Jose Mourinho expects Premier League return after Real Madrid

2013-02-13T01:42:00.000-08:00

Jose Mourinho says he will return to England when he leaves Real Madrid - but reckons he will not get the chance to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Mourinho, whose side face United in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg, is tipped to leave the Bernabeu in the summer after a dismal Spanish title defence and amid reports he has fallen out with several key players.
The former Chelsea boss refused to clarify whether or not he would be at Real next season but confirmed his desire to be back in the Premier League.

He told reporters: "I will go back to England after Real Madrid. We will see (when that is).
"I love everything (about England). England will be my next step."
Mourinho has been linked with Manchester City and former club Chelsea but joked he would not take over from 71-year-old Ferguson.
"No," he said, when asked if he could replace the Scot. "I think we have to end our career at the same time. Him at 90 and me at 70."

"Real Madrid have won nine, I have won two. Real Madrid wants to win its 10th. I want my third."

Real are a massive 16 points behind arch-rivals Barcelona in La Liga but Mourinho warned his critics to hold fire, insisting he was gunning to steer the club to a record 10th Champions League crown.
"At the end we can assess the season," he added.
"There are great clubs in the world who have never won this competition.
"Real Madrid have won nine, I have won two. Real Madrid wants to win its 10th. I want my third."
Mourinho insists he is still enjoying his work and midfielder Michael Essien claimed the manager always has a smile on his face.
However, there is no escaping his fractious relationship with those who follow Madrid's fortunes so closely, as he pointed out when asked to comment on the Spanish newspaper depiction of Wayne Rooney as a "hooligan" this morning.

United's route to last 16

"I didn't read it," said Mourinho. "I don't know if it was written in that context, calling him a hooligan, or completely different.
"But if I can say one thing on behalf of Rooney, I was called worse than that, week by week."

‘iPhone 5S': Photos Of New iPhone Surfaces

2013-02-13T01:38:00.000-08:00

New photos of Apple’s alleged ‘iPhone 5S’ have surfaced on a Chinese technology website, supposedly revealing that, just as the iPhone 4S looked basically identical to the iPhone 4, Apple’s newest upcoming iPhone model will look identical to the current flagship iPhone 5.

According to the rumor, Apple’s new iPhone 5S is already in production.

The photos, if real, were certainly hurriedly snapped by someone fearfully of being caught and are poor quality, but do show electronic calipers in almost every shot reveal relative size, apparently the same as the iPhone 5.

Football updates: Sturridge misses Brazil game

2013-02-04T10:43:00.001-08:00

England striker Daniel Sturridge has been ruled out of Wednesday's friendly international against Brazil @ Wembley due to a thigh injury. Sturridge reported for duty at St George's Park on Sunday evening with the remainder of the squad but was unable to take part in training on Monday morning and returned to his club Liverpool for further treatment. The 23-year-old was injured during the first half of Liverpool's 2-2 draw at Manchester City, shortly after scoring the Reds' opening goal, but was not substituted until the closing stages of the game. Sturridge's withdrawal leaves England boss Roy Hodgson with only two fit strikers at this stage - Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck - after Tottenham's Jermain Defoe pulled out with an ankle problem, although Hodgson does also have the option of playing Theo Walcott up front. Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick also dropped out on Sunday with a hip injury.

Football updates: Cech injury worry for Chelsea

2013-02-04T10:37:00.001-08:00

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech could be facing a fresh spell on the sidelines after suffering a broken finger during Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Newcastle. Cech, who missed three games last month with a groin injury, broke his little finger in what was an impressive display from the 30-year-old at St James' Park, despite the Blues being beaten in the Premier League clash. It is not yet known how long the Blues goalkeeper will be sidelined, but it has been confirmed he will miss the Czech Republic's friendly against Turkey in Manisa on Wednesday after a scan revealed a fracture in his finger.

Kalou Pays Mikel $5,000 Bet After Eagles Won

2013-02-04T10:27:00.001-08:00

Ivory Coast midfielder Salomon Kalou confirmed he has paid John Obi Mikel $5,000 following a bet regarding the outcome of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final tie against Nigeria on Sunday. The two African powerhouses clashed at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium for a place in the last-four, with the Super Eagles emerging 2-1 victors after Sunday Mba cancelled out Cheick Tiote's equaliser following Emmanuel Emenike's 42nd-minute opener. Speaking after the game, Kalou revealed the bet with his former Chelsea team-mate, and said he has stuck to his word and paid up.

