2017 Adventures of the Soul

Adventures of the Soul, my 2017 theme, emerged in my quest to stretch myself personally. To find things that made me uncomfortable, experience things that rocked me to the core. I first wrote about my theme in my blog. The past year has been full of adventures that have filled my soul with challenge, learning and immense growth.

What I learned about myself last year shaped my adventures. Personally, accomplishing big goals has always come easily, well most of the time. My mind is very pragmatic and this allows me to break down a goal into small manageable chunks. This year I set out on some adventures, with excitement, I share with you (some of ) my 2017 adventures.

A quest to learn as much as possible about Arizona, through Valley Leadership

Valley Leadership was a true adventure beyond my imagination. Originally, when I applied and was selected I thought the experience would be a good professional development program. What I found instead was a group of people that have become my close friends and people I can count on to show up in the community. The small group project stretched me to think through complex problems and government paperwork to figure out how to help start a nonprofit called 19 North. We had the opportunity to tour many of Arizona's hidden gems. After a year of stretching myself, getting uncomfortable and enjoying the ride I was selected to give the graduation speech. Through this journey, I realized that Arizona has become my home. The longest place I have lived since I was a child, is now the place I call home.

The forming of a non-profit giving society, The Joyride Society, with four of my like minded friends

The Joyride Society officially kicked off last year in January and we began recruiting members shortly after. We hosted a small gathering at a founders house and invited others to join us in our journey to spreading joy. We were overwhelmed with the response that resulted in several new members. After a year, we are about to give out the first gift in Jan of 2018. This has been an exciting journey one that I am proud of. Check us out at http://www.joyridesociety.org/.

My quest to raise $10,000 for LLS in the FY17 Fiscal Year

Bummer, I didn't accomplish this... I exceeded this goal! I raised over $25,000! WHOOO HOOO. This year has been a great year in the area of blood cancer breakthroughs. I had a part in that by raising valuable funding for research. But there is still work to be done.

A new business helping others being efficient, organized and in charge of their time

Helping others to take charge of their time is one thing I am most excited about. I have spent the last year, thinking about and dreaming up how I can help others. I realized that my talent is helping people achieve their goals at work and in life. My new business is launching Jan 27th with a workshop followed by a 3-month journey! A book mulling around in my head

This adventure is still developing, two outlines currently in process.

Travel to new lands

Well, I altered this one a bit. I traveled this year but I traveled to many familiar places. This year I was fortunate to travel to Cabo with some new and old friends. We had a week of relaxing, enjoying the beach and soaking up rays! I also traveled to well known lands in California and Florida for races this year. It was nice to be back in my old beach town of Melbourne enjoying the familiar landscape and faces.

One trip was especially memorable. A trip with my mom to the World Championship Horse Show. It was the first time I can remember ever watching a horse show with my mom. Growing up she sat in the stands with my Aunt cheering me on, then came back to the barns and while I worked. It was amazing to be back in that arena seeing faces of the past and enjoying the beautiful horses with my mom. A memory I will cherish forever.

Stretching my limits physically with upcoming challenges

This year was filled with physical challenges! I traveled to CA to participate in the Light Side Challenge at Walt DisneyLand and completed the Rebel Challenge (10K and 1/2 Marathon in one weekend).

Then I traveled to Walt Disney World in April to run the Dark Side Challenge. Same distances different parks. Both events I have participated in every year since they started earning my Disney Legacy Runner Status.

Then it was on to Tour de Tucson a 54 mile bike ride. I have wanted to get back on the bike for a longer ride for a bit and was able to complete the ride this year, making an old friend a closer friend in the process.

Finally the last stop was the Space Coast 1/2 Marathon in Florida in November. I stayed with my first Team in Training Coaches and it was nice to be back running in familiar territory with good friends.

Developing deep relationships with close friends

The relationships I formed in Valley Leadership were the biggest surprise of the year. There is not a week that has gone by that I have not talked to or did something with one of my new friends. Even more surprising was how close we became so quickly. I furthered developed relationships with long term friends and got closer with others I never expected would be my friends.

Learning and growing in new areas (Toastmasters)

Joining JLP Toastmasters was one of the best decisions of 2017. I love to challenge myself especially when it comes to learning new things. Toastmasters has provided me with a creative outlet and well defined goals to strive for. The JLP Toastmasters group is exceptional! The women are supportive and encouraging, one would expect nothing less from the JLP.

I stretched myself to explore new roles

In 2017, I set out to find some new roles and stretch myself to do things differently. I joined the ResilientMe Board of Directors and was elected President. This was an easy fit for me with my passion for youth in foster care and building nonprofits. In the past six months, we have grown the board, stabilized the fundraising model and laid the groundwork for program expansion.

Junior League has been a part of my volunteer DNA since 2004 when I joined in Florida. This year I made the transition from active membership to sustaining membership and rolled off the board in Phoenix. The League has provided a multitude of training opportunities and shaped my passion for the community. I applied and was selected for a position on the Governance Committee of the Association of Junior Leagues' International. I am honored to have been selected and look forward to serving.

Adventures of the Soul - 2017 did not disappoint.

Live life to the fullest, a promise I made to my brother. I will continue to keep this promise as long as God allows me to. Life is good, my soul is full.

July 8th...Frozen in time

July 8 every year is the day that stops me dead in my tracks. It's like I'm frozen, paralyzed and can't move forward. It's the feeling in my gut of dread and pain. It's a strange thing actually, I don't need to look at a calendar to know it's July 8th, I feel it in every fiber of my body.

