of Fletcher relocated to the mountains of Maine for the annual ski trip. I asked two students to describe the Sugarloaf experience.

Second-year student, Jenny, fills us in on the organization of the trip:

As a Fletcher student, I never get tired of hearing about the sense of community that students experience here at Fletcher. In fact, this is what attracted me to the MALD program in the first place. And now that I am a part of it, I completely understand what I had heard from Fletcher faculty, students, and staff. Fletcher’s annual ski trip to Sugarloaf Mountain Resort in Maine showed once again why the Fletcher community is so strong.

The annual ski trip is a student-organized event that you do not want to miss. It’s a chance for all of us to stretch our legs, put down our books, turn off our computers, and get some fresh air during a weekend away. The dedicated group of students who form the Ski Trip Committee work hard to organize and plan a trip that only strengthens the student community and creates great memories. Even though the resort is huge, and we are spread out in various cabins, you will always run into a fellow Fletcher student on the slopes, in the cafeteria, in the rental shop, or even in the cabin right next to you. In the evening, we all convene to show our support for our very own Fletcher band, Los Fletcheros, and share stories of skiing for the first time, falling hard on the slopes, or relaxing in the hot tub all day. Needless to say, we all thanked the student organizers for planning a great event.

The ski trip is just one example of how students help build a tight-knit community. Many Fletcher students are involved in planning events such as the Diplomat’s Ball, Fletcher Follies, the four cultural nights, and various speaker events that bring students together in a cultural, diverse, academic, and social environment. The ski trip shows that the community is not confined to Fletcher’s campus, but exists even when we are away from school. What connects all student-organized events is that they strengthen the community; and that is the Fletcher experience.

First-year student, Beth, wrote about her first experience with this Fletcher tradition:

The legendary Fletcher ski trip took place recently. While I was looking forward to it, I had no idea how it could live up to the expectations set by the second years. All through the fall semester, second years raved about last year’s trip and talked endlessly about the bonding experience. Somehow, I was doubtful that having 400 students spread over a mountain would really bring us that much closer, when we already spend endless hours together in class, the library, Mugar Café, and Davis Square.

Predictably, I was wrong. Without the distraction of homework and internship searches, our class finally had the chance to talk about everything else. Sitting on the ski lift, we chatted about sports, family ski trips, the prior night’s party, and our winter break. I noticed my friends getting to know other students better and forging new relationships. My classmates had always impressed me with their hobbies and skills, but I hadn’t had the chance to see most of their talents at work. Watching them instantly befriend new people, teach each other to ski, fearlessly take on a new sport, or fly down the mountain was truly impressive.

Everything I like about my classmates in school — their supportiveness, their inclusiveness, their confidence, and their sense of adventure — translated perfectly onto the mountain. As the second years had promised, the ski trip was an opportunity to see my classmates in a new light, and once again be impressed.

I know one thing I won’t be doing on Sunday afternoon or evening. I will not be speaking to my son, Josh. Why? Because Josh is a HUGE fan of the New England Patriots, and our local football team is playing in its first Super Bowl since 2008. (The less said about the 2008 game, the better.) All Josh’s Sunday energy will be tied up with willing the Patriots to victory, and a phone call from his mother will not be welcome.

Boston is a sports town, but it hasn’t always been the host of winning teams. Until, suddenly, it was. Now there’s an annual expectation that some team in some league should be winning. Not the Red Sox this year? The Bruins will take their place in local sports fans’ hearts. Hopes are riding high for the Patriots.

Fletcher, being an international community, includes many people with limited knowledge of American football. Into that information gap step second-year students Chris and Charlie, who have kindly offered a one-time seminar on the game. Inviting their fellow students to attend (via the Social List, of course), they said:

Every year in September, Americans go absolutely crazy.

We reconstruct our social lives so that we have nothing to do on the weekends and can spend hours in front of the TV. Our mental sanity is based on the success and/or failure of 18 and 19-year-old amateurs or 35-year-old professionals with reconstructed knees, hips, and ankles, and potential brain injuries. We spend billions of dollars to sit outside in the freezing cold or the blistering heat, only to get really, really angry.

Why do we do this? Because we love our football. Our American football. Our gridiron. This Sunday, the crazy will come to an insane peak. Over 100 million Americans will watch three hours of Super Bowl action between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

If you’re interested in learning about the game of football, then join us for an explanation of the sport, the industry, and the passion. In addition to being useful this Sunday, it might serve you in the future — around the water cooler, on a date, or even at a conference. We Americans love our sports (especially football) and often end up talking about it, probably more often than we should.

For those interested in the international relations side of American football, two players in the Super Bowl have noteworthy backgrounds. Mathias Kiwanuka, a player for the New York Giants, is the grandson of the first Prime Minister of Uganda, Benedicto Kiwanuka. And Sebastian Vollmer, a player for the New England Patriots, is the only German in the National Football League.