Mario hits winner

2013-02-04T03:16:00.001-08:00

Mario Balotelli signed off his AC Milan debut by scoring the winner with the last kick of the match as Udinese were defeated 2-1 amid controversial scenes at the San Siro on Sunday night. All eyes were on the mercurial Italy striker following his £19million arrival from Manchester City and he duly delivered a clinical brace, his first goal arriving in the 24th minute. Gianpiero Pinzi pulled Udinese level in the second half and as Milan drifted towards a draw, Balotelli's head appeared to drop. But he snatched up the ball with glee when Stephan El Shaarawy won a suspicious penalty from Thomas Heurtaux in the final minute of injury time. Despite Udinese's angry protestations - Heurtaux appeared to make a clean tackle - Balotelli kept his head from the spot to fire his new employers into fourth place in Serie A.

Sport; Mancini still has title hope

2013-02-04T03:12:00.001-08:00

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini insists the title race is not over despite his team's 2-2 home draw with Liverpool. The situation could have been worse for City in the Premier League clash at the Etihad on Sunday had Sergio Aguero not scored 12 minutes from time to rescue a point. "Last year we recovered eight points in six games so I don't know why it can't happen this year," said Mancini. "They have to play in the FA Cup and the Champions League so the season is long - three months - and we are confident. It is enough to recover three or four points in three games. "For us it is important to play the derby two or three points behind and we have time to recover these points. We didn't play like we had in the last month but we are confident. "Two years ago Chelsea were nine points behind and when they went to play at Old Trafford two games from the end they were only two points behind. "I don't think this is finished but probably now we have to win all the games but if not then 11 or 12 games. But in football this can happen sometimes." Edin Dzeko put the hosts in front before strikes from Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard turned the game in favour of Liverpool. Mancini felt aggrieved that play had not stopped in the build-up to Sturridge's goal after Dzeko was challenged by Daniel Agger. He said: "I think Liverpool played a good game. Weconceded two goals, stupid goals for me. "But before the first goal there was a big foul - if it had happened with us, probably there would have been a red card. "Instead, the referee and linesman did not see anything. In the end, though, I think it was the right result." Asked if he felt Liverpool should have put the ball out when Dzeko was left on the turf by Agger, Mancini said: "Probably, because after this foul I think there were several seconds (before the goal). "I think so, but this can happen. I think it was a foul and should have been a yellow card. The rules are the same for everyone always."

IcePrince Turns Down Globacom’sEndorsement Deal

2013-02-03T15:05:00.001-08:00

Ice Prince has turned down an endorsement deal from major telecom company Globacom. Insiders said during the week, that the rapper was approached with a mouth watering deal to become the brand’s latest ambassador because of his recent successes -the release his first official single ‘Oleku‘, his many local and international awards, and his bestselling debut album ‘Everybody Loves Ice Prince’ in 2011. But Panshak Zamani doesn’t come cheap. We’re told he’s asking for a whooping sum of $1m (N157,000,000) or no deal. ‘He was serious, he knows his worth and knows they can afford it so he turned the deal down‘, our insider at GLO who wants to remain anonymous said Most GLO ambassadors are paid within the N10- N20m range, with D’banj and Psquare being the rare exceptions. Psquare got N240m for a four year deal It remains uncertain if GLO is upping the figures for the Chocolate city rapper. But if they concede to Ice’s demands, he’ll become the rapper with the biggest endorsement deal ever. But Ice Prince is cool with that (no pun intended). In the last 20 months, the rapper has become the highest-earning Nigerian rapper, with revenue sources including concert fees and endorsements (he inked a deal with LG in 2012) as well as non-music related deals no one is wiling to talk about. The rapper’s management has denied the telecoms approached their team. ‘We didn’t get any offer from them, I just confirmed from my team, there’s been no offer’, a rep for Ice Prince says.

"Tb Joshua I Love You" - Screamed OgenyiOnazi

2013-02-03T15:01:00.001-08:00

As soon as the final whistle went off after the Nigeria vs Cote D'Ivoire game, both players and officials ran onto the pitch in sheer delight, screaming and hugging each other with big smiles. Against every expectation, the Super Eagles had triumphed over the Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire and were heading to face Mali i the semi-finals. However, one interesting celebration caught the eye. As Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi rejoiced, facing a camera, he mouthed the words: "T.B.Joshua, I love you." Whatever that means, we can't tell Nigerians are conversant with Prophet T.B. Joshua's many predictions, including claims that he had warned Stephen Keshi, about conceding in the last minutes against Burkina Faso.

