Adventures of Captain Awesome

So ready.

2011-07-15T12:52:00.000-07:00

I have been talking to the members of my band since I got home, I am so incredibly pumped to get started and start gigging. I cannot wait to get a gig and rock the faces off of the crowd. I have a lot of really good ideas to take older tunes and rock them the hell out.
This last weekend definitely lit a fire to get my band rolling and get out there. I have been so passive the last couple years about making music and gigging. I'm sure part of it had to do with my weight gain and not feeling confident about myself in that aspect. The other part, I know was because I just didn't believe in myself anymore. After my weekend in Chicago, that has 100% changed. I definitely feel ready to take the world by storm and rock the world with my music.
I cannot wait until I can tell all of you when we have our first gig! Hopefully, we will be ready in a few weeks. Even if it's just a short show, I don't care. I just want to play!! I know that my bandmates are ready and excited to get out and jam too. When it's in your blood, it's in your blood and there isn't anything that can replace that feeling that you get on stage! :)
We are having our first practice on Monday and will talk about band names then, I'm sure. I hope we can all agree on something awesome. Not actually "Something Awesome" as a band name but it does kind of fit all of our personalities. Haha. It is a little too close to "Something Corporate" for me but we'll see what the boys have up their sleeves for ideas for band names.
I am just so excited! I can't wait!

What a freakin' whirl wind!

Wow. I am all ready back home. Seems just like last night that I was sitting here telling you all about how freaking nervous I was getting. Well, I know everyone wants details.. So I'll give you the details I can.

