NIV Zondervan Study Bible

Zondervan Bible Publishers have released a new study Bible, called the NIV Zondervan Study Bible. Edited by Dr. D.A. Carson and carrying the tag line Built on the Truth of Scripture and Centred on the Gospel message, it is an ambitious project.

Along with Carson, there is a stellar line-up on the editorial committee: Dr. T. Desmond Alexander, Dr. Richard S. Hess, Dr. Douglas J. Moo, and
Dr. Andrew David Naselli.

Much anticipated, when we finally received our stock and saw the finished copy, we were wowed at the size of the undertaking. It is an impressive book. Even the personal size feels like an imposing volume.

As to the Bible itself, with over 60 contributors, there is a massive amount of information. There are over 30 articles on key topics, introductions to the various literary genres and nearly 20,000 on-page study notes. Full-colour maps, charts, photos and diagrams are interspersed throughout the Bible. The fresh, colourful page design will make the Bible more accessible to the modern reader while the single-column layout keeps the focus on the Bible text.

Born to be King

Many years ago, Princess Elizabeth, later to become Queen Elizabeth II, was on an overseas trip. They came to a mountain and the princess, with a few others, climbed the mountain, leaving the rest of the party at the foot. While they were gone, word came to the camp that her father, the King, had died. From then on, people said of her, "she went up the mountain a princess and came down a queen."

Yesterday, the Belfast Telegraph carried the headline "A King is Born." However, Elizabeth was born a princess, one day to become queen. The new royal baby was "born to be king", but not "born a king."

Only one person in history was born a king, born with the right to rule. That person stands as a unique figure in the history of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ, the son of God.

It was said of Him, "Where is He that is born king of the Jews."

The One who was born King, chose for Himself a cross, so that we could become part of His "royal" family. Now the cross is empty, the tomb is empty, He is on the throne waiting the day when He will come back to rule and be known as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

We would like to wish all our customers every blessing for Christmas and the coming year, and to thank everyone very much for your support through another year. It's been a pleasure and a joy to serve you as best we can. We have sent Bibles all over the world and only eternity will reveal the results.

In Matthew 1:23 we read,
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
God with us ... what a message. When you look at a picture of a manger this Christmas, on a card or a Chrismas ornament, remember that heaven is interested in you. God in heaven loves us individually and His love is a love of action; He sent His son into the world to show that He loves us and is interested in us.
When you go to a furniture shop to buy a bed you can choose ... single, double, queen, or even king size - a be fit for a King. When the One Who had a right to claim the rule of the universe came into the world He chose for His bed a manger.

He came down to earth from heaven,
Who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,
And His cradle was a stall:
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

If choosing a manger when He came into the world was remarkable, how much beyond our understing is that Christ would choose to die on a cross. In verse 21 we read, And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
This was the puropse of Christ's coming into the world, to go to the cross, to suffer for our sins and shed His precious blood so we can be saved, redeemed and brought back to God. If the manger shows the fact of God's love for us and interest in us, Calvary show's the extent of it:.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Don't forget, among all the shopping, presents, turkey and excited children, above and beyond it all, the God of Eternity, the God of heaven is interested in you and has reached out to you in the person of His Son and wants to save you, to forgive you and to give you everything. But when God gives, He give through Christ. Christ is the key to it all. Do you know Him as your saviour?

He was the author of numerous pamphlets, but was most famous for a series of addresses on "the offerings," given at Park Street, London. He took part in the funeral service of J.N. Darby.
