Journey Through Ephesians

We've begun our "Journey Through Ephesians" and this week has been just what I needed

God is funny that way! He always brings me the exact scripture I need at just the right time.

Many times He uses people, like you, to encourage me when I need it most.

Verse 16 from chapter 1 "grabbed me" right off the bat:

"¹⁶Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers"

Paul is speaking to the church at Ephesus, and he in this verse he is encouraging them

to pray for each other- he is telling them how he continually gives thanks for them and

prays for them, "making mention" of them in his (regular ) prayers.

I've had a lot of special prayers requests from different ladies in our various groups.

*It has been such a blessing to interact with you - to pray for you - and to be

encouraged by you! I love how these passages in Ephesians 1 sort of

"bring it all home" for me as it calls us to live by Paul's example in praising God

through good times and bad- to seek wisdom - to believe that God has the

answers we seek - and to live like true children of the King - worthy of our inheritance

all a part of the same family - brothers and sisters in Christ- loving, encouraging,

and praying for one another!

There is no "big mystery" to living the way we are called to. . . .

Walk in LOVE!

Do that by praying and reading God's word - knowing that we are not our own

We are bought with a price and we are free to live like

children of the King - daughters of the Living God!

It's an exciting concept. We are "whole" we are "pure" and we are

"free" to walk in Love -

Love for Christ, Love for our families, Love for others

^"18The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

¹⁹And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

²⁰Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,"

Whatever your situation today, know that God loves you, He will grant you wisdom

and understanding - This same God who raised Jesus from the grave - has called us

all to be "part of the body" - loving each other - praying for each other-

I'm a child of the King - now I need to live like it

by walking in LOVE!

Are you praying for the body of Christ? Are you walking in love and

lifting each other up with encouragement?

We may be a scruffy, beachy mess in this picture- but we are a happy mess!

In almost 12 years of marriage, we've experienced it all-

the good times, and also the bad.

There are times when it is easy to be the mate I'm supposed to be

and also times when it takes REAL WORK.

It takes work to build up your spouse when you want to take them down instead.

There was a time in my marriage when that was the case for me.

I was angry because I didn't like the way some things in our life had been handled.

I was hurt, and I was scared for our future. That made me angry.

So, I was NOT the most pleasant woman to be around.

I let it fester to the point
where my poor hubs couldn't do anything "right" in my eyes.
I finally gave in and laid it all down at the feet of Jesus.
I asked God to help me let go of the anger and hurt feelings so that I could
begin to be the spouse I am supposed to be.

It didn't happen overnight- but God began to heal my heart.
I started with one thing each day that I could be thankful for - I've shared in another
post that it started out pretty pitifully with something like
"Thank you Lord that he doesn't beat me"
(sad, but true- I was that far gone that I had a very difficult time seeing the good)

It got easier as I repeated my "gratitude mantra" throughout each day.
"Thank you Lord that Mark is such a hard worker"
"Thank you that he gives everything to his family - all he has- all he is - for us"
"Thank you God that my husband truly loves me"

God healed my heart to the point that I find it difficult to even remember what was so
wrong in the first place. He took my lousy attitude and covered it with grace!

How to Have a HEART for Your Kids

What does this all have to do with the book club and having a heart for your kids?

PLENTY !!!

As a matter of fact it has
EVERYTHING
to do with it

Kids learn to model behavior they see. They need to know that even though
life isn't always perfect - their parents and their family unit is in it together.

We are a team, and we aren't just managing to "make it through" each day -
we care enough to put effort into enriching our marriage.

Our marriage is our foundation.

Ways to "enrich" your marriage:
Bring back the romance! Put the kiddos to bed early or have older ones keep them
in an upstairs play room or a bed room playing board games, and have a candle light dinner.
One of our favorite things to do is to take a walk on the beach together. Even with the kids in tow,
they can run up ahead while we hang back and hold hands and stroll!

Talk to each other! With three little boys, it can be difficult to have a full conversation with my
husband. Both of us are busy, he works long hours, it's not easy to find the time. Yet, at least
a few times each week we will make sure the kids know not to interrupt us, we close the door,
and just hang out and talk! Schedule it if you have to. Communication matters.

Date Night! As much as I love this idea, I am guilty of not doing it right. You don't have to spend
money on a sitter if you don't have it. Once the kiddos go to bed or are otherwise occupied,
take a walk, play a card game, read together, or have a picnic in the living room! We got pregnant on
our honeymoon, so even on our first year anniversary we had a three month old in tow. Even on a
tight budget, you can find creative ways to enjoy time together.

Physical expressions of love! It's good for your children to see you hug,
or hold hands during family movie night. They may make choking noises or gag when they see you
kiss each other in the kitchen, but make no mistake- it warms their heart and gives them
security in a world where that is greatly lacking.

*Flirt! It's simple but true, you were attracted to each other for a reason. You may not feel, look,
or even be young anymore - but you need to get your groove back once in awhile! Put on a
bit of lipstick, take time to run a brush through your hair before your husband gets home.
Even if you are exhausted after a long day with kids, it will make you feel better to
pull yourself together and bat those eyelashes just a tad.
I struggle with the pain of RA every day of my life, so it's all that more important for me to
combat my chronic illness and pull myself together instead of throwing in the towel.

Silly as it may sound- Lipstick is my secret weapon!
It's amazing what taking a few minutes to do the hair and makeup can do for you.
It also shows your husband and children that you care to try to look and feel your best for them!

Color With Emotion

The emotion is evoked in me from the memory that each photo bears:

Balloons- Saying goodbye to special people - Letting Go

Tulips (I love tulips) Adventure with the boys as we journeyed into lands unknown

This day we left our temporary home in Louisville and visited the Creation Museum just

outside of Cincinnati, Ohio - we hadn't planned to stay the night - but we crossed the state

line after a full day at the museum and went to see the big city lights.

An exciting adventure for us - used to our small beach town.

We found a hotel, bought toothbrushes, t-shirts and necessities from an outlet store -

The next day we parked downtown and walked for miles through the city visiting museums and

art galleries along the way. We hit the mother load at the Cincinnati Museum Center at

Union Terminal where we found - the Cincinnati History Museum, Duke Energy Children's Museum,

The Cincinnati Museum of Natural Science and History - The boys still talk about their first ever

taxi ride they took that day as we, tired and happy, made our way back to the car parked downtown.

It was a lovely adventure!

We love to travel to beautiful places during their "off season" times - we had the beach in

St. Augustine almost all to ourselves and had a lovely time exploring and camping in the area!

Here sits a fine, good man! He is our private "guide" and full of interesting tid-bits on nature.

Many calm evenings spent by the glistening water watching "the ball drop" as our children

play happily near by. We even get to hold hands and take a walk sometimes!

On our journey's we like to "Stop to Smell the Wildflowers" you never know what

surprise you might find just around the next corner - if you're willing to see the little things

HE whispers to me "Look smaller" and I notice - HE says "Smaller still" and I then I see!

So many wonderful discoveries to be made in His Creation

This pretty bee calls the Oscar Scherer State Park home

This bright "Bird of Paradise" serves as a reminder of a very special day!

We visited Ponce de Leon's legendary "fountain of youth" at Warm Mineral Springs

It was the day boy #2 gave his heart and life to follow Christ - we floated around the warm pool

as we talked of deep and amazing things. He demonstrated his understanding of God's

unconditional love - It's a favorite adventure for that reason.