We left Wednesday evening, drove all the way to my mom's and got there a little after 4am. We piddled around during the day, ended up doing a little shopping and then my step-dad talked me into going to karaoke Thursday night. We found $1 bottle, domestic beers. Can you say JACKPOT!? Every time I went up to the bar, I grabbed six beers! It was a blast. The owner of the Savannah House (http://savannahouse.com/index.html), sang a duet with me! We sang "Take me or leave me" from RENT. Brought the friggen house down.
Fast forward to Friday. We got up, later than I wanted to - $1 beers will do that to ya. I bawled my eyes out having to leave Jack for the first time overnight and this would be three nights. Got on the Metra, rode to the O'hare transfer, took a shuttle to O'hare, got on the blue line at O'hare, went to Logan Square and started the trek to my brother's house. Prior to leaving my mom's house, my mom told Logan and I that it was only "five or six blocks from Logan Square (the train stop) to Zach's house." Yeah, no. Turns out it's more like 2 miles but if you get lost -- it turns into four. So, we barely get to Zach's by the time we needed to be downtown to meet my friend Steve. Luckily, he drove down (well, technically I think it's up.. but to-may-to/to-mah-to) and came to pick us up. We were going to go to the Outback for dinner but we barely had enough time to get to the hotel - so we ate at the bar. Turns out, to make a blt sandwich it takes a half hour. Anyway, I had to scarf down my food (because Logan and I hadn't eaten anything all day because we hadn't intended on getting lost and not having time to grab lunch with Steve!) before going to the meet and greet.
I get to the meet and greet and there is hardly anyone in there. I found out I was going to get a medal for making it that far in the competition and had my picture taken about a zillion times. I verified my songs, their key and then sat down for about an hour and a half. Luckily, we brought the iPad and Logan and I played scrabble. :) After waiting forever, we finally found out that Carnie Wilson would be one of the judges! (I heard a shriek from someone who would later turn out to be the person I became closest friends with during the competition.) Then a bunch of other mumbo-jumbo about how if we told anyone about the show that we could have a major law suit brought upon us. After all of that, Logan and I tried to get a hold of my friend Nick and his wife Cora but didn't have any luck. We said that we would go to iCream, which is Cora's ice cream shop in Wicker Park, and the only time that we had available to go was that night. So, we hopped on the blue line and headed to Wicker Park.
We got off the train, tried to find iCream ( http://www.facebook.com/pages/ICream-Cafe ) and of course our phones are dying. We decided to just walk down the street until we found it, yes after all ready having walked four miles about three hours earlier our bright idea is to walk MORE. Of course, we can't find it. Why would anything go right for us? We hit up a Walgreens to get a few things that I knew I would need before the competition, wisps, nail polish remover, eyeliner, an eyeliner sharpener, listerine, etc. Then we ask for directions. Turns out, we had all ready passed it. Yay for us. We get there finally and there wasn't much of a line but about two minutes into being there - it's packed. (If you haven't heard of iCream, there is a video on youtube from when it was on the Food Network. Essentially, you pick out what kind of ice cream you want [or frozen yorgurt, organic ice cream, shake or hot pudding], then you pick out the flavor, color and mix-in's. They put it into a regular kitchen-aid mixer, which has a hose for liquid nitrogen to flash freeze your ice cream and they make it right in front of you. Let me tell you, with out a doubt, best ice cream I have EVER had. It was so smooth and creamy, I almost died. After that we wanted to find some Chicago style pizza. We walked around and couldn't find a place that had it, so we settled on New York style pizza -- makes sense, right? We were hungry and it was delicious. Then, we had to make the trek home. I wore my ballet flats, not the ideal shoe for walking miles in the city. We finally made it home around 11ish pm. I was exhausted but definitely ready for the day ahead. I knew that I wouldn't have to sing the next day and so the pressure was off.
We slept in until 8am, got ready and hit the road. As soon as we made it to the House of Blues ( http://www.facebook.com/hobchicago ), I met the most amazing guy - Brandon Hynes. He had a group of friends with him with shirts that said "Brandomonium 2011" and they were amazing too. Logan, my Mom and step-dad sat next to his Grandma and Mom. Apparently, we were meant to be friends. Haha. Anyways, remember earlier when I said I heard someone shriek when they said Carnie Wilson was a judge? It was Brandon. Again, another sign. So, we get inside FINALLY after melting outside forever (because what is a better time to make people show up to a taping than 12:30pm on a hot and humid day? Oh, and in camera ready make-up too.)
Well, we finally got in and it took forever to start the actual singing but once the singers started singing, it stopped being karaoke and started being more like American Idol or America's Got Talent. It was no longer a bunch of drunks up on a stage singing, it was a rip your heart out judgement on your vocals and stage performance. I thought in that moment, after the first performer, "For all of you that thought this was just a shitty karaoke show.. humph! This is the real deal." I clapped, cheered, booed and stood up then sat down more than I ever have in my life. My mom's fingers were cracked from all the clapping!!
We finally got out of The House of Blues around 10pm, we took the train back to the bus stop but we had no idea that the bus didn't run in the evenings. So, we didn't get home until 1130ish. Man, was I livid. I was on so unbelievably hot and annoyed from the long walk. Plus, I had to be up at 5am to be there the next day by 730am. My brother's apartment doesn't have central air. I'm a grown up, I have central air. (Don't worry, when I saw him I told him that he's a grown up and he needs to join the group that has central air. lol) I finally got to sleep around 2am. I had to soak my feet in cold water because they were so sore and swollen from all the walking we had done in the last two days.
We got up, I could barely get my makeup on because I was sweating so badly. My hair looked awful. I was SO mad. We got to the bus, we were afraid we were going to be late for the train. My mom and Zach were going to meet us at the House of Blues. Luckily, they stopped at Dunkin' Donuts and got coffee. My throat was KILLING me and I couldn't stop coughing. Oh, and the real kicker? I knew the week before we left that I was going to get my period while we were in Chicago. I made it through Saturday, no problems. Sunday, I didn't get so lucky. So, not only was I coughing up a storm, my nose was either stuffy or running, my chest was on fire and my throat felt like it was ripped and bleeding -- I was bloated and got my period. THANKS SO MUCH MOTHER NATURE!!
I definitely learned that television isn't all about talent. It isn't all about ratings. It isn't all about filling demographics. It is mostly about ratings, then about filling demographics and then about talent. There was such an unbelievable amount of talent in the room I sat in and I honestly feel so humbled to have been included in that group.
Coming back to Chicago is always such an emotional experience for me. It is where my family started. It is where the most beautiful baby girl was born and placed into my arms. It is where I became a mother. It is where I learned about the importance of need versus want. All I wanted was just to make my kids proud with my performance and talking about my song (since I'm not sure if I can tell you until the show airs without getting sued, I'll wait) just made all of those feelings come to the table. I wanted them to see me as someone who wasn't just their mom but someone who was following her dreams. I have dreamed about being on t.v. and singing since as long as I can remember. My Mom says I was singing since the moment I came out of the womb. I believe that. I don't remember a time in my life when I wasn't singing.
I have always felt I was somewhat talented until this last weekend and now I feel truly blessed. I wasn't on my "a-game" this weekend, I was (and still am) really sick but even still, I feel that it is a major stepping stone for me. My band has our first practice on Monday. I received a HUGE compliment from my guitarist on Tuesday. I was asked to co-sing a jingle for a local business today (details later when I can fully inform you on what it is). It just seems like the ball is fully rolling now. I know that eventually my name will be up in lights, the drive and determination is here more now than ever before.
This is just the beginning for me, I can feel it.