Jonathan Thanks Eagles For “Masterly AndSuperlative Performance”

2013-02-03T14:48:00.001-08:00

President Goodluck Jonathan today thanked the Super Eagles for the “masterly and superlative performance” in their quarter final clash with the Elephants of Ivory Coast. In a tweet by the Special Adviser on Media to the president, Reuben Abati, he said “President Jonathan thanks the Super Eagles for their masterly and superlative performance in the just-concluded AFCON encounter with CIV”. Nigeria were tagged under dogs as soon as it was clear whom their next opponent will be after the group stage of the African Cup of Nations in South Africa. However goals by Emmanuel Emenike and Sunday Mba gave Nigeria a 2-1 victory over tournament favourites Ivory Coast. Newcastle midfielder Cheikh Tiote scored for the Ivorians minutes after the second half resumed. A social media mockery began with Ivorian defender, Emmanuel Eboue, labeling the Eagles #SuperFriedChickens that will be devoured by the Ivorians. Nigeria will now face Mali in the semi final on Wednesday, 6th February 2013 at the Mombela Stadium by 20:30 Central African Time. Is this inappropriate?

2013-01-17T13:23:00.002-08:00

Bishop Larry Trotter, a senior pastor of the Sweet Holy Spirit Church in Chicago posted this photo of himself and his 4year old granddaughter in a bathtub on his Instagram page.

A number of people went ham on the popular Bishop after the photo was posted online. Many feel it's inappropriate interactions with a minor because they are both topless in the photo. One person wrote

No man should ever ever ever take a bath with a female in his family or friends. That’s only for a man and his wife! This is totally inappropriate behavior!

The bishop defended himself by saying that while taking a bubble bath, his grand daughter, who was visiting with her parents for the weekend, came in the bathroom and asked him if she could get in the tub. He said yes, and it was the girl's mother who took the photograph. Is it inappropriate?

Sir Alex Ferguson praises Robin van Persie but says there is more to Manchester United than just him

2013-01-17T13:22:00.000-08:00

Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected claims that Manchester United are turning into a one-man team.

Much has been made of Robin van Persie's impact since his arrival at Old Trafford last summer, but Ferguson insists there is more to his team than the in-form Dutch striker.
Van Persie has scored 10 goals in his last 10 appearances and earned warm praise from his manager, but Ferguson is anxious to point out that he is not their only threat.
"I don't go along with the idea we have become a one-man team," Ferguson told United Review.
"There was a time in our history when one man did carry us for a while. Eric Cantona kept us in contention with his goals when a few others were off the boil.
"But things are quite different now. Javier Hernandez has weighed in with 12 goals while Wayne Rooney is currently on nine.
"Two defenders, Johnny Evans and Patrice Evra, have chipped in with eight between them so it doesn't stand up to see us as a one-man band overly dependent on van Persie, brilliant as he has been at both making and taking goals.
"He is absolutely relishing his new challenge. He is the right player, at the right club, at the right time.
"He has a winning mentality, but as he points out, it is one that goes right through the squad and one that will hopefully see us push on in both league and the cups and successfully navigate what is a busy and challenging period."

Keshi: I will risk NPL stars

2013-01-17T13:05:00.001-08:00

Super Eagles Head Coach Stephen Keshi has said he is willing to take a chance on players from the Nigeria league at the AFCON because it is worth it.

Keshi has picked six players from the NPL for this AFCON, a clear departure from the 2008 and 2010 tournaments when no player from the domestic league made the final squad.

Goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim, defenders Godfrey Oboabona, Azubuike Egwuekwe, midfielder Gabriel Reuben as well as forwards Sunday Mba and Ejike Uzoenyi play their football in the local league and have made the final cut for this competition in South Africa.

“Football is a game of risks. At the 1990 Nations Cup when the likes of Daniel Amokachi came in, about 80% of the players were from the local. It’s a risk worth taking,” declared Keshi, who has worked with these players since December 2011.

The former international skipper will not promise Nigeria a third Nations Cup trophy but said the team are confident and will give their best.

