Why Oh Why

Why would I undertake such a weird task of list compiling, especially in regards to a movie made almost 25 years ago? Well in honor of the new Star Trek Movie (2009), there are lots of discussions about Star Trek around the interwebs. One such place is the Tivo Community Forum Happy Hour - General Chit-Chat. While browsing there recently I came across several people who made the bold claim that Star Trek III was one of the best movies of all time. In honor of full disclosure I will say right off the bat that I am a not a fan of Star Trek, in any existing shape or form past or present. So I really thought what these people were saying was far off-base. That being said I felt I was a bit biased. Sure I do not like Star Trek, but I have actually debated seeing the new film as JJ. Abrahms came into it not a fan either, so I thought it might just be worthwhile.

Why 501 Movies?

To be honest, 501 sounded like a good number. It is pretty significant, and I figured if I could come up with 501 movies I thought better than Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, there would be little chance I would have to accept anyone’s argument that it is one of the best movies of all time. Certainly movie tastes are highly subjective. Heck I am sure there are many movies on my list people will laugh at or outright dismiss. However, I bet most people will be able to find at least 25-50 movies that they realize are better than Star Trek III, which means it can’t possibly be one of the best movies of all time. As my list is not complete and I left a lot of movies off that others would certainly put on there as well.

What Criteria Was Used?

I really did try to be intellectually honest. I compared each movie I considered and only if I felt it was clearly better, in my opinion, did it get added to the list. A lot of movies I considered did not get added. I probably considered close to 2000 movies to come up with this list. Some of the movies not on the list I never saw, and others I thought were outright worse, or close enough to be debatable, and I did not want even debatable movies on the list. Every single movie on the list I have seen at least one time. It did cross my mind to “cheat” and throw in some movies I understood were good but I had not actually seen. I refrained from doing that, and never needed to resort to that.

Was It Difficult?

My position that Star Trek III has no business being considered a top movie of all time was buoyed early on. Without consulting any sort of reference at all I was able to come up with 160 or so movies off the top of my head. After that I used some good standbys like Netflix, Rotten Tomatoes, Yahoo! Movies, and IMDB. I took a bunch of paths, but it really was not hard to get to 450 or so. The last 50 though, things started to become difficult, so while early on I felt I might be able to do 1000, by the end I decided 501 was the perfect number.

Without Further Adieu

I did a cursory check for duplicates, but there may be some more. I thought of some additional movies that are not on the list after the fact. If a movie is not on the list it does not mean I think it is worse than Star Trek: The Search for Spock, it may mean I did not see it. Also correct titles and spellings may not be 100% accurate. More than half the entries were from off my head. These movies are not ranked in any sort of order, including how they came to me. So place no judgment on their relative positions in the list, but that is enough of me, here is the list.

Having just recently dived into the world of twitter, I see a lot of potential. However, I see some of you “marketers” going to extremes to apparently annoy people to the point that the only one’s who can possibly follow you are people who no longer look at their twitter account in any way shape or form.

I am talking to you guy who sends out little “tips” every 3-5 minutes, seemingly, 24 hours a day. Some of the tips are even potentially interesting, but it overloads my twitter screen and you simply have to be removed. So I lose out on the few good things you might have to offer because you have not learned to cull the wheat from the chaff. It would be one thing if it were people talking about themselves, but these are cases where someone has clearly automated and pre-loaded these “tips” and they have a program auto-posting them.

Again not wholly against the idea, but you need to cut it down to a handful of times a day. Only post the best ones and spread them out. 10-20 tweets an hour from someone who is not even doing anything but pre-loading some software with generic advice is essentially just spam. We have enough spam in this world. No need to drown twitter in it as well.

To make your tweets effective and useful and something people will stay subscribed to and pay attention to, you need to go for quality over content. Especially with auto-posted content. Perhaps you want to time it so you post one so people hear from you at the start of the day, maybe one mid-day and then one in early evening. Even throw one in for the night owls if you want. 3-5 times a day is plenty, every 3-5 minutes is way too much.

I will freely admit that I abandoned the Dallas Mavericks this season. The past four or five years I managed to see every minute of every regular season and playoff game without fail. I was happy when Avery Johnson was booted. However, I really thought this team was over the hill and done for and could not bring myself to get invested. So even when they were making their run down the stretch I decided I would not get caught up in it and I would wait for the playoffs.

I even decided I would watch their playoff games even if it meant a first round sweep at the hands of the LA Lakers. Instead I am looking up at a dream come true, playng the San Antonio Spurs, minus Manu Ginobelli. There will be no sweep here folks. These are the two teams with the longest consecutive 50 win season streaks in the NBA. The are both old but still have a little bit left to give. I will more than happily enjoy one more showdown between these two, even if it is not for all the marbles.

Something I had been missing since I moved from the world of PCs and over to my Macbook Pro was a tool to pick colors. I use it all the time when working with websites, designing graphics etc. Mind you I am not good at either of those things, but sometimes I am forced to put myself into service.

Obiously the eye-dropper tool does this in Photoshop, but it does not work outside of Photoshop. When I was in Windows I had a tool that did this same thing in the text editor I used for writing code. The name of it escapes me now. I am using TextWrangler on the Mac, which works great for me, but it does not have a color picker.

