It all started with the thought that I am going to leave my FLATTED factory office to work from home in my HDB FLAT.

Then I wondered why they use the word FLAT for the 2 types of buildings when they do not look one bit FLAT! As in squashed flat FLAT!

I googled Google and found a Yahoo Answer answer.

The British use the word FLAT while the Americans use APARTMENT.

They call it FLAT because in each home, there is no upstairs and downstairs. Every room in the house is on one FLAT level.

Is that true?

Then why don’t we call condos flats?

Nostalgic! It’s been 5 years since I last shot and edited a wedding video.

These days I turn down requests, but this offer I could not refuse… A wedding in Phuket Thailand!

Furthermore, it’s a request from a corporate client who trusted my work and willing to pay the right price.

Anyway, it’s the wedding of the client’s own daughter and they being professional PR and event organizers, the weekend party was a memorable experience.

I was glad my skills were still intact… catching the right moment at the right time intuitively and editing a highlight masterpiece with express speed.

So, will I come back to the wedding scene?

Only if the location and offer is attractive.

Day two of moving out sale.

I realised that it was not only physically exhausting, but also emotionally draining.

On the one hand, i was sad to see the items that had been with me for years go into somebody else’s hands.

On the other, I was happy that the items were given a second lease of life instead of meeting the dump.

So in day 2 of the office moving out sale, I could see more walking space as things move out rapidly.

To get over my emotional drain… Breathe…

Shady Walk to Office in Bukit Merah Central

So, I managed to squeeze the whole lot of green screen studio into a mid-sized luggage.

Inside, you will find:
1. 2 sheets of 5 x1 meter green fabric.
2. Sticky tapes to hold the sheets to the wall.
3. 2 sets of studio lights with stands.
4. 1 spare lamp.
5. 1 extension power cord for the lights.
6. 1 wall power socket adapter.
7. 1 LED light as back light.
8. 12 spare AA batteries for the LED light and Sennheiser wireless microphone.
9. 1 pair of Sennheiser wireless microphones.
10. 1 Panasonic AG-HMC151 professional camcorder.
11. 1 Spare battery for the camcorder.
12. 2 pairs of earphones.
13. 1 brolly.
14. 1 disposable raincoat.
15. 1 Joby gorilla pod.
16. 1 Velbon tripod.

You can pack these in hard cases or stack them on a trolley and let hotel security chase you to the loading bay.

OR…

Pack them in a luggage and have every hotel staff rushing toward you to offer their help.

So I arrived at Hyatt Hotel to meet the client.

And you know what?

The room given to us was so well decorated that there was no need to use the green screen. There was everything we needed to shoot a great video.

So, after all that squeezing stuff into the luggage, the mobile green screen studio was never activated.

But it’s ok… I traveled in style.

4th Day of Video Shoot Without a Car

Taking the public bus was not a hassle. Google Map app is a friend!

The equipment I carried was the burden.

So every night for the past 3 nights, I repacked my gear based on the requirement of the day.

I made sure I travelled light, yet have everything including backups.

Today, it’s only a haversack and a black soft bag to carry the camera with one hand.

Unlike driving, there was a lot of waiting …a good excuse to blog.

Had to transfer by a shuttle bus to the hotel in Sentosa from Vivocity.

Though it’s a 5-star hotel that provided free mini-bus in and out of the island, I had to sit on the steps of the shopping mall to wait (see image).

Complains aside, I enjoyed moving around like most locals do. It felt like traveling as …a tourist …a foreigner …an explorer. Anyway, I have been walking overseas pulling a luggage full of videography hardware.

One thing I wished to change (other than getting that new car) was to have a smaller video camera and and a lighter video editing laptop.

Attending Phoebe's Rhythmic Gym Competition Rehearsal

I might not be able to attend Phoebe’s R Gym inter-school competition next Wednesday due to work, but I am happy to have attended the rehearsal.

Held at Guillamard Village GymKraft, next to G.SPA, I thought the venue was expensive. I had to pay $60 supposedly to use the place for 3 hours.

There was a rock climbing facility next to it, with many people queuing for their turn.

Took bus number 197. I helped to carry the big hoop, which knocked into other passengers several times.

It was raining heavily upon arrival. Without an umbrella, we waited for the rain to ebb a little before dashing into the hall.

Phoebe competed every year for the past 5 years. This year, she will be competing in hoops and clubs.

Selling a 10 Year Old Car in Singapore

Should I sell or scrap or renew my 10 year old 1.6L Kia Spectra.

Renewal was definitely out. COE was sky high! Close to S$100k for paper!