Just another day at home. You never know where you may find adventure.

We love to stop everything and observe!

I adore this babe from Babcock Ranch - we are fortunate enough to have been able to camp there

with friends - It's a fun way to learn about early pioneers in Florida as Florida is

actually the original cattle state and thus brought the nickname "Florida Cracker"

(from the whips cracking in the wind)

The world's most beautiful bouquet!!

One of the best things about being surrounded by boys - they LOVE their Mommy!

even camping - they bring me "flowers"

(yes, it's a violation of the "leave only footprints and take only pictures" rule-

but a few weeds here and there are hard to turn down from sweet dirty faced boys)

Homeschool Mother's Journal

I didn't make the last couple of posts for the Homeschool Mother's Journal, so I thought I'd

combine the past couple of weeks to show you some of what we've been up to

I'm not a morning person, but for the past couple of weeks, I've been waking up around

sunrise to pray. It's a rare thing for me. Here on the Gulf Coast of Florida (down south)

we get the most fabulous sun sets, but it's unusual for me to catch a sunrise. Obviously

it's not the horizon but the sun reflects off the water behind our home - the fog begins to lift -

and this particular morning there was a pink hue all across the sky.

Some of us are participating in the 31 days to Pray for Your Spouse Challenge through

January - I've used this time to pray for my own husband - and the sweet ladies in my group.

Spence got to spend some good one on one time learning about tying up fishing nets -

there is not much else in the world that makes him happier -except actually fishing

(Yes, that is one of my chalkboards out there- argh)

We have a fun little homeschool "book club" which meets once each month.

Each of the children stands before the group of parents and students and tells about

a favorite book they've been reading. It's great public speaking practice.

We then all hang at the park - and the children are awarded with free lunch tickets from

the local Jason's Deli - It's been so generous of Jason's Deli to support the reading group

and kids in our community! Thank YOU Jason's Deli!!

It provides a wonderful opportunity for socializing, public speaking, supports literacy,

and local homeschool families! They have healthy menu options, even gluten free, and ICE CREAM!

If you haven't tried a Jason's Deli- well, you get the point - we are fans!

(I'm not being paid to tell you this I promise- just very grateful for all they have done)

No, that is not Big Foot wearing a football jersey. That's our friend Nick hiding in the woods.

You may know his sweet mama- Jenn from "Daze of Adventure"

(if ya don't know her yet, I suggest you hop over there and check her out)

Anyhoo, we got the kiddos out for a good long nature walk last Friday on the trails at Tippecanoe

Nick's silliness wasn't limited to disguising himself with shrubs - he also enjoyed jumping out of them!

It's a miracle I got this picture at all - since I jumped clean out of my skin!

My boys had a lovely time exploring the trails - which of course, we had to ourselves on a weekday!

Who teaches this boy strut thang anyway? :)

I remember dressing my little brother up in our old dresses when he could barely walk

. . . . . and even with the dress on - he had the boy strut going on!

The week prior, we had a visit from my sister and her 3 boys - yes, you counted right

6 boys in the house!

All under the age of 10 - it was a wonderful time

They brought us some hermit crabs - who have been a BIG hit around here - and I'm happy to

report - are actually still alive.

It was our "Christmas" gathering for the New Year

Of course, there was beach time:

These cousins are only a few weeks apart. They both turned 7 recently

They all have so much fun together- just boys - doing boy things

It was- as always - the perfect end - to the perfect day!

We've also been cracking the books! We received our new

"Big Book of History" from Master Books and LOVE

can I say LOVE it!

3 in 30 Goals:

I'm not going to pretend to know exactly where I am on my monthly goals - It's been a whirlwind.
But, I press on toward the mark and I know I'm making progress!

All in all - I'm very pleased with the way January is progressing. Except the laundry. Waaayyy behind!

Need a Special Valentine Gift for Kiddos?

I wanted something unique for my cutie pie little nephews who are 3 year old twins.

So, this cute little "cigar box" is what I came up with!

The outside is painted with chalk paint by Martha Stewart crafts bought at Michaels Craft Store

I included extra large crayon style chalk from the dollar store!

On the inside I painted a layer of magnetic paint on each side and then painted over it in acrylic

with bright coordinating colors and used a black sharpie pen to paint on a checker board and tic tac toe game

For the game pieces - I used Skulpey clay and shaped them into rounded disks for checkers

On one side of the disk I made an X indention on the other I made an O (dot) for the tic tac toe game!

ABC wooden pieces with magnets glued to the back completed this special project!

For decoration I added a painted wooden airplane on the front and a handle to make carrying easy.

The boys love carrying their "briefcases" around

Older children will love the games and making words out of their alphabet magnets!

How to Have a HEART For Your Kids - Chapter 1

Have a Heart for the Things of God

Ever feel like a broken record with your children?

"Don't fight" "Bring your plate to the kitchen" "Put that back where it belongs"

Homeschool moms are pretty much on 24 - 7 so the list gets even longer.

To my own horror - in a house full of boys -I have even found myself saying things like

"Don't you dare spit in the house" "We do NOT hit each other"

"No hitting, kicking, spitting, biting, fighting"

"Do NOT throw things in the house!"

Well, as tiresome as it may seem - I don't think we are completely off track with

this whole "repetition" thing. This is what the Bible says:

Deuteronomy 6: 7

"And thou shalt teach them diligently to your children, and shalt talk of them

when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way,

and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."

That's a lot of teaching. It's a round the clock kind of thing when you are training children.

Now, verse 7 above isn't actually talking about teaching them "not to fight with your brothers"

Verse 5 before it reads:

"Thou shalt love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,

and with all your might"

Now, I try to remember this on a regular basis, but I seem to be suffering from some

strange for of amnesia - I call it "momNesia" - If I could just stop myself ahead of time I'd be better off

because when I stop myself from the usual
"Don't hold your brother down on the ground until he screams"

kind of instruction - and remember these verses - I am reminded to focus on

"having a Heart for the Lord"

Then my instruction - the words from my mouth - change to something like this:

"Are you treating each other the way God wants you to?"

"How do you think Jesus feels when He sees you do that to your brother?"

"I'd like y'all to stop and pray and ask God to help you do this the right way"

It's amazing how that can affect my children't attitudes immediately!

I'm still a broken record.

But somehow these words which mirror God's heart for my children

wax much more poetic from the tongue than do the
"I said STOP NOW" variety.

Funny Story - Implementing This "Strategy" :
I just have to share this funny story with you from one of our experiences
The two younger boys - then 4 and 5 years old - were "having a fighting moment"
Instead of breaking it up with time outs or raising my voice -
I simply told the boys they were not in trouble- that I'd like for them to each have a seat
facing each other (again more reassurances they were NOT in time out)
I didn't want to hear "but HE did this , and HE started it"
I calmly said "Boys, I'd like you each to remember how God wants you to talk to
each other - how He wants you to show respect for others"
I went on to explain that they could speak to each other and work it out and then
they were free to get up and go play again.

As hubs and I ducked around the corner to listen - This is what we heard:
Walker said, "OK, Spence - you can go first".
Spencer said, "Thank you! OK, well, Walker - I really hate it when you toot on me!"
Walker - "Yeah, but you've gotta admit- it's pretty funny!"
Spencer - "But it's terrible"
Walker - "Yeah, but then you chase me and it's fun!"
Spence - "Yeah"
They shook hands and got up to go play
My husband and I had to call the paramedics because we were going into convulsions in
the next room laughing so hard and trying not to be heard!

