I first came to know about Nyan Cat exactly one month ago when ReelSEO reported the top ten most watched YouTube videos of the year.

It is a 4-minute animated low resolution graphic cat running non-stop with a catchy never-ending music.

Then I found out that my 13 year-old kid actually knew out its existence and told me there was even a 10-HOUR version.

At the time of writing this post, there were over 60 million views on the 4-minute version and over 10 million views on the 10-hour version.

Today I stumbled upon the “Nyan Cat: Lost in Space” game in the iPhone app store. Curiously, I downloaded it.

The free game is a bit old fashioned… Like playing Super Mario… Just running in one direction… Grabbing points and avoiding obstacles.

It was addictive though… Because once in a while you get super powers… Flying faster or magnetizing objects towards you.

So I played and scored high points. Like in other apps, it allowed me to show off my score on Facebook.

SADLY, I played Nyan Cat only once because the app would not open again… It kept crashing.

Thai Seafood Fried Vermicelli at Diandin Leluk Thai Restaurant - Singapore

It is Thai dinner this Friday. Before I proceed with the food review, let me highly recommend Diandin Leluk Thai restaurant, Singapore (or is it Por Jai Authentic Thai Restaurant at Serangoon Gardens, I see two different names on the order form and the receipt).

Value for money. Cozy ambiance. Solid dark wood tables and seats.

Ordered Thai seafood fried vermicelli and olive rice. Again value for money.
Priced like a shopping mall food court.

First impression: The bright red chili looks tempting on the vermicelli. The olives looked dull on the fried rice.

Surprise factor: Don’t judge the book by its cover. The vermicelli tasted better than most Thai restaurants I have tried. The olive rice is far better.

Olive rice adventure: You have to eat the rice in spoonfuls with olives to get the full flavor. Even better, eat them together with cashew nuts and lemon pieces. Crush the fresh lemon in your mouth and feel an explosion of taste, like a chemical reaction.

A cold lemon grass drink is perfect to end the meal.

Oh yes, not forgetting the extra order of tapioca with coconut cream. Sweet, juicy and fibre-less.

Game of Life 50th Anniversary Edition Review

What would you do when you are in the middle of your work at home and your kids request you to join them in their game?

I would drop everything and play! After all, I am at home and it’s a Sunday!

This time my kids opened a board game called the “Game of Life 50″, which had been gathering dust since their uncle gave it to them a year ago.

So… I was assigned to be the banker, taking care of money… and I have no idea how the game works!

It looks very much like Monopoly… You move your token around the board… Make some money then lose some.

The difference between the Game of Life and Monopoly is that in Game of Life, like the name says, is not just about money, but also about getting married, having kids otherwise adopt twins, pay their school fees and more.

Everyone’s token is a colored six-seater SUV where you start off with one peg sitting in it. The peg represents you… Blue peg for male and pink for female. The SUV gets more crowded as you progress through the game with spouse and kids.

I did not get married in the game but adopted twins.

Unlike Monopoly, the board is 3D… With buildings and mountains just like a real terrain which made driving my SUV around the board more exciting.

Every building and mountain is gold in color and on every Game of Life logo is the number 50. I asked my kids for the meaning of all these.

So “50″ means 50th anniversary of the game… (this game is older than I am and I’ve never heard of it!). This is a special edition with gold treatment… (so is this a collector’s item that will be in demand in future?)

True enough, I checked Amazon and they are running out of stock for the 50th Anniversary Edition, but still sell the regular Game of Life version.

The aim of the game is to retire the richest. Things that happen in the game are highly dependent on chance though there is still an element of strategy if you know how to make the right investments.

I rate this game 7 out of 10. The missing points go to the complex rules, steep learning curve and non-strategy based play.

From the kids’ point of view, they loved to see themselves growing up and going through life, getting a career, switching careers, receiving pay raise, investing in properties, making more money, settling down, having kids and retiring rich.

Overall, the “Game of Life 50″ is a mind challenging yet captivating game for the whole family.

Birthday Surprise from my Kids

Arrived home late at night and noticed from far a bright pink paper stuck on our front door.

Thought it was another one of those many advertising flyers we get everyday.

On closer look, I saw a handwritten message for me. So it was written by my kids telling me to go to my room to pick up something.

“OK. Now this is going to be exciting. Looks like a treasure hunt.” I thought.

So straight into the bedroom I went and saw on my mattress 2 hand-made birthday greeting cards with another note on a bright pink paper.

The note says go to the kitchen and look into the fridge top shelf to find something that looks like a candle. Immediately, I did that, anticipating more surprises.

Inside the fridge is yet another bright pink note with “Happy Birthday Daddy!”. Beside the note is a creamy looking desert with a marshmallow candle stuck on top.

