The history of the Adrenaline Films logo and brand

You may have noticed a new Adrenaline Films Logo showing up in a few places. In fact, we have rebranded our logo and are very excited to roll it out. This is our third “official” incarnation of the logo. The name and logo both have origins in Zermatt, Switzerland – famous for its location at the base of the Matterhorn.

My production career started in Zermatt where I lived in my early 20’s. I quickly became addicted to climbing, skiing and ski mountaineering. I was living a “mountain” lifestyle.

My first year there I met Chris Banford, another young American who was doing the same thing. We became and have remained great friends since then. In addition to a lot of things, Chris is an amazing graphic artist.

After six years in Zermatt, I moved to Florida to pursue a TV production opportunity. Some years after that, I started Adrenaline Film Productions, Inc. My connections and friendships in Zermatt remained strong and I visited often. When it was time to design a logo – there was no doubt in my mind, that Chris Banford was the right person. During a visit there, we tried many ideas and began to settle on a logo that would emulate a Mountain style. Our first logo that we created in 1991 used red foil on business cards and a custom font that Chris designed from scratch. It used the full name of the company including the word Productions.

That logo served us well through the 1990s. Those were both exciting and challenging years. My ski-bum / mountain mentality of survival and risk taking parlayed into a company culture of survival and risk taking where failure is not an option. You have one chance to get a shot and you better get it right. Moving from place to place to setup shop, we finally landed in the back of adapted warehouse at Douglas Ave, Altamonte Springs.

By 1999 we had outgrown our 900 square foot Douglas Ave office and were trying to qualify to buy a building. About the same time, Chris and I set out to evolve the logo again. It was time. We took the sharp, comic book style A and developed it into a standalone logo. We also now had a web domain called adrenalinefilms.com and had been referring to our business as Adrenaline Films. So we combined all the changes and developed this second incarnation of our corporate identity.

The new logo itself was white with blue particles defining the logo edges with an all cap sans serif wide kerned logo font. We all loved the new look and this became the foundation for our corporate identity.

About the same time, in the spring of 1999 we found a 24,000 square foot building on South Orange Ave. Miraculously, the bank qualified us to the buy the building and we found ourselves with more space than we had ever imagined.

On came new excitement and new challenges! The new building and logo were key factors to growth and prosperity that would come in the next decade.

The logo served us very well for a long time, but it was always meant to evolve with the business. Over time we discovered some of its challenges. Parts of the logo were intricate and didn’t translate well into all mediums. The blue color was hard to produce and keep consistent. Often it printed toward purple. As the business continued to grow, the logo was left to interpretations by well-intentioned web masters and motion graphic artists. Over time we found ourselves breaking all the rules of design guide best practices – using a mishmash of different logos!

In 2014, the need to resolve the logo inconsistencies and get our corporate identity sorted out became a key objective of our GM, Tim Bartlett. With heavy encouragement from Tim, I began reaching out to Chris Banford. He was planning to come back to the US for Thanksgiving and during that trip, I persuaded him to come to Orlando for a few days to work with me to revise the logo. After a long weekend of brainstorming and talking through ideas, Chris began working his magic. Since then we as a company have gone through some tweaks and finalized most of the layouts. There is still much to do in ferreting out all the places the old logo exist and in creating a proper style guide. However, the essential building blocks are complete and we are happy to officially unveil the new logo!

In looking back at it all, it occurs to me how lucky I’ve been to have the great team of people who have made Adrenaline an awesome place. And how lucky I am to have a talented friend like Chris to continue to evolve our logo and corporate identity twenty five years later!