Holy Nervousness Batman.

2011-07-06T08:18:00.000-07:00

It has hit. I am nervous. I have been cleaning and packing all morning and I am ready to throw up. I just want to do well and rock. I'm not really nervous about the competition. I'm worried about crying during my damn song. I talked to my mom and step-dad this morning and they both said they're going to be bawling the entire time through my song. That's comforting. Knowing if I catch a glimpse of them bawling, I will lose it. I have been singing it all morning and I do fine until "you leave home, you move on and you do the best you can.. I got lost in this ol' world and forgot who I am. I thought if I could touch this place or feel it.. This brokenness inside me, might start healing.. Out here it's like I'm someone else.. I thought that maybe I could find myself. If I could just come in, I swear I'll leave.. won't take nothin' but a memory... from the house that built me.."
When I moved to Chicago, that is exactly how I felt. I felt lost and broken. I felt alone and scared. If that song would have came out at that time, I might not have been able to stop crying.
Now, I am going back to Chicago - the place that feels like "home" to me and I'm chasing my dream. It just seems so surreal. First of all, I can't believe I am getting this opportunity. I have wanted this for my entire life. A chance to be on stage, in front of millions. A chance to be on the radio. A chance to sing for a living. I can't remember a time when I didn't want that.
One of the questions on the info sheet that abc sent me was "how would it feel if you won this competition?" How do you put into words of how you would feel if your dream came true? I don't have words for it. I really, really don't. Disbelief. That's about the only word I can come up with that even comes close to how I would feel. I remember being eight years old and wanting nothing more than to be on stage with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men and sing their songs with them. Now, almost 20 years later -- I still want that very same thing. Instead of being on stage with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, I'd like to be on stage with my band and playing my songs. My dream hasn't changed in twenty years. When I tried to come up with any other career besides being a musician, I couldn't figure anything out that would make me as happy. When I am on stage, the feeling I have is indescribable. It feels perfect. I feel like I was meant to be put there. I don't feel that way anywhere else. Well, except when I'm with my kids.
Maybe the best way to explain how I feel is to associate it to the first time you saw your baby, right after you delivered your baby and they bring him/her to you. That feeling of jubilation and pride. Even then, it's not the same feeling but it's close. For me, it is different than those of you mom's that have natural births and get to hold your babies right away. I just got to see my kid's faces before they whisked them away. In that moment, when my eyes met their eyes the world was perfect. There was nothing else that even mattered.
That's what it's like when I'm on stage. My eyes meet the eyes of everyone in the audience and that is all that matters. Giving every bit of me to them. Putting my heart on my sleeve and letting go of all other cares in the world. It's just me and them. For those few minutes, nothing else matters. I want them to feel what I feel. I want them to know what that song means to me, what it feels like in my heart. It sounds crazy but it's the only real way I can describe it.
So, to be able to win and sing - literally - for the world isn't even fathomable to me. The biggest crowd I have preformed for is 2200 people. I sang the national anthem at a muskie's game a few years ago. Now, it's millions, with the possibility of billions of people. It just doesn't even seem real to me. I feel like I am going to wake up tomorrow and this will have all been a really awesome dream.
I am so glad I chose to blog my feelings about all of this. I really talked myself out of my nervousness. I have this stupid looking smile on my face and I am completely content. I know I have some of the best friends in the world because you have all been SO supportive and given me such great words of encouragement and for that, I am eternally thankful. You will probably never know how much it means to me to have your support. I will continue to blog while I am away and post pictures on facebook. I will keep you all updated and "in the know".
Gotta finish packing. :)

Lives for e-mail.