What a wonderful surprise and the best birthday present from my kids.

Overall experience? 70% of its original flavor is missing.

Discovery? The 70% is chilli. All along I thought I loved Ajisen Ramen until today. Today I ordered the original dish without the chilli. So actually I just loved arisen chilli!

Makes me wonder. Do I really like Japanese ramen? I must go back to the famous iluma ramen champion stores to verify by tasting their authentic dishes.

Burmese Laksa vs Singapore Laksa

This Friday’s food is the Burmese Laksa aka Myanmar Laksa.

I know Singapore Laksa and Penang Laksa but I have never heard of the Burmese Laksa. So this is my first time tasting it at the Kopitiam Vivocity Singapore.

First look, the gravy is less reddish compared with my favorite Singapore Laksa. It is more of a light yellow.

First taste, very thick coconut milk flavor. Texture is just as thick. Immediately reminds me of the green Thai curry.

How spicy is the gravy? I would rate 1 out of 10, 10 being extreme spicy and 1 being just starting to get spicy.

Raw onions, also my favorite, made the dish more exciting. Raw onions are not found in the Singapore Laksa.

The noodle is a let down. I was expecting the thick white vermicelli noodle. Instead it was the regular yellow noodle.

Overall I enjoyed the Burmese Laksa as a dish on it’s own. It cannot be compared with the Singapore Laksa because they are entirely different.

The next time I come back here I am going to try the Kelantan Laksa and the Sarawak Laksa. Never heard of them too.

I am one of them!

We use a cloud CRM software for our business quotation, invoicing and customer management. We have not found a matching accounting software to complement it. Hence we are still tediously filling out spreadsheets to calculate profit and loss figures.

There are only a few accounting software in the market but which one is the best for Singapore businesses?

This morning at the Rendezvous meeting, a fellow business owner showcased his recommended software.

iPhone iMovie Now Supports Videos Imported from External Cameras

This is great news!

Until now the iPhone iMovie can edit only videos shot with it’s own camera or video from another iPhone camera. You cannot edit videos from other video source.

How many video formats can it support?

Maybe I am guessing that it works this way.

The only way to find out is to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.0 then upgrade iMovie. This new version works only on iOS 5.0.

Stay tuned for my review.

Who Do You Call for Car Breakdown Service

I always call AA, Automobile Association of Singapore, when my car break down in the middle of nowhere… And AA always arrive earlier than the promised one hour.

Had to reschedule an important meeting today because my grand old Kia Spectra just wouldn’t start in the carpark at home.

It’s not as old as you think… The mileage clocked is still very low compared with other cars of the same age of 7 to 8 years.

A cabin lamp was left on overnight, hence drained out the battery.

The battery was recharged and I was given a choice whether to change the battery to a new one. (this is like an annual affair)

Since the battery is already 15 months old, I decided to change it to new one which costs… S$175!

At least there is peace of mind for another year.

So who do you call when your car breaks down?

Move from Bluehost to Hostgator Almost

The decision to move from Bluehost to Hostgator was made early this year when Bluehost became sluggish with excessive downtimes.

My business website built entirely from WordPress also includes scripts in the back end for CRM and emails. To create a good impression on customers, we cannot afford anymore impromptu website disappearing act caused by the web hosting company.

Today is the day to take action. Move from Bluehost to Hostgator.

Here are several backup steps I took before proceeding.

1. Save Essential Sales Pages

In case the transfer process fail, we can continue business from another domain quickly with the downloaded and saved pages. (wanted to duplicate the sales pages on Facebook page, but Facebook removed it’s multiple FBML tabs feature).

Sales Pages include home page, services pages, course pages, about us and contact us.

We have only 10 essential sales pages to save. The rest are hidden or script generated.

Let’s login to WordPress and explore any hidden pages worth saving just in case.

Found 5 pages of Videography mini e-course for subscribers. Very well written content that must be saved.

The other 100 non-essential hidden pages can be recreated any time when needed but really most of them are not required any more, like ad-hoc promos, and can be deleted.

2. Save Popular Blog Posts

I have 90 blog posts in VideoLane.com and some of them are so informative that majority of traffic are coming from them.

These popular blog posts are so well received that they are directly linked from other people’s websites. It’s an honor and it’ll be a pity if not being transferred successfully.

So instead of saving all 90 posts, I will save the top 10 traffic bringers based on Google Analytics stats.

Maybe I should create a fresh WordPress site to suck in all the existing blog posts as backup.

3. Then I Changed My Mind

So if I want to suck all my blog posts to another WordPress site, I have to setup a domain in another webhosting company.

What about vTiger? The CRM script is the only reason I like Bluehost, especially vTiger installation with SimpleScript. SimpleScript automatically installs most open source scripts without having to do any technical tweaking and SimpleScripts resides only in Bluehost and some other lesser known webhosting companies. If I don’t trust Bluehost, how in the world am I going to trust the lesser known ones.

