The Network Virtualization and SDN Europe Conference in Berlin last week was a great opportunity to track industry progress on a number of important fronts in particular 5G, Cloud Native Infrastructure and Network Automation. 2019 is expected to be pivotal in the development and deployment of NFV & SDN with communication service providers (CommSPs) preparing their Virtual Infrastructure roll-outs based on the huge potentiality of 5G. The advancements in workload consolidation and virtualization technology on general purpose servers have provided the means by which carriers can drive cost and operational efficiencies into their networks ahead of widespread 5G deployment. The agility that the new virtualized network brings to CommSPs will allow them to spin-up services faster than ever before to meet customer demands and expectations. One specific area which Advantech, Intel® and fellow Network Builders are focused on is the security element of the network and more specifically at exploring how to accelerate encryption processing while freeing up CPU cycles for application and VNF processing.

Intel teamed up with with Network Builders Advantech, Red Hat and Fortinet on their booth at the event to demonstrate the importance of encryption speeds in a virtual infrastructure context. The demo we showed there offered further insight into application performance enabled by hardware acceleration using 2nd Gen Intel® Xeon® Processors and Intel® QuickAssist Technology on Advantech’s SKY-8101D server. The diagram below offers an overview of the foundation building blocks used for the benchmark demo.

It shows how Intel Select Solutions for NFVI align with the ETSI NFV Reference Architecture and encompass the NFVI-tuned hardware platform along with NFV software. An Advantech SKY-8101D server hosted the benchmark demo. Intel Select Solutions for NFVI do not specify the NFV Management and Orchestration or the VNFs, but are developed with a goal of being able to support an ecosystem of VNF and Management options. The SKY-8101D verified Select Solution for NFVI focuses first and foremost on delivering an optimized base platform to provide a level of performance tested and verified with industry leading ket performance indicators.

Intel supplied test scripts ensure that the settings recipe for BIOS, firmware, drivers and various OS options are implemented in order to deliver on the performance promise, that the platform under test is verified through extensive regression testing, and that it is continuously refreshed to integrate the latest tested and tuned SW and Drivers. Intel Select was designed to offer an ideal foundation for any CommSP wanting to efficiently deploy a modernized and transformed 5G ready network.

In our demonstration we presented real application performance enabled with Hardware Acceleration using Second Generation Intel® Xeon® Processors and Intel® QuickAssist Technology. The test set-up is based on the Advantech SKY-8101D, an NFV-ready server with NUMA balanced Gen 3 PCIe x 16 slots equipped with two 2nd Gen Intel Xeon Gold processors. The server is a verified Intel Select Solution for NFVI V2 and certified with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenStack. The solution is available and shipping today.

Above is an overview of the system configuration. A Spirent packet generator is configured to generate and receive traffic over two Advantech PCIE-2320 Dual 40Gig Ethernet adapters. Traffic on the ingress port of the first adapter is encrypted by Fortinet’s Fortigate VNF running on CPU #0. Encryption is performed in the first instance using the Intel QuickAssist hardware acceleration engines in the chipset and in a second instance without acceleration using CPU cores for software encryption. Encrypted traffic is transmitted via the second port on the same adapter and received on the first port of the second 40GbE adapter. The encrypted traffic is decrypted by a second Fortinet Fortigate VNF running on CPU #0. Decryption is performed in the first instance using the quickassist hardware acceleration engines in the chipset and in a second instance without acceleration, using CPU cores for software decryption. Now let’s take a look at the demo Eric van Vliet at Advantech prepared for the event along with some additional context.

[This post contains video, click to play]

Let’s review the results of the benchmark.

The Fortinet Fortigate Virtual Next-Gen Firewall was able to achieve up to 3.5 times higher IPsec throughput using Intel QuickAssist acceleration on an Intel 6230N CPU versus an Intel 6230N without Intel QuickAssist Technology. This also results in an extra 10% more headroom available for VNF processing by the CPU.

Advantech has been heavily engaged with Intel and select Network Builders since its origins several years ago. Since last year we have been collaborating closely with Intel and partners on Select Solutions. We began with Intel Select Solutions for NFVI based on two white box servers platforms with similar dual Intel Xeon architectures which we had designed for different network locations – one with a Telecom Infrastructure slant and the other for network security and enterprise applications. As of today there are several new platforms in the dual server range which are Intel Select Solution for NFVI v2.

After unveiling of our first NFVI platforms at 5G world in London, our next milestone was the launch of our first Select Solution for uCPE just after SDN & NFV World Congress in The Hague. At that event numerous communication service providers and ecosystem players took part in a whitebox safari searching out valid whitebox uCPE suppliers. Universal CPE really started to resonate from there on as service providers were clearly on a path to ‘THE Universal Platform”

The Intel Select Solution program has been resounding with many of them, especially for uCPE where the Xeon D-2100 offers a lot more processing headroom at a reasonable price.

In discussions with other Intel Network Builders, with carriers, and with enterprise customers they clearly identified the benefits of the Intel Select Solution initiative as one that simplifies the migration to the software defined network by taking the guessing and verification work out of the evaluation phase. In addition deployment is more efficient if the supply chain takes care of verifying the solutions and keeping them up to date with the latest enhancements. It goes without saying that this also helps to ensure the build out of more reliable infrastructure, following industry needs and adapting to new workload demands.