“I don’t want to promise Nigerians anything, I am not going to give any assurance but I will do my best with the team in South Africa,” he said.

“The level of discipline is great, good atmosphere. I hope the confidence will be sustained at the AFCON.

“If there is any pressure on me to perform at the Nations Cup, it is pressure from me not from any other quarters. We are not under any pressure to win.”

Keshi also stated that he hopes to again work with Portland Timber striker Bright Dike who he dropped from the AFCON final squad.

“Dike will be a good goal getter for Nigeria in the future. I dropped him because the time was short for me to impact on him as I wanted. It was difficult for me to name the 23-man squad,” Keshi admitted.

Her friend also revealed doctors had allowed Penny to take a photograph of her old heart before it was cremated. According to Kelsey's profile, she had wanted to take her heart home but doctors refused.
She said: "She wanted to keep it but they wouldn't let her! I said the same thing. It had to be cremated but she kept the ashes."

Things You Didn't Know About Maryam Abacha

2013-01-17T12:36:00.001-08:00

1-On the 8th of December, 2011, five armed robbers stormed her residence in Nasarawa Quarters, Kano State. While in action, policemen swooped on them, arrested one but four escaped with the former First Lady's jewelry. After a year of search, the Nigerian Police was able to apprehend the other four robbers and they recovered her jewelry worth N30 million. The jewels included 42 pieces of gold earrings, five pieces of gold rings, five pieces of gold pendants, five sets of gold jewelry and 26 pieces of gold chains (See picture for some of the recovered jewelry). Some of the robbers were shot dead in the process.

2-Following the United Nations declaration of 1994 as the International Year of the Family, she launched her private initiative in September 1994, it was called the Family Support Programme (FSP) and it was to replace the Better Life for Rural Women established by the late First Lady, Maryam Babangida. From that time, each state was also to have a Commissioner for Women Affairs. Whatever happened to FSP today, Iyaniwura does not know. It is baffling that Nigerian First Ladies keep establishing all kinds of programmes that they will not sustain outside office. According the the Tell Magazine of 3rd August, 1998, FSP gulped more than N10 billion of taxpayers' money, the same time during which her husband was retrenching civil servants.

3-Believed by many to be the most beautiful First Lady Nigeria has ever had, she has one of the most impressive collections of diamonds, gold, platinum and pearls.

4-Her mum, Nana Jiddah is Kanuri born of a Borno princess with German roots. She is also a direct descendant of Sheikh Ibrahim Waidama, an Arab who settled in Kanem-Borno in the 16th and 17th centuries. So, you get the blood thoroughly mixed. And that's where the beauty comes from, I guess.

5-While talking of her late husband, she said he was not authoritarian in the house and was a loving father, that they all slept in the same room with the kids, even when they were grown-ups. She said he would cook while she did the dishes. How romantic! Abi? When the babies were crying, he would bring out his bosom or his own ear for the kids to suck until they slept off. Amazing!

6. They had really simple and romantic petnames. She called him 'S' while he called her 'M'. Those were there nicknames back in the days.

7-She raised the idea of the National Hospital for Women and Children (NHWC) and later saw to its establishment. The institution is now known as National Hospital, Abuja. As First Lady, she raised money and built the hospital within 10 months, which was later commissioned by General Abdulsalami Abubakar on May 21, 1999, a week to handover.

8-Following the death of her husband in 1998, Newswatch report showed that she accused Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Timbut Useni of being responsible, an allegation that he flatly and vehemently denied. She had based this on the fact that the Lt. Gen. Useni and the Chief Security Officer, CSO, Major Hamza al-Mustapha were the last to see the late head of state.

9-In November 2012, at the book launch of her former military press secretary, Colonel John Adache (rtd), she donated a sum of N5 million naira upon which she was loudly applauded. She was the Mother of the Day at the event and the Chief Launcher had donated a sum of N 2 million naira. She stole the show and the whole hall erupted in a loud ovation. #Smh.

10-She has nine children, six sons, three daughters. They include Ibrahim (now late), Mohammmed, Abba, Sodiq, Abdullahi, Gumsu (Fatima Bayero Fadil) and Zaynab. She actually gave birth to her last born while her husband was the head of state. I can remember the newspapers carrying it, quite exciting news then for the First Lady to become a mother again.

11-While the First Lady, she popularized the use of 'Aso Oke'.

