Well helloooooo lovelies!

Sorry that I've been AWOL for so long without a single word of where I am and what I'm up to. Last time I posted I told you that I was going into a creative hibernation to work on my new project - which is EXACTLY what I did! - and all of that creative energy was reborn into a brand new blog (and photography business) called The Beautiful Lens.

The Beautiful Lens officially launched on Valentines Day, and I'm loving the shift in direction for me. It's a shift back to my roots pre-kids actually but this mama-thang has been such a big part of the past 12 years of my life that it feels like a whole new world to be focussing on fashion and travel and style again.

So, shall I tell you a little more?

The Beautiful Lens is a women’s lifestyle blog full of creative inspiration in style, food, travel, and living. It is a photographic journal and a way of looking at the world; it is the art of living a beautiful life.

Inspired by the beauty and spirit of the Bohemian Artist, the Gypset Traveller, and the Fashion-Forward Innovator, and set against the backdrop of Byron Bay, the concept is both aspirational and inspirational.

Mainstream life places huge demands on women today. We are expected to work, parent, study, give, clean, fix and nurture, often with little time and concern dedicated to our own intrinsic needs and desires. We are continually asked to buy, to do, to be. We want to be happy, successful and fulfilled but often, it feels like we have lost touch with what true happiness, success and fulfilment looks and feels like.

The Beautiful Lens aspires to be a positive place that helps women to simplify their busy days and focus on creating vibrant, beautiful lives with purpose.

That's taken directly from my about page :) And it's definitely the underpinning premise of the whole thing. But in reality I've been up to my ears in GREAT FOOD and BEAUTIFUL CLOTHES and all THE FUN THINGS that I have absolutely loved! And I haven't yet blogged as much about simplicity as I first imagined and would like too. Luckily a blog is a rolling ocean of a thing and there is plenty of time for everything :) Patience grasshopper-self.

The 3 main focus areas of The Beautiful Lens, as I touched on above, are style, food & travel and I'm going to add a couple of links here to posts in each of those areas for you to have a look at.

A Creative Metamorphosis: The Chrysalis Stage

You may have noticed that things have been quiet here at Adventures of a Rainbow Mama over the past few weeks...

I've gone into my Chrysalis Stage. I'm all Pupa; working on my metamorphosis.

Learning.
Thinking.
Dreaming.
Planning.

Piling my favourite books together and seeking creative inspiration. Asking the big questions. Seeking wisdom. Doing the hard work. And in doing so - recognising that to truly give myself to the creative process I have to release. Let go. Be. And so I am...

You might still find me chattering away on fb, twitter or instagram but the Rainbow Mama blog is going to be quiet over the next little while. My 365 project included. But, hang in there! I think you are going to love what I'm working on... and I can't wait to share it with you; you crazy, beautiful people. Thank you for believing in the adventures thus far. It means so much to me.

And so hard to correlate the surroundings and the story; with the knowledge that someone lost their life in such a tragic way in a place so pure and perfect. Feeling the sadness. And the awe. Mother nature is bigger than all of us. x

It's The Day Of The Dad!

We're spending Father's Day at home this year WHICH IS SUPER LOVELY because life has been too busy recently. Both boys made cards and little presents for T {nawwww #myfullheart } at school and Scouts. I cooked a big breakfast and made a Sago Pudding for morning tea - that we are about to eat! YAY! We are savouring da' simple pleasures.

Yesterday I went and saw the film The Hundred-Foot Journey { T took the boys to Guardians of the Galaxy, and I wasn't sure I could quite handle sitting through it ;) } and it was SUCH a freaking great film. I laughed and cried the whole way through... and know that my kids would have enjoyed it too. So, I might drag everyone back to the cinema today - okay, not exactly DRAG { we are a family of movie-aficionados here!! } but I highly recommend it. It's all about family and good food; the true joys of life. Go and see it people!

Strawberries anyone?

If you're ANYTHING like me, you've been eating them by the bucketful recently. I totally and utterly heart them. The perfectly-imperfect ones from the local farmers market are always the best too - those über-huge supermarket ones can be disappOINTING CAN'T THEY.

Personal Style Blogging: Feeling The Fear And Doing It Anyway

Sooooooo... I've been toying with the idea of doing some personal style posts here on the blog for a while now. But I've been scared.

Scared of getting in front of the camera, number one.
{There is a reason I'm a photographer people! }

Scared of looking silly.
And awkward.
Or just plain weird.

That's all kind of embarrassing to admit; but true.

I know that what we look like does not define us; that clothes and a perfect smile DO NOT maketh the woman, but like most people { I'm guessing } I am super conscious of my flaws. My wonky teeth, the shape of my nose, my smile. Ugh! And let's not even start on our bodies. I'm not a model, but our timelines are full of people who are or who could be, and in turn, our expectations start getting a little warped.

