Earth Day 2012: Show Our Planet Some Love!

This Sunday, April 22, is Earth Day--the anniversary of what many consider to be the birth of the modern environmental movement. In 1970, Gaylord Nelson, U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, announced the need for a "national teach-in on the environment" to be presented to the public through the media. The idea was spread far and wide, and it drew many people to support the cause of changing our gas-guzzling and environmentally unfriendly ways, through protests, education, and action.

As time has passed and we have seen the impacts of climate change grow increasingly dire, the need for environmental consciousness and action is greater than ever before. Earth day is a wonderful day to remember the importance of caring for our planet, if we've been busy caught up in the bustle of our own lives. It is a great day to start new habits, like using reusable shopping bags rather than plastic, or changing from incandescent to more energy-efficient CFL lightbulbs. Perhaps it is a day for planting a tree, physically getting your hands down in the dirt, or donating to an organization that will do the planting for you (the nature conservancy will plant a tree for a $1 donation). Or you can attend any number of environmental events to learn and take action (learn about some of these at the official earth day website).

However you choose to celebrate, we invite you to join us in considering (and hopefully acting upon) your individual impact on the planet, and what we can do to cause the least harm and maybe even some good to the world we live in and the people and animals that inhabit it. We all have the power to make a difference through small changes; imagine the impact when they all add up!

March 10: Tibetan National Uprising Day

March 10 is Tibetan National Uprising day, in which thousands of Tibetans and Tibet supporters will take to the streets to show their support for the cause of freeing Tibet from Chinese oppression. Other ways to get involved and show your support on this day or any other can be found Students for a Free Tibet International.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army took over Tibet by force in 1949, under the rule of Chairman Mao. In 1951, an "agreement" was passed, stating China's sovereignty over Tibet but allowing the Tibetan government's autonomy when it came to internal affairs. As time went on and China repeatedly violated this treaty, resistance to their rule grew.

In 1959, thousands of Tibetans came to Lhasa (the Capitol city) seeking refuge from the Chinese repression in their towns and villages. Despite government officials' orders to disperse, the people refused to leave and the crowd grew larger and larger. On March 10, 1959, these Tibetans surrounded the Dalai Lama's summer residence to protect their leader and demand the Chinese leave Tibet. As the protests intensified, Chinese troops responded with violence, and a full-on uprising ensued in the streets, with the mostly unarmed Tibetans fighting for their freedom against a finely tuned and well-armed army. The Dalai Lama fled to India, with the help of many Tibetan resistance fighters. Tens of thousands of Tibetans were killed and taken prisoner, while thousands more fled persecution by making the hazardous journey into exile in India.

"For the past 50 years, the Chinese government has done everything in its power to divide Tibetans and confuse the world about the issue. Tibet’s historical provinces of U-Tsang, Kham and Amdo have been cut up into the Tibetan Autonomous Region and the four Chinese provinces of Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu & Yunnan. At the same time, the Chinese authorities have tried to convince the international community that the majority of Tibetans are happy under Chinese rule and that it is only a privileged minority who agitate for independence.

But even a quick look at the history of the Tibetan people under Chinese occupation exposes the absurdity of this claim. In the 60 years since China invaded Tibet, Tibetans from all walks of life have sacrificed their lives to resist the occupation and restore Tibet’s freedom." (Students for a Free Tibet)

Today, Tibet remains an occupied country with no freedom of speech, assembly, press, or religion. The Chinese government is determined to stifle any form of dissent by wiping out all traces of Tibetan national identity, including their language, social structure, monastic life, and Buddhism. Those who rebel are persecuted, sometimes fatally. Despite the inevitable backlash, many Tibetans are still protesting and fighting for their freedom. Over the past couple of years, Tibetan monks have been protesting by setting themselves on fire, spurring a violent crack down on Tibetan protesters by the Chinese government. If you think that this oppression needs to end, that the Tibetan people deserve freedom and independence, consider taking non-violent direct action or educating others on the Tibetan plight. Tibetan National Uprising Day on May 10th is great day to start!

