<itunes:summary>Mary Anne Mohanraj joins us in our third Clarion special show to discuss MFA work, writing grants, how to write the Other, Strange Horizons, and more. Then we present the first Publishing Key in our contest, and Tobias S. Buckell addresses POV in Ask a Writer.

Show Notes

I start this episode off by reading an article concerning the latest ploy by Amazon.com to wrestle rights and profits away from publishers and writers. I am deeply concerned by a series of events committed by Amazon, each depicting a steady move toward monopolizing the book world. I'm concerned enough that I'm considering eliminating this podcast's association with them. What are your thoughts on the matter? I could use some feedback, and a healthy conversation would go a long way.

Mary Anne Mohanraj joins us from the Clarion Workshop. She and I discuss her background, her Clarion West experiences, grant money for writers, writing the Other, her current work, problems with the writing of inexperienced writers, Strange Horizons, and more.

Then Tobias Buckell presents the First Publishing Key in our summer contest, sponsored by Tor and Pyr SF. Toby also brings us another segment of Ask a Writer, this time addressing Jonathan's question about POV.

We'll see you next week with Neil Gaiman!

Show Notes:

Sam and I start things off with some Publishing News: Con Talk! That's right, we engage in a few minutes of geeky goodness about those strange and often wonderful gatherings called science fiction conventions. Top on our radar is Comic-Con, at which both of us will loose four days of our life and another four days to recover. Many interviews are being planned, so we have some nice content to share with you from the Con. I will be a guest at Conjecture 6 in September, but what if you don't live in San Diego? Where are the cons near you? Thank you, Locus.

Inbsp;met with James Patrick Kellynbsp;at his hotel and had a lovely time chatting about workshops, podcasting, writing, the Scifi Channel, and a variety of subjects. Enjoy.

Then, Out of the Slush comes Matthew Wayne Selznick to discuss his book deal for Brave Men Run.

Finally, Sam and Inbsp;wrap things up by pondering the theme of this episode: podcasting your fiction. Is it different from traditional self-publishing? Should authors do it? What factors go into making it a success?

We'll be back next week with our third Clarion interview: Mary Anne Mohanraj.</itunes:summary>

Show Notes

We start this show with Publishing News: Tobias Buckell has been selected to write the next Halo novel for the bestselling series. This spawns Shaun and Sam to discuss media tie-ins. And who wrote those other novels in the Halo series: The Flood, First Strike, The Fall of Reach, and Ghosts of Onyx, all by Eric Nylund, and Contact Harvest, by Joseph Staten.

We are very pleased to bring you weekly episodes for the rest of the year, and we start off with our special Clarion Series, where we go behind the scenes of the Clarion Workshop. Kelly Link joins us to talk about the program, low-residency MFA programs, writing short stories, Creative Commons, and her new story collection, Pretty Monsters. Also, Lou Anders examines the purpose of cover art. Is it meant to accurately portray the book? Should SF books be laden in iconic SF imagery, or is Photoshop the way to go?

Lastly, no feedback this time, and we have some fun with it. Don't forget to get in on the Keys to Publishing contest, coming soon.

Show Notes:

Sam is back! She tells us about her adventures at Book Expo America, and, yes, I am green with envy that I could not attend. Maybe next year. We also reveal the Keys to Publishing Contest, which will run on both this podcast and on I Should be Writing. Professional writers like Tobias Buckell, Jay Lake, David Louise Edelman, Kay Kenyon and more will be sharing the vital truths you need to know to make it as a professional writer. Listen throughout the summer, write down the titles of each key, and you could win prize packs from Tor Books and Pyr SF. Mur and I are thrilled about this contest, and we look forward to some listeners getting some really cool free books.

Interview: Marie Brennan discuss Midnight Never Come, role playing games, studying fandom at a University, traveling to London, Shakespeare, politics, and more.

Out of the Slush: Patrice Sarath talks about her first book deal with Ace and the process it took her to get there.

Feedback: Christian talks about Borders and BN; Barry wants more depth from Out of the Slush; Bryan loves the show, but wishes there were more of them.

We'll be back next time with our first Clarion episode featuring Kelly Link. We will have weekly episodes for the rest of Season 2, so get ready for some great stuff with great authors.

