It occurred to me that this could be the new motto for the Republican Party. An answer to suit all questions: “I don’t know nothin’ about it, but I’m again’ it.”

I am just a bit miffed by our fearless leader making political points by questioning his presumptive opponent’s word choice. His focus should have been on the destructive legislation that was termed as “marvelous” not the word itself.

I have often joked with my daughter that the government has been trying to kill off my generation since the day it was born. They sprayed our neighborhoods with DDT, injected our food and cosmetics with red dye #3, insulated our schools with asbestos, filled the TV and movie screens with shows and films that glorified war and then sent us to war…the list goes on.

Now, here come the Tea Partiers, henceforth to be known as TP’ers (double entendre very much intended), wanting to “reform” Medicare. Excuse me, but weren’t these the people against the Health Care Bill because it would “kill granny”?

I suppose the TP’ers could and probably will make the argument that they are just giving granny the right to kill herself. If she isn’t able to afford food, shelter and health care it is just a matter of her mismanagement. “Sure we understand that she isn’t quite as sharp as she use to be,” they will say. “She should have known that she wouldn’t be and taken precautions when she was younger. It is not our fault.”

The beauty of this plan is granny is dead either way. If she chooses food over medicine, she dies. If she chooses medicine over food, she dies. The TP’ers inner Scrooge says, “Let granny die and decrease the surplus population.” That solves the problem nicely.

What the TP’ers haven’t recognized is that granny’s solution will be to come and live with them to make ends meet. But with granny’s luck they will just step over her on the doorstep until she expires, then they will call trash collection to pick her up…oops, can’t do that, trash collection is a government service. Sorry guys, guess you will have to haul the corpse away yourselves.

It is delicious but hardly worth the effort unless you need a wow dish for guests or pot lucks. This recipe is a simplification of the original and designed to be a “Cook for One” recipe. How ever many lasagna noodles are in the box is the number of servings the recipe will make, usually between 14 to 16 servings.

Beefy Lemon-Spinach Rollups

1 pound ground beef (browned, drained and crumbled)
1 medium to large onion (about 2 cups diced)
10 ounce package frozen spinach (thawed and squeezed dry)
16 ounces of Ricotta or Cottage Cheese
1 teaspoon garlic powder or 4 cloves fresh
2 teaspoons black pepper
2 eggs
1 box lasagna noodles
2, 14 1/2 ounce cans beef broth
1/2 cup lemon juice
2 teaspoons cornstarch

Brown, drain and crumble the ground beef. Sauté the diced onion. Thaw and squeeze dry the spinach. Combine the beef, onions, spinach, cheese, garlic, pepper and eggs. Let the filling rest in refrigerator while preparing the noodles.

This is my perfected scrubby pattern. Extremely easy using only the (sc) single crochet stitch.

It is cotton on one side for the delicate items you wouldn’t want to scratch and braided nylon cord on the other for more scrubbing power. Braided cord can be found in any hardware store. It comes in a variety of colors and sizes. Just choose a size about the same diameter of the cotton yarn you are using. Although I haven’t tried it, I think hemp twine would make a good scrubbing side too and would make a totally natural fiber scrubby. I’m afraid my skin is a bit too sensitive to work with twine.

It is also designed to curve over on the top forming a ridge to help protect your fingertips.

As always, if you would like a printer friendly PDF clicking on the “Buy Now” button will take you to PayPal where you may purchase one for immediate download for $1.50.

Scrubby

The scrubby is worked in the round without joining. Use a piece of scrap yarn to mark the beginning single crochet of each round. (Weave the yarn in and out between the last stitch and first stitch of each round. Then remove it at the end. Note: Remember that the stitches, because they are worked in the round will not lie exactly on top of each other and the beginning stitch will spiral to the left on each round.)

Materials:
4 ply cotton yarn
Braided nylon cord
Crochet hook H or J
Tapestry Needle

Stitches used:
Single Crochet (sc)
Chain Stitch (ch)

Size: These instructions should produce a scrubby 3″ in diameter.

Bottom: Using braided nylon cord starting on round 2 work the single crochets in the back look of the previous rounds. This will make a ridge which will add to the surface scrubbing area.
