First there were two cells and they multiplied into four, and then eight, and so on. Eventually we started to build enough cells to create a spine, our hearts, arms and legs and all the parts of the body. Between nine and ten months later we are born into the world with great celebration. Little by little we grow, learn to walk, laugh, and play. Have you ever taken time to think about what controls all of this? How do all the cells know where to go and what job they have?
We call it the miracle of life. There is a Life-force that literally makes all of this happen and it continues to do so for your entire life. Every second of every day our bodies’ are replacing billions of cells and rebuilding us. Think of your cells like Legos that kids play with. The can build some amazing cars, buildings, and limitless other structures as long as they have all the right pieces. Much like the Legos, every second we create eight million red blood cells in our bone marrow, to help build our structures, and at the same time our body discards millions of cells. The orchestration of this amazingly complex and beautifully harmonious process is organized by our Life-force or Innate Intelligence. Our Life-force talks to every cell in your body on a regular basis and primarily uses your brain and the rest of your Nervous system to do this. Now imagine if a child tried to build something with broken Legos and he or she did not have all the right pieces for their structure. Fortunately our Innate Intelligence is on the job and knows exactly what to do.
In order for us to have all of our Legos, we need a optimally functioning spine and Nervous system. When we have a healthy spine, our Life-force can send the messages through our spine so we rebuild even stronger than the day before. Many scientists now call this the Brain Body Connection.
So, focusing on the health of our spine is vital if we went to rebuild our structures (Legos) and live the amazing life that we were intended to. This all begs a question. How do we keep our spines healthy.
Making sure that the alignment of your spine is as it should be is number one on the list. This is the primary focus of Chiropractors. Checking your Nervous system and making sure your spine is in proper functioning order allows your Brain Body Connection to work at 100%. Getting checked by a Chiropractor that monitors this ongoing process is the best way to make sure you and your family can experience the best that life has to offer, including being healthy and happy!

Everyday you wake up, rub your eyes a little bit, wipe the cobwebs away, maybe make a few groaning sounds, twist, and finally your feet hit the floor. You’re new today. While you were sleeping, trillions of cells were working overtime, all night, relentlessly rebuilding, repairing, and renewing you. You may have been in dream land but the wisdom of your body was literally upgrading the software of your mainframe computer. From new liver cells, skin, digestive and even heart cells, you rebuild. Of course we all age but our body and more accurately, the life force or energy that runs our body is constantly recreating us. It started before we were even born and continues until we are done on this planet. The one system in our body that is used to coordinate all of this whirlwind of activity is the human nervous system. From the brain, down the spinal cord, out to all the highways and byways of the 50-60 miles of nerves in our body. We are hardwired to systematically thrive. We intrinsically want to be all that we can be. We want to live a full, healthy and of course happy life. We want the same for our families, friends and loved ones. We literally live our lives, consciously and unconsciously through our nervous system, while we are awake, while we are asleep. Similar to a cell phone, the transmitter and then the reception are the most important factors. We literally communicate within our body all the time and making sure our signals are clear is key. Having a optimally functioning spine allows you to have the absolute best communication and clearest signals. When your signals are clear you can rebuild, repair, and renew to the best of your innate ability. From newborns to great grandparents, we all can experience our best. Chiropractic is the vehicle, hop in and enjoy the ride.