I finally got frustrated not having this available (in this case I was actually trying to match up an adsense ad block to a background), that I did some more searching to see if I could find a simple tool to throw on my mac. Instead I found out that there is a tool that comes with the mac called “DigitalColor Meter”. It is in Applications >>> Utilities >>> DigitalColor Meter. And it does exactly what you might think it does. You run it and anywhere your mouse goes it will break down the color code. Do you want it in Hex? It will do it. Want it in 16-bit hex? Will do that too. Pretty much any way you might need the color number it gives you quickly. I was so excited to find this application that I have permentantly docked it. I may not use it more than once a week but I don’t want to forget about it.

So thanks Apple. It is some of these little things that really make me appreciate my purchase, even a year later.

Jeremy “ShoeMoney” Schoemaker introduced his suite of online affiliate marketing tools to the world on April 15th, 2009. The catch was that it was only available to the first “500″ people to sign up for the very special price of $3.95 for the first month. The regular monthly price is set at $99.95.

So what is Shoemoney Tools? Before I get to that I just want to say this will not be a thorough review at this time. I have just gotten access and have not had time to get in depth with it, but will update with future entries as I get more involved with the product. I am always a little bit skeptical of some of the tactics the affiliate marketing salesmen use when trying to suck us affiliate marketers in, but I know Jeremy has been a succesful affiliate marketer, and has at least some respect for us. I do have a few concerns with his program right off the bat. Firstly, I want to be assured that our data is secure and is not going to be shared, distributed or viewed by anyone else. As any good affiliate marketer, we are paranoid about our campaigns, keyword lists and the rest. Right or wrong, I want to know that everything is being done to protect our data and keep it from prying eyes. Secondly, I am curious as to what else he has in store. $99.95 a month is not chicken feed, and while the initial tools are nice, most of them are honestly tools that could be put into an offline package and pay for one time. For this package to earn its value month-to-month, I want to know what we can expect down the road.

So what is there so far? First of all there are three main categories and then a fourth section for forums. The three categories are SEO, PPC and Guides. So full they seem very fleshed out and contain a lot of good tools and information for both novice and experienced affiliate marketers.

My next installment will go over the SEO tools. There is a nice list of them and very useful if you go the more traditional Search Engine Optimization route with your websites. Upon first glance there seems to be a lot of value and a lot of useful tools available with the ShoeMoney Tools Suite, so until then, you can check out ShoeMoney Tools yourself.

Are we destined to be chasing after the next big thing in Affiliate Marketing? When I first got started ringtones were the king of the hill for the segments I was in. I was told, though, that ringtones were dead and saturated and nobody new could make them work. Through pure dumb luck it seems, I went on to make massive amounts of money for two plus years after ringtones were dead.

Now in the past year I have been dealing with a odd and prolonged illness. During this time my affiliate marketing efforts were minimal. A few things I did find out quickly, one, ringtones really are dead now, and the next big thing already, seemingly came and went. I am talking about Acai Berry diet programs and everything associated with them.

Since I have been coming back I had a choice to make. Chase the next “big thing” with everyone else, or try to find other areas to make money. Some that I have used before and some new ones. I decided to avoid the Acai Berry and Colon Cleansing bandwagon. It is funny though, when I asked all my affiliate managers for their best offers every single one of them gave me an Acai Berry offer.

How has it worked for me? Well I thought I knew a lot about affiliate marketing, but I have learned more in the last month than I did in the past two and a half years. The good news is that I have maanged to make some very low sale items profitable and learned a lot of new tricks that I can successfully apply to campaigns for almost any product. This literally means the world is my oyster. One of my biggest issues previously was diversification. I preached it to myself and those around me daily, but I still had a huge part of my revenue tied into ringtones. I will not make that same mistake again. I know there were small blips like the Blockbuster era and such, but overall most of my eggs came from the same basket. (Easter shout out, it is tomorrow.)

So as I embrace twitter, mentioned here and as I vow to make more regular and useful updates, I will say I am not chasing after the next “big thing.” I am chasing after the 25 old little things and the 10 little just happened things, and 10 more soon to be going on things. The future is as bright as ever, but you got to pick your spots if you want to stay around.

A lot has happened and a lot more is to come, but I have been playing around with Twitter on my iPhone. I realized today when I was in a movie where I could tweet about it along with sending a picture, that it was just a little bit cool.

Lucky for me I got the Twitter address I wanted so check out my twitter and follow me at:

Twitter.com/Aeiouy

Post your twitter address as a reply, and I will make sure to follow you.

For the first time in the past 15 months, I took some substantial time away from the affiliate marketing workspace. Things had been changing, and I was not getting a clear picture of where I might be going moving forward. Most of November involved me doing almost no work in regards to Affiliate Marketing. Now it is December though and I am back at it, refreshed, renewed and full of good ideas.

I have quite a bit of new information, tools and other stuff to share, and hopefully I will have a chance to get that out there as I move forward. All things considered, 2007 has been a monster year, and 2008 is shaping up to be in even better.