Show Notes:

Publishing News: President Bush proposes to cut funding for Reading is Fundamental.

Bonus News Story: Thanks to Autumn for this book review!

Science fiction can be an almost overwhelming pocket of reading. Hundreds of writers creating thousands of worlds for us to immerse ourselves in is a wonderful thing, to be sure, but some of us occasionally find ourselves in need of a guide. Since I don't have the spending cash to have my own personal anthology editor on staff, I use the Nebula series as my resource instead. The index to volume eight sounds like a perfect writers' roundtable ndash; Arthur C. Clark, Frederik Pohl, Harlan Ellison, gene Wolfe, Robert Silverberg and Poul Anderson, all edited by Isaac Asimov.

Each year, after the Nebula Awards are announced, a volume is created featuring both winners and nominees. That alone would make these worthwhile collections, but they are enhanced with essays about the year in film, memoriae for those authors who have died and introductions and essays by an always-fantastic editor. They also feature something I didn't even know existed until I picked up these books ndash; the Rhysling poetry awards, which may be the ultimate in literary geek culture.

I read all the way through the 70s, 80s and 90s over the last few months, and it was a treasure trove. Isaac Asimov, the grandfather of this corner of the cosmos, edited the series for years, and his introductions are just as good as they stories they preface. Other editors include James Morrow, Michael Bishop, Pamela Sargent, George Zebroski and Marta Randall, each one a leader in their field.

For every year that I read, I not only enjoyed the works by writers that I already liked, but I also ended up with a list of authors that I had never heard of or that I wanted to know more about. Specifically, I was surprised by how many authors who I had thought of as being traditional novelists had a secret stash of phenomenal short fiction; especially welcome to those of us who have to cram our reading in wherever we can find the time.

These books are a wonderful addition to the reading list of any sci-fi fan ndash; short form or long, new reader or old, no one will walk away from these books without at least a few stories making an impression.

- Interview with Cory Doctorow

- Shaun explains the unique circumstances behind interviewing Cory.
- Out of the Slush debuts with Greg Van Eekhout. Is that a cool bumper, or what? Greg is pretty cool, too.

- Feedback about Borders and Barnes and Noble.

That's it for this episode. Don't forget to enter the Kay Kenyon book contest. If you like the show, please tell a friend, write a blog about us, or write a review in iTunes.

This episode is brought to you by Bright of the Sky, by Kay Kenyon. An AISFP recommended book!

Show Notes:
Publishing News: We discuss the impact of Arthur C. Clarke, who wrote SF classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Childhood's End. He will be missed and loved for a long time to come.

- Bonus Story: Lou Anders and I have been discussing whether or not there should be a Hugo Award for podcasts. Lou suggested that podcasts could be considered for best fan writer or best fanzine. Some podcasts would fit nicely into these categories: Dragon Page Cover to Cover, I Should be Writing, The Future and You, The Sciphi Show all come to mind. Escapepod is leading SF podcasting right now (and SF magazines in general), but as a "reprint" market for professional authors, it doesn't qualifies in the categories being discussed here. It certainly deserves some awards and recognition, so maybe a unique podcasting column is necessary.

I suppose podcasts can be ignored for another year or two, but as their popularity grows, they'll need to be included more in the field. Professional author and publishers are certainly benefiting from them enough to justify the inclusion. Take into account not just the countless interview opportunities for writers, but the pros who make podcasts themselves: Cory Doctorow, Jay Lake, Jon Armstrong, Tracy Hickman, Paul Levinson, Michael A. Stackpole, Mercedes Lackey, James Patrick Kelly. . .

- Interview with Timothy Zahn, live from Condor.
- Magazine Spotlight: Lone Star Stories.
- Listener emails. Plenty of music recommendations: Nick suggests the Solaris soundtrack by Cliff Martinez, and Ghosts by Nine Inch Nails. Kory suggests the opening music of Trigun and the songs of Jonathan Coulton. Emma likes the music from Sunshine. Jordan had a list for us that includes Coheed and Cambria, Julia Ecklar, Jonathan Coulton, and The Dresden Dolls. And Sam has suggestions for every category. For scifi, he suggests Vangelis ndash; Blade Runner and Eric Serra - The 5th Element. For Horror ndash; Popol Vuh ndash; Nosferatu and SourceCodeX ndash; Primordial Lands Arise. And for fantasy, he suggests Jeff and Mychael Danna ndash; A Celtic Tale.