After I have finished presenting the key Advantech products, Eric takes a closer look at specific Deployment Scenarios & Use cases, in particular where network packets are being processed and how that applies to Next Generation Central Office (NGCO) elements.

After the NGCO use case Eric covers Enterprise rollouts – and notably uCPE Segmentation + System Sizing.

Prior to the summary and Q&A we discuss our ecosystem partners, in particular at the NFVI layer as they are key to successful deployments.

Edition #21 of the MPLS+SDN+NFV World Congress was held last week in Paris and was once again an important gathering of service providers and enterprise networking players.

At the event, Advantech joined the Telco Systems NFVTime partner ecosystem in their uCPE Quick Deploy Zone. Together with Fortinet we teamed up to give a live demonstration featuring the provisioning and monitoring of Fortinet’s SD-WAN and NGFW consolidated VNF, running on Advantech white box uCPEs, powered by Telco Systems NFVTime management and orchestration suite. In addition, TPX, a US-based managed services provider joined the Quick Deploy Zone to share its unique NFVTime uCPE deployment solution and experience.

The NFVTime partner ecosystem enables communications and managed service providers to build compelling NFV business cases with a clear and tangible return-on-investment. The ecosystem of partners helps facilitate the rapid deployment of end-to-end uCPE solutions to fully automate the launch and management of new NFV services with zero-touch provisioning.

For those not familiar with NFVTime, it’s a service-ready, plug-and-play uCPE solution that provides a complete service environment for rapidly launching virtual network services. The NFVTime suite includes all required components to shorten the time-to-market for NFV deployments and supports invest-as-you-grow deployment models.

NFVTime-OS runs on a range of Advantech whitebox uCPEs and NFVTime-Central provides a cost effective uCPE MANO solution that supports uCPE and services lifecycle management starting from zero-touch-provisioning through VNF launch and monitoring.

Let’s take a closer look at the show set-up to get a better view of how the partner ecosystem lets service providers select and combine components to deploy and activate a custom-built uCPE solution quickly and easily. In this example, the service provider has selected components from the following vendors:

Telco Systems: NFV orchestration (deployment/provisioning/management) of VNFs

Advantech: uCPE Intel-based white box

Fortinet: Security VNFs (SD-WAN and vNGFW)

Advantech’s white-box uCPE portfolio brings scalable processing performance, outstanding network throughput and flexible connectivity options to NFV rollouts. Optimized for uCPE and SD-WAN, the white boxes are powered by processors based on Intel® architecture and are scalable from 2-16 cores using Intel-based SoCs, and up to 28-cores using a single socket Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor. Advantech commercial-off-the-shelf uCPEs are readily available and come with a choice of hybrid LTE, WiFi, xDSL, G.fast & SFP+ configurations, depending on the selected platform.

If you are one of the 100,000 Mobile World Congress telecom pilgrims heading for Barcelona next week, like me you are probably struggling with what to pack. From the warm and sunny 2017 edition and it’s crowded outside café terraces between halls, to the cold snow show of 2018, packing this year will be quite a dilemma, especially if you are going to be there for the full tour of duty. As a busy business community we really should be influencing fashion designers more and challenging them to come up with better all-weather connected solutions. The market is huge and well worth a crowdfund or two.

Unfortunately, uCPE doesn’t stand for Universal Clothing which you can slice, unzip and repurpose depending on temperature, humidity and the elements in general. The royal UCPE that many of us will be discussing at MWC is about consolidating virtual networking functions onto open, commercial-off-the-shelf servers or network appliances (we often refer to them as white box uCPEs at Advantech). Hot Topics – this year they will be about adapting uCPE at the edge to bridge between 5G and IoT and overall orchestration from sensor to gateway to edge cloud and cloud.

On the 5G side we are definitely anticipating some enterprise backhaul interlocks at MWC, and with certain members of the Intel Xeon D-2100 family offering us so much compute headroom, we’ll probably be talking fronthaul options too, with a touch of software defined radio (SDR) running on some of the cores.

uCPE Mobile Backhaul

On an entry level uCPE, a 10GbE copper uplink to a 5G modem might prove more cost effective than fiber on Atom C3000 and Intel Xeon D-2100 white box uCPEs. Fiber could be the way to go to extend cable lengths to outdoor antennas – let’s see. MWC is always a great touchpoint for feedback and we expect to get into some deeper discussion about how verified Intel Select Solutions for uCPE can help.

White box Fronthaul – don’t think big! think small!