12-Shortly after the death of her husband, the Khalifa, she was stopped at the Aminu Kano International Airport with 38 suitcases filled with foreign currencies. She was on her way out of the country but denied it as a 'fabrication'.

13-As at 2000 alone, her family had hired over 12 lawyers to defend them and one of those lawyers was the American lawyer, Johnny Cochran, the defense attorney for O. J. Simpson.

14-Her eldest son, Ibrahim, died when a Falcon jet of the Nigerian Air Force Presidential Fleet ferrying him and his friends from Lagos to Kano crashed on the 17th of January, 1996 just minutes to landing at the Aminu Kano International Airport. He was with Funmi, his Yoruba girlfriend and a younger brother of Aliko Dangote. All 14 people aboard died. A lawyer and businessman, Ibrahim Abacha was described as very nice, extremely humble, easygoing and gentle, he was 28. Upon his tragic death, Maryam Abacha was shattered and had to leave for Saudi Arabia where she stayed temporarily, prayed, meditated and sought for consolation in her faith and God.

15-She said she used to send book gifts to the former US First Lady, Hillary Clinton but the gifts were never acknowledged.

16-Shortly after the sudden death of her husband, General Sani Abacha in June 1998, the government of General Abdulsalami Abubakar placed her, her oldest surviving son, Mohammed, Ismaila Gwarzo who was the former National Security Adviser and others under house arrest. Stranded and furious, she had angrily denied knowing about any foreign accounts but the story later changed.

17-In one of the deals under the Obasanjo government to recover looted funds (about $1.4 billion) frozen in Luxembourg, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, the Abacha family was to keep a sum of $100 million. President Obasanjo would later say that that was one of the hardest decisions of his presidency but he later justified it saying that it was the fastest means for the country to recover looted funds. Well, I really didn’t want to dwell much on the looted funds. Why? The ones that they have recovered, where are they? As the Yorubas would say, ole gbe, ole gba.

18-Anyway, while she was being questioned about the money stashed in foreign accounts by her husband, she said the money was not stolen or looted but that her husband was simply saving the money for Nigeria in some foreign accounts. Brilliant.

19-The Maryam Abacha Women & Children Hospital in Sokoto State is named after her. The institution contains a center for treating vesico-womanly fistula (VVF) patients.

20. When she was asked about the political ambition of her son, Mohammed, who wanted to become the governor of Kano State, she stated that as Muslims, they believe in fate and destiny and were not afraid of any outcome.

21-During the negotiations to recover the looted funds, she declared that she would not surrender to government intimidation and after three months of negotiations, she offered between 5-10% of her family fortune, in addition to the $800 million that has been seized. Substantial sums were also stashed in the family’s private bedrooms or in local banks.

22-In December 2001, she pleaded with the government to release her son, Mohammed. On visiting him at the National Hospital, Abuja, she said in an emotional voice: “As you can see, you know the agony of a mother: helpless, lonely and still would not be allowed to provide adequate attention to a child she loves so much.”

23-On her orders, some ladies suspected to be girlfriends of the late dictator were detained and tortured by Abacha’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Major Hamza Al-Mustapha who has been sentenced to death after a lengthy trial.

24-Back then in 2000, she asked bitterly one day in her sitting room in her palatial residence in Kano watching CNN: “Is this humane? Is it fair for a government to fight one family over a few pennies? Obasanjo was a military man. He should have some sympathy.”

25-She also says of her late husband: “It should not be surprising that my husband was found to have a lot of money. He held a lot of government posts. If a person is industrious, and there is some luck, that money will grow.”

26-Once known as Miss Maryam Jiddah, she married General Abacha in 1965/ Her nickname while in office was ‘The Crusading First Lady’ for her role in the first summit of Africa’s First Ladies in 1997.

27-And yeah, there is this popular saying that even if they collected all the money from her, she can never be as poor as Dangote. I never saw a single strand of evidence to support that. You’ve got one?

28-As at April 1998, a group called MAP (Maryam Abacha for President) was set to emerge to support her for presidency in case her husband did not go on with his succession plans.

She is an in-law to Mohamadou Bayero Fadil, a highly influential politician and one of the richest men in Cameroon. Bayero Fadil is married to her charming daughter, Gumsu. If he becomes the President one day, that means Gumsu Sani Abacha will become the First Lady of Cameroon. Simple.