If someone can tell me the artist and song that you hear when my cellphone goes off, I'll come up with something special for you. A free book or something. Just leave the artist and song title on the blog to win! There will be just one winner.

That's it for this week. Please tell a friend about us or write a blog about your favorite episode. We really appreciate the support. See you next month.

Show Notes:
- Is that the sweet sounds of Sam's sultry voice? I believe it is! I'm not trying to steal your intro, Tee. It just came out.
- Publishing News: Locus announces this year's inductees into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Baen now has ebooks available through ereads, founded by Richard Curtis.
- Bonus News Segment: Here's a bonus story for you listeners visiting the website. Every month we will be including extra content here on the website that will not be shared on the podcast. Today, my commentary on Wastelands, a new anthology about the end of the world.

Irsquo;ve had the pleasure of speaking with Jeremy Lassen of Night Shade Books several times. I even interviewed him for my podcast. So, I donrsquo;t mean this blog post as an insult to him, Joseph John Adams, or anyone else involved with the new anthology, Wastelands. But a mistake on the bookrsquo;s cover is something I must address, because itrsquo;s a mistake that I see (and hear) quite often.

From the back cover of Wastelands: "From the Book of Revelations to The Road Warriors; from A Canticle for Leibowitz to The Road, storytellers have long imagined the end of the world, weaving eschatological tales of catastrophe, chaos, and calamity."

Whatrsquo;s wrong with that sentence? Well, having just consulted my Bible just to make sure, the Book of Revelations doesn't exist. It never has, as far as I know, but I hear it said on television or see it referenced in books quite regularly.

But what about the final book of the Bible, you idiot! Oh, you mean Revelation. No "s". Given that the Bible is one of the most important documents in the history of western civilization (probably the most important), why are so many Americans clueless about what this famous book is called?

The Night Shade guys certainly arenrsquo;t the first to make this mistake. In the name of fairness, I'll call out one other respectable writer of note. J.C. Hutchins mentions the Book of Revelations in book 3 of 7th Son. I emailed him about it, and he electronically cringed. (Love you, Hutch!)

This mistake isn't the most egregious offense in the world, but it is inexcusable. "From the book of Revelations" is a popular clicheacute;, but eventually someone needs to crack open the Bible and see what the book is really called. This isn't a religious thing. It about historical accuracy, and knowing what we're talking about. I mean, if we donrsquo;t know what the book is called, do we have any right to refer to its contents?

That being said, Wastelands looks like a killer book! Irsquo;m all over it. I just won't read the back cover to keep from gagging.

- Interview with Tracy Hickman. Please check out Tracy's podcasts Dragonhearth and Killer Breakfast.
- Shaun and Sam discuss Wizards of the Coast and how authors (and fans) should be treated.
- Email from Jonathan regarding Terry Goodkind's interview. That's it for this week. Please tell a friend, blog about us, or write us a review in iTunes. We'll see you next week with a special episode.

Books Received:
We've had some great books come in lately, so I wanted to tell you all about them.

Selling Out, book two of the Quantum Gravity series, continues Justina Robson's spunky and fast paced series from Pyr. Book One was a fun romp with the feel of cyberpunk meets paranormal romance, but without those vampires and werewolves that permeate so many novels these days. Lila Black, the ultra-tough female cyborg that leads these novels, here delves into Demonia, and the journey promises to be harrowing.

I have yet to read Joel Shepherd, so I'm going to quote the back of Killswitch: "Two years after the unhatching of Callayan President Neiland's plot to make the capital city of Tanusha the center of the Federations, Callay is under seige. So begins the third installment of this gripping trilogy from an exciting new sci-fi author."

I have been wanted to read the Cassandra Kresnov novels since I first discovered them. The covers are amazing, and they captured my imagination immediatlely. I've read positive reviews on Sheperd's work, and if anyone out there has enjoyed these novels, pleaes leave a comment and let me know.

