Hong kong Film Festival Begins

Some of Asia's top filmmakers screened their new movies to kick off the 35th Hong Kong International Film Festival on Sunday, although the mood was subdued because of Japan's earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters. Japan's crisis cast doubt on whether its actors and directors will attend the Hong Kong festival. The 35th Hong Kong International Film Festival chairman Wilfred Wong expressed solidarity with Japan's people and its film industry.
Popular Japanese director Shunji Iwai, a native of hard-hit Sendai city, has cancelled his appearance at the Asian premiere of his first English-language movie, "Vampire." It remains unclear whether prominent Japanese nominees like Koji Yakusho, Rinko Kikuchi and Takako Matsu will attend the awards ceremony, the Asian Film Awards, on Monday. However, a delegation from the Tokyo International Film Festival attended Sunday's opening ceremony.

"Ever since the Hong Kong International Film Festival started 35 years ago, Japanese film has occupied an important place at the event. Our Japanese friends in the film industry have also supported the festival continuously," Wong said. "At this difficult time, I want to deliver our sincere condolences and best wishes to the entire Japanese people, including our many friends in the film industry."

The Hong Kong event's two opening films were "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," a romantic comedy directed by Hong Kong veteran Johnnie To and regular partner Wai Ka-fai, and "Quattro Hong Kong 2," which combines four shorts set in this southern Chinese financial hub made by filmmakers from Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. The omnibus work was commissioned by the Hong Kong festival.

"Don't Go Breaking My Heart" is part of To's recent push into the mainland Chinese market with blander fare than his signature crime thrillers, which are often too violent or gritty to pass mainland censorship. But the movie's story of a playboy Hong Kong trader and an earnest Canadian-Chinese architect pulling all stops to win the heart of a mainland Chinese financial analyst reads like political commentary on China's growing geopolitical clout.

To didn't attend Sunday's opening ceremony, but his co-director denied any political overtones in the movie.

"There is nothing like that," Wai told The Associated Press. "This is more simple. We just wanted to capture the common dilemma that women face when choosing between two very different boys."

The film derives much of its comedy through the unusual courtship between the main characters — they work in neighbouring office buildings and communicate by writing signs they display to each other. The narrative tool has evoked comparisons to Australian director Patrick Hughes' hit short, "Signs," which has received more than 6.5 million views on YouTube. Wai, however, said the Hong Kong filmmakers came up with the idea independently and only later saw "Signs."

"If you live in Hong Kong, you'll notice that many buildings are very close together. My home is like that," he said.

"Quattro Hong Kong 2" draws from contributions from two Cannes-winning directors — the Philippines' Brillante Mendoza and Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul — as well as Hong Kong's Stanley Kwan and Malaysia's Ho Yu-hang. Mendoza was named Cannes best director in 2009 for his crime thriller "Kinatay," while Apichatpong clinched the French festival's top prize last year with the drama "Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives."

Mendoza, who shot in Hong Kong's flower market and Tai O, a remote fishing village known for its houses on stilts, said his short explores the generational gap in Hong Kong.

He told the AP his movie contrasts locals who cling to the past and a younger generation that is quick to adapt. "It's about the progression of Hong Kong," he said.

Ho, on the other hand, came up with a story of two Malaysian anti-drug agents who work with their Hong Kong counterparts.

"I brought some elements of Malaysia into this Hong Kong project because it's very strange for me to come to Hong Kong and shoot a film about Hong Kong, which is kind of presumptuous," he told the AP, adding that he adopted a "guerrilla-style" approach shooting in the cramped conditions of the densely populated city.

First Guwahati International Short Film Festival

The 1st Guwahati International Short Film Festival (GISFF) which was earlier scheduled from April 4-5, 2011 at Cinemax, Guwahati has been postponed to May 2-3, 2011 due to Assam Assembly Elections.
The deadline for sending entries to the festival has been extended till March 20, 2011.

All the sections and criteria will remain the same as stated in a press release. However, entries to the Short Film Competition are restricted only to filmmakers from North-East Region of India for the first year. Short Filmmakers from other parts of India can submit their entries for the Indian Kaleidoscope section. There is no entry fee in the maiden edition of the short film festival.

In the competition section, short films will be awarded under these categories: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Cinematography. The best film will win a Golden Rhino, Certificate and Cash Award. Shamiana & Creovaent Shorts will screen the film all over India.

Delhi will Taste Films from Manipur

For the first time, Delhi will witness a Festival of Manipuri Cinema, Nongpokthong: Visages from the East, from 9-13 March, 2011.

