I know my kid is a good kid. And I don’t want to freak out, but I’ve smelled cigaretes on his breath a few times. Should I be worried about it leading to something else?

Am I overreacting? Don’t think I need to send my kid to teen drug rehab over this.

But should I be concerned?

Dear Kathy,

You’re right. There is no need to rush your kid to adolescent drug rehab after a couple of Marlboro lites. But there is a link between smoking and alcohol. (Just check out an NA or AA meeting to see.)

Nicotine often ramps up the craving for alochol, and cigarettes can ramp up the effects of alcohol. (Vicious cycle, I know.)

I think the best thing to do is have an open and honest conversation with your kid about what’s going on in a non-judgemental way. You might get more info than you think.

Christian drug rehab is, obviously, a rehabilitation setting where much of the recovery focuses on shifting the addiction to a relationship with God.

Most faith-based drug rehab centers don’t require a belief in Christianity to be their sole addiction-coping mechanism.

But there’s no question that there is an emphasis–as it should, I mean Christian is in the name–of the values of this form of adolescent drug rehab.

What most people want to know is….does it work?

So here are a few pros and cons–as a drug rehab professional sees them–of sending your young teen or adolescent to one of these.

Christian Drug Rehab Pros

Not that different from secular adolescent drug rehab–just the higher power is identified.

Some programs focus on a relationship with God–and less on the addiction itself–which can be good for some clients do not respond well to criticism.

For a teen or adolescent who already has a Christian upbrining, a faith based drug rehab program can be a good way to reach them.

Though data is hard to come by….some Christian drug rehab centers do boast some startling success rates.

Christian Drug Rehab Cons

Not all drug rehab centers are created equal, and this is even more so with Christian drug rehab centers. If the emphasis is too far away from standard, accepted forms of addiction therapy, than the client can miss out on a thoroughly transformative experience.

If the young teen or adolescent has no Christian background, or that background is fraught with emotional radioactivity, than I would look in a direction.

The best thing to do as a parent or loved one is ask: what would make the most comfortable adolescent drug rehab. You’re trying to heal–and break addiction–not convert.

If Christian drug rehab is the adolescent drug rehab program is the one that will do that, then by all means get that young person in rehab today.

It’s every parent’s nightmare: that the child they once held in their arms as a baby might someday get involved, possibly addicted, to drugs and/or alcohol.

If you find yourself struggling to deal with a son or daughter who has a substance abuse problem, and have considered the option of adolescent drug rehab, you might have questions. Such as how does it work, what is it, what do I do next?

Here is a no-nonsense guide to understanding what adolescent drug rehabilitation is-and whether it might help your child finally free themselves from their substance abuse issues.

Adolescent Drug Rehab Question No.1: Is it Like Adult Rehabilitation?

Both adult rehab and child/teen rehab are focused on the same thing: to get the person off of drugs or alchohol and give them coping mechanisms for staying healthy and sober.

But treatment methods can be quite different. Oftentimes one of the biggest challenges in treating young people with substance abuse problems is getting them to accept that they might actually have a problem; teens and adolescents haven’t usually hit a "bottom" as devestating as that experenced by lifelong addicts.

Another difference is that adolescent drug rehab usually has education servces; many times the clients are still attending school. Most teen drug rehab centers have tutoring and GED services on-site to ensure the client doesnt’ fall behind in school.

Adolescent Drug Rehab Question No.2: What is Offered With Adolescent Drug Rehab?

Like its adult counterpart, adolescent drug rehab, especially the residential variety, begins with a healthy detox and then a set period of rehabilitation, usually from 30-90 days.

During rehab, your adolescent is given specialized individual and group therapy, along with family counseling to help deal with any underlying issues that may be exacerbating the addictive behavior.

Again, emphasizing to the adolescent that they do have a problem–and that their current behavioral pattern will have dire future conesquences–is one of the pillars of adolescent drug rehab.

Adolescent Drug Rehab Question No.3: How Do I Know if My Child Needs It?

Teens and tweens can be moody on the best of days, so sensing there might be a substance abuse problem can be tricky.

Here are a few warning signs to keep an eye out for:

Disheveled appearance, lack of pride in how they look

Sudden weight loss

Loss of ambition or interest in…well…anything

Gaunt face; bloodshot eyes

Tracks marks on legs or arms

Series of unexplained absesences at schoolwork

Violent outbursts and sudden emotional changes

Frequent car accidents or unexplained damage to one’s automobile

These are just a few of the signposts that there might be a problem with your child. If you do suspect that there might be a substance abuse problem be sure to contact a licensed professional to get the info—and peace of mind—you and your family needs.
