Chef Armand was busy looking at the large rose- colored brick house, letting his gaze slide up, up, up to the tops of the chimneys. He nodded in approval, and with a satisfied grunt he climbed up the stairs to stand behind Bentley, who was at this very moment pushing a heavy key into the lock. The front door appeared very strong and heavy. Bentley gave a turn of the key and pushed the ornately carved wooden door inward.

One by one they entered the great vestibule and Bentley turned to order Alfred to carry in the baggage and to check with him as to which rooms they would need to be taken to. Turning to Mrs. Willoughby, he suggested she show Mary and Sarah to their rooms above-stairs, while he would escort Chef Armand to his kitchen. Chef Armand graciously bent his head in acquiescence and followed the elderly servant, all the while taking in the richness of his surroundings. The hallway was wide and the gleaming wooden floors were covered with thick, beautiful, hand carved rugs, which muffled their footsteps and his shoes almost sank into the surface. This was looking better and better he thought to himself. When the man in front of him stopped before a swinging door, he stepped aside, allowing chef to pass before him. Hearing the chef's quick intake of breath, he smiled, allowing a brief look of smug delight to shine momentarily upon his face. Bentley quickly schooled his expression before walking into the room.

Chef Armand was standing, mouth open, almost awestruck by the completely renovated and sparkling kitchen. In his experience, he had at the best of times a small, cramped place in which to work his magic and order about his staff of servants. Such quarters made for an uncomfortable place to work for hours at a time. Not so here.

Bentley explained that Lady Winter had purchased the house next door. Over the past five months, workman had combined their efforts into expanding the kitchen, pantry, sinks, workspaces and dining areas. And at the back of the house, she had instructed them to create chef a private bedroom chamber and sitting room. He sat down in the chair provided and Bentley suggested he himself would prepare some tea straight away. Chef Armand showed his gratitude by taking Bentley's hand in his giant ones and thanking him.

Bentley went into the kitchen and prepared enough tea for everyone. He, Chef and Mrs. Willoughby would be having a meeting within the hour, to be in readiness for Lady Winter’s arrival.

In the meantime, Mrs. Willoughby and the maids who were following her to the topmost floor, were also taking in the newly refurbished walls, doors, floors, ceilings and furnishings. Everything looked new and clean, bright and shining. They hurried to their floor and let out several ahs in appreciation. The fourth floor was larger, more open and there was even a private sitting room! Plus, each of their bedroom doors was off the main room. Never in their wildest dreams had they supposed they would be housed so lavishly.

Each of the women was counting her lucky stars as Mrs. Willoughby excused herself to freshen up. She told the women to unpack and rest for half an hour, before joining her downstairs in the kitchen. She left them to walk silently down the grand staircase. Everything was in perfect order, and her job was going to be so much easier that she felt as if she were dreaming. The hushed swish of her skirts was the only sound to be heard. There was no noise from the outside Square at all.

Within a few minutes, she had joined Chef Armand and Bentley at the kitchen table. She poured tea for them. They discussed the menus and looked into the pantry, larder, ovens (for there were two), and the other nooks and crannies. They were very excited and agreed on their newly found accord. A friendship of sorts, had been established betwixt them and as the rest of their staff arrived, they joined in, drank some tea and were given a list of all of their duties and the rules by which they must abide. Lady Winter's household would be perfectly run.

-17- Destinations and Lady Laura's Discovery

The next morning was hailed by a very colorful rooster, singing the arrival of the sunrise. The sky was clear and there was not a cloud on the horizon. Everyone sat round the table sharing a full breakfast and talking gaily. Uncle Simon seemed very well and was telling everyone that he was well rested and his behavior indicated he spoke the truth.

They took their leave, and once in the carriage, Alice sat on her beloved mistress’s lap. Lady Winter leaned forward and rubbed Alice's little head. "You have been a very good kitty and a wonderful traveler. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't see it for myself." She smiled that gorgeous and radiant smile that captured many a heart. Lady Laura began wondering if her godfather had anything to do with her Aunt's good mood. She had caught them stealing glances when they believed they unobserved. Inwardly Laura hugged herself. Glad to be so close to London, her come-out imminent and the two people she loved the most beside her, she wanted to pinch herself that her dreams were finally coming true.

Just then Sir Harry rode up to her window. Smiling broadly he asked, "Lady Laura, would you care to ride with me in Hyde Park tomorrow afternoon? The fashionable hour is five o'clock and I will be able to introduce you to some of my friends." She turned to look at her Aunt to see if she approved. Nodding her head, Lady Winter patted her niece's hand. "Yes, Sir Harry, that would be very nice indeed," she replied politely. "Good. I shall call for you at half past four tomorrow." The outing was set and then Sir Sebastian rode up to the window as Sir Harry's horse trotted ahead, "Lady Winter," his deep voice caressed her name. "Would you do me the honor of riding with me tomorrow so we may join in the fun?" he asked. She replied, "But of course. I shall be happy to accompany you my lord." He smiled and a glint lit his eyes. He urged his horse forward and rode ahead of their traveling carriage. Both ladies gazed out the window smiling, as their carriage rolled onward toward London.

Lady Laura was happy about her discovery. Her Aunt and her godfather did like each other. This was going to be very exciting. The season would afford her many happy hours of entertainment and so many new delights. She saw the tops of houses and buildings, in the distance and exclaimed, "Oh, do look Aunt, we have arrived in London!"

-16- Nocturnal Visitors

Since Sir Harry was the closest to the door, he opened it to reveal, of all people, Doctor Edwards. Entering the room, the doctor said, "My dear Lady Winter, I saw your traveling chaise in the courtyard, and I couldn't believe it. I do hope you do not mind my joining you for a few minutes. I wanted to check up on your Uncle Simon." Rushing to explain further, he went on, "I am called to London and will continue my journey tomorrow morning." Espying his patient, the doctor began to approach him.

Lady Winter rose and extended her hand. She shook the doctor's replying, "But of course you should join us. Your arrival could not be more timely. Uncle had an unsettling journey, and we have decided to stay the night here. I would that you see to him and reassure me that we did not leave Brighton too soon." Her worried expression cast a shadow over her countenance.

Doctor Edwards saw to his patient immediately and the men ushered the doctor and Uncle Simon upstairs to his chamber. This left Lord Stanton, Lord Henry and the ladies to spend a little time in conversation. They decided to play whist before they retired. Mrs. Willowby, the landlord’s wife, had already escorted Lady Winter's household staff upstairs, so it was just the four of them in the room.

"I am so pleased the Doctor was passing through and saw our carriage," she exclaimed. I have worried that I rushed our departure instead of letting Uncle rest more. He seemed strong enough, but I must have misread his cheerful disposition for his being more recovered." Lord Stanton patted her hand gently saying, "Lady Winter, you are always putting others before you. All will be well." He smiled and suddenly the evening promised to be more enjoyable than she had hoped.

Sir Harry dealt their cards and for the next hour or so, they laughed, joked and played partners. The men won finally and then it was off to their beds for a good night's rest. They would prepare to leave by nine o'clock, right after breakfast. The gentlemen escorted the ladies upstairs and bade them a good night.

Lady Laura preceded her Aunt into their bedchamber. As their window was open, Alice was lying down inside her little crate. Laura walked to the window and closed it. The late August evening had turned much cooler and this would allow Alice to sleep on her mistress’s bed. Sarah knocked on the door and came into the room. Curtseying, she then helped them to ready themselves for sleep. They thanked her and she went off to her own bed. The ladies settled down into their comfortable feather mattress and soon they were asleep. Alice yawned, stretched and closed her eyes. She purred and soon she was softly snoring into the night air.

Looking up at the bedroom windows of The Wooden Ship, the watcher had decided to climb up to the older man's bedchamber, after the whole household was quiet. Those jewels must be recovered and tonight was perhaps the only chance to check and see if he had the pouch hidden in his belongings. Since they hadn't been found in the front parlor, the old man was the most likely to have picked them up. Tonight was it.