The festival is organized by Manipur Film Development Corporation (MFDC) under the Department of Arts and Culture, Government of Manipur, in partnership with Manipur Cultural Society (MCS), Delhi; North East Studies Research Centre (NESRC), Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi); Centre for North Eas...t Studies (CNES), Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and four colleges of Delhi University (Lady Shri Ram College, Daulat Ram College, Dayal Singh College and Indraprastha College).

Nongpokthong (Eastern Gate), the five days long festival, will showcase more than 40 films, both feature and non-feature, from Manipur. From Matamgi Manipur (the First Feature Film in Manipuri) to the internationally acclaimed Imaagi Ningthem, the Festival will feature award winning films as well as old classics. It will also showcase films that belong to the ‘digital revolution’ for which Manipuri cinema has come to be the vanguard in the history of cinema in India. The festival brings films made in languages and dialects spoken by cognate communities who inhabit the green valley and undulating hills of Manipur.

The Festival is not only an occasion that showcases the Manipuri cinema to a larger audience but also an opportunity to acquaint Manipur, her people, their rich culture and pertinent issues that confront the state. It shall bring visages of the life and times of Manipur to cine enthusiasts and people in Delhi, both Indians and foreigners, and the youths in general. It seeks to foster understanding, particularly amongst those from outside the state and the North East Region, about Manipur and her people and also bring ‘home’ closer to the Diasporas from the state here in Delhi and nearby places.

Imphal International Short Film Festival 2011

The countdown has begun for the First Imphal International Short Film Festival 2011 on 9-13 October 2011 in Manipur. The festival is initiated by Legend Studio along with supporting organisations Film Forum, Manipur and Action for Social Advancement (ASA), Manipur. More than 100 short films from within and outside India. Theme of the festival is "Explore, Enjoy & Share". The organiser hoped that such festival will explore the hidden talents of the region and participating filmmakers will enjoy the regional theme and issues which would be share for a better future. Rules and Regulations:

Every film up to 30 minutes long can register in the Imphal International Short Film Festival.
No work or artist will be either discriminated or favored by their country of origin, language, age, race, education, ideology, or by their economic resources. Every content, every form, every technique will be admitted with no censorship of any kind.
The films will be received in its original language; English subtitles are required if its language is other than English.
For equality of opportunities, whichever the original format (film, analogical video, digital video, animation), all the films will be evaluated in the same standard digital format.
Films may be uploaded by Internet or a DVD can be sent by regular mail to the technical provider address.
Every film will be displayed for the general public and the Jury of the Festival.
Late deadline for registration is August 31st, 2011.

Meet the youngest Assistant Director- Thokchom Jolly

The Assistant Director of a Manipur Short film "Mobile Job" is Thokchom Jolly Devi. She is the youngest AD in the region, aged 15 years and have also acted in "School Karusi" - A Manipuri Film on school students. We have got the opportunity to sit with Jolly to discuss on her future plans. Here is a report.

LEGEND STUDIO: Tell me something about your experience as an Assistant Director.
JOLLY: I loved to join the Manipuri Film industry since my early days. I also acted in the film "School Karusi" produced by Mohen Naorem. He encouraged me to go for the direction as there are not many female directors in Manipuri film industry. First he helped me the basic rule of casting director, the assistant director, camera angles, and even guide me in managing the artists on the set.

LEGEND STUDIO: You are 15 years old... right? How do you feel like managing the artists which are seniors to you?
JOLLY: I am scared at first, now I am confident.

LEGEND STUDIO: What is your contribution to the film "Mobile Job"?
JOLLY: Since it was my first film as a crew, I was assigned the task of storyboard preparation, continuity and artists management.

LEGEND STUDIO: What is your future plan?
JOLLY: There is a documentary project and a commercial film from Legend Studio and I would be working as Assistant Director in both the projects.

LEGEND STUDIO:Any message to the artists and new talents?
JOLLY: Focused on your career in a professional way. I would also like the new talents to learn watching and observing acting from Hollywood and Korean cinema.

'Marmaduke' premieres directly on Home Video in India

Excel Home Entertainment and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment release the amusing live-action movie 'Marmaduke' directly on Blu-Ray and DVD. The movie did not have a theatrical release in India hence directly premieres on home video. Oscar nominated, Marmaduke is based on Brad Anderson's popular comic strip that has run for more than five decades.

The film centers on a rural Kansas family and their pets - a Great Dane named Marmaduke (voiced by Owen Wilson) and a Balinese named Carlos (voiced by George Lopez). 3 out of 6 best film nominations from UTV nominated for Best Films category

Not one or two, but three out of the six films nominated for the Best Film Category' at the prestigious Star Screen Awards are from the UTV stable. The movies nominated in this category are Raajneeti, Udaan and Peepli [Live].

