These muffins are full of wholesome oats and applesauce, plus they are low in fat and sugars.

They are topped with an oat and cinnamon crumble topping that's just sweet enough to satisfy my sweet tooth, but not so sweet that I feel like I'm eating dessert for breakfast.

I cannot say enough good things about these muffins. My kids, who snub their nose at anything that's the least bit "healthy", gobble them up and ask for more.

The whole family loves these oatmeal applesauce muffins.

My kids love it when I make breakfast. I used to make it all the time, but somehow over the years, I've become a bit lazy.

We have cereal most mornings because I don't want to wake up any earlier than necessary.

I've recently realized something profound - muffins can be made ahead! I know, it's a bit obvious. But it really hadn't occurred to me before.

Now I can still sleep late(r) and my kids can have a home-cooked breakfast too.

HEALTHY APPLESAUCE OAT MUFFINS RECIPE

Time for a little confession: I didn't even make these muffins this time, I assigned my oldest to do it. She's a great cook and these muffins were delicious.

Not only do these wholesome muffins taste good for a quick breakfast, but I sometimes put them in my kid's lunchboxes. Lunches don't get much easier than that!

INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR APPLESAUCE OATMEAL MUFFINS

These easy muffins use simple ingredients. You most likely have most of them in your pantry.

The exact quantities are listed in the recipe section.

oats*
all purpose flour
brown sugar
baking powder
baking soda
cinnamon
salt
unsweetened applesauce
milk
vegetable oil*
egg
vanilla
butter

*I use half quick oats and half rolled oats. You can use either type of oats for this recipe. I prefer quick oats for the topping.

*You could substitute canola oil or coconut oil for the vegetable oil.

HOW TO MAKE APPLESAUCE OAT MUFFINS

Let's get started with these easy applesauce muffins.

To begin simply add all the dry ingredients to a large bowl and give it a quick stir.

Then add all the wet ingredients and stir just until combined.

The muffin batter will be quite thick.

MAKING THE OAT CRUMBLE TOPPING

The oat crumb topping is easy to make as well.

Begin by melting the butter in a small bowl. I do this in the microwave. Then add the oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon to the melted butter. Then stir to combine.

ASSEMBLING AND BAKING THE MUFFINS

Line a muffin pan with paper liners. I always spray the liners with cooking spray too.

Add a generous scoop of batter to each muffin cup.

I generally fill the muffin pretty much to the top. As they bake they will rise up and create a nice rounded top to the muffin.

Add a spoonful of oat crumble to the top of each muffin.

Bake at 400 for 15-16 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

I usually let them cool right in the pan. But you can move them to a wire rack to cool if desired.

I'm totally going to make these in a min muffin tin next time. They would make the perfect healthy snack.

Store muffins in an air tight container for 5-7 days.

16 PATCH QUILT BLOCK (USING STRIPS)

I recently made a quilt for a new baby in the family. The quilt featured two quilt blocks - this 16-patch quilt block and sawtooth star quilt blocks. I'll be sharing the quilt soon.

This is not the only way you can make a 16 patch quilt block. You can also sew together 4 four-patch units. Or you can sew together all 16 squares individually.

I find the strip method to be a quick way to make lots of blocks at once. If you only need a few blocks, you could try another method.

HOW TO MAKE 16 PATCH BLOCKS IN DIFFERENT SIZES

For this tutorial, I made 8 inch quilt blocks. There's a simple formula to make different sizes.

Finished block size + 2 ÷ 4 = strip width

Using my 8 inch block as an example, 8 + 2 = 10. 10 ÷ 4 = 2 1/2. So I need to start with 2 1/2 inch strips.

You can use this same formula to create any size blocks. If you don't want to do the math, I've figured out the most common block sizes for you.

3 inch block: cut 1 1/4 inch strips

6 inch block: cut 2 inch strips

8 inch block: cut 2 1/2 inch strips

10 inch block: cut 3 inch strips

12 inch block: cut 3 1/2 inch strips

15 inch block: cut 4 1/4 inch strips

18 inch block: cut 5 inch strips

I've got a handy printable page with the cut sizes and instructions for easy reference. Simply choose the size of block you prefer to find the strip widths. Simply sign up with the form at the bottom of the post and the printable will be sent directly to your email.

HOW TO MAKE 16-PATCH BLOCKS

Using fabric strips to make a 16 patch block helps with accuracy. Since this block finishes at 8", I started with 2 1/2 inch strips.

I used a layer cake to cut my strips from. Fat quarters or scrap fabric work well too. If making 8" or smaller blocks, jelly roll fabric can be used.

Arrange the strips and sew them together using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Once the fabric is sewn together, press seams to one side.

Next the sewn strips into 2 1/2 inch strips. Each strip will now have 4 different fabrics in it.

Repeat with several times with a variety of fabrics.

Once you have at least 4 different strip sets, you can put together your 16 patch.

Arrange the strips in a manner you like. To ensure each of your squares line up exactly, it's important that you nest your seams.

To nest, the seams of one strip should face the opposite direction of the seams on the next strip. Depending on how you lay out the strips, you may need to press the seams on some of the strips the opposite direction before sewing.

Using a 1/4 inch seam allowance sew together the strips. Press the seams to one side.

Repeat this process to make a variety of 16 patch blocks.

FREE PATTERN: HANGING SHOE ORGANIZER

Note: This post was originally published in 2011. My kids are all but grown now. However, this shoe rack is still hanging in our front closet. It holds flip-flops, gloves and dog walking supplies.

With four kids we have a ton of shoes. This was my shoe organization system before.

Just a basket that the shoes were supposed to be thrown in.

The problem was that every time the kids looked for their shoes they would end up throwing them all out as they looked.

And we have too many shoes to fit in the basket.

One day when I couldn't shut the closet door, because there were too many shoes in the way, I decided to try something new.

I made an over the door shoe organizer.

HOW TO MAKE A DIY HANGING SHOE ORGANIZER

This specific pattern is to hold children's shoes. I originally made this in September of 2011. At the time, my oldest kids wore children's size two. We have continued to use it over the years.

Now my youngest daughter is a children's size 4. We still use it for the two younger girls. Things like gym shoes don't fit very well, but we still put flip flops or girls dress shoes in the pockets.