Everyone knows exercise is important for overall health. But what is fitness and what is the best way of becoming fit and healthy? From Crossfit to P90X, TRX Training as well as many other exercise routines and systems, they all have their strengths. Running, swimming, yoga, cycling, weight lifting, are some of the more traditional forms of exercise. For example you can find more information on Yoga in our article at Yoga and Chiropractic. Now there’s Zumba, Body Pump and many other group exercise classes. Let’s concentrate on some of the popular and growing systems. Crossfit seems to be one that patients are least informed about, although some practice members are very dedicated to this fitness system. It is based on many different functional exercises on different days allowing you to get stronger in all areas of fitness. One day it could include running, lifting weights, doing body weight exercises as well as rowing and ply-ometrics or gymnastic moves to name just a few. The underlying concept is to push the three known metabolic pathways to the limit effectively and efficiently. What does this mean? Well, think of this. A person who runs marathons is usually not very strong when it comes to lifting weights and the classic weight lifter is not running to many marathons. For that matter, if you watch sprinters in the Olympics they are very specific. They are usually good at short and fast sprints but not longer distance. Why is this? It comes down to the type of training they do.
Crossfit focuses on fitness from all angles. I have used the concepts of Crossfit and added them to my own routine very successfully. If done correctly it really can help you become very fit in all areas of fitness while increasing your overall health. Make sure you learn about Crossfit at www.Crossfit.com before you even think of trying it. If you have questions, please ask me.
Now onto P90X, which has exploded onto the scene. There are two main concepts to this fitness routine. The first is called muscle confusion. It is a way of working your muscles and changing some of the routine over time. This is also known as routine programming which has been around forever, but P90X focuses on it from the start. The biggest part of P90X and fitness is the idea of always keeping track of your routines and exercises and pushing yourself to increase your repetitions. This alone will bring results. Check out www.P90X.com for more information. Both systems are very effective at increasing your fitness, overall function and ultimately your overall health.
Since patients in my office range from weekend warriors to elite athletes, it is important to mention that having your spine checked regularly by a Chiropractor is vital. Many patients have been working out on misaligned spines for years unaware of the damage that exercise causes. Make sure to read through www.AdvancedChiropracticCenter.com and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Hurricane Irene is the first storm of this magnitude for Natick and Metrowest in decades. It seems that it is so significant that people have actually stopped focusing on the earthquake that we had just a couple of days ago, which I observed a pretty interesting thing about. My blog, Earthquake Shakes Chiropractor will go into detail but for today I want to mention something that people are doing in regards to our friendly upcoming hurricane. Of course if you have watched the news or have read Natick Patch in the past day or two you have been reminded to buy food, water, flashlights, batteries, candles, and any other supplies you may need if this hurricane turns out to be as severe as expected. Of course the old saying applies. Better safe than sorry, which reminds me of how people would benefit in regards to their health if the acted in the same way. The phrase of the day is to be prepared. I watch as some people are proactive and continuously prepare themselves and eat a certain way, exercise regularly, create nurturing positive relationships, and visit my office to stay as healthy as they can. This type of person probably has all the supplies they need to weather the storm, and probably has enough reserves to help a neighbor or two if needed. On the other hand, there are people who are ignoring the warnings and may not be so prepared. Maybe they are more of a risk taker. Many of these people treat their health in the same manner. The stress that being unprepared creates is significant even if nothing drastic actually happens. Being prepared brings a sense of calm which does not stress your system. Either way, life happens and how we choose to live reflects our health status. Lifestyle choices have been shown to be the number one factor in our longevity, level of wellness, and overall happiness. Maybe hurricane Irene isn’t all bad. If it reminds us to be prepared and we use it as a life lesson, when it’s all over we can pick up, rebuild and start our new path to a better level of health and wellness for ourselves and our families. Hopefully you’re prepared, keep your family safe this weekend. Starting this week, let’s all get back to fitness, eating well, nurturing our positive relationships and of course make sure you visit your Chiropractor. I look forward to your comments since you’ll have plenty of time in the house.

Yours in good health,

Did you feel the earthquake? As a Chiropractor, patients in our office, Advanced Chiropractic Center asked if I felt the shakes. Everyone in Natick, Framingham, Wellesley, Wayland, and the rest of our Metrowest neighbors are asking each other if they felt it. Go to Starbucks and listen to the conversations, stop by Whole Foods in Framingham or the new location in Wellesley and watch. Everyone wants to know who felt the earthquakes. Did you? Upper state New York felt it as well as Virginia because that’s where they happened originally. Now everyone is watching t.v. and the internet and becoming earthquake experts. They trade facts that they learned from a news anchor or internet story. It’s fun to watch, but one of the most interesting things I noticed is the level of disbelief. Let’s see if you know what I mean. One person asks a friend if they felt it and if they say yes or that they know someone that did, the other person looks at them like they have three heads. People are funny. If they can’t touch, taste, feel, hear or see it, maybe it isn’t real. Meanwhile there are teams of scientists measuring and confirming earthquakes as well as aftershock activities everyday of the week. It is exactly like health and specifically Chiropractic. People go to Chiropractors and use their senses and will base everything on whether they feel something specific or not. Even though the Chiropractor may have specific tools to measure certain health issues such as a subluxation or misalignment in the spine, some people will still look at the doctor like he or she has three heads. Yep, people are funny. It’s the same with Cardiologists and clogged arteries, which can’t be felt until there is a heart attack or other serious symptom. Well anyone could feel a huge earthquake if it’s right under their feet, but who would wait for that? Some people (super smart ones) are actually proactive and come to my office for care before there’s a major crisis. Since we use some of the most advanced computer technology available at Advanced Chiropractic Center, we can detect small issues before they become big issues. Wow, what a concept. Imagine being able to know where the earthquakes may occur the most. That would allow for better and more resilient buildings, quicker evacuation routes, more efficient emergency responses. Hmmm, people really are funny. Hopefully, you’re one of the super smart ones that wants to experience abundant health, be proactive, go to your Chiropractor regularly so you don’t have to worry about any future crisis. So did I, your Chiropractor feel the shakes of the earthquake?

