I couldn't find the old book thread, so here's a new one. This doesn't have to just be books - news articles, fan-zines, comics, backs of shampoo bottles. etc.
History of NYC 60-70s

anyone suggest a good book on this period?

Polaris - Hey Sandy
(TV show intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY_3uxzkoV4)
(Full song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJrCkB9zzEo)

There is a verse in there in which the lyrics were intentionally omitted. Unfortunately the lyrics are indecipherable when heard. This was the same song used as the opening intro to "Pete and Pete", a television show in the early 90s. Recently updated on the Wikipedia page, the DVD set for the show interpreted the line as "Can you settle to shoot me?" This turns out to just be one interpretation by the contractor put in charge of subtitling the show. Being that the song most likely is talking about the May 4 Massacre at Kent State University, that potentially makes sense. There is also debate about the missing line (0:11 on the TV show intro) being a drug reference, and because "Pete and Pete" is a family show, they wouldn't have had that lyric posted.

And since this was the first time in about five years since I've researched this song again, I notice everything on the internet is saying the line is "can you settle to shoot me?" For the record this is a new development - and I doubt that's the actual line. I'm quite sure it's "can you pass me a shroom, babe?"

And for the record, there is only a small reason why I care about this song and the band at all - Mark Mulcahy is a local artist in my home town, so I grew up hearing his stuff a lot. In my opinion, his best album is In Pursuit of Your Happiness. It may not be your cup of tea, but it may be worth your time. <img src="http://www.aethereverywhere.com/discuss/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" /> Unbeknownst to me, Thom Yorke also contributed to a Marc Mulcahy tribute album. I'm gonna' go snag that album right now. markmulcahy.com

Movies, TV shows, flipbooks, etc.

JB and I watched a sweet documentary last night by Les Blank about New Orleans c. 1978 called "Always For Pleasure". It had appearances by Allen Toussaint, Professor Longhair, the Wild Tchoupitoulas, the Neville Brothers, etc. There was a jazz funeral, a St. Patrick's Day celebration and a Mardi Gras, all unspoiled by the homogenized, commercial mess they've become now. Really incredible; makes me wish I could go back in time to experience it.