What’s left was to sell or scrap, but…

- Should I scrap the car myself or pay someone to do it?
- Should I sell it to a car dealer or an exporter dealer?
- Should I just buy another car and trade in this one?

The answer was immediately settled when SgCarmart called me on 4 Mar 2013.

In this post, I journal my experience and take-aways.

This is the last picture of my car on 11 Mar 2013.

First, some facts and figures.

THE CAR SELLING EXPERIENCE

- Early Feb 2013: Hong Leong Finance called. Asked if I wanted to collect the car log card in their possession so as to sell or scrap my car. If so, I could make the final car loan installment earlier.

- 28 Feb 2013 11am: Called Hong Leong Finance to check whether they received my final car loan installment and if so how could I collect my log card. They said yes and would arrange to mail me the log card the following week.

- 1 Mar 2013 9am: Renewed monthly S$90 HDB season parking, knowing the car would be parked less than one month.

- 4 Mar 2013 4 pm: SgCarmart called. Asked if I am interested to sell my Kia Spectra. I said yes. They asked about the condition of the car, the bodywork, any accidents and mileage. I ran downstairs to the car to check the mileage. 105,683km. Asked how much I wanted to sell. I said above PARF value of S$8312. They would next put up the offer to car dealers.

- 5 Mar 2013 10am: SgCarmart called. Said a car dealer offered S$8600 and asked if the price was ok. I said yes and asked what’s next. They would arrange the car dealer to contact me directly.

- 5 Mar 2013 5pm: The car dealer called. Asked if S$8600 was acceptable. I said yes and asked what’s next. Drive the car to them with my IC and original log card with COE number. Asked me when. I said Monday 1pm. Car dealer also also said my finance bank had not released the “Form B”.

- 6 Mar 2013: Called Hong Leong Finance to check if they have mailed the log card. Nope, they did not. They offered to send it out again. I said no way and proposed to collect it myself.

- 1 hour later: I collected the log card, or rather the Vehicle Registration Card, from Hong Leong Building along Raffles Quay. A helpful staff, Siong, also said they released the “form B”.

- 11 Mar 2013 11.30am: Drove to the car dealer in Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2. Brought original log card and my IC. Told me to come back after they process the paperwork with LTA. Left my car, car keys and IC with them.

- 11 Mar 2013 3.45pm: Car dealer called. Asked me to collect the cheque and IC. Received the S$8600 cheque and IC. Also received an LTA ownership transfer printout and a dealer invoice for the transaction.

- 11 Mar 2013 evening: Applied online for HDB season parking refund. Approval was immediate. The refunded S$58 would be transferred to my bank.

- 11 Mar 2013 same evening. Logged on to LTA website. All information about my car was gone except for an ownership transfer notice.

- 14 Mar 2013. Checked my bank balance. The S$8600 was safely deposited.

My Kia Spectra was SOLD!

THE CAR SELLING TAKE-AWAYS

Here are some interesting knowledge I gathered along the way.

How much will I get back if I scrap car?

The re-registration value, aka scrap value, is the PARF (Preferential Additional Registration Fee) rebate and the COE rebate.

PARF for car aged 9 to 10 years = 50% of ARF.

The ARF (Additional Registration Fee) of the vehicle will be stated in the log card.

ARF for car at year 2003 = 130% of OMV.

Hence…

For Kia Spectra registered 27 Mar 2003,
COE = $27,416
PARF = $8,312

COE per month = $27,416 / 120 = $228
COE per day = $228 / 31 = $7.40

So if scrap now, left 20 days:
I will get back
$8,312 + ($7.40×20) = $8,460.

How much to pay sgcarmart foe making the arrangement?

Nothing.

Must submit the following documents with vehicle:
1. Transaction PIN obtained from LTA for application of vehicle de-registration.
2. Completed vehicle de-registration application form.
3. A copy of the vehicle registration log card/book.

What about exporting instead of scrapping?

- The Government has “The Scrap Car” policy for any car that reaches 10 years of age and a very encouraging REBATE policy where by if the car owner decides to export out car just after 3 or 5 years of use, he gets monetary rewards for buying the NEW car.
- Car dealers buy the used vehicle, complete government formalities like “De-registration” etc and work out rebate documents for the car owner to go and get the NEW car. Then they move these used cars for EPZ which is called Export processing zone.

How much would I get if I sold the body metal parts?

The closest reference was S$500 for a Hyundai Matrix.

What if I chose to renew the COE?

If a 5-year COE is chosen for the vehicle at the next renewal, no further renewal will be allowed upon expiry of the new COE.

THOUGHTS

So, I was happy to sell the car at a profit without having to go through the hassle of de-registration.

Would my Kia Spectra be crushed for parts or would she be exported to start a new life. That depended on the decision of the dealer. The thought of the second option made me feel better.