And then there is that whole thing about STYLE. * I * might like something but, seriously, will anyone else?!! Maybe.... maybe. maybe. maybe. It's that little maybe that has spurred me on - to ignore the negative voices in my head and to focus instead on connection. And self-expression. And how much I love this vintage dress!

So I'm putting myself out there - feeling the fear and doing it anyway.

Have a look and please, tell me what you think. Honestly. I know I look like a deer in the headlights in that full photo! With what can only be described as a double chin { just wipe that bit from your memory please lovely people!! } Hahaha. And, yup, I had to run black and white because seeing myself in colour freaks me out ;)

But I do love the detail shots, I think they turned out really well.

I heart dresses - especially now that the weather is warming up. This one is a great mid-season choice; with long sleeves and a sheer fabric. Paired with leggings at the moment because it's still not THAT warm all day long { unless you're lazing around in the sunshine! #dreamy }.

246/365 Harry Potter + Alex Rider | Book Week 2014

We hadn't done "Book Week" before.

But we were aware that it was a pretty big deal { T is a children's author after all } so the boys were pretty disappointed when their new school postponed it due to bad weather a few weeks back. Wahhh.

Yesterday was the day when they finally got to show off their favourite characters. Hooray!

Buster went as Kid Spy Alex Rider from the Anthony Horowitz books and Kingsley dressed up as Harry Potter { this is turning out to be a life-long obsession - are your kids still loving Harry too?! :) }.

There were lots of great costumes; my favourites being all of the girls dressed as Pippi Longstocking with wired plaits! Too cute.

Have you read the love letter I wrote for him yet? Yeah, I write love letters to my dog. Don't you?! ;)

Bossy will be fourteen next month. And we will be partying. Well, we WILL be party-ing but it will be a day late. I just realised that we'll actually be away on his actual birthday { Oct 2 } #whoops so shhhhhhh, don't tell him the date ;) But fourteen is a great age for this old fellow and he deserves to be spoilt.

Bringing Sexy Back: Winged Liner and Hot Red Lips

Last night’s L’Oreal ProBlogger event was a LOT of fun.

Pretty, sparkly, no-little-boys fun! Whooooop! #justwhatineeded :)

I hadn’t been able to work out what the approach of the night would be - so I was thrilled to hear practical advice on applying our everyday AND event makeup. The beautiful duo of Elsa Morgan and Jane from L'Oreal Paris Australia talked us through the "tool kit", while makeup artists worked onstage with models so we could see the work in progress. Lots of blending and contouring and skin perfection!

My personal favourite look { gorgeous skin aside; drink water people!! } was featured; Winged Liner. And apparently I’ve been applying mine back to front - Who knew?!! I always start at the inside of the eye and work outwards - but the TIP is to start with your wing line and work back from there, filling it in as you go. Time will tell if I can work in reverse ;)

Here is a step-by-step:

The other look that I loved was the Bold Red Lip. I was slightly enamoured with Erin-the-makeup-artist's look: superstar RED lips with black rimmed glasses. Such a STUNNING look. It always makes me wish I needed glasses!! That's crazy, right BUT TRUE. Well, I didn’t exactly lose my eyesight but I DID get the red lips! And loved them #heartemojis

I didn’t get any good photos but you can see one here on my instagram { please excuse the dodgy iPhone 4 photography - the camera SUCKS in low light! }

We also got sent home with a very generous pack o-delights. Yay!

Getting My Pretty On With L'Oreal

I'm really looking forward to meeting L'Oreal's makeup artist Elsa Morgan and learning some new tips and tricks.

Turning ProBlogger | The Story So Far!

My name is Amber and I’m going to ProBlogger.

Pro-Wha? you say! I would have asked the same thing a few months ago. The explanation is coming, I promise you. But first, some back-story...

I started blogging in 2008. T says it was earlier than that, and he may be right, but this blog says 2008, so I’m taking that as my guide. Actually, if you don't know, this blog started as Adventures of a Montessori Mama and only changed to its current name about two years later when Buster B starting kindergarten at the local Steiner school and we suddenly weren't so Montessori-niche after all!

And so I blogged. Quietly. Anonymously. For a bunch of years. Over which time we moved to Sydney for a year, moved back home, started homeschooling and then travelled the world!

It has definitely been a fun few years. Some of which got more attention here than others. But it was only last year that I started telling people about my blog. Like my parents. And my in-laws, and my best friends... “Ummm, I have a blog.” Or maybe I didn’t even say that - I cautiously invited a few friends to my page without explanation. And I linked to a few of my posts! To say it was a unadventurous start is an exaggeration. I had loved blogging anonymously. I loved the little community that had found us; Rainbow Mamas in America and Japan and England and other far-flung places. And I loved not feeling self-conscious about what I shared or had to say. But at some point - I knew that something was shifting for me. I realised I was ready to lay myself bare...

