Student Transfer Policy and Procedure

As we approach Session II, we want to remind all ESL and ABE teachers, administrators, and office assistants at Newport-Mesa Adult School that our student transfer policy and procedure are as follows…

Student Transfer Policy:

Transfer decisions must be based on multiple assessment data:

optional text-based pretest (administered first week of class)
CASAS Reading pretest (administered during registration)
Speaking assessment (administered by teacher first two weeks of class)
Listening assessment (administered by teacher first two weeks of class)
Writing assessment (administered by teacher first two weeks of class)

We believe that most students are appropriately placed in ESL levels — thanks to our thorough appraisal process (oral test, reading appraisal test, and scoring rubric).

Student Transfer Procedure:

Inevitably, some students are still misplaced. When this happens, please follow our Student Transfer Procedure.

Adult Education in CA: Strategic Planning Process

Learn about the CA Adult Education strategic plan at http://www.otan.us/strategicplanning/index.html. The Needs Assessment is now posted.

The strategic plan will use a system-wide perspective in addressing the need for adult education in California. The plan will reflect an assessment of the context for adult education that considers economic, demographic “driving forces”, statewide educational needs, the federal and state policy environment, system strengths, and comparative information from other states.

Central to the planning process is defining a strategic position that describes the unique value-added role of adult education within the state’s education system and economy.

CASAS ~ Paired Scores & Average Gains are UP!

Today begins the last week of our first session of managed enrollment. How are we doing? Our attendance numbers are down…but our persister rates and average gains are up! Remember, at NMUSD Adult School, we’re about SUCCESS…not just access!

To determine and compare our rates of persistence, we identified the percentage of paired scores at the end of Post Test I Week, 2009 and compared it with the percentage of paired scores at the end of Post Test I Week, 2008. We also looked at a comparison of our average gains. Click here for the data.
