Drive For Value That’s Fuelling A Used Car Boom

There may have been the odd dent or scratch. The interior may not have been pristine. That’s the way it is with first cars, which have, in 89 per cent of cases, been loved and driven before, according to a recent survey by Experian. And almost all of us will finish the way we began – 80 per cent of us never own a new car.

Only eight per cent of participants in the Experian Used Car Report 2012[1] were sure that they would drive a shiny, new car off the garage forecourt when it came to replacing their current vehicle, while more than 70 per cent are pretty certain that a pre-loved model is what they want.

The market is certainly strengthening, with predictions of a 1.5 per cent increase in used car sales every year to 2017, when 7.27 million used cars are expected to change hands. To set that in context, the research found that by the time you reach 55, the chances are that you will have owned 10 used cars.

The drive for value
The big driver is, of course, price, cited by every respondent in the survey as the biggest consideration when they chose a new-to-them car, with most people (48 per cent) paying less than £5,000 for a car that’s between three- and five-years-old, the age range given by 37 per cent of people.

And many believe the best possible value lies in private sales, which the Office of Fair Trading and British Car Auctions believe account for 40 per cent of the used car marketplace.

Buyer beware
With improved build quality, a used car no longer represents the same kind of risk it did 20 years ago. But there are pitfalls, especially as you don’t have the level of protection that you get under consumer law when you buy from a dealer.

For example, one in 12 people reported a private seller hadn’t told them that a car had faulty or missing parts and drivers were really worried that they might discover the car was a write-off or had been clocked (each cited by 58 per cent).

Outstanding finance, which means the car could be repossessed by the lender, was mentioned as a major concern by 57 per cent, while 56 per cent were worried that it might turn out to be stolen or a truly dangerous cut and shut – a car made up of elements of two cars welded together.

Precautions pay
Simple precautions, such as viewing the car at the vendor’s home and collecting it from the same home address, can help to set your mind at rest. You should also cross-reference the details in the logbook to confirm that the seller is the registered owner. And a thorough inspection (bring in a mechanic if you’re not an expert) and test drive should go without saying.

But these won’t uncover a car’s hidden history or answer those serious concerns. One increasingly common step is to order a Vehicle Check report, which can alert you to potential problems. It includes 26 different checks with more than 20 sources, such as the police, the DVLA and insurance companies, and includes verification of critical issues such as mileage and outstanding finance which aren’t covered by some vehicle history checking services.

That way you can buy with confidence – and find yourself a genuine used car that will give you years of reliable motoring.

When wheels are essential and your budget is tight, it’s time to learn how to sniff out a bargain – and a reliable one at that.

An Experian survey[1] has shown that 13 per cent of us buy bargain basement used cars. Predictably, many of these are young drivers who simply can’t afford to pay more, with 28 per cent of 18-25-year-olds spending less than £2,000.

These simple precautions could help to sift the old bangers out from the workhorses that will keep you mobile for years to come.

1. Research your makes and models in advance

You may be seduced by the idea of a sexy coupé or a hot hatch but there’s no point buying one if you can’t afford the running costs. Check reliability ratings, fuel economy and the cost of parts, servicing and insurance before you begin your search. If you still don’t know where to start, the top three picks in the Vehicle Check survey were the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Corsa.

2. Don’t judge a book by its cover…

…or a car by its shiny paintwork and list of extras – unlike the 14 per cent of people in Wales who told the survey they were happy to buy on the basis of online details alone. The most common checks are on bodywork, tyres, the exhaust, the engine, the clutch, the brakes and the interior. Even so, eight per cent of buyers said that sellers did not admit to faulty parts.

3. Call in the experts

A good mechanic (friends and family count) should be able to spot potentially expensive problems. If you’re not an expert, join the 30 per cent of drivers who call one in when they’re keen on a used car. Unsurprisingly, women are more likely to turn to the experts – 33 per cent of them bring in a mechanic, against 28 per cent of men. You can use what you learn to drive down the price.

4. Budget for repairs and replacement parts

Almost 60 per cent of buyers had to pay for some repairs or replacement parts within 12 months of getting a new (to them) used car. Tyres top the list at 34 per cent, followed by brakes and batteries at 13 per cent each, so it’s worth finding out what these would cost in advance and factoring them into the price you’re prepared to pay.