Meanwhile on the fronthaul side where the boundary of the Virtual Edge is still being redefined, we expect small cell connectivity to be on the design-in discussion check-list as well as Private LTE and 5G. In the new virtual edge, very diverse radio protocols need to be supported and co-exist with other network functions (as well as new revenue generating applications of course). At previous editions of MWC, Advantech demonstrated how its PAC-6009 carrier-grade blade server with nearly 300 Intel Xeon cores truly excels there. It is rugged and compact, easily connected to existing CPRI fronthaul and to additional small cells (up to 108 new Ethernet-ready Remote Radio Heads). The system accelerates the process of building solutions for NB-IoT and vRAN. Thanks to skillfully written vRAN software from Amarisoft and the support of AW2S we were able to demonstrate how to extend the same programming and deployment environment of the cloud to existing aggregation sites requiring a complete NFV makeover. Watch out for Amarisoft at this year’s show they will be demonstrating their gNodeB for 5G on commercial off the shelf servers at booth #5K13.

vRAN in a box

Since the previous edition of MWC, processor core density has rocketed, with 28 Intel Xeon scalable cores now possible in a compact single socket white box server. Count 56-cores in a deeper 1U or short-depth 2U enclosure. Servers and Whitebox UCPEs based on the Intel Xeon D-2100 family are also now available enabling further innovation at both the enterprise edge and in initiatives relating to the outdoor access network. This year, we will not only see UCPE and SD-WAN functions running in extremely compact white boxes – the extra processor headroom will also enable the addition of SDR and vRAN functions making small-footprint whitebox uCPE fronthaul real for small cell and Private LTE networks. Watch out at MWC because a white box revolution is in the making with true server-class processing along with rich and secure connectivity options that can provide low latency data pre-processing, stream processing and analytics. 2019 will be the year of the converged platform.

Convergence and NGCO – more cores please!

Advantech’s SKY-8000 servers have been designed to harness that compute power for the transformation of traditional central offices into open and programmable aggregation points ready to host the 5G converged smart edge. To accelerate deployment, commercial software solutions from selected Intel Network Builder partners are now available, with virtual edge functions such as vBNG, vEPC, vCMTS, vSecGW or vPE able to serve tens of thousands of subscribers in a small Next Generation Central Office (NGCO) rack. Dual-socket servers capable of 200Gbps per socket of balanced I/O are now available for both 600mm telco and 900mm data center racks with no change in software loads. In addition, the Intel Select Solutions for NFVI initiative has helped Advantech partners benefit from readily available and verified platforms. These benefits can now be passed on to CommSPs to help further accelerate time to deployment.

MWC18 – Building the IoT Infrastructure

CommSP booths at MWC18 started to look like CES displays as a new generation of applications and services came together under the 5G promise in order to sell the new IoT world. Now, with so much innovation over the past year and 5G actually in deployment or in trials, I don’t think we’ll have much time to bother about the weather in Barcelona as we become captivated by discussions on how to close the gaps in the network infrastructure for IoT deployments and innovative new ways to meet latency and QoS metrics that will make the next wave of applications real.

A strong market outlook and uCPE uptake by communication service providers has led to the introduction of a growing number of hardware and software solutions from a vibrant ecosystem of suppliers. Solutions are available that dramatically simplify complex networks, allow organizations to reduce their capital outlays on equipment, and deliver services to end-users in a more flexible, agile and cost-effective way from a centralized location.

Advantech and 6WIND announced today a white box Border Router bundle for Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The new bundle gives ISPs the choice of 1 to 100G virtual routers (vRouters) combined with a right-sized x86 server to fulfill Border Router requirements through white box networking. Advantech is offering demonstrations and appointments with 6WIND at Mobile World Congress Barcelona.

The White Box Border Router for ISPs

The 6WIND and Advantech Border Router bundle fulfills the promise of white box networking by integrating 6WIND’s vRouter software appliances with Advantech’s commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) servers, giving ISPs an alternative to expensive, proprietary hardware routers.

6WIND’s vRouter offers ISPs a complete Border Router software suite for bare metal and virtual machine (VM) deployments. It delivers high performance BGP links to upstream traffic and OSPF links to downstream traffic, IPv4/IPv6 IP Forwarding, Dynamic Routing, NAT, Firewall and High Availability. Management options include a CLI and NETCONF/YANG-based APIs for integration with third-party network management solutions.

Advantech’s x86 server family offers ISPs pre-configured and configurable options to meet all-size network requirements. The following servers are available today to provide a Border Router bundle range as follows:

There’s a revolution underway in enterprise networking and it’s gaining more followers as businesses accelerate their deployment of Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WANs). CIOs are realizing that SD-WAN technology gives them greater agility, helps them to alleviate network congestion and allows them benefit from more cost-effective and flexible internet connectivity.

Imagine a network where a new branch office or retail outlet can be brought online and securely connected to a corporate WAN via the internet in minutes. A network where managed service providers or enterprise IT departments are able to remotely deploy virtual network functions and instantiate new network service chains in a matter of seconds using state-of-the-art management and orchestration tools. A network store where network administrators can purchase and deploy new services at the click of a button through self-service portals. And ultimately a network that is abstracted from the physical to provide unprecedented agility and cost efficiencies.

There is no need to imagine further. Thanks to their increasing adoption of software defined networking (SDN), software defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) and network functions virtualization (NFV), service providers have been able to make significant changes in their approach to enterprise connectivity at the network edge. An approach which simplifies the way networks are designed, deployed, and managed. This translates to greater flexibility, enabling both provider and customer to monetize on new business models faster, and to lower costs.