No matter how much fun that experience was,
It can be easier said than done on a regular basis.

In order for me to take charge and lead my all boys household along this path of love

I had better start my day focused on the things of God.

You can bet, that it's my attitude that makes the difference around here!

I must have a Heart for the things of God - and go from rising up until lying down

living the example of that love for my children to really learn it!

I just may have gotten some of my spirit of adventure from these people.

I was born on Guam - my mother rode on the back of a motorcycle fully pregnant with me on the island

They used to put a child's port-a-potty in the back of their jeep and took me camping

It was they who brought me to the lovely island community where I live now

and taught me to find sharks teeth and snorkel for beautiful sea shells.

It's one of the best gifts they've ever given me - right after teaching me to trust the Lord -

and being a wonderful example of what marriage should be

They treasure their family

This year - they celebrate their 45th Wedding Anniversary

My father bought her a very special ring. (Diamonds are her love language- for real)

Anyway, when asked about it he said that she deserved it

- as it turns out

it was his Africa money which paid for the ring.

I happen to know, he has been tucking that money away for many years now.

Planning all along what he would do

- the details of his big adventure.

When it came right down to it - he didn't hesitate to go and get her what she wanted.

She didn't know the cost.

He may have "wanted" Africa (badly) but he "needed" my mother.

He did it because he loves her.

He is right, she deserves it.

She has sacrificed many years serving her family - loving her husband.

She has put her family before herself. She has put his needs before her own.

She is the woman who taught me not to ever allow myself to begin to think negative thoughts

about my husband - to love, honor, and yes - submit to him.

(a post for a different day, but godly submission is most cost effective in a godly marriage)

They most certainly are not perfect people.

But they have remained a steadfast godly example.

For their children, and anyone who looks closely, they are a wonderful example of true love.

He told her when she was only 14 and he 16 years old that she was it for him

he is a man of his word.

My parents aren't perfect - but I wouldn't trade them for anything.

One of the most important things that my mother has done - is to consistently pray for her husband

Over 45 years she has prayed for the small things in his life and the big things!

There is no doubt in my mind that NOT EVERY year has been full of romance

I know first hand that on either side, they've made sacrifices for each other

They each have their faults that could cause a problem here and there

They've had some whopper fights over the years

Neither of them has had to go very long without hearing "I love you"

Each of them has known respect and security.

To him, she will always be beautiful

To her, he is the best man in the world

And there is romance

Their children have never for one day worried about them falling out of love

yet I'm so thankful to see them falling in love - again this year!

He may have given up Africa - but he has his big adventure!

While I'm praying for my husband these 31 days of the challenge

I'm praying to be the wife he deserves me to be

I'm praying God's blessings on him throughout these 31 days and over the next 45 + years

I'm so grateful to have the opportunity

and I'm praying with you ladies in my group

How to Have a HEART for Your Kids - What it Means That "All Things Work Together For Good" (and what it doesn't mean)

January is moving along at a rapid pace for me! It's a good month for new beginnings -

I can't believe it's already time for the

"How to Have a H.E.A.R.T. for Your Kids" book club

This book is one that has really grabbed "a-hold" of me.

I've read some good parenting books - but this is one that really hits home.
Rachael Carman is a woman after my own heart.

I love the way she thinks- the way she isn't afraid to speak about her failures

and her short comings. She has allowed God to shine through the broken places in her life.

I want that for my life. Lord knows there have been enough cracked and broken

places over the years. It's about time I allow God to use it - in my home, my marriage,

my friendships (both online and off) to allow people to see -

NO MATTER HOW BROKEN

you think you may be - or how unworthy - God can make you whole and He can

use you. He's the God that turns ashes into beauty!

I still have plenty of broken places- you can see them daily if you are around to

take a closer look - but I'm so very grateful for the way God is allowing

some of that broken-ness to be used for His glory.

Oh Yes, about the book:

See, I've been digging through this book and it's one of those I just want

EVERYONE to read! Once in awhile I get excited about a book -

"How to Have a H.E.A.R.T. for Your Kids" is one I want to give the whole world!

If we could all get on board with this, speak honestly about our failures, encourage each other

with godly love, apply the scriptures to our every day life -

what a sweet sweet spirit we could have in this place, in our homes all across

the country, all around the world.

I may be getting a tad dramatic, but I'm feeling dramatic!
I'm ready for some dramatic changes up in here!!!

We need some changes in our hearts - in our homes.

Our children (and spouses) need for us to allow God's light to shine through us.

On a personal note-
Some of you know that we have adopted one of our boys. I'm a big supporter of adoption, and
because of that reason, I've been hesitant to speak/write about anything negative.

We knew that our situation wouldn't be easy when we adopted a child at 8 months who had
been through a terrible ordeal - but as prepared as we thought we were- we become weary at times
I've mentioned that there have been challenges- that it "hasn't always been easy."
I feel strongly that God is leading me to be more open about our situation.

Not because I feel a need to complain, or unload but because I believe God wants people to
know that EVEN in the difficult times, deep in the Hard places - He is THERE

Not because I have to - or even really want to dig deep and open myself up to
criticism - but because it is HIS - my life is not my own- it is His and therefore, when
He is moving and shaking - I don't have a right to keep it to myself. I need to share it just in case
someone else out there needs to hear it - to know they are not alone. I'm no perfect parent.
I mess it up all the time!

We have faced some really tough situations with our baby boy. He is now 6 years old, and
whether it's because of the drugs he was exposed to as he grew or the neglect he experienced
after his birth(a combination of both I believe) He has some very REAL issues
- which means that
WE have some very REAL issues to deal with regularly!
His issues are our issues - that is what family does
God wants to heal him - He's working a miracle in his little life
- but this boy of mine has his own choices to make too and sometimes he stands in his own way.
(sound familiar? don't we all do that at one time or another?)
All the love in the world cannot make him choose what's right.

Some days I know he must feel so proud, as I am proud of him for trying hard to do right.
Other days - I know he must feel as though he is drowning with no end in sight
- as I sometimes do -

On those days when he goes from one thing to the next being destructive - intentionally damaging-
sneaking- lying- seemingly out of control- when all should be well.
It can be incredibly "disheartening"

Romans 8:28
"And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those
who are called according to His purpose."

This verse gets thrown around a lot - and is abused about as much as
"He'll never give us more than we can handle"
(That one is NOT in there y'all- only that He won't give us more "temptation" than we can bear
it does not speak to the trial and hardship in our lives)
He never promised us a rose garden!

This is what I'm getting at-
PARENTING is tough business - It's hard!
We are imperfect people in an imperfect world and there are no magic buttons.

Paul wrote the verse from Romans above - the same Paul who was beaten, imprisoned, tortured -
He was NOT trying to tell us that
"as long as you love Jesus - everything in your life is gonna be hunky-dory!"
Life is hard- our situation is hard - and I don't always handle it right.

God hasn't promised me that it is going to be easy or even that it will work out the way
I want it to - the way WE want it to - but He does promise that we don't have to walk it alone!
He does promise that if we love Him and are called according to HIS PURPOSE -
(people often stop at verse 28 when we really need verse 29 to define it)

Romans 8:29a - "because those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be
conformed to the image of His Son"

This is the good that all things work together for in my life!
It's not the easy road, but it's the only one for me.

It is GOOD to be conformed to the image of Christ
- this is what He is promising for those who love Him!

