ok so this thing called primwega keeps popping up a lot when i go on the internet. like,while im on the internet, this ad thing comes up and it says ad by primawega. how do i get rid of it? i have windows vista and i already tried going on my control panel to delete it, but its not there, i checked multiple times please help!

Security firms G Data Software and Sophos have released free tools that eliminate a vulnerability in an operating-system component called the Windows Shell for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. According to Microsoft, the vulnerability exists because Windows incorrectly parses shortcuts in such a way that malicious code may be executed whenever the icon of a specially crafted shortcut is displayed.

Microsoft introduced an automated tool of its own on July 21 that will block any attempts to exploit the vulnerability of .LNK shortcut files. however, the software giant's homegrown fix replaces the graphics-based icons on the PC's Task and Start menu bars with generic white icons.

the free tool downloads from G Data and Sophos likewise block the automatic execution of malicious code but display the PC icons in their usual graphic form. "Microsoft's current workaround leaves systems almost unworkable with broken-looking icons," noted Graham Cluley, a senior technology consultant at Sophos.

Warning Users

Microsoft warned earlier this month that the shortcut vulnerability in Windows can be exploited locally through a malicious USB drive, or remotely via network shares and WebDAV. moreover, an exploit can be included in specific document types that support embedded shortcuts, the software giant's security team said.

the free third-party tools from Sophos and G Data, which run alongside existing antivirus software, will intercept any shortcut files that contain the exploit and even warn users about the executable code that attempted to run. For example, the G Data tool displays safe desktop symbols in their usual form but activates a red warning icon if a malicious mechanism is detected.

Fixing the problem is important because the vulnerability gives cybercriminals a wide range of possibilities for infecting a PC, noted Ralf Benzmueller, head of G Data SecurityLabs. "they only need to make sure that a .LNK file is displayed on the computer," Benzmueller explained. "the file which the link refers to does not necessarily need to be on the computer — it can even be on the Internet."

Enterprise Exposure

the Stuxnet and Dulkis worms, as well as the Chymin Trojan horse, have been exploiting this vulnerability to help spread and infect computer systems, Cluley said. Stuxnet made headlines recently because it targeted the infrastructure for critical facilities such as power plants, he said.

"There's a warning for all computer users here," Cluley said. "Details of how to exploit the security hole are now published on the web, meaning it is child's play for other hackers to take advantage and create attacks."

since this operating-system design flaw also applies to Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server R2, IT administrators need to take steps to ensure that networks are not vulnerable to shortcut exploits.

"in a company's IT network, for example, it is enough to save a primed and infected file on the network drive," Benzmueller explained. "Even basic software — like word-processing programs and e-mail clients — provide the possibility to display shortcuts. We expect that this vulnerability will be massively exploited shortly."

Symantec reveals the latest updates of Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security to the press.

Sydney Australia, July 27, 2010 - Performance and Protection is still the main focus of Norton Internet Security products as Symantec keep one step ahead of the cyber criminals. as the threat landscape continues to move away from traditional problems, Norton continues with their reputation technology as their database of files continues to grow. Reputation based technology involves standalone, heuristic and behavioural reputation as it uses the Norton Community to flag safe files among their large community. one feature of Norton’s products is that no matter what method of download you use, it will scan the file, ensuring increased protection.

In terms of protection, Norton continue to rank #1 and in 2009, they were the only internet security software to prevent all threats, according to the comprehensive testing done by Dennis Labs. Two of the main threats to internet users include Google poisoning and polymorphic malware. Google poisoning is circumventing the controls of search engines by pushing hits up of “fake” webpages. through keyword stuffing and the creation of bogus websites, this forces their rank to appear in the top two pages of Google. if a user clicks on this webpage, it may load malware on the system such as fake anti-virus programs. These fake anti-virus programs will then inform the user they have a security threat and that only their program can remove it. Some less than savvy computer users then pay this company to remove the “threat”. thanks to the technology of Norton products, it can detect these fake sites and polymorphic malware (e.g. Fake internet security pop-ups) and prevent the user from getting duped.