Antibiotics will make infectious diseases obsolete. Vaccines will prevent childhood illness. Help raise money because a cure is right over the horizon. Modern medicine is the reason we are living longer. Gene manipulation and stem cell research will soon be the answer to diseases like Parkinsons, Alzheimers and even cancer. Do you recognize any of these statements?

It’s what I call the New Tide Syndrome. Every year, Tide promises us that the detergent will clean our dirty clothes even better that last year. Weather you believe your clothes are much cleaner or not is up to you. I believe this is mostly marketing hype and the parallels in the Healthcare system are striking in my opinion. The American healthcare system will now be referred to by me as the “sickcare system”, since this is more acurate. Over 25 Billion dollars per year are spent to advertise to Americans and their trusted doctors.

Every year people are promised better results and more health and yet the statistics do not show this as true. Conflict of interest relationships with the FDA and Big Pharma are common place even after they are uncovered. 100,000 lives are lost in the U.S. every year due to hospital errors and millions are harmed by medication errors. This does not mean that people are intentionally injuring patients. Obviously the large majority of health providers have good intentions and yet the medical industrial complex fails to inspire people to become truly healthy.

The World Health Organization has a definition of health. ( www.en.wikipedia.org ) Of course most Americans are unaware of this probably, which is one of the reasons we accept the dismal system that we have.

The United Nations keeps track of Infant Mortality. The infant mortality rate (IMR) is the number of deaths of infants under one year old in a given year per 1,000 live births in the same year. This rate is often used as an indicator of the level of health in a country. Would you think that America was number one on the list and babies would be safe here. We are currently 45 on the list from best to worst. You can verify this on the CIA WORLD FACT BOOK or even as easily as checking Wikipedia.

We are also told that we live the longest which is another fallacy. The United States is currently (2011) ranked at # 50. There are groups of people around the world that do live much longer on average and their quality of health in later years is astounding. Each group that is studied has some definite trends that we can all learn from. Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with modern medicine, as many of them hardly use our supposed breakthroughs. If you would like some of the books and research, feel free to contact me for the sources. The good news is that creating health is not expensive and many of the answers are simple.

I know that this blog will create some opposition but I believe the facts are more important than arguments, it is time for health providers to stand up, unite and make real health changes for Americans. It does not come in a bottle or a pill and it never will. True health comes from within and educating yourself and taking control of your own body and mind. In the year 2011 as I write this article I would like to think that the Medical system would understand how to care about helping people first. When I read an article from WebMd that clearly skews the information away from the scientific literature I have to question their agenda.

A recent back pain article on WebMD shows a perfect example of the major problems our Medical system creates because our reactive sickness care model that the Uinted States currently uses. 80% of Americans will experience back pain, mid back pain, neck pain, lower back pain with sciatica and much of it will become chronic pain. People seek out many treatment options while nerve and muscular problems, degenerative disc disease and arthritis, are said to often be the cause. Treatment with common drugs for back pain simply mask the underlying issues while allowing the decay and degeneration to continue. Treatment such as surgery for back pain is becoming increasingly common with very few patients having successful outcomes and many having complications and chronic pain regardless. Of course on the WebMD site it is difficult to find Chiropractic and back pain together. Since scientific literature shows that Chiropractic is far superior to all other methods it seems questionable that WebMD would leave this out. Chiropractors have been successful for millions of patients with acute as well as chronic back and neck pain issues.

The worst part about WebMDs ignorance is that Chiropractors do not treat back pain, neck pain, muscular pain, sciatica, arthritis, etc. To a Chiropractor this is simply a body signal. The real underlying issue is often known as a Subluxation. While these other more dangerous treatment options do not remove the underlying cause the patient usually ends up in a Chiropractors office years later. Chiropractors continue having excellent success because removing interference in the spine and letting the body’s own healing mechanisms is always benefical to the person. This is not a treatment or modality, it is a unique way of assisting the wisdom of the human body to express itself and function the way it is intended to. Regardless of other options you may learn about, the best choice should include a visit to a Chiropractor to get checked. Make sure you read my upcoming article on how to pick the right Chiropractor.

Which Type of Yoga Is Right For You?