Philippians 1:6
"Being confident of this very thing that He who has begun a good work in
you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ"

This is what I am now praying (out loud) for my baby and me
that we, by His grace and even through our trials - will be conformed to His image!

And have the Perfect Love of Christ in us - the Imperfect People
So grateful that I get to see glimpses of the miracle He is working - the healing!

Passport to Adventurez- Homeschool Freebies

I've had more inquires as to what our homeschool looks like these days and I wanted to share a couple of

fabulous resources with you. Some are free, or very cheap, and others require a small investment

of just a few dollars to make sure you have the perfect books. We love books!

The one pictured below is the "Passport to the World" book by Craig Froman

Our little book pictured at the top of the page was something I found at the dollar store

(I love the dollar store)

We used an empty container of oatmeal, paper, and Skulpey clay to create our

lovely "leaning tower of Pisa"

We created our own passports that the boys LOVE to "get stamped" as we enter

each new country or continent of study.

Even my 6 year old is learning to find his way around the world with a little fun and creativity!

Sometimes our hair gets messy when we travel. You know how that can be!

One of the things we love the most is eating food from all the different places we visit.

(OK, it's my favorite part anyways, but the boys enjoy it too!)

Don't have a globe? We didn't either - but another trip to the dollar

store provided us with one of those "punch" balloons that blows up round.

I made a paper mache' paste from a little flour, water, and glue

We used strips of newspaper and an old paint brush to help smooth it out.

I love reading to the boys about interesting characters, and events and will pull in

all sorts of fun stories to add to the fun while the kids work on the crafts.

It helps them learn and actually retain what they've learned when they

are busy creating while I read.

The key is to not try to read too much at a time. We do a chapter - or if it is

very detailed - I 'll just do a few paragraphs and then we discuss what we're learning.

One of the most important things we do is to incorporate our Bible verses into our

lessons each day. We also pray for the people of other countries. In order for the boys

to relate to those who live in these far away places - I make good use of the free resources

from the Compassion network - which provides worldwide missions.

At Christmas the boys chose to send a chicken to a family in need - they've learned of

children - like them - who live a very different life and are learning empathy by

praying for these children - they know that not everyone in every country we study

is hungry, or in need, but they do know that they need Jesus. We pray for them.

3 in 30 - Looking at Marriage and Family into the New Year

It's not that I don't always care about my marriage and my family. I do. They are the ones God
has given me. They are my focus - next to my relationship with my Creator.

But, facing a new year- looking back - looking ahead causes one to take a closer look
at where things need to be "tweaked"
Improvement is in order! For me anyways, it is needed.

I keep hearing about this "word for the year" and I've been mulling it over
Improvement - Repair - Progress - Advance - Betterment - and then . . . . . .
"Enhancement"
That sounds better.
I want to "enhance" my marriage, the lives of my children, my relationships.

Enhancement

I believe that's the word for me this year!

In order to "enhance" our life I'll be setting some goals along with the 3in30 girls:

My relationship with Christ must come first and foremost - For me, if I am following after God's heart,
the rest falls into place. Instead of having this as one of my "goals" suffice it to say that it is the thing that
all else must "spring" forth from. Make sense? I'll be concentrating in these categories:

1. Marriage & Family - the enhancement will spring from my relationship with the Lord. I will allow Him to lead and what He is showing me thus far is that there is improvement/ enhancement needed in a few different areas.

- I've been participating in the #31Days to Pray For Your Spouse Challenge -

It inspires me that I need to continue praying scripture over my husband daily -

it will help me to be aware of where he needs my encouragement and support.

I want to support him with my words and actions. (Love this ebook)

- I'm reading the book "How to Have a HEART for Your Kids" -

Beginning January 15, I'll be participating in the online book club and am honored

to be one of the chosen writers to share my thoughts on chapter 4! I am already

learning so much about loving my children better.

- Each of these things listed above, along with searching my heart and letting God

move in it and guide me along the path to love them the way they need me to love them.

He has already shown me that I must keep a better watch on my words and my tone!

2. Homeschool - I'm getting more organized - Little at a time

- This week I put papers in proper binders and I will continue to do so along

with getting other paperwork in order. I work on it at least 15 - 20 min. daily.

3. Writing - This includes the blog and networking with others in the online world.

- I am spending at least an hour or two each day on this.

- I usually am spending at least an hour at night on other writing projects.

- I'll be finished with the ebook for Diva Girls by next Friday, but will continue

my schedule at least three nights a week to finish other projects.

- I've been in search of a paid writing position and it appears that may have been

accomplished- yay! I will continue to pursue it - with follow up phone calls this week.

Organization is the key - I'm making progress slowly but surely

In our Homeschool:

We've been getting down to business again - reading "King Alfred's English" by Lauren White.

A History of the Language We Speak

Even though it is geared to older students grades 7 - 12 (and curious adults) I've been able to take it
just a little at a time and read it out loud to the boys. I also read from the "Passport to the World" book
by Craig Froman

We'll read something interesting about a character such as "Eric the Red" and other vikings -
then I'll use our "History of the Sword" coloring book to keep the boys busy as we discuss what it is we've read. We are learning about various types of ancient "armor" and how it was used by the soldier. We also use our big map to "pin" the area which we are discussing. All the hands on activity helps the boys learn and keeps them interested. They are both excellent books and help me teach the various ages of my boys who are 6 years - 10 years.

We've also been doing some good science experiments - growing crystals - learning about matter - what happens when you change it - and apply heat:

Our homeschool week wouldn't be complete without some time in the outdoors. The boys have made their own bows and arrows (with all this talk about the ancient world and all) - Our nature walk and outdoor photography shoot will complete the week.

Strength - Character in Marriage

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"

Today is day 3 of the 31 days to pray for your spouse challenge. The focus is on

"strength" and praying for the emotional, mental, and physical strength of your spouse.

Some of you may be fortunate enough to have perfect husbands- but, since

we are all imperfect people, it is more likely that you are married to someone who

does suffer at least a few shortcomings.

Praying for your own strength in dealing with life's ups and downs is

important, but it is critical that we also pray for our husbands to have strength in

dealing with everyday demands along with the more difficult "mountains" we

all face at one time or another.

I recently came across a blog post that quickly got my attention.

The post title is "The 50 Best Marriage Quotes of 2011"

from "To Love, Honor, and Vacuum" by Sheila Gregorie

One of the quotes that Sheila points out #31 is this:

"How we handle our husbands shortcomings

says more about our own character

than our husbands"

Let that sink in for just a moment.

About 2 years into my (now almost 12 year) marriage,

we hit some rocky road. My son was a baby, and life was

a little stressful. I disagreed with the way my husband handled

several issues (bless his heart)

Being the quiet, submissive personality that I am

(some of you just fell over laughing)

I immediately handed it all over to the Lord.

OK, now for the truth- I griped and whined and lost my temper.

Frequently.

I was angry and I let it begin to fester.

I nurtured that thing.

It got to the point where he really just couldn't do anything

right. I wasn't going to be happy with him because I was hurt

and angry. I felt entitled to my anger and hurt.

It was obvious that I was right and he had been wrong.

He even agreed with me!

About the time I began to realize (none too soon)

that I was making myself (not to mention him) miserable-

I finally hit my knees and asked for God's help in releasing those hurts.

My mother (who is still happily married to my father after 40+ years)

always told me not to let myself begin to think negative

thoughts about my husband.