It's also a handy place to keep my headphones and sunglasses that I use each morning on my walk.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR A DIY OVER THE DOOR SHOE

1 piece fabric - 3/4 yard for back
4 pieces fabric - 1/4 yard each.
adhesive backed hooks
dowel - I used 7/16 because that's what I had
sewing machine and sewing supplies

UPDATE: The adhesive backed hooks did not hold very long. What I ended up doing was using two door hooks. They hang on the top of the door and are much sturdier than the adhesive backed hooks.

Also, using sturdy fabric will make the shoe holder more durable. We've used ours forever. It's held up pretty well, but there is one spot where the weight of the shoes has ripped the pocket from the back. I suggest using a duck cloth or canvas for your fabric.

CUT OUT YOUR FABRIC TO THESE SIZES:

Back - 27" x 36"
4 strips for pockets - 9" x 36"
4 strips for hooks - 3" x 9"

STEPS TO MAKE A HANGING SHOE ORGANIZER

Let's begin with the back.

Hem under three sides of your back (leaving one 27" side open for now)

Begin with one of the 27" sides. The best way to hem is to fold the edge over 1/4 inch and then iron flat.

Then fold again 1/4 inch and iron flat again.

Stitch in place. Repeat this process with the two 36" sides.

For the fourth side, which will be the top side, you'll want to make a pocket for your dowel. So you will fold over 1/4 inch and iron, but then you will fold it over at least an inch. Stitch, leaving the ends open for the dowel to slide in.

For the hook straps, fold in half lengthwise with right sides together and stitch (left).
Then turn it right side out and iron flat (middle). Then top stitch close to edges. (right). Repeat for all strips.

Note: If using the sturdier door hooks that hang from the top of the door, you will only need to make 2 of these strips.

Sew the hook straps to the top, along the existing stitching. I attached the end two straps 1" from each end and then eyeballed the middle two straps.

Now it's time to sew the pockets.

Hem under the long sides of your pocket fabric and fold over and iron 1/4 inch on each short end.

I attached the pockets two different ways. I used pleats for some and I gathered the bottom for others. I think the gathering was the easiest, so that's what I'll show you.

Using the longest stitch on your machine, sew along the bottom hem line. Sew again 1/8 inch from the first stitches.

Then pull on one of the threads to gather the material.

Place it on your backing and pin in place. This will require some adjusting to get it to gather evenly.

Stitch in place along both sides and bottom.

Next measure every six inches and marked it with a pin along the top and bottom. Stitch a vertical seam to form the pockets.

Repeat with other pocket strips. I measured two inches down for the placement of the top pocket. I did the bottom pocket along the bottom. And I eyeballed the middle two pieces.

Insert your dowel in the top of the shoe rack. Mark it and then cut it to length. Mine ended up being 24".

Attach your hooks to the inside of door using your shoe organizer as a guide for correct spacing
(or use the over the door hooks for a sturdier organizer).

Hang your organizer and fill with shoes.

I was able to fit 16 pairs of shoes into the 12 pockets. Each of my son's tennis shoes needed their own pocket, but most of the shoes I could fit one or more pair to a pocket. It was easy to stick two pairs of my little one's flip flops into one pocket.

Hope this helps you get a little more organized. It sure helped me.

I have to tell you though, after making my own, the lava cakes on our last cruise just weren't up to snuff.

Homemade is SO much better and they really are extremely easy. I promise!

These rich chocolate cakes with the molten center are perfect for special occasions.

But they're so easy, you can make them any time!

Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream and/or some fresh berries for a decadent treat.

HOW TO MAKE EASY CHOCOLATE LAVA CAKES FROM SCRATCH

Ok, let's get started with these easy chocolate desserts.

I'll walk you through the whole process. It's so simple - a 5 ingredient, one bowl recipe.

The recipe is at the very end, if you want to skip ahead.

Place butter and semi sweet baking squares in a heat-safe bowl.

I like to use a semi-sweet baking chocolate bar. Baker's chocolate is found in the baking aisle near the chocolate chips.

You can try substituting another high quality baking chocolate, but DO NOT use chocolate chips - it won't turn out right and you won't get that gooey chocolate center.

Put it in microwave for 1-2 minutes. Stir until chocolate is completely melted and incorporated into the butter.

Add powdered sugar and stir.

Add the whole eggs and the egg yolks into the chocolate mixture and stir until combined.

Add flour and stir.

At this point, you can either bake them, or store the batter in the fridge for up to two days to bake later.

You can either store the entire bowl of batter in the fridge.

Or you can divide the batter into the prepared ramekins before refrigerating. Either way be sure to cover the batter.

If refrigerated, let sit out until it comes to room temperature before baking.

Pour into four well-greased ramekins. I use cooking spray to grease them. You want an easy release.

WHAT CAN I USE INSTEAD OF RAMEKINS FOR LAVA CAKE?

A muffin pan is a great substitution! If you decide to use a muffin tin be aware that you will have more cakes (6-8) but they will be mini lava cakes.

The bake time will decrease (8-9 minutes), but they turn out just as good.

Since this recipe makes 4 lava cakes and there are six people in our family, I often make them in muffin tins so there is enough for everyone.

Bake at 425. Muffin cakes take about 8-9 minutes and the ramekins take 13-14 minutes.

Let sit 1 minute. Run a butter knife around the edge and then dump out and devour!

As soon as you cut into it, all the "lava" comes pouring out. Just look at that rich molten chocolate center! It's oh-so-delicious!

Sprinkle with a dusting of confectioners' sugar to make them extra pretty.

I like them best with a scoop of ice cream. The ooey gooey inside is the perfect chocolate fudge sauce.

This would be the perfect Valentine's day dessert.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN THE LAVA CAKE IS DONE?

The edges of the lava cake will be firm, but the center will still be jiggly and not set. Remember the longer you cook it, the less molten chocolate will be in the center.

HOW TO STORE CHOCOLATE LAVA CAKE

I fully recommend making these right before serving. They are best eaten within minutes of baking. That's when you get the best molten "lava".

If they sit around, they continue cooking. If they are re-heated they also continue cooking. Both of these scenarios will cause the gooey chocolate sauce to be cooked and ultimately turn into cake, instead of sauce.