Mexicali Every Day: Styling the Dahlia Overdye Dress

Carly's third look features the same sort of layering, with the dress over a long-sleeve top for warmth--and a thin leather belt to accentuate her waist--but in this case she has chosen a deep v-neck tee to show off one of our bold beaded fashion necklaces, for a bit of boho glamour!

Scarf Tying Tutorial--How to Tie a Scarf--Lesson 10: The "Best Dressed" Boho Vest

Step 1: Fold the scarf in half, tying the top corner of each side together (if your scarf has fringe, use that; if it doesn't, just tie the corners a couple of times so you can be sure they'll stay)

Step 2: Fold scarf in half again, keeping the knot you just tied on top.

Step 3: Tie the top corner of each side together again (your first knot will be inside or next to this new one)

Step 4: Pull the sides of the scarf apart, so the knot you have created is in the middle.

Step 5: You will see that you have created two armholes; put your arms through and go rock this vest, impressing everyone with your style and ingenuity!

Scarf Tying Tutorial--How to Tie a Scarf--Lesson 8: "Rambling Rose" Neck Scarf & Headband

NECK SCARF

Step 1: Place unfolded scarf behind neck, and bring the loose ends in front of you.
Step 2: Bring ends off to the side where you want your bloom to be, and begin twisting the them together from the top down.
Step 3: Once you have twisted down to the bottom of the scarf ends, begin twisting the new hanging end into a rose-shaped coil, arranging it with your hand as you go.
Step 4: Tuck the tail behind and down the loop that is around your neck.

HEADBAND

Step 1: Roll or fold scarf over to make it the desired width for a comfortable headband.
Step 2: Wrap scarf around head in headband position.
Step 3: Bring ends off to the side where you want your bloom to be, and begin twisting the them together, starting close to your head and twisting away.
Step 3: Once you have twisted down to the bottom of the scarf ends, begin twisting the new hanging end into a rose-shaped coil, arranging it with your hand as you go.
Step 4: Tuck the tail behind and down underneath the part that wraps around your head.

One Dress, 30 Days: Blogger Shows How Accessories Can Make an Outfit

Accessories can have an enormous impact on the simplest of outfits, and blogger Susan Stephenson is proving it this month with her "Dress to Impress" project. Building creative outfits around the same L.L. Bean Signature sweater dress each day throughout the month of January, Stephenson hopes to encourage women to make the most of their wardrobes and build outfits that help them put their best fashion foot forward!

In the above picture, Susan has brought bright bohemian style to the classic sweater dress with a Mexicali Blues recycled silk magic wrap skirt and a bold wooden fashion necklace. Pretty earrings by Leetie Lovendale for the Beadin' Path and luxurious leather boots from Clarks USA round out this stylish outfit that perfectly blends exotic creativity and sophistication!

The goal of this project is to show women the myriad possibilities of professional, pulled-together outfits that can be created with a bit of creativity and the items already in their closets. Accessories are far more affordable than a completely new wardrobe, and this is a way to show women that they don't need to feel that they can't dress their best because they can't afford it.

Stephenson's project emphasizes the importance of creating the best possible outward impression, particularly for women currently seeking employment. All items used for this project will ultimately be donated to Dress for Success of Southern Maine, a non-profit organization that provides women in need with suits, accessories, and a big confidence boost to help in their own career development.

Step 4: Making sure the ends are close to the same length, pull out one of your newly formed loops, circling the loose end up through it and back out.
Step 5: Repeat on the other side.

Step 5: Twist scarf so the loose tails are hanging off the the side, for a sweet asymmetric look!

Watching The Moon: Tracking Lunar Phases in 2012

The moon is a powerful force of nature that has long captivated humankind with its ethereal beauty and mystical wonder. It is connected strongly to the changing of the tides, and many people believe it connects to human and animal behavior as well. Although much of the evidence is purely anecdotal, we have seen our pets get weird around the full moon, and experienced sleepless nights when the moon is at its fullest even with the curtains closed.