I have also been wanting to read Sean Williams' Books of the Cataclysm series for a long time. They come highly recommened by Tobias Buckell, and check out what SFFWorld.com had to say: "[A] uniquely satisfying work. . . . Between the characters, the strange creatures, and the landscape, Seam Williams gives readers something fresh and mildly familiar in Epic Fantasy with his Books of the Cataclysm." I'm holding book 3, The Hanging Mountains, in my hand, and it looks wonderful.

I'm currently reading Williams' forthcoming novella Cenotaxis from Monkey Brain Books, and it is awesome. That didn't surprise me. I've read Williams before, so I can safely and wholeheartedly recommend his work.

- Interview with Tim Pratt. We discuss San Fransisco, supernatural fiction, small press, the Hugo awards, Locus Magazine, and more.
- Listener Feedback: were we hypocrites in our comments about Romance? Shaun and Sam eat crow and clarify. After 12 months of continuous production, AISFP is going to take a break. We have 2 more episodes to go, then we'll take a winter vacation. But fear not, we'll return in the near future bigger and better than ever with more great guest and some new segments.

Sadly, I could not speak with everyone. That's a mixed blessing. I wish I could have had all the participates on the show, but that would create a four hour episode. One hour is more manageable for all of us, but I want to extent my thanks and congratulations to all of the winners. I hope they all have the opportunity to hear these interviews. I imagine this episode will be a nice reminder of the wonderful week they had.

In this episode you will hear winners Jeff Carlson, Tony Pi, Douglas Texter, Brian Beus, Stephen Kotowych, Artem Mirolevich, and celebrity judges K.D. Wentworth and Laura Brodian Freas.

Thanks for listening folks. See you in two weeks.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The wait is over. In this episode we present our interviews with Stargate Atlantis stars Joseph Mallozzi, Jewel Staite, David Hewlett, and Joe Flanigan.

Show Notes:
- Sam and I geek out over Comic-Con. What a Con it was! I met my favorite actors, ran into Ben Browder, and chatted in the hallway with Carrie Vaughn. Sam shared an elevator with Chief Tyrol from BSG, sipped cocktails with Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and sat next to Neil Gaiman in a restaurant. Only at Comic-Con.

- Interviews with Joseph Mallozzi, Jewel Staite, David Hewlett, and Joe Flanigan. Pictures are two posts down.

- Bumper featuring Robert J. Sawyer.
- Sam and I wrap things up. Another big thanks to the kind Stargate folks for the great interviews! Sam and I will be at Conjecture in September speaking about podcasting. Come say hi.

- See you next week with Jacqueline Carey!

- Comic-Con pictures at last! I'm reposting some of the Stargate Altantis pictures for folks who don't scroll! Enjoy.

Having watched Amanda Tapping for well over 400 hours (10 seasons watched multiple times), it was very surreal to meet her. Thankfully, she was incredibly gracious and kind. Thanks, Amanda!

David Hewlett was super cool. Nothing like McKay. Not that I don't think McKay is cool, because I do. Well, you know what I mean.

Shaun with the lovely Jewel Staite. Can't wait to see her in Season 4.

Executive Producer Joseph Mallozzi. A scholar and a gentleman. My Skeletor toy is missing. Hmm. . . . (listen to the interview for context)

Shaun with Joe Flanigan. Man, he has great hair.

Sam at work. Work that booth, baby, work it!

The President and the Producer. My 2 favorite P's.

That's the last time I ask them if they think I'm cute!

That poster was teasing them the whole time. Really, they handled it rather well.

The SG-1 quartet is nearly complete.

That Robert C. Cooper is CRAZY!!

I found my lost pirate ship.

The view from my secret hiding place where I enjoyed many a power bar and bottle-o-water.

Scifi Channel has a spaceship made out of little TVs. Weird, but cool.

If only my likeness could be captured at the peek of my sexiness. . . . still waiting for that day. . . . I think my watch stopped.

One of the best cartoons ever!

My poster is bigger than yours.

These are not the droids we're looking for. You can go about your business. Move along.

Legos scare me. They scare Sam, too, but she would never admit that. She has to maintain her image of overwhelming coolness.