Getting a ladder from the stable had been tricky, as the stable lad was making his nightly rounds and the ladder had to be quietly carried toward the inn. Once it had been lifted and leaned against the brick wall, the nocturnal intruder climbed the rungs as fast as possible. Thankfully the window was open. This was a good sign that fortune was smiling down. Once inside, a quick but silent search produced nothing. The old man was lying on his side and was snoring very loudly. Good enough to muffle the visitor's footsteps.

A continued search through all of his personal belongings proved that the elderly gentleman did not harbor the priceless gems. Climbing out the window and back down the ladder took only a few seconds. The ladder was returned to the stable, so that none would be the wiser. Time to consider who might be in possession of the jewels, for without their recovery, financial doom was imminent.

-15- Repairing Uncle Simon and Alice Acts Naughty

Lady Laura leaned back against her godfather's large chest, inhaling deeply. His scent, mixed with the fragrance of the warm day, the leather of the saddle and the smell of horseflesh, combined to give her a heady sense of adventure. Sighing a bit, she turned toward him asking, "Do you think poor Uncle Simon is going to recover? He is getting on in years and his hands were visibly trembling when they laid him on the coach seat.” She turned to look forward again, admiring the beauty of her surroundings.

Sebastian's deep voice assured her, "Laura, your Uncle Simon is just having a difficult time of it, but I feel certain he is strong enough to pull through this. Hopefully, he will be back on his feet in a few days. Higgins and Alfred will take good care to see that that happens." His strong hands held the reins a little tighter as the wind suddenly blew hard enough to cause the trees to bend forward and startle his horse.

Meanwhile, Laura's aunt was having a hard time keeping little Alice calmed. She had to hold tightly to her leash while holding her soft, squirming body, to keep her from leaping out the window. Apparently, she wanted to ride on Laura's lap atop the horse. Now that would be a sight, her aunt thought. "Please relax Alice," she admonished gently. "Laura will hold you as soon as we reach the posting house. Looking out the window, she could see the top of the roof coming into view. "See there Alice, we shall arrive in just a few minutes and you will be reunited with Laura again." Alice let out a tiny mew and settled down on the skirt of Aunt Minerva's dress. She looked wistfully at the tops of the trees passing in view of the opened window.

Having reached the posting house, the entourage was made heartily welcome by the owner, and their horses were taken to the stables. Everyone entered the establishment, which was called, The Wooden Ship, and was quietly taken to a private dining room. Once there Uncle Simon was placed on the sofa and a cool cloth was laid on his forehead. "You know, I am feeling much better already," he said. In fact, his coloring was a testament to his words. There was a creamy hue with a little pink in his cheeks. Much better than the deathly white and pasty pallor he had worn a short time before. Seeing him thus, sighs were heard audibly all around the room.

Alice rubbed herself against Lady Laura's skirts, whereupon Laura scooped her up and twirled her three times in a circle. Noisily she dropped tiny kisses on the little cat's head, and Alice went along with their game by acting as though she wanted to escape. To everyone’s pleasure, Alice leaned against her mistress’s neck and licked her cheek. A laughing Laura was so radiant that those present could only stare at the young lady's happiness.

Walking over to Uncle Simon, Lady Laura kissed his thinning hair and told him, "There. Now you will be well, and we shall go on to London and prepare for all of our outings." She smiled a brilliant smile and the old man basked in the warm glow. "Aye, Laura, I will take you about in grand style," he promised.

Sebastian was looking at Lady Winter unabashedly, as her attention was on the owner's wife and deciding upon their refreshments. When asked if there were enough rooms for them to stay the night, the woman assured her they could easily be accommodated. She then turned to Uncle Simon, asking him if he wanted to rest here and they would continue tomorrow. He agreed and Lady Winter asked the woman to prepare bedchambers for them, as they had decided to stay over.

They all dined in the private parlor, with the servants eating at a separate table. This was a bit of a holiday for them and a surprise to boot. One could hear the relaxed laughs and easy conversation enjoyed by all. Lady Winter was thankful her Uncle was looking well enough to partake of the roasted chicken and fresh vegetables. They were getting ready to retire when there came a knock upon the parlor room door. Everyone turned to see who was knocking.

Glorious Roses

		Glorious Roses,
originally uploaded by Theresa111.
During this long interim I have been taking care of everyday matters. The carriage had abruptly stopped and Higgins immediately awoke from the little nap he had been having. He saw that his master looked drawn and turning toward Lady Winter suggested, “Lady Winter, your Uncle does not appear strong enough to continue much further." Turning back to the older man, who was now emitting small sounds of someone who did not feel very well, opened the carriage door and assisted him to step outside. Almost at once, the older man bent over and relieved himself of what he had eaten earlier. Pale and shaken, he allowed Higgins to assist him to sit down on a large tree trunk.

Observing this, Lord Stanton rode his horse close to the carriage. Upon seeing the distress upon the faces of the ladies said, “Lady Winter, there is a posting inn a little further in the town of Crawley. We can put up there for the night and send the servants ahead with the baggage carriages.”

“Yes. That would be the wise thing to do,” she agreed. “I leave it all in your capable hands Lord Stanton.” She sat back and held Laura’s hand in hers. “We will stop ahead and give Uncle Simon time to rest and recover himself. Sometimes when there has been a head injury, it upsets the stomach,” she explained. Although she wondered to herself if she sounded as convincing as she tried to. It would not do to get her niece upset, too.

Lady Laura turned her head to look out the window, just in time to see her Uncle become ill once again. “Oh Aunt Minerva, he is retching once more. Poor, poor Uncle Simon. I hope he will feel better soon,” she said.

By this time, Horton, Sir Harry and Lord Stanton were standing close by the elderly gentleman. He seemed to be getting some color back into his cheeks and he was not shaking very much anymore. “It might be better if your Uncle could stretch out across the seat and Higgins can keep a bucket close by, just in case he becomes ill again,” he confided in the ladies. "Laura, would you be willing to ride up before me on my horse?”

“But of course Godfather,” she readily agreed. Sir Harry assisted her to alight and as soon as Uncle Simon was settled back in the carriage, Lord Stanton mounted his horse. Sir Harry lifted Laura up to be positioned in front of Lord Stanton, across the saddle. She arranged her skirts while Sir Harry mounted his horse. Once more the entourage was en route.

The lone rider, who had been following in their wake, kept a discreet distance. "This is most fortunate indeed. There is a good possibility that tonight I can recover what is mine." The words were softly spoken and a pleased expression flickered over the rider's face.

-13- Trunks Packed and Ready To Go

The household was up before the rooster’s crow, and sunrise saw Laura and her Aunt dressed and seated at the breakfast table. Soon after they finished eating, Laura went to find Alice. She took her cat into her room and placed her into a large crate, to keep her from escaping through the window. Everyone, including Alice, would travel to London.

Uncle Simon was settled on the sofa, reading the morning paper, whilst Higgins sat on a chair nearby, in case his master needed anything. He had been with the elderly gentleman for almost fifteen years. Higgins was quiet, efficient, and loyal, plus he held a sincere affection for his master. His duties completed, their trunks packed, he only needed to help the older man climb into the carriage at departure time.

Lady Winter spoke with the entire staff in the dining room. Mrs. Willoughby and Chef Armand assured her ladyship that all personal belongings had been organized and packed into trunks and boxes. Even as they spoke, Alfred already had some of the stable lads loading the baggage carriages. All would be ready to travel within two hours. Everything was going according to plan. Feeling relieved, Lady Winter thanked them and then retired to her room. Once there she double-checked her own personal belongings, especially the ones she would keep close by her, in her carriage. The night before, she had sewn the leather pouch inside her deep pocket, so the gems were quite secure.

By ten o’clock Lord Stanton’s luxurious traveling carriage had arrived. Following close behind were Sir Harry and Lord Stanton. They both helped Higgins in getting Uncle Simon settled into the chaise, and then Higgins took the seat beside him. Next Lady Laura and Lady Winter were assisted into the carriage and took their seats opposite their Uncle and his man.