It was a little late for that. It had snowballed, and I had

nurtured my anger to the point that I couldn't begin to

think anything positive about him!

God laid it on my heart to start with just one thing each day

that I could be thankful for in my husband.

Every day I would choose one thing that I loved or respected about him.

Even if it were very small and simple.

It started out pretty pitiful - sorta like :

"Thank you God that Mark doesn't beat me"

(I told you - I was angry)

I repeated the praise several times throughout the day

and especially if I started to get angry about

something important (like that he forgot to pick up the milk)

Ladies, let's be honest.

When we decide to be hurt and angry,

it is not a pretty picture.

We cannot be easy to live with at that point!

After awhile it got a bit easier.

"Thank you Lord Jesus that my Mark is such a hard worker"

"Thank you for giving me a husband who is kind and generous"

Now, it is difficult for me to remember what the big deal was in

the first place. Why did I allow myself to get so far gone?

Like my mother said, "Don't allow yourself to begin to think

negative thoughts about your husband, or it will get away from you"

You see, satan doesn't want us to have successful families.

He doesn't want you to have a close relationship with your

husband or with the Lord.

But, our God is bigger than that!

And Praise the Lord, it is true:

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"

Phil. 4:13

I want to encourage you that no matter what your circumstances are-

or how big the troubles in your marriage. . . .

OUR GOD IS BIGGER!

Ringing in the New Year - Watching the (big) "ball drop" picture above - Best ball drop ever!

We are committing to watching more sunsets together during 2012

"Prayer is one of the greatest privileges we have as believers. Having the ability to access the throne
of grace with confidence whenever we have a need or a want to offer up praise - what an incredible
blessing we have."

This statement is one of the first of many truths which speaks to my heart in Ashley Pichea's book
"31 Days to Build A Better Spouse"

The title is catchy. Whether you believe your spouse is in need of a makeover - a remodel - a complete
overhaul - or you simply want to be a loving wife praying blessings over the life of the one God has given
you - the place to start in order to effect change - is with yourself.

By looking inward, and allowing God to work in your own heart you will see what it is you need to be praying for your spouse. It will serve to draw you in to a closer walk with the Lord - facilitate more love
and a better attitude in your heart toward your marriage, and help you be more like Christ- which is
the main goal we should pattern all others after in the first place.

I'm starting the New Year off right, with a 31 day commitment to pray for my husband each and every
day throughout January. I am thankful for the man God has given me. It's about time I put a serious
effort into praying God's blessings over him.

1. How long have you been writing?
I have been writing “publicly” for a few years. Writing was always something I’ve enjoyed and was naturally “good” at, but only in the past few years have I felt the call of God to publish my writing.

2. Did you always know you wanted to be a writer or when/how did you figure that out?
I’ve always enjoyed writing, but it was in January 2009 that God led me to writing as a means of ministry.

3. How has being a writer influence/changed your life?
Knowing that my words have the power to build up or break down has definitely impacted me. A few months into my blogging adventure, my blog turned sour as I began to use it as an outlet to vent about my frustrations. God used my wonderful mother-in-law to bring this to light, and since I have adopted Ephesians 4:29 as my online/writing mantra: “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a wordas is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.”

4. What piece of advice would you give to someone who is considering writing their first book?

Don’t write for yourself. If you are writing a book for the sake of seeing your name/words in print, then you probably shouldn’t be writing. Let God be the purpose and driving force behind your writing.

5. How will you measure the success of your book?

This is a difficult question, but I think it comes back to perspective. For me, seeing just one marriage grow more Christ-centered makes the whole process worth it. It can’t be about numbers or money for me, even those are the things I’m often trapped into counting. It has to be about Christ – about seeing it used for His purpose and His glory.

6. Who has been your biggest supporter?

My online friends have been amazing in supporting me as I’ve published this first eBook. Since it is an electronic book, most of my “in real life” friends don’t “get” it.

7. How do you handle criticism of your writing?

Thankfully, I haven’t had to deal with any criticism to date. When it comes, though, I know that it doesn’t really matter as long as I’ve given my best for God’s glory.

8.What is the name of your (new) book?

31 Days to Build a Better Spouse – Accessing the Power of Prayer to Build Up Your Spouse

9. What was your inspiration for writing this book?

I have found that when I pray for my husband, our relationship is so much better – my eyes are focused on Christ and not on his “faults.” Praying the Word of God is one way that we can know absolutely that we are praying in accordance with God’s will. 31 Days to Build a Better Spouse came out of my desire to help others pray the Word of God for their spouses, strengthening and encouraging marriages.

10. Can you share with us a personal tid-bit about what drew you to this particular topic?

11. How did you settle on the title?

I wanted something that would allow readers to pray over the course of a month {31 days}, so I started brainstorming ideas on Twitter, attempting to play off the popular #31DBBB hashtag.

12. Did the writing of this book change you? How?

I hope so! As I wrote, I prayed. I prayed for my husband, I prayed for myself, and I prayed for those who will read and pray through the book.

13. What is your overall goal for your readers with regards to the book?

I want to see lives changed for God’s glory – I want others to not only be praying for their spouses but also to learn how to pray the Word of God.

14. Do you have anything else in the works? (what? when?)

During the month of October, I wrote “31 Days to Pray for Your Pastor” as a daily newsletter. I’m planning to publish it soon as an eBook. I also have a few other ideas brewing for future 31 Days to Pray series, as well as a few other books in rough draft form.

15. If you could choose just one thing from the book for your readers to walk away with - what would that be and why?

I want my readers to walk away knowing the power of prayer, specifically the power of praying the Word of God.

Favorite Photo's 2011

Rounding up a few of my favorite pictures from 2011 and reminiscing over the moments represented.
That is the key for me - the photos are about slices of our life - looking through the lens and stopping
time . . . . just for a moment!

These may not be the BEST shots, but they are my shots of our special moments:

This year, we were fortunate enough to go and bear witness of the last space shuttle. It was a
bitter-sweet experience for us, as both my husband and myself grew up in Orlando and have such
fond memories of the space program. We were grateful to share those memories with our children.

This photo represents more than that to me though, it represents the brotherly love shared as my
oldest takes a moment (captured in time) to show his little brother how to use the binoculars to spot
the launch pad.

Next, well the quality isn't great- not the best camera ever. We handed it to some strangers and I took their
picture and they took ours. Thank you! Who-ever you are! This is the only family photo for 2011!!!
We were on an impromptu little get-a-way to the east coast in Palm Beach.
It was a wonderful time together. I love the memory.

And then - we came across this beautiful creature on our way to church. He was perched in a tree right
down the street from our house. He's actually landed in our yard with a fish in his mouth after grabbing it
out of the waterway behind the house - but I couldn't get the camera fast enough to capture that one! I
love the majesty and posture for the American Bald Eagle!

God-bumps:

This picture is one of my very favorites ever because it represents something more precious than
anything else - the day my Walker gave his heart and life to Jesus. We were spending the day at
Warm Mineral Springs together (where Ponce de Leon thought he'd found the fountain of youth) for
a homeschool field trip in the great outdoors. We prayed together while sitting in the water and snapped
a picture of the butterfly as we discussed that he too was a "new creature"! My son also took a
handful of moss and let it go over the small waterfall and explained that it represented his sins being
"washed away"! Precious moments.