2011-07-03T08:23:00.000-07:00

Prior to the last week, my e-mail was mostly comprised of junk. I'd get a few e-mails each day about Pampered Chef and usually one each day from my "boss" but other than that my inbox would burst at the seams from junk mail. Lately, it has become an entirely different story.

I check my e-mail with excitement now, hoping that I will get another message from one of the producers. Over the weekend, I didn't receive anything from the producers of the show and I didn't check my notifications on my phone as often. I'd just clear out the screen on my phone and after I got several, I would finally check it. Well, I did the same thing starting today. I just cleared out my screen and didn't think anything of it. I accidentally went into my e-mail instead of my facebook and I got an e-mail from one of the producers!

It said, "Below are the songs that you will perform in Chicago. Everyone will perform song 1. Only the top two males and top two femails will perform their song 2. Everyone practice hard and be ready. The competition is intense, grueling, exciting and a huge new experience. Work your vocals to be perfect in pitch and tone. Have fun and give every moment your all. You will have a blast.
Song 1 - House that built me by Miranda Lambert
Song 2 - What's up by 4 Non Blondes

Shit. I should have decided the order before I chose my songs. They didn't give any instruction when we were told to choose our songs. Just choose them. Now I am worried that I chose my songs in the wrong order.
I wanted to show that I had range in my genres as well as vocally. I am starting to flip out now. So much for my post earlier about being unusually calm. Here it is, the freak out. Luckily, I know this song well and can sing it well. I'm just not sure that it is the song I should have chosen to be my first song.
I guess I'll be singing it non-stop until Saturday. That gives me enough time to put my own spin on it, make it more my own and give it some flare. I love Miranda Lambert but this song isn't much in the way of a flashy tune.

I wish we would have had more songs to choose from. There just weren't many that I felt comfortable singing. Here's the list. This is what they gave all the preformers to choose from..

I just didn't feel like many of these were awesome song selections. I dunno. I need to get some cleaning done before my son wakes up.

If you have any suggestions as to what songs you think would have been good choices. Feel free to let me know. :)

Day One.

2011-07-03T03:27:00.000-07:00

This week is going to be huge. The biggest of my life, probably. I am so unbelievably calm. In five days, I will be recorded for a new television show on abc. I have these moments throughout the day when I have a mini-panic attack for about 37 seconds and then immediately I am calm again. This is strange. I guess to explain, I should start at the beginning.

Saturday, June 4th, I entered into what I thought was a karaoke competition. Once I got there, I found out that it was more than just your "garden variety" karaoke competition. This was for all the marbles. A chance to go to Chicago, then Los Angeles and then to Ireland to compete against other karaoke singers. A chance to be on the radio. A chance at my dream. Prior to that Saturday, I had entered into many karaoke competitions and never once won. I thought, if I don't compete and at least give it a shot -- I will always kick myself. So, I drug my husband, my best friend and her boyfriend out. I sang and nailed it. It felt amazing. They told me that my vocals could be enough to win the entire competition, to get me to Ireland BUT they needed to see a little more stage presence. I called my friend Lindsey and asked for advice on a song, you see after I sang the first time I started to get my drink on thinking I was finished with my portion of the competition. Well, we talked it over for a few minutes decided on a song from Rent, the musical. As I was walking in, I knew I couldn't do that particular song but another from Rent was going to be my ticket. I sang, I rocked and about an hour later I found out that I had won. I couldn't believe it. I had finally won a competition and this time it wasn't for some crappy t.v. or a $50 bar tab. It was for a chance at MY DREAM!

A week later, I received a phone call from Damon - the owner of the DJ/Karaoke Business that held the casting call. ABC decided sending 10 people to the Chicago competition was too many, the only wanted five. There was going to be another competition. I was terrified. I had to compete again and against nine other contestants that had all ready won! I had only won a competition one other time and so I figured my luck had run out.

I prepared myself for the inevitable let down but kept my "brave face". I invited a bunch of people out, I bought a new outfit and I was ready to give it my all.