Alice was sitting on Laura’s lap wearing her traveling harness. It surrounded her small frame comfortably. There was a thin leash attached to it. Alice was used to wearing this apparatus for traveling with her mistress. Her ears were perked up and she was very interested in everything about her. Laura gave the little cat a treat to encourage good behavior and Alice licked her lips appreciatively.

The servants were loaded into the household’s carriage, directly in front of the two baggage carriages, which were very full. Everyone watched as Bentley closed the front door, turned the key and then handed it to Lady Winter. The butler climbed aboard the second carriage and Lord Stanton signaled to the drivers. Their journey was about to begin.

They were finally on their way and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Some were feeling they could finally relax, while others were quite excited at the prospect of leaving the seaside town and traveling to the great city of London.

Laura was thrilled to be a young woman on the threshold of her entry into society. There were plans to be made. Next week she was to be outfitted with an entirely new wardrobe, by the finest French dressmaker in the city. She dreamed about the people she would meet and the prospect of her very first ball. How exciting it all was, she thought. So intense were these feelings, that she almost hugged herself. The long years of boarding school were almost forgotten.

“Do you agree Laura?” her Uncle asked pointedly. His stare was fixed upon her dreamy features.

“Oh! I am sorry, I was woolgathering.” She admitted. “Please forgive me, what were you speaking of?” she asked.

“Are you excited about your come out Laura?” he asked gruffly. Meeting his inquisitive expression, she admitted that she was. They discussed places to sightsee and he even promised to accompany her for a drive through Hyde Park. “Would next Thursday be a good day?” he asked.

“That would be wonderful, Uncle Simon,” she accepted happily. Her rosy cheeks were a perfect compliment to the light yellow traveling dress she wore. She always looked entrancing, so much so, that the old man thought the young girl looked just like her mother did at the same age. Pity, he thought, that she had died so tragically. He was going to make sure he did his part in showing his grand niece a wonderful time in London.

The entourage made good time, with only a few stops, in order to refresh and change their horses before reaching the mid-way point. Lord Stanton and Sir Harry rode their own horses alongside the conveyance holding the ladies and Uncle Simon.

Sir Harry lived in London with his parents. His father was the Earl of Chester. He had an elder sister who had married last year, while his youngest sister was still at school. His parents believed he would settle down soon enough, so they were glad to have him about. There was no rush for a new heir. His parents were only in their mid-thirties and enjoyed perfect health. It was nice not to feel the kind of pressure to marry which so many of his friends did.

He glanced at Lady Laura’s profile, and although he could not help being attracted to her, he was getting the impression lately that she did not return his affection. Oh, she liked him well enough, as she might a brother, and for this reason he was determined to try just being her friend. He was ready to offer her friendship and an escort while she was in London. He resolved not to wear his heart on his sleeve, and having made this decision, he smiled to himself as he rode in companionable silence, alongside her chaise.

Meanwhile, Lord Stanton was taking in the beautiful scenery of his beloved England. My, but it was good to be home again. The waning summer day was pleasant and mild for late August. The trees were lush and green. It was still too early for the leaves to change color, he especially loved seeing their flaming glory.

Keeping his horse slightly behind the chaise afforded him an unrestricted view of Lady Winter. For all of her twenty-seven years, she didn’t look a day over twenty. He took his time admiring her flawless and elegant beauty. When he had found out that she had never married, he felt a deep satisfaction in that news. Since his return, he caught himself thinking about her all of the time, a pastime he had given up years before. No one could compare to her and he was beginning to wonder what he was going to do about this constant barrage of emotions he was experiencing. Continuing this train of thought, he rode deep in thought, alongside her chaise.

Uncle Simon was thinking about the young man’s visit the other day. That silver box and the story he shared, and then his own fall. The trouble was he was not sure if he fell of his own accord. Right now, he was confused about that afternoon. When they reached London, he would have another word with Lord Stanton. The old man snuggled down in his comfortable seat, and the sway of the carriage soon lulled him to sleep, comforted by the presence of those about him.

Lady Winter was not unaware of the long stares she was receiving through the carriage window. How could she not feel the intensity of Lord Stanton’s presence? Every inch of her being was aware of him. She needed to collect herself, to keep her reserve and pretend that she was unconcerned. Closing her eyes she soon relaxed enough to take a little nap. Smiling to herself, she dozed off, only to dream of the very man she was trying to ignore.

-12- Shopping and A Chance Encounter

The next day Lady Laura, accompanied by her maid, walked a short distance to browse the friendly shops of Brighton. It was a glorious day. The sun peeped out occasionally from behind the fluffy white clouds. The birds were singing and the ocean breeze cooled their outing. Brighton was such a delightful town, with colorful displays by vendors, the ocean’s sparkling surf and the relaxing ambiance, which was the main reason so many flocked to the seaside.

They both carried parasols to protect their complexions and to deflect some of the heat from the sun. Sarah walked directly behind her young mistress, as was her wont. They were just about to enter a modiste's shop when a man bumped right into Laura. “Oh!” she cried out, just as his strong hands shot out to grab her arms, keeping her from toppling over.

“I am so sorry, Miss,” the young man stammered, “I did not see you until it was too late." Releasing her immediately, he stepped backward, placing a discreet distance between them.

Sarah began righting Laura’s bonnet, which had been knocked askew. Now fully recovered, Laura smiled shakily saying, “That is quite all right, Sir. I am now recovered, although it was rather a shock at first." Then she looked at the man, tilting her head back, because he was well over six feet tall. When her eyes met his, she felt as if all of the breath had been knocked out of her. Standing before her was the most handsome man she had ever beheld. Black hair, worn not stylishly, but long, reached his broad shoulders. It was cut shorter about his face and enhanced his high cheekbones, dark brows, and piercingly blue eyes. He possessed a mouth that curved into a smile displaying full, sensual lips, and brilliant white teeth. There was a moment of silence while he, too, took in her perfect beauty. They were as if spellbound.

Sarah came to the rescue by speaking up in an unnaturally loud voice, “Miss, we should be on our way,” she urged the young girl, tugging on her arm. Laura came to her senses, smiled uncertainly and agreed. “Yes, we must be on our way. Pray excuse us sir,” she said as she made as if to pass by him.

But he delayed their progress by insisting, “I apologize once more. It was entirely my fault in not checking the walkway before exiting the shop. I should wish to make myself known to you. My name is Sir Robert Rothschild, of Berkshire Folly, and I have recently arrived from New York. There was that engaging smile of his again. “May I please be so bold as to ask your name?” he inquired smoothly.

Laura was entirely enchanted, almost as though a spell had been cast upon her. Once again Sarah came to her rescue, and ushering her mistress into the shop answered for her. “Her name Sir Robert, is Lady Laura Winter. Now, if you will be so kind as to allow us to enter the shop, we will bid you farewell.” Laura was so surprised by her maid's taking control of the situation, that she meekly allowed Sarah to move her through the doorway. Sarah eyed Sir Robert with a suspicious glare, and in moments her charge was safely out of the man’s reach. She attempted to distract Laura by pointing her in the direction of the ribbons and laces. Noticing Laura’s dreamy expression, and since no harm was done, she quietly chose things for Laura to inspect.

Outside the shop, Sir Robert Rothschild mentally shook himself, whistled under his breath and tried to recall where he had intended to go before all of this happened. He wondered how long it would be before their paths would cross again, for he was entranced and believed he had just fallen in love. This would indeed complicate matters he thought. He had returned to England to travel to London on a pressing matter. Love did not fit into his plans. It might be better had he not bumped into the alluring beauty just now. He did not need complications.

Confirming his resolve, he set out to find the gentleman, with whom he had become friends on board ship, while crossing the Atlantic. He walked back toward his hotel to ask the front desk clerk for the room number of Lord Sebastian Stanton.