I remember very vividly; his smile and his personality and his laugh. Jokes he liked to make, the pranks he pulled on people, and his kind and warm heart. I also remember very vividly, his end. I remember seeing him for the first time with a bald head, frail body and broken spirit. I remember thinking, he's scared to death.

I'll never get out of my head the memory of the late night phone call with my mom told me Mike didn't make it. I can still hear my scream today and see myself falling to the floor. I was frozen, paralyzed and it stopped me dead in my tracks.

I can feel the emotion, pain and suffering from the funeral like it was yesterday. Other days it seems so long since I heard his voice.

Nothing has changed in 17 years for my family, July 8 continues to be the day that everything is frozen in time.

160 people today, July 8th, will die because of blood cancer. Thousands of family and friends will become frozen and July 8th will also become the day they dread and feel in every fiber of their body.

It's time to do something, stand up to cancer, and rid the world of the terrible disease. Nothing can change July 8th for me or my family, but together we can stop the cycle.

Tonight was my last Junior League Board meeting. As I left, I realized this is the first time in long time I was not leaving for another big challenge or adventure. I am leaving to take the time to discover what is next. This is more than ok. It's time to evaluate and rediscover my goals, dreams and aspirations.

I am excited about my future adventures. Right now I'm just honoring this time in between.

Summertime projects await!

Summertime is my favorite time of year! I feel the most relaxed,
creative and energetic during the summer. Summer cannot get here soon enough this year! I anxiously await several of my summer projects!

Summer begins and will kick off some creative, bold and life changing adventures. SOUL Adventures!! In my past, I thought if I worked harder and longer hours that I would be filled up emotionally and achieve success. The cycle is never ending; work, paycheck, bills, work, paycheck, bills. This is not what life's about and it does not add any value to my adventures of the soul!

It's time to do something BOLD, Creative, Fun and life changing! What could that be? I have searched my soul, thought about my impact on the world and how I can make an impact I truly desire. What I learned and observed about myself motivated me to evaluate what I have come to believe and who I thought I wanted to be.

The End of an Era

Today, May 3rd, 2017 marks the end of an Era. When I joined the Junior League in 2004, I never imagined the impact the organization would have on my life or the friendships that would form.

I joined the South Brevard league and within minutes I knew the decision was the right decision. I was challenged to lead areas I never thought possible. Within a few years I was leading a council of 80 members raising valuable funds for the mission. I lead the communications council and negotiated sophisticated media contracts. The league took a chance on me and challenged me to excel. The skills I learned in the 5 years in South Brevard laid the foundation for my future career path.

In 2009, I transferred to the Junior League of Phoenix. Transferring to a new league was intimidating and I was nervous going through the transfer program. At my first General Membership Meeting, I sat down next to someone who would become a life-long friend and BFF, Annette Tanori. The JLP was a sea of endless opportunities and a chance to become a transformational leader. I have lead the Foundation, lead the strategic plan, lead the committee to select community programs and created many programs along the way. What I didn't realize at the time is that the JLP would be a place where I would make meaningful life-long friendships. The JLP has become my tribe, my training grounds and enriched my life in ways I never imagined.

Tonight, I officially become a sustaining member of the Junior League. I could not have ended on a better note! I was honored to give out $60,000 in Funding to the Community! The foundation provided the JLP with the largest gift ever $22,800! Most notably, I was honored to present the Sandra Day O'Connor Award to my BFF Jennie Elser. This is my tribe, excelling in every level! #Proud #LeavingaLegacy

Now I am a sustainer! I am nervous, I question my decision, and consider what is next. As the chapter closes, I am excited to begin the journey into a new status and new adventures.

People are asking, what's next? Honestly I don't know. What I do know, is this is not goodbye. The Junior League will always be part of my life. I love my tribe, I love the League. #IAmJLP

2017 Adventures of the Soul

As each year comes and goes, I reflect on my time on this planet. Am I really doing in my life what I am called to do? When I reach my last breath will I be happy how I spent my life, or will I regret it? These are the questions of many. I would venture to bet most would do things differently if they had a "do over". For years, I have been annually evaluating the previous year's activities, goals, and my ideas for the upcoming year on New Year's Eve. While, I don't believe in resolutions, I do believe in planning and ensuring that a focus is on the plans. Many years ago, I started assigning a Theme for the Year. This has
proven to be a good way to ensure that my year is filled with purposeful activities that bring meaning and value to my life.

As I reflected on 2016, I had accomplished my major goals and initiatives and really experienced the level of achievement I had set out to achieve. I had finally found a "job" that fills my need for analytical thought and creativity and also fills a higher purpose. I had made a big impact by opening my home to a foster child. I was accepted to Valley Leadership and stretched my comfort zone by joining Suns 88 and Toastmasters. Things are good, but.... good is status quo.

In my reflection, I realized that it had been a number of years since I did something that was transformational to the core of my being, down to my soul (the very fabric of who I am). And from there my 2017 Theme was born: Adventures of the Soul!. What does this mean? To me this means doing things that are uncomfortable, things that stretch my normal everyday, things I am not naturally good at AND experiencing cultures and activities that are not my norm that rock me down to the core.

What kind of adventures am I seeking? Who knows, but I will know them when they present themselves. I do know that I don't balk when presented or decide that "obligations" should stand in my way. I want to stretch my learning, change my capability, gather more content for a great life story, become unstoppable, gain compassion for new cultures, open doors, change people's lives, and leave a lasting impact.