Trust Fletcher students to find the international angle! With the community educated, and my fingers crossed for Josh and all Boston sports nuts, we’re counting down to the game. Go Pats!

Trying to figure out where we are in the application review process, Laurie crunched some numbers yesterday. It seems that there are still 247 applications that were submitted by January 15 but aren’t complete. If your online recommenders submitted their letters (a necessary step before we can download your application), your file is nesting comfortably in a box, and our staff has sent you an email reminder about the missing materials. Please be sure to respond to the email. Is there a reason why your test scores, transcripts, or on-paper recommendations haven’t arrived yet? Tell us why. Can you offer a temporary substitute while we wait for the originals? It’s possible that, with such a placeholder, we’ll be able to go ahead and review your application.

On the other hand, if you know that your online recommender hasn’t submitted his/her letter, it’s probably time to unregister the recommender so that your application can leave cyberspace and arrive at our office. You’ll need to find another recommender, or ask the original recommender to email the letter to us. Even the best letter won’t have its maximum impact if it arrives a month late.

Blog readers already know that Fletcher students have talents that extend way beyond the classroom. Today, allow me to introduce Los Fletcheros. More accurately, I’ll let second-year student and part-time musician Jeffrey Fine do the introduction. He was writing in answer to my question, “Are you a Fletchero?” and to my request for information about the group:

I am a Fletchero — trumpet.

As a least-common-denominator, we are all from Fletcher, we like to play music to blow off steam, and we have a propensity for throwing epic musical bashes that attract a broad sampling of Fletcher students. More specifically, Los Fletcheros is an eight-piece band that has its roots in Fletcher’s cultural nights, but has since morphed into a venue-filling ensemble playing cover music from the jazz, funk, classic rock, pop, and alternative genres. We now have about five shows in the academic year, plus one epic gala at the annual ski trip. After graduating much talent last year, we recruited two new first-years who will be press-ganging new Fletcheros after six of us graduate in May.

Have musical talent? Keep the Fletcheros in mind when you’re deciding if Fletcher is the grad school for you. Otherwise, there may be pressure on the faculty to agree to the request from first-year Fletchero, Joe, to fail Jeff and other second-years Claire, Sam, Fred, Andrew, and Nick. Joe writes, “I mean, I wish them all the best, of course, but this is rock and roll!” Don’t let it come to this, future students. Instead, help out by joining Los Fletcheros in September.

This time of year can be a challenge for an admissions blogger. With the need to read applications whenever I can clear a block of time, but with other tasks still drawing my attention, I find it hard to sit down and generate a creative blog post. I’ve even asked students to report on a few events — but I don’t have time to look at what they’ve sent me right now. (That’s an indication of how overstretched my brain is feeling — that I don’t have energy to let other people do my work.)

So today’s post will just be a quick update on the topic at the forefront of most readers’ minds: Are we making progress in compiling and evaluative applications? And the answer is: Yes! Our crack team of student interns and the steady presence of a temporary staffer have resulted in a cleared table in our back office. No backlog of unopened mail — everything has been opened and filed, either in an alphabetical waiting area, or in your application folder. No backlog of applications waiting to be updated, either — if your application has been printed and your standardized test score report has arrived, that information has been added to your GAMS record. There are hundreds of applications ready for our student readers, and they’ve been maintaining a steady flow for us. We’re in good shape!

The lack of a backlog is particular good news for you. This is the point when those of you whose application was complete on January 15 will be able to find accurate information on GAMS. But please note that, if your online recommenders only submitted their letters today, you’ll still need to give us some time to print and update your file.

A very quick word to PhD applicants. Your applications are well down the pipeline. The Admissions Committee has completed its first round of evaluation and professors are reviewing dissertation proposals. Final evaluation will start in February and continue until March.

I’ll be back next week with, I hope, restored creativity.

Vacationing students kept busy on their winter breaks by hosting coffee hours. Extending the reach of the community, we’re thrilled at how successful the coffee hours have been. Here are a few reports from the hosts.

MA student Aaron drank coffee in Portland.
I hosted my coffee hour at the Public Domain in Portland, Oregon. Seeing as how it was on the West Coast of the U.S., some of the folks who attended drove an hour or two to make it, including me. I was expecting three prospective students, but five showed up and a few folks stopped by my table to check out the brochures and Fletcher name tent I had set up.

The biggest question from my prospective applicants was about the Fletcher “profile.” Not an easy answer, since I’d say there isn’t one — we’ve got musicians, engineers, athletes, lawyers, military officers, journalists, NGO/Peace Corps volunteers, etc. Your studies and experience are what count, not where you’re from or what you look like. Another important point of discussion concerned what people do after Fletcher, and my suggestion was to check the list of Prominent Alumni on Wikipedia — you can get a pretty good idea of the alumni network and career fields, and where you think they fit in with your personal goals.

