The latest issue of Climbing Magazine came out today and I have a couple photos in it. I didn’t shoot the cover, but you can see my shot of Tee Kuoch on the bottom left of the first spread struggling through the Binge and Purge offwidth in Indian Creek. Also there’s a shot of Terje Aamodt on the classic Autobot boulder problem in my backyard in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The low December sunbeams glance off the earth like a stone skipping across a lake, and the ancient towers cast their shadows across the red land. Yes, Indian Creek — the perfect place to pass the waning days of this unseasonably warm autumn. After six months of constant life curveballs, it was fantastic to be dusty in the desert, zoning out and climbing splitter sandstone in my favorite place on earth.

I love the wind howling through the trees, the breeze kissing my skin and whipping my hair. The river was empty, though, the creek bone dry. The water was gone. If the river returns in the spring, the cottonwoods will blossom, and the desert will bloom with color and life. Will it happen? Will I be back to see it? Will the bluebirds and butterflies return with the water?

For the third year in a row I have a shot in the Woman of Climbing, Sharp End Publishing‘s annual calendar, which is by far the best climbing calendar out there. Buy one and get stoked for 2013.

I just now saw a copy of one of the final issues of the now-unfortunatley-defunct Urban Climber Magazine, which closed shop a week or so ago after a long run of one of America’s few climbing magazines.

In it is a story about Santa Barbara that I provided pictures for, kinda like the recent story for Britain’s Climb magazine.

The other story I provided some photos for was an article about the best 100 boulder problems in America. You’ll find my bro Terje Aamodt on Bishop’s uber-proud Atari (V6) (that’s the second page, upper right corner) as well as a random dude I shot about 10 years ago on Streetcar Named Desire (V6) in Joshua Tree (that’s the guy in the purple shirt on the right half of the first image, hanging by two hands and shot from above).

I didn’t shoot the cover but am including it for reference.

I woke up in a bungalow in the pomegranate orchards of Turkey’s Climbers Garden on April 26 just as the sun started to rise, and I sent these images from Santa Barbara over to Climb, one of Britain’s largest climbing magazines. Santa Barbara was my old stomping ground, and it’s where I spent my formative years as a climber, photographer and human being. If you haven’t been there, you should go. It’s awesome.

Some fun ski images I shot last winter in Norway were just published in Fit for Fun, Germany’s biggest sports and fitness magazine. Estimates put it at 2.09 million readers. These images came from two separate shoots, one in a snowstorm at a school in downtown Molde, and another under a bridge on the outskirts of town. Here’s the cover, for reference. I didn’t shoot it but it might help people track down the issue. Be sure you can read German — and if you can, let me know what the article says!

Eric Hörst, basically the world’s most published expert on training for climbing, just sent off his newest book, Learning to Climb Indoors, to the publisher. I shot the cover.

Stoked to be working with Eric after reading his books for so many years. He is the master — if you’re serious about the sport, you have to read some of his books. My favorites are Maximum Climbing and Training for Climbing.

It’s funny that what follows came to my attention today — it’s a story about running while on vacation that was published recently in Canadian Running Magazine. An image I shot was used on the opening page to illustrate a section about running in Norway. Here’s the cover — I did not shoot the picture, but it’ll help you find the issue if you’re so inclined.

The story struck a chord I just wrapped up a trip to Rome, where I went every morning on incredible urban runs, watching the city awaken and come to life. One day I took a 12k around the Vatican, the next a 10k around the Colusseum, the next a 12k through Rome’s northern end, so on and so on. On my iPhone I had a GPS-enabled offline map of the city, so when we got lost I pulled out the phone and tracked us down. I can’t imagine a better way to see Rome than running through hidden alleyways as shopkeepers open their doors and welcome a new day. The streets are super narrow, and every so often you can peer down a long straight road and catch a fleeting glimpse some 2,000 year old landmark.

What a place.

This year’s shot features a great climb called Hull I Himmelen, 5.13a, at a crag called Mjelvahammeren in Norway. I snapped this in the early days of spring before heading back to the US for the summer. We got pretty lucky with the weather.

Last year’s calendar featured a shot from Hollow Mountain Cave in Australia.

There are some unreal pictures in this year’s calendar. Heidi and her husband Fred, who run Sharp End, are making this annual calendar better and better.
