A visitor discovered 70+ year-old Donna Munson's body being fed upon by a bear near her home in in Ouray, Colorado. For 10 years Munson, and others at the household, had been feeding bears near the porch–despite repeated warnings from police and the Colorado Division of Wildlife. A wire fence was erected on the porch as a means of protection by the household, reported CBS4Denver and the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Sheriff's deputies investigating the incident  were approached by an aggressive, five-year-old, 250-pound bear (the type was not identified) which they subsequently shot and killed. A necropsy, an autopsy of animals, performed by Colorado State University Diagnostic Lab in Grand Junction could not determine whether the bear was involved in feeding on Munson's body. Sheriff's deputies also shot and killed a second 394-pound bear at the household; it has not been confirmed whether the larger bear killed Munson. An autopsy performed on Munson, and released on Monday, revealed that the cause of death was mauling.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife–which vigorously supports an anti-bear feeding education campaign and uses the slogan "a fed bear is a dead bear"– threatened legal action against the woman's household last year for repeatedly denying their warnings. Several previous bears were also trapped on the property and later euthanized.

I just came across a couple of web pages online that share information about mineral rights that I thought you might find interesting or useful. For many the concept of separating mineral rights from surface rights is misunderstood and rightfully so as they have never had to deal with this on their residential lot where they currently live. But as we as a Country strive for more energy independence this information will become more important to know and understand.

First is a web page Geology.com that I really enjoy following their RSS feed as I get all kinds of interesting tidbits of information from it and I noticed they have a pretty good comprehensive article about Mineral Rights in general. Check it out, I think you will also find it informative.

And in Colorado the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission is the governing body that oversees all of the Oil and Gas drilling and they have a page of frequently asked questions that you might also find informative here: Frequently Asked Questions about Mineral and Surface Rights .

Owning mineral rights may put you in a situation of earning an income from the royalties paid on extracting the coalbed methane gas. Currently it is very unusual to find mineral rights that can be purchased with a property but at the time of creating this post we do have two properties that have mineral rights available either with the purchase or separately and they are:

1. The property on which the collection takes place is residential property, and
2. The landowner uses a well, or is legally entitled to a well, for the water supply, and
3. The well is permitted for domestic uses according to Section 37-92-602, C.R.S.,
(generally, this means the permit number will be five or six digits with no “-F” suffix at the
end), and
4. There is no water supply available in the area from a municipality or water district, and
5. The rainwater is collected only from the roof, and
6. The water is used only for those uses that are allowed by, and identified on, the well
permit.

If you intend to use a system for rooftop precipitation capture you will need to complete form GWS-78

The Colorado Division of Water Resources has posted a pdf with more information that we have included here….Rain Water Bill for your convenience. We recommend that with this Bill being so new to check their web page frequently for updates and the new forms that are required.

If you need to locate your well permit to verify if it complies with the new law you can do that on the Colorado Well View Web page. If you find that your well was not transferred into your name when you purchased the property you should fill out the Change of Well Ownership form right away.

Be sure to check for updated forms on the States Colorado Division of Water Resources website forms page also.

We personally never understood the old law making it illegal to collect your rainwater from your roof so this is a major step for the State of Colorado to allow any rainwater collection and we applaud the State for stepping into the 21st Century by allowing this even if it is on a limited basis.

What is really awesome is that you can also elect not to drill a water well and just use your rainwater for limited uses without actually drilling a water well. We have known people in other states that have been able to supply most, if not all, of their household water needs by collecting their rainwater.

Let's face it we are moving into their backyard and while our state's required 35 acre minimum parcel size leaves a lot of room for both wildlife and humans it also makes it easier for wildlife encounters. In fact the Colorado Division of Wildlife say that Bears have People Problems….because they are just being bears. Over the years of living in the Southern Colorado Mountains we have seen and heard lots of experiences and encounters with mostly Black Bears. We don't see many mountain lions or hear much about them but they are certainly here. Check out this photo taken in June 2009 just outside a friend's RV on Santa Fe Trail Ranch.

Seeing a Mountain Lion is very rare in this area and in fact we have only seen the tail of one or two since 1995 when we moved to this area and we are on property multiple times each week. While we realize this is a rare opportunity to photograph a mountain lion this close up we also realize that they are closer than we might think even if we don't see them. You have to be aware of their presence at all times.

Here is what you will want to do to use these Topo Maps.

1. Download the Quick Start Guide http://nationalmap.gov/digital_map/quickstart.pdf

2. The go to the Digital Map Store

3. On the Right Hand Side of the page you can type in the Zip Code for Trinidad Colorado which is 81082, or for Weston Colorado 81091, Aguilar 81020 or Walsenburg 81089 and that will get to close to the area where you want. Just navigate from there on the Google Map to the area that you want the topo map of.

4. Just below the map on the left corner click the Yellow "Show DigiMaps" button.

5. After you find the location that you want on the map, double click on the map and a Red Marker will appear.

6. Click on the Red Marker and a popup window will tell you the USGS Map Quadrangle Name and give you some options for which maps are available for download. Click on the download link of the map that you want and save it to your computer.

7. You will want to also download the TerraGo Toolbar for Adobe Reader and it will give you more features to use with the topo such as the ability to view maps with multiple coordinate displays, measure length and area, turn layers on and off and search map attributes.