40 Lessons in 40 Years

#1 Support Others

Over the last 40 years, I have learned many things. Experienced many adventures and met many people. When I think back on the years, I realize that the biggest lesson I have learned is to support others. Many times in my life others have supported me. There were a few times I accomplished something and no one was there. Sometimes a birthday went by and only my mom and dad said Happy Birthday. Several years I lived in small towns and my only focus was on work. While I had many acquaintances, real friends were nowhere to be found. Then there were people over the years that have became my biggest cheerleaders, supporters and friends. These are the people that celebrate and support me. In turn I support them.

This year I turned 40 and I spent the month of July reflecting on my lessons over the year. I asked my tribe to support me in my goals for the year. To raise $10,000 for the Leukemia Society, to rock at Valley Leadership and in Suns 88. Always up for a challenge and ready to support me, they showed up BIG TIME!

In turn I asked them about the goals they have for themselves so I can support them. They have amazing goals for this year! Check them out!

Family & Friends:

Last month, I turned 40, ugg. This was not something I was looking forward to. There are so many things in my life that I am grateful for, proud of, learned from and experienced. Last year, I created my vision board for the year and included some amazing things that would make my 40^th year exciting. The best experiences I have learned take time to prepare for and accomplish. In my 40^th year, I have big plans. I am pleased to announce them with this post!

New family member adventures

Many of you know, last October I became a Foster parent to Tabatha a 16 year old girl. She has settled in nicely and is adored by Reagan the stray dog I took in years ago. This year is her final year in high school and she has her sights set on College. We will tour the state of Arizona this fall picking out the perfect school!

New Adventures

My sites were set on Valley Leadership Class #38 and the Phoenix Suns Charities 88. I am pleased to announce my selection for both! Each year, approximately 50 class members are selected for the nine-month program, and the 2016-17 class of the Leadership Institute marks the 38th year of the program. Valley Leadership curates each Leadership Institute cohort through a robust selection and matching process that builds a diverse group primed to deepen their passions and advance their pursuits…together. I could not be more excited to learn and grow with this program.

Next, Suns Charities 88, presented by Wells Fargo, was created in 2012 to offer a platform for energized business professionals across the Phoenix Metroplex to network amongst their peers. This powerful group comprised of 88 professionals, work collectively to give back to our community through the philanthropic power of the Phoenix Suns Charities. The combined efforts of Suns Charities 88’s members creates a forum for networking, personal development, philanthropic and fundraising opportunities that simultaneously creates a community minded, connected workforce across the Valley. Another exciting opportunity to learn, grow and make an impact!

New Career

Many of you know 16 years ago July 8^th, my world was crushed. My brother had been battling Leukemia since November of 1999. He was young only 20, healthy and ready for a fight. Things seemed to be going well, then rocky. He had two bone marrow transplants and the second was successful. He was told he could be going home soon. Then everything changed... When I got the call that literally had me on my knees screaming. It's a call that I know my mom will never forget making and I will never forget receiving. My brother had lost his battle with Leukemia due to complications with the treatment. Years later, just weeks ago, my dear friend Brandi was diagnosed with Leukemia. I am sick and tired of people I know getting Blood Cancer, it has to stop. We must find a cure!

I am not one to sit around and do nothing, so for 16 years I have been trying to do as much as I can to stand up to Leukemia and find a cure. I won’t stop until we find a cure! I have taken the biggest step this year and changed careers! The opportunity came about just before Brandi was diagnosed, divine intervention maybe? I am pleased to announce, I joined the staff at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as the Director of Operations for the Arizona, Utah, Southern Nevada and New Mexico Chapters. My new position has proven to be challenging, rewarding and fulfilling. Taking action is the only way I know how to help and cope. Celebrating & Embracing 40!

For my 40^th I celebrated in Vegas with my bff Josh, then my Junior League Ladies hosted a brunch for me and I splurged on new headshots. 40’s not so bad! I am a firm believer that if you put goals to paper they are achieved! My 40^th year will be a year of crushing goals!

First Person: Leadership Reflection

When I reflect on my Junior League leadership experiences since joining in 2004, three words come to mind: Passion, Purpose and Vision. It has truly been a pleasure to serve as a leader to many of the committees, projects, councils (now teams) and serve on the board in two leagues.

One experience stands out the most, serving as the Junior League of Phoenix Foundation President for my third term. When I first served on the foundation it was a part of my role as VP Development. Why does that matter? Well it matters because I was not aware when I took the role that was part of the “job”. I was initially not excited about this additional responsibility and did not know much about the Foundation. In my first year, I developed a PASSION for the Foundation. I am passionate about the foundation because it truly can drive the mission of the Junior League of Phoenix by providing much needed financial resources.

Passion: a strong feeling, irresistible motive for a belief or action. I learned early on from my JLP experience that there are many things out there we can do. BUT, there truly are many people to do them. If it is something that I am not truly passionate about it does not go on my list of activities. Think about it, if you don’t have the PASSION for something then when something needs to be done on a Friday night you won’t do it. Find a few things you’re IRRESISTIBLY PASSIONATE about and pour all your time and energy into those things.

The leader sets the pace for the pack! Leading with passion truly speeds up the work of the pack. If a leader is checked out, using this as a resume builder, or not passionate about the cause the pack suffers. The passion is contagious. If you are lacking passion for something, or lost the IRRESISTIBLE PASSION! Move on or find it again!

Purpose: the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. There are numerous books about finding your purpose in life. All of which tie in with doing what you are passionate about. In the terms of the League, let’s look at the purpose for why we do things. As a leader of the Foundation, it’s important for me to have a clear understanding for the why and easily draw the line for those involved. We can raise lots of money, complete all our yearly goals and check off all the non-profit boxes but this begs the question WHY are we doing this? We are doing this because we believe in the Junior League and the impact we have made on the phoenix community. It’s not about the Facebook posts or the minutes… it’s about the community impact. All day every day!

