Documenta IIIII IIIII II (12)

It's been a while since I've posted something up here, but i've been working two jobs at a time during the vacation, I'm still working but i've got a little more time on my hands since I've it cut down to one job.

So.. I finally could start reading in some books i've bought, but didn't yet manage to even open them. One of these books is Documenta 12. it's in fact a catalogue of a exhibition in Kassel. I didn't knew nothing about the exhibition at that time (2009) but it's in fact an interesting overview of art history up until today. And(!) I already found out that documenta 13 will be in 2012 (at least if we survive 2012).

now to talk about some things I read and found intreaging.

I like the works of Persian calligrapher Haddschi Maqsud At-Tabrizi (1537)

Honestly I could care much about the history of that time, but i like the idea how his calligraphic works had an 'edge' to it.

With that i mean he placed them diagonal, in different sizes, an unorthodox connections between words ( not that I could read them) and puts them in sort of schemes with all different sizes.

I'm not the biggest fan of overloaded decorative items ( and mostly not the oriental kind), but I like this because I never really noticed calligraphy as an interesting form of text. Now I know there are ways to make it look interesting, and challenging for possible further experiment..

I'm still working on my own typeface, I added some free modifications to some of the letters, and creating deliberate alternations of the "Aldine" typeface.

I'm currently working on my own typeface, which will be a edited version of Adobe Caslon Pro but with more straightened edges and slightly some more breathing space as for the "holes" and gaps in the letters.

It only a first shot so..

These somewhat strange nudes, illustrate the modernistic idea of artist that wanted to introduce a new tradition in art's history

Every time i look back to paintings, or pictures from Dada I regret I wasn't there when it all happened and regret that it could only last such a short period of time. Swiss writer/painter/photographer Raoul Haussmann is probably the keyfigure in the dada story.
From the 1920's until The 1940's (main works) he makes pieces that translate his will to change the emotional state of mind to a mechanical state. But the real idea of dada was in fact an idea of dynamics, and wanting to keep changing things, just like they wanted to do with art, changing the idea of art by making art, without calling it art.

August Sander

August Sander was a German photographer born in 1876 and introduced to photography as an assistant photographer in a mining company, which later allowed him to buy his own equipement.
He is most known for his portraits he made during the Nazi regime starting around 1920's.
His series called: People of the 20th century can be seen as a documentary of all types of people during the Weimar Republic in Germany.
The series is divided into seven sections: The Farmer, The Skilled Tradesman, Woman, Classes and Professions, The Artists, The City, and The Last People (homeless persons, veterans, ...). By 1945, Sander's archive included over 40,000 images.

Arthur Harfaux is a surrealistic photographer/ illustrator in the post-WWI avant-garde movement.

Marcel Lefrancq

As a big fan of surrealistic art, within the range of film, poetry and paintings, I just discovered a Belgian master of surrealistic photography: Marcel Lefrancq.
During my visit at the museum of Photography in Charleroi, I discovered his work and was somewhat embarrased to admit that I've never heard of him before, since he's Belgian and born in Mons.

Willing to make up for this lack of knowledge of this artist I did some research and soon found out he was not only a self-educated photographer, a man with a big interest in archeology, and a strong opposer of German Fascists, but also one of the first leading figures of surrealism in Belgium.

He may not be as well known as René Magritte, but his photographs, and collages speak to me in pretty much the same way, although his photos have a slightly darker side to it then I'm used to with Magritte.

Nadav Kander

I was blogging around town, and I saw some pictures by Nadav Kander on the As heard from mars blog so decided to take a look on this guy's site. He makes amazing portraits and landscape pictures. I loved his portrait of Benicio del Toro, and the ones he did for Obama's people.

He also made a series called "signs that we exist": One of the pictures that intrigued me was one of a table that was painted like it was a painting by Jackson Pollock, that direct reference was given but it made me think as well, thanks to the composition and colouring, of some of Joan Miro's work, especially an untitled painting he made in 1933. Although it may look like a strange resemblance, it just popped up in my head.

Or maybe I just wanted to post a Joan Miro painting on the blog as well...

Last sunday I went to the Museum Le grand Hornu and found a book by experimental artist Edith Dekyndt which intrigued me.

She experiments with scientific methods and theories to express that science shouldn't always be about reaching objectif experiences, but it's just as well a way to open up our minds for further dreaming. These images often suggest a serene and disturbing atmosphere, both at the same time.