Yoga is becoming a more and more popular activity in the Western world today. As a Chiropractor in Natick it is a pleasure to talk about such a wellness oriented topic. The number of places holding Yoga classes of many different types is on the rise in Natick, Framingham, Wellesley, Wayland and all over Metrowest. With a choice of Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Power Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga and many more it can be easy to get confused. This article will help you to understand the difference between the most popular types of Yoga so you can choose which type is right for you. Yoga even focuses on the spine, as well as your mind body connection which is right up the alley of a Chiropractor. Ok, let’s get started.
Hatha Yoga – In Sanskrit (an ancient classical language of India) “Ha” means “sun” and “tha” means “moon”. This type of Yoga is a relatively slow paced, gentle type of Yoga and is a good place to start if you are completely new to Yoga and don’t know any of the asanas (poses). Like all types of Yoga, Hatha Yoga aims to unite the mind, body and spirit.
Ashtanga Yoga – Ashtanga means “eight limbs” in Sanskrit. It’s a fast moving, intense style of Yoga based on a progressive sequence of asanas, synchronized with the breath. Ashtanga Yoga can be quite physically demanding as you are constantly move from one asana in the sequence to the next, so you’ll find that it will improve your stamina as well as your flexibility and strength. Can you see why I, as a Chiropractor likes this one?
Power Yoga – This is a western interpretation of Yoga and is based on Ashtanga Yoga. A Power Yoga class may not necessarily stick to the exact sequence of poses like Ashtanga Yoga does, but it does involve practicing a series of poses without stopping and starting. This depends on the instructor and their level of expertise.
Iyengar Yoga – This type of Yoga is based on teachings by B.K.S Igengar and concentrates on the correct alignment and form of the body. Unlike Ashtanga Yoga, there is an emphasis on holding each pose for a long period of time rather than moving constantly from one pose to the next. Iyengar Yoga uses props such as blocks and straps to help align the body into the different poses. I love the alignment concept of course.
Vinyasa Yoga – Vinyasa means breath-synchronized movement and is another fast paced type of Yoga, with an emphasis on breathing. A practice typically starts with sun salutations and moves on to more intense stretching. Throughout the practice each pose is balanced with a counter pose.
Bikram Yoga – Otherwise known as “Hot Yoga”, Bikram Yoga is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees, with a humidity of around 40%. Generally a sequence of 26 different poses is practiced during a Bikram Yoga class and the hot temperature helps to loosen muscles. Due to the high temperature most people sweat a lot during the class and this helps to cleanse the body of toxins. You’ll either love it or hate it because of the heat.
If you’re just starting out or have never done any Yoga before, you may want to try a few different types of yoga to find out what you like best. Remember, there’s no rule that says you have to stick to one type of Yoga.
My wife and I have even done yoga at home before. Of course we get regular Chiropractic care so having your structure healthy first is very important. A few years ago she went to a certain Yoga class and did not really enjoy it. My wife then tried Bikram and has been addicted ever since. There are several very good studios in the area and I have met the instructors so if you are curious or would like to know about the different Yoga studios in Natick, Framingham, Wayland, Wellesley or surrounding towns, please ask me the next time you’re in the office. Chiropractic and Yoga, a match made in heaven.

If there’s one thing that the large majority of patients I see would like to have help with, it’s increasing their energy. How’s your energy? I mean before the second cup of coffee or foo foo drink from Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. Are you fatigued? Fatigue is one of the most common complaints in any doctor’s office. Chronic fatigue has become a household phrase. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is becoming one of the most common yet misunderstood diagnoses in America today. There are many reasons for having a lack of energy. Working too many hours, emotional stress, health conditions and even too much late night tv when your favorite show is on. However, there is a very common factor in fatigue. The good news is that there is a simple way to increase your energy and it’s effective and incredibly easy. So what is it?

Remember when you went to a school dance and the boys stood on one side and girls on the other side of the room? Everyone was nervous and wanted to talk to other people but their legs felt like concrete. Your heart was beating faster and you could not think of what to say.

Then the music started. After a few minutes, one of your favorite songs came on and you and your friends looked at each other and were nervous and excited. The next few minutes were a little bit of a blur but the next thing you knew you were standing across from a person and you were both moving your legs, arms and body awkwardly to the beat.

I’m back from my daydream. Thanks for joining me. The point is that there was what we call a catalyst. The music somehow started a reaction inside that helped move everyone across the floor. There is a major catalyst in our bodies that is similar to the most amazing music. It’s called enzymes. Digestive enzymes break down the food into nutrients that we need for every function in our bodies. They have been called the spark of life by some scientists. The food we eat is packed full of these tiny spark plugs. Food comes with enzymes so you can break it down while using very little of your own. This allows you to conserve your energy for other functions. Meanwhile, we consume large amounts of energy drinks and caffeine to get through the day.

So how do we increase our energy 100%? First, we need to start eating whole foods and make sure most of them are fresh and not cooked, micro-waved etc. The second thing we need to do is increase our fresh, clean water intake. Both of these are the easiest and most effective ways to increase your energy through the roof. Try this for one week and let me know how you feel.

Interested in one more great way to increase your energy? Check out our upcoming articles on increasing energy.

Create great health!