Kind of. Lol.

Blogging is confronting. In every way. It’s a vulnerable position to put yourself in but it’s also exciting and cathartic, and I started seeing it as a creative challenge as I became more and more obsessed with returning to my photography roots.

Coming home to Australia at the start of the year, and the boys starting school marked a major turning point for me. I threw myself into my creative projects. And this blog. And I very quickly knew that I didn’t only want to blog... I wanted to BE a blogger. Now, this is obviously all semantics; if you blog you are a blogger. But I had never identified as a “blogger.” Today I have reached the point where I finally do; and the next step is - dadadadaaaa - ProBlogger! Alongside my photography, this is what I’m doing. Professionally. The end. Hahaha - how cool is that :) There are a few big changes in the ranks - namely that I am launching a new blog in January! But don't worry; Adventures of a Rainbow Mama is here to stay - the new blog will be the Yin to it’s Yang. A place for all of the work that doesn’t fit here - and this time around I will be starting it as a fully fledged business. I. Am. So. Excited.

But enough about ME! ;)

I’ll be posting more details of my new project in the next few months, but what I really wanted to talk about was how this newly baptised ProBlogger ended up with the golden tickets in her hand - tickets to ProBlogger 2014.

ProBlogger is the brainchild of Darren Rowse. It’s the name of his wunderkind blog, but it’s also now an annual Australian Bloggers Conference under the slightly clunky { shhhh ;)} title of ProBlogger Training Events. A shiny-shiny event with major blogosphere stars, workshops, partners... and 500 other bloggers attending.

For me, it all started the day I went to the Creative Business Women’s High Tea { do you remember this post? #teacupheaven } and met the amazing Chantelle Ellem of Fat Mum Slim. Chantelle is the über-blogger. Crowned Most Clickable Woman of 2013, she started the popular Photo-a-Day challenge { 13 million photos shared to date! } and released the whimsical Little Moments app while raising raised two little girls - the smallest of which only turned one this past week! Which is all crazy impressive - so it was very cool to discover the woman in front of me was completely approachable and sweet. We chatted; I liked her immediately, and then as we parted ways - she asked me if I was going “to ProBlogger”. I knew of Darren Rowse, but the conference had never crossed my path so the question hit me sideways. Ahhhhhh...

ProBlogger. I went home, and I just couldn’t shake the idea.

I googled it { praise Google } only to discover it was long sold out! Wahhhhh!! By this stage, I had read enough to know that I really NEEDED to be there. What to do?!! It took about a week, but amazingly, through the facebook event page I managed to buy a ticket from someone who couldn't attend :) Poor them. YAY me!

That was about two months ago, and everything has moved AT SPEED since then! I’ve booked accommodation, printed business cards, created a Media Kit, accepted invitations to two niche networking events { details to come - I have to split that into a separate post! Who knew I had so much to say here?! } and connected with a wonderful community that has welcomed me with open arms.

And it all kicks off TOMORROW.

You’ll be hearing more about it I’m sure ;) Hahaha. Possibly til your ears bleed. But right now - I need to finish packing, get over my bone-crumbling nerves and, ummm, sort out my eyebrows.

La Mia Bella Casa Launch Party!

I’m so excited!

Because I'm FINALLY able to show you some of the cool work that I’ve been doing for luxury online homewares brand La Mia Bella Casa this year.

Sarah Arbiter, the mastermind behind the brand, and I met in a funny, almost serendipitous way a few months back { snoop on her blog for more details ;) } and before I knew it I was her official lifestyle photographer! And a wonderful collaboration was born.

The La Mia Bella Casa website went live a few weeks ago now, and I popped up to the Gold Coast for the launch party. A beautiful event, none the less. Sarah has sublime taste and is building an amazing reputation for luxury home furnishings, all of which are now available in her online store.

I’ll be posting photos from both her linen table-wear and bed linen ranges over the next few weeks. And I hope you like them as much as I do!

But until then, champagne anyone...? #yesplease

I've started a small-business course and alongside it, my client work, family life and preparing for ProBlogger { eeeek / YAY! } a few things have slipped from my radar. Okay, AND I'm typing this poolside from Hervey Bay. Hahaha! Yes, we are accompanying T on a work-trip this week. It sounded like a great idea at the time but feels slightly mad right now. Lol. ANYWAY. I'm not complaining one bit; just feeling a little bit crazy!

Akira + Jimmi | This Beautiful Baby Belly

I love that light and magic can come together to permanently record a fleeting moment in time.

I took these photos of Akira and her partner Jimmi at the Amilita launch in Byron a few weeks ago but pulled them from the Amilita post at the last minute... because I realised that they needed to stand alone.

What a fabulous style power-duo they are. Trio even. I have a little feeling that I need to shoot with Akira again in the next few months, so watch this space!