Raajneeti, the multi- starrer blockbuster of 2010, directed by Prakash Jha and co-produced by Prakash Jha, Walkwater media and UTV Motion Pictures is the 5th biggest Hindi film of all times.
Udaan, directed by Vikram Aditya Motwane, and produced by Sanjay Singh, Anurag Kashyap and UTV Motion Pictures, was a fantastic example of a small film which received overwhelming recognition worldwide. The film competed in the Un Certain Regard category at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival and was first Indian film to be part of this section in seven years.
Peepli [Live] directed by Anusha Rizvi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions and UTV Motion Pictures was another critically acclaimed film and classic example of how a small film was made big. Casting Calls for Korean Horror Movie

Korean horror, sometimes referred to as K-Horror, is the term given to horror films made as part of the cinema of Korea. Korean horror features many of the same motifs, themes, and imagery as Japanese horror. Korean horror has been around since the early years of Korean cinema; however, it wasn't until the late 1990's did the genre begin to experience a renewal. Many of the Korean horror films tend to focus on the suffering and the anguish of characters rather than focus on the gory "blood and guts" aspect of horror.

Let us pick two most influential Korean Horror Films - Whispering Corridors and Tales of Two Sisters.

Whispering Corridors (1998) is seen as the film to have sparked the explosion of the Korean horror genre we see today. This movie centers on the all too familiar theme of school girls and the mysterious "other side". While focusing on the horror aspect this movie also served as a way to criticize the Korean school system.

Tale of Two Sisters (2003) reigns as the highest grossing Korean horror film and was the first to be screened in America. A remake was made in America and titled The Uninvited. Based off a folktale titled Janghwa Hongreyon-jon this psychological thriller tells the story of two sisters dealing with a controlling stepmother and a passive father.

This is the story of three friends and their just-launched online lingerie store. Their first product is a hit, and is managing to drive away people's fear of the dark

If Anup Pareek asks you if you prefer a thong over a V-string, you needn't be offended. It's all for research. During one typical chat with buddies about clothes, girls and cash, Pareek stumbled on the idea of a business.
"We always thought women's underwear was really boring. Guys have so many cooler options like funky boxers. Women don't have innovative lingerie to pick, at least not in India."

Together with Rohan Grover and Rohan A Divanji, Pareek froze the idea of the online store, and named it Marilyn, after diva Marilyn Monroe. Barely a month old, it has already received an enthusiastic response for its first collection of glow-in-the-dark lingerie. Future plans include theme-based lingerie that carry funky graphics. Look out for a Christmas range, and something to match World Cup fever.

You can shop for a set or single pieces, and select from a range of sizes. Priced between Rs 1,700 and Rs 3,400, the range offers bikinis, lace G-strings, baby doll negligees and silk French knickers.

"Distant relatives" continue to go "haa-hoo", but their parents have been supportive. Pareek, who is now quite the expert after several discussions with female friends, says he and his pals chose not to reveal their business plan to their parents. "Then one day, the first consignment of 2,000 sets showed up at Divanji's house, and his mom had to sign for it. That's when we had some explaining to do." he laughs.

10th Florence Indian Film Festival Concludes

The 10th edition of the River to River. Florence Indian Film Festival, under the patronage of Embassy of India, has had its last day on the 9^th of December, with great attendance and feedback of the audience and the press, confirming further the importance of the 50 Giorni di Cinema Internazionale a Firenze and the historical beauty of Odeon Cinema Hall.

There has been a large appreciation among the audience and the Industry people for the films in competition, the Opening and Closing films directed by Aparna Sen, the special sections and the retrospective devoted to Satyajit Ray (in collaboration with the Directorate of Film Festivals of New Delhi, the National Film Archive of India in Pune and the National Film Development Corporation of Mumbai), and the Spazio Uno screenings.

During the Festival the morning talks at Odeon Cinema Hall and the collaborations with Marino Marini Museum for the photo exhibition Satyajit Ray: Filmmaker in Creative Passion by Nemai Ghosh, and with Palazzo Tornabuoni have had great relevance.

Filipina- American Actress Nominated for "Best Actress" at Film Festivals

Filipina- American Actress, Shelene Atanacio, was awarded "Break Out Action Star" at the Pasadena Action on Film International Film Festival for her role in the film Codename: Dragonfly, where she plays secret agent Lola Basheer. Shelene received her award at the Black Tie Gala and Awards Reception on July 29, 2010. Awardees in other categories include a Life Time Achievement Award going to legendary actress Talia Shire from The GodFather. The Pasadena Action on Film International Film Festival brings together over 500 filmmakers from around the world.

In other news, Shelene was also nominated for "Best Actress" at the American International Film Festival. She is also known for her role in the independent film, Harrison Montgomery, starring Oscar Winner Martin Landau and actor, Octavio Gomez of Che. New Action-thriller "Ticket Out"

Spotlight Pictures has announced that the action-thriller “Ticket Out” will make its world premiere at the American Film Market (AFM) in Santa Monica, California this November.