Once you have passion and know the purpose THEN WHAT? Well you need to have a vision. Vision: a clear picture for the future for the organization or project with the power of anticipating that which will come to be and making it happen. This is where many leaders fail by leading following the status quo. I always think about Blockbuster Video. Why? As the world changed they were status quo. They maintained status quo as the red box moved into grocery stores and Netflix started shipping videos. Once they realized what was happening it was too late. As a leader moving the mission and purpose of the organization is essential.

Sometimes the vision is not clear, but a leader must have one. Good leaders can see past the day to day and into the future. Great leaders also know the small steps that it takes to achieve the grand vision. Think about it for a second. If you know you want to go to Asia in a boat and can see yourself there you have vision. But you don’t know anything about how boats run you will never achieve the vision. How does a leader meet the vision? They get people excited and surround themselves with people who have the skills they do not. Then learn from them.

Things to Remember!
1) Find your passion! Do only things your passionate about!
2) Lead with Passion
3) Know your Organization's Purpose
4) Move the mission and purpose forward with a vision!
5) Surround yourself with people who have the skills you do not; learn from them!

Overall my experience as the President of the Foundation has taught me how to bepassionate, know the purpose and have a clear vision. Leadership is challenging and ever changing (remember Blockbuster). Things change daily. But my leadership style has evolved over time. I am proud to lead a great organization and proud of the accomplishments the Foundation board has achieved!

16 years ago July 8th, my world was crushed. My brother had been battling Leukemia since November of 1999. The doctors told us it would be a long battle and we should continue with our life plans. He was young only 20, healthy and ready for a fight. Things seemed to be going well, then rocky. He had two bone marrow transplants and the second was successful. He was told he could be going home soon. The last time he went home he said he could not stop looking at the trees and how beautiful things were.

Then everything changed... When I got the call that literally had me on my knees screaming. It's a call that I know my mom will never forget making and I will never forget receiving. My brother had lost his battle with Leukemia due to complications with the treatment. That day also happened to be my dad's birthday, a day supposed to be for celebration. However, it will never be a day of celebration again.

When people lose a sibling my heart aches for them. I wish I could tell them that things get better over time, but it just does not. In reality it's just different. He was the person I called when I was annoyed with my parents (sorry Beverly Bradfield Mayer and Gerald Mayer), he was the one that I listened to Piano Man to on repeat for about 6 hours straight, he was the one that made me laugh with his crazy hours of video taping (all in selfie mode, he would have loved the selfie) and he was my best friend.

Years later, just weeks ago, my dear friend Brandi was diagnosed with Leukemia. I had yet another call I will never forget. I was completely shocked, we just ran a 10K and ½ marathon together, and she is active and healthy. I never would have thought this could happen. She will have a very different treatment plan (thank God), however this plan involves 3 years of chemo.
I am sick and tired of people I know getting Blood Cancer, it has to stop. We must find a cure!

6) Patients need your support and encouragement during treatment – share your encouraging thoughts and prayers with them.

I am Goofy

I am officially Goofy....

About 9 months ago, I signed up for Goofy. What is Goofy? It's a half marathon (13.1 miles) on Saturday followed by a full marathon (26.2 miles) on Sunday. Many people have asked me why would anyone want to do that, followed by how did you do that? Well I will tell you, honestly, it's the challenge and the medals. It's honestly crazy what the body can do when pushed and what people will do for a medal! It's not the physical medal, it's what the medal stands for. The medal is a symbol of accomplishment. Goofy was the ultimate challenge, 39.3 miles in a weekend. So how did it go?

Amazingly it went well. I arrived in Florida and I was picked up by Mom, my uncle Bill and Bonnie. I proceeded to head to the pool to relax before a big weekend.

Day 2, The Expo for packet pick up and then Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios. I have been to both parks before, however it is always cool to experience the park with someone new. Especially the Harry Potter park. The detail was amazing and lots of cool things to see and do.

Day 3, Epcot! Another tried and true park that I have visited often. In Japan, I was fortunate enough to pick two 7.5 + pearls out of two oysters, it was very cool. I had them set into a pendant. My favorite part of Epcot is by far the evening show, but I had to leave to prepare for the race challenge.

2:00 am wake up call...enough said. I got ready in record time and headed to the Disney bus. Once I arrived at the staging area. It honestly felt like home, I have done this event before, but I was welcomed by my first Team in Training team from South Brevard. It is amazing to see so many warm and friendly faces. It was just like I had never left. After a quick stretch we started the march to the start. The plan for Donald's 13.1 miles, take it slow and have fun. I did just that... I stopped for every character and took lots of photos. It was fun to see familiar faces on the course and really enjoy just running. 3 hours and 30 minutes later I was finished. Post race recovery... ice bath and a dip in the cold pool. Then back to the Expo for some last minute shopping

Full Marathon Day 26.2 - Mickey's Race =39.3 total and Goofy's Challenge
2:00 wake up call again.. A little sore, a little nervous. 26.2 miles is a long way and the distance is always intimidating. The effects on the body are always tough, it sucks and is a long way. Starting the day off sore is not a good way to begin and adding the fact that I was tired could make for a very long day. My friend Lisa from many seasons ago was also doing Goofy. She typically runs alone, and I was prepared for her to leave me or vice versa. However 26.2 is a long way, an even longer way if you are alone. Our goal, run and walk as long as we can together.