Ok, let’s move the main site to Hostgator and open a new account on Bluehost just to run vTiger CRM. While registering a new domain on Bluehost, I discovered the Pro Package. For a long time, Bluehost never offered any upgrades. What if I upgrade from the shared hosting account to Pro Package account, so that I don’t have to worry about transferring data to Hostgator? Is the Pro Package really any better?

A search on Google revealed positive feedback and one of them being…

This review looks genuine enough (these days we have to decipher what’s real and what’s not when it come to reviews).

So let me give it a shot. Upgrade to Bluehost Pro Package account. If it does not work, I will move to Hostgator.

The next step required before pressing the upgrade button is to download the full website in zip format complete with files, database, email forwarders and configuration setting. 11 GB in total.

Read tomorrow’s post about the upgrading process. I am leaving the computer turned on overnight for the massive download.

1. Fill every business unit with the maximum of 3 staff.
2. Spend towerbucks to fill every residential apartment with 5 residents.
3. Evict any resident whose dream job is fully taken up.
4. Build 3 residential apartments followed by 5 business units and repeat.
5. Don’t bother pressing the blue button to find a resident. Wastes time when you have 80 floors.

I play to relax and enjoy the sound of money falling.

Ramen Review on Our Anniversary

A simple treat to celebrate our 15th anniversary.

Heard about the ramen champions and this is our first visit.

6 stalls to choose from. They all looked the same on menu.

I picked the one that caught my eye first when we arrived.

Ever since the Hokkaido trip, I appreciate authentic Japanese ramen, especially the char siu set.

The warm soup exuded sesame oil aroma. The noodles smooth and bouncy. The soft golden egg yolk just flowed in my mouth. Of course the 2 huge slices of char siu was the tastiest part.

Noted the length of noodles were just right to lift them into my spoon without the need to cut halfway.

I don’t mind a second round but that was a rather big bowl.

What better way to celebrate the occasion with Japanese beer from Kirin.

We will be back to visit the other 5 stalls.

A shameless self promotion video about the talk I will be presenting tomorrow in front of a huge group of business owners.

I shot this video entirely with the iPhone 4. Not happy with the focussing though… could be better.

The video is pure interview with some of my fellow BNI Rendezvous members using a proper external microphone.

Transition scenes like the traffic light crossing and escalator was shot some time ago with the time-lapse camera app on the iPhone, Miniature.

Editing was done with Sony Vegas pro… Needed it for the quick cuts and sound effects syncing.

I will be playing this video as the opening to my talk. I hope the sound system at Ya Kun Orchard Central will be impactful for the selected music.

Feeling a little nervous right now as I will be speaking back to back right after the famous Tom Abbott, author of 21 Selling Strategies to Growing Your Business.

Ok… Got to go put in last minute touches to my slides.

Camtasia MP4 Error and Medialooks Watermark Removal

Something really annoying happened to my Camtasia today. Wasted four hours of productivity just to figure out the solution.

What happened?

A “medialooks” logo appeared out of nowhere and stuck itself on the top left hand corner of all my renders.

I used the same setting I have always been using for the past few months without problem.

How did the “medialooks” logo get there? What did I do wrong? Was it some overlooked settings?

After going through all my Camtasia settings, I cannot find anything that will even turn on the logo.

Googling for the answer, I learnt that the uninvited “medialooks” logo will appear in videos when there is some kind of QuickTime trial software installed.

Nonsense! I did not install any kind of QuickTime trial programs… wait… I did the regular update of iTunes and QuickTime player 3 days ago.

Then some forum expert suggests uninstalling QuickTime and installing free K-lite codec. So I followed exactly.

Great! The time-sucking problematic logo is gone. BUT now, there is a new issue!

Introducing the second problem…

Camtasia cannot detect MP4 video. There is audio but no visual.

What I am doing is use Camtasia to convert an MP4 video rendered from Sony Vegas to another format.

After tweaking K-lite and messing around with the confusing settings, Camtasia still cannot read an MP4 video properly.

What next?

Uninstalled K-lite codec… re-installed QuickTime…

NOW… Camtasia completely cannot accept MP4 files… and always showing codec error message.

Then it hit me… A little voice spoke…telling me what to do.

“Uninstall and re-install Camtasia!”

YES! it worked.

No need K-lite codec at all. Just install QuickTime first then install Camtasia.

ACTION STEPS

5 Steps to Solving Camtasia MP4 Codec Error and Removing Medialooks Logo Watermark

Uninstall QuickTime.
Uninstall Camtasia.
Restart PC.
Install QuickTime.
Install Camstasia.