It still tastes good, but the whole point of the lava cake is to have all that gooey yumminess. So do yourself a favor and bake them right before you would like to eat them.

If you want to get the prep work done ahead of time, feel free to mix up the batter and refrigerate until ready to bake. Be sure to let the batter sit out on the counter until it comes to room temperature before baking.

Woven Frame Quilt Block

There’s something so satisfying about a quilt block that looks more complicated than it actually is.

The woven frame quilt block is a gorgeous 16 inch patchwork design that creates the illusion of frames weaving over and under each other.

When I first saw this block, I knew I had to figure out how to make it. I could not find a pattern anywhere.

So I got out some graph paper and figured out the math.

This is a much larger block than I usually make. But that makes it ideal for a focal point of a quilt.

The woven frame block is a bit more complex than my usual tutorials. (Don't worry, I explain all the steps in detail in the pattern.)

Let's start with the cross stitch. Isn't it adorable?

FABRIC NEEDED FOR THE TABLE TOPPER

You'll need to make two striped heart blocks, and one heart block with the horizontal stripes.

For the sashing, border and cornerstone pieces:

10) 1 1/2" X 12 1/2" (red)
8) 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" (blue)
18" X 44" (backing)
18" X 44" (batting)
1/4 yard binding fabric (cut into 2 1/2" strips)

ASSEMBLING THE TABLE RUNNER

I will apologize right now that I didn't get process shots. However, I did do videos of the entire process of assembling and finishing the runner.

So, I have written instructions and video. If you'd like step-by-step diagrams, then grab the pattern.

Here's the assembly video.

Step 1:

Gather the 8 cornerstone squares and 4 sashing strips.

Sew a cornerstone square on each end of the sashing strips. Press toward the sashing.

Step 2:

Gather the remaining 6 sashing strips and the quilt blocks.

Sew a sashing strip on the top and bottom of each quilt block. Press toward the sashing.

Step 3:

Sew together the sashing strips with the blocks, nesting the seams as you go.

FINISHING THE QUILT

Make a quilt sandwich with the backing, batting and top.

Watch the quilt sandwich video here.

On a flat surface place the backing right side down.

Place the batting on the backing.

Next, center the top with the right side up.

Pin the layers together.

Quilt as desired. (See my easy free motion quilting technique that is perfect for beginners.)

Then trim the batting and back to match up with the top.

BINDING THE QUILT

Cut the binding fabric into 2 1/2 inch strips.

Sew the strips together, end to end to make one very long strip of fabric for the binding.

Press the strip in half lengthwise, with right sides out to create the binding.

Bind the quilt.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS FOR A 12" STRIPED HEART BLOCK

4) 3 1/2" X 12 1/2" rectangles (in 4 different colors)
4) 3 1/2" cream squares
2) 6 1/2" cream squares

HOW TO MAKE A STRIPED HEART QUILT BLOCK

Let's get started.

To begin, draw a diagonal line on each cream square of fabric. Use a ruler to draw the line from corner to corner.

Arrange the rectangle pieces in the order you'd like them.

Place a small square at the top of each rectangle.

Orient the lines so that they create two 'points'.

Stitch along the lines.

Trim each piece 1/4 inch from the stitching line on the triangle side.

Think of the units as two pairs. Press the right side of each pair towards the cream fabric. Press the left side of each pair toward the rectangle fabric.

This will allow the seams to nest as we assemble them in the next step.

Sew together each pair of rectangles. Press the seam in either direction.

Sew the paired units together. Press the seam in either direction.

Place a large square on the bottom left of the block. Orient the diagonal line so that one end is on the middle left and the other is on the middle bottom of the block.

Stitch along the drawn line.

Trim 1/4" from the stitching line on the triangle side of the unit.

Press open the block.

Place the remaining square on the bottom right of the block. Orient the diagonal line so that one end is on the middle right and the other is on the middle bottom of the block.

Stitch along the drawn line.

Trim 1/4" from the stitching line on the triangle side of the unit.

Press open the block.

HOW TO MAKE A HEART QUILT BLOCK WITH HORIZONTAL STRIPES

This quilt block is pretty easy. Make a few flying geese and then assemble the block.

MAKING THE FLYING GEESE

Let's begin by making the points of the heart.

The two small points at the top of the heart and the large point at the bottom of the heart are made using flying geese units.

Below, I've shown the process with the large rectangle and large squares. You'll repeat this same process with the smaller pieces.

Step 1: Draw a line diagonally across the two squares.

Step 2: Place one square on the left side of the rectangle. The diagonal line should begin in the bottom left and angle toward the top right of the square. Stitch along the drawn line.

Step 3: Trim on the triangle side of the seam. Trim 1/4 inch from the stitching line.

Step 4: Press open the unit.

Step 5: Place the other square on the right of the rectangle. The diagonal line should begin in the top middle and angle towards the bottom right. Stitch along the drawn line.

Step 6: Trim 1/4 inch away from the stitching on the triangle side.

Step 7: Press open the unit.

Repeat steps 1-7 for the two smaller flying geese to make the heart points.

ASSEMBLING THE HEART QUILT BLOCK

Now it's time to assemble the heart block.

Lay out the pieces of the block.

Place the two small heart points at the top with the points upward.

Next, place the two long rectangle pieces.

Then place the large heart point at the bottom with the point downward.

With right sides together, sew together the two heart points. Press seam to one side.

Then sew together each row, pressing seams to one side as you go.

5) 2 1/2" red squares
4) 2 1/2" pink squares
4) 2 1/2" cream squares

2) 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" red rectangles
1) 4 1/2" cream square

HOW TO MAKE A WOVEN HEART QUILT BLOCK

The woven heart is a simple block featuring a nine patch and striped units. The alternating colors give the block the woven illusion.

MAKING THE NINE PATCH

Let's get started by making a nine patch.

Select the 5 red and 4 pink squares.

Arrange them in a 3 X 3 grid. The red squares should be in the corners and the center. The pink squares should be on the sides.

Sew each row together. Press toward the red squares.

Sew the rows to each other, nesting seams as you go. Press the seams towards the edges.