-11- A Newly Laid Plan

Early the next morning, Lady Winter was told that Higgins, her Uncle's man, had arrived at first light. Higgins was presently tending to her Uncle. Soon he would be ready to receive visitors. Glancing at the Ormolu clock on the bedside table, she saw it was only seven thirty. Plenty of time to ask about the ownership of the treasure trove that Laura had found, the previous evening. The Doctor was due to arrive by nine o'clock, and she hoped for good news.

Sarah assisted her to dress and then went to see to Laura. She and Lady Winter left the bedchamber together. Sarah walked toward the back of the house and Lady Winter toward the front. She knocked gently and the door was immediately opened, by a very correct, Higgins. He bowed and greeted her with a hushed, "Good morning,My Lady," and then he bade her enter.

Her spirits lifted as soon as she set eyes on the man sitting up in the large bed. She noticed the color had returned to his cheeks and the bandage surrounding the top of his forehead, was freshly changed. "Come in, my dear," Uncle Simon invited. He patted the top of the covers closest to him.

Walking forward, she clasped his hands in hers saying, "You do look much improved." She smiled and he responded by telling her, "The last thing that I recall was hearing a noise. I got up to see what it was and I must have slipped, lost my footing, and down I went." His look told her he was questioning his own recollection and so she quickly reassured him, by patting his hand.

"Just relax and rest yourself. As soon as you feel strong enough we will travel forth to London." She correctly guessed that he felt guilty for having delayed their trip. "I will not hear one word," she gainsaid him, by holding up her hand. "You are too important to me to leave without you," she stated emphatically, but then in a gentler tone she added, "Just please get better. That is all I ask."

Bending over, she laid a kiss on the older man's brow, then turned to go. Remembering her other reason for visiting, she turned back around and asked. "Uncle Simon, do you own a brown leather pouch?" A perplexed look crossed his weathered features. "No. I do not," he replied.

Lady Winter smiled and told Higgins he should ring for her Uncle's breakfast, as the Doctor would be arriving by nine o'clock. Leaving the room she walked down the hall to Laura's bedroom door. She tapped lightly, and the door was opened by a flushed Sarah, who had been busy packing a trunk. Bobbing a curtsy, she told Lady Winter that her niece had gone downstairs already. After thanking Sarah, Lady Winter headed for the staircase.

Holding her skirts to the side, so she would not trip, she descended the stairs and then followed the hallway around toward the breakfast room. It was a bright, sunny day with rays of sunlight filtering through the windows. They fell upon her niece to bathe her in their golden glow. She noticed that Laura had waited for her to arrive, before beginning. Going to the head of the table she seated herself and Laura signaled to Mary to begin service.

They each sipped a cup of fragrant tea and looked at the morning paper, until breakfast was served. They enjoyed a companionable silence for a few minutes, before Laura broached the subject uppermost in her mind. "How is Uncle Simon this morning and is the pouch his?" she asked expectantly. Lady Winter smiled and did not keep her in suspense any longer. "Yes, he is much better, and no, he does not own the pouch," her Aunt told her. Laura's hands flew to cover her mouth and her eyes were wide with excitement. "Well then, that must mean that it was dropped by someone else. But who?" she asked looking speculatively at the woman across from her.

Laura spread her hands and declared, "It must have been one of your visitors Aunt." Following along this train of thought, she stated, "Not for one minute, do I believe it belongs to one of the servants." Lady Winter agreed. "No, nor do I." They continued in this manner, going over who had been in the room over the past ten days or so. Laura sent Alfred to bring writing paper, quill and an ink pot. She proceeded to write down a list of suspects. With the exception of the three gentlemen who arrived yesterday, the list bore only names of their female friends and acquaintances.

"I cannot imagine any one of these women carrying around such a masculine pouch, let alone such valuable contents," Lady Winter proclaimed. Setting down her silverware, she looked at her niece saying, "Laura it seems you agree with me." Laura nodded her head, confirming her Aunt's words.

Laura decided to share the information about the man she had seen in the rose garden yesterday morning. Since Uncle Simon had not mentioned the man, perhaps the stranger had been in the drawing room prior to being taken to the rose garden, to meet with their Uncle. "It is plausible that he might have dropped the pouch as he stood up," she surmised. Lady Winter agreed that when their Uncle was feeling himself again, they would question him about his visitor. Now they both wanted to know who the stranger was. Laura recalled how handsome he was. Yes, she really wanted to find out his identity.

Entering the room, Bentley bowed and told them the Doctor had arrived and was now upstairs preparing to examine their Uncle. As he was about to exit, however, Alfred came in to announce Lord Stanton's arrival. Lady Winter told him she and Laura would join their guest in the drawing room shortly.

A few minutes later, true to her word, the ladies arrived to find Lord Stanton, dressed to perfection, standing with his back to the fireplace. He looked resplendent in his coat of superfine cloth, a deep blue, with gold buttons. His trousers were a buff color and they enhanced his long powerful thighs. His cravat was a brilliant white and was intricately tied. His dark good looks would make any woman's heart beat a little faster. He smiled at his goddaughter and when she reached him, she stood on her tiptoes to plant a small kiss upon his freshly shaved cheek. Looking over her head, his piercing eyes took in the entire vision of the beauty taking her seat upon the divan. "Pray be seated Lord Stanton. How are you faring this morning?" Lady Winter inquired politely.

"Good morning, Lady Winter. Good morning, Laura." His deep voice caressed the greeting. Taking his seat, he crossed his legs in their Hessian boots, which were polished to a high gloss. He appeared very much at ease, and his wide smile belied his increased heartbeat. He turned his attention to the young girl who told him, "It is so good to be able to see you again." Her statement rang true, and the sincere expression she wore reminded him that she must have been lonely, growing up without her parents. He and Lady Winter had promised to make it up to her. Truthfully, he too was looking forward to their departure.

He extended a graceful compliment to Lady Winter and as he did so, he continued to take in every inch of her rose colored gown, edged with creamy lace. It was a perfect complement to her smooth complexion. She was so beautiful, it almost took his breath away. Over the past ten years, he had tried to put her from his mind. He felt the stirrings of desire in his loins, so he moved his arm to hide the fact. Changing the subject, he looked at Lady Laura and quizzed her. "Tell me minx, have you discovered the owner of your treasure yet?" His inquiry brought the needed distraction.

"Godfather, Aunt and I made a list of visitors, but they are all female," she said disappointedly. Then she imparted the news about the handsome stranger, who met with their Uncle. Since he already knew about that visit, he began wondering if there might have been someone else involved.

Doctor Edwards joined the group. Addressing Lady Winter he announced, "Your Uncle is very robust for his age, and surprisingly resilient. He should be up to traveling by the day after tomorrow."

They were all happy to receive these glad tidings and thanked the man for helping their relative. His parting words were to be sure to call him right away, if he were needed. He left to go make his morning rounds, whistling as he went. Alice, upon hearing the happy sound, jumped onto the window sill to watch his retreat down the brick walkway. She preened herself then went over to sit on her mistress' skirts.

"So it seems we shall depart on Thursday, unless Uncle Simon has a relapse," Lady Winter stated. She stood, mindful of so many things to claim her immediate attention. Lord Stanton took his leave. Then Lady Winter went to address the staff, leaving Laura to spend some time with Alice.

Laura petted her sweet little cat. She hugged her, demanding she only drink water from now on. Alice agreed by saying, "Meow." The pair of them were a sight to behold, and the stranger looking through the window at them, smiled at the thought of Laura's beauty. She looked so innocent and untouched. Slipping away unseen, the stranger took himself off. As he walked away he thought aloud, "I must think. They are to leave for London on Thursday ... I must lay a new plan."

-10- Sparkles and Dreams

If Sir Harry was plucking up the courage for that walk in the rose garden, it was soon forgotten. Lady Laura returned to the table, her eyes shining, her expression animated, and her breath coming quickly. As she approached her godfather she declared, "Oh, just look what I have discovered." She held out her hand and placed the pouch on the table before him.

