Dear Kathy,

You’re right. There is no need to rush your kid to adolescent drug rehab after a couple of Marlboro lites. But there is a link between smoking and alcohol. (Just check out an NA or AA meeting to see.)

Nicotine often ramps up the craving for alochol, and cigarettes can ramp up the effects of alcohol. (Vicious cycle, I know.)

I think the best thing to do is have an open and honest conversation with your kid about what’s going on in a non-judgemental way. You might get more info than you think.

3. For a teen or adolescent who already has a Christian upbrining, a faith based drug rehab program can be a good way to reach them.
4. Though data is hard to come by….some Christian drug rehab centers do boast some startling success rates.

Christian Drug Rehab Cons

1. Not all drug rehab centers are created equal, and this is even more so with Christian drug rehab centers. If the emphasis is too far away from standard, accepted forms of addiction therapy, than the client can miss out on a thoroughly transformative experience.
2. If the young teen or adolescent has no Christian background, or that background is fraught with emotional radioactivity, than I would look in a direction.

The best thing to do as a parent or loved one is ask: what would make the most comfortable adolescent drug rehab. You’re trying to heal–and break addiction–not convert.

If Christian drug rehab is the adolescent drug rehab program is the one that will do that, then by all means get that young person in rehab today.

During rehab, your adolescent is given specialized individual and group therapy, along with family counseling to help deal with any underlying issues that may be exacerbating the addictive behavior.

Again, emphasizing to the adolescent that they do have a problem–and that their current behavioral pattern will have dire future conesquences–is one of the pillars of adolescent drug rehab.

Adolescent Drug Rehab Question No.3: How Do I Know if My Child Needs It?

Teens and tweens can be moody on the best of days, so sensing there might be a substance abuse problem can be tricky.

Here are a few warning signs to keep an eye out for:

• Disheveled appearance, lack of pride in how they look
• Sudden weight loss
• Loss of ambition or interest in…well…anything
• Gaunt face; bloodshot eyes
• Tracks marks on legs or arms
• Series of unexplained absesences at schoolwork
• Violent outbursts and sudden emotional changes
• Frequent car accidents or unexplained damage to one’s automobile