MAKING THE STRIPED UNITS

Next, we'll make the striped units of the block.

Select the four pink rectangles and the four cream squares.

Place each square on a the end of a rectangle.

Stitch on the cream squares from corner to corner.

Note: Pay attention to the direction of your diagonal seam. Work in pairs and make sure the seams mirror each other.

Trim 1/4" from the seam on the triangle side.

Press open.

Now it's time to assemble our striped units.

Select two (mirrored) pink/cream rectangles and a red rectangle.

Arrange the pink on either side of the red. The unit will resemble a barn.

Sew the pieces together. Press toward the red center strip.

Repeat to make two units.

ASSEMBLING THE BLOCK

Now that all the pieces are made, it's time to assemble the block.

Arrange the units in a 2 X 2 grid to create a four patch.

Place the nine patch in the bottom left corner.

Place the one striped unit to the right of the nine patch and the other above the nine patch.

Lastly, place the cream square diagonally to the right of the nine patch.

Sew together each row. Press the seams in opposite directions.

Sew the rows together, nesting seems as you go. Press flat.

Crossroads Quilt Block Tutorial

The crossroads quilt block is a great way to showcase a variety of fabrics.

Feel free to use precuts or select fabric from your stash.

This block is made using just two basic units arranged just so to create an X.

This is a classic block that is often arranged in a diamond shape.

But to me a cross roads is where two roads intersect. My block reflects that definition.

Interestingly enough, when creating a whole quilt with either arrangement, the end result is nearly identical.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS FOR A 16" CROSSROADS BLOCK

8) 4 1/2 inch squares in white
48) 2 1/2 inch squares in a variety of colors

Note: Use precuts or fabrics from your stash. A precut jelly roll makes quick work of cutting the smaller squares since they are already 2 1/2 inches wide.

HOW TO MAKE A CROSSROADS QUILT BLOCK

The crossroads block is made of two basic units - the four patch, and what I'll call the cross block.

You'll need 8 of each.

Then it's simply a matter of assembling them.

MAKING THE CROSS BLOCKS

For each block, select one white 4 1/2 inch white square and two colored 2 1/2 inch squares.

On the two small squares draw a line diagonally from corner to corner on the back side of the fabric.

Place the small squares on opposite corners of the white square with the lines parallel to each other.

Sew along the drawn lines.

Trim 1/4 inch away from the seam on the point side of the seam.

Press the seams flat.
The block should be 4 1/2 inches at this point.

Repeat to make a total of 8 blocks.

MAKING THE FOUR PATCH BLOCKS

To make a four patch block, select four 2 1/2 inch pieces.

Arrange the block in two rows of two.

Sew together the two squares for the top row, then sew the two squares for the bottom row.

Press the seams.

Note: I like to press the seam for the top row to the left and the seam for the bottom row to the right. Then the seams will nest nicely as we sew the rows together.

Sew the two rows together.

Press the seams flat.

One way to get the seams of a four patch block as flat as possible is to press the seams in both directions, changing at the center seam. (See picture above.)

At the center point, wiggle the fabric a bit to loosen the stitches. The fabric can then be pressed to create a tiny little four patch in the center.

This helps with the bulk in the middle and the block will lay better.

These blocks should also be 4 1/2 inches square.

Repeat to make 8 four patch blocks.

MAKING THE DIAGONAL BLOCKS

Now it's time to begin assembling our block. First we will create another four patch, using two of our four patches and two of our cross blocks.

Arrange the units so that the cross blocks are opposite each other with the points creating a diagonal line across the block.

Place the 4 patch blocks in the remaining corners, opposite each other.

Sew together each row. Press flat.

Sew the rows together. Press flat.
Repeat to make 4 of these blocks.

They should measure 8 1/2 inches.

ASSEMBLING THE CROSSROADS QUILT BLOCK

Arrange the four blocks again in a 4-patch formation.

Rotate the blocks as necessary to create a large x with the white sections of the blocks.

Sew together each row. Press flat.

Sew the rows together. Press flat.

The finished block is 16 1/2 inches. Once sewn into a quilt it will be a 16 inch block.

ALTERNATIVE ASSEMBLY METHOD

If you'd like to assemble the block the more traditional way, then simply arrange the white lines into a diamond shape during the final assembly of the block.

It's pretty crazy the different look it creates using the exact same blocks just arranged differently.

But what's even more crazy is that both blocks create a very similar quilt.

The image on the left is using my quilt block. The image on the right is using the traditional method.
You can see they are nearly identical.

Aunt Dinah Quilt Block

The Aunt Dinah quilt block is gorgeous made with two fabrics.

The block is made up of two unique quilting units and then assembled using a basic nine patch method.

AUNT DINAH QUILT BLOCK

I'm loving the red and white fabric together.

I've made a few blocks with this color scheme. The Amish Star and the Counterchange Cross blocks.

I've got partial bolts of muslin and the red fabric. So you'll likely see more blocks with these colors.

Note: I'm not sure if muslin is typically recommended or not for quilting. One thing I have noticed is that the wrinkles don't iron out easily. The off-white color pairs well with the red and I have a lot of it, so I will use it.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS FOR A 6" AUNT DINAH BLOCK

Cut the following for a six inch block.

Center

1) 2 1/2" white square

Corner Units

4) 2 1/2" red squares
4) 1 1/2" white squares
8) 1 1/2" white squares

Side Units

1) 3 1/2" red square
4) 2 1/8" white squares
4) 1 1/2" X 2 1/2" white rectangles

HOW TO MAKE THE AUNT DINAH QUILT BLOCK

This quilt block is made up of corner units, side units and a center square.

MAKING THE CORNER UNITS

Gather the pieces for the corner units.

4) 2 1/2" red squares
4) 1 1/2" white squares
8) 1 1/2" white squares

Step 1: Select one small red square and two white squares.

Step 2: Sew the white square to the red square on one side. Press toward the white square.

Step 3: Sew the other white square to the side of the red square. Line up the bottom edges, the top of the square will overlap onto the white part of the unit. Press toward the white square.

Step 4: Place the newly made unit on a large red square with right sides together. Align so that the corners of the two red squares match up. Sew diagonally across the block.