The start was slow, muscles were tight and anxiety was high but all was good. Until mile 9, wow mile 9 is early to hit a wall. But I felt it. Total miles 22. Just keep running when the watch beeps was the goal, anyone can do anything for 3 minutes. After 9 the mile markers seemed to come quickly. Around Mile 16 we switched to 2 minute runs and 2 minute walks. It was hot... we checked into a graveyard. Next thing we knew mile 18 sign then we were greeted by the candlestick at mile 20. Only 6 more miles and we were still run walking. Honestly it was the biofreeze that kept us going. We stopped at every medical tent.

Miles 20-26 were tough, but we made it. We just kept moving, running and walking when the watch beeped. Crossing the finish line before the cut off was amazing. Running 26.2 miles with a friend start to finish was amazing.

Post Race
Ice bath... pool.... eat.... sleep.... repeat. I spent the night with my mom at Downtown Disney we had a nice meal. Then the next morning... ice bath... pool then my flight. The next day I was stiff but I could walk.

The body is amazing but it's the mind that proves to be the most amazing. It goes to show you what you can do with a positive attitude and the support of a friend.

2012 Theme for the Year

The year 2011 has been filled with many exciting adventures! A trip to Paris with my best friend Josh Lodolo and my Team in Training team was outstanding. We toured many of the amazing sites of Paris drank lots of wine and talked about life plans. I made great progress with my dissertation and had the IRB approve my research. At work I was promoted and charged with managing a large team. I continue to work with Alpha Phi at ASU and alumnae chapters in the Southwest Region. The VP of Development position year two for the Junior League has been extremely busy and rewarding. I traveled to Napa with Annette and some other great people for the Ragnar Relay. I showed Scoobie at the March show and helped Cindy with Jet. Life has been good.

2011 has also brought about many challenges in life and as I look into 2012 I am very thankful for the friendships I have formed that have supported me through the challenges. When times get tough, the people who care about you the most are sometimes the people you did not expect. God continues to provide challenge and through those challenges the most surprising things happen. Also the best life lessons take place.

What is in store for 2012? Well first, a focus on my health and training. Coaching on the PF Chang's marathon course. Then running the Tinkerbell 1/2 Marathon in DisneyLand in Jan. Rummage sale for the Junior League in February and closing out the year with a bang. Then finally finishing up my dissertation.

As many of you know, I don't set resolutions... I set themes. This year my theme is "Creating a Quality Life". My inspiration a few quotes.

“Quality questions create a quality life. Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.”
“Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”

I have spent a lot of time asking myself quality questions. Where do I want to be? Who do I want to be in life? What legacy do I want to leave? How can I best maximize my time and talents?

I plan on having some quality time in the gym training, some quality time with God, and much quality time producing my dissertation. Most importantly, I am going to focus on quality time with my friends and family. It is the effort that I put in focusing on these things that will enhance my life and the lives of others.

I am looking forward to creating a quality life as a result of my intention, effort, direction, and execution. Here is to a great 2012.

A Year Older... Does that Mean Wiser?

2011 is the year of travel, the theme of the year "It is better to travel then to arrive"! In my year of travel, I have explored many areas of my life, with much more to come. As I reflect on becoming one year older, I think about if I have arrived? Have I reached my final destination in any part of my life? Am I any wiser than I was last year? Yes, I have arrived to a new place in my life... a place where I realize that I have much more traveling to do. I am not sure anyone every fully arrives. You arrive at a place, only to realize you have much more traveling to do. Much more to explore. Just when you think you arrived, you realize you have not.

As a coach for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program, I watched my team finish the PF Chang's Marathon, the San Diego Marathon as well as the Paris, France Marathon.
I traveled physically with by best friend Josh to Paris, France this year to compete in the Marathon with my team. Exploring a new culture, land and group of people always has been a journey. While trip was memorable, filled with great sights and good times, the best part of the trip was the personal journey I took. I helped me focus on what is important in life.

I was fortunate to be promoted at work. I have explored new ways of managing and leading a group of people. I have also been challenged to develop new protocol and operating procedures. I am challenged on a daily basis. I have not had this challenge in years, and I truly enjoy the challenge.

In my volunteer role as the Development VP (for the second year) for the Junior League of Phoenix, I have worked with a very talented group of women to create the future of fundraising for the league. We have rolled out the first stage of the plan. I am proud of the work we are doing, we are traveling to a new place for the league.

Traveling in 2011 has just begun, with much more to come. I hope to achieve personal milestones, and truly experience all life had to offer.

New Year 2011

Every year I set a Theme, I don't do resolutions because well everyone forgets them and who needs disappointment right? My 2010 theme was "Achieving the terminal degree", I am very pleased to report that I made much progress in this area. I was able to accomplish many milestones in this area. As I think back on the year, I realize how much changes in one year. I can't believe how much my life has changed in 12 months. Time goes by so quickly and change is abundant. 2010 was a great year, I am proud of many things, had some fun and now ready to put this one behind me. YEAH 2010, now on to 2011!

What is in store for 2011? Who can predict?

2011Who?In my life there have been many people that have come and gone, they have left their mark (some good, some bad). When I think over the years I wonder, who will be around in 2011? Who will I meet in 2011 that I did not know in 2010? Who will leave a lasting impact? 2011 What? What will I do in 2011? Will I be doing the same thing for work? Will I explore more countries abroad? Will I finish my degree (finally)? Will I purchase my own home? What volunteer positions await me? What will I be doing in 2011? 2011 When? When will I do all this? When will I find the time? When will I discover my true purpose? 2011 Where? Where will I end up in 2011? Job wise, volunteer wise, physically, spiritually, and emotionally? 2011 Why? Why will I do the things I do in 2011, what will those things accomplish? Why am I asking so many questions? 2011 How? How am I going to make 2011 the best year? How am I going to figure out what 2011 is going to be for me? How am I going to celebrate 2011?