The film, inspired by actual facts, stars Ray Liotta as Jim, a man who helps abused women smuggle their children out of the country. Jim gets more than he bargains for when he assists a young mother Jocelyn (played by Alexandra Breckinridge) escape out of the country with her two young children. Billy Burke, fresh off the success of the “Twilight” series, plays the violent ex-husband who pursues Jocelyn and Jim across the country. Joel Moore, who recently starred in Jim Cameron’s epic “Avatar”, co-stars. The film is produced by Chris Noonan, the acclaimed director of “Babe” and “Miss Potter”.

“The film is a classic chase film,” says Spotlight Pictures CEO Matthew McCombs. “The director, Doug Lodato, did an amazing job of having audiences really care for these characters and then, when the time is right, he just lets it fly. The audience feels constant tension and there are quite a few unexpected and clever twists. This film keeps going and going until an amazing climactic ending”.

“Ticket Out” will premiere in November in Santa Monica, California at the American Film Market (AFM). The AFM is an international trade show for motion picture executives and distributors.

Spotlight Pictures will also premiere at AFM the family road-trip film “Chasing 3000”, which stars Rory Culkin, Trevor Morgan, Lauren Holly and Ray Liotta.

Skills & Education:

Becoming a make up artist is no easy task. Especially depending on where you want to work. Many make up artists get their start by first working as assistants on a movie set or television show. Their first gigs are usually on student films, low budget features or television which are the perfect training ground. Many actors and actresses develop relationships with make up artists and often request them by name at the beginning of a project.

Cosmetology school is an important step toward becoming a make up artist. It's not mandatory, but it gives you a solid educational foundation on which to continue building your career. In Los Angeles and New York, there are numerous schools that offer make up for film and television classes which will not only help you learn the craft, but will introduce you to others in the industry. You might also consider taking a class in color theory which will help you to understand the basics of color.

Experiment and familiarize yourself with the wide variety of products available. Watch a number of movies and see what a make up artist did to achieve certain looks and experiment on your own. To become a make up effects artist, you'll want to have a basic understanding of chemistry as many of the pieces you develop will be quite technical.

Career Advice:

A good make up artist is creative with their craft, but also listens to the directors, actors and producers so that they can achieve the desired results. You must be a people person and it helps to have a great personality. The Lemturs are glued to their plasma screen. After all, it’s the moment they’ve all been waiting for: Go Min Nam, so far disguised as a boy, is going to reveal her true identity. She is a member of a popular Asian boy band, so clearly the disclosure is going to cause some serious ripples. She walks up to the stage to face the ire of the media and her bandmates ahead of a press conference.

The family of five can’t wait for the story of You’re Beautiful to unfurl. There is high excitement at home as subtitles of the serial are translated into English, or a scene explained to somebody who’s missed a cue. “I often have to repeat the dialogues to my mother in our native language,” says beautician Sumongilo Lemtur.

That’s because the serial they are watching is in Korean. And though the Lemturs live in Dimapur in Nagaland, it’s the serial from another Asian country that provides them with their daily diet of entertainment.

Popular culture has often crossed boundaries. There was a time when all of Russia danced to Raj Kapoor’s Mera joota hai Japani. In parts of Asia and Africa, the sight of an Indian still prompts locals to recall Amitabh Bachchan. In the Eighties in India, before satellite television changed the face of the serial, Indian homes were flooded with videos of Pakistani soaps.

Today, it’s Korean culture — and it’s spreading like wildfire through the northeast. From Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh to Manipur and Mizoram, everything that is Korean is “hot and fast selling”. The Korean wave — or hallyu, as it is popularly known — hit the states a few years ago and is now at its peak. Hallyu refers to popular Korean culture ranging from music, soaps and cinema to online games and food.

Korean TV got a boost as militant groups in parts of the northeast called for banning Indian television channels and Hindi cinema. Indian TV channels, many complained, anyway hardly covered the northeast.

“Also, the people here could never identify with the soaps shown on Hindi entertainment channels,” says Theja Meru, cultural promoter and president of the Arirang TV club in Dimapur. Even now, while characters from different parts of the country often find meaty roles in the soaps that flood Indian channels, hardly anybody from the northeast is featured. “Do we ever matter to people in the rest of the country,” asks Mohen Naorem, a Manipuri filmmaker.

The filmmaker believes that Korean television filled that gap because of the physical similarities between Koreans and sections of people in the northeast. “People found solace in Korean entertainment because of the likeness in physical appearances,” he holds. “Korean entertainment also succeeded in making a big impact because of easy availability and accessibility,” adds Naorem, who says he is producing a “Korean-style film” with Manipuri actors.