LLM student Chris drank his coffee in Berlin, Germany.
My coffee hour took place in the center of Berlin, at Café Humboldterrassen overlooking the Berlin Dome and the Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island’s most famous museum, the Pergamon Museum, shares something important with Fletcher — it was completed in 1933, just when our school was founded. Three people showed up at the gathering, including Tufts alum. After a brief introduction, I kicked off the evening with some insights from campus life and what makes our school a very special one. And to be sure, sitting there, telling the others about Fletcher made me realize once again what an extraordinary experience it is to be part of the Fletcher community. Where else can you have breakfast with a Pakistani, lunch with a Kenyan, go for dinner with a French student, and party with a Chinese, all while your Australian study group fellow is complaining about the winter weather?

MALD student Kate and MIB student Michael joined forces to drink coffee in Minneapolis.
Kate reports, “We had a great group of engaged, curious prospective students, including a sophomore in college. Pretty impressive to see a young Fletcherite in training. I really enjoyed sharing our personal stories about how we chose Fletcher, as it reminded me yet again why this is the place for me. It made me excited and anxious to get back to campus.”

And Michael added that, “Nearly the entire groups of six prospective students stayed for the full two hours. I’ve fielded several follow-up questions from individuals and have made introductions to other Fletcher students as well.”

Sooyeon met students in Seoul.
I took my laptop with me to the Fletcher Coffee Hour, Seoul edition, half expecting to keep myself busy for the next two hours. To my pleasant surprise, the first prospective student introduced herself three minutes before the scheduled start time, and five others joined her soon thereafter. The students didn’t come and go, they came and stayed. Most of the visitors were in the process of finishing up their application (as the deadline was less than two weeks away), but some were considering applying to Fletcher a year or two in the future. They came with many questions, and as I was sharing my personal experience and views of Fletcher, it was a pleasant reminder to me that Fletcher was where I belonged. For those who came to learn more about Fletcher, I hope I was able to offer some insights that may not come across while looking at a web page, and I hope they were able to gauge whether Fletcher is a good fit for them.

This is a Fletcher story: Of the community that connects us, and about one person’s achievement in uniting the community while improving the world.

The guy on the left in the photo above is Ben Sklaver. Ben graduated from Fletcher in 2003 and, having volunteered for the Army Reserve, was commissioned when he graduated. While on active duty in the Horn of Africa, Ben spent considerable time in northern Uganda, where his work often focused on improving access to safe drinking water. Upon his return to the U.S. in 2007, he founded a non-profit, ClearWater Initiative, to continue that work. ClearWater says that, in its first two years, Ben’s efforts helped provide clean water to several thousand Ugandans, prompting many in the region to refer to him as “Moses Ben.”

In 2009, Ben was redeployed, this time to Afghanistan, where he worked in a civil affairs unit performing work similar to what he had done in Uganda. On October 2, 2009, at age 32, he was killed by a suicide bomber while on foot patrol in in Kandahar province.

The loss of its visionary leader didn’t stop ClearWater. The organization says that:

Since Ben’s death, we have worked to fulfill his vision of compassion and hope for those whose lives are challenged by strife and uncertainty. Our goal has remained the same: to bring water and, ultimately, health and opportunity to those far less fortunate than we are, and in doing this, we have facilitated access to clean water for nearly 7,000 people. ClearWater Initiative is now a full-time operation with staff in the U.S. and Uganda. For our fifth anniversary year, we will implement 20 projects in hard-to-reach areas of northern Uganda. We are proud of all we have accomplished and know that Ben would be amazed to see how far ClearWater has come.

People who have been around Fletcher for a while haven’t forgotten Ben or his story, but he and ClearWater were brought back to my attention recently via a letter from ClearWater’s (volunteer) CEO (and Ben’s classmate), David Abraham ’03. About Ben, David wrote:

I admired him for his integrity, his respect for others and his decency that sprung from deep within. He was younger than me, but still would act as an older brother. He had a wisdom and also a vision of how he could make the world a better place, but never grandiose visions of curing the world of all its ills — just the part he touched. He searched for creative yet simple solutions to solve complex and seemingly intractable problems in remote parts of the globe. Inaction was anathema to Ben. While others talked, he acted.

Along the way, Ben’s Fletcher peers have stepped forward to support, many in a highly active way, his vision. David’s letter mentions classmates who volunteer as trustees, fundraisers, technical advisors, and overall enthusiastic supporters. The most recent newsletter highlights a Fletcher alum volunteering in Uganda. Finally, David goes on to say, “ClearWater is the embodiment of the Fletcher ethos, that through compassion, understanding and dialogue, we can make the world that much better. ClearWater is a piece of us all. And I hope you will continue to support us, and help forward Ben’s legacy.”