Ok, now these are not my photos, but my sons photos, but they are so special because
he got to go on an adventure of a lifetime this year - My parents took him
(on my dream trip-just sayin) to Alaska! There are too many special ones to choose but
these are a few of my favorite-

It restores my soul to sit in front of this view and pray as I watch my family play
around the island God gave me (ok, it's not mine- um, but it is)
because I asked Him for it when I was seven!

Every time I drove over this bridge with my family as a little girl (headed to our vacation spot)
the special salt smell would fill the air and a unique feeling would come over me
I knew I was home
now I'm here with my own husband and children
God is good!
What a gift He has given me

So, my number one pick for 2011 represents so much that is special to me:
- quiet time with my Creator
- special time with my family
- our adventures
- exploring God's creation and soaking up it's beauty
-watching dolphins play
- seeing beautiful birds soar high
- listening to my children laugh
- watching as my good husband gently instructs his boys in the ways of nature
- gratitude for the gifts He has given me
- setting aside time to reflect on all of the above

Thank you Lord with all of my heart!

Leftover Turkey Casserole

What to do with all that leftover turkey? Make "Leftover Turkey Casserole"

Easy Peasy!

First of all, you put on a big pot of noodles to boil - I chose egg noodles cause I like them.

Recruit some help from the gang, cause cooking is much more fun that way.

We had some leftover chopped onion from Christmas dinner, so I threw it in the pan with some butter

and then added broken up bite sized turkey chunks!

While that warms up and browns just a bit on low in the skillet - get your hired help

to add a can of "Cream of Chicken" (or Mushroom) to another skillet

Slowly stir in a 1/2 cup of Chicken Broth (or Milk if you don't have broth left over)

sprinkle in a cup (or two) of shredded cheddar cheese

It makes a lovely cheese sauce!

Which you add to your drained noodles along with the turkey

and onion mixture and stir!

Spread the mixture of turkey and noodles into a favorite casserole dish,

Then you get one of your little "sui chefs" to sprinkle on some Durkey onions-

Place it into an oven set pre-heated at 350 degrees until the Durkey onions are browned

(about 15 minutes or so, just long enough to get the pots washed up)

And, dinner is served!

They'll eat it up! It's easy to switch out with chicken, or even a can of tuna too.

You can add mushrooms or broccoli if you'd like.

I served it with leftover homemade yeast rolls and sliced tomato.

I love the tiny shells we found and the toy
soldier reminds me of the ones I made as a child!
The long skinny shell was found on the beach in
Costa Rica while on our honeymoon!

When our homeschool friends, Carrie from Young Living Oil Lady and her awesome kids

were here- we found these cool shells and later painted and glued them together to make a

little shell angel! It's a wonderful memory of our time together -

Many of the ornaments on our tree hold special meaning - even if that meaning is simply

time spent together creating it !

The boys were excited to receive the rest of the

"Adventures of Munford" series -

It's an incredibly fun way to teach them about important moments in history.

I don't know about you, but we still have Christmas to do with other family!

My daddy gave me a camera to replace my broken one - I'm thrilled to have a real camera now-

My first SLR- It's a dream come true for me!

My sweet husband bought me a new computer which I desperately needed for

homeschool, writing, and of course- blogging!

All in all - we had an awesome time together and although we certainly had more presents

than we truly needed, we didn't forget the real reason for the season.

I am happy to say that I believe each of our children really "got it" this year

We will continue to put Christ first in our home

I know from experience that all else falls right into place after that!

I pray in earnest for that very same peace in each of your homes this year

Beginning on January 15, I am joining up with a team of ladies to study

Ephesians with Good Morning Girls - This will be my personal quiet time Bible Reading

On Januray 1st I'm beginning the 31 days of prayer for my spouse!

How in the world will I get it all done? Well,

I've been participating in an online community who help encourage me

to set and reach my goals. You may have met the crew from 3 in 30 by Ashley Pichea

I would like to encourage you to check them out, if you haven't already and link up with

us as we set three goals at a time (divide and conquer) and encourage each other!

My goals for the month of January:

1. Personal Growth-

a) Continue quiet time with Jesus & praying for others by doing the Ephesians

study with the Good Morning Girls group

b) Continue pursuing my Health improvement goals by drinking more water, exercising 3x week for

20 minutes, and eating healthier meals (see meal planning binder above)

c) Pray for my husband and grow closer to him using the 31 days to BBS ebook (this is listed

under "Personal Growth" because it really is about God working in MY heart)

2. Homefront-

a) Beginning the "Have a Heart for Your Kids" book club will help me continue along with the

goals set forth in our home. I want it to be a place where my children are free to pursue their

interests, where they are safe to be themselves, and where we learn about the world around us

as we grow together and closer to Jesus- a place full of God's love.

b) I have a lot of cleaning and organizing to do- see above ideas for organization, I'll be using

them along the way and plan to tackle one room, closet, basket at a time. This will last longer

than a month & will be an ongoing project in our home. Photos will follow :)

c) Stay on track with our homeschool - Organization will help with this goal as well. The children

are pretty much on schedule from the loose plans I've laid out - mostly, I just need to organize the

paperwork - the never ending paperwork!

3. Writing/Blogging-

a) Finish ebook, yes, I have an ebook in the works. It isn't the one I started. God took over and

it is on a completely different topic than the one "I" originally started out to do, I'll fill you in soon!

But, it grew out of my desire (and God's) to write for a new site called "Diva Girls" - I sat to

write my first post for MamaKautz and- the ebook was born. It will be done soon. My world is full

of boys and all that entails, I had no idea that I had such a deep desire to reach young women, but

I do, I really do. Praying that God will bless it as I know for a fact it has come from Him!

b) Attend the conferences listed above - (even though they are not strictly blog conf.) it is all related

for me.

c) Listen carefully to God's guidance in my writing, so that it is a service and a ministry for Him and others. I want Adventurez and everything that stems from it to be a source of encouragement and help

as I seek to share His love with families.

*I realize that I may not accomplish everything I set out to do. I may not end up with the most

organized house on the block (ever), my household will not run perfectly as it does not have a

perfect captain. With God's help and your encouragement there will be improvement!

The Greatest Gift - A True Story

There is so much going on right now, city sidewalks, busy sidewalks and all that. . . .
The children, the decorating, the shopping and planning, never mind the cleaning, cooking,
working, schooling, bill paying . . . . .

It's so important that we *S* L*O*W* down - even if it doesn't seem possible - to take it
all in and to remember what is important - to think about the year past, things accomplished,
things we want to improve. We need to look to the future, to make plans, set goals. We need to
BE In The Moment with our families. . . . . so much to do, so many important things to check
off our list- it's easy to forget.

I had a fresh reminder recently.

One of the things I have "in the works" is contributing to a new site that has recently
launched- DIVA Girls - It's different for me, as I am always surrounded by boys - and used to
writing to Moms. This is a site for girls ages tween to young adult. In brainstorming as to what I
want to write about - I've been amazed to see where the reflection has taken me.

One of the most important moments of my life was brought back from the recesses of my mind-

Once upon a time, when I was a girl.-a long long time ago- :) I was fourteen years old - to be exact. I had a close friend named Jeffrey. He was my neighbor. Jeffrey was cool. He had a lot of friends, and everyone loved being around him.

I was, not so "cool". I went to Christian school, and I dressed differently and believed differently than
most of the other kids who ran around our neighborhood. But, Jeffrey didn't seem to care about that.
He thought I was pretty cool.