Step 5: Trim the square 1/4 inch from the seam line. (Make sure to trim off the side with the loose triangle points.)

Step 6: Press the unit open with the seam towards the red triangle.

Repeat steps 1-6 to make a total of 4 corner units.

MAKING THE SIDE UNITS

The side units are made up of flying geese units and rectangles.

Step 7: With the 3 1/2" red square and the four 2 1/8" white squares make the flying geese units. Refer to the image above for instructions.

Step 8: Trim the flying geese to 1 1/2" X 2".

Step 9: Select one flying geese unit and one rectangle.

Step 10: With right sides together sew along the point side of the rectangle. Press toward the rectangle.

Step 11: Repeat steps 9-10 for a total of 4 side units.

ASSEMBLING THE AUNT DINAH QUILT BLOCK

Now that all the units are made, it's time to assemble the block.

Arrange the pieces in a 3 x 3 grid.

Place the white square in the center.

Place the side units on each side of the center square with the points outward.

Place the corner units in each corner with the triangle facing inward.

Next sew together like you would a nine patch.

Sew each row together. Press the seams of the center row toward the middle. Press the seams of the top and bottom rows away from the middle.

Sew each row together, nesting seams as you go.

Press the block flat.

That's it!

Here's another layout option using the same pieces. Simply flip the corner units to create this look.

We've reached the final week of the Basket Patch quilt along!

All the blocks have been made and it's time to put them all together.

This week we will create rows with our blocks, cut out and add the sashing and cornerstones, add our setting triangles around the outside of the quilt and trim it up to get ready for quilting.

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR QUILTING

When using an on-point layout, the quilt can get a little off-square.

One way to counteract this is to make the setting triangles slightly oversized and them trim them to square after.

To trim up the corners I used a large 16 1/2" square ruler. For the sides, I used a 24" ruler.

Below are standard quilting tools you will use constantly:

HST Ruler

For this quilt I used the Spring Nectar fabric line from Connecting Threads.

I used the fat quarter bundle for the blocks.

The sashing is Spring Nectar Costa Ditsy.

I used Spring Nectar Tiny Garden Dk Bubblegum for the cornerstones and binding.

For the backing I used Spring Nectar Tiny Garden Lt Turquoise.

CUTTING OUT SASHING, CORNERSTONES AND SETTING TRIANGLES

To assemble the quilt, we will need sashing, cornerstones and setting triangles.

Below is a cut list:

Sashing - Cut 48) 1 1/2" X 10 1/2" strips
Cornerstones - Cut 31) 1 1/2" squares
Corner Triangles - Cut 2) 8 1/2" squares
Side Triangles - Cut 3) 16" squares

You'll notice above that the triangles listed have square measurements. This means we need to cut them into triangles.

For the corner triangles, cut each square in half on the diagonal.

For the side triangles, cut the larger squares in quarters, cutting on each diagonal.

ON-POINT QUILT ASSEMBLY

Next layout your quilt. Use the diagram for reference.

The sashing pieces surround each block with cornerstones between. Add the side triangles to the sides and the corner triangles on each corner.

MAKING THE ROWS

An on-point quilt is assembled in rows.

The rows reveal themselves when the quilt is viewed on the diagonal.

There are two types of rows. The sashing rows and the block rows.

Sashing rows consist of alternating sashing and cornerstone squares. They begin and end with cornerstone squares.

Block rows consist of sashing and quilt blocks. They begin and end with sashing.

Assemble each sashing row and each block row. DO NOT add any triangles to the rows yet.

Press toward the sashing in all rows.

Once all the rows have been sewn together, it's time to add the SIDE triangles. DO NOT add any corner triangles yet.

ADDING THE SIDE TRIANGLES

For each block row, add a side triangle to each end.

NOTE: the two middle rows have corner triangles on one side. DO NOT add these yet, these rows will only have the side triangles for now.

Line up the bottom edge of the triangle with the bottom edge of the block.

There will be a little bit of the corner of the triangle extending past the top of the block. This is correct.

Sew along the side to attach the triangle. Press toward the sashing.

Repeat with other side triangles.

ADDING THE END TRIANGLES

Fold the the top row in half and finger press a crease to mark the center.

Fold the triangle in half and again finger press a crease to mark the center.

With right sides together, line up the center points. Pin in place and stitch.

Press the seam flat.

Repeat with the remaining corners.

TRIMMING UP THE QUILT

Trim up the quilt. The triangles are slightly oversized so that we can square up the quilt perfectly.

Place a large ruler in the corner of the quilt. Line up the ¼ inch marking of the ruler with the points where the cornerstones meet the sashing. Make sure to measure both the top and side cornerstone. Trim the excess.

Move the ruler down along the side.

Use a ruler that is long enough to reach from cornerstone to cornerstone.

Repeat the process of lining up the ¼ inch marking of the ruler with the points.

Then trim the excess.

Repeat around the entire quilt.

ADDING THE BORDERS

At this point your quilt should be 46 3/4" X 62 1/4".

However, it is likely that your quilt is not exactly the size indicated (Mine wasn’t!).

It’s important to measure your actual quilt top before adding the borders to make sure we cut them correctly.

Take measurements of the top and bottom. (They could be slightly different lengths.)

Cut 4 1/2" strips by the measurements of your quilt top and bottom. You will need to piece together strips to make it long enough.

Sew the top and bottom borders to the quilt. Press toward the border.

Next, take measurements of both sides of the quilt.

Cut 4 1/2" strips by the measurements of the sides. (Again piece together strips.)

Sew the side borders to the quilt. Press toward the border.

NOTE: I am not good at getting accurate measurements. SO, I give myself an extra couple inches and then trim to square after I sew each border piece on. This is not “proper” quilting, but I find it works fine for me and I am not frustrated when I cut a border piece ¼” short because of my faulty measuring.

Here is the finished quilt top. It still needs to be quilted, but I didn't want to delay this quilt along any longer.

FINISHING THE QUILT

Find a floor space large enough to lay out the quilt.

Lay the backing down with the right side down.

Place the batting on the backing.

Next add the top with the right side up.

Trim the back and batting to 4” bigger on all sides.

Pin the layers together.

Quilt as desired.

Then trim the batting and back to match up with the top.