Since it is better to travel then arrive, I am going to travel for 2011. I am going to take the journey of life. I am going to let things happen, and experience it. All of it. I am going to have some fun, do some work, explore life and be happy. Most of all I am going to travel and enjoy 2011.

2009 Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays! 2010 was much better than 2009. 2010 proved to be a very busy year, full of accomplishment, adventure and fun!

In my quest to cure blood cancer, I rode 100 miles on a bike around Lake Tahoe. It was a beautiful ride full of hills! Then I returned to Dublin, Ireland for another marathon! I also have taken on two new roles with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I am coaching the PF Chang’s & Paris Season participants. I am also serving as the Chair of the volunteer TNT committee. In February of last year, I ran 202 miles in the Ragnar Relay with an amazing group of people from an organization called Girls on the Run. This organization helps girls with self-esteem and their final goal is to run a 5k. A truly rewarding experience!

My mom visited Arizona twice, in May and for Thanksgiving. It was great to see her and show her around. As well as see my family.

On July 4th, my friend Cindy Bruce had a baby Gavin. We have spent all summer and fall teaching him how to be a barn brat. He has even attended his first horse show. He is the first kid that actually let’s me hold him without crying.

I advised the ASU chapter of Alpha Phi this year and they put on an outstanding Gala raising $48,000 for the Alpha Phi Foundation!

In late July, I was moved from Vice President of Development Elect for the Junior League of Phoenix to the Vice President role. I now have four committees and wonderful women to work with. I am looking forward to doing this role again next year!

Throughout the year, I have been showing horses and riding frequently. I have been showing Scooby, Cindy’s saddlebred hunter. We won the championship at big show in March and we were reserve champion at two other shows this year. I also showed a Friesian name Cete and we won both the qualifier and championship at the show in March.

Finally, to Easton! He is doing great, he really is growing up. He no longer chases the horses, he listens (most of the time), and he still loves everybody. Cindy has deemed him Dennis the Menace for some annoying antics but he is a great dog loving life for the most part.

Familiar Places... warm feelings....fond memories...

As I prepare to depart for Dublin, Ireland, I have been thinking about the feeling that I get when I return to places that mean something to me. Places where I have fond memories, warm feeling and have meet some great people. There are many places that bring back those feelings..

First and foremost, Ireland. It was 2002 the last time I was there. I joined a group of Student Affairs professionals and students to venture out and explore the country as well as study the universities. We came as strangers; left connected, bonded and friends. I could go on for pages about the times we shared.. but let's just say it was worth every minute. We got lost in a thunderstorm and stuck on the train, explored where real people live, got rained on daily, shared a beer or two, or three, and much much more. Jason, Julie and Brooks our time in Ireland was a true experience one I will cherish for my lifetime. I am excited to go back to that familiar place to do what I love to do, run marathons! Wish you were going to be there, it will not be the same without you.

Once I get there, I know I will feel that warm feeling, like returning to a place filled with memories... can't wait!

Leaving a Legacy

Every two years, Alpha Phi’s from all across the country gather for convention, typically in a hot climate at a fancy resort. This year the Phi’s flocked to humid, Miami Florida and stayed at the Doral Resort and Spa. While this may seem like a luxurious trip, I assure you we did not spend time at the Spa, downtown Miami, nor the pool.

We had more important things to tend to… We have women to empower, lessons to be learned, money to raise, and a wonderful sisterhood to celebrate. We are a progressive group of women who change as the world changes.

While in Miami, we re-connected with our past. Our beautiful history display reminded us that our founding members were strong women that were passionate about the women’s movement. Alpha Phi was left to us to guard and protect, to ensure that women had the same opportunity that they created for us. We had the privilege of watching former International President Phyllis Sims Seig (Gamma Delta-Kansas), 1974-78 preform the initiation ceremony by memory.

While our founder’s may not have been able to envision the Alpha Phi of today, I think they would be proud as we revealed that we raised over $10 million for the Alpha Phi Foundation for leadership. They would have loved Martha Mast dancing with her dance partner in Alpha Phi’s version of Dancing with the Stars.

Convention is always awe inspiring and empowering. The women of Alpha Phi are strong, empowering, and an inspiration. I am proud to be an Alpha Phi, and I know that when we leave the fraternity to the current young member they will do us proud.

Wow... I am turning 34 this weekend. I can't believe that I am 34. When I was younger, I remember my cousins turning 25, 30 and 35. I always thought when I turned 34 I would be different. I guess I thought I would have it all figured out, know what I want in life and exactly what I want to do with my life. I am not sure why I thought this would be the case, but I did. I don't feel I have it all figured out but in keeping with Oprah's idea this is WHAT I KNOW FOR SURE...

Relationships with people are complicated, ever changing and rewarding.

You can pour all your time and effort into work, but that will not fill you up emotionally.

When you give back, you in turn learn more about yourself.

Everything is possible, no really, everything is possible.... and my fav quote "Those that say it cannot be done should not interrupt those doing it"
I am a strong introvert but outgoing when needed
Animals bring peace and harmony in life
The US has some complicated laws, policies and practices... sometimes it seems things in other countries are simple...

Tahoe 100 Bike Ride Life Changing

“The one upside to a potentially life-threatening condition is that it makes you really want to live.”

On June 6th, I biked 100 miles in Lake Tahoe for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This season I raised over $3,300 for blood cancer. My total is now over $28,000 since 2004.

Our Honored Heroes

Each year I say I am going to take a break and then I talk to someone who is battling blood cancer.

This season it was baby Violette, she was diagnosed when she was one week old and lost her battle at the age of 44 days. She died in her father’s arms.