I became a Christian at an early age. I got fired up- excited about the truth in my life - and commenced
to telling anyone and everyone who would listen about what Jesus could do for them. I NEVER
hesitated, or worried about what they would think of me. It wasn't about me, it was about making
sure that they knew about the love of Christ. I'd never considered whether or not it was "cool".

Until Jeffrey.

For the first time in my life, I was concerned about what someone would think. I didn't want to tell
Jeffrey about my Jesus. I wanted him to know, I just didn't want to be the one to tell him. He thought
I was "cool" - and I was enjoying that idea for the first time.

God had other plans. He began to pull at my heart. I stomped my foot in disgust and frustration.
Really? Can't I just enjoy this for what it is without having to drag "Jesus" into it?

For the first time in my life, I did not want to share Christ.

The Lord continued to knock, knock, knock at the door of my heart. He continued until I threw my
hands up. I literally looked up and said, "FINE!" (stomp stomp) "YOU bring up the subject, and I'll
obey and tell Jeffrey about you!!!" (insert more stomping)

The next day. Yes. Out of NO-Where, Jeffrey mentioned God and asked me what I thought. Seriously?
Again, I looked up. "Thanks a lot God", and I began to share His love with my "cool" friend.

I told him that we are all sinners. I told him that Jesus died to pay the price for those sins. I told him
about grace, and what it means to accept God's love and forgiveness, That it's a free gift -
like with any gift, you don't earn it - you just accept it -from the heart. I told him what it is to walk
with the Lord.

We cried together. Jeffrey got down on his knees and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior.We
prayed together. We spent days and days talking about his "new life" in Christ - brothers and sisters- children of the King.

It was "cool".

Flash forward six short months - I moved away with my family. After the first year of being gone- I
returned for Spring break to visit my friends in Florida. One of the first places I went, was to see
Jeffrey. I ran to the door and was so excited to see him.

His mother answered - and her face fell. She started to cry and told me that they had tried and
tried to find me but hadn't been able to.

Jeffrey had been struck by lightening. My friend Jeffrey was dead.

The FIRST thing that went through my mind - and the thing that STILL today makes me stop in
my tracks- I almost didn't tell him!

I was able to tell his mother about my experience with Jeffrey. I told her Jeffrey was with Jesus.
She wasn't a Christian, but, she was relieved to hear that her only son had spent time on his knees
giving his heart to the Lord, accepting God's forgiveness. She wasn't ready to pray with me, but she
held on tightly to the knowledge that I believe WHOLE heartedly that I will see my friend again! I pray
God was able to use it to reach her.

Though I ALMOST didn't tell Jeffrey about Christ- Thank God for His faithfulness - He kept
after me until I obeyed Him. You see, He knew Jeffrey's time was close, and

so did the enemy.

You getting the picture? We must keep our eyes on Jesus. We must
listen carefully to His urging.

We cannot do that if we are all caught up in too much "busy".

At Christmas and throughout the year - we need to spend time on our knees - and we need to pay
attention to the urging from the Lord - People need the love of Christ - God needs us to show them!

I don't believe you will ever regret time spent sharing God's love with others -
but I know first hand, that you will regret it if you miss sharing Him when you are supposed to.

Are you slowing down this busy season to listen to Him? Are you sharing Jesus with your family
and others around you?

He really is the greatest gift of all!

And I count my gifts - to 1000 Gifts and beyond. . . . .

I am thrilled to see my boys soaking up the real "spirit of Christmas" and wanting to do for
those in need! We are learning about children and families from other countries and the boys
are giving up some of their Christmas to give to Compassion -

31 Days to Pray - For Your Spouse Challenge!

Would you believe me if I told you that you could improve your marriage with 5 minutes a day?

Especially with all the hoop-la going on over the Christmas holidays - many of us get stressed out

or super busy and somewhere along the way we can forget to really connect with our spouses!

(you know it's true!)

Whether you are an "old married couple" comfortable in your 'ole shoes, or newly weds who

face a whole other set of stresses (both good and bad) 5 minutes per day CAN make a difference!

What could be better for your marriage than taking a month to intentionally pray scripture over

your spouse?

Nuttin' Honey!

If you need to do some forgiving, some supporting, or even get rid of negative

thoughts and feelings - there is just no better way to do it than through focused prayer!
And what better time - than at the beginning of a fresh new year?

When you combine prayer with the Word of God, and some Christian sisters (and brothers)- there is

an awesome amount of power behind it!

How do I know? Well, besides the fact that I'm one of those "old married's", I am actually

happy! Not because I have a perfect husband, or a perfect marriage- but, a perfect God -

I've learned a little bit about applying His principles to my marriage. I fully believe
EVERY couple can benefit from this type of positive, uplifting, focused (5 minute) challenge!

The other reasons I know it is true are -

Philippians 4: 6-7

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication

with thanksgiving - let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of

God, which passes (ie. surpasses) all understanding, will guard your hearts and

minds in Christ Jesus.

I don't know about you, but when I know I have truly turned something or someone over to

God, I have a tendency to handle the situation better and I certainly handle things better when I

have a peaceful feeling in my heart and my mind is at ease!

Matthew 18: 20

"For when two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the

midst of them"

So, standing with others - gathered in the name of Jesus - brings the presence of the Almighty God

right into the situation! That's powerful!

Out Of The Mouths Of (My) Babes

Do your children ever teach you a lesson? Do they come up with something you know in your

heart is something you SHOULD have been all over in the first place?

Yeah, me too!

It happened (again) tonight, and I figured I should share it with you.

So - You know how people get grumpy sometimes around the holidays?

They get rushed, they can be short, and even sometimes flat out rude. There are times,

I think especially this time of year- when you are out running errands- minding your own

business and taking care of life's little details - you can run into

folks who are down right ornery. It can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

It can even mess with your Christmas mo-jo!

Know what I mean?

Well - tonight the boys and I ran to Sam's Club

(one of my favorite places)

to pick up things we need. I was feeling grateful that we were able to get them.

And then we arrived at the exit door.

The one where the ~~guard~~ employee stands to check you out and make sure

your cart matches your receipt.

I don't know about everywhere else but- At OUR Sam's Club -

they usually draw a smiley face on the receipt if the kids are there.

For some reason - known only to them - this has become a BIG DEAL to my boys.

They discuss who's turn it is to hand over the receipt - and sometimes even ask

for an extra smiley face for their brother who had been the odd man out that particular time.

(I think it's sweet and thoughtful)

I have one child who is more "shy" (at first) than the others who are NOT at all.

This son of mine has had a difficult time speaking to adults unless he is very very comfortable with them.

You know the kid who hides behind his mother's leg? That's him!

Well, tonight (after spending too much money at Sam's)

this shy boy went excitedly up to the attendant at the door and proudly presented the receipt-

upon doing so - he had the nerve to ask the man for a smiley face!

-speaking directly to him was such a BIG DEAL that I almost didn't realize what the man said.

And I quote-

"Don't bug me about that!"

He wasn't joking. He was not smiling. He was dead serious as he towered over my first grader!

Several things went through my head.

What came out of my mouth was "Merry Christmas"!

(maybe a tad sarcastic)

Then the man said (to my son)

"I always do the smiley face- but not if you bug me about it kid"

Then I said, "He's just a child- one young enough to get excited over a smiley face"

And I left.

As we were walking out - (and I'm getting madder and madder by the second.)

THE NERVE of that RUDE HORRIBLE MEAN MAN to speak to my baby like that!!!