Note: The backing for the quilt will need to be cut and sewn to create a backing large enough to cover the back. A long arm quilter will need at least 4 inches of backing and batting on all sides. Don’t pin together if sending it to a long arm quilter.

BINDING THE QUILT

Cut the fabric you’ve chosen for the binding into 3 inch strips.

Sew the strips together, end to end to make one very long strip of fabric for the binding.

Press the strip in half lengthwise, with right sides out to create the binding.

Bind the quilt.

Below are the supplies to make these darling diy Christmas ornaments.

DECORATING SUPPLY IDEAS

Rummage through your craft supplies and see what you can come up with.

I didn't end up purchasing anything new for these ornaments.

Somehow that makes them even more special... to be able to use up bits and pieces from previous projects.

HOW TO MAKE DENIM ORNAMENTS

Begin by printing out the cookie cutter shapes printable. Print it on cardstock for stability.

Note: (You can trace your own cookie cutters if you'd like!)

Cut out the cardstock shape. Using a Frixion pen, trace the pattern onto the leg of an old pair of jeans.

Cut around the shape through both layers of the pant leg, leaving at least a half inch on all sides.

Note: For a different look, use the inside of the jeans on the outside of the ornaments. To do this, cut a piece of denim off the pants and adjust the layers so the inner side of the jeans is on the outside. Then trace.

Cut a 7 inch piece of twine. Insert both ends of the twine between the layers of the denim at the top of the ornament. This is used to hang the ornament.

Next, sew along the traced line, starting with the top to capture the twine. Sew slowly and carefully.

Tip: As you navigate the sharp corners, make sure your needle is down in the fabric, lift the presser foot and adjust the fabric in the desired direction.

Trim 1/8 inch from the sewn line using pinking shears. Be careful not to cut the twine as you cut the denim!

Press the ornament with a hot iron to remove the Frixion pen.

Repeat with the different shapes to make more ornaments.

Now the fun part! Embellishing the ornaments!

Dig through your stash and see what you can find to dress up your ornaments.

The embellishments are added using hot glue.

Below are ideas for embellishment. Use what you have and be creative with it.

The stocking features lace trim atop a braided twine ribbon.
The gingerbread man has ricrac on his arms and legs and pom poms down the middle.
The snowman sports a ribbon scarf.
The star is outlined with a lacey ribbon.
The bell features a simple bow.
And the Christmas tree has heart-shaped buttons as ornaments.

I hope you enjoy making these denim ornaments.

They're a great way to turn leftover supplies into something you can use year after year.

Keep them for your own tree, or give them as gifts.

They'd make a cute gift tag too! Just write who it's to and from on the back.

Cut 1) 6 inch square (color A)
Cut 1) 6 inch square (color B)
Cut 2) 6 inch squares (white)
Cut 1) 2 1/2 inch square (color A)
Cut 3) 2 1/2 inch squares (white)
Cut 2) 2 1/2 X 6 1/2 inch rectangles (white)

HOW TO MAKE A FLOWER BASKET QUILT BLOCK

The flower basket block is made of lots of half square triangles in two different colors.

Add in some squares and rectangles to complete the block.

MAKING THE HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES (8 AT A TIME)

Let's get started by making the half square triangles.

We will make two sets of 8 at a time HST's.

Use the 6 inch squares, pairing each white with a color fabric.

Trim the HST's to 2 1/2 inches.

ASSEMBLING THE FLOWER BASKET QUILT BLOCK

Now it's time to assemble the block.

All seams are 1/4 inch and remember right sides together.

Use the diagram to layout the pieces in the correct orientation. You will have one extra half square triangle.

Sew the pieces in the far right column into a strip. Press the seams upward.

Sew each row together.

Press the seams of each row in opposite directions.

Sew the rows together, nesting seams as you go.

Press the seams downward.

Be careful to keep the pieces oriented correctly. You can see my mistake above. I didn't notice it until I finished the block.

I unpicked until I got the piece out. Then I sewed it back in place.

I recommend checking twice and sewing once!

The last step is to sew the remaining strip to the right side of the block.

Press seams flat.

HOW TO MAKE A FLOWER BASKET QUILT BLOCK

The flower basket block is fairly simple to make.

If you can make half square triangles, then you can make this block.

MAKING THE 2 AT A TIME HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES

Let's begin by making some half square triangles using the 2 at a time method.

Select the two 7 inch squares and the two 3 inch squares.

Make the half square triangles as directed above.

Trim the large HST to 6 1/2 inches. Trim the small HST to 2 1/2 inches.

MAKING MORE HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES (8 AT A TIME)

We still need lots more half square triangles.

So let's make them using the 8 at a time method.

Select the 6 inch squares.

Make the HST's according the the chart above.

Trim the squares to 2 1/2 inches.

ASSEMBLING THE BASKET QUILT BLOCK

Now it's time to assemble the block.

Remember to use 1/4 inch seam allowance and sew the pieces with right sides together.

Use the illustration above to lay out your pieces.

You will have one extra large HST and one extra small HST.

Keep in mind seam allowances. The pieces will not look like they're gonna fit. But they will.

Sew together all the outer strips.

Sew the top four HST's together. Press seams toward the left.

Sew the three HST's on the left together. Press seams flat in either direction.

Sew the rectangle and HST on the bottom together. Press seams flat in either direction.

And sew the rectangle, HST and square on the right side together. Press seams upward.

Sew the strip of HST's on the left side to the large HST. Press seams toward the large HST.

Sew the top row and the bottom row onto the block. Press all seams downward.

Sew the remaining strip to the right side of the block. Press seams flat.

Make two sets for a total of 16 HST's with the 6 inch squares. Pair a white and a color for each set.

I decided to try something new.

There are so many quilting methods that I use over and over in different blocks.

So I created the image above that I can use any time I create 8 at a time HST's.

I hope that it's helpful to you. I think it will be a big time-saver for me.

Once you've made both sets of half square triangles, trim them to 2 1/2 inches. Press them open and trim the tails.

ASSEMBLING THE MAY BASKET QUILT BLOCK

Now that we've made all the HST's, it's time to assemble the block.

All seams are 1/4 inch and remember right sides together.