Friday Food Frenzy is Gong Gong

Today’s food adventure with Stella was at the freshly renovated Changi Village. Very airy.

Stella’s favorite stores were either not there anymore or moved to another spot.

So we settled for what we guessed were the favorite stores.

There was the Hokkien Prawn Noodle.

Then there was the mutton cheese Roti John.

I saw other people pushing sticks into shells and pulling out mouth-watering pieces. The Gong Gong.

Ordered one plate. S$10 for 20 shells. Steamed in tinfoil.

Very hard to extract the meat at first. Soon I mastered the skill.

Chewy and springy, it felt good to bite.

The Gong Gong made my day.

After dinner, we walked to a nearby pub restaurant. Ordered one Erdinger beer and enjoyed the Friday atmosphere till midnight.

THE QUEST:

- I want to use my hdb home address for business.
- I want to use my hdb home as a home office.

THE 2 SCHEMES:

- Home Office Scheme.
- Home Based Small Scale Business Scheme.

HOME OFFICE SCHEME:

- The address can be used for business registration.
- Must install one 2-kg ABC Dry Chemical Powder fire extinguisher to the office area.
- Must install one single-station smoke detector in the office area.
- Allows a maximum of 2 non-residents staff.
- Owner-occupied concessionary property tax rate continues to apply.
- All business income earned are subject to income tax.

Password Protect a Directory in a Hostgator Website

I found another way to deliver huge video files over the Internet privately and in high definition… using my Hostgator website.

I needed to send the raw video footage of last weekend’s shoot to the client quickly.

I wanted to send the video in high definition without compressing to smaller file size. I wanted to maintain privacy without going though a third party service. I wanted speed.

So I decided to use my Hostgator website to deliver the goods.

Why Hostgator website? I have other web hosting providers, but they restrict uploading speeds. Uploading videos to Hostgator website is as fast as uploading to YouTube. Uploading files to other web hosts, like Bluehost, Godaddy and Yahoo Business Web, are as slow as Vimeo.

How?

- Login into your Hosgator cPanel and click on the Subdomain icon, found under Domains.

- Create a Subdomain. If you are running WordPress on the main domain, you must create a Subdomain, otherwise password protection will not work.

- Create a directory in the Subdomain. Use the same subdomain for other clients and projects by creating more directories.

- Go back into your cPanel and click on the Password Protect Directories icon, found under Security.

- Choose Document Root and select your Subdomain. Click Go button below.

- Click on the directory you created.

- Check the box for “Password protect this directory:” Click on Save button below.

- Click “Go Back”.

- Fill in a Username and Password at the bottom of the page, and click “Add/modify authorized user”.

- The directory is now protected by password.

- Upload video files to the directory with Filezilla, an FTP program. Uploading using an FTP program is faster and allows bigger file size instead of using the web host uploader.

Videography Course vs How to Make Video on Google Keyword Tool

A quick research on Google Keyword Tool revealed the truth.

I must rephrase my Basic Videography Course sales page in order to get more hits.

Here is what I discovered…
(“Keyword” Global searhes – Singapore searches)

. “videography course” 390 – 28

Only 28 searches in Singapore a month!
(some are my own to check that my page is searchable)
No wonder I am not getting enough enquiries.

Then I saw this right below “videography course”

. “photography course” 49,500 – 1,300

What a huge difference!
I will consider teaching photography instead.

For now, let me stick with my expertise.
Are people searching for “video editing course”?

. “video editing course” 1,900 – 58
. “video editing courses” 1,600 – 22
. “video editing services” 1,600 – 28

The numbers look good for global search but not for local search.
So maybe I should start a course for the world and forget teaching in Singapore.

What about “video production course”?

. “video production course” 480 – 16

Just as pathetic as “videography course”

Now try “how to make videos”.

. “how to make videos” 22,200 – 170
. “how to make video” 49,500 – 720

The data looks better now, especially for global.

Let’s go deeper.

A little more promising.

Go even deeper.

I left out Singapore searches because the figure is just too minute.
I am beginning to see where my market is. Not here but out there.

It looks like people are searching more for a product name rather than what they want to solve or learn.

Let’s see the data for product names.

BINGO! I think I found my market if what I am thinking is right.

I read somewhere that 300 searches means the market is viable for business.

I also searched for “how to record video”, “how to take video” and “how to shoot video”. They were not at all interesting, so I did not present the figures here.

Conclusion

Based only on these numbers, here’s what I can do better:
1. Create online courses for the world instead of teaching locally.
2. Focus the course on teaching using specific products like Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas and Final Cut.
3. Start by giving free lessons online.