5. Uncover any nasty secrets in its past

What if the car has been stolen, clocked or is a write-off? Worse, it could be what’s known as a cut and shut – a potentially life-threatening hybrid made of chunks of two separate cars welded together. Find out – and join the 45 per cent of used car buyers who commission a vehicle history report – with a Vehicle Check report, which includes 26 different checks with more than 20 sources, including the police, DVLA and insurers – to help you buy that car with confidence.

Get your car checked out

You can take steps to ensure you have a clear understanding of the car’s history by carrying out a full Vehicle Check report. It could help protect you from potential hidden pitfalls, such as cars that are currently listed as stolen or have existing damages through being written off, and can tell you whether a car has outstanding finance recorded against it.[2] Some vehicle history checks do not include critical issues such as mileage, outstanding finance and other high risk factors.

Many of us have a particular model in mind when we’re choosing a used car, but before you fall too much in love with the car of your dreams, ensuring everything is in tip-top condition by completing a full Vehicle Check report will give you confidence in what you are about to purchase.

If you think standard car insurance would be sufficient to cover you in the event of an accident or theft of your vehicle, then you could be disappointed.

Standard car insurance will only cover you for the current market price of your vehicle. So if your vehicle has depreciated in value since you bought it, or you took out finance to pay for it, you could find yourself out of pocket in the event of your vehicle being stolen or damaged beyond repair.

Guaranteed Asset Protection (GAP) insurance covers the difference between the cost you paid for your car and its current market value, whether that's now or several years in the future. It gives you peace of mind that if you do need to replace your vehicle then you will have enough money to buy a like-for-like model or to pay off any outstanding finance or loans.

GAP insurance is particularly beneficial when buying a new car which can depreciate in value very quickly as soon as it leaves the forecourt or if you have bought an expensive car and you are concerned you might not have enough money to replace it with an identical make or model in the event of an accident or theft.

There are different types of policy available:

• A Return to Invoice policy will cover the difference between your settlement and the amount you paid for the car.

• Return to Value policies are available for cars bought privately or at auction. When you take out the policy an independent assessment will be carried out to determine the current market value of your car. This will be the most you will be able to claim for your vehicle if it is stolen or damaged beyond repair.

• Finance GAP insurance covers you for any outstanding finance or loan agreements on the car.

• You can combine a Finance and RTI policy which will cover you for the original price of the vehicle or clear the outstanding finance, whichever is the greater.

• Vehicle Replacement Insurance covers the cost of replacing your car with a like-for-like new model, even if the retail price has increased since you bought it. You will get a brand new replacement of the same make, model and specification of your vehicle or you will get the latest equivalent. If your car is second hand, your replacement car will be closely matched in terms of mileage and specifications.

When buying GAP insurance consider whether your policy covers the excess you will need to pay on your standard car insurance policy, the maximum cover you will need and how long you want the policy to cover. Gap insurers generally offer policies for between one and five years.

You will also want to consider the maximum value the insurer is willing to pay out for your vehicle, the age of your car and whether any other restrictions apply, for example some insurers have mileage limits. It may be helpful to shop around and compare policies online to get the best deal.

How Trends, Colour and Location Can Affect The Value Of Your Car

If you are considering about trying to sell your car, it is useful to be aware of the factors that can affect the asking price. Current trends can make a difference to how much you get for your car, as can the colour of your car and the part of the country you are selling it in.

Since the recession began, car owners have tended to sell off their larger cars such as 4x4s and people carriers in favour of downsizing to a more compact family car or hatchback. Not only can a family raise much-needed cash by downgrading this way, but it also helps them to cut back on their running costs because cars with smaller engines need less petrol.

Bearing this in mind, you will be in a good position if you are selling a smaller model of car because they are so in demand at the moment. On the other hand, if you are contemplating selling a large estate, you may find that you are entering a crowded market.

The value of your vehicle can also be affected by its colour and a recent CAP study revealed that white cars hold 5 per cent more of their value than the average used car.

White cars were once so unpopular that dealers labelled them '60 days white' because it took so long to shift them from the forecourt. However, white is now a very popular colour for many models of car and its resurrection means they can be worth hundreds of pounds more after three years than other cars.

White cars hold their value 6 per cent more than blue cars and 8 per cent more than green models, so if you are trying to sell a white car, you may well find you get more for it because the value has depreciated less.

Geography can also have an effect on the price of a used car, with vehicles in the South East fetching the highest prices after three years, followed by the South West and East Anglia. With cars in Scotland and the North East being valued the lowest after three years, it is interesting to see that car values appear to have the same north-south divide as property prices.