Use the diagram to layout the pieces in the correct orientation. You will have two extra HST's.

When you lay out the block, it will look like it's not going to fit together.

But when you take into account the seam allowances, it all works.

Sew together each row. The far right pieces, sew together into a column.

Take care to keep the blocks oriented correctly as you assemble the block.

Press the seams of each row in opposite directions.

Press the seams of the column upward.

Sew each row together, nesting seams as you go.

Press the seams upward.

Sew the remaining strip to the right side of the block.

Press seam flat.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS FOR A 10" BASKET BLOCK

You will need three colors of fabric and a background fabric for this block.

Below is the colors I used in the tutorial.
Fabric A - pink
Fabric B - light yellow
Fabric C - yellow flower
Fabric D - background

Cut 1 EACH from fabrics A, B, C, & D - 4 1/8" squares
Cut 1 EACH from fabrics A & D - 6" squares
Cut 1 EACH from fabrics C & D - 3" squares
Cut 3 (fabric C) & Cut 1 (fabric D) - 2 1/2" squares
Cut 2 (fabric D) - 2 1/2" X 6 1/2"

(Note: The rectangle fabric pieces are missing from the picture.)

HOW TO MAKE A BASKET OF CHIPS QUILT BLOCK

Make 3 basket of chips blocks for the basket patch quilt along.

This block has lots of half square triangles. So it's a great one to practice the different methods to make them.

We will use the 8 at a time method, the 4 at a time method and the 2 at a time method.

MAKING HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES (8 AT A TIME)

Let get started with the half square triangles.

Step 1: Select the two 6" squares (Fabric A & D). Draw four lines 1/4 inch from the center diagonally in both directions.

Note: I use a quilting ruler, line up the 1/4 inch marking diagonally from corner to corner and draw along the edge of the ruler. Flip and repeat.

Step 2: Sew along the lines.

Step 3: Cut the block in half horizontally, vertically and diagonally in both directions.

Step 4: Trim the HST's to 2 1/2". Press the seams toward the fabric A and trim the tails.

Set these units aside for now.

MAKING HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES (4 AT A TIME)

Now let's make the half square triangles using the 4 at a time method.

You will make two sets of HST's with this method.

Step 5: Select the 4 1/8" squares. Pair fabric C & D together, and fabric A & B together. Make sure right sides are together.

Step 6: Sew all the way around each set of squares 1/4 inch from the edges.

Step 7: Cut each square in half diagonally in both directions.

Step 8: Trim the HST's to 2 1/2". Press the seams toward fabrics A & C. Trim tails.

Set these units aside.

MAKING HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES (2 AT A TIME)

Let's make our last pair of half square triangles using the 2 at a time method.

Step 9: Select the two 3 inch squares (fabric C & D). Draw two lines 1/4 inches from the center diagonal. With right sides together, sew along the two lines.

Step 10: Cut the block in half from corner to corner, between the stitched lines

Step 11: Trim the HST to 2 1/2". Press the seams toward fabric C. Trim tails.

ASSEMBLING THE BASKET QUILT BLOCK

Now that we've made all the HST's, it's time to assemble the block.

All seams are 1/4 inch and remember right sides together.

Use the diagram to layout the pieces in the correct orientation. You will have an extra three half square triangles (one of each color).

Sew together each row. The far right pieces, sew into a vertical strip.

Press the seams alternately. The first row, press right, the second row press left, and so on.

Sew together each row nesting seams as you go.

Sew the vertical strip to the right of the block. Press.

HOW TO MAKE A BASKET QUILT BLOCK

The basket block is made up of two sizes of HST's, squares and rectangles.

First we will make the half square triangles. Then we can assemble the block.

MAKING THE LARGE HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES

Begin by making the large half square triangle that makes up the center of the block.

This method will make two HST's. Save one for your next block or another project.

Step 1: Select the two 7 inch squares.

On the wrong side of the white square, draw two lines. Each line should be 1/4 inch from the center, diagonally.

I use the 1/4 inch marking on my quilting ruler, line it up from corner to corner, then draw along the edge of the ruler. Flip and repeat on the other side.

Stitch along the two lines.

Step 2: Cut the square in half diagonally between the stitching.

Step 3: Trim the square to 6 1/2 inches.

Step 4: Press the seam toward the color fabric and trim the tails.

MAKING THE SMALL HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES (8 AT A TIME)

Now let's make the small half square triangles using the 8 at a time method.

Step 5: Select the two 6" squares. Draw four lines 1/4 inch from the center diagonally in both directions.

Step 6: Sew along the lines.

Step 7: Cut the block in half horizontally, vertically and diagonally in both directions.

Step 8: Trim the HST's to 2 1/2". Press the seams toward the color fabric and trim the tails.

ASSEMBLING THE BASKET QUILT BLOCK

Now that we've made all the HST's, it's time to assemble the block.

All seams are 1/4 inch and remember right sides together.

Use the diagram to layout the pieces in the correct orientation.

Sew together the top row. (The three HST's and the corner square.) Press all seams toward the square.

Sew together the left side. (The three HSt's). Press all seams in one direction.

Sew the HST strip on the left to the large HST. Press toward the large block.

Sew the remaining HST strip to the top of the large HST. Press toward the large block.

Next, sew the border strips.

Sew the bottom rectangle to a small HST. Press.

Then sew the remaining pieces into a strip for the right side. Press the seams toward the white square.

Sew the bottom border to the block. Press the seam toward the large HST.

Sew the right border to the block. Press flat.

Before we can begin sewing, we need to gather all the supplies and fabrics that you'll need.

GATHER SUPPLIES (BASKET PATCH QUILT ALONG PART 1)

This is the first part of our basket patch quilt along. Today we will go over fabric and tools needed.

Next week, you will learn how to make your first basket block.

FABRIC NEEDED FOR THE BASKET PATCH QUILT

To make the throw sized basket quilt, you will need the following:

fat quarter bundle (or scraps)*
2 5/8 yard white or background fabric
5/8 yard sashing fabric
1/8 yard cornerstone fabric
1/2 yard binding fabric
7/8 yard border fabric
3 3/4 yards backing fabric
64" X 80" piece batting

My quilt is made using the Spring Nectar fabric line from Connecting Threads.