Holy millions of Legos, Batman!

Enough Legos already!

Comics. What a shock. There were about 20 different booths just like this.

One quarter of the exhibitor hall.

Then Lou Anders joins us to discuss the plight of science fiction sales. Are sales really dropping, or is the genre a victim of its own success? Finally, Tobias Buckell answers a listener's question.

Show Notes:
- Check out the new intro. What do you all think?
- Shaun, working alone this week, starts things off by whining about celebrity hypocrisy.
- Publishing News: DailyLit promises to send books to your cellphone, but what happened to the science fiction offerings? Don't they know that we are early adapters?! Story found at Publishers Weekly.
- Interview: Tate Hallaway talks books, marketing, writing under a different name, and so much more.
- Kilroy 2.0 is everywhere. Do you comply?
- Lou Anders of Pyr Books talks about SF sales.
- Now is your chance to ask an editor a question! Given the success of Toby's Ask a Writer column, we've decided to open up From the Editor's Desk to listeners as well. If you have a question about publishing that you would like to ask to an editor, please email it in or call the voicemail. Both can be found under the AISFP icon.
- Ask a Writer - Tobias Buckell answers a question about time management.
- Voicemail from Autumn. Thanks for the love, Autumn!

That's it for this week. Thanks for listening. As always, if you like the show, please email a friend the URL of this website, talk us up at work and write us a review in iTunes. Take care, and see you next week.

- Sam and I discuss space opera a bit more.
- Lou Anders of Pyr Books answers the loaded question: what do new writers need to do to succeed?

<itunes:summary>An extra long special show this week featuring author events from Mysterious Galaxy's 14th birthday party. Authors featured in this episode include Jan Burke, Randy Hicks, Jeff Mariotte, Susan Hubbard, Charlaine Harris, A. Lee Martinez and Marshall Karp.

These titles available through Mysterious Galaxy. Just click on the covers.

Show Notes:
- Jan Burke and Randy Hicks fill in for Elaine Viets, who is recovering from a stroke. Rest up, Elaine! We look forward to seeing you next time. Jan tells the story of how she first met Elaine, and Randy talks about his first book signing as a professional author.
- Jeff Mariotte promises cake, then he delves into the inspiration for his newest book, Missing White Girl. This book comes with the Adventures in Scifi Publishing guarantee. Check this one out folks!
- Susan Hubbard reads from The Society of S. I love it when authors refine their work so they don't need "to be" verbs. I would expect nothing less from a creative writing professor. This book comes highly recommended by Sam, as well.
- Charlaine Harris talks about being on the set of True Blood. Then she takes audience questions. I think you'll be able to catch most of this from context. The microphone didn't pick up the questions well enough to include, unfortunately.
- Robert J. Sawyer gives you a breather with station identification.
- A. Lee Martinez talks with fans. This guy is a riot. If you want something fun and slightly twisted, his books are for you.
- Promo for Light on Light Through by my good buddy Paul Levinson.
- Marshall Karp discusses blood suckers and flesh eaters, AKA: Hollywood! He then reads a short section from his new book. This is fun stuff, folks.

- Audience Interaction. What got you hooked on science fiction and fantasy? My favorite answer: My friend and I went to the library during recess and discovered Anne McCafferty.

Show Notes:
- Sam discusses some new books worthy of your attention.

(What's up with Amazon's lack of artwork? Seriously!)
- Shaun talks about Scott Sigler's new book deal. Will it open the door for other podcasters or not? Related links: Scott's Twitter page, where he makes the announcement; TeleRead gives the details of the deal.
- J.C. Hutchins talks 7th Son, the status of getting published, whether or not book 3 will be a disappointment, and gives a reading from book 1. He only had one hiccup while reading, which I did edit out because while it was just one mistake, it was a big one! Love ya, Hutch! Great reading.
- Listener feedback: Kory asks about Dr. Howard Hendrix's comments concerning webscabs. Sam and I discuss. Is the good doctor wrong? Or did he just have poor judgement in his selection of words? Check out Dr. Hendrix's explanation.
- What do you think of the issues raised in this show? Please, let us know. Let us discuss.

Thanks for listening, as always.