If you are struggling to get a decent asking price for your car, it could be because people in your area just aren't willing to pay that price, don't find the colour appealing or are on the look-out for a much smaller model.

However, you can strengthen your chances by targeting the right market for your car. When selling a large people carrier, highlight the fact that it is a fantastic family car with lots of space for three kids, a dog and a boot full of supermarket shopping. If you are selling a compact hatchback, then point out it's very easy to park and that fuel costs are much lower than other cars.

By selling your car to the right audience and making it seem desirable, you can still get a good price for your car - even if you are trying to sell a green off-roader in Glasgow.

Buying a horse is a long term commitment not one to take lightly.
Here are some things to consider when you go looking at horses for sale. This is a simple guide, aiming to point you in the right direct and avoid costly or dangerous mistakes.

For a beginner, a more mature - bombproof horse will be experienced, not so skittish and used to being handled. Match your lack of experience to the horses' wealth of experience.

Always try the horse out – a trial or loan period is best, get written agreement on the trial period.

What about horse transport?

Go for temperament, not necessarily breed.

Only use auctions if you have expert guidance.

Ask questions:- Is the horse easy to shoe, clip, catch, load?

Does the horse have any nasty habits/vices?

Make sure the vaccinations are up to date?

Are the tack and rugs etc. included in the sale?

Does the horse/pony have a passport?

How long has the seller had the horse? Why are they selling it? Where did they get it from?

Take an experienced person with you to see the horse. Ask around, does anyone know this horses history - it all helps.

When you have trialled and found the perfect horse for you, arranged for it to be thoroughly checked by the vet. Your insurance will probably want this report.

Let the vet know what you want the horse for first, so that he can confirm that it will and be fit and able for your purpose.

Lastly – get a signed and dated receipt.

Traditionally we have kept pets to provide a little extra security for us, but now the tide is turning a little and pet theft/loss is becoming more frequent. With a bit of common sense and pre-planning it should be possible to keep your pet safe well and healthy.

You’ve invested in your pet, so invest a little extra and have it micro chipped. Especially important for dogs and cats. Micro chipped animals are not easy to sell on because they can always be traced back to their owner. Puppies can be micro chipped at birth – but this may depend on the size of the breed. The chip is about the size of a grain of rice.
Costs average between £10 and £30. Microchipping is a one-off process and lasts for life. Your fee covers the cost of the microchip, insertion into the database and implanters time. Vets, welfare centres and training clubs offer this service. Be sure to question what company the microchip will be registered with you will need to know for future reference.
Once your pet is micro chipped, you and your pet’s details are stored in a database along with the microchip’s unique 15 digit code. When a missing pet is found, an authorised user (vet or dog warden) will scan the pet revealing the microchip’s unique code, and contact the microchip company. The microchip company will perform some security checks before releasing your contact details to the authorised user – so that your pet can be reunited with you!

Should your pet go missing:-

Always call your Microchip provider to tell them that your pet has gone missing. Then the microchip company should send out alerts to local vets and dog wardens on your behalf. You should also search your neighbourhood immediately, leaving the description of your missing pet and your contact details with as many people as possible- pet shops, post offices anyone with a notice board. Remember to speak to any postmen, or other service personnel that cover a wide area.

Call your vets, local animal warden and local police station (non-emergency number)..

Place Lost Pet Posters everywhere you can - local shops, vets, lamp-posts, restaurants, superstores. Be sure to check the fly-posting regulations in your area.

Contact your local radio station and newspaper and ask them to put out a message for you, place an advert on AdTrader - we do have a classification especially for this.

Visit other Lost and Found Pet websites (petlog for example), and register your missing pet's details with as many as possible.

Walk around the area the dog went missing with a lead, some treats and maybe the dog's favourite toy. The scents of all these things may bring your lost dog back to you.

Do not shout your lost dog's name as this may make them think they have done something wrong and can scare them off.

Don't give up - Those lost in an area, often stay around that area. Dogs that are lost from anywhere other than home, often return to the exact spot that they went missing from. A lost dog could return at any time, the same day or even months or years later

Once you have found your pet again don’t forget to take down all posters and let everyone know that you are happily reunited.

It might also be worth considering whether or not your garden is dog napper proof, don’t leave the dog tied up outside shops etc, be aware of strangers taking unusual interest in your pet.
Pet owning is fun and good for both of you, with a little bit of care and for thought you should both remain safe and well.