I'm thinking "Sam wouldn't like that at ALL"

"I just spent good money in there- again"

"I bet his manager would have something to say about his behavior!"

and maybe even

"People like that shouldn't be allowed to work with the general public"

"Child Hater"

Just about the time I was good and riled up - I asked my son if the man had hurt his feelings by being

grumpy

Guess what he said?!

"No ma'am"

" I think the man was really tired, because he was kind of old and he had to stand there all day"

I replied with an "Oh"

He added, "I think they should get him a chair, then he'd be more comfortable while he has to

work hard checking all those receipts"

We bowed our heads and prayed for the man at the door.

We prayed that he would feel strong and well. We prayed that he would feel happy

and that the love of Christ would surround him and touch his heart and his life.

We thanked God for being able to shop at all, and I thanked Him profusely for working

in the hearts of my children then I thanked Him for the lessons He

teaches me on a regular basis. . . . . . . .

Counting down to Christmas - Advent - is wonderful to do with your children!

But, it's not the cute crafts that we like so much

It's not the fact that it can be enjoyed by various ages

or even the fact that the simple to do crafts are made from things you mostly already have on hand

or that they all relate to Christmas and tell the Christmas story in depth.

We love that not only is it good for them to enjoy working on together

but the scripture reading that goes along with each craft and the devotions

which go along with each day are really sinking in.

They are learning more about the Savior and growing in grace and love!!!

Humbled by True Gratitude

Some of you know that I have suffered from RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) for the past ten years. You know that I am waiting on my healing, believing that God want's me whole and well, able to do what I need to for my family, to serve Him, to be my best.

I try to give God the glory. I try to fight pain and allow Him to use me, even if I'm stuck in bed.

I try not to complain.

I try. And I fail.

I fall miserably short of what He expects of me. I get short with my children. I complain far too often about not feeling well. (As if saying it out loud actually makes it any better)

I've had some awesome encouragement from many of you. You can't know how much of a blessing your kind words mean to me. You can't know how much hope and joy they give me or how they confirm to me what God is up to in my life. It means more than you can possibly know.

Once in awhile, I come across someone who is walking on faith - so much so - that I become painfully aware of the places in my life that need improving. It becomes clear to me that I've just scratched the surface of what it means to fully trust Him.

Sara's case was the first I'd read about Ankylosing Spondylitis

Now, as introduced to me by Rebecca of Moms Mustard Seeds - I'm reading about her

Choosing Thankfulness

An excerpt-
“Choose thankfulness.” The two words that I had sensed should be my motto through this journey of pain and illness lodged themselves in my heart. I shook my head. How do I choose thankfulness when I could hardly see or walk? Several minutes later when I couldn’t shake those two words, I sighed and stood up. With one hand holding my back and the other gripping the dresser and then the wall for support, I hobbled toward the staircase. “Lord, thank you for my family…and for all who lift me up in prayer. Thanks for the many friends who stand ready to help at a moment’s notice. Thank you for good doctors and insurance… And thank you that despite the pain I can still get around.”

You see? Boy am I am wimp!!! What a wonderful testimony of grace, love and gratitude!

. . . . . I humbled as I count to 1000 gifts and beyond . . . .

#69 for medicine that helps me walk and get around
#70 for access to care when it's needed
#71 a bathtub full of hot water and jets that wash away pain
#72 little boys who care and love with soft touches and tender hearts
#73 a husband who never falters and is always on the ready to help, who doesn't
complain when I need rest, and jumps right in even after a full day of work
#74 a friend who brings special healing oil and prayers
#75 friends who lift me up in prayer on a regular basis and give support and love
#76 fresh air and sunshine that lifts my spirits and helps me remember to be grateful
#77 that I'm surrounded by loved ones
#78 for a healing to come - I believe- I believe!
#79 For examples like Anita who testify to His faithfulness and show me how to walk - how to live
#80 constant reminders from up above that I am loved and I cared for -
#81 I'm a child of the living King -

And so, I walk on - in faith knowing that He cares for the tiny sparrow
How much more then must He care for me, His daughter?
How much more does He care for you, my friend?

In my life this week… well, You really have to read THIS to see what special adventure we've been up to! Suffice it to say, I highly recommend taking strangers into your home. I just can't say enough good stuff about our special visit with homeschool friends - we met through blogging and twitter.

Yes, it's different. Yes, it could be risky. Yes, it was one of the most amazing times ever.

My husband would have thought I'd lost my mind, but- he's met me - and quite frankly, just wasn't THAT surprised when I made the announcement that I had invited "internet" friends to come and stay with us. He had a few questions. It came down to, "if you're sure" - and I was.

You can meet my friend Carrie here on her blog - she talks about homeschool, her heart for Jesus, and health -n- wellness!

I don't share this because I think you should invite any 'ole body into your home- I certainly am not interested in taking chances with my family. But, there are some people that I know for a fact God has sent into my life- using this blog & the homeschool community on Twitter. My point is, when you know someone is a gift from God, you don't have to question it. I'm so very thankful for people He puts in my life- from church, from the neighborhood, local area, sports with the kids, and here.

Thank you sweet people for reaching out- to me, to each other. Keep encouraging and lifting others up and God will use it!

In our homeschool this week… well, see above - this link- and. . . . . we took our company on a tour of the Boca Grande Lighthouse from 1890

We learned about the history of our area - which includes the Calusa Indians, who were responsible for the death of Ponce de 'Leon and were fierce warriors and rulers of many tribes across Florida. They used local shells - like the Welk for tools, weapons, and necessities.

We learned to identify some species of shell and sharks teeth fossils too! We also collected a good supply to send home with our new friends! (we love sharks teeth and shells, but it's even more fun to find friends to share them with)

Before our friends arrived- I met up with a group of homeschoolers from one of my Yahoo groups at Legoland, FL! What a blessing! That was an awesome time for the boys and an affordable way to enjoy another adventure.

It took care of a lot of Geography this week! (for real it went well with what we'd been reading)

We are also working on our Truth in Tinsel ebook and enjoying the crafts that go with it each day!

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… have fun together! Make fun homeschool friends - let me know if your kiddos need "pen pals" from Florida - we still have another "Florida box" to get out to some friends in Georgia. We'll be happy to exchange "state/city" info with you as well if you'd like. (I think it is a fun way to do some extra geography while we're at it)

My favorite thing this week was…

Questions/thoughts I have… why is it that I discover a problem with my Christmas lights only AFTER I've worked for hours putting them all on the tree?

I’m praying for…there are so many people hurting right now. The holidays have a way of stressing people out, bringing up heartache for those who've lost loved ones and more. I think this year, there are more people and families hungry and hurting than ever.

Praying for several friends who have various requests and need support like my sweet friend Renee, healing for others like Ells, others who have left comments and reached out here on the blog for prayer, and support. *Please feel free to do so!

and as always- I'm praying for my children, lifting up my youngest whom we adopted at eight months. (He's still struggling with issues that are NOT his fault) There is progress being made *Praise Jesus!

Speaking of adoption - I'm praying for my new friend Natasha from Mother of Seven who has been a wealth of information and encouragement with our little guy. God is working a miracle in our baby and in our home.

Praying for our upcoming project, well- it's Amanda's project from The Pelsers but, I am fortunate enough to be able to participate by contributing an article - Beginning in January - we'll be doing an online book club study on this book:

*I do hope you'll consider participating with us - it'll be a great time of bonding and support as we learn more about really loving our children in the way God intended! Very Exciting!!!