Tuesday night came. It was time for the 10 finalists to battle it out. It was going to be recorded and given to ABC. I had my sister come do my hair, I bought an adorable outfit. I looked good. I kept getting compliments on my weight loss and how amazing I looked. That helped boost my ego but I still wasn't sure I was going to win. I had some of my closest friends and family there to support me. They all kept telling me to calm down, "you have this", the words of encouragement were endless. I just knew that if I could make it tonight, I could probably make it through Chicago too. I just had to make it thought THIS night.

I got to the bar around 8:30pm to warm up. I sang a couple songs, I hadn't yet decided what was going to be the song I would sing that night. Once I sang my three songs, I made my decision. It was going to be "what's up" by the 4 Non Blondes. A guilty pleasure of mine. Everyone that was at the bar seemed to love it, so I figured I'd do this one. The competition was to start between 10pm-10:30pm. It was almost 11pm and no one had mentioned anything about the competition starting. I was a nervous wreck. I kept drinking glass after glass of water, I swear I must have drank an entire gallon.

Finally, the DJ announced that the competition was going to start. My heart jumped up into my throat. What were these nerves?! I NEVER get nervous! I just get up there and do my thing! What was going on with me?! I didn't want to go first. I kept saying quietly to myself, "Please don't make me go first, please don't make me go first, please don't make me go first..". I think I said it close to one hundred times before they announced that "John" would be singing first. I hadn't ever heard this guy before tonight, he was pretty good at the warm up and I was excited to see if he'd flop now. (Come on, anyone who has ever been in any sort of competition doesn't ever want the competition to do well!) He gets up on stage and blows everyone away. He sang a song by Journey and rocked all of our socks off. He was unreal. So, so good. Well, this only made me MORE nervous. I waited for the next name. Not mine. Whew! Dodged that bullet. Didn't want to follow him!

We waited and waited and it seemed like forever before my name was called. I walk up on stage, all my friends and family rushed to be at the front of the stage to support me. Huge sigh of relief when you have a friend that is 6'6", he tends to stand out a little bit. I hear the beginning of my song and this feeling washes over me. Something I haven't ever felt before. It was similar to seeing your baby's face for the first time. You can't quite put words on something that amazing, it's just incredible. I sang with every ounce of my body. The bar was singing along with me, screaming and cheering when I twisted the song to fit me. I finally felt myself letting go and it felt so right. I had never just put my heart in the hands of the audience like I did that night. I stopped being worried about how I looked, how I sounded, what people were thinking.. and let go. Turns out, when your mind isn't racked with a billion other things.. You can sound damn good.

I finished my song and I was trembling. I nailed it. Whether I won or not, I reached a new level within myself. That was going to be enough for me. I grabbed my beer and told everyone to come outside. I needed to breathe and find out how they thought I did. I got stopped by random people in the bar telling me that my performance was amazing. I got stopped by people that I hadn't seen in a long time, they said they didn't recognize me at first because I have lost so much weight but I look amazing and I was definitely going to win tonight. I thought, "Pfffft. What do drunk people know?".

Finally, everyone else was done singing and it was time. I walked to the center of the floor, below the stage and all my friends and family surrounded me. Jenni was holding my hand. Ryan was behind me, holding onto my shoulders. My step-mom, step-sister and friend Sandra were to my left, all holding onto me too. They kept telling me they knew I was going to make it, reassuring me that I had sang amazingly while Damon droned on about some nonsense making us wait for the results. He gave one name, a guy's name. Wasn't me. I didn't start to fret just yet, it was only one name down. He hem-hawed around until we cheered enough to get a second name. This time, it was a girl's name. Not me. I started to freak out just a little bit. He said he was going to say a third name. He said, "JEANNIE!!! You're going to Chicago!!". Jenni grabbed me and told me she was so proud of me. I was in tears. I couldn't believe it. Then everyone around me was congratulating me. I was still in so much shock that I have no idea what anyone was saying. Jenni said we had to take a jagerbomb, so on my way to the bar I text my husband to tell him I won and updated my facebook status. It really happened. I won. On the way to the bar, I got stopped, congratulated, high-fived, hugged and fist-bumped. It was incredible.

It has been almost one week since that night. I am still in disbelief that I am on my way to having my dream come true. This year has been such an incredible journey and it is only half over.

This was day one in the adventures of captain awesome.