I had the privilege of riding with our honored hero Jarrett who was diagnosed in 2007 and is now cancer free. This weekend his two adopted boys were at the event and I kept thinking that if he did not get treatment, he could not be there for those two boys. I taught them to cheer for their dad “faster daddy faster”, I am not sure he appreciated that too much but it was adorable. Here is Jarrett’s story:

“*JARRETT HASKOVEC –Honored Teammate*

Around Christmas of 2006, Jarrett began feeling a general exhaustion he couldn’t account for and no amount of sleep seemed to help. At about the same time, a mass began to develop under his right arm and grow in size. In February, Jarrett visited his doctor due to these persistent symptoms. At first the doctors tested for mono but they were uncertain as to why he felt as he did.

The mass under his arm continued to grow in size and began to visibly develop near his collarbone. He was referred to a surgeon who immediately operated to remove the mass. On April 20th, 2007, the results of the biopsy showed positive for Hodgkin’s disease.

After the initial shock and difficulty hearing the diagnosis, Jarrett and his wife resolved to stay optimistic, to fight this cancer, and most importantly continue on with life. Jarrett began treatment at the Mayo Clinic where further tests revealed a rare composite of Stage 3 Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

By the end of September 2007, Jarrett’s chemotherapy was a success, and he is now in complete remission.

Jarrett and his wife are committed to seizing every day. Nowadays, he is doing more hiking, biking, and reading, and in April 2008, less than six months after he was determined to be in full remission, he hiked across most of the Grand Canyon. In June 2010, he will complete his first century ride through the LLS’s Team in Training program. He sums it up well with this: ‘The one upside to a potentially life-threatening condition is that it makes you really want to live.’”

I have been blessed to be able to raise money and participate in events with Team in Training. Lake Tahoe was beautiful. The ride was difficult, but nothing compared to what the patients endure everyday. I rode with a team, but rode the 100 miles with Becky. We started at the hotel with an elevation of 6273’ and traveled to our first of two major hills, Inspiration point at an elevation of 6828’. This climb was full of switchbacks and very challenging. But the work was worth the reward, the downhill was AMAZING! We arrived at Emerald Bay at mile 14 and the view was incredible.

Mile 18-50 was pretty flat with a trek off the lake to Truckee. Becky and I opted to take the bike path out to Truckee and enjoyed the river and snow piles. At Truckee we stopped briefly and then headed back to the lake. The ride back was HORRIBLE, with a strong headwind. We tried it on our own, neither of us wanted to lead. Then we tried to follow a large group of people in a pace line, but they were really slow. Then Becky tried to pass them and did not like leading in that wind. We were doing about 7 miles an hour into the wind and we were miserable. The only plus side to our ride back to the lake from Truckee was seeing the Olympic flame. That was worth it. Then Becky got this bright idea to take the bike path back. Instantly we were back at 15 miles an hour!

Then at mile 64 there was a small hill called dollar hill. That was a little challenge but not bad. Then we arrived at King’s Beach for lunch. We dumped our bikes, enjoyed a sandwich and then headed out with Jarrett, Joe, John, Jamie and Russ. The boys quickly lost us up the Crystal Bay hill (right after lunch hills are NO FUN). Then off to Incline Village, not really hilly as the name indicated.

Incline Village was very challenging for me from miles 75-82. Large houses, lots to look at but mentally I was spent. I had to dig deep, remember my brother and ask for help to get me back on track. As well as some help from Russ’s wife with some much needed supplies.

Then at mile 81 was the beginning of the 7+ mile hill Spooner! From an elevation of 6324’ to 7100’. Spooner was not really that bad, just a bad place in the ride. Sometimes when you ask for inspiration you get it. It was about ½ way up Spooner that I met a survivor that had just finished her chemo last Monday. She was asked if she wanted to ride in a van up Spooner, SHE REFUSED. She said that if chemo did not beat her, Spooner would not. So she walked her bike up Spooner. One step at a time.

After Spooner the down hill rocked, but we have a strong cross wind that almost knocked me off my bike. We got to the finish line of 100 miles! Receiving my triple crown was a major accomplishment in my life, but nothing compared to the feeling I get knowing that I am helping save lives. But honestly, it would be better to have my brother here to ride with. I wish he could have been there. I sometimes wonder what we would have been like growing up as adults together, I wonder if we would ride together. There are many events where I feel him with me. This time was no different.

We are not blessed to have; We are blessed to give.

With a very heavy heart, I share that our little Warrior Princess lost her battle with Leukemia today. RIP, Violette Ruby Kotter Dehoux. 6/3/10 3:30pm 44 days old.

As many of you know I have been involved with Team In Training for many years. Every year I say I am going to take a break, then I meet someone that is fighting blood cancer and I am compelled to do something. This year I have been inspired by two little one's Baby Dylon and Baby Violette. Both babies were diagnosed as infants. Violette at one week of age. I can't believe in the happiest time of people's lives they are faced with a child that has blood cancer. It breaks my heart.

This season I am doing a century ride, 100 miles on a bike in Tahoe. I am a mission captain to a group of about 18 riders and they truly have inspired me. The are so passionate about fundraising, riding and beating blood cancer. My team in training team will ride 100 miles in Tahoe for Violette, Dylon, Ron, Kelly, Jarrett, Michael, Cindy and all other blood cancer patients on Sunday. I will earn my triple crown for TNT (finishing 3 different endurance events with TNT), BUT with all the joy that comes with completing this... we have still not found a cure for blood cancer.

I know that with each and every day we are closer to finding a cure. I hope that in my lifetime a cure will be found and all those that have lost their lives to blood cancer will know that their fight was not in vein.