Lord Stanton looked inquiringly at his goddaughter, a question in his eyes. "What have we here Laura?" he asked. His long fingers reached to lift the small pouch. It was not heavy.

"Go ahead," urged Laura excitedly. She moved closer saying, "You will never guess what is inside." Lord Stanton complied by pulling the strings to open the vessel, and emptied the contents into the palm of his left hand.

Lady Winter had risen to walk over and stand on the other side of his chair. Her expressive eyes became even wider. An "Ah," escaped her lips. At the same instant, Sir Harry let out a whoop, exclaiming, "Good lord, Stanton, look at those beauties!"

An apt description, as they were indeed sparkling beauties. Sitting in the palm of his hand, Lord Stanton held seven large, perfectly formed pearls. There were also three times as many rubies, emeralds, sapphires and diamonds. He moved his hand slightly, allowing the gems to glitter in the candle light.

An appreciative whistle escaped his lips. "Where, might I ask, did you find these, my dear girl?" he asked pointedly, looking up at her. He lifted his hand, offering them so the others could examine the gems for themselves.

A radiant Laura explained, "The leather pouch was lying on the floor, beneath the tea table. Not far from where we found Uncle Simon today." She continued, "Mayhap they belong to him."

Her aunt said, "Well, it will have to wait until tomorrow." She was not about to have anyone invading his room tonight. There had been way too much excitement for the elderly man today. Her authority was enough for them to agree with her decision.

They handed the gems back to Lord Stanton, and he secured them inside the soft leather pouch. Turning toward the beautiful woman who stood beside him, he handed the precious parcel to Lady Winter. In turn, she slipped it into her pocket, which was cleverly hidden by the side-seam of her gown. "Tomorrow after Doctor has attended him, will be soon enough to find out. I shall discreetly inquire, in a round about way, if he is even aware of the gems' existence," she declared.

Lord Stanton rose from the table and she inquired, "Do you not think it strange for Uncle to travel about with such a valuable possession?" Her gaze spoke volumes and she tensed her shoulders. She felt a flush of warmth on her skin whenever he was near, so she schooled her features and stood taller, raising her head slightly.

Looking down into her upturned face, he replied, "Yes, I do. But tomorrow is soon enough to get your answers." Taking her hand in his, he raised her fingers, brushing them ever so softly with the slightest touch of his lips. "Dearest lady, thank you for the delicious dinner. It is late and time we took our leave," he smiled warmly.

Walking toward the door, he turned back to the young man, raised his eyebrows, and drawled, "Coming Harry?" Harry looked longingly at Laura then stammered his good-byes. They left the house and the ladies decided to adjourn for the night.

A few hours later, the entire household settled down for the night. A warm ocean breeze flowed through the windows, filling the house with the fresh smell of the sea. Besides the ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer, Alice's soft snores were the only other sounds to be heard.

The main floor was quiet and peaceful, with everyone upstairs, sleeping soundly, all snug in their beds. None of them was any the wiser, as the shadowy figure felt along the glossy floor boards and carpeting, searching for what had been dropped earlier that afternoon. Furtively two hands scanned the area, feeling around the furniture, anxious fingers touching smooth floors and soft carpet, nothing more.

"Damn and blast," was the softly-uttered expletive. Not finding the leather pouch, eyes were turned toward the stairs leading up to where the old man slept. Deciding it was too risky, that it would never do, the intruder left the room by way of the side window - a silent retreat.

Normally, little Alice would have been awake, enjoying her nightly romps through the seaside home. She might even have seen the intruder and alerted Alfred. She was quite fond of the tall footman, but not tonight. Alice stretched and then repositioned herself on the soft sofa cushion. She continued her drunken dream of nocturnal delights, her slight body twitching, while she chased her imaginary quarry.

-9- Truth Be Told

Lady Winter and Laura reached the top of the stairs at the same time. They embraced and Laura told her aunt, "Do not worry, Uncle Simon will be all right. I heard his voice just now, as I passed his chambers. I believe my godfather is inside with him." Reassured by her niece's smile, her aunt led the way to the parlor. As they entered the room, Sir Harry stood up saying, "The doctor said your uncle was asking for Lord Stanton. He has been with him this past quarter hour." He glanced at Lady Winter, but clearly, he only had eyes for the young girl before him.

Offering an arm to each lady, he escorted them to the sofa. After the ladies took their seat, he settled into a chair, crossing his long legs, his boots reflecting the candles' glow. They discussed the accident and wondered aloud if they should postpone their departure for London. Her aunt said she was unsure if Uncle Simon would be allowed to travel.

Uncle Simon had also been included in Lady Winter's invitation to spend the upcoming season in the London townhouse. It had been rented for six months. The leasing agent had told her that it was very large, and would easily accommodate a big family.

Lady Winter shrugged her shoulders stating the obvious, "I am certain the good doctor will tell us his decision, just as soon as he joins us."

They did not have long to wait. Both Lord Stanton and Dr. Edwards entered the sitting room. The doctor outlined the care their relative would need. "Lady Winter, your uncle requires rest. I was told his man would be arriving tomorrow. Once I have examined him in the morning, I shall let you know my findings." He turned toward Lord Stanton and continued, "I really rather doubt he will be up to traveling tomorrow, but perhaps the day after. It all depends on his progress."

Bentley appeared in the doorway to announce that dinner was ready. The doctor politely refused Lady Winter's invitation to dine, because he was needed elsewhere. As he was leaving the house, he promised to return at once if needed. Otherwise, he would be back by nine o'clock tomorrow morning.

The men offered the ladies escort and they all walked into the dining room. Once seated, the servants served them Chef's delicious supper. They discreetly stood by and performed their duties beautifully.

The diners were unusually quiet, each lost in thought about Uncle Simon and their impending travel plans. Lady Laura thought again about the stranger she saw speaking with her uncle. Lord Stanton pondered the words the injured man had imparted. Lady Winter watched the expressions on Lord Stanton's face. Sir Harry seemed to be enjoying the food, all the while trying to muster the courage to ask Lady Laura to join him for a walk after dinner.

Upstairs, Alice stretched, yawned and jumped down from the bed. Noticing how wobbly her legs felt, she shook her head quickly, as if to clear her thoughts. The small cat walked slowly downstairs, occasionally bumping into the walls, table legs and anything directly in her path. Finding her way to where her mistress was sitting, she rubbed against Laura's leg emitting a faint meow, and Laura bent down to pet her.

"Alice, you're finally awake," she said. Alice walked over to stand beside the serving table, bumping into Alfred's leg and sitting down abruptly. Laura was out of her chair in an instant, scooping her up and telling her aunt, "I do not know what in the world is the matter with her. When I tried to rouse her earlier she did not respond normally. I do hope she is not ill," she said worriedly, a concerned look shadowing her face.

Just then, Chef Armand entered the room to ask Lady Winter how she found the dinner. As he noticed the cat, he and Alice exchanged telling looks. "Lady Laura," the Chef confessed, "Truth be told I caught your little Alice drinking from a cup of milk to which I had added brandy. She had consumed quite a lot before I could take it away from her. No doubt, she slept a long time." Everyone burst out laughing and the amused Chef returned to his kitchen to recount the tale to the household staff.

"Oh, Alice!" exclaimed a relieved Laura. "What will you get into next?" she asked, giving her pet a hug and kiss. Alice, looked smug and promptly fell asleep. A smiling Laura carried her to the drawing room. Laying Alice on the settee she covered her small body with a light shawl. Alice's purrs turned into loud snores and Laura sat beside her, stroking her pet's head. She was so glad nothing was wrong. Alice was very naughty drinking milk laced with brandy.

Standing up to rejoin the others, she noticed an object on the floor. Bending down, she picked up a small dark brown leather pouch. Looking inside, her mouth formed an Oh, for she was surprised by what she found.

-8- Good News and Finding Alice

With just the ticking of the hands of the grandfather clock, as they moved from minute to minute, shadows cast their long impressions of the waning afternoon on the walls of the foyer. Tea had been duly drunk, and the tray removed. Everyone waited as the minutes turned into an hour.