*You will use about half of a fat quarter bundle for this quilt. You can use scraps. The largest piece you will need is a seven inch square. You can choose unique fabric for each block, or you can use the same fabric in multiple blocks.

Because of the variety of ways you can choose to make the blocks, exact quantities of fabric for the blocks are not given beyond the background fabric.

TOOLS NEEDED FOR THE BASKET QUILT ALONG

You will need the standard quilting tools for this quilt along. I've listed my favorites below.

thread
rotary cutter / cutting mat / straight edge
sewing machine (This is my new machine that I absolutely love!)
sewing scissors
pencil
iron and wool ironing mat

There are a few specialty rulers that I recommend as well.

There are a LOT of half square triangles in this quilt. I recommend a HST Ruler. Trimming up each HST to the exact size will make assembling each block so much better!

On-point quilts can sometimes get a little wonky. To reduce the risk of this, I designed the triangles at the edge of the quilt to be slightly over sized. That way we can trim them up to be perfectly straight on the edge.

To trim up the corners I used a large 16 1/2" square ruler. For the sides, I used a 24" ruler.

PUMPKIN GOOEY BUTTER CAKE

I'm all about all things pumpkin in the fall. Some of my favorite pumpkin recipes include pumpkin muffins, pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread.

The crust base for this pumpkin dessert starts out with a yellow cake mix.

The filling/top is a pumpkin pie.

You guys, it is just heaven!

Here's the step by step, the recipe is at the bottom of the post.

MAKING THE CRUST

Dump cake mix, egg and melted butter in a bowl.

Mix until combined.

Press into bottom of a greased 9x13 pan.

MAKING THE PUMPKIN FILLING

Start with the softened cream cheese and pumpkin.

Mix until combined.

Add eggs, vanilla, and butter.

Mix to combine.

Add powdered sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Mix well.

Pour on top of cake mixture.

Here you can kind of see the two layers.

Bake at 350 for 50 minutes. Center should be slightly gooey. It should still jiggle when removed. It will set up as it cools.

The top layer turns into a pumpkin pie-like consistency. That paired with the cake batter crust, makes this dessert SO yummy!

The Amish star quilt block is a classic design that uses several patchwork units to create a bold star.

This is a fun block to make because it uses so many different quilting techniques.

This block features half square triangles, flying geese, four patch units and it is assembled as a nine patch unit.

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR QUILTING

This block is made easier when you have a few specialty quilting rulers. Specifically, the HST square up ruler and a flying geese ruler.

If you aren't ready to invest in a flying geese ruler, check out the video for how I trim flying geese using a regular quilting ruler.

Below are the basics you need for quilting.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS FOR A 12" AMISH STAR BLOCK

I love the two tone look of the Amish star. You will need just two colors of fabric. I will refer to the colors I used, but you can switch it up.

Cut 1 EACH red and white - 6" squares
Cut 1 red - 5 1/2" square
Cut 4 white - 3 1/8" squares
Cut 8 red - 2 1/2" squares
Cut 1 white - 4 1/2" square
Cut 4 white - 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" rectangles.

HOW TO MAKE THE AMISH STAR QUILT BLOCK

There are a lot of steps to make this quilt block.

But none of them are hard.

Just follow along one step at a time and you'll have it finished in no time.

MAKING THE HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES

To make the half square triangles we will use the 8 at a time method.

Step 1: Select the two 6" squares. Draw four lines 1/4 inch from the center diagonally in both directions.

Note: I use a quilting ruler, line up the 1/4 inch marking diagonally from corner to corner and draw along the edge of the ruler. Flip and repeat.

Step 2: Sew along the lines.

Step 3: Cut the block in half horizontally, vertically and diagonally in both directions.

Step 4: Trim the HST's to 2 1/2". Press the seams toward the red fabric and trim the tails.

MAKING THE FLYING GEESE

We need four flying geese for the block, so we will use the 4 at a time method.

Step 5: Select the 5 1/2" red square and the four 3 1/8" white squares. Draw two lines on each square. The lines should be 1/4 inch on each side of the center diagonal. (Line up the 1/4 inch marking on a ruler from corner to corner and then draw along the edge of the ruler.)

Step 6: Arrange two of the white squares in opposite corners of the red square. The middles will overlap. Make sure the lines are oriented to create one continuous line from one square to the next.

Step 7: Sew along both lines. Cut the square in half on the diagonal between the two stitched lines.

Step 8: Press open each block to create a "heart" shaped unit.

Step 9: Place the remaining squares in the corner of each block. The drawn lines should be vertical.

Step 10: Stitch along the lines. Then cut between the stitched lines.

Step 11: Press open the units.

Step 12: Trim the flying geese to 2 1/2" X 4 1/2".

A flying geese ruler is helpful. Line up the triangle on the ruler with the triangle on the flying geese. Cut around the three edges.

Step 13: Finish the trim. Flip the unit upside down, line up the edge with the bottom edge of the triangle and trim the excess from the top.

MAKING THE SIDE SQUARE UNITS

This block can be constructed in a 9 patch fashion. To do that, we need to make 9 squares.

This step is creating the squares for the sides of the block.

Step 14: Select the flying geese units and the white rectangles.

Step 15: Sew each rectangle to the flying geese along the bottom of the triangle. Press towards the white fabric.

MAKING THE FOUR PATCH UNITS

Now let's make the corner squares of our block.

Step 16: Select two 2 1/2" red squares and two HST's. Arrange them so that the red squares are opposite each other and the white half of the HST's are pointing inward.

Step 17: Sew the top two squares together, then sew the bottom two squares together. Press toward the red fabric.

Step 18: Sew the two rows together, nesting seams as you go. Press flat.

Repeat with the remaining squares and HST's to create four 4-patch units.

ASSEMBLING THE AMISH STAR

Now that all our square units are made, it's time to assemble the block.

Arrange the pieces in a nine patch formation. The center is a white square. On all four sides, place a flying geese square with the point facing inward.

In each corner place a four patch unit with a solid square pointing towards the middle.

Sew the squares of each row together.

Press the seams on top and bottom rows towards the outside.

Press the seams of the middle row toward the middle.

Sew the rows together, nesting seams as you go.