Users who don’t use any internet security products are also adding to the problem whether through bot nets or spreading the malicious software. this is where Symantec have changed tact a little by offering these users some impressive free downloads. Norton SafeWeb Lite (safeweb.norton.com/) is one of these products and allows user to check whether a site is fake or if it is a real site that has been infected. this program will inform the user the following simple messages that include Warning, Caution, Safe or Untested. this utility is also available for FaceBook and scans the links on your wall and links from friends to ensure that the sites are safe. It’s definitely a great tool to alert your friend’s network.

Another free tool is Norton Power Eraser that removes deeply embedded and difficult to remove crimeware from PC’s. I tested this on a colleagues PC who was infected by a fake anti-virus program. unfortunately they were not protected but thankfully Norton Power Eraser removed this malware with no issue whatsoever. for parents, the Norton Online Family (another free tool) is available to assist parents with children to access the internet. Although not a free tool, Norton Rescue Me which comes with Norton Internet Security allows the user to create a bootable device (e.g. USB or DVD) and to recover a badly infected computer. thanks to the WIN PE O/S, this recovery tool is quite small and can be used by everyone due to the simplistic wizards.

The interface of Norton Internet Security has been slightly revamped and once again, no comprise has been made to installation, speed or performance. there is an interesting new feature called the Protection Map which highlights the number of threats from various cities across the world which can be limited to your part of the world. At the bottom of the map is a ticker system that displays the city name and the number of threats. this new feature is made possible thanks to GEO-IP which log suburbs and mobile towers from the ISP.

The Norton products have also integrated other Norton family products into a central console such as Online Family, Online Backup and SafeWeb. The “Know before you go” feature is great for entering the URL of a new web site in order to determine whether an unfamiliar website is safe or not. Symantec have also added a new reputation scan graph of files on your computer which displays the trust level, age and prevalence according to the Norton Community which is a useful scan to both tech heads and novices. Thankfully, the interface is still as simplistic as ever and Norton have carefully balanced the accessible to all users, still allowing advanced users to tweak certain settings.

My anti-virus protection already removed SoWar malware and restored my homepage settings, but still my browser displays on the top bar the name "SoWar Browser" instead of "Internet Explorer".

And how can I re-enable task manager? my system reports that this was disabled, and that was after SoWar hijacked my browser homepage settings.

A surprising percentage of organizations are still running desktops with the XP Service Pack 2 OS, which Microsoft said it would no longer patch as of Tuesday this week.

Fiberlink Communications, which sells a service that lets organizations find out what software versions are on their endpoints, surveyed 500,000 computers of their customers and found that nearly 17 percent were running XP SP2. Fiberlink customers include companies such as Pepsi, Volkswagen and Bayer.

“We’ve been going out to our customers and telling them this for the last couple of months,” said Chuck Brown, a product manager for Fiberlink, which publishes tools that help companies to migrate to Windows 7. “You can’t make people move. you can only give them the information to make an informed decision.”

Fiberlink’s survey found that Windows 7 was running on just .33 percent of computers in their survey pool, with 15.14 percent running Vista, 81.57 percent running XP and 2.96 percent running Windows 2000.

Running XP SP2 is likely to become more and more dangerous for enterprises. Microsoft will not issue any more patches, meaning that when vulnerabilities are found, it will be up to those organizations to find a work-around or be vulnerable to hackers.

Microsoft released XP SP3 in May 2008. it was a massive 316MB package of software that included all of the fixes from the first two service packs plus additional ones. that service pack wasn’t necessarily easy to install and many organizations appeared to have skipped it, Brown said.

Brown predicted that the announcement of the end of support will prompt companies to move quickly. He said he expects companies will accept a higher level of risk for a couple of months but then migrate to Windows 7. Improving economic conditions and cheaper hardware may also spur companies to take the plunge into Windows 7, Brown said.