In the meantime, Mrs. Willoughby voiced Chef Armand's inquiry, if he could prepare something special for Lady Winter and her guests. Looking relieved to be thinking of something normal, she agreed to whatever Chef wanted to fix. The man could always tempt her appetite. The very competent housekeeper politely thanked her mistress, curtsied and returned to the kitchen. Once there, she imparted her ladyship's message telling the chef, that tonight, he had carte blanche`. He began supper preparations at once.

The drawing room door slowly opened and Dr. Edwards made his way over to Lady Winter. As she stood up, he said, "All is well and he will fully recover." There was an audible sigh from those present. "But I should like him to have a meal of soup and tea." Seeing everyone's relief he continued, "I have instructed Alfred to make a stretcher. He, along with Lord Stanton, will carry your uncle above stairs.

Doctor Edwards looked around at the young people, saying with emphasis, "He needs to be kept quiet. At present, he is confused and questions will only upset him. I have prepared a light sedative for any discomfort. Because of his head injury, he should not be allowed to sleep for at least three hours." Making sure they all understood his instructions, he moved back into the drawing room, just as Lord Stanton was leaving the room, and closed the door behind him.

He took Lady Winter's hand in his, and assured her there was nothing to worry about. Turning toward Sir Harry, he added that they should prepare to leave, as soon as they got the injured man upstairs. His horses had been standing too long. But Laura told him, "Your driver left word over an hour ago, that he was taking the team and carriage to the stables. He requested that you send word, as to when he should return." Horton would be rewarded for his quick thinking, thought his lordship.

He had never gotten the chance to speak with Uncle Simon, about the intended message for the Home Office. Perhaps before he left, he would slip upstairs, to see if the older man was up to talking. Turning back to Lady Winter, he was about to ask her something, but she spoke up first.

"If it would not interfere with your evening, would you and Sir Harry mind staying to dine with Laura and me?" she asked, her steady gaze all but imploring him to stay. "I should feel better having you gentlemen about until uncle is settled," she explained calmly, before looking pointedly at her niece. Lady Laura joined in agreeing, "Aunt is right. This whole business has been so unsettling, and I believe we would feel better in case Uncle Simon needs someone strong to help him." His own man will not be arriving until tomorrow afternoon.

Both Sir Harry and Lord Stanton readily agreed. Lady Winter asked Mary to tell Chef that there would be four to dine. And she conveyed what the doctor ordered for her uncle to eat. Mary bobbed a curtsy and hastened to the kitchen. Once there, she reported to the staff that the old gentleman was doing much better. A sigh of relief escaped everyone's lips. The kitchen became a hub of conversation. And for once, even Chef Armand did not mind their chatter.

Laura noticed her maid at the top of the staircase, beckoning her to come up. Excusing herself, she walked quickly upstairs to see what Sarah wanted. "What is it Sarah?" she asked as she reached the landing. But Sarah, looking worried, did not reply at once. Laura took the girl's hand saying, "Sarah, what is wrong, you appear upset."

Nodding her head, the maid exclaimed, "I didn't want to trouble you, with your uncle hurt and all, but you need to know miss," she got out. She turned, and with her mistress close behind, they went down to the room Laura occupied. When they entered the bedchamber, Sarah pointed to the trunk on the floor. It lay open and when they looked inside, they saw Alice lying on top of the clothes, Sarah had been packing." Was this why her maid was so upset Laura wondered?

Laura admonished her lightly, "Alice you should not be on my clean clothes." Reaching for Alice, even though she touched her, the small cat lay unresponsive. Her little white chest was moving in rhythmic intervals. She appeared to be asleep. "Alice!" her young mistress called, shaking the cat. She repeatedly tried to rouse her.

Picking Alice up, Laura turned to Sarah demanding, "When did you find her?" Sarah replied, "Just a few minutes ago, miss. I tried to get her to jump out but she wouldn't wake up." Alice finally stirred in Laura's arms and opened her sleepy eyes. Emitting a big yawn, she curled into a ball, and nestled against Laura's heart.

Lady Laura stated, "This is not like her at all. You saw how I tried to rouse her, Sarah. What do you think is wrong with her?" she asked. Sarah said she had no idea. After observing Alice begin to display a more normal behavior said, "I do thank you for telling me Sarah, but in future, if you notice anything wrong with Alice, please let me know at once," she instructed. Sarah promised her she would.

They discussed outfits and such until it was time for dinner. After changing her gown, Laura watched Alice as she lay stretched out on the bed. Satisfied that her little kitty was acting herself once more, Laura went downstairs to join the others.

-7- A Surprise Return

After the men handed the ladies into the plush carriage, they joined them and sat opposite, with their backs to the driver. Horton, Lord Stanton's driver, shook the reins gently and the horses began walking forward. Not seeing where they were going, but only where they had been was just fine, as the visions that sat before them were breathtakingly beautiful - Laura with her dewy countenance, and Lady Winter with her calm reserve, which only enhanced her radiance. Both ladies were dressed in pretty gowns, their parasols held overhead shading them from the sun's rays.

Everyone was familiar with Brighton's scenery and attractions, so they conversed while the wheels turned, bringing them ever closer to the shore. The salty air was fresh and a good breeze was keeping the air cooled. Seagulls floated in the sky overhead, their calls filling the air. What a beautiful day.

Upon their return, they were met by a flustered Bentley, who practically ran out to greet the group, as they stepped out of the carriage. Bowing toward them he turned at once to Lady Winter, exclaiming, "My lady. Please come quickly. It's your uncle. Alfred found him lying on the drawing room floor, and he is still unconscious." His agitation showing he turned abruptly, leading the way. Lady Winter let out a little cry and followed.

Lord Stanton beat them to the front door, his long legs carrying him swiftly to the drawing room. Once there, he took in the entire scene with a practiced glance. The housekeeper, Mrs. Willoughby, Alfred and Mary were all standing over the now prone gentleman, whose face was drained of color. He looked so small and vulnerable lying there.

Alfred must have picked him up and placed him on the settee. Mary was holding a now bloodstained cloth against the old man's forehead. Her worried look and unspoken words saying what everyone was thinking. He must have fallen somehow and hit his head. They all knew he was a bit shaky on his feet. The hand bell was lying on its side, and had rolled underneath a table.

Lord Stanton demanded "Did you send for the doctor?" He pulled Mary's hand away to see the full extent of Uncle Simon's injuries. The bleeding right above his left temple had almost stopped but there was a nasty gash. A bruise was forming and a lump was rising beneath his scalp. Bentley replied shakily, "Yes, my lord, Sarah is fetching him now."

By now, Lady Winter, Laura and Sir Harry had joined them, asking what happened, their concern written on their faces. Lady Laura dropped to her knees and placed her hand on the top of Uncle Simon's chest. "I feel his heart beating," she pronounced. She studied his breathing and cried, "Uncle Simon, we are here. Please open your eyes." She pleaded, frantically squeezing his frail hand. Bending her head she offered up a prayer.

Lady Winter took Laura's hand and led her to the sofa. "Take a seat my dear and let the doctor examine him," she said gently, for indeed, the doctor had arrived and stood looking down at Uncle Simon. Sarah, who now stood in the doorway, looked on and said, "I told the doctor how we found him. Will he be all right?" she asked.

The doctor asked Lord Stanton and Mrs. Willoughby to stay, and ordered everyone else from the room. "Let my patient have quiet so I may examine him." They all shuffled out of the room.

Taking seats in the foyer, everyone looked strained. Sir Harry stood almost as soon as he had taken a seat to begin pacing. "He was worried before we left," he told Lady Winter. She asked, "What are you speaking about?" Sir Harry looked aghast that he let his previous observation of the older gentleman slip.

"Lady Winter," he began, "It was an impression I had, is all. Before we left he seemed worried about something. Lord Stanton spoke with him for a few minutes. When we left he seemed relieved," he confided. "Perhaps I am wrong. Let us wait to see what Lord Stanton can tell us," he finished.

