Initially websites were completely static with people coming to them to either get free information or to buy something. But that all changed with the advent of Social Networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. With these sites people can interact with each other, indeed that is why they exist and how they operate.

The early ones catered for a specific group of people, but then internet marketers realised how good they were for getting themselves and their business in front of a lot of people.