Microsoft released the first public beta of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on Tuesday. Many companies have tended to wait until the first service pack for a new operating is system released before adopting it. when the final version is out, Brown said Windows 7 migrations are likely to increase.

Ok, recently, a virus has somehow been installed into my computer. I have McAfee and I run a virus scan atleast twice a day now since new "cookie" files that are Potentially Unwanted keep showing up. they are all removed, but theres one file that says it cannot be completely removed. This file is called "WinFixer." it shows up on every scan, and will never be fully removed on every scan. so I need to know if anyone can help me get this pesky virus out of my computer. Also, all these Pop-Up ads keep coming up when I'm on the internet. and lastyl, I recently just downloaded Mozilla Firefox in an attempt to stop all these ads from coming up, but even when I'm on Firefox, ads come up, but with Internet Explorer as the browser. so, if anyone knows how to completely get rid of these ads, that would also help a ton. I was thinking maybe somehow disabling Internet Explorer, but I don't know how to do that, nor do I know if it will stop them.

One of the first things to do when you suspect malware is DISABLE system Restore.
If enabled, this allows malware to hide in the computer and re-install itself.
So, to disable it, RIGHT-click on "My Computer." Select "Properties" then under the 'system Restore' tab, check 'disable system restore' IF not already checked.
The next most helpful things that would help you are to use ONLINE scanners from websites to remove any malware on your PC.
The current best online scanners I prefer are from Kaspersky antivirus and Bitdefender antivirus. Together, these 2 scanners will find ALL the bad stuff on your PC because they have the BEST detection rate.
First, use Kaspersky's. (FYI: ALL these scans require you to agree to a EULA and install an activex control which is needed to perform the scan, so agree to them all.)

*NOTE: Some scanners ONLY work with IE or may not fully remove malware

*One other thing to consider is using another browser besides Internet Explorer. IE has a lot of security holes,
making it less safe than other browsers. I prefer Firefox from mozilla.org.
It's just as easy to use and has a lot of neat little add-ons you can toy around with. By itself, it is also safer from exploits than IE.*

As always, things will vary for you but I can assure you these things will help more than a lot.
Some things you can use together and others you can't. Some you will find harder to use or more 'pretty.'
Some may just not work for you and may be unfixable here on Yahoo Answers. I'm just here to help and hope the

Try downloading and installing Avast! 4 Home which is a free virus scanner and very good! Available from avast.com/. for the popups try downloading and installing the free Lavasoft Ad-aware 2007 program and run it weekly! Available from lavasoftusa.com/

Try running McAfee again in Safe Mode. it may be able to delete the file there.

Also, I suggest you download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D (they’re free), install them, update them and run them. if they don't seem to be able to get rid of everything they report finding, try running them again, this time in Safe Mode. Safe Mode prevents many instances of malware from loading and protecting itself against deletion of its files.

Also, turn off system Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode:

1. Log out and reboot your machine.
2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key
3. Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.
4. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. You may have to log in as Administrator to delete the bad files.
5. When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Update and run both regularly, along with a good anti-virus package.

WinFixer is a nasty little blighter. Time to call in the pros.

Visit a forum-style site such as AumHa Forums, Spyware Warrior, Castle Cops, etc. that specializes in helping people get adware and spyware off of their computers. Sites like these are FREE and volunteer-staffed, so it may take a little time before someone gets to your question, but these folks know what they're doing and they WILL be able to help.

Before you post – follow any "preliminary" cleaning instructions the site recommends.

When you post – described everything you've already tried to clean your computer.

When you have a helper working with you – follow their instructions to the letter.

All of that will help them to help you as quickly as possible.

Also, you don't need to confine yourself to the forums I mentioned. if you know of another place where you can get that kind of help, go ahead and drop them a line.