Each breed has its own characteristics and to truly enjoy owning your dog first give some thought to what you want out of your pet. In some cases it may be best to adopt an older dog- there are many for sale on AdTrader. A more mature animal won't be as destructive or bouncy as a puppy may be, but still able to live a happy active life. Your dogs’ temperament should match yours, don't choose a breed that is highly energetic if you're a couch potato!

Medium sized dogs are Border Collies, Bulldog, Basset Hound, Springer Spaniel, whippet or Shar pei.

There are off course many crossbreeds to consider, bred especially to encompass the best of both the original breeds. Cross breeds like labradoodles, and Sprocker spaniels.
Consider the space that you have for a dog. Also whether or not you have small children that may be knocked over, some breeds are more child friendly than others. Some dogs shed their hair or are low moulting and some don’t, some need to be regularly groomed/clipped, all extra time and expense.
Research carefully their characteristics so that you know what to expect, the level of exercise and care needed. If a breed was originally intended to round up sheep or work as a gun dog it will be lively and need stimulation, also will need a fair amount of exercise.
Factor in the how much the vets bills will be, as all dogs need their annual vaccinations, regular flea treatment and worming pills. Boarding costs when you go on holiday and whether or not you can afford to insure your pet .
Also there is the ever popular by product from a dog, not a chore easily ignored!
Dogs give lots of love, but need your input to keep them on the straight and narrow, so if you have the time and inclination there isn’t a much better pet to have!

An excellent idea, but perhaps there are a few things that you should consider first? Your new hens will need just as much attention as the average family pet (although they don’t need daily walks)! They will need fresh water and food daily, to be tucked up in their secure henhouse each night and of course lots of love and affection.
Hens can be very tame, so are quite a good pet for young children and also teach them a little about the food chain. You can source your chickens from a supplier of young point of lay hens, of which there are many on AdTrader, or rescue some ex battery hens. Don’t think that ex battery hens are in any way unhealthy, they are given full vaccinations at chick stage, but what will be new to them is the space to roam and forage for food.
Where ever you source your chicken they will need time to settle in and establish their natural pecking order before their true characters shine through. AdTrader has lots of chicken coups or iglus to house them, or make your own. Chicken houses can be on stilts to help protect them from foxes, or just well protected with chicken wire or fencing. But they must be both fox and vermin proof as well as ventilated.
They will need some purpose made hen food – purchased from County style shops, online or famers supplies as well as fresh produce – veg trimmings and some scraps etc. Also some grit which is necessary for them to digest their food.
Hens need regular worming, about 3-4 times a year and protecting from parasites, most notably Red mite. They may also need other medical checks should problems occur.
But, the pay off is that you will have a plentiful supply of fresh eggs, a slug and snail free garden and some new best friends!

What is even better than loading pictures to enhance your advert? Taking a video of course!
And it couldn't be easier. Most modern cameras have a video setting and even without a commentary a video enables a potential buyer to have a really good look at the item. Especially good on higher priced items like cars, motorcycles etc.
Simply take your video, save the file to your pc making a note of the file name. Create a Youtube account if you don't already have one. Load the video to Youtube. When you are placing the advert on AdTrader simply copy and past the url (web address) of your Youtube video into the relevant field. Simple?

Been to a Festival, played your air guitar? Why not progress? Even Eric Clapton had to start somewhere. Adtrader has lots of music and instruments on offer, but where do you start?
Some would argue that the Les Paul guitars as favoured by Jimmy Page are the best, or Fenders loved by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Keith Richards apparently favours a Gibson Les Paul Classic as well as a Fender Telecaster. If guitar music isn’t your thing, how about starting off with a banjo or mandolin?
Don’t forget that every great band needs a drummer and there are plenty of drums to choose from on AdTrader, together with clarinets, trumpets, keyboards and violins.
Follow Eltons’ example and get yourself a good upright piano, take lessons – you never know could be you playing Wembley Stadium in a couple of years!

No that’s not just me having bad attitude - wanted ads are quite difficult to write, but here are some simple tips to help you out.

Be precise about what you want, give an idea of make and model if possible.
State how much you are willing to pay, so that no one approaches you with silly prices.
Make it clear that you are willing to negotiate on price
If you only want to view local items say that in the advert.
Give an indication of what kind of condition you are going to accept.
If it is an electrical item check it over carefully before buying.
If it's a popular item - iPhone etc beware of scammers.