Choosing a Forgiving and Merciful Attitude

Tonight I had the privilege of hearing Joyce Meyer http://www.joycemeyer.org/ speak about attitude and choosing to have a forgiving and merciful attitude. She asked several thought provoking questions. Who are you mad at? Why can’t you forgive them? And finally, what would Jesus do? We all know Jesus would forgive and show mercy.

I think sometimes it is easy to say we forgive someone, but in reality it is a lot harder to actually do it than say it. Tonight Joyce said to “stop waiting to fell like it… decide to do it! Jesus did not feel like going to the cross, he decided to do it!”

Many times I have heard, you choose your attitude. People choose to be humble and handle problems with grace. Joyce said that you can choose to have a forgiving and merciful attitude. Sometimes easier said than done. This is something that I am working on every day. I tend to have loud faults, vs. silent faults. I do things boldly sometimes I regret those things, other times I find that I accomplish feats I never knew possible with my loud bold actions. However, I find that I struggle with being forgiving and merciful when mistakes are made or I get bad news. Many times I don’t forgive myself. Joyce said tonight “It is unnatural to be forgiving and merciful, but totally godly”.

I tend to be very analytical, to find problems so that I can work towards change. I tend to expect the worst but hope for the best. I am going to take Joyce’s advice and work on my attitude for the next 30 days. I am going to expect the best of everything. I am going to expect that Gold will do something great in my life everyday. Even if it is just the little things and I am going to BE MY BEST. I am going to choose my attitude and be forgiving and merciful towards myself and others.

Life Moments

There are moments in your life that make you and set the course of who your going to be. Sometimes they’re little, subtle moments. Sometimes, they’re big moments you never saw coming. No one asks for their life to change, but it does. It’s what you do afterwards that counts. That’s when you find out who you are. ~ Unknown

In 33 years there are a few significant moments where my life has changed. I truly believe that those moments have shapped the woman I am today. Those are the times when I have had to reach deep down inside myself to really figure out how to respond. I have learned a great deal about my strength because of these life moments.

Moments of change and significance in my life:

1) My 1st grade field trip to a barn- this is when I started riding horses

2) My first lesson at Bridleway Stables where I met Marcia Everett, may other great people and found my future career path

3) My first real boyfriend, Mike Corson in 1990

4) Going to College in 1995 at William Woods University

5) My initiation into Alpha Phi Fraternity April 15th 1995

6) When I won the Amature Roadster Under Saddle class at the World Championship Horse Show in 1998

7) My decison to get out of the horse business and go back to school for my masters

8) My brothers death in June 2000

9) My divorce in Feb 2002

10) Trip to Ireland in 2002

11) Crossing the finish line at the Disney 1/2 Marathon in 2005 with Team in Training

12) Joining the Junior League in 2004

13) Trip to South Africa in 2007

14) Completing the comprehensive exams for the PhD program in Jan of 2008

Each and every event has changed me in some way. I remember being a very shy young girl. But I know that my experience with horses and Alpha Phi have provided with the confidence to be who I am today. As I reflect on each and every moment, what I realize is that even the "bad" moments I have gained so much. Maybe those are the experiences that I have grown the most. I don't regret those experiences because they have allowed me to grow so much.

As I turn the page in 2010, I look forward to all life holds for me. I hope I can learn as much about myself as I have in all those years in the past. Here is to finishing up my PhD and all that life holds in 2010.

After eight seasons, I am still awe struck and filled with emotion when I cross the finish line. I can’t believe how powerful the Team in Training experience is. Just knowing that I am running for people that are going through Chemo, bone marrow transplants and pure hell just to live keeps me going as I run. I wish that I could say this was my last run for Team In Training, because we found a cure, but it is not. I wish that I could look in all the kids eyes and say don’t worry the fight is over, but it is not.

This season was particularly emotional for me, because I lost my dad. I dedicated this race to him, wish he could have been there. He was, just from up above. I know I made him proud. He always wished he could do something for my brother Mike and you made that possible for him! Many people donated in his memory, and my family appreciates your support greatly.

I also had an amazing group of people on the team this season. I must say, I think we did a fine job representing the Desert Mountain states. As we say here “Some like it hot, we like it hotter!” I will not forget all the wonderful people that I ran with this season, you rock!

Since 2000 I have raised over $25,000! Amazing how fast that adds up. I could not do this without the help of all the donors, thanks for all your generous donations! You are helping us find a cure! We will find one!

The Night Before A Marathon with Team In Training

WOW, do you beleive this is my eighth marathon with Team In Training? Raised over $25,000 since 2000. However, I wish I was sitting here typing that a cure was found and people will no longer need to suffer with blood cancer. Wouldn't that be nice? But our work is not finished, so we press on.

On my first event, Disney in 2005, I started some traditions that have continued before each run. The night before, I am always excited and do a few things. Especially when I know I am going to run an event with someone who has never gone the distance (26.2 miles). I love to watch the newbies cross the finish line for the first time. The night before, I write in my journal typically about the training, laughs and people along the way.

Then I write out a note to my brother that I carry with me on the race. Something to remind me why I am pushing my body to the limits.

I listen to my coaches, so I put out my race gear the night before. Then I double check everything.

The last thing I do I take a bath to relax my mind and body. This is when I go over the race and my strategy.

I can't describe how it feels to complete the distance and finish. It is the most powerful feeling I have felt. But knowing that my brother is watching and will push me if I need it, makes the experience so rewarding. Now I will have both my dad and brother to make proud. I wish they could be at the event, but I know I will feel them every step of the way. I miss them both, can't believe they are gone.