Lady Laura stood and paced about, too. Mary asked if anyone would care for tea. Lady Winter told her that would be a good idea and Mary, glad to be distracted, headed for the kitchen. The room fell quiet and they waited. What a surprising turn of events.

-6- Not Drawing Conclusions

Lady Winter and Laura excused themselves, retiring upstairs to prepare for their outing. It promised to be a bright sunny day with no chance of rain. The summer's heat had not been too bad for this time of year, but they knew they would need their parasols to protect their delicate skin. Freckles did not become a lady. And a suntan would never do.

The men were left to discuss matters of business and their horses while they awaited the ladies' return. Uncle Simon nonchalantly slipped his hand into his pocket to touch the silver box hidden there. Frowning to himself, he wondered once again why he needed to keep quiet about it and thought perhaps he might confide in Lord Stanton, who was more worldly than he. Since he was getting up in age he wasn't sure he was best suited for the task set before him.

An opportunity soon presented itself when Sir Harry got up abruptly, excused himself and left the room. Uncle Simon was unaware that Lord Stanton had made a head-jerking motion towards the door only seconds before. His decision made, Uncle Simon turned his worried eyes to the old family friend and said, "Sebastian, knowing you are a most loyal subject of the throne, I really must beg you to take this silver box to the Home Office in London." He placed the object onto the table separating the two men, his hand shaking slightly. "I am no longer the dashing blade I once was, and so I beseech you to keep the confidence passed on to me only an hour ago," he finished.

Reaching out his hand, Lord Stanton's long well tapered fingers closed around the box, dwarfing it in size when compared to his large hands. He examined it, then agreed they would sit down together later that afternoon to get all the facts straight before their leaving for London tomorrow. Uncle Simon looked relieved and smiled his thanks.

Lord Stanton was now in possession of a silver box, complete with secrets soon-to-be-disclosed. He wondered what Uncle Simon had gotten himself into but decided he would not draw conclusions before he understood the entire tale. He had noticed a stranger speaking to the elderly gentleman upon his arrival. Something about the man seemed familiar, but he wasn't sure because his back was to him and Sir Harry had been impatient to knock on the door and gain entry to the house. He was sure the boy had a tendre for his goddaughter.

Placing the box into his pocket just as Sir Harry returned, he smiled reassuringly at the elderly man. The ladies descended the stairs to join them by the doorway. "Shall we away?" Lady Winter asked. Sir Harry quickly offered his arm to Laura and Lord Stanton offered the same courtesy to Lady Winter. They bade the sweet old gentleman good-bye and left the house.

Alfred closed the door behind them then turning asked if Uncle Simon would be requiring his services. "Oh no but thank you Alfred. I shall rest a bit. You run along now," he said. Dismissed, Albert returned to the servants quarters to partake of his luncheon with the rest of the staff.

Uncle Simon settled down in the large comfortable chair already closing his eyes. He believed he had done the right thing, and exhaling a sigh took a leisurely nap.

-5- Morning Tea and Guests

Lady Laura let out a glad cry as she ran forward to greet the tall, broad shouldered gentleman, who upon seeing her stood and held out his arms. She literally flew into them and cried "Godfather, how good to see you." She let out a whoop as he lifted her up and smiled as he replied, "Indeed it is and my how you have grown." He planted a kiss on the top of her shining hair. He noticed she smelled faintly of lavender and became nostalgic for the little girl he had left behind when he had traveled to the Caribbean. Although they had exchanged a few letters during her school years it felt good to be home.

Setting her down, Lord Stanton released her and together they sat down on the sofa by the table, which was laid with morning tea and delicious muffins that Chef had sent down for their enjoyment. Her eyes shining, Laura turned expectantly toward Lady Winter and noticed a wistful look upon her face. "Aunt, isn't it perfect that Lord Stanton is finally come home," she demanded. Before looking over Laura's head to where the man in question sat, she schooled her features.

Lady Winter's eyes met those of Lord Stanton's and agreed "Yes, Laura it is. Here have some muffins. Chef makes them taste so good." She handed the plate to Laura, and turning to Sir Harry she drew him into the conversation by telling Laura their guests had come to take them for a drive. Her niece quickly agreed to the plan adding, "I shall need to have Sarah put my hair up and then give her some instructions about packing before we leave."

So for the next twenty minutes they talked and laughed at different stories they had to tell. Most of the time Sir Harry and Lady Winter sat by, while Laura and Lord Stanton talked nonstop. This gave her aunt time to inspect Lord Stanton unguardedly, to drink in his handsome countenance. She watched his mouth move in conversation, his lips curve into a smile and his otherwise reserved features light up with undisguised joy. Yes indeed, she too was glad he was home.

Uncle Simon holding onto Alfred's arm entered the room and took a seat to join the party, the little silver box tucked securely in his coat pocket.

-4- Laura Becomes Suspicious

Laura whirled around to see Sarah approaching along the path, and if she was wondering why her mistress was lurking behind the tree she never let her expression convey this as she said, "Miss, Lady Winter would like you to join her and her guests in the drawing room."

Laura considered not going immediately but changed her mind. "Sarah," she asked, "Please let Uncle Simon know I will be joining her ladyship but will speak with him a bit later." Thoughtfully she added "See if you can find out who that gentleman is as I do not recall seeing him before." Laura walked back into the house and thought that she could find out who he was without showing any open interest on her part. Much to her chagrin she glanced back in time to see the man bowing to her uncle and striding off in the opposite direction from the garden. She turned the door handle and went inside.

Now why would he leave that way she mused. Along the shadowed hallway her thoughts continued in this manner. So deep in thought was she that she almost bumped into Alfred as he carried a brass bound trunk toward the staircase. "Oh, I do beg your pardon Alfred," she exclaimed. Alfred had already set the trunk down and was standing back so as to allow her to pass. "All is well miss." he nodded and then proceeded to lift the trunk once more and go upstairs.

Just as she was ready to enter the drawing room she began to wonder why her aunt wanted her to join her. She looked at the grandfather clock to see it was only ten o'clock. Very early for visitors. She pushed open the doors and smiled when she saw who was there.

-3- Lady Winter Laughs

Lady Winter finished her breakfast and sipped her steaming cup of coffee, made from Jamaican beans that Chef Armand had personally roasted only that morning. She lifted a letter, her hand poised in midair, as sounds of heavy footfalls approached. Laying the unopened letter back down on the silver salver, she looked up to see who might be arriving. "Sir Harry Perkins and Lord Stanton my lady," Bentley, the butler announced and bowed as they entered.

They quickly crossed to the table as she stood up to greet her guests. "Lady Winter," they both murmured as they each, in turn, raised her fingers to their lips. "We didn't mean to disturb you coming by this early," stated Lord Stanton looking a bit uncomfortable at obviously interrupting Lady Winter's breakfast.

She hurriedly assured them that she was about to get up to walk outside to the garden. "It might be better if we sit down in the drawing room if you wouldn't mind transferring there?" she asked. They agreed and she led the way down the hall to the front of the house. Once there she turned and asked "To what do I owe this visit?"

Sir Harry piped up eagerly, "We wanted to take you and Lady Laura for a drive as Lord Stanton has just purchased a new carriage and a set of perfectly matched grays." His excitement was amusing to behold. He brushed back his blond hair from sheer nervousness. His entreating look reminded her of a puppy's.

Lady Winter hid her smile and turned toward the very tall, dark haired, gorgeous man standing right next to her. She had to bend her neck back to look into his eyes. What she saw there made her tingle from the top of her head to her toes. My, she thought he is still so handsome, even after these ten years of not seeing him. Was it possible he was even more handsome, she wondered.

Lord Stanton had recently returned from Jamaica where he owned land planted in sugar cane, which was harvested slave free. He was as rich as Croesus and could easily afford to pay his employees handsomely. Something in his expression told her he knew what she was thinking and she hurriedly looked back at Sir Harry, smiling widely and said. "You might not know it but we will be busy packing to be ready to journey to London tomorrow. We will be there for the season and must prepare for our departure."