There are many myths and legends about the moon that have persisted over time; it is often considered to represent feminine energy or the "earth mother". Some who believe in crystal energy believe that the full moon is an ideal time to cleanse your crystals, by placing them on a moon-facing windowsill on their own or in a glass of water. Hunters and fishermen have noted that animals and fish seem to easier to find under the light of the full moon, due to increased activity as well as brighter light. The moon also plays an integral part in astrology, and is considered to represent our hidden inner selves, with full moons and eclipses representing times of rebirth and change.

Step 5: Twist your hand with the scarf wrapped around it, creating a new twisted loop
Step 5: Pull the loose end through that loop, and repeat, twisting as you go until your knot chain is the desired length!

We are so in love with his photographs, and wanted so share some of our favorites with you!

"Three fishermen on Inle Lake. The fisherman of this region have a unique rowing technique, where they stand on the stern on one leg and wrap the other leg around the oar allowing for fine paddle control. This way they can precisely steer around thick vegetation which often appears on the lake. It also keeps one had free for using nets. These fishermen successfully live off the land and its natural resources, without using motor propelled boats."

The DRA Great Salt Bay Music Fest: Roots, Rock n’ Reggae

A Rasta Peace Patch turns any outfit into a reggae celebration!

One of our favorite local Maine events is back and better than ever! The Roots, Rock n' Reggae Fest is a musical extravaganza of good vibes and great tunes, taking place at one of our very favorite places--the Salt Bay Farm in Damariscotta! Owned by the Damariscotta River Association, the Salt Bay Farm is on 100 acres of protected land in the Great Salt Bay. The Damariscotta River Association is an awesome organization, dedicated to preserving and promoting the natural, cultural, and historical heritage of the Damariscotta River and surrounding areas. Many of the places we love to hike in the midcoast are being protected and maintained by the DRA---in short, they rock!

Last year's Reggae by the Bay celebration was awesome, and we are super psyched for this year's event, taking place this Saturday, July 23 from 10:30AM to 5:00PM. A fun event for the whole family, there is great food, tasty drinks, and awesome music surrounded by the gorgeous backdrop of stunning fields and forest.

Singer/songwriter Bruce Hardina will get the party started at 11:00AM, with his warm melodies and insightful lyrics easing the crowd into an awesome day as his tunes skip and tumble from reflective to rockin'.

Following Hardina's mellow grooves, the New Rangers will take the stage at noon with their unique blend of folk and country-roots rock.

Gypsy Tailwind will rock your socks off at 1:30, playing soulful Americana with a modern twist. See them performing their original song "Spirits" below:

Next up is some awesome reggae with festival favorite Beat Horizon. Known for their high-energy reggae, there is no way you will be able to listen to this band without getting up and grooving!

Mexicali Blues is proud to be sponsoring this event with other local businesses, and all proceeds support the conservation and education work of the Damariscotta River Association. "Tickets are on sale now at Maine Coast Bookstore in Damariscotta, Mexicali Blues in Newcastle, and also at DRA headquarters at 110 Belvedere Road in Damariscotta. Prices are $20 in advance, $25 at the gate, children 12 and under free. A single ticket is good for the entire day, granting access to all four performances. This year, hoping to make the concert more accessible to teens and young adults, the DRA will offer a special student price of $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Volunteers are needed and receive free admission and a t-shirt." More info can be found at the DRA website.

Step 1: Hold your magic skirt out on both sides, behind your hips.

Step 2: Bring the right side up over your shoulder, keeping your grasp on the end and pulling your right hand back down towards your waist.

Step 3: Take hold of that end with your left hand hand. Using your right hand, pull the tie on the other side across your chest and up.

Step 4: Pull the strand in your right hand around your neck and back around, under your left arm and back towards your front.

Step 5: Bring the strand in your left hand around your back and back to the front, circling around your waist.
Step 6: Tie the two strands in the front, around your waist.

Step 7: Enjoy getting compliments on your exotic new look!