But upon seeing Lord Harry's happy expression fall she said "We might be able to go for a short ride as long as we are back by two o'clock." His face immediately looked hopeful again.

Lady Winter moved toward the bell-pull and reaching out gave it a light tug. Within thirty seconds, Mary bobbed a curtsy and Lady Winter asked her to bring Lady Laura to her at once. The maid left in search of her mistress. Lady Winter laughed and her guests looked at her with a little surprise. Inwardly she was feeling alive and very well, indeed. Recovering her dignified poise at once she bade them "Pray be seated."

Meanwhile, Lady Laura was looking with curiosity at the handsome stranger who was in deep conversation with Uncle Simon. Something about their hushed undertones made her stay hidden behind the large live oak tree. Only the hem of her dress was visible. Even Alice was quietly watching. Suddenly she felt she was being observed and Laura turned away, only to miss the stranger handing a small silver box to her uncle.

And as cats often do Alice soon lost interest, jumped down and sashayed towards the kitchen. Chef Armand always had a treat ready for her, no matter what time she appeared. Nose in the air she walked languidly, her attention fixed on the smell of food.

- 2- Uncle Norman, Aunt Minerva and Alice

  Alice,
originally uploaded by Theresa111.
Lady Laura descended the main staircase holding onto the deep oak handrail as she went. The wood was polished to a high gloss and felt lovely under her hand as she followed the graceful curve of the slight downward spiral. When she reached the bottom of the steps she proceeded along the foyer and down the hallway, before turning into the breakfast salon which was situated at the back of the house. She paused before entering the room as something seemed amiss.

Her eyes searched the room from where there wafted the delicious smells of the breakfast foods for which Chef Armand was famous. But I don't find it easy to get up after sitting for a time." He grunted as Alfred helped him to stand. "You look lovely my dearest. Come and give an old man a hug," he laughed gruffly.

Laura sprang into his arms and embraced him warmly. "Oh Uncle, it is so grand to see you again. Since I have returned from school and have enjoyed a few weeks here in Brighton, I was wondering when you would get here." She stepped back her face shining with delight.

He took in her beauty, her sincere happiness and returned the smile, a twinkle reaching his merry blue eyes. "Your parents would be so pleased by you Laura, indeed they would. You have quite grown into a pretty young thing," he replied. Her smile deepened.

"I was about to breakfast but I will hurry, and after you have walked about the garden I will come outside to join you," she said.

"No need to hurry my dear we have all the time in the world," he stated moving forward, his wrinkled hand upon the strong arm of Alfred. "Take your time Laura, Alfred will bring me up to date and then you and I will have ourselves some tea in the garden." He waved as Alfred helped him down the few steps beyond the door which led to the outside.

Laura sat down and helped herself to the plate of food just sent down from the kitchen. It was filled with golden scrambled eggs, lightly sprinkled with cheddar cheese. Thick slices of deep red tomatoes and crisply fried bacon were placed alongside. She reached for the bread, and tore off a portion, spread strawberry jam and before she knew it she had finished and was drinking the last of her tea, when she heard a rustling of skirts nearing the doorway. She glanced up in time to see a most elegantly clad woman enter the room, flourishing her beauty without a thought.

"Good morning dearest, did you sleep well?" she asked. Taking her seat she placed the linen napkin on her lap covering the blue of her damask morning dress. She brushed tendrils of deep auburn hair from her eyes and inspected the plate of food being set down before her by one of the serving maids. "Thank you Mary," she said, as the maid bobbed a curtsy. She looked at Laura with a smile.

"Good Morning Aunt Minerva. Yes. Surprisingly, I slept well and the ocean breeze is wonderfully invigorating, is it not?" she asked. Her aunt agreed and Laura continued "Uncle Simon is walking about the garden and I am so glad he has arrived. It is all coming true. We leave for London tomorrow."

"Yes Laura, your time has finally come to enter London society, and we will have but two months to prepare for your first ball," she stated. Taking a mouthful of food and raising her eyebrows she continued, "Chef has certainly added something different to the eggs. The flavor is so delicate." She rolled her eyes heavenward.

"Chef has not revealed any of his secrets to me but he did promise to show me how to prepare a menu. In fact he said it is imperative I learn these important matters," Laura revealed. Her aunt seemed a bit surprised that the chef would take her niece under his wing. Being French he was usually throwing people out of his kitchen, his domain as he put it. Laura must has won him over to have him volunteer his culinary supervision.

Lady Laura excused herself from the table and walked into the drawing room calling to Alice, her young cat. Alice had come to her while she was at Miss Kent's School for Young Ladies, in Bath. Just a tiny ball of fluff was the first image Laura had of the tiny kitten. She was starving, about five weeks old and mewling pathetically. Being fond of animals, Laura snatched her up and nursed her to health. The little cat loved her mistress and would follow her about devotedly.

She was found in the drawing room napping and upon seeing Laura she yawned, stretched and stood up. As soon as Laura was about a foot away, Alice gracefully leaped up and into a laughing Laura's arms. "Oh my pet," she said giving Alice a hug and a quick kiss. "You are the most beautiful kitty in the world and you are mine. Come with me to the garden and I shall introduce you to your Great Uncle Simon. Alice nuzzled Laura under her chin, settling comfortably within the arms which so lovingly held her.

As soon as Lady Laura and Alice emerged onto the garden path she froze when she spotted the tall handsome man sitting next to Uncle Simon.

- 1 - Getting Ready To Travel North

Sarah Derby had been personal maid to Lady Laura for five weeks now. She jumped as she heard the tinkling of the bell, summoning her to climb the stairs, to the upper floors where the bedrooms were housed. Upon reaching the bedroom door, she tapped lightly and waited until she heard Lady Laura command her to enter. She bobbed a curtsy then stood quietly to hear what her young mistress would say.

"Good morning Sarah, did you sleep well?" she inquired pleasantly. Sarah replied she had, and was smiling inside because she had such a lovely person to work for. Nothing was boring when young miss was about, and as they were to travel to London on the morrow, she knew she would be very busy today. "What would you have me do first milady?" She asked.

"Oh, please help me get dressed, then I shall go downstairs for a light breakfast." She turned to Sarah and asked, "Have you eaten yet?" "Oh yes miss, a few hours ago." Sarah replied. "Well that is good then." Lady Laura said. "Perhaps you will begin by ordering up the trunks, and make sure that one of the footmen carry them upstairs for you. By the time I have eaten, we can decide what is best to pack."

Sarah assisted her to dress, and helped button all of the tiny buttons on the back of the dress. Her mistress had the purest and creamiest skin, with a light blush of color upon her cheeks. Her eyes were very large, colored a sweet sherry brown, and she was fortunate to have long dark lashes to enhance them. Now dressed in a light caramel shaded gown, she turned as Sarah handed her a pale golden shawl, which had no fringe.

Sarah dressed Lady Laura's hair by tying a coppery colored satin ribbon around her long, wavy amber hair, to keep it away from her face. "You won't be able to wear your hair down whilst you're in London, miss." Sarah reminded her. "Oh yes, I shall wear my hair up, and turn into a grand lady." Lady Laura smiled, showing perfect white teeth and then, whirling in a circle, she hugged Sarah and continued "I am so happy finally to be going to London!"

A surprised Sarah watched as her young miss hurried away downstairs. She smiled again for she, too, would be traveling to the great city. This would be an adventure for them both.

Prologue ... Brighton 1814

Lady Laura stretched her arms above her head and extended the morning yawn down to the tips of her toes. She slowly opened her eyes and looked at the small clock on the mantle above the now unlit fireplace. At night the fire was always lit to keep out the chill, to keep her comfortable. Now, she remembered her plans for the day and commenced to get out of the bed. She washed her hands and face, brushed her teeth and rang the bell-pull for her maid.
